Blank wakes up in a pond completely naked and with no memory, not even his real name. So when a hot girl named Megs invites him to a black-market gaming warehouse where winning means information, he doesn’t think twice about playing.

But sometimes the past is better left buried. As Asher and Blank’s worlds collide, the truth comes out - everyone has been lied to...

This was a novel that crushed the depths of my soul and I'm still trying to glue it back together. Asher is our main character, a strong young woman who is in a forbidden love affair with Samuai, a boy born of a higher social class. Samuai loves Asher despite her social status and even wants to help bring down the walls of oppression that the Lifers have lived behind for many years. Everything changes when Asher's brother and Samuai are pronounced dead. Asher is quickly summoned to be the Lady's servant. Lady is the equivalent of say... the first lady of the United States, power-wise anyway. Lady also just happens to be Samuai's mother. While trying her best to do as she's told without sarcasm (which still slips every once in a while), Asher mentally maps out every detail she can remember to relay back to her mother, who is in charge of an upcoming rebellion against the upper class, AKA the Fishies.

Then there's Blank. He's named Blank because he woke up on a planet and has no recollection of who he is. He quickly learns about The Company, an organization who recruits and brainwashes people to join their cause. Blank may be well... literally blank when it comes to the details of his past, but he still knows the difference between good and evil. He rather quickly sides with the people who are against The Company and does whatever he can to help the cause.

Asher and Blank's worlds collide in way that leaves you dizzy. I truly cannot wait to read the next novel in this series.

I fell in love with this book just reading the summary, so you can imagine how thrilled I was when the book followed through. Cora was constantly on the go - both mentally and physically. She never let her guard down, even when everyone else pressured her to just give in. When your entire life has been altered drastically and everything you know is gone, wouldn't you feel the need to fit in with those around you who are in the exact same situation? Cora will not be told what to do or what to think, even by a powerful, slightly intimidating alien named Cassian.

Cassian may be another species who does as he's told and follows orders, but he still has some underlying human traits. I found him to be quite the mystery in the beginning. I clung to the hope of the author diving deeper into his personality and was definitely rewarded. This is a must have novel for anyone who enjoys science fiction with a few drops of mystery.

This was an amazingly mind-blowing slap to the face that left you wondering where you even where. You've read the summary... you think, "Ahh, another thriller with a little mystery." HA! Not a chance! This book has so many twists and turns that your head will spin - in a good way.

So the bedroom light comes on every night at the same time in the house next door - who cares, right? Scott was bored enough to care and it's amazing how one little light can change so many lives. This may be one of my most vague book reviews yet, but I don't care. I'm not spoiling one single detail. I'm not even really into the mystery/thriller genre, but I tore through this book like a bull in a china shop. And yes... there are still broken pieces that need to be picked up.

Another historical fiction book that furthered my love for the genre. Jo Montfort is a young lady in waiting when her father dies. She immediately doubts her father's death was a suicide and starts to lead a double life. One where she walks the streets at night investigating the possible murder of her father and another where she acknowledges her social status and acts accordingly - like a young lady who looks pretty, has a delicate mind, and is well-mannered.

Eddie, a man she meets at the newspaper her father used to own, becomes her partner in the investigation of her father and her father's company secrets. Jo ends up doing and seeing things that rich young ladies of that time period would be shunned and cast out for if her actions were exposed. Jo throws caution to the wind, deciding the truth is worth any consequence.

I loved following Jo's journey and her perseverance throughout was incredible. She could have her entire future ruined every single time she snuck out at night and yet she still risked it. She was a true journalist during a time when woman were thought of as small-minded and weak.

If you're looking for a good historical fiction with a large dose of mystery, this one is for you.

It comes as no surprise that I'm a die hard Ahlborn fan, but REALLY?!? She did it again. She has written another relentlessly appalling, yet magnetic book that I adored.

