Eating while studying

If you’re the kind of person with a desk worthy of the Nutty Professor – drawers filled with choclate bars; packets of crisps where your pencil case should be; biscuit crumbs in every crevice of your keyboard – maybe it’s time for a snack swap.

Unless you’re after Sherman Klump’s curvaceous physique, you’re in danger of gaining an unwanted procrastination pot-belly. Here at The Student Guide, we’re just as guilty of desktop snacking as anybody else.

We’ve tried and tested the best and the worst of healthy procrastination treats and found a few to help you reach the end of your essays.

A strawberry smoothie with marshmallows. Put a few strawberries and some milk in a blender and add a couple of marshmallows at the end to make it feel indulgent! If it’s not strawberry season, opt for frozen berries instead.

Half a low fat bagel with low fat cream cheese. Bagels have a satisfyingly sweet taste without the added calories.

A few slices of Malt Loaf. This is sweet and chewy, like a delicious bread-cake lovechild

A small bag of banana chips. The healthy variety are the dried banana chips rather than the fried ones. Generally the bananas are coated with honey or sugar for that sweet kick you need.

A low fat chocolate bar such as a Flyte or a Blue Riband instead a calorie-laden bad-boy such as a Snickers

Choose a bowl of Shreddies rather than Crunchy Nut Clusters (1 g fat v 6.3g per 50g, well according to www.weightlossresources.co.uk) They also fill you up as they are made of wholegrain, so you’ll want less snacks anyway!

1 bag of Twiglets has 3.2 g fat per bag vs. Walkers Prawn Cocktail crisps at 11.2 gs

Snack A Jacks are low fat, low calorie and surprisingly tasty (especially the caramel flavour), despite seemingly being made of cardboard and air.

If you are being really good then go for some fresh or frozen fruit.

Raw carrot sticks or celery with the added treat of hummus

Whole grain bread pitas or crackers with low fat peanut butter for a quick boost.

Natural yogurt with honey is a delicious and cheap treat.

A handful of nuts (tastes even better with added raisins)

Chocolate – switch to dark chocolate as it’s much better for you than milk chocolate, which is very fatty. Also always buy a small bar so that you aren’t tempted to eat the a huge one – even if it’s discounted, don’t go there

Crisps – go for Walkers Baked instead of full fat Pringles.

How to become an investment banker

The inside track on how to break into investment banking

It's no secret that the graduate job market has become much more competitive since the global financial crisis of 2008, but the investment banking industry has always arguably been one of the toughest to break into.

On the face of it, prospects for graduates are better in 2012 than in recent years. Graduate research company High Fliers suggests that the leading investment banks intend to hire 2,700 this year, which is a 5% increase on 2011.

Investment banking is also the highest paying industry for graduates, and median salaries have increased to £45k this year – or a 7% uplift on last year.

A caveat to all this is that, as many recent headlines have shown, the investment banking industry is going through a tough period. Things can change – last year, the leading investment banks intended to hire 3,300 graduates, but the actual number of new recruits was around 2,650. Similarly, the 2012 figure is still over 20% down on the pre-crisis 2007 figure.

The fundamental point, however, is that these roles remain a popular choice among graduates and therefore the fight for places is as intense as ever – there were more than 230 applicants for every vacant role last year, according to the Association of Graduate Recruiters, and this is expected to increase in 2012.

Guiding you through the graduate recruitment process

How can we at eFinancialCareers help? Quite simply, we offer insight into all the careers available within the financial sector, as well as tailored news and advice around every aspect of the graduate recruitment process – from applications, psychometric tests, assessment centres and tips on making it through the interview process.

We also offer advice on how to gain an internship and capitalise on this to secure a full-time offer. Internships are integral to breaking into investment banking – typically around 70% of graduate places are filled by interns, particularly those roles in the front office (or the investment banking and sales, trading and research divisions of banks).

"The internship programme is more than just 'summer work experience' – it is a two-way interview as it allows the employer to assess your ability and potential, and enables the candidate to determine whether this is the right industry, firm or division for them," Isabella Crocker, vice president APAC graduate recruitment at Deutsche Bank, told our annual graduate guide Careers in Financial Markets .

How to avoid tripping up during interviews

If you make it through the application process, and the online numerical tests (which you can practice at eFinancialCareers), you'll be invited to interview, and this is where the hard work really starts.

