Munday's death 1909

Here are a couple of obituaries that were glued into the family bible for the same person. Waller Munday was my grandfather's brother who died when he was 20 years old. I took these photos before I had my flip-pal scanner, so - sorry for the blurriness!

From unknown paper - published about 2 Jul 1909:

"Death of Waller Munday.
The death angel visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. James W Munday of Wisdom community on July 2nd, 1909 and claimed for its victim, Waller, a bright and promising young man. He was brother and sister Munday's second boy; one boy and two girls older than he. Waller was born March 13th 1889; died July 2nd 1909.

About May 14, he was taken sick and when the doctors were called they pronounced him in a very bad condition with appendicitis and that an operation would have to be performed. They made arrangements at once for Dr. Schackner of Louisville, to come and perform the operation. The 26th day of May he was operated on and the doctors seemed to think that chances were good for him to **ver, and did improve for several days, but finally it was noticed ? he was growing worse, until the doctor come and broke the news to his friends that there was no earthly chance for him.

It is a sad hour in our lives when we hear such messages, though we know it was not because he did not have the proper attention. He had the very best attention and care. Unfortunately, Waller was away from home when he was taken sick. He was working for his cousin Tom Franklin, near Know Lick, and they with his friends did all that was in human power to do, but God knows best and in his infinite love he deals with his children in the best way.

Waller was a good boy and everyone who knew him loved him. On July 1st, I visited him and broke the the {sic} message to him that he could not live but a few hours and his answer was, I know it, I am trying to prepare for that after reading from Gods word, that will not return void unto him, but will accomplish that whereunto it is sent and prayed time and again.

While singing that good old song, "Jesus Lover of My Soul," he quietly and calmly whispered in a low but a different tone to that ? and said, "I am saved I am ? easy," and from that hour ? was one of the happiest boys I ever saw. He sang two songs clear through, one was "When the roll is called up Yonder, " the other, "There is a light at the River," and he would say to everyone that would come in, "I am so glad to tell you I am saved." It was sad to hear him talk to his brother and sister telling them not put it off as he had. About 4 o'clock at his own request he was received into the church and baptised. He left a bright testimony of Heaven and immortal glory, and his only regret seemed to be that he put off his soul's salvation so long but the last words he said to his father were, "It is peace, sweet peace; I am passing through the pearly gates."

The funeral was largely attended. After the funeral, conducted by the scribe, his remains was interred in the family burying ground near his home. He leaves a father, mother, six brothers and two sisters, with a host of relatives and friends to mourn his death. We can only say your loss is his gain. You can go to him, but he can not come back to you. The lord will comfort you and bless in all your bereavements. J.M.C"

Another clipping about Waller's death. Probably from a different paper, also of unknown date:

"Mr Waller Munday died at the home of Mr. Tom Franklin, near Knob Lick, last Friday after a long illness from peirtonitis. He was operated on about six weeks ago, and was seemingly improving until a few days ago, when he grew worse and died, after intense agony. He was about twenty-two years of age and a young man of fine moral habits. The remains were interred at Wisdom last Saturday afternoon, in the presence of a large concourse of friends and relatives, in the Slemmons burying-ground. The deceased leaves a father, Mr. J. W. Monday, mother, sisters, brothers and a large circle of relatives and friends all over Barren and Metcalfe, who will learn of his death with profound regret."

I find several things interesting in these two clippings:

The first clipping has Waller's exact birth and death dates showing his age was 20 years old. The second one has his approximate age, "about 22 years old." I know that the first obituary has the correct information because of many other sources; such as the family bible record, his death certificate and his tombstone information.

That a doctor from Louisville was "called" to operate on Waller. Even though phone were invented as early as 1873/4, according to Wikipedia, how prevalent were they in this small town and community? I don't know. Would they have really called the doctor on the phone or would they have written? I'm guessing that they would have found a phone in the community and called Louisville for such an important situation.

I have a couple of pictures of Waller that I have posted before. They can be founds here and here.

I don't normally do that but, it was at a good price so I thought what the heck. Of course, it's been fun playing with all of the apps and games that are available, but my online presence with posting to this blog has suffered. :{

I'm not really sure why it took me so long, but today I realized that Blogger has an app that allows me to post from my tablet. So I downloaded and installed it to take it for a trial run.

This is the first post that I am posting with the app.

Creating this posting is not as fast as creating a post with my computer as I am not use to typing with the small keyboard that pops up at the bottom of the screen, but it does get the job done.

The app allows you to edit the post like in the full web edition that I normally use. It also allows you to attach or take pictures and add them to the post. The picture you see in this posting was taken with the app while creating this post.

Although I am not sure of how or if I am going to be able to position the picture as of yet. As I am typing this post it doesn't as appear as though the app gives me a choice of where I would like to position the picture. That's too bad.

I also noticed that it doesn't allow me to use my automatic signature line that I have in the full version but again it allows me to get my thoughts down while in the mood.

This posting was not supposed to be a review of the app, but just a letting you know that I'm still here and what I had found in the app world that might become useful. So we'll see how often I use the app in the future.

Please let me know if any of you use this app and if you do what do you think.....oh yeah also any tips and tricks that you might have learned while using it.

Until next time,

Deborah

The other day I was listening to the Genies Down Under podcast on the ride into work when the hostess, Maria, started talking about other genealogy podcasts that she listens to. Two of the ones she talked about, The Genealogy Guys and Digging up your Roots, I am already subscribed to and listen to on a regular basis. However, the third one, Artisan Ancestors, was a new one for me.

So I thought I would try it out and see if I wanted to add it to my ever growing number of podcasts to which I listen.

Well, I am four episodes in and am very impressed.

The podcast is hosted by Jon Kay. The website describes the podcast as:
What is the question you ask?

Well, before I tell you, let me ask you a question.

A person moves away from their family to the other side of the country, settles down but doesn't get married or have children, and lives the rest of their life in this "new" area. When this person dies, who let's the family know that this person has died? You know, the family that they left behind to move out west, back east or just simply away.

So that question sparked the question that I finally asked myself...Who let my Kentucky ancestor know that his brother had died in Genoa, Nevada?

The answer to this question...I don't know. But someone sure as shooting did!

How do I know that my Kentucky ancestor knew about the death of his Nevada living brother? Well, it's right there in the family bible, written in my ancestor's handwriting and everything.

Sorry for the blurry picture. Garland Slemmons, in the left column, age 74 yr. Died Apr 25, 1898

But Deborah, it doesn't say that Garland died in Nevada, how do you know that?