The Morrow family is the stuff of an old school horror family - all the sadistic tendencies included. One day the baby boy of the family, Rebel, decided he wanted something... kind of like when a kid wants a pet. Except Rebel saw a boy outside. Michael was taken from his front yard at a young age and was raised as a Morrow.

The inner dynamics of the Morrow family are soul-crushing. I'm not talking about Lifetime movie qualities here - more like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre family or one of those messed up stories you glanced at on your social media feed and you thought, "Wow. These things really happen?" That's how this book sucks you in. Just like reading that one sentence news line that catches your eye so you'll click on the link to read the full article. If this book had links, I'd have arthritis from so much clicking.

This book has a story to tell and I promise it is one you'll want to hear.

The plot of this book was made of gold and the author spun a web of treasure with it. Etta Spencer is thrown into a new way of life that she never could even imagine was possible. She is strong-willed and determined, but she still has the same emotions and reactions that any of us would have.

After literally being pushed into a different time period, Etta meets the handsome and smart Nicholas Carter. Nicholas has been saving up to buy his own ship and has done everything in his power to stay away from the family who used to own him as a slave.

These two characters take us on an amazing journey through different time periods and different countries. Each unique place was described perfectly for me to imagine without going overboard with details and information about the time period. I followed their journey right along with them.

There is so much to tel, but such a journey needs to be walked by an individual and not just be told. There were many times I just had to put the book down to sleep. I truly believe everyone will love this book, not just young adults or science fiction readers.

For Tark, this is a blessing. He lived so long with evil and now Okiku is always near, but now Tark has to not only endure Okiku's bloodlust, but he has to help her. He learned the rituals from his aunt and can successfully push evil spirits into vessels that come in the form of dolls. This is a very dangerous matter to involve himself in, but Tark sees it as his duty to dispose of all the evil spirits he can.

After catching up on Tark and Okiku's new way of life, we learn that Tark's aunt agreed to take a ghost hunting reality TV show crew to the infamous Aokigahara, or what the local Japenese call the "suicide forest". The legend says anyone who goes in, never comes out. So, some people go there to simply die. Days pass and there is no sign of the TV show's crew or Tark's aunt. Armed with his own spirit-dispelling knowledge and Okiku's power, Tark flies to Japan to track down his aunt. Tark and Okiku get lost in the Aokigahara and of course... they find evil spirits everywhere. Then they stumble upon a village that has quiet the history. Without giving away any spoilers, I will say the village's inhabitants are creepy as hell. This book immersed me into a reality that I feel only the gifted could see and damn I'm glad I'm not gifted.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the first book in the series, but also for anyone looking for a good horror story that isn't really gory and has just the right amount of creepiness.

Holy shit. This was one creepy book. There were several times I thought I had everything figured out, and I was wrong. And then it just gets creepier...

Michael often travels for work. He gets a message that his wife, Sarah, has gone into labor while he is out of town. He immediately packs and goes home as quickly as possible. He finally reaches the Harrowgate, his apartment complex, and Sarah is there... with his newborn, Tim. In the very beginning, Sarah acted weird... paranoid. Sarah wouldn't even let Michael hold Tim at first. Then Sarah wouldn't allow anyone in the apartment or let Michael leave. Every time he would leave, when he came back, Sarah and Tim were older, different.

Then here comes Greta... the sinister/hippie/loving mother looking type. Michael immediately dislikes her (as do I), but Sarah is enamored with her. Greta even gives Sarah a special tea to drink that makes Sarah feel a little better, but then Greta gives some to Sarah to secretly give to Michael. What's up with that?! Greta always says, "Everything I do and help you with is so that you can be with your baby and Michael." It's awfully rhetorical... Michael and the baby, Michael and the baby... I was to the point of thinking bad thoughts about Greta by the middle of this book.

As the story progresses, Sarah's physical condition worsens, Tim just keeps growing, and Michael realizes there is evil in his home. Something that he has to fight. He wants to keep his beautiful family and NOTHING will change that.

