Bat For Lashes

I haven't done one of my music icon posts for a while, but I've loads of inspiration of late so I'll get back into it. Quick mention of Sparkadia who rocked my socks off at the Fishos last night (about the fifth time I've seen them but always awesome). One day I'll do a post on Tiffany, anyone who makes the harpsichord look hot deserves a post.

And along similar lines, of harpsichords and hot girls in bands, I've been loving the music and style of Natasha Khan of Bat For Lashes for a while now. I'm pretty sure she was the one who made headpieces the must have item of the season.

Also she has a quote from Thom Yorke on their myspace, singing her praises = much respect. I think if Thom Yorke knew who I was I would know I'd made it.

Bat For Lashes are from Brighton in the UK, and if you check out their website you'll see that Natasha is also an amazing artist, and does most of their cover art. Yep, some people get all the talent.

Well it's raining today- so it's not really the kind of day to be thinking about swimwear. And yet I find myself trawling through the catalogues of some of my fave swimwear brands. As usual, Zimmerman have some gorgeous (albeit skimpy) pieces on offer, with a beautiful collection of fabrics- lots of tie dye and bright colours.

I'm really captivated by all the great old-fashioned one-piece styles hitting the stores this season. I don't usually consider Jets as one of my favourite swimwear brands for my age group (mid-twenties- ahhh I've moved on from early twenties!!), however some of their one-pieces this season are gorgeous!!

I wanted to post some photos of what we all ended up wearing to the races- but woops, I didn't take my camera. So I'm just going to steal some of my buddies and hope she doesn't mind if I post them on here (I'm pretty sure she's the only one that actually reads this blog so should be fine).

I ended up getting a Cooper St dress, fairly plain but just loved the colour. Don't have any full length pictures here so will have to nag some other friends for those. All my friends looked so beautiful- sometimes I love being a girl :)

I picked my fave dress from those below and did an outfit. The dress itself is fairly plain for the races, but I think with an up-do, heels and feather fascinator it would be races appropriate. I have so many ideas for different outfits so I'll have to do some more posts. I'm loving yellow too- and I'm also thinking an outfit for the more alternative me- with a black top-hat and gloves. These will have to come later- I've already wasted enough time today.

Sigh... Back to work.

Spring Racing Tips and Tricks

Well ladies, it is fast approaching that time of year when we don our finest outfits, make our way to Randwick and ready ourselves for a day of ogling boys in suits, throwing money down on the horse with the coolest name and laughing at the girls who can't walk in heels, keep losing their hats or commit some other sort of fashion crime.

I've been trawling through the Vogue forums compiling in my head all the do's and don't's of spring racing- so for your convenience, and mine, I thought I'd jot them down here (not necessarily my own opinions).

Hats:

- No felt- this is for Autumn
- Wide brims look great, but only wear them if necessary, as they can make for an awkward greeting :)

Hair:
- fascinators=very good
- go for an up do

Appropriate attire:
- No shorts, no denim, skirts should not be much higher than above the knee, nothing too revealing
- Not night wear- e.g. beware of too many sequins/jewels

Shoes:
- no stilettos- they'll sink into the ground
- wedges or thick heeled heels are best
- strappy is best for spring (this is one rule I think I'll be breaking- I want to wear my Mary Janes!)

What will be in this season? I'm predicting lots of jewel toned dresses- electric blues, fuschias, emerald greens etc and also metallics. Also still loving the embroided boho look. Here are some of my picks:

I got in trouble on Friday night. From my best friend. Apparently she reads my blog when she's bored of doing uni work. And as I haven't posted since August 29- well I was in trouble. So I'm back again, with so much inspiration this week- since the sun is shining and I've already made three trips to the beach- and it's only September! Sydney is just heaven at the moment.

Anyway, I found this post that I wrote ages ago and never posted!!

I love those four little words- "You've won this item". Here are a couple of recent ebay purchases.

I'm still trying to decide if the docs make my legs look chunky, but mostly I don't really care. I wore them to oxford arts last week with a black leather skirt and black bonds T and felt right at home. The dress is one of those staple throw-on-when-I-can't-be-bothered-thinking-about-an-outfit dresses. So naturally it's getting a lot of wear- looks so hot with tights and boots and more casually with jeans and flats. I adore the cherry red so much I went and bought another dress in the same colour the other day!