Excellent question my dear Watson! (can you tell that I watched the last Sherlock Holmes movie last night?)

Anyway, I have Garland's obituary and death record that prove when he died in Genoa, Nevada. But while reading his obituary the above question crossed my mind again:

"Death of Another Pioneer -
Garland Slemmons, better known as "Major Slemmons," died at his home in Genoa last Monday morning about 3 o'clock. Deceased was a native of Kentucky and 75 years of age.

He was a bachelor and a warmhearted old man, a great reader and a life-long Democrat, Well informed and deeply interested in the affairs of the nation, he was always ready to enter into a political disenssion, expressing his views and convictions firmly, earnestly and emphatically. He went into a political debate with the same energy an ordinary man displays in putting out a fire. His speech was earnest, his actions forcible and impressive. He was a searcher after truth and he longed to solve the mystery of things, especially things of a political nature. A good, honest, true-hearted old man was Major.

Mr Slemmons came to California in early days and engaged in placer mining in El Durado county. In 1860 or '61 he came to Genoa and resided here ? from that date.
He leaves no relatives in this section. He said a few days before his death that he had relatives years ago in Kentucky, but that he had not heard from them for years and he did not know whether they were alive yet or not.

He leaves a small amount of property and ?? old house and lot in Genoa.
The funeral took place Tuesday evening at 1 o'clock from the M. E. Church, Rev. George ??. The remains were buried in Genoa cemetery, beside the graves of ? V. Spencer and George ? {two old friends of the deceased.}"
April 29 1898 R.C. newspaper."

Did they (the settlers of his estate, his local friends or someone else) put an inquiry into a Kentucky paper to locate the family of Garland Slemmons long ago resident? I don't know, but I would really like to find out.

How long did it take for them (the Kentucky family) to hear of the death? I don't know, but there was a "hunt" for Kentucky family members, it couldn't have taken to long because Asher (my Kentucky ancestor) died almost two years later on 21 Apr 1900.

Do you have any unexplained cross-country notifications? If so, how were they worded? How long did it take for word to make it back of the death?

Hope you enjoyed, glad you stopped by and please come back again ;)

The first clipping is midway down the page on the left and tells us this:

"Retired Farmer Dies - Special to the Courier-Journal
Edmonton, Ky., Dec 3 - Robert Dewett Knight, 59 Edmonton retired farmer, died of a hear attach at 4:30 a.m. today at his home after a long illness. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Phoebe Knight; two daughters, Mrs. Bill Cooksey, Edmonton, and Mrs. James Cooksey, Louisville; two brothers, Paul and Rufus Knight, East Fork, and three sisters, Mrs. Jim Shirley and Mrs. Will Shirley, Edmonton, and Miss Sallie M. Knight, Glasgow. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Butler Funeral home."

Seems like a lot of sisters marrying men with the same last name. Wonder if they were brothers marrying sisters? Anyway, on to the next clipping. It tells us:

"Ex-Farmer Dies at 85 - Special to the Courier-Journal
Greensburg, Ky., Dec 3. - William Dave Young, 85, retired farmer, died this afternoon at his home in the Little Barren community after a short illness. He had served for several years as a deacon of Little Barren Separate Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bird Martin Young; two daughters, Mrs. Hattie Jones, Greensburg, and Mrs. Lucy Houk, Pierce; two sons, Harry Young, Greensburg, and Willie Young, Little Barren; 19 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at Little Barren Church. The body is at Cowherd & Parrott Funeral Home here."

According to the Kentucky Death Index 1911-2000 found at Ancestry.com, William D Young died in Green County, Kentucky on 3 Dec 1956 at the age of 85.

Now to the best clipping:

"Married Three Years, Parents, Find They're Brother, Sister
Hereford, England, Feb. 18 - (AP) - Mr. and Mrs. Geoffrey Hughes have discovered after three years of marriage and two children that they are brother and sister. Already separated by the grim knowledge, they are working on an annulment.
The 24-year-old mother told reporters today the tragedy began in 1934 when her parents died and she and her brother, two years older, were sent to an orphanage.
Margaret was soon adopted by a family named Stanham and took their name. As Margaret Stanham she met young Geoffrey Hughes in 1948. Three years later they were married.
Their first child, Robert, is no 2 and their youngest, Michael is five months old.
"Soon after Michael's birth," Margaret said, "a woman told me my real name was Hughes and that Geoffrey is my brother. I went at once to the registrar of births. He looked up the records and to my horror I found that the woman was right.
"Geoffrey and I parted immediately," she added. "He was heartbroken. He was devoted to the children and we were very happy. I do not know where he is now.
"I do not know what to do but even if I have to work night and day I will never be parted from my children.
Registrar W. G. Bacon confirmed Margaret's story. He described the marriage as a "one in a million chance."
Mrs. Hughes said she did not list her antecedents at the time of her marriage because she was an orphan and did not even know her actual name.
Hughes works as a traveling lumberjack. He has held several different jobs since leaving the Royal Air Force.
Stanham died in 1950 and Mrs. Stanham soon afterward. The home Margaret was raised in was an ordinary middle class British family.
The Hereford County Council will hold an inquiry into the case, which is believed to have first reached the public and press through a chatty neighbor.
Another neighbor said last night "a friend" had told her how "very much alike" the Hughes looked."

WOW! What else can you say? I knew I had read something like this in the news no too long ago so I Googled the terms: couple find out they are related. Should be an interesting set of of hits.

Over 1 million hits....WHAT! Now, of course, there are duplicates and other hits that don't really match this search verbatim, but a large number of the hits do belong. THIS. IS. INSANE!

In trying to find out from what year this clipping comes, I turned to our old friend Google and actually found another paper that this article had ran: the Prescott Evening Courier on 18 Feb 1955. If you want to see it, the link is: http://ow.ly/bzcF1
If you've hung with me this long, I'm guessing that the memory book doesn't need much of an introduction, so here goes.

