What does love look like?

Well, there are as many answers to that question as there are blades of grass on a footy oval but let’s look at one answer that I found while watching Marco Polo a stunning Netflix series.

Our two lovers in this example are the characters Lotus ( Michele Yeoh ) and One Hundred eyes ( Tom Wu ) the scene I’d like to draw your attention to is a unique and poignant one.

One Hundred eyes who is blind but in the tradition of the Martial Arts genre shows few, if any signs of blindness, able to move about, fight with unmatchable prowess, and perceive that which the eyes almost always miss.

Through selfless and selfish acts on both their parts, these two lovers are separated, though the love between them only grows stronger.
Suddenly their obits realign and Lotus finds One Hundred Eyes, the lover she thought was lost to her, working out in his Dojo. Lotus watches from the shadows, being careful not to make a sound.
As she moves out from the shadows a single tear falls and One Hundred Eyes knows he is not alone.

Being a highly skilled martial artist herself Lotus cannot resist the opportunity to get closer to her long lost love, she stealthily moves closer & closer shadowing his every move and with every strike & block he employs she moves in until the breadth of a hair is all that separates them, their movements in perfect sync ….

It is that synchrony that One Hundred Eyes perceives, the balance that can be achieved with only one other person that he has ever known but she evades his touch stays just outside his reach…
Each attempted parry & thrust finds nothing but air but still, he knows she’s there!

And then she’s gone.

It’s mournful, torturous and at the same time glorious and exciting and heartbreaking.

This time we are living through as Americans has a lot in common with this scene and may teach us something about how we are, with... to... each other.

Will we forever be like these separated lovers?

Maybe not but we should at least try to acknowledge that we are in some sort of relationship, and that requires that we work on it and as of the time of this writing we have done precious little of that.

People that want love, a society that wants love behaves in a way that unashamedly walks toward that goal and sadly we have not ever behaved in that way, as a people, even though we have had many examples shown to us throughout our history.
We sometimes forget all the ways we have been shown to express that pure emotion we call love but we shouldn’t, it is that connection or should I say the lack of connection that is the thing that we have lost sight of …
As good a slogan as it is I don’t think what we need is “ to make America great again”
Am I saying something so incredibly trite as “all we need is love “?
Well, maybe it is what we need!

Siblings

Recent events have made me reflect on the nature of things...

At this moment I am thinking about Cool and Swagger!

With the passing of Lonnie Mack, Prince, David Bowie and George Martin you may believe that the world is now in deficit of both but fear not Cool and Swagger are safe and sound!
Now if you know me you know I'm one cool doofus (maybe more doofus) but cool doesn't happen in a vacuum it's gotta come from somewhere!

So let me tell you a bit about my personal idol of Cool and Swagger!

My brother John Bagley!
Back in the day that was one tall dark and handsome sharp dressing SOB!

While I was learning how to deal with the freak flag that was sticking out the middle of my forehead there was my brother making "cool" his bitch!
I was bound to lean something!
By example, I got the idea of what dress sense and Swagger is and how I could apply it to my slightly less formidable physicality.
Case and point: in the 80's a trend swept through NY a seemingly incongruous western look...

There were many offenses men and women with awful vests and jeans tucked into bad cowboy boots... god the horror!
In the midst of all that bad, I have the memory my bro... Boots. Jeans, 3/4 sheepskin coat and that western top hat Clint made famous what a look!

While I couldn't pull that off, the splendor of it made me focus on what I could pull off!
Thanks brother!

There must still be a great number of these type of old Deco picture houses around the planet it always baffles me that with all the style they possess I don't hear about any of them prospering.
Sure they still operate but it seems that they're always on the brink of closure.
Seems a shame ...

The Astor theatre is one in my neighborhood that fits the above description.
The Astor is a well respected fixture but I run into many that have never been in it.
We all ( citizens of Melbourne ) Drive , Walk & Tram past it daily but never go in.
I have a desire to see it work ... I want to take it apart like the tape recorders, tv's and microphones I opened as a child.
I do have a desire to make things work, could be why I have such a hard time letting go when they don't
I'll either have to find a way to let go easier
or...
Find a way to make EVERYTHING work!

