How To Activate Your New iPhone 5 On AT&T

“How in the hell do I get service on this new iPhone?!!” This seems to be the question many customers are/were asking including myself. I ordered my iPhone 5 from AT&T and I am upgrading from an iPhone 3GS (yes I know). There were no clear instructions in the box on how to activate the phone and after trying on AT&T activation web site I had no luck. AT&T’s answer was to “plug it into iTunes”.

Some said to dial 611 from the iPhone 5 (which failed since there is no service), plugging your iPhone 5 in to your computer and iTunes (which did nothing). After looking through forums I finally found what worked for me after 2 days with no service. Follow the steps below. I promise you do not have to talk to a live person it’s all automated.

Follow These Steps to activate your new iPhone in 5-8 minutes:

1. Call 1-800-331-0500  ( 18003310500) – I used my home land line and you will press 1 a lot. Have your zip code and last 4 of your social security number handy. It asked me to okay an agreement …. blah blah… but then asked if the number I want to activate was my home number, you have an option to put in your cell number for your iPhone 5. Easy 2 minutes of your time.
2. You are told “The iPhone will be activate in 5 minutes” and you will be prompted to power the device off and back on after 5 minutes. If that does not work try a reboot (hold the sleep and home button together, ignore the “slide to power off” and wait until the screen goes black and you see an apple appear then let go of the buttons)
3. That should be it, you should have service. If not try turning off the phone for another 5-10 min and rebooting the phone again.

Hope this helped some but this may not help all. Just try power cycling and if nothing seems to work call for a live person at AT&T and they may have to check your iPhone plan and switch it to a 4G plan which should have happened when you ordered it. Each scenario may be different but so far this one seems to work best. Make sure you do try to at least plug the iPhone via USB/Lightning into your Mac/PC using the latest version of iTunes and follow the prompts.

Tips For Cleaning & Protecting Your PC

Here are some tips for spring cleaning your computer, getting free Anti-Virus software and finding /deleting viruses and malware. All of these links are 100% legit and all of the software (programs/apps) are used by me personally. This is mainly for Windows computers running Window OS (XP,Vista, 7). By the way, Windows XP computers are no longer supported buy Microsoft so there are no longer updates. I will try to use layman terms and not get too technical.

The links are all from download.com which is run by CNET (CBS Interactive). If you already have an Anti-Virus such as Norton there is no need to add the free ones listed below but I strongly encourage you to download and run the spyware and malware software.

Tip:

Mac/iMac owners: go to the top navigation bar on your home screen/desktop and in the very far left corner click the “apple logo” and scroll down to “software update” and make sure you update your software to help with the recent “flashback” virus. Always check the regularly.

Windows PC owners: depending on your Windows operating system you will need to find “windows update”. You can go to the start panel in the far bottom left corner and just type “windows update” in the search field/box or you may see an icon labeled “windows update’ or you may have already scheduled them regularly. It is highly recommended to check for updates monthly since windows are highly susceptible to viruses and such.

The Software

Now the fun part… free software!! (click each bold/highlighted software name/link to be directed to the download page of your choice). You can always uninstall any of these programs after you use them or keep using them regularly.

Malwarebytes Free Edition – This software is very important and everyone should install and run this. This is the best tool for getting rid of hard to find harmful viruses, worms, trojans…etc. Use the full scan and run it overnight since it takes a few hours to scan. If you see any red files it finds that means your computer has been infected. It will quarantine and delete the files. It will tell you how bad the virus is.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2012 – Received awards and is very good at protecting your pc.

Avast Free Anti-Virus – Another great free anti-virus for protection alternative to Norton.

SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition – This is another important one everyone should install and run. This will help with harmful viruses but the best part is this will get rid of Spyware. Spyware is just like the name says and spies on your computer searches..etc. If you search for “horses” you may notice spam email about horses or ads popping up with horses on them. This is from spyware and amazon or facebook have built in spyware.