The first clipping on the left reads as follows:

"Eldene Bennett Passes at the age of Sixteen
Earth was saddened, Heaven rejoiced, and Mother was made glad in the early hours of December 23, 1956 when Eldene, 16 year old daughter of Rev. Homer Bennett and the late Blanche Yates Bennett, smiled away her pain, and donned a robe of peacefulness, happiness and rest.
Surviving, besides her father, are five sisters, and four brothers, Sharon, Jimmy, Harold, Donnie, Florence, Betty, and Linda, at home, Odell, of Edmonton, Lois Bennett, and Mrs. J. W. Fudge, of Chicago, Ill.; one grandmother, Mrs. Emma Bennett, three nieces, several uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends whose hearts were saddened because of her going.
Eldene remembers her Creator and gave Him her life at the age of 12, and became a member of the Dripping Spring Baptist Church. She was a member of Metcalfe County High School Junior class, and held in high esteem by all her classmates.
When her spirit took its flight to the unseen world of Heaven, there was left behind, memories that even time itself cannot take away.
Eldene was loved by all who knew her, and the kindness, gentleness, and patience with which she met death were characteristic of the way she lived.
Though her days with those she loved best were suddenly brought to an early end, she will always live in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. And as each of those who remain, follow after her, no doutb{sic}, she will be first to welcome them to her new home.
Pallbearers and flower girls for the funeral were members of the Metcalfe County High Junior Class."

Next clipping looks like it came from the Courier-Journal, a Louisville newspaper.

"Eldene Bennett, 16, Dies at Knob Lick
Edmonton, Ky., Dec 23 - Miss Eldene Bennett, 16, died today at her home on Knob Lick Route 1. She had been ill five months.
Survivors include her father, the Rev. Homer Bennett; six sisters, Mrs. Valeria Fudge, Chicago, and Misses Lois, Florence, Betty, Linda, and Sharon Bennett, all of Knob Lick, and four brothers, Donnie, Harold, and James Bennett, all of Knob Lick, and Odell Bennett, Edmonton.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Dripping Springs Church."

The next clipping over states:

"Retired Mail Carrier, William T Kinser, Dies
Edmongton, Ky., Dec. 23 - William T. Kinser, 70, died tonight at his home in Knob Lick. A retired mail carrier, he had taught school and farmed. A daughter, Miss Banks Kinser, Knob Lick, survives.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Knob Lick Church. Burial will be in Hiseville Cemetery."

I'm not sure of the connection between my family and the subject of these clippings, unless my mother or some of her siblings went to school with Eldene's siblings and that Mr Kinser was their mail carrier. I will have to ask my mother the next time I get to talk to her about the connection.

Hope you enjoyed, glad you stopped by and please come back again ;)
Some of which were: visiting with relatives and talking to them about the family, asking around for copies of family pictures, and going with his father to old home places to take pictures.

One time after spending the weekend with his father, dad came back home and showed me the map below.

This is a map of Larue County, Kentucky that dad had gotten from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet booth at the Kentucky State Fair.

Dad had consulted with his father and had taken the time to mark all the different places that his parents had lived since their marriage in 1935. The only place that dad left off of this map was the Illinois farm where my grandparents were living when my dad was born in 1938. They lived on that farm until 1941 when they moved back to Larue County to live on the "Spratt farm", as shown on the above map.

The list of names on the map is the name of the owner of the farm from whom my grandparents rented while living and farming on that property. Years later when my grandparents referred to a certain place, they would call the farm "The Ragland place", "The Ragsdell place", etc. Including the Illinois farm, they lived on 12 different farms or house from 1935 until 1958, when they had a house built and "settled down."

The dots on the map have the name of the farm and can be matched with the farms name in the list and that will tell the year(s) they lived there.

I've heard my grandmother talk about the many moves and say she had left beautiful "antiques" behind, because they didn't have enough room in the truck that was moving them.

Hope you enjoyed, glad you stopped by and please come back again ;)

It was my first time at a major conference.

The first day I was little nervous and wasn't sure what to expect, but soon got into the swing of lectures, vendor's hall and finding my way around Cincinnati.

As I have been reading all of the blog posts that people made during and after the conference I will not try and recover everything. But I will add a couple of thoughts that I had and things that happened to me.

Here are some of the things that I took away from the conference:

I have a business website and a personal website. However, I only have cards that have my business information on them. Maybe I should have a small number of personal cards made up that have my personal website and social media information on them. This way I can give the personal cards out to people/colleagues that aren't looking to hire me.

Elizabeth Shown Mills, Dr Thomas Jones and Barbara Vines Little could give a seminar where they just read the phone book out loud and I would attend!

Going from being on the computer all day long, every day to NO computer at all for four days is extremely difficult. Talk about having withdrawals! Blah! Not fun.

I had not realized how much of a disconnect there is for me between the people that I follow on all of the social media sites (Twitter, Google+, Facebook, etc.). It's as if they're "genealogy celebrities." I saw and meet several people that I have followed or heard online for years and was as nervous as I would be if I were meeting Robert Downey, Jr.

The Conference app was great. I had already chosen the lectures I wanted to attend and had a reminder set within the app. So 15 minutes before the chosen lectures a gentle reminder would come up on my IPod to tell me where I needed to be next. Awesome!

Speaking of a genealogy celebrity that I got to meet....I got interviewed by Lisa Louise Cooke for the Genealogy Gems Podcast....what? How did that happen you ask. Well, I was standing at her booth telling her what a huge fan I am and how weird it is to see the people behind the social media contacts when she noticed that this was my first conference. She then pulled her digital recorder "thingy" from her bag and started interviewing me. WHAT!!! I don't really remember what all I said but I do remember asking her after the interview to edit out all of the babbling. So we shall see how it sounds.

So aside from going the long way home because I made a wrong turn and didn't realize it for 15 minutes, will I go to another conference? You bet!

Hope you enjoyed, glad you stopped by and please come back again ;)

So now, back to the Memory Book that my grandmother & great-grandmother's created. This week's page is an extra sheet of paper that was stuck between two pages.

"Nov 2 - 1st big snow. 15 inches in Glasgow
Oct 29 Earl Munday had operation.
Nov 12, James Earl got married
Nov 14, James Earl & bride came to Eugene's
Nov 15, they came to my house.
Nov 17 I went with them to L-ville
They visited Gilbert's Gordon's & Joseph's
Nov 15, Aunt Gracie went to Texas
Nov 28 snowed again
Nov 29 Dale had chickenpox
Dec 6, I had my hair fix. Dec 7, I had my picture taken,
Dec 9, I went to William & Madolyn with Rev & Mrs Oliver. Dec 16 W. L brought me home."

Well isn't this exciting: Snow, marriage, chickenpox and hair fixing! I don't know how she managed.

Anyhow, now for a little more information on the people. James Earl is James Earl Munday, son of the above named Earl and nephew to my grandmother. Aunt Gracie is really her sister, Gracie DeSpain Towne. Dale is her grandson, Henry Dale Robertson, Jr. Oh yeah and L-ville is Louisville, Kentucky, where Gilbert, Gordon and Joseph all lived at the time.