Banks test potential recruits by posing four types of interview questions – competency (or how you would behave in a given situation), motivation (why you want to work for a particular company/job/division), technical (testing your knowledge of finance or the sector you're applying to) and brain-teasers.

It's the latter where most graduates fall down. How would you respond to questions like 'Why are manhole covers round?' or 'How many tennis balls could you fit into Bank underground station?', for instance?

This is the tip of the iceberg, and we can offer in-depth advice on how to make it through the interview process. We provide real examples of interview questions, bank by bank and for specific divisions, along with ideal answers as well as tips from people who have made it through the graduate recruitment process.

On the website you will find the latest graduate hiring news, top tips from senior industry figures, a full list of key deadlines, sample numerical tests, as well as our online trading game, the Investment Challenge, and much more.

The eFinancialCareers Student Section will ensure that you are among the best informed candidates around, which is half the battle when applying for a job in the highly competitive world of finance.

Top 5 South American weird and wonderful

Unknown to Europeans until 1492, South America is full of weird and wonderful curiosities from ages past...

	Machu Picchu Peru

Machu Picchu is one of the most beautiful and enigmatic ancient sites in the entire world. The incredible ruins are made even more spectacular by their dramatic positioning, perched on top of a forested Andean mountain top, shrouded in the clouds.

Known as The Lost City of the Inca Empire, Machu Picchu was hidden from the world until 1911, when it was rediscovered by an American archaeologist.

One of the most visited sites in all of South America, many hike the Inca Trail through the Andes to reach the city at sunrise and experience the awe-inspiring view of Machu Picchu laid out below their feet. Truly magnificent.

	Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

The rolling landscape of Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia truly is otherworldly. Basically this place is just salt; miles and miles of endless salt. It really is mindboggling, and utterly surreal.

This strange, alien world is scattered with naturally occurring salt mounds and salt cubes, which provide excellent, if not clichéd, photograph opportunities. Incredibly, when it rains, a thin layer of water sits above the salt to create a gigantic mirror effect, which reflects the vast blue sky above.

	Easter Island, Chile

This place is WEIRD. A tribe called the Rapa Nui, who eventually ended up eating each other, somehow got to this remote island in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean and set up a community.

Nobody knows exactly where the Rapa Nui came from or how they arrived on Easter Island. Even more mysteriously, before departing from the mainland, they packed huge blocks of stone into their boats, which they then carved to make massive statues of heads, which they placed all around the island. Very strange.

	Amazon Basin, Brazil

The Amazon Basin is unbelievably huge. Although 40% of the Basin is in Brazil, there are few countries in South America left untouched by this massive ecosystem: Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana all have a piece.

The Amazon Rainforest is one of the richest and most complex environments in the whole world, home to all sorts of weird and wonderful plant and animal life. According the WWF, one in ten of all known species on planet earth can be found in the Amazon. What’s more, this area is so vast, there are parts of the forest that have still never been explored.

	Nazca, Peru

From the ground, this region looks normal enough. Once you take to the air however, the secrets of this land are soon revealed.

Etched into the dry grounds of this landscape are a series of ancient geoglyphs; huge drawings and symbols that scar the earth’s surface. Ranging from complex geometric shapes to depictions of animals, plants and humans, it is estimated that these prehistoric images took hundreds of years to create, although others speculate a more otherworldly influence...

The Well Digger’s Daughter is a charming French thoroughbred about love, loss and redemption

French actor Daniel Auteuil makes his directorial debut with The Well Digger’s Daughter, a wartime romance set in the hazy landscape of Provence.

The story is simple – a well digger (Auteuil) discovers that his beautiful but innocent 18 year-old daughter (Astrid Bergès-Frisbey) has fallen pregnant by the son of a wealthy shop owner. The would-be couple are torn apart by war and class divide, and the bastard child threatens to bring shame upon both families.

The film is understated and gentle. The bucolic landscape and excellent cinematography make this a lovely vignette of French rural life. A good introduction for foreign-film beginners.

The Well Digger's Daughter is released on DVD February 20.

NUS urges national student walkout

	Week of action next month

The National Union of Students (NUS) is urging its members to stage a mass walkout in protest against the increase in tuition fees.

After a consultation on what the NUS's campaigning priorities should be, an email was sent to thousands of students at the end of last week informing them of plans to hold a five-day week of action in March.