I didn't deserve that" or
"What did I do to deserve this?"
But I think the real point lies in the idea that for some reason we tend to believe that the universe (for lack of a better term) has some interest in what happens to us.
I mean does the universe still sob over the fate of the dinosaurs?
Does it ponder still over the fates of the many we have all lost?
If I trip and fall in the path of an oncoming tram will the universe, god, buddha or the tooth fairy send a card to my mom to say " That was just fucked up what happened to your boy... we all regret it and hope you get over it soon."
I think not.
The fact is that in the grand scheme none of us matter much ... and that's ok.
Because we never did.
I wonder when mankind got the idea that we are the lynch pin of the universe?
Sure for a long time we believed we were the centre of it all but that was pure ignorance now that we know much better what do we do?
Will we finally kill off the gods that have shackled us since we invented them?
Maybe make some real progress?
It seems unlikely that we will
There will always be one group waiting for the return of this one or some event that will return us to our long lost & forgotten former glory.
In fact we have just lived through the latest rapture when the true believers were to be reunited with that long absent christian god... son of god?
Member of the holy trinity?
I can never be sure
but it came and past us by like a speeding car on a motorway.
I suppose the true believers were really disappointed
For my part I have always thought it a wild idea that the very entity that preaches non judgement , bloke peace would have the sack to condemn a very large segment of mankind to eternal servitude in the pits of hell.
I mean surely Jesus is one of the world's great pushovers ...
I mean a bit of " Jesus I have sinned", "I knew not what I did!"
"I'm on the path now!"
I mean if you believe it ( and I dare say you would if faced with the rapture) surely the big guy would let you in like a favorable door guy outside of 54.
"come on... get in before someone sees ya!" he'd say and you in the party, so whats to worry?
"And Jesus ?"
"Yes"
"Can I borrow the car ... & $20 ?"
"Sure" he'd say "now get in there you little scamp"

If you were a sinner
like myself
Even if I was sent down
just the fact that there was a satan and hell means that the opposite must be true so even while burning in hells everlasting fire I've gotta be happy for gods in his heaven with my family & friends and all is right in the world.
So take me away!
Its all good!

It is quite shocking to me that I have never heard of "The Negro travellers' Green Book Guide to travel & vacations" If you are as unaware as I was I'll let you know what it's all about ...
This, I can only imagine, indispensable book points a safe route to travel in segregated America, it lists hotels, gas stations tailors, restaurants that would serve blacks in those dark days of segregation, so that if you were fortunate enough to be able to travel it could give you at least some hope of surviving America as it was then.
This book must have been a must have for every band traveling Jim Crow America so every tour manager, bus driver, booking agent & more MUST have known about it and it was a published for 30 years ... let me say that again 30 YEARS! and yet it is not common knowledge how can this be ?
Now, hear me clearly I'm not saying that it should be known to simply point out another injustice inflicted upon blacks that is a valid point to be sure but let's take a look at the other points that might make this an incredibly interesting topic for radio, television, and print ( and not only during black history month)
1. somehow in 1936 Victor H. Green found a way to compile and get published the first edition!
2. This book WITHOUT DOUBT saved countless lives by pointing a safe route of travel
3. It was printed for THIRTY YEARS!
4. Victor Green used his contacts in the postal service to compile his list of safe havens for the African American Traveler.
5. It was printed for THIRTY YEARS!

Printed on its cover were the words: Carry your "Green Book" with you, You may need it.
It must have been widely known & widely used so ... what happened?
Why did the knowledge of this book and Victor H. Green fade away into the mists of time?
The answer may not be as obvious as you think... after all in this case the bulk of the information was and is being held in "the community", my own mother, who lived through those times and spent some part of her life in the south must have come across it not to mention uncles, aunts Grandparents, friends, relatives...
so ...
I ask again...
What happened?
Why are there so many blank spots in the history of Black Americans?
Once we didn't know there were cowboys, and what happened to the free blacks we see from time to time in photographs of the 1800's ?
There has never been any doubt that there are uncountable omissions in the telling of the story of America...
I am beginning to think that it just may be access and use of the internet that will bring many of these obscured stories to light... wouldn't that be something?
Tales of Abolitionists, Librarians, shopkeepers, Travelers, Settlers...
What would happen if we (and I mean the all inclusive "WE" of humankind) could uncover the lost stories and complete the history?
Lets hope we find out soon.

You know … it occurs to me , after all these years that there have been so many directional clues that I have not considered along the way to here .

Maybe I'm a little slow or maybe I just lost focus for a while... or maybe , and this is the part that scares me, maybe I have a fatal flaw when it comes to women, it's not that the women I have known were bad, far from it, I have been extremely lucky to have known every one of them, but I am sure now, that as much as I would have wished it were not so, in every case we were not suited to each other.

Is it the accumulating years that lead me to believe that the ones that I did not explore fully are the very ones I may have had the best chance with? Or is it just that crazy “road not taken” thing that does it?

I would have liked to grow with someone, but it seems that is not my fate.