CCleaner – This will clean out old junk files and get rid of unwanted clutter that may be slowing your computer down. There are a lot of useful tools in this software if you know how to use it. Stick to recommended settings. (This will clean passwords and cookies so make sure you know or have passwords and log-ins saved before you wipe your computer clean. If it asks to add a free toolbar just unclick that part and install without it.

Advanced SystemCare Free –  This software is like a swiss army knife with many great tools. Use Quick Care Run a full scan and delete unwanted clutter. Again make sure you know all your log-ins and passwords before running. Write them down on paper. The reason it is good to clean is because your browser and computer become cluttered with so many files/cookies and junk when you use the internet a lot and facebook ..etc.

WOT (Web of Trust) – This will alert you when a link or web site may be suspicious or known to have inappropriate content or bad stuff. Green circle means okay, yellow caution and red means not trusted. Easy.

Google Chrome – this is a great browser and more secure than Internet Explorer (IE) the big “e” icon for getting on the Internet and browsing. I highly recommend it. You can also use it on a Mac.

Browser Add-Ons or Extensions

For your Browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari…etc): there are things called “add-ons” or “extensions”. They have some very useful tools to add-on to your browser to make browsing more fun and secure. I would add links but they are different for every browser.

Two great add-ons or extensions I recommend are:

WOT (Web of Trust) –  This will alert you when a link or web site may be suspicious or known to have inappropriate content or bad stuff. Green circle means okay, yellow caution and red means not trusted.

AdBlock – this will prevent those crazy annoying Flash ads that seem to be popping up everywhere….Facebook ads, Google ads, pop-up ads.

So there you have some very basic details on some very good programs that everyone should have installed on your computer. If you run into any issues there are help files with each program and you can Google for more help. Good luck and hope this heps somebody.

Disk Cleanup – Use Disk Cleanup to delete files you no longer need and reclaim storage space on your computer

Disk Defragmenter – Fragmentation makes your hard disk do extra work that can slow down your computer. Disk Defragmenter rearranges fragmented data so your hard disk can work more efficiently. Disk Defragmenter runs on a schedule, but you can also defragment your hard disk manually.

Another great free program is Microsoft Security Essentials. Use Microsoft Security Essentials to guard against viruses, spyware, and other evil software. It provides real-time protection for your home or small business PCs.

iOS App of the Week

I downloaded the Slice app on my iPad a few days ago and so far I am very happy with the results. I had an eBay item that I forgot I bought that is still showing it is being shipped. I would have forgotten about it and if the item had never shown up at my door and would have never known.

This app will link to your email that you do your online shopping with and organize all your transactions into one organized place. This app has a simple, easy to read and use interface. The app does all the work for you by managing all of your online shopping from places like eBay, Amazon, Apple Store, iTunes and much more. No need to visit all of those web sites you bought from and check the order status and tracking info, just use Slice to see all your purchases in one convenient location. Very useful app and it is free!

Apple ID/ Getting Started

So you finally bought a new iPad and don’t know what apps to download. Many people are faced with this issue and have no clue where to start. If you are new to the iPad and looking for some great apps I can help. Below are some of my favorite apps mixed with some must haves and popular apps.

Before we get started you may also want to make sure you have an Apple ID set up and a credit card so you can purchase apps from the App Store even if they are free. You can start HERE setting up an Apple ID or use your iPad to do the same thing under <settings> then scroll down and click on <store> and create a new Apple ID and set up your credit card information. They ask for a credit card since this is what will be used to buy apps, music and anything from the App Store. For more help and information on setting up an Apple ID from your iPad click HERE.

You can visit the App Store on your iPad by clicking on the blue icon labeled ‘App Store’ . Once the App Store is opened you can use ‘featured’ to see wat is new and what is hot in apps. You can use the ‘top 25’ to see what others are downloading the most. You can click on ‘top paid’ or ‘top free’ apps depending on what you want to spend. The search feature will allow you to type in an app name such as “CNN” and it will show you all related apps to that specific name. Once you find the app you like tap on ‘free’ or the box with the cost and then tap ‘install’. Depending on your Wi-Fi or 3G speeds it may take a few minutes to download.

