High Voltage Tattoo is a graphic perspective on today’s global tattoo culture by Kat Von D, star of The Learning Channel’s LA Ink and one of the most talented and popular artists working today. Designed in a style that is reminiscent of a handmade Gothic journal with its red padded cover, ornate typography, and parchmentlike pages, it throws the door wide open to tattooing culture in the way only an insider like Kat can. High Voltage Tattoo traces Kat’s career as an artist, from early childhood influences to recent work, along with examples of what inspires her, information about the show and her shop, her sketches, and personal tattoos. The book goes deep into tattoo process and culture: readers can see up close the pigments, the tools, and the making of complex, even collaborative, tattoos.

Tattoo Image by katie cowden
Shot of Love by Bob Dylan

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love.

Don’t need a shot of heroin to kill my disease,
Don’t need a shot of turpentine, only bring me to my knees,
Don’t need a shot of codeine to help me to repent,
Don’t need a shot of whiskey, help me be president.

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love.

Doctor, can you hear me? I need some Medicaid.
I seen the kingdoms of the world and it’s makin’ me feel afraid.
What I got ain’t painful, it’s just bound to kill me dead
Like the men that followed Jesus when they put a price upon His head.

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love.

I don’t need no alibi when I’m spending time with you.
I’ve heard all of them rumors and you have heard ‘em too.
Don’t show me no picture show or give me no book to read,
It don’t satisfy the hurt inside nor the habit that it feeds.

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love.

Why would I want to take your life?
You’ve only murdered my father, raped his wife,
Tattooed my babies with a poison pen,
Mocked my God, humiliated my friends.

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love.

Don’t wanna be with nobody tonight Veronica not around nowhere,
Mavis just ain’t right.
There’s a man that hates me and he’s swift, smooth and near,
Am I supposed to set back and wait until he’s here?

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love.

What makes the wind wanna blow tonight?
Don’t even feel like crossing the street and my car ain’t actin’ right.
Called home, everybody seemed to have moved away.
My conscience is beginning to bother me today.

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love.

I need a shot of love, I need a shot of love.
If you’re a doctor, I need a shot of love.

Question by Cheese: What is a good site to look at tattoo designs? (or maybe design my own?)?
So my boyfriend wants to get a tattoo and wants my help with it. He wants a phoenix either beneath one of his shoulders (in the corners of his back) or in the top center of his back. He doesn’t want it to be too big and would like it to have red flames (not just black)… and I don’t want it too be too much… we found a couple of designs we kind of like but none of them were “the one.” Any advice?

Best answer:

Answer by Kelly M
Def design your own. even if you end up hating the thing u got then you will like it more because you designed it.

Answer by Kris
www.tattoofinder.com/

Play Me, I’m Yours, Day 2 – Jun 22, 2010 – 28

Tattoo Image by Ed Yourdon
Back up on the terrace overlooking the Bryant Park lawn, I was going to ask this couple about the piano. But (a) the woman had a tattoo that made her look dangerous, and (b) the guy looked like he would punch me in the nose if I interrupted them. So I didn’t…

Note: this photo was published in a Jun 14, 2011 blog titled "Lower Back Tattoo for Girls – “way to Show Sensual Self”."

*****************************************

On the 2nd day of the "Play Me, I’m Yours" project, I started by searching for the piano at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Manhattan’s East Side, and then moved downtown to: a piano at the bandshell in Central Park; a piano I couldn’t find at Bryant Park; a piano at Greely Square, and another one a couple blocks north at Herald Square, in mid-town Manhattan; and then pianos at Tompkins Square Park, St. Mark’s Church, and Astor Place on the lower East Side. I found and photographed a total of seven pianos on this second day, matching what I had done on the first day…

*****************************************

A few years ago, a British artist by the name of Luke Jerram came up with the intriguing idea of spreading pianos around the city, with an open invitation for anyone nearby to wander up and begin playing something. Anything. First it was London, and now it’s here in New York City.

Starting on June 21st, sixty pianos have been donated, painted, and "installed" throughout the five boroughs of New York; you can see the locations here. I managed to visit seven of the pianos on the first day, and another seven on the second day. The program will only be running for two weeks, and I’ll be out of town for at least a few of those days … so it won’t be easy, but my goal is to track down, visit, and photograph all 60 pianos by the time it’s over. Even the one at the Staten Island Zoo, and the one located somewhere in the Joyce Kilmer Park up in the Bronx.