I've been heading back to the gym lately- and hence my fashion inspiration of late has been casual and cool. I'm really loving Feist- definitely an up-and-coming on the music style icon list. She always looks as though she's just thrown on the first thing she sees- and yet carries it off with pure class. This is the look I've always admired the most and never been able to achieve. Can someone tell me how to do it?

Not really. I'm just super busy. Which means business is great! But my poor blog is being neglected. But it's Friday- and I feel like getting inspired all over again. I've done a lot of vinnies/salvos shops lately so might have to do my first ever photo shoot this weekend. I need something to get me out of this house....

Here's a polyvore creation I made a while ago. I called it back to school- cos it's what I'd be wearing if I were going back to uni this semester. But I'm all graduated and done... and sorely missing the coffee cart and hours of doing nothing on the library lawn (wait, there's a library over there? no way!)

I'm not usually much of a Sportsgirl fan- simply for the fact that you see it on every second girl. However they've really gone for the 70s hippie inspired look of late with lots of florals, light-wash denim and crochet vests and I really could buy every single piece. I indulged with a scarf and some good everyday sunglasses (I always seem to go for fun novelty sunglasses, but sometimes a girl just needs one sensible pair). I managed to break my pair from Venice Beach while I was away. Sob.

How perfect are those shoes going to look with some knee hi socks?! I bought the most gorgeous gray socks from Portmans, they even have a little bow on them. Can't wait for an excuse to wear them. It's days like this I wish I had an office job...

Ok so I've been back for almost a week now, but I've had so much work to catch up on I haven't had time for any of my fun stuff, like blogging! How I miss reading everyone's posts! Sometimes I feel as though relaxing holidays just lead to more stress when you return and have double the amount of work to do.... Oh for a job that just stops when you beg it.

But, enough complaining. I am finally in front of my little blog again and ready to post some lovely things. Unfortunately my camera decided to die on me once again.Why do I have such bad luck with cameras? Tsk tsk. I managed a few shots of my friends and I and some of the bands at Splendour, but very few of fashion- boo! Well here are some of my favourites from the festival itself, I'll post some more over the next few days of fashion and beautiful Byron scenery. The lack of focus on my camera actually made for a few interesting photos...

I'm off to Splendour on Wednesday- can't wait! So excited for Laura Marling and Band of Horses and Cold War Kids and so so many more! I just won some Docs on ebay so I'm all excited about outfit options for the festival. So, since the weather has been so up and down of late- here are my options- rain or shine!

I've been tagged! Te from According to Te has tagged me to do the Tree of Happiness :) So here goes- Six things that make me HAPPY!!!

1. The Sun- I'm happy when it's sunny. And warm. Sometimes I think I'm cold blooded.

2. Country Music- don't judge. Wait- do. I don't care. I unashamedly adore country music, and it makes me smile. I love a whole range of music- and a lot of cool stuff, I promise. But if you ever saw me in the car- yes I'm that girl at the traffic lights singing her heart out and looking like a retard- it's probably Taylor Swift or The Dixie Chicks or Garth Brooks that I'm singing along too.

3. Food- often the toughest question of my day revolves around what to eat. One of the best things about living in Australia is the variety of food available in both supermarkets and all of the wonderful restaurants. I love eating out more than anything- give me Indian or Thai and I'm your best friend.

4. Baking- I love the smells. I love eating the mixture and licking the bowl clean. I love the anticipation.

5. Live music- I try to get to at least 1 gig a week. There's so much out there and we're so lucky to live in a country full of talented musicians. I love being part of the industry and watching talent grow.

6. Pretty clothes- Dresses. Anything floral. Lace. Cute leather shoes. Bows and ribbons. Pearls. Stockings and socks. Cardigans. Buttons and belts. Scarves and hats and gloves. Accessories.

I Love The Name Jenny

Jenny is feminine, pretty, pink, floaty, floral and gorgeous. Jenny Pink is my mum. And Jenny Lewis is my next Music Style Icon.

Vegas born Jenny Lewis was made for indie rock, with her pearly white skin and luscious brown locks. She's toured with Coldplay and The Postal Service and has worked with Elvis Costello and Conor Oberst. Her band, Rilo Kiley, is receiving great interest- they have a real Fleetwood Mac thing going on that I just adore. It just makes you smile.

She could also make a paper bag look good. She channels indie vintage in a way that a girl can only dream of.

