This post has been updated to include a link to a survey hosted by Matchstick. For every completed survey the agency will donate $2 to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Last week I attended a fashion show, held at the newly renovated Arcadian Court, in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. In addition to a worthy cause, the show was unique because the 15 Canadian designers showcased all used bathroom tissue, yup TP, (in sheets as opposed to the perforated strips) in the design of their creations. From evening dresses to children’s wear, an entire fashion show of clothing made of bathroom tissue is an impressive feat. So it was not an easy task when I was asked to create a collage representing my favourite look for the Cashmere Facebook page. Ultimately, eco-designer Laura Siegel’s ethereal frock won my vote. The theme of the show was “Hollywood” and I thought that Siegel’s design had a ghostly quality that also reminded me of the ocean. Sadly, I had to run immediately after the show, so I was not able to ask her whether this is at all accurate. Here is my collage as inspired by Laura Siegel’s design for White Cashmere Collection:

It’s one of those brands that plays a significant role in most beauty routines at some point. For me, as a grade 7 student, White Musk is the first fragrance that I wore. I recently visited the newly redesigned Body Shop Pulse Boutique at the Eaton Center (so named as it is the ‘artery’ of global Fair Trade partnerships – organic alcohol from Central America, coconut oil from Samoa, peppermint from English farm collectives, stationery from Nepal), a serious upgrade from the older style shop, that allows visitors to try and experience the product (think the beauty equivalent of Apple stores). Whether you’re unwavering fan of The Body Shop, or want to be reunited, The Style House has a contest is for you: two gift baskets filled with the 10 most iconic & popular products by the Body Shop. A value of over $150 each. No purchase necessary, simply click here for details.

I was recently contacted by the Professional Leather Cleaners Association (PLCA – a not for profit trade association founded by a group of highly experienced leather cleaners from across North America) with tips on how to care for leather. Yawn, right. Wrong! As one of the most important materials of F/W, it is rather timely. And their suggestions on how to keep leather (& leather-like) items are up-to-date & super simple.

Here are my most coveted leather pieces of the season, and how I’d wear them, followed by PLCA’s tips.

Always hang leather garments on wide or padded hangers to maintain their shape. Use shoetrees in footwear and stuff empty handbags with tissue to help retain their shape.

Never store leather goods in plastic or other non-breathable covers. This will cause leather to become dry.

Allow wet or damp leather to air-dry naturally away from any direct heat source. Leather can be treated with a conditioner to restore flexibility while suede can be brushed with a terry towel to restore its look.

In winter, promptly remove salt deposits from garments and footwear by sponging with water; follow with the above treatment for wet or damp leather.

Avoid very humid and dry environments as well as direct sunlight.

Do not use waxes, silicone products or other leather preparations that will impair a garment’s ability to breathe.

Wrinkles should hang out. If ironing is desired, set iron on rayon setting, use heavy brown wrapping paper as a pressing cloth on right side of the garment and a quick hand to prevent overheating and shine.

Avoid spraying perfumes or hair sprays while wearing your garment and do not apply pins, adhesive badges or tape. Wearing a scarf at the neckline will help keep hair and body oil away from the collar.

Hems may be fixed with a tiny amount of rubber cement. For best results, see a leather care professional.

All products formulated for at-home use should be tested on an inconspicuous part of the garment.

I recently attended an event held at the Liberty Village head office of MOON in celebration of their soon-to-launch e-commerce site. As a lucky attendee, I was given a gift card and the opportunity to pre-shop the site which launches September 15 (for those who can’t wait, visit the pop-up shop, 171 East Liberty St. on September 14). Oh happy day! Those who are familiar with the label (up until now available exclusively at the Bay) will understand that it was difficult for me to stop myself from buying the whole lot of well-priced items (nothing is over $119) but, reason prevailed, and I shopped within the limit of my gift. It arrived yesterday and it is lovely and versatile, so much so, that it spurred today’s One Item, Three Ways post (which, as an aside, could have been Three Items, Three Ways, as I am equally as enamored with the red ela Chibi Lady purse –I’ve already included in two shoots– & the Rachel Comey Zindler loafers which I got on sale earlier in the year at The Narwhal).
