Spanish Fall / Winter Blog Hop Tips for those Winter Months of Teaching, La Profesora Frida

How do we keep our teaching exciting and interesting allll year long? Especially in the winter months when the doldrums start to hit? I have a few ideas and I hope you enjoy them!

1. Switch things up!
          Do you normally give a pop quiz on Fridays? Give that pop quiz on Monday instead and watch your students' eyes bug out!

     Do you normally give a test at the end of a chapter / unit? Try a different form of assessment like Project Based Learning, a Skit or a Fashion Show! Your students will enjoy the change and you will enjoy watching them use what they've been learning!

    Do you speak any other languages? This might seem silly at first, but hear me out. Take 1 day out of your regularly scheduled lessons and teach a totally different language (that is, if you know one!). I love taking a day to teach American Sign Language, my 2nd language. On the first day of school I always tell my students that I'm not just going to teach them Spanish, I'm going to teach them HOW to learn another language. And then I put those words in action and teach them ASL for a day later in the year.

    Teach your students Salsa / Tango / ChaChaCha, etc! I love to take a day in the fall and reserve either the gym or the auditorium (the stage makes for a great dance floor with plenty of space). Or have a dance party right in your classroom with some YouTube videos of pop songs in Spanish. Even if it's just for 10 minutes, it will feel great to have a change of pace for a few minutes!

2. Change of scenery!

Is it time to rearrange the desks in your classroom? You bet it is!

Is it time to take down your bulletin boards and put up something totally fresh and new? Darn right!

3. Take care of YOURSELF.

     Avoid burnout during the school year by taking care of yourself. As teachers we are givers. We give and give and give and often have nothing left over for ourselves.

Let me remind you the reason why the flight attendant says to put the oxygen mask on yourself before helping someone else--- because if you pass out from lack of oxygen, you can't help anyone else. YOU need to take care of yourself so you can continue to help others.

Here are a few ideas:

     Nurture your hobbies.
         Paint, Read, Ski, Bake.... Do what you love! You can't be in teacher mode 100% of the time!

         I love to upcycle paint chips & wallpaper samples...................>

And I also love to paint.................

      Try something new that you've always wanted to do!  Take a Community Ed class on cake decorating, auto repair or Yoga!

4. Stay organized!

     Being organized makes everything run more smoothly and saves you a ton of time!

Stress Free Manicures for Teachers, Jamberry Back To School GIVEAWAY

Making my life as stress free as possible is the name of the game!
And that includes exploring all of the ways I can make my life easier and spend more time doing the things I love.

So let's talk about manicures! I want to look professional while I'm teaching; having a nice manicure is one way to maintain a look of professionalism.

So, how to maintain nice looking nails while teaching?
Here are a few options:

1. Nail polish
I love nail polish and have a LOT of it. Nail polish can be an inexpensive way to have nice looking nails.
2. Professional manicure / Gel nails / Acrylic Nails
These are all gorgeous options, but spendy. On a teacher's budget, I just can't see myself shelling out the kind of money necessary for the initial set of nails plus the upkeep. I have done acrylics for special occasions (my wedding, for example), but haven't ever felt like I should spend the extra $$ on a regular basis.
3. Do nothing
Well, not nothing nothing, but not everyone wants/needs something fancy to feel professional. Keep your nails clean & trimmed and for a little added something put a coat of clear polish on for shine.
4. Jamberry nail wraps
One way to have professional looking fingernails on a budget is to try some Jamberry nail wraps!

Luckily I have a girlfriend who I worked with at Spanish Camp who is also a Jamberry consultant and she sent me a free sample.

I did the Jamberry "test" which is to apply a Jamberry nail wrap to one accent nail and paint the rest of my nails with polish to see which of the two holds up better. Jamberry won, hands down. My nail polish was chipping by day 2 and my wraps lasted almost 2 weeks. (My biggest problem was that I was excited to try a different nail wrap color scheme, but my nails still looked awesome, so I had to wait! lol)

Jams vs. Nail Polish, Day 2: You can see that the nail polish on my first finger is nearly gone already! I was digging in the garden and it rubbed off. I did a nail polish touch up, but the next day I was back digging in the garden, which ruined the nail polish again, but not the Jamberry nail wraps. So instead of touching up my nail polish for a 3rd time, I just put Jams on all of my fingernails. Problem solved!