I can't figure out the year that this happened, but I have the marriage date of James Earl and his wife in some of my records that I don't have in my database yet. :( But I think I remember my mother telling me that James Earl came for a visit (you know it wasn't an everyday occurrence when out of town relatives came for a visit) in the late 60's, so I'll go with that for now.

Hope you enjoyed, glad you stopped by and please come back again ;)

"Visitors of Mr and Mrs R. S. Munday over the holiday weekend were: Mr and Mrs Gilbert Faulkner and children of Louisville; Mr and Mrs Henry Robertson of Indianapolis, Ind., and Mr and Mrs Lynn Chelf of Magnolia. - Mr and Mrs Henry Robertson have returned to their home in Indianapolis, Indiana. They were accompanied by his parents, Mr and Mrs L D Robertson, and sisters, Frances and Betty, who will spend a few days. - Mrs Lillian Miller, who is spending the summer at her old home place here, had as her guest Sunday night her brother, Mr Henry Lambirth, of Indiana. - Mrs Vira Mae Albright, accompanied by her daughter, Mrs Marvin Harbinson, was a pleasant caller at Miller's Grocery July 4th. - Mr Oscar Firkins and family recently visited his brothers, Messrs. Robert, Luther and Baker Firkins, of Kentucky. Mr Firkins is stationed with the U. S. Army in California and he and his family are visiting Finis Firkins and family of Columbus, Ind. They then expect to go to Texas to visit his wife's people before returning to his Army base in California. - Mr. Murrell Thomas has returned to the Army after he and his family spent a month with his parents at Glasgow. Mrs Thomas and children, Carolyn, Jeff, and David will spend the summer with her parents, Mr and Mrs D. R. Bagby. They expect to join Mr Thomas about the time school begins. - Mr and Mrs Dan Tibbs of Illinois visited Mr and Mrs Herman Gilley and other relatives in Kentucky recently. Mrs Tibbs is the former Lucy Faulkner and is a sister of Mrs Herman Gilley. - Mr Verlon Coffey, our local garage man, has been sick but is improving. - Mrs. Johnie Devore and children called on Mr and Mrs Fred Albright July 4th. - Mr and Mrs Charles Lewis of Beech Grove, Ind., visited Mrs Lewis' parents, Mr and Mrs Fred Duke, over the weekend. - Mr and Mrs Harold Ripley of Linden, Mich., visited Mrs Ripley's brother, Mr W. C. Coffey, and Mrs. Coffey, and her sister, Mrs. Edd Shockley, of Randolph. - Mr and Mrs Wilbur Gilley and daughter, Patricia, spent the weekend at their home near Wisdom. Mr Billy Joe Compton of Louisville, and Ruel Compton of Sparksville were their guests while here. - Mr and Mrs William Bunch and children, Stanley and Sheila, of Columbus, Indiana, visited friends and relatives over the weekend. - Rev Joe Richey filled his regular appointment at Dripping Springs Saturday night and Sunday morning. It was decided for all members of the church to be present next meeting, Saturday night, August 6th, and cast their vote as to what to do about tearing down the church building that has stood so long and is still a good, strong building and building a new one from the bottom or keeping the old church and making an entrance to the upper part which belongs to the church from Rennick Lodge. It seems we did not have the foresight of our forefathers or we would never have closed the outside entrance to the upper room without making another one. At that time there was no Sunday School at this church and no one seemed to think of needing more room. - Prayer meeting was discontinued here until after the revivals. Mr Pisgah's began Monday night, July 4, Kenneth Grizzle, evangelist."

Wow, did they leave anyone out of this? It doesn't look like it, they even have mention of the mother and daughter going to the grocery. How cute!

Well, if that wasn't enough here's the little clipping that is dated Nov 11, 1959 that states:

"Mrs. Margaret Sandusky, who recently underwent surgery at Norton Memorial Infirmary in Louisville, has returned home and is reportedly improving."

It is of James William Munday, my great-grandfather. When my aunt first allowed me to make a copy of it, I noticed (well how could I not) that the picture had seen better days.

But like any glad to have it type of person I made a copy of it and gave the original back to my aunt and went on my merry way.

So a couple of years ago I scanned many (unfortunately, not all) of my family pictures and added them to my computer, this well traveled picture being one of them. A few times I have opened the picture up in Picasa and worked on it with the retouch tool that Picasa includes. I had slowly noticed a difference but really thought I would never be finished with the retouching giving how worn this picture is.

Well today, I worked on this picture quite a bit more and think that I have finally gotten it to the final stages. I wanted to share it with you guys to see what you think.

I was shocked that when, after all of the scratches were removed, I clicked the "I'm feeling lucky" option that according to Picasa is the "one click fix for lighting and color" to see this image:

Wow! I was totally blown away. I think I will print out a high quality copy of this and mail it to my aunt that allowed me to copy her original so that she can enjoy it as much as I will.

Hope you enjoyed, glad you stopped by and please come back again ;)

Today's entry is going to be a long one because there are four newspaper articles on page 22 of the memory book. So without further adieu here goes:

The first newspaper article on the top left reads:

"Alf Bray Killed as Team runs away near Summer Shade - Alf Bray, 48 year-old farmer and part time minister of the Summer Shad community, was killed instantly on his farm Monday afternoon, May 13, at 3:00 p.m. when a team ran away throwing him from the wagon as he was hauling water. He suffered a broken neck.
The son of the late Jim and Louiza Harlin Bray, both of Monroe County, he was born July 18, 1908 in Barren County.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mahalie Gilley Bray; two sons, Kenneth and Gerald Bray, both at home; four daughters, Mrs. Alma Jane Goode, Summer Shade; Mrs. Wandalane Page, Beaumont; and Brenda Sue and Loretta Gail Bray,, both at home; five brothers, Hobart Bray, Albany; Otha Bray, Glasgow; Walter Bray, Louisville; Bubby Bray, Rt. 3 Glasgow, and Ossie Bray, Rt. 5 Glasgow; a sister, Mrs. Florence Gooden, Randolph.
McMurtrey Funeral Home of Summer Shade has charge of arrangements and service will be held Wednesday at 1:30 at the Dripping Springs Church with interment in the Big Meadow Cemetery. Rev. Joe Richey will conduct services. The body will remain at the funeral home until time for services."

Ah, poor Alf.

