Jay Maisel says "Light, gesture and color are key components to any photograph. Light and color are obvious, but it is gesture that is the most important." There is gesture in everything. The goal is to find the gesture that is most telling. Photographs happen at speed of life. Frequently I find images happen burst of three. So I am always prepared for that eventuality.
This image was captured during my recent Palm Beach Photographic
Workshop trip to Cuba. This image was captured at 200iso with a 28-300mm VR II lens on a 128 GB Lexar SD card. The File
was the Nikon Electronic Image File format (.NEF). The image was post
processed with Capture NX2 and Photoshop CS6 using Google's Nik
collection software's Color efex Pro 3.0 and Viviza plug-ins.
This image was captured during my Palm Beach Photographic
Workshop to
Burma. It was a two hour boat ride on Inle lake to get to the village
where this images were captured. There are few things in life as moving
and as breathtaking as on the lake. It is as if you have pushed the
pause button on time. When we arrived there was no one about the
village. Right as we started to walk down the main road the was a
cacophony of laughter and giggles, the school had just let out for
recess. There were children everywhere in the school yard. I could not
fire my shutter fast enough.

The image was captured by a Nikon D-800, camera modified for infrared.
Super Enhanced color conversion done by LifePixel with a 24-120 mm Nano
coated VR II lens at 400iso using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) Shot
on Lexar 32 gigabyte 1000 speed UDMA Flash media. file was post
processed using capture NX 2.0 software, Nik Color Efex 4.0 and Silver
Efex Pro 2.0.

D70 Yosemite Panorama

The only thing I hate more than being
cold is being really really cold. This ism is the image where I learned,
besides that the only thin I like cold is beer and ice cream (I really
don't like beer), is when you are shooting in really really really cold
environments be sure to bring a cooler, keep it in the trunk and put
your camera bag in the cooler, and ALWAYS put your cameras and lenses in
the cooler as long as you are shooting. The reason for this is if the
inside of the car is toastie warm and the outside of the car is so cold
that you become a photog-a-cicle. When you get inside the car you may be
frosting but the camera gear is fogging because of condensation. It
took me an hour and a half at the Awanee Lodge for my lenses to de-fog.
Rough life...

Another important lesson was at the time I shot
this I did not know how to assemble it. I am in the process of
organizing the severs at my studio and I cam across this image in parts
and pieces. SO don't trow something away now because your technique is
not up to the task today. Tomorrow is always another day and as
photographers we do get better with age.

The image was captured
by a Nikon D-70 camera with a 70-210f4 mm D series lens using the
Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) Shot on Lexar 8 gigabyte
Flash
media. file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software, Nik Color
Efex 4.0 and Silver Efex Pro 2.0. File was hand stitched in Photoshop

This image was captured on my way back to Mandalay from spending time in the Himalayan region of Burma. We drove on roads so bad calling them bad roads would be to give bad roads a bad name. The pot holes were so deep that at times I thought Columbus was wrong and the world is indeed truly flat It was a fourteen hour ride to travel 300 miles.
This image was captured on my American Photo Assignment to Burma. We were waiting to take a ferry across the river from Yangon to "parts unknown....." This young boy was waiting too. I tried to wake him when the ferry arrived he was to tired even look up. The most important thing to remember when shooting in both India and Burma is"watch where you step."
Burma. It was a two hour boat ride on Inle lake to get to the village where these images were captured. There are few things in life as moving and as breathtaking as on the lake. It is as if you have pushed the pause button on time. When we arrived there was no one about the village. Right as we started to walk down the main road the was a cacophony of laughter and giggles, the school had just let out for recess. There were children everywhere in the school yard. I could not fire my shutter fast enough.

I had one of the best times (again) at Pictureline in Salt Lake City! I have to say that the the photo community there is vibrant and strong as well as being very supportive of each other. These are some images shot by one of the attendees, Tom Szalay of the event.

One of them is the 88 Generations leader Min Ko Naing. He and Ko Ko Gyi are as responsible for the democratic reforms in Burma (Myanmar) as is Aung San Suu Kyi. What I have experienced in photographing Min Ko Naing is that he does not seek political power, but what what is "right" for his fellow countrymen. He said to me that he wants to stay an artist (he paints) because artists always tell the truth. This man, like Ko Ko Gyi spent 21 years in prison for his convictions. Most of that time in solitary confinement. When asked about how feels, just like Aung San Suu Kyi and Ko Ko Gyi, he says he forgives his captors and wants to move forward and make his country a better place. I find myself thinking about their ability to do that. I have been wronged in my life, as we all have, but I doubt none of us to the level as they have. The fact that they can forgive such heinous acts... Something to aspire to.