There are a lot of fun Jamberry nail wraps, and you can even color coordinate with your school colors or support a club or sport:

Color by Number is something my students enjoy, so I decided to create a similar activity to help them practice recognizing verb conjugations with this fun Color by Conjugation activity.

This particular Color by Conjugation packet has 3 coloring sheets, each practicing a different present tense theme:

- Present Tense, -AR, -ER, -IR, Regular Verbs
- Present Tense, SER
- Present Tense, -AR, -ER, -IR, Stem Change E-IE

Take What You Need Posters, Toma Lo Que Necesitas, Spanish lesson

"Take What You Need" posters have become a phenomenon of happiness and goodwill and an expression of personal artistic nature. Please visit my Pinterest board titled “Take What You Need Posters” to see more lovely examples and links to articles about this illustration of human kindness.

“Take what you need” posters are set up like “for sale” flyers that you might see tacked to a bulletin board at a grocery store or on a college campus. Instead of contact information on the tabs across the bottom, there are pieces of hope to help bring a smile to someone’s face.

Back to School time is the perfect time for your students to support one another and creating a "Take What You Need" poster and hanging them up around the school is one small way they could do that.

And of course, because I'm a Spanish teacher, I immediately saw the potential to use this as a Spanish class lesson. Here is my Spanish version of this poster:

Mine says "Toma lo que necesitas," and the tags say "amor, felicidad, sonrisas, paciencia, paz, motivacion, esperanza" and "valor."

Back to School Teacher Problems, No Cell Phones In Class Please!

Back to School Teacher Problems

I got 99 problems, and you being on your cell phone is 1 of them.

It's that time of year again. Back to School! Which seriously, I love. I get giddy with back to school excitement and even have my own BTS ritual of watching "School of Rock" (Jack Black) the night before the first day of school.

But let me tell you what I don't love: Having to deal with teenagers and cell phones.

Whoever the first teacher was to post THIS sign in his/her class is a down right genius in my book. And I might need to follow suit. Teenagers can appreciate some sarcastic jabs, right?

Here's another great one that I think can go right in the middle of my bulletin board:

All joking aside, how are we to handle all of the inevitable and against-the-rules cell phone usage we will see as school starts up again?

First, we need to know what the school policy is. And enforce it.

But secondly, my strategy is to keep my students so occupied and engaged by the lesson that they won't have time to look at their cell phones.

I rarely have a lesson in which my students are seated for the entire class period. Mixing things up is the name of the game! They already are enrolled in classes where they have to sit through lectures- when they get to my class, I want them to know to expect to be an active participant in the lesson. Which leaves little room for checking their FB or Instagram.

Valentine's Day is just around the corner!!

Don't have much time for celebrating El Dia de los Enamorados with your students? Check out this fun communicative activity, called "Speed Dating!"

This activity is a BLAST!! It is an awesome say to get your kids communicating 100% in Spanish in short bursts. What you do is set up your class like you're hosting a "speed dating" session, haha! My students often choose to take on a persona for this game-- Pretending to be someone famous! The responses they come up with are hilarious! :)

Having students take on a persona makes things more comfortable - we want our kids to have fun, right?? Well, they DO when they're pretending to be Cinderella or Bruno Mars instead of themselves!

In the lesson packet there are easy to understand instructions as well as a "citas rapidas" tracking sheet for your kids. It helps them remember questions they may want to ask.

The kids also fill out a questionnaire at the end, a good way to wrap up the activity.

Mindfulness Week 1 Check In

Hello all!

My first week of Mindfulness was.... not what I expected.

I have no doubts that Mindfulness is for me. And no doubts that it does work and can work. I went into this expecting it to be amazing and wonderful! What threw me for a loop was that.... The first meditation we were supposed to do every day for 45 minutes was SO boring! haha NOT what I expected.

I'm not a total newbie to meditation and I already had experience. So....

The first meditation we practice for 45 minutes each day, ahem, supposed to practice 45 minutes every day. The first night I did it while getting ready for bed and actually fell asleep because I was bored. The 2nd night I decided to try the 20 minute version instead, but was still bored. The third day I thought, why don't I just do one of my other meditations that I already KNOW I enjoy?? So I did that for the rest of the week.