Top right newspaper article reads:

"DR. E. S. Duncan, Edmonton Doctore, Dies Suddenly - Edmonton, Ky. - Dr. E. S. Dunham, 55, well known Edmonton physician, died at 11 p.m. Friday at another doctor's office in Nashville of a sudden heart attach. R. had practiced medicine in Edmonton for the past 26 years and was regarded as one of Metcalfe County's leading citizens.
A graduate of Berea College and the University of Louisville Medical School, class of 1931, he was a member of the Southern Medical Association Academy General Practice, Kentucky Medical Association, Kentucky Medical Association, and had been on the advisory committee of the Kentucky Tuberculosis Hospital located in Glasgow.
In addition to his varied medical interests, he was very prominent in civic and community affairs and was active in the Edmonton Lions Club and other community groups. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dora Dunham, two daughters, Rose Marie Dunham, at home; and Mrs. George Webb, Louisville; his father, W. F. Dunham, Chucky, Tennessee; two brothers, Herbert Dunham, Beaumont, Texas; and Henry Dunham, Chucky, Tennessee; and four sisters, Mrs. Allen Maclead, Mrs. Sam Shanks, and Mrs. Doyle Lawing, all of Chucky, Tennessee; and Mrs. Lewis Chambless, Philadelphia.
Funeral ervices were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Butler Funeral Home with burial in the Edmonton Cemetery."

Wow, I don't know that I would take very much from this obituary as correct. I mean, they even got the name of the deceased wrong in the title. Duncan/Dunham. Also have I ever told you all how much I really dislike obituaries with initials for the decedent? I mean why even bother with the obit if you are going to list them this way!

Anyway, the third newspaper article is in the bottom left corner. It reads:

"Overton Funeral Today - Hopkinsville, Ky., Dec. 1 - Frank Overton, 70, a retired State Highway Department employee, died Wednesday at Salubria Springs home for the aged near here. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Clint Hoppers; Princeton; two sons, Paul and Engene Overton, both of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Dulin and Mrs. Leonard Briggs, both of Crofton, and Mrs. Noble Sockett, Michigan, and two brothers, Fred Overton, Crafton, and Tom Overton, Madisonville. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Macedonia Baptist Church. The body is at Thomas Funeral Home, Crofton."

Ok, as I was transcribing this obituary, I was wondering what was the connection to my grandmother or the family. Then half way through I find it. The sister of the descedant, Bessie Dulin, is the mother to my grandmother's daughter-in-law. Huh? Ok, Bessie Dulin's daughter married the newspaper article clipper's son.

Anyway, on to the fourth newspaper article in the bottom right corner. It reads:

"Doctor's Widow Dies - Glasgow, Ky., Dec. 1 - Mrs. Sallie Pursley Edwards, 78, widow of Dr. Fidella Edwards, died Thursday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Dallas H. Smith, Tunstall, Va. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Clay Coleman, Sr., Paris, Ky. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Crow Funeral Home here."

Hope you enjoyed, glad you stopped by and please come back again ;)
I have been playing catch up all week long.

Anyway, here is the next installment of my grandmother/great-grandmother's memory book. When last we left my grandmother, in last week's posting found here, she was writing about what Zelma was doing. So this week we find out that....

"was born. Well do I remember helping mama carry Cornelia to see the new baby Zelma at the little house on the hill. Cousin Edna's 2nd daughter Doris is 38 yrs. old and 3rd daughter Eunice is 33 yrs old. 1954 Dr Henderson had a wreck June 21, 1954 & died July 8, 1954 - his wife VaLeria died May 21 1954

{On the left side of the page}
he was a wonderful Dr. his wife gave me a recitation "The Skeptic's Daughter" to memorize when I was 15 yrs old & I will never forget here.

{On the right side of the page}
Dr had 3 children 2 boys 1 girl Raymond Elane & Arvin Jr"

The obituary in the bottom right corner is for Thomas W Richardson, has July 18, 1961 written at the top and states the following:

"Thomas W Richardson, 38, Dies in Louisville Tuesday
Thomas Wayne Richardson, 38 year old resident of Pleasure Ridge Park, but formerly a Barren and Metcalfe County native, died suddenly Tuesday morning around 3 o'clock. He was a patient at Waverly Hills Sanitarium for nine years, but had been discharged for a year. A Navy veteran of World War II, he is survived by his wife, Marcelle Gillock Richardson; a daughter, Charlotte, 14, and a son, Carroll, 13, both at home; his parents, Rev. and Mrs. T. A. Richardson, Glasgow; five brothers, Sam, of Glasgow; James and Harry, Cave City; Hubert, Louisville, and George, of Brookhaven, Miss. The body will remain at the A. L. Heady Funeral Home on Taylor Blvd. where services will be conducted Thursday at 11:00 o'clock, with burial in the Louisville Memorial Gardens."

I believe Thomas Richardson was a friend of the family and that is the reason for the keeping of the clipping. I have heard my aunts and mother speak of Brother Richardson.

And lastly is the birthday announcement for my grandfather and husband of the writer of the memory book, Richard Slemmons Munday. It's had the year 1960 written in the top right corner. The article reads:

"R. S. Munday celebrated his birthday Sept. 20th at his home near Wisdom, and received several gifts. Also money and cards. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Faulkner, Rebecca, R. G. and Emily Jo, Louisville, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Munday, Susan and Martha, Edmonton, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Chelf, Magnolia. Mr. Munday is much improved after suffering a stroke about 6 weeks ago at Sunday School at Wisdom Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he has been an elder since August 1921. He wishes to thank the church, friends and neighbors for their kindness in deeds, visits, cards and phone calls during his illness, and for the prayers of Rev. Damon London, Rev. Thurman Scott and friends. Other recent visitors of the Mundays were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Munday of Joliet, Ill. Rev. and Mrs. J. W. Barton and William, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Jolly. Also their son, Mayor William Munday of Crofton, Ky. and Mrs. Gilbert Faulkner recently celebrated their birthdays together at the Munday home, others present besides their families being the Eugene Mundays, the Chelfs, Rev. and Mrs. Bruce Chelf, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Rogers and Judy, and James Earl Munday."

This article mentions some children of my grandparents, cousins and neighbors.

Hope you enjoyed, glad you stopped by and please come back again ;)

This story is written by my grandmother, Gussie O. DeSpain Munday. Let's see what she has to say:

"Oct 31, 1954 R.S. Joseph & I rode with Eugene and Regina to Rally at Shiloh had a nice time, nice dinner, good program Nine girls of Wisdom Church had a part of program. Wisdom received Banner. I saw Cousin Uless & Edna Marcum also their oldest daughter Zelma " Keltner who is 44 yrs old was born March 1910 and Cornelia D was almost 10 months old when Zelma was"

When Zelma was what??? AUUUGGH!