It was particularly hard to review this book without unintentionally including spoilers. Its one of those books like The Exorcist... you want to experience every moment as if it was the first time you're reading it. I recommend this book to anyone who likes creepy mystery/thrillers. I'd have a giveaway for my copy, but my goober wiener dog knocked a glass of water on it so... go buy it for your nook or kindle.

Sydney's mom tries to hold everything together with a thread so thin you can't even see, all the while Sydney can't stop thinking about David, the young boy who will now be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

With all the court costs and attorney fees, Sydney notices when the second car is sold and when other household luxuries are cut down. At her school (a private/very costly one), she is now known as the girl whose brother almost killed a boy drunk driving. In an attempt to escape her surroundings as well as help with finances, Sydney transfers to the local public school. Of course its awkward at first, but that's a given. After school one day, she spontaneously walks into a pizzeria that she assumed would be the local teen hangout spot, only to find it empty. Cue cute boy entrance.... Mac Chatham, the pizzeria owner's son, walks in, puts an apron on, and asks Sydney for her order.

Sydney quickly befriends Mac's sister, Layla, whom she can tell everything to. They hang out and study at her dad's pizzeria almost every weekday while Mac takes orders and makes deliveries. While we're talking about Mac... he's in a band, is very smart, and well... he's what every teenage girl wants in a boy. Sydney starts hanging out with the whole gang... the band, Layla, Mac, and even their friends. She starts to feel vaguely normal again. Then her brother's calls from jail dislodge her new life. Her parents either ignore her or treat her like she's been bad in the past like her brother, even though she never has.

Sydney finds herself at a standstill several times with the Chathams. She has to keep secrets from Mac, she has to keep secrets for Layla... but there is a special sort of connection between Sydney and Mrs. Chatham. She has MS and is totally awesome and down to Earth. And yes... I just said totally awesome. But Sydney's thoughts are never far from Peyton or the boy he accidentally hurt, David. These thoughts cause extreme turmoil within Sydney and throughout the book, we struggle right along with her.

This was my first Dessen novel and it won't be my last. I loved the detailed personalities each character had, which just brought the book to life for me. I also enjoyed the subject matter. I was worried it would just be another YA romance, but it was much more. I am an adamant Jodi Picoult fan and this book was very much like a YA version of a Picoult book... which is a definite compliment.

I am already a HUGE fan of Hugh Howey's Silo Series, so I decided to dabble in the world of graphic novels and see what I'd come up with.

I'll admit, I'm still not a graphic novel fan, but that didn't stop me from enjoying this one. The pictures/paintings/sketches were just perfect for the book's bleak environment. I LOVED when at just the right moment, every picture was tinted different shades of red for a particular scene. These graphic novelists have perfect timing.

The story follows the book fairly well in my opinion. I think I only remember one or two differences that weren't a big deal. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys graphic novels... especially if you also like the dystopian or post-apocalyptic genres.

I adored this book. I adore mythology. I adore Chinese mythology even more because I WANT TO KNOW EVERYTHING. Instead of just summarizing a book without spoilers speckled with my opinions, for this review, I'm going for short and sweet.

The author captured the essence of the ancient Chinese Kingdom of Xia so gracefully that I truly felt as if I was there. Historical fiction was my first genre love and this book was just begging for me to pick it up. The world building, the details pertaining to mortals, demons, even the immortals... I could imagine everything so clearly in my mind. The bravery of the main character was inspiring. If I went through the changes she did, were faced with the same challenges... I'm not sure I'd measure up. The plot was seamless, as was the author's writing. I devoured this book in hours and you will too.

This was a decent mystery/thriller for me. I honestly bought it thinking it was a horror novel, but it turned out to be a good mistake. The main character is Nora, a writer who enjoys her independent lifestyle, including her precious alone time. She once dated a boy named James when she was a teenager. They broke it off and kept the secret of why... well, a secret for over ten years. Nora denies it even to herself, but she's still not over James.