And then I had to go to my 2nd Mindfulness class and fess up that this girl who was SO excited to try Mindfulness meditations couldn't even DO them because she was bored.

My preconceived ideas of what to expect totally sabotaged my first week of Mindfulness meditating!

My (awesome) teacher asked what she could do to help me want to do the meditations every day. And I said that a reason to do them would be nice, lol. I mean, why do something that I find super boring if I don't *have* to?

Her reason is a good one: Because it works. The science proving that it works is remarkable. It is going to work. But it is not going to work if I don't do it. 'Nuf said.

Here's to Week 2 and actually using the prescribed meditation this time!! My plan is to use Young Living's Stress Away oil with each meditation this week.

Grin and Grab it Day 1-25-2015 Free Products for One Day

This post is about another blog hop Grin and Grab it Day 1-25-2015 with free products for one day. Spanish class: REVIEW Games for Verb Conjugation!

Picture this:

Your ENTIRE Spanish class ALL participating in a REVIEW of SPANISH VERB CONJGUATIONS and every single one of those kiddos having FUN!

Yup, totally possible! Octopus On Guard is a super fun game that your students will actually ASK to play!

One of the BEST things about this game: NO prep! Just print and go!

The premise of the game is that the Octopus is guarding her treasure and students must “pop the bubbles” in the way!

--Students pair up and are armed with a marker (or highlighter or colored pencil, etc!).

--The teacher calls out conjugated verbs in English and the students race each other to find the correct conjugations in Spanish.

--When a student finds the correct conjugation, they “pop the bubble” by coloring it in.
   (The student who found the correct bubble can then tell their partner where to find it so the partner can color it in too.)

--Whoever finds the correct conjugation first, earns a point.
    (My students just keep a tally on the side of their papers.)

--The student with the most points at the end wins!
   (What do they win?? Bragging rights, usually! lol)

Another way to play this as a whole class is to use it as a "matamoscas" or "flyswatter" game!

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, a teacher's perspective

Are you making any 2015 New Year's Resolutions? (Please comment below!)

I'm a bit.... adverse to New Year's Resolutions, as I never seem to be able to keep them... Usually they've been about losing weight, eating healthier, etc., etc.

Because New Year's Resolutions have been so hard for me to keep, one year my resolution was: Wear more flowers in my hair! Which I did. With flair! (See my La Profesora Frida picture for proof!) ;)

This year I've taken the leap and have signed up for a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction workshop. This was something my doctor suggested for me years ago, and at the time I couldn't work it into my schedule, so it went on the back burner. And I've pulled it back into the forefront once again and am excited to give it a go!

A Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) workshop is 8 weeks long, meeting once a week for 2.5 hours each time. Then there is a 4 week 1/2 day silent retreat at the very end.

According to The Center For Mindfulness, I should be able "Learn to cultivate life-long tools that will help you maximize your life, even when facing stress, illness and pain."

During the course I can expect:

Guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices

Gentle stretching and mindful yoga

Group dialogue and discussions aimed at enhancing awareness in everyday life

Individually tailored instruction

Daily home assignments

Four home practice CDs and a home practice workbook

I found these 2 teas at the local health store and thought they'd be a nice addition to my Mindful journey! :)

I'm really looking forward to my first class! I'll keep you all posted as to my thoughts about the MBSR course and my progress!

Spanish Class: Adding Pronunciation / Speaking Activities without interrupting your schedule.

I have seen a few teachers post that their New Year's (Teaching) Resolutions include creating more opportunities to grade Pronunciation activities in their classrooms.

Creating Pronunciation grades can be tricky. How often should one grade Pronunciation? Obviously, we assess pronunciation all day, every day in our classes. We model pronunciation and listen for mistakes and help our students modify as necessary.

But our students need to understand the importance of correct pronunciation. After all, "Yo tengo hambre" is NOT the same thing as saying "Yo tengo hombre..." ;)

And if your students have seen Will Ferrell's cute Tweet floating around on Facebook, they may have finally learned that accents DO matter and there is a rather important difference between años and anos....and papá and papa...

The problem I ran into in the past with Pronunciation grades was that it always took a 1/2 class period to a whole period to get through all students. And what do the other students do while each student comes up to my desk to recite their Pronunciation assignment??

Well, I think I've solved the problem. :)