I highly recommend buying an Apple TV to go with your iPad. “Apple TV is a tiny entertainment powerhouse that plays the content you love from iTunes, Netflix, YouTube, and your favorite sports leagues on your widescreen TV. In up to 1080p HD. Just plug it in and discover a whole world of movies, TV shows, photos, music, and more. You’re gonna need a better couch”.

Below are some iPad apps I highly recommend. Most are free but some will cost you a little bit of cash but not too much. There are a ton of great apps in the App Store but these are just enough to get you started.

Facebook 

(Cost – Free)

This app was just updated for the retina display. It lacks some features and functions as Facebook on your computer. You will not see Timeline yet. One of the most popular apps and social media sites.

Twitter

(Cost – Free)

Although Twitter is integrated on iDevices, the iPad ships without the Twitter app already installed on it. Twitter is very popular social media site and very useful if you know how to use it correctly.

Pinterest

(Cost – Free)

Pinterest is gaining in popularity. I use it often. “Pinterest is a Virtual Pinboard. It lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find in your life. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes”.

Groupie

(Cost – Free)

Groupie is an iPhone app but you can 2x zoom it in and it still looks great. “Groupie is the easiest way to connect with people who share your interests and hobbies. Join and create groups, meet new people and stay in touch with friends”.

Infinity Blade II

(Cost – $6.99)

You can buy Infinity Blade part 1 which is only .99 cents for a limited time. Infinity Blade 2  just added high-resolution support for the New iPad. Both games are great and look amazing. This is a combat/ fighting game.

Swordigo

(Cost – $1.99)

Another great looking game that shows well on the retina display. This is a platform game where you “Run, jump and fight your way through a vast world to defeat the spreading corruption”.

Dark Meadow: The Pact

(Cost – Free)

Yet another beautiful game that shows off the retina display. You battle some creepy looking characters. “A dark fairytale of intrigue and mystery, where the sins of the past must be paid for… So sets the stage for The Dark Meadow — a visually stunning world of deep exploration, gripping story, and heart racing combat, created with the unrivaled power of the Unreal Engine 3”. The app is too new for me to give feedback.

Words With Friends

(Cost – $2.99/Free)

This is a very popular game that has been out for some time now. All Zynga games are usually very addictive. Play along with friends, strangers or facebook friends. This game is similar to Scrabble. There is an HD version or non HD version. This will cost you $2.99 or you can get the free app that is ad supported with annoying pop ups.

Scramble With Friends

(Cost – Free)

Another addictive Zynga game to play with friends, strangers or facebook freinds. This game is similar to the classic board game Boggle.

Draw Something

(Cost – Free)

Gaining in popularity daily and very fun to play. Zynga just bought out this game so it should get even better and have more words to chose from. “Play the Free version of Draw Something, the most popular social drawing and guessing game in the App Store with over 100 millions drawings created! Experience for yourself the laugh-out-loud game your friends are raving about”!

Pinball HD

(Cost – $1.99)

This game looks and feels great on the iPad and retina display. It also look great using an Apple TV to mirror the iPad. You can tilt the table to different angles. This is just what the name says, an HD pinball game.

Real Racing HD

(Cost – $4.99)

Another beautiful game on the retina display or using an Apple TV. “Real Racing HD offers the most realistic racing experience available on iPad. With all the content of the iPhone version plus enhanced features, graphics and gameplay to take full advantage of what iPad and iOS4.2 are capable of, this is hand-held racing like you’ve never seen before”.

You can’t go wrong with any of these apps below. They are all from Apple and packed full of features close to the original apps on you Mac. These are all paid apps. You may think $9.99 is too much but these apps are quality apps and are very useful for work, home and for playing.