Oh and she's acted in a whole run of cool indie films. She's one of those all round perfect girls. Sigh.

So I don't plan on getting much done this week. I've just discovered Polyvore. What brilliance! No more photoshop-ing and dealing with 50 layers and such annoying things. And what a great time waster. I'm in love.

So here's my first Polyvore creation- the focus was on creating an outfit around these shoes for Spandex Pony. My inspiration was my Nana- Jessie Pink- who never left the house without gloves and had a gorgeous yellow VW! Cute.

Anyone who can wear a dress that looks like a dead swan and be praised for it in fashion society deserves a mention in my chapter of music style icons. Bjork's music and style may not be for all, at times creative genius and others bordering insanity.

She pushes the boundaries, both in her vocal experimentation and her fashion. She is often quoted by stars such as Keira Knightley as a fashion influence, and when I google imaged her, I found an incredibly beautiful collection of images.

p.s. i want her hair.

Music Style Icons

I've finally thought of a way to combine my passion for fashion (hehe) with my other great love- music. Inspired by my recent post about Julia Stone and her all-together loveliness, I've decided to dedicate whole posts to women in music with great style. It was a tough call for me on who to start on- I'm channeling Debbie Harry at present, but Bjork is so outstandingly creative. It was a tough call, but for now, Debbie wins the race (stay tuned for some wonderful pics of Bjork).

Debbie's look has spanned generations- her tassled blonde hair, shadowy eyes and red lips are so right now. She made ray bans a must have and defines rock chick. Not to mention songs like Heart of Glass and Call Me that are still spun at retro nights and birthday parties galore.

Debbie Harry is my first Music Style Icon.

In response to Kate's very apt comment on my last Boutique of the Week, I feel the need to show off some of my favourite vinnies/salvos/lifeline/random cheap thrift store finds :)

So I've put some outfits together- everything in this shoot was around $5 or less. The chocolate brown bag in outfit two is my favourite, I wear it almost every day. Actually that whole outfit gets a lot of wear. Couldn't tell you specifically which stores I found each item in, but I hit up all of the above stores on the Northern Beaches very often so they're likely to have come from Mona Vale, Dee Why or Brookvale.

It's cute. It's sassy. It's chic. It's Boutique of the Week!

I've been going off on all sorts of tangents lately, forgetting that this is indeed a fashion blog, not simply a "Jessie will write whatever the damn hell she wants to write" blog. So, I digress. Here is my latest Boutique of the Week. I'd like to get a great collection of Sydney Boutiques on here. It would be great to have a directory going with photos of each store and a list of what they specialize in, price ranges, etc., so if you own a great store that hasn't been mentioned yet drop me an email and I'll come in for a visit :)

Drumroll...

Puf'n Stuff is another of the wonderful vintage stores on Crown St, Surry Hills. One visit to this store and I now know where every pair of granny shoes have disappeared to. They have a great collection of vintage shoes as you can see from the pics below, and also some wonderful clothes and bags. My friend bought a gorgeous leather jacket which he has since been wearing to death (and won't let me borrow, grr). Reasonably priced too for vintage resale, the jacket was $180. Here are some pics from the store :)

Julia Stone is cool.

If you get a chance to catch Angus and Julia Stone in concert don't pass it up. Their music is beautiful and creative. But even if you're not that into what they do, you'll find yourself captivated by the ethereal stage presence of Julia. Not only is she gorgeous in a dorothy-esque sort of way, she is a talented vocalist and instrumentalist and, to stay true to the fashion theme of this blog, she always wears the most gorgeous folky/hippie dresses.

With a guitar strapped over her shoulder, Julia will whisk up the trumpet for a quick solo. Next song she's combining keys with the harmonica, and why not throw in a little clarinet just for good measure. Angus himself is incredibly cute and also very talented at what he does, but even his boyish charm can't avert ones' eyes from Julia.

She makes this school band geek believe there's till hope that one day yet, I may be cool.

Boutique of the Week

Finally got around to doing my boutique of the week. Took these snaps weeks ago on a surry hills op shopping day. Was too poor to buy much but got a cute little blue beret at Zoo which I've been wearing to death. Hence my boutique of the week is Zoo Emporium on Crown St, Surry Hills. A note for all the Zoo friends- they're moving stores- but don't worry, it's just around the corner to Campbell St.