Out of the blue, a woman named Flo emails Nora inviting her to a hen party weekend at a secluded house in the woods for one of Nora's old high school friends, Claire. Claire was an amazing best friend ten years ago. Nora and Claire did everything together, but Claire was always the one of the two who shined brightest. Nora was confused when she read the invitation... Nora and Claire had drifted apart years ago. Claire spends a few days thinking on whether or not to accept the invite. She eventually decides to go and rides up to the secluded house with another one of her old friends, Nina. There are a few other characters who come along for the weekend getaway as well such as Mel and Tom. It can't be a party without people, right?

As soon as Claire arrives at the house, she drops a bomb on Nora. Claire is marrying Nora's old flame, James. Nora finally understands why she was invited to a party for someone she hasn't even heard from in ten years. This was Claire's way of making sure that Nora knew, but by breaking the news as easily as possible. Of course, Nora is upset, but she reminds herself that her and James' relationship ended ten years ago. Nora and the rest of the group try to enjoy the weekend as much as possible.

Let me talk about Flo... she is quite the character. Flo, the overprotective friend of Claire, now starts to act strangle. She makes everyone uncomfortable, including me. She's very snippy and reminds everyone how they should be eternally grateful to even be considered one of Claire's friends. Flo even dresses like Claire, which unfortunately looks unflattering because of the body type difference between Claire and Flo. Everyone just assumes Flo is obsessed with Claire and they try to ignore her strangeness and get on with the weekend, or more truthfully... get to the end of the weekend.

So many deceptions, secrets, lies, truths... all unfold during this weekend getaway. It seemed never-ending. I thought I had it figured out several times, but I was fooled. If you're looking for a mystery/thriller with a great well-rounded group of characters, then this one is for you.

I honestly don't even know where to start, but here goes nothing. There are two worlds - ours and the magical world the jinn live in. One day a crack forms between the two worlds and the jinn, both good and bad, slip through to our world. The jinn can do many, many things... influence people to do just about anything, curse them for eternity, give them a magical gift... they're magical creatures so... yeah.

We follow a few humans and get to witness the weird things that start happening to them, to people around them, and to the world around them. This is when "the time of the strangenesses" begin, which last for the amount of time the title of this novel suggests.

Before the crack was opened, a good jinn princess slipped into the human world and lived for many years. Almost all jinn are incapable of human emotions such as love, jealously, gratefulness, shame... and the princess wanted to experience those. She married a philosopher and had many children. Her children all had one thing in common - they had no earlobes. Weird, but not too weird, right? Eventually the philosopher chooses work over his wife and moves away, leaving her and their children. With this, the jinn princess goes back to her world.

Now years later, this crack between the two worlds is causing chaos and fear. Remember the jinn's children? Think about how they had children, then more children, and so on until there are now countless half human/half jinn people in the world. When that crack was opened, many things start to plague these earlobe-less people and you can't help but be sucked into their lives.

Rushdie presents yet another stunning literary novel full of fantasy, stories I have no how how he came up with, and a writing style that always keep me interested.

Beth Fremont and Jennifer Scribner-Snyder know that somebody is monitoring their work e-mail. (Everybody in the newsroom knows. It's company policy.) But they can't quite bring themselves to take it seriously. They go on sending each other endless and endlessly hilarious e-mails, discussing every aspect of their personal lives.

Meanwhile, Lincoln O'Neill can't believe this is his job now- reading other people's e-mail. When he applied to be "internet security officer," he pictured himself building firewalls and crushing hackers- not writing up a report every time a sports reporter forwards a dirty joke. When Lincoln comes across Beth's and Jennifer's messages, he knows he should turn them in. But he can't help being entertained-and captivated-by their stories. By the time Lincoln realizes he's falling for Beth, it's way too late to introduce himself. What would he say?