(Cost – $4.99)

This is a must have if you love taking photos and editing them. Works great and looks nice with the retina display. “iPhoto is a universal app that runs on iPad 2 or later and iPhone 4 or later. Browse, edit, and share your photos from your iPad or iPhone, like never before – all the powerful tools you need are at your fingertips”.

iMovie

Calculator for iPad

(Cost – Free)

For some reason the iPad ships without a native Apple calculator app. This is the best free calculator app for your iPad. The only con is that it is ad supported so you will see ads.

Nightstand Central for iPad

(Cost – $2.99 / there is a free version)

Beautiful app that looks awesome on your new retina display. “With music alarms, a built-in sleep timer, weather info, customizable photo backgrounds, and even an included shake-on / shake-off flashlight, Nightstand Central turns your iPad into the ultimate bedside hub”.

Shazam

(Cost – Free)

An app that will allow you to tap the screen when you hear a song playing and it will identify that song in seconds. “Lightning fast tagging. Now discover, explore and share more music, TV shows and brands you love in as little as one second. With unlimited tagging use Shazam as much as you want, and experience more of what you like, faster. Download and experience the 9th most downloaded app of all time”.

Google Search

(Cost – Free)

My favorite part is using Voice Search, just tap on the mic and say what you are searching for and you get instant results and very accurate. No need to type if your hands hurt. “Search the web faster and easier with the latest Search app from Google. Get exclusive search features only available in this app for the best search experience. Completely redesigned for the iPad. Google Goggles: Snap a photo of what you see to find more information about products, landmarks or famous paintings, and even solve Sudoku puzzles. Search Nearby: Find places near you without typing your location”.

Google Translate

(Cost – Free)

This is a great app if you travel or just need a quick translation to or from another person. “Translate words and phrases between more than 60 languages using Google Translate for iOS. For most languages, you can speak your phrases and hear the corresponding translations”.

Hipmunk Flight & Hotel Search

(Cost – Free)

One of the best travel apps, it is very easy to use and great looking. “Hipmunk takes the agony out of flight & hotel search. With Hipmunk you’ll see all the relevant flights on a timeline, helping you visualize the right choice. Unlike every other app out there, Hipmunk doesn’t just show you the cheapest flight first — the app instead sorts by “agony,” which incorporates important factors like how long you’ll be traveling and how many stops you’ll make. Hotel results are shown on a map so that you can see exactly where you’ll be staying. You can also turn on heatmaps that will show you the best areas to stay based on unique interests like food, landmarks, nightlife and more”.

Evernote

(Cost – Free)

“Evernote is an easy-to-use, free app that helps you remember everything across all of the devices you use. Stay organized, save your ideas and improve productivity. Evernote lets you take notes, capture photos, create to-do lists, record voice reminders–and makes these notes completely searchable, whether you are at home, at work, or on the go”.

TiVo

Xfinity TV

(Cost – Free)

This app is usually buggy/glitchy but fun when it works. “Watch your favorite TV shows and movies on your iPhone®, iPad® and iPod Touch® – wherever you go. You can also control your TV, search TV Listings and On Demand, and schedule your DVR recordings directly from your device”.

NFL ’11 for iPad

(Cost – Free)

If you’re a huge football fan like me then this is one of the better apps. Keep track of your favorite team and all the latest NFL news. “NFL 2011 is the new official iPad app of the National Football League. Watch on-demand NFL Network news and info. Listen to live home & away radio broadcasts for every game with Audio Pass. Game highlights. Filter your favorite team’s news. Follow game action with our drive chart and stats. Tap on team logos to see rosters, team stats, and player info”.