I have wanted that thing , that ubiquitous “spark” I think in some cases I have tried to build the spark but that can't work. Other times I have hoped that the spark would come, or that it wasn't really necessary but the truth is I have always wanted Nora Charles... you know Nick's wife... from “The Thin Man” books.... Ballsy, interrogative, gutsy, faithful. Don't get me wrong every woman I've known has had these traits even if they didn't know it, I guess it was more about the other things we both brought along.

Still.... more than anything else I have wanted a partner, a partner in truth to share it all with without fear or shame. You see …

My problem is I have seen it …

I have seen quite a few couples that have achieved that balance, kind in nature and spirit, accepting, loving.... not perfect, Hell no, not that … but considerate and considered.

As much as I love and admire these lucky couples... my envy is almost too distracting.

Yes of course I want what they have... I'd love to find my match but maybe that is not for all of us, or maybe it's just for the ones that can read the clues.

Recently while watching one of the news programs from the homeland and during one of the segments on politics I began to think, as the camera panned across a room of full figured politicians... Would America ever elect an obese president? ... Again.
You may be thinking that president W.H Taft was quite a large politico but that was a long time ago and on an almost entirely different planet.
The reality these days is for even a slightly overweight person to even run for the office is unthinkable.
There was a large form politician here in Australia that thought himself "fit" for the job of Prime Minister but for some reason he just couldn't quite get there ... eventually off he went to the political fat farm ( yeah I know there is probably not really a political fat farm but I like to think there is ) so he returns to the world of politics still a bit over the weight limit ... so no brass ring.
Listen, for my money I say there has never been a qualified politician, they operate in a world outside the one we all live in ... and by the way, that is the major problem with modern politics.
I think that considering the way we are all obsessed with Abs, pecs, and the appearance of fitness the chance that any person that can't fit into the mold of this years fitness, can never rise to lead.
This may mean that because of our "form over substance" issues we may be heading down the road to times of younger & younger "leaders" I wonder how that'll work out.

Just recently, I read a tweet with a link to a list of the top political leaders and it got me thinking ... how did we get here?
To my mind it is quite backwards to think of politicians as leaders, really at this point in history I hardly think this need be stated.
It is not their job to lead, to set moral guidelines, or to set the course of the nation... it is their job to listen! to listen to us, the people, it is our job to be involved & to watch carefully what they do.
This next bit sounds like a bad thing but really it's not so read carefully... We are not supposed to trust politicians! not because they are bad people but simply because they are...PEOPLE. I am not saying that you can't trust people, of course you can but you need to have a realistic assessment of their nature ( by the way... this is almost impossible the way we live today but maybe we'll get to that later) this is the reason why the story of the scorpion & the frog rings so true.
We cannot expect politicians to do the right thing of their own accord ( or anyone else for that matter) that is why there are checks an balances and there always have been, even before the constitution was written... for true.

Here is why I make the comparison that is the title of this post...

If your car breaks down and you can't fix it, its clear you know nothing about how it works, your mechanic knows this and may find it hard not to take some advantage... It's been known to happen.

Now...

If your car breaks down and you can't fix it and you have to take it to a mechanic, you would be in a much better position if you know a bit about how the car works, now... if your mechanic is an honest, nice guy, as many are, not only does that knowledge likely indemnified against being ripped off but the brief conversation you will have, may just make a friend or at least an ally.
What I'm trying to say here is if you don't have the information, you can be sold any bill of goods by a mechanic or even a politician and in the case of the politician the lack of knowledge & involvement is exactly what makes them think that they have the right to lead and the right to make decisions in our "absence" and have no doubt we have been absent for a long while.

From the epiglottis

Sometimes you hear about a movie and you want to like it for any of a number of good reasons, in my case I have never really got taken over by Bollywood films seen a few but to date ... My name is Khan had me even with the quite daggy line ... " My name is Khan ... and I am not a terrorist!" which is repeated over & over.
Don't get me wrong the film has a fantastic premise Indian man grows up close to his mother which makes his sibling jealous, mother dies, both sons end up in America ... then 9/11... lots of tension to work with there, he eventually goes on a pilgrimage to meet the president to say... " My name is Khan ... and I am not a terrorist!" even the fact that he suffers from Asperger's Syndrome could work and I can certainly see where it would make the character more acceptable to American audiences but it led to some very bizarre situations at some points, like Khan's visit to Willamina Georgia where he meets "mama" Jenny & Funny hair Joel two full blown black, southern cliches' and they all eventually suffer through an unnamed hurricane in what seems an abandoned baptist church while the congregation sings "we shall overcome". Whoo Boy! At points as strange as it sounds it reminded me a lot of Forrest Gump, Khan does repeat his mothers words of wisdom... "There are two types of people in the world, good ones & bad one's"
Listen you should definitely see it despite the flaws it's not a bad film, could've been great, but not bad.
In over 2 hours it did'nt really cover any of the many very powerful ideas but hey if you are one of the unfortunates that sat through say... hmm, Twin Peaks you could watch this easily.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://monkstream.blogspot.com/2010/12/film-my-name-is-khan-from-epiglottis.html' title='Film: My Name is Khan... I think that hearing the views of people be they famous or anonymous is interesting.
I listen to some casts on Photoshop, technology, Tai Chi & Dr Karl's triple J science podcast, Recently I added a new one to my list "The field Negro's guide to arts & culture" besides having a great title it has a couple of things going for it, namely the hosts, Comedian W. Kamau Bell & Guitarist Vernon Reid from what I've heard so far two literate, funny, knowledgeable & well spoken hosts.
Right off the mark the hosts made a disclaimer about this podcast not being about race, and from the first two episodes I can say that is true, but the fact that the statement had to be made in the first place... well that says something doesn't it?