The union has planned the week of action to take place on 12 March until 16 March with a national walkout planned on Wednesday 14.

"Students will not stand by and let the coalition press ahead with its destructive plans to sell off and privatise our universities and colleges. We want openness on the future of our education," the email read.

"The walkout will show the government what campuses will look like if they continue to press ahead with their plans for privatisation – deserted."

Four days later, a lobby of parliament will take place to "educate our MPs about the issues so they can question the Minister on our behalf."

The government says the increase will not have a negative impact on students.

"Most new students will not pay upfront, there will be more financial support for those from poorer families and everyone will make lower loan repayments than they do now once they are in well paid jobs," a spokesperson for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said.

"Students, like other citizens, have the right to participate in peaceful protest."

To celebrate the release of Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance in 3D on February 17, we’re giving away a ghostly goody bag

Renowned stunt motorcycle rider Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) did a deal with the devil that saw him transformed into the legendary vigilante known as The Ghost Rider.

Now in an attempt to keep his soul sucking alter ego at bay, Blaze has isolated himself in the remotest of locations, but, when Moreau, a spirited monk (Idris Elba) implores him to save a young boy from the devil himself (Ciarán Hinds), Blaze must put aside his reluctance to bring out the Ghost Rider in order to face his own demons and possibly rid himself of the curse forever.

From the writers/directors of Crank, Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, comes the adrenaline filled Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance, loaded with action and incredible 3D special effects.

DIY Cocktails

Have the best pre-drinks on campus

If you’re posh enough to drink cocktails instead of beer, do yourself a favour and learn how to make them at home. Cocktails in pubs and clubs are outrageously expensive (even if they do get the job done), so it’s worth investing in a few bottles of spirits so you can do it yourself. And besides, even if they taste unpalatable, at least you’ll have a cool drinks cabinet to impress your mates with.

	The Original Cosmopolitan

A firm favourite amongst the girls, it’s fruity, refreshing, wickedly pink and tongue-teasingly sour.

 1 1/2 shot Vodka

 1 shot Cointreau

 1 shot Cranberry Juice

 Dash of Lime Juice

 1 Lime for garnish

Pour all the ingredients into the cocktail shaker along with cracked ice and shake vigorously. Pour into a cocktail glass and serve with slice of lime for decoration.

	Classic Margarita

There are many variations on the perennially popular Margarita, but the original has stood the test of time. Treat yourself to this tasty favourite – a cocktail icon.

 1 1/2 shots of Tequila

 1/2 shot Cointreau

1 shot Lemon or Lime Juice

Moisten the inner and outer edge of a cocktail glass with a slice of lemon or lime and dip in fine salt. Shake the ingredients well with ice and strain into the prepared glass.

	Woo Woo

This Wetherspoons staple is easy to make at home (it’ll be less diluted as well).

 2 shots Vodka

 2 shots Peach Schnapps

 Cranberry Juice

Put all ingredients into shaker with ice cubes and shake. Pour into a tall tumbler and serve.

	Blue Hawaiian

This might look like a needlessly complicated glass of WKD, but don’t be fooled. It’s much classier.

 2 shots of Light Rum

 2 shots of Pineapple Juice

 1 shot of Blue Curaçao

1 shot of Cream of Coconut

 1 slice Pineapple

 1 Cherry

Blend light Rum, blue Curacao, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut with ice in an electric blender at high speed. Pour contents into a tall glass and decorate with the slice of pineapple and a cherry. Ooh exotic.

	Singapore Sling

Fruity, bubbly and a definite must for gin lovers.

 2 shots Gin

 1 shot Cherry Brandy

 Soda Water

 1/2 shot Lemon Juice

 1 Lime slice

 Dash of Sugar Syrup

Put all the ingredients, apart from the soda water, into the cocktail mixer with the ice cubes and shake. Strain and pour into tumbler glasses and then top up with the soda water.

	Jamaican Sunset

Rich and warming – like a hug in a glass.

 2 measure Captain Morgan's Rum

 1 shot White Rum

 1 shot Orange Juice

 1 shot Pineapple Juice

Shake all ingredients together in shaker and strain into an ice-filled glass.

Top 5 European city breaks

	Getaway cities with a difference

	Prague

Prague’s historic bridges, towers and churches combined with its modern music, art and dining cultures establishes this city as an alternative hotspot.