The New iPad vs the iPad 2

“Is the new iPad worth spending $100 more for or should I buy the iPad 2 and save money?” I see this question frequently and I have been asked this questions a few times. My answer is YES, spend the extra $100. The new iPad and Retina display are truly amazing. If you are not into HD (Retina) and don’t care about photos or gaming then go with the iPad 2. But also remember when 4G LTE is in your area you will not be able to access it using the iPad 2. Also AT&T may be offering free hotspot using the new iPad and Verizon already does. Some people are already getting faster 3G/4G speeds that are faster than their Wi-Fi at home on the new iPad.

Once you take a photo using the new iPad you will see why the Retina display and better picture quality are worth it. The photos look crisper, clearer and more vibrant. The colors are better than the iPad 2 and videos look much improved. If you thought retina was awesome on your iPhone then wait until you see it on an iPad!

The heating issue is no big deal and mine never gets hot so far. The battery lasts as long as described. My smart cover made for an iPad 2 does not work on the new iPad see why HERE. Touch response, swipes and gestures are snappy and very responsive. It just feels fast and feels like a new device. I use my iPhone 3GS a lot and after using the iPhone for so long and then using my new iPad it is like using a dial-up Windows Vista PC and then getting broadband on a new Mac.

I won’t go into specs or details on cameras and pixels….etc but trust me it is a huge improvement over the iPad 2. I have 20/18 vision and I’m an HD junkie so anything HD I have to have. By the way I bought the new Apple TV also but the 1080p is not all that noticeable but it is still a must have if you own a newer  iPad or iPhone. The mirroring feature is great. Some games take advantage of the full screen on your HDTV and I’m sure more full screen games are coming. Plus I am sure there will be great software updates and more features to the Apple TV soon.

To sum it up…… The New iPad is a BUY!

Not so Smart Covers

You may see replica iPad  smart covers to buy on eBay or other web sites. Although they say “iPad 3 smart covers” in the headline and in the picture, many do not work with your new iPad. The auction on eBay I won claimed the “iPad 3 smart cover will allow my new iPad to sleep and wake up” as normal with smart covers for the iPad 1 and 2. That did not happen. They are cheap compared to Apple’s own original smart covers so you may think it’s a deal but save your money until you find out more information.

There are smart covers that do work and many more will be coming soon once the polarity change is fixed. This is a known issue with many iPad cases also. Wait for the updated cases. I saw on Amazon where a few iPad cases specifically said they were made for the new iPad yet in the feedback customers said they did not work.

The reason the older 3rd party smart covers do not work is because Apple decided to use a polarity sensitive switch in the new iPad which is not found on the 1st or 2nd gen iPad. Apple’s smart covers will work fine. The 3rd party makers had no idea about the polarity change and most smart covers will not work. The smart covers will work on older iPads.

If you are going to buy an Apple smart cover for your “new iPad” and want to save some money by buying a replica smart cover then be sure to:

• Ask the seller if these are the newer smart covers updated to work with the new iPad
• Make sure there is a return policy or refund policy
• Check the feedback on the seller’s history and make sure others are not marking the item as “not working” and giving negative feedback

What’s New in Version 4.1.1

In this release, we added some features and fixed some bugs so now:
– You can go offline in chat
– The right profile picture appears for everyone
– Your list of friends always includes all your friends
– In sets of photos, your name is displayed correctly
– Photos of people who like Facebook Pages load correctly
– Your friend-request notification only lights up if you have a request
– You can change your language to Czech, Danish, Greek, Indonesian, Malaysian, Norwegian (Bokmal), Portuguese (Portugal) or Thai
– If you’ve got a new Retina iPad, you’ll see a crisp, high resolution interface

Firefox 10.0 is now ready for you to update or download.

Here’s some fixes and what is new:

• Mac OS X only – after installing the latest Java release from Apple, Firefox may crash when closing a tab with a Java applet installed (700835)

• Some users may experience a crash when moving bookmarks (681795)

• The forward button is now hidden until you navigate back

• Most add-ons are now compatible with new versions of Firefox by default

• Anti-Aliasing for WebGL is now implemented (see bug 615976)

• CSS3 3D-Transforms are now supported (see bug 505115)