Now as you probably know I am quite fond of long rambling dialogues, lengthy monologues (mostly My own) & stream of conscientiousness patter so really the podcast format is really made for me.
The next episode I have T'd up has an interview with Ernie Isley I'd give it a listen if I was you.

People that get a "pass" : Come on! The idea is that whoever we pick the poor bastard should be working for us.
In the interest of full disclosure you should know I do not write from within the borders of America but know also it is not lack of love that drove me from America's bosom it was more the desire to see the world.
It is a sad and ultimately disappointing fact that there has hardly been a minute of my life that I have not longed for the promise that is America, not the promise of two chickens in every pot & a car in every garage or the American dream of house holding or the like, no... the promise I'm thinking of is the promise of a union... that we, a group of people as different as flakes of snow, and despite the differences still choose to live together to promote the common good.
I guess the problem is ... just what is the common good?
I have seen, in my travels, much commonality in the people I have met the needs in desires of one group are not so different from those of another, I have seen the artificial nature of the walls we have built between us and countless others before me have remarked on the same and somehow we all still seem to cherish our walls.
Imagine what we could get done if we had clear skies?
We might even make up for thousands of years of underachieving!

Groups

Listen... It is sad to say but No matter how hard we try... none of us can avoid being put into some group.
Black, White, Asian, Jew.
Man, Woman.
Straight, Gay.
Those are just the easy ones... it seems the longer I live, the more subsets I hear of and/or are added to, I guess that just comes with the gift of life.
I have never really understood why the desire to break life down to subjective groupings is so attractive.
I have to accept it ... I guess... but i can't shake the feeling that we'd be much better off if we could take the judgment out of our little groupings.
There has... as long as I can remember, been one particular bit of nonsense that gets my blood boiling and sad to say that I have heard this same nonsense come from the mouths of just about every kind of person.
I'm sure you know it... it goes like this... " I have no problem with _ _ _ _ _ _ " or " _ _ _ _ control everything"
or " _ _ _ _ _ _ just need to get over it" or " _ _ _ _ _ commit all the crime" I have unfortunately been subjected to the "logic" that is always put forth to justify these ridiculous statements. The "Statistics", observations & half truths that never stand when challenged... the problem is they are almost never challenged!
I am still astounded when a acquaintance starts in with " Oh ... you know that _ _ _ _ _ own the whole neighborhood!" Or " it's never been the same since _ _ _ _ came into the block" and somehow they expect me to nod in agreement, it is even more astounding when considering the "group" I am placed in on first sight... I mean... I would have to be some kind of very special idiot to believe that the untruths that have plagued me throughout my life, the ones that have been widely accepted as truth, the ones that have made my existence at times a true horror would be true of another... without question!
It has always left me baffled when a person that I had always thought was reasonable ... somehow gets it in his/her mind that I could somehow be a receptive audience to their statements of " no ... really they're just genetically different!"
I guess that all I am trying to say in this run on sentence is ... I guess I am lucky indeed to have met enough people to say with full confidence that most of what is said about any group is ... Bullshit!
That being said ... Again... a valid concern but the real thing that gets me is a strange phenomenon that occurs anytime a "black story " happens.
Anytime Oprah, Michael Jackson or any other black personality find their way into the daily news report ( News... that is funny) a fantastical thing happens, Black reporters that have not been seen since that last "Black Story" suddenly appear on on our screens but hey let's not make this a black thing... same thing happens with Koreans , Latino, Chinese , Japanese ... it's like there is some strange journalistic Green Room where "ethnic" reporters wait for airtime.
It's not like this is a new thing there used to be a guy on eyewitness news in New York and he got pulled out of the Green Room for all the "urban" stories nowadays it's a bit different now it's like some mysterious PC council comes together to judge a story too sensitive for just any reporter... Roe v. Wade bring out the woman, J-lo story bring out the Latino, whaling story ... bring out the whale reporter.
My question? ... is Oprah quitting her show really a "Black" story?
I mean I could see it as an entertainment story, or financial... hell, it even works as corporate news.
Does it become a "black" story simply because Oprah is black?
(and the same goes for Woman, Latino, Whale and all the rest)
And just who sits on that PC council ?