Ok, little secret....we'll find out what Zelma was next week. Granny finished writing the rest of the story on the next page. Boy Paul Harvey has nothing on her. HA!

Now for an explanation of the characters of this part of the story:

R.S. is Richard Slemmons Munday - the husband of the writer

Joseph is Joseph Munday - son of R. S. and the writer

Eugene is Eugene Munday - son of R. S. and the writer

Regina is Regina Munday - wife of Eugene and daughter in law of R. S. & the writer

Cousin Uless is Ulysses Marcum - husband of Edna Henderson and cousin of the writer

Cornelia D is Cornelia DeSpain - sister of the writer

Stay tuned and we'll find out about what Zelma was up to next week!

Thanks for waiting.

Today's page has a lot of writing that my grandmother, Gussie O DeSpain Munday, did about a lot of different topics. Here we go:

"rained all day Oct 17, 1948. Margaret, Mary, William, Eugene, Zora, Joseph and mother went to see Charlie T DeSpain at Greensburg who was ill with Broncial Pneumonia and came back that day. A beautiful sunset that afternoon and a big frost that night. the first one this fall."

on the left side:

"a revival began Oct 17, 1948 at Dripping Spring with 4 professions closed Oct 27 on Wednesday night. Bro Jones & Richy."

below that on the left side:

"Cool and showers all day Oct 17 1955"
"Papa is here he came Oct 8 1955"
"No frost yet, the trees are still green. John Gilley drop dead Sat Oct 15, 1955"
"Curious light at night Nov 1957"

on the right side:

"Oct 31, 1948 it rained all day"
"Oct 24 19?? George Stephen had a wreck with Morris Shirley on the Glasgow road."

My thoughts about what was written:

It seemed to rain a lot in October back then.

Margaret, Mary, William, Eugene, Zora and Joseph are the children of my grandparents, Gussie DeSpain and Richard Munday.

Charlie T DeSpain is Gussie's brother and he lived in Greensburg, Kentucky.

I'm glad to know that they seem as concerned about the weather as people do today.

"Papa" is the nickname that the family called Gussie's father, Benjamin Lewis DeSpain.

I'm sad to hear about John Gilley. Didn't know him but always a shock when some one "drops dead."

Lastly, wonder who was at fault for the accident? George Stephen or Morris Shirley. Hope no one was hurt.

Until next week!

Hope you enjoyed, glad you stopped by and please come back again ;)
Here we go with this week's issue of my grandmother & great grandmother's memory book. Today are two obituaries that someone, probably my grandmother, cut out of the newspaper and put in the memory book between pages 14 & 15.

First one reads:

"Greer Child Succumbs
Mr and Mrs Paul Greer, of
Hardyville, have the sympathy
of friends and relatives in the
death of their five year old daugh-
ter, Kathy Gale Greer, who suc-
cumbed last Thursday night at
the home of her grandparents Mr
and Mrs. W. J. Phillips, 210 Cedar
street, after an illness of six
months.
Also surviving are a sister
Paula Fae Greer, at home; and
paternal grandparents, Mr and
Mrs Clyde Greer, Knob Lick.
Funeral services and interment
were conducted Saturday after-
noon at Big Meadow cemetery
under direction of Crow Funeral
Home."

Second one reads:

"Clyde Dillon, 53, was instantly
killed about 5:00 a.m. Thursday
when his car was struck by a pipe
line truck at the Y on Greensburg
road. The heavy fog is thought to
have been the cause of the tragedy.
Lewis Brown who was in the care
with him suffered a broken arm
and collar bone. Mr Dillon was a
son of the late Mr and Mrs John
Dillon, and was at present employed
at Edmonton Farm Center. He is
survived by is wife, Mrs Selma
Dillon 3 sisters, Mrs. Maxie Oakes
Knob Lick, Miss Anna Mae Dillon,
Mrs Leola Gollar, Louisville, one
brother, Lester, Sulphur Well, one
aunt, Mrs. Frank Price, Knob Lick
two uncles, Arthur Thompson, Knob
Lick, Polk Dillon, Louisville, one
half uncle, Jim Dillon, Hiseville
two half sisters Misses Bertie and
Mamie Dillon, Denver, Colo. 1 half
brother, Lee, Winlock, Wash. Fun-
eral services will be conducted by
Rev. J. W. Barton at Butler Funeral
Home Saturday afternoon at 2:00
with burial in Edmonton cemetery.
The entire community is shocked
and grieved and join in deepest
sympathy for the sorrowing family."

According to the Kentucky Death Index 1911-2000, Kathy Greer died in Barren County Kentucky on 11 Jul 1957 and Clyde Dillon died on 18 Jul 1957 in Metcalfe County, Kentucky.

I wonder if that is why my grandmother had them together in between the same pages of the book?

Can't say that I've seen too many obituaries that list 1/2 uncles.

Hope you enjoyed, glad you stopped by and please come back again ;)

This week's installment of my great grandmother & grandmother's memory book is interesting. Here it is:

"Aunt Lou Wilson died February 13, 1936 She is my mother's oldest sister Sallie May Buckners mother. Aunt Lerie Foster Woolridge died 1952 Sept 30"

Interesting because I am getting better at telling which woman wrote which entry by recognizing their handwriting. This entry was written by my grandmother, Gussie O. (DeSpain) Munday, about the oldest sister of her mother, Alice Josephine (Foster) DeSpain. Aunt Lou Wilson was born Lou Alvery Foster and married Joseph Reed Wilson. Lou as she was known by was born Oct 5 1866, to Josiah Foster and Sarah Frances Fulks. Oh, yeah by the way they were 1st cousins!

Aunt Lerie Foster Woolridge was a sister to Lou and Alice Foster. She was born Jun 1 1872, married 1st George Green Walker and 2nd to Frank Woolridge. A transcribed copy of her obituary can be found here.
All I know about the article is that the page is notated as having come from the April 18, 1895 issue of the "The Butler County News" newspaper.

Here is the transcription:

"bor's to find her home filled with this
jolly band. Refreshments were fur-
nished by the circle, which were deli-
and abundant. In both instances
a few tokens of respect and friendship
were given.
  The company of children, consisting
of thirteen boys and two girls, accom-
panied by Mr. E. Trott and Miss C.
Brill of New York, arrived Thursday
noon. About forty applications were
made. The following are the names of
the children and our townsmen who
adopted them:
Ernest Hudson, age 13, Sam McRob-
Mr Trott informs us that owing to
the disappointment of so many who
wished to adopt children, he will be
back here with another company in six
weeks, or about May 23. The services
of the same committee have been secur-
ed, and all applications are requested
to be handed in at once."