Photographing him is literally like trying to shoot a moving target. He is so passionate about everything that he never stops moving. He is so focused on the goal of doing right by his fellow countrymen that there is no time to sit him down and photograph him. This is the second time I have shot him. What I learned was put the camera at the highest iso it can deliver with no noise, use a D4 and put the camera in frame waster mode and pray to the photography gods for a good day.
I
shot this image just before sunrise in Mandalay at a morning market, right after the previous image of the woman. The reason his teeth are discolored is because of of the extreme consumption of Beetle nut. The extreme consumption of Beetle nut also is the cause of the for the happy face at 5:30am.... Gives a new meaning to the concept of "wake and bake."
I shot this image just before sunrise in Mandalay at a morning market. This is one of those images where I thought it was going to be a black and white when I shot it, but I like the color. THe point is when you decide to make a black and white, you first have to make the best color image you can before you convert the image to black and white. If it does not look good in color it certainly will not look any better in black and white.
On January 7th I had to purchase a new laptop. The reason? The size of D800 files. To process one from start to finish it felt like I was passing a birthday every time I worked on one. Soooo I decided that it was time to suck it up and buy a new machine. The machine I decided on was the non Retina display 15 inch 2.7 Macbook pro with a 1TB hard drive. The reason? Glossy screens in the field do not work for me and a hard wired hard drive that I cannot replace should I need to (I have yet to own a laptop where I have not needed to) is not a prudent choice for someone who works his laptop as hard as I do. I get that this is the future, but for now I can still delay the inevitable. Also it has an Ethernet port, Firewire 800 USB 3 and Thunderbolt. SO everything I own today works.

This time I decided to suck it up and instead of doing the transfer of software from old to new, I would do a complete clean install of ALL of the software. Which is, on the very best day and by anyone's measure, not my idea of a good time. To compound this joyous experience I was leaving for Burma (Myanmar) first thing in the morning January 8th. So January 7th I had every computer I own download all of the software that I needed from the internet. The plan install on the airplane all software.

One of the things that happens is laptops, if you travel a lot and live on your laptop, become like the closet of a college student the night before the parents come to visit him the dorm; filled with EVERYTHING you have ever owned. The other thing is you take that for granted. You just accept that everything you need is just there 'cuz..well.. it's just there. I replace my laptop every three years and the one I was replacing was going on four years, so yeah it was time.

Well I did not think to actually BRING the old laptop....

So when I went to install all the software I did not have the any of the serial numbers. Because the folder that is in my Documents folder "ALL_SERIAL_NUMBERS" was not on my new laptop it was on my old laptop. Did I mention I was going to Burma? And did I mention where I was going in Burma was the Himalayas to photograph remote mountain tribes? To say the internet is slow in Burma would be to give slow internet a bad name, and to think that there would be internet access in the huts of remote mountain tribes in the Himalayas? So I was left as an option "demo mode" for all of my software.

Which worked! I had to click "demo" everytime I lauched anything, but I caused this issue so I had only me to blame (I hate that when that happens... yelling at yourself is only fun for those watching).
So yesterday I was in Florida ( I live in Los Angeles, I flew straight to Miami from Yangon Burma, or 31 hours, to teach). Well the demos timed out. Most importantly the demo for my beloved Niksoftware Color Efex Pro 4 timed out... It was not until that moment that I realized just how important and how much of my imaging relies of that technology. In the simplest of terms I cannot creat the images that I create without it. I was stopped cold. Did I know how to kinda work around it in Photoshop? Yeah I guess but why? I cannot achieve the quality of image enhancement. Not to sound like a commercial but if anyone form Niksoftware is listening thank you. Thank you for every image I have created in the past 13 years.

I shot this image after having traveled on the worst road ever on the entire planet. T say this was a terrible road was to give bad roads a bad name. We were on this road for 8 and a half hours. We were on our way to the Chin state located in the Himalaya mountain range.