CLUES

You know … it occurs to me , after all these years that there have been so many directional clues that I have not considered along the way to here .

Maybe I'm a little slow or mybe I just lost focus for a while... or maybe , and this is the part that scares me, maybe I have a fatal flaw when it comes to women, it's not that the women I have known were bad, far from it, I have been extremely lucky to have known every one of them, but I am sure now, that as much as I would have wished it were not so, in every case we were not suited to each other.

Is it the accumulating years that lead me to believe that the ones that I did not explore fully are the very ones I may have had the best chance with? Or is it just that crazy “road not taken” thing that does it?

I would have liked to grow with someone, but it seems that is not my fate.

I have wanted that thing , that ubiquidious “spark” I think in some cases I have tried to build the spark bu that can't work. Other times I have hoped that the spark would come, or that it wasn't really nescicary but the truth is I have always wanted N ora Charles... you know Nick's wife... from “The Thin Man” books.... Ballsy, interogative, gutsy, faithful. Don't get me wrong every woman I've known has had these traits even if they didn't know it, I guess it was more about the other things we both brought along.

Still.... more than anything else I have wanted a partner, a partner in truth to share it all with without fear or shame. You see … My problem is I have seen it … I have seen quite a few couples that have achieved that balance, kind in nature and spirit, accepting, loving.... not perfect, Hell no, not that … but considerate and considered.

As much as I love and admire these lucky couples... my envy is almost too distracting.

Yes of course I want what they have... I'd love to find my match but maybe that is not for all of us, or maybe it's just for the ones that can read the clues.

More in justice

Protest Rally - Against Iranian Election, Melbourne
Ok It seems that it will never end ... Maybe way back then somehow a molecule of "pure evil" was burred deep in the middle of what world become our earth and it's been screwing with us ever since!

I like that explanation better than the one that goes, we're Just stupid, evil and doomed to repeat every ridiculous error over and over until we blow ourselves up... or destroy our environment or create some other catastrophe that brings about our own end.

So ... Let me take you back to the early days of mankind ... back to a time when humans were just starting to build some sort of cohesive society ... there were the hard workers , the followers, the slackers, the damaged. & the different. All equal and all doing their part to make what they had better ... at night when the work was done and the settlement slowed to it's after hours pace

the slackers said to the Hardworkers "Slow down man you're gonna burn yourself out"

The followers said "yes that's right"

The Damaged said " We're all doomed!"

To which the followers said "yes... that's right!"

The Different said "we weed to take a fresh look at what we all need!"

To which the followers replied yes, that's right !

To which the hard workers said "What you all need to do is to pull your fingers out and get to work!"

To which the followers said "YES...That's right!"

And we have been running around in that same cycle ever since, and our little cycle has gone an to cause untold hardships all round.

(the point to me is that they're all right)

Now ... Consider this...

No matter what you believe... we can all pretty much agree that at some point there were a very small number of humans ... Yes?

and we and everybody else are descendents of those few humans. . . yes?

So for all these millennia we have of course been wiping ourselves out... wars, racism, crime, genocide... all the countless little terrors we inflict upon each other to bring us to our current position known as "the Brink", "up the creek" or my personal fave ... "All f**ked up!"

Does that sound bright to you?

So our little cycle has served us badly by making profit from misery acceptable, placing arbitrary borders between humans, and leaving us separated, unfocused & unable to effect any substantive change for the better for human kind.

Does anyone recall?... isn't that what we're supposed to be doing here?

TBC-

Too Long

A few months ago , I took a run down to Port Campbell to see the 12Apostles in Victoria , Australia but due to an accident on the road the route was closed so I had to turn around and head back to Melbourne 8 + hours round trip ... with no pay off... I really do use it, and like it

there's so many ways to access all this information I Really do wish that there could be one page that could take me every where I wanna be... how hard Could that be.

I got a new lappy and it has vista and I can see how all this can be useful I mean I'm writing this post with a writing pad with a handwriting recognition that works quite well it I has changed the way I do most everything from photography to web surfing. so now I am looking forward to living in a world where information is at my fingertips.