Prague’s city centre has been designated a World Heritage Site and popular attractions include the New Town with the historic Wenceslas Square, the Astronomical Cloc and the Metronome – a giant functional metronome that looms over the city. You can also see the National Museum or State Opera and Prague lays claim to the largest castle in the world.

The city has a huge and varied art collection ranging from Art Nouveux to Baroque and Gothic to Neo-Classical.

The vibrant nature of the city means there are plenty of cafes, restaurants and cheap apartments and hotels for travellers from all over the world.

The introduction of low cost flights has made Prague one of the most popular short-stay destinations in Europe.

	Lisbon

Lisbon thrives on being one of the best city and beach combo destinations in Europe. From the bustling city centre, you can be relaxing on the picturesque beach, less than thirty minutes away.

Take a ride around the city on the century-old wooden trams and iron funiculars that trundle over the seven steep hills across which the settlement lies.

At the top of one of the city’s most towering hills is the Moorish Alfama neighbourhood. Here, the Arabic-cum-medieval castles make for a stunning attraction.

The famous Baixa district takes you back to the bygone culture of the city where herbalists, haberdashers and tailors barter on the streets.

Enjoy the spectacular city views of Lisbon from the hilltop castle of St George. The castle also overlooks the Targes estuary.

A popular nightspot for travellers is the bar-filled cobbled lanes of boho Bairro Alto

	Cologne

One of Germany’s media, tourism and business hotspots, Cologne has an international reputation for its vibrant atmosphere. The streets of Cologne are a tantalising mix of pubs, restaurants and clubs as well as historical monuments.

Cologne features numerous cultural relics from the past 2,000 years, such as the famous Roman Dionysus mosaic, the medieval Overstolzenhaus which was Rome’s first aristocratic family home and the Gürzenich Hall, popularly known as the city’s ‘front parlour’.

From the city, you can take boat trips on the Rhine all the way to Strasbourg in France. The highlight of the route lies between St. Goar and Rudesheim where the stunning views of castles and vineyards provide lasting memories for travellers.

Regarded as one of the most liberal cities in Germany, Cologne boasts over 3,000 pubs and restaurants and you can often find people drinking Cologne’s speciality, Kölsch beer.

The main areas to soak in the city’s dynamic nightlife are the Old Town, the Kwartier Latäng (Cologne’s student area) around the Zülpicher and Luxemburger Straße.

	Istanbul

Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey, basks in its unique position as the physical and cultural border between Asia and Europe.

Its famous years spent at the centre of various empires means Istanbul boasts an array of historic and religious places. The Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Sultanahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque), and Basilica Cistern located around Sultanahmet Squareare enchanting reminders of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods.

Istanbul Modern, with its exhibitions of contemporary Turkish art, can be found on the waterfront of Karaköy, one of the oldest and most historic districts of the city.

Yacht cruises are a popular activity for travellers who can take in the stunning views of the Bosphorus, the strait that forms part of the boundary between the two continents, whilst eating a meal in one of the many floating restaurants.

The city also has one of the oldest subways in the world: the ‘Tunel’ which was built in 1876.

Istanbul was voted European City of Culture in 2010.

	Söll

Once looked down on as a lads’ getaway destination, in recent times Söll has transformed its image into an attractive and cheap skiing resort for all.

The amenities here have played a key part in making it a popular option with families looking for cheaper ski trips.

The unofficial capital of SkiWelt ski resort, Söll has a dozen villages with 250km of skiing and 94 lifts. The area is famous for providing the gateway to a fantastic circuit in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps.

Another lure of Söll is its beginner friendly pistes. It is a fantastic starting point for an inexperienced skier, but located in an area where you can venture onto other, more challenging ski routes.

There are no bus services in the area to rescue you if you ski too far so be cautious when planning your route!

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum team up for hilarious police comedy

In the action-comedy 21 Jump Street, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are more than ready to leave their adolescent problems behind. Joining the police force and the secret Jump Street unit, they use their youthful appearances to go undercover in a local high school. As they trade in their guns and badges for backpacks, Schmidt and Jenko risk their lives to investigate a violent and dangerous drug ring. But they find that high school is nothing like they left it just a few years earlier – and neither expects that they will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind.