Doing a little digging I found out that this newspaper was located in Iowa. I also tried finding some of these children and adults in the 1900 Iowa Federal Census and couldn't find any of them. I also looked in the 1895 & 1896 Iowa State Census and again couldn't find any of them. I wonder where they all went?

Lastly, I do not have any connection to any of these children or adults, but I thought this information may help someone looking for more information on an orphan train passenger.

{update}
Found one of the boys listed above! It's Howard Crisman living with Henry Murphy. He has taken the Murphy last name, at least that's how they told the Census taker, and they are living in 1900 in Coldwater, Butler County, Iowa:

Henry F Murphy, age 44
Ella M Murphy, age 37
Blanche M Murphy, age 15
Margaret A Murphy, age 12
Ella Murphy, age 9
Howard Murphy, age 11

When you look at the actual census image it has Howard's place of birth as New York. Awesome!

{update #2}
Okay, found another one of the boys. Coincidentally, this one and Howard, listed above, are biological brothers. Here he in the Ancestry.com database living with a "sister" in Coldwater, Butler Co., Iowa in 1900.

{update #3}
Wow, found another one of the boys. This one is George Parkinson, living with Richard & Maggie Miner in Green Town, Butler County, Iowa in 1900. This image is from FamilySearch.org, but the actual image can be found https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11781-163479-52?cc=1325221:

Richard had a write up in the "History of Butler County, Iowa - Volume II" by Irving H Hart published in 1914. Unfortunately, he doesn't "claim" George among his children in this book. I found it on archive.org and it can be seen here: http://www.archive.org/stream/historyofbutlerc02hart#page/58/mode/2up

{update #4}
Great, found another one. This young man is the older brother to George listed above. Interestingly, he is listed under his biological last name, Parkinson/Parkerson. Again this image is from FamilySearch.org:

Through out this memory book my great-grandmother and grandmother not only wrote about the death of friends, neighbors and relatives they also cut out newspaper clippings about various happenings. Today's postings shows an obituary that was between two pages of the memory book.

The obituary from an unknown paper reads exactly:
"Young Woman Passes
  The commuity was o'ershadow.
ed with sorrow Thursday morning
to learn of the death of Annie Mary
Glass, age 22. Annie Mary died at
the community hospital Thursday
evening at 7 o'clock. She had
been suffering for several weeks
from brain Hemorages and for the
past week had been in the hospital
but her condition was critical and
little could be done for her.
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Clarence Shockley, and love-
ly young woman. She leaves sur-
viving. her husband Mr. Lonnie
Glass and 2 small sons John Wil-
liammage 5 years and Marshall age
3 years, her mother and father and
one brother Roy Shockley all of
afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial was
in cemetery at that place, midst a
large and sorrowing crowd of rel-
atives and friends."

According to the Kentucky Death Records 1852-1953 found on Ancestry.com Annie Glass died on 15 Oct 1936 at T. J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow, Barren County, Kentucky. She was born on 23 Sept 1914 to Clarence Shockley and Versie Shirley. She was buried in Pleasant Hill Kentucky.
Clay Robert Died Aug 17th 1928"

Again, I searched Kentucky Death Records 1852-1953 on Ancestry.com and found the following information on the people listed above:

I wasn't able to find Dr Owens, Mrs Owensby, Mrs Whitlow.

Mrs W. M Smith is actually Harriet Ann Smith, daughter of Thomas Biggs Hunley and Julie Emma Reynolds. Interesting that she died on Leap Day.

Aneliza Nickles is listed as Annie E Nichols. She was the daughter of Edward W Eubanks and Margaret Crawford and she died in Wisdom, Metcalfe County, Kentucky.

Mrs Dave Eubank is Catherine Annie Walker Eubank and according to the death certificate she died on 23 Oct 1924.

Mr Watson is actually Robert Newton Watson and died in Wisdom, Metcalfe County, Kentucky.

Mrs Cafie Nickles is Captolia Nichols and according to the death certificate is the daughter of Unnamed Moran and Unnamed Vilazant.

OK, so here is the next page from the memory book that I started posting last week, found here.

"Loela Pedigo died May 25, 1930

Mrs Henry Yates died March 26 1931

Amme Mrs Jim Yates Apr 8 1931

Evert Ball died Apr 26, 1931

Merree Miller died Oct 11 1931

Nettie B Depp died

Aug 4 1932

John Sowers died in 31

Mr Dave Eubank died April 9th 1934

Mrs Emma C Munday died May 2 1936

Nettie Nance died Oct 1936

Mr Willie Bagby Nov 14 1935

Mr J T Ball Nov 5 1935

Mrs Birch Whitlow died Dec 30 1928

Mrs Willie Bagby died Nov 1936

Mrs Oren Pulliam died June 1 1930

Mr Will Nichols died

Mr Lewis Glass died Oct"

I realized as I was transcribing the above page that the top half of the page was written by my great-grandmother, Emma/Emily C (Slemmons) Munday, and the lower half, beginning with "Mrs Emma C Munday" was written by my grandmother, Gussie O (DeSpain) Munday.

"What makes you think that, Deb?" Aside from the fact that Emma/Emily would not have written about her own death (duh!), I have several examples of things that I know my grandmother wrote that allows me to recognize her handwriting.

I searched Kentucky Death Records 1852-1953 on Ancestry.com and found the following information on the people listed above:

Loela Pedigo was indexed as Fela Mays Pedigo. But I'm pretty sure that it is the same person because she died in Glasgow, Barren County, Kentucky and that is about 3 miles from Wisdom in Metcalfe County.

Even though the index has the death date as 20 Mar 1931, Mrs Henry Yates listed above was Camila Ann Yates.

Merre Miller was only 19 years old and is listed as, what appears to be, Martha Marine Miller on her death certificate.

While she has John Sowers without a death date and only the year '31. Unfortunately, it's the wrong year, John died on Jan 12 1932.

J T Ball is listed as J T Ball on his death certificate with his parents listed as J W Ball (keeping the initials going it seems) and Mary T Franklin. My great-grandmother's mother was Martha Susan Franklin and sister to Mary T Franklin's father, Roger Thompson Franklin. confused yet? I think I am!

Mrs Birch Whitlow is really Irmine Whitlow and her husband is listed as L B Whitlow.

I wasn't able to find Mrs Willie Bagby.