Aside from the logistics of getting to these remote corners of the five boroughs, it sounds like a straightforward task: ride a subway train to the appropriate stop, walk a block or two, take photograph or two, and then go back where you came from. But it’s turning out to be a little more difficult than I had thought, partly because the maps provided on the Web site are somewhat ambiguous and imprecise, and partly because the officials (e.g., guards, cops, grounds-keepers, etc.) whom you would expect to know about such things have been remarkably clueless.

I’ve also been hearing rumors that some of the pianos are being moved around between one day and the next. That might explain why I had to abandon today’s plan to photograph the piano in Bryant Park: after circling the park and the adjoining New York Public Library a couple of times, I concluded they had either hidden the piano, or moved into a subterranean cell.

As for the pianos I’ve found, the experiences have been quite varied. Some of the pianos sit mute and abandoned — including, oddly enough, the very fist piano in Times Square, which had been plunked down at Seventh Avenue and 44th Street, and basically ignored by everyone. The same was true of one of the pianos situated in a hard-to-find corner of Lincoln Center, as well as a piano ostensibly located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art — which turned out to be sitting next to the giant obelisk behind the museum, and on the far side of the inner park roadway.

As for the pianos that do attract some musicians: it’s quite a varied bunch. Some are casual amateurs, some of whom have no idea what the program is all about, and who had no advance warning that the pianos would even be there. Some have obviously been planning and practicing for months. Some of the musicians sing, some don’t; some bring along drummers, guitarists, and vocalists. I even heard that one musician brought some dancers to help liven up his performance, but I haven’t seen that myself…

Anyway, I’ll keep photographing the pianos, and uploading the best of the photographs, until I run out of pianos, run out of time, or run out of energy — whichever happens first.

Tattoo Image by Taxi For Gable
I went to Paris to stay with my friend, Aurelia. To coincide with my trip, i was to take photos of the not so obvious Paris for a magazine based in Norwich called Partywolf. There will be more photos to come and an article to write up as well.
This was shot at Le Louvre.

Young hearts don’t always beat to standard verse & chorus.
We’ll deviate from your script & fake our own deaths tonight.
We’ve plotted our escape, using these instruments & a corrupt language.
With voices stronger than those projected.
The stage is set, but the set’s a fake.
We refuse to memorise the soundtrack to your racket and i will not choreograph the next distraction.
Interruption is music to our ears.
Everything written down is an act.
Soul Meets Body
This is from the shoot we did a whie back for Envosy Mason at the Jett Hotel in Lodo Denver. They did a "Real World" show there a while back and it’s pretty famous for it. Honestly I never seen a real world.
You think I have a lot of Flickr groups.. that’s nothing. I have more URL’s than the Beatles have songs. Yeah… you could say I have a plethora of websites. My current favorite is www.daftphoto.com and if you recall we started following a geeky cute girl at random… but as it turns out she is crazy hot. I had no idea. I mean the first image I saw of her was some Photo booth filtered thing… but no… she is hot like wasabi and has been added to the wish-list (people I’d like to shoot with that is)

So, if you have not met Rachel Barker check out her new images here and let her know that dollen sent you. (as if that will impress her)
Lastly, Many thanks to all for the comments, questions, favs and views. We really do apprecaite it.

Oh and more thing. If you have ever had to tell a model what to bring to a shoot. you need this flickreffect.tumblr.com/post/477512277/i-know-what-you-ar…

True Love is a 10-episode documentary on some of the most important American Tattooers. This first series is the journey of three filmmakers from Italy, getting tattooed along the East Coast. It tries to focus on various aspects of tattooing, but most of all on the relationship tattooer-customer, from the point of view of the same customer. We now temporarily leave the Capitol and we move to Fell’s point Baltimore, MD. Why are we in this “historic waterfront community”? We’re here to meet Hunter Spanks, at the Saints and Sinners tattoo shop. Great guy, great tattooer, awesome guy to talk a lot with, he spent the entire day with us after the tattoo, taking us on a neighborhood tour (and getting some good beers, of course). If you want to know something interesting about Baltimore, just ask him. Shot of my new tat (right deltoid). The upper graphic is Ogham for strength, the bottom one means wisdom. The kanji is Japanese for "art" or "skill" (yes, we quadruple checked on the translation).

Simple yin-yang with the kanji placed on top. I "drew" the Ogham in Photoshop and used the "Arch" feature in Illustrator to create the circular effect. The Ogham were written in green ink – slightly darker than the kanji’s color.

I think it kicks ass.