Mrs Oren Pulliam is actually Vera Alma Pulliam, just 21 years old and her parents were Frank Pitcock and what looks to be Bufie Freeman.

I wasn't able to find Will Nichols.

Mr Lewis Glass died 5 Oct 1943 and was the husband of Dora C Glass.

Hope you enjoyed, glad you stopped by and please come back again ;)
I'm starting back up with another Treasure Chest Thursday series.

This is a book that my maternal aunt has allowed me to scan. I used the Flip-Pal scanner that I received for Christmas from my husband to scan this book turned journal in which her grandmother and my great-grandmother, Emily Calhoun (Slemmons) Munday, kept notes. She died in 1936 in Metcalfe County, Kentucky. The material that is in here after that would have been added by my grandmother and her daughter-in-law, Gussie Otto (DeSpain) Munday.

The book she used was titled, "Memorial Addressed on the Life and Character of Richard W Townshend Feb 15, 1890." If you want to see what the book looks like in its original state you can find scanned copy of the whole book on Archives.org at http://www.archive.org/details/memorialaddresse02unity

John Pulliam died Oct 30, 1955

Matt Lige Milby died Dec 1956

Wesley Y Milby died Dec 6, 1956

Cousin Josie Scott died Dec 7, 1956

She was a sister to Elsie's mother a 1st cousin to my Grandma DeSpain"

Hate to hear that Effie and Merrew had a falling out...don't know them but hope they got back together. :)

The parts after the math equations were written by my grandmother, Gussie O. Despain Munday.

Matt Lige Milby is found in the Kentucky Death Index 1911-2000 on Ancestry.com to be Mattie Milby who died in Green County, Kentucky on 3 Dec 1956.

According to the same index, Wesley Y Milby died on 4 Dec 1956 in Green County, Kentucky.

Again, in that same index Josie Scott is listed as Josephine Scott and also died in Green County, Kentucky.

The Grandma DeSpain that she mentions would have been, Eliza Ann (Scott) DeSpain.

Your opinion matters!

In 4 days this blog will be 2 years old and I am thinking, seriously thinking, about making a major change. While I haven't been blogging a lot lately, I am constantly thinking about new postings. Some of the reasons, but not all, that I do not get them done is the fact of having to create them in Blogger. I use Blogger in draft, but I have never really like the interfacing that Blogger has.

Recently, I exported all of my postings from Blogger into a WordPress account that I had created. Initially, my intention was to keep this new account private, so that it wouldn't get confused with this one and just for backing this one up. The "just in case" scenario, so that I would have this blog backed up, somewhere.

However, now that I have played with the WordPress interface, I like it. Just a few of the things that I have found really cool in WordPress: You can preview a new theme and it will actually show you what your blog would look with this new theme in place. I like the fact that it has not only a spell checker, but a grammar checker and style rules. Because, I know better then anybody how much help my writing needs! ;)

But there are several reasons why I don't want to stop using Blogger.

1st - because of all of you, my followers. I really don't want to lose any of you. I know with a move some followers will be lost, that's a normal thing.

2nd - I would have to update everything and everybody. Facebook, Geneabloggers, Google+, LinkedIn, etc, etc.

3rd - It seems to me that I am abandoning something that I started with for the new toy. Plus I really like all of the other Google products that I use on a daily basis. Why should I drop this one?

4th - The subscribing to a WordPress blog seems to have more steps involved. It could just be me thinking or not remembering what it took to subscribe to a Blogger blog in the beginning.

So, what is my real question here?
What do you all think?
Should I move the blog?
Is it easier to subscribe or follow one or the other?

Please let me know what you guys think. I know if I decide to do it, I won't do it overnight it will probably take me a while to work up the nerve or have the wild hair that finally gives me the courage to do it. But I really would like to know what have been your experiences or thoughts on this.

Have you? If you haven't why not? As of this posting there are only 1095 signers. Unfortunately, we need to get 25,000 by March 8th, 2012. You might be asking, Why should you sign this petition?

{climbing up on her soapbox}

I'm not going to pretend that I understand everything about the situation, but what I do understand is this: Some bad people, we'll call them criminals, decided to use a dead person's social security number on their tax return, so that they can claim more dependents on their tax form then they are entitled to. Rather than the government making the IRS use a computer program that would red-flag this tax return as, "Hey, this Social Security number is for a dead person!", they want to throw the baby out with the bathwater and shut down the online index......Brilliant! I mean they make apps for everything, why haven't they made an app for this? Can't someone's 14 year old grandchild come up with the coding to do this?

If we, as concerned citizens and genealogist, don't voice our opinions on this petition, we will sit by as the Government shuts down a perfectly good system rather than fixing the real problem of not making the IRS do its job....the correct way.

{climbing down from her soapbox}

You can find out more about the situation by going to RPAC's website located at http://www.fgs.org/rpac/

How do you sign the petition? Go to the Petition's page on the White House website at http://wh.gov/khE
You will need to create a user in order to sign the petition, which is probably whey there are so few people who have signed so far.

Please take the time to sign this petition and get all of your family members, neighbors, clients, business associates and everyone else you stop on the street to sign it too!

I use Picasa photo program to allow me to keep my pictures in some sense of order. The program has a really cool feature of face recognition, that I have played with a couple of times. It will show you the faces of people in your pictures and you can tag them with their names. Thus grouping pictures of identical people together for you.

Here is what part of the page looks like when it has gathered the "like" pictures together:

You'll see down on the bottom row it has four pictures with orange triangles that have a question mark in a circle. A close up of these four pictures are here:

I was going to click the red x button underneath the two pictures on the left, this tells the computer that they are not the same person. I believed this to be true, because, when I took the pictures of this picture my aunt told me that this was someone that lived near her grandmother, Emily Calhoun Slemmons Munday, and didn't mention that it was Emily's father, Asher.

In case you couldn't tell, the two on the left are really the same picture, as are the two pictures on the right. That being said the "one" picture on the left is in a frame that has a piece of paper that has this written on it:

"W. H. Depp and Jennie Anderson will married [sic] one month from today"

So I, and my aunt, had assumed that the paper was telling about the person in the picture...W. H. Depp.

However, now with the face recognition software showing me the two pictures side by side, I'm not so sure.

In the close-ups, shown above, you can really see the similarities:

the shape of the heads

the shape of the mouth - curled up on one side

the way the hair sticks out on the sides - I bet he wore a hat a lot.

the length of the nose

the shape of the nose

What do you think, are these these two pictures of the same man?

The one on the left is a known picture of Asher Slemmons, my 4th great-grandfather. The one on the right is the suspect Asher.