Poor, poor Lincoln. In love with a woman who doesn't even know he exists... or does she? :) Lincoln lands a (what I'd call cushy) job as an internet security officer in a news building on night shift. He spends a few hours a night checking a folder that collects emails that contain flagged (or work inappropriate) words/phrases and then send those employees warnings. It takes him about two hours of his eight hour shift to actually do his job. So naturally, he gets bored.

Two people keep getting their emails flagged: Beth and Jennifer. Instead of just sending them warnings, Lincoln reads their emails... all of them. Every night he tries to keep himself from reading them, but he can't. He becomes completely engrossed in these ladies' personal lives. He knows he should stop. He eventually confessed to a female friend, who also advises him to stop. But... its a little too late. Lincoln falls hard for Beth, a movie reviewer from the newsroom.

I was so curious as to what Lincoln would do. Would he run up the stairs and confess his undying love to a virtual (pun-intended) stranger? Would he stalk her outside of just reading her emails and it end up creeping me out? Or maybe Beth will run into him and that FATE thing would happen.
There's no way I'm spilling the beans on this one, but trust me... you are going to want to pick up this book just to find out what happens next. Rowell has written yet another show-stopping book and I just can't help but be truly impressed.

The queen of the kingdom chose Twylla (or recognized her) as the reincarnation of the goddess because legend says the Daunen Embodied will have fiery red hair and will sing beautifully.

Twylla lives her life inside the castle walls, feared by all the servants and guards. Her skin is poison. With a simple touch, she can kill a full grown man. Such as, she is tasked with doling out punishment to all traitors, for which the consequence is death. Twylla despises killing, but she knows this is her calling and that it must be done. Then one day her childhood friend is sentenced to die. Twylla does her job once again, but she is a child no more.

The queen is fierce and violent. She really just needs a swift slap to the face, but this book is not set in my time period unfortunately. The queen is the kind of person that you don't even look at for fear she'll take your expression the wrong way and have you killed. The prince, whom Twylla is betrothed to, travelled for most of his younger years only to come back to witness the corruption his mother has bestowed. He glimpses Twylla's distaste for the kingdom's queen and for the death penalties she is forced to perform. Twylla's long-time guard becomes ill and is replaced by Lief, an expert swordsman from a different kingdom, where their society and politics are quite different. Twylla slowly warms up to her new guard and actually has conversations with him, which is something unheard of in the castle. Lief causes Twylla to take a step back and look around her... to see the things she should have noticed before. Twylla and Lief eventually become romantically involved, but its not so annoying as it is at least not insta-love.

This book was definitely an interesting read. The fantasy element wasn't as prominent as I thought it would be, but that was made up for with the folklore. The author basically conjured up a new religion so... kudos.

Far away, in their village, her sister is mourning. Through her pain, she calls upon the desert winds, conjuring a subtle unseen magic, and something besides death stirs the air. Back at the palace, the words she speaks to Lo-Melkhiin every night are given a strange life of their own. Little things, at first: a dress from home, a vision of her sister. With each tale she spins, her power grows. Soon she dreams of bigger, more terrible magic: power enough to save a king, if she can put an end to the rule of a monster.

At first, I got the... "I volunteer as tribute!" vibe when the girl swapped places with her sister. She was sacrificing her life so her sister could live. So... that's basically the same thing, right? This still did not deter me from the book by any means.

The main character is one brave girl. Not only did she decide to die so her sister could live, but she decided if she was going to go die - she'd go out with a bang. She wanted to kill Lo-Melkhin. I mean, who wouldn't? Lo-Melkhin had killed over 300 girls - all of them his brides to be. But this time would be different. The girl tried something none of the other had... to peak Lo-Melkhin's interest. The first night, when almost every bride died, the girl told Lo-Melkhin a story. Soon dawn arrived and Lo-Melkhin agreed to let her live another day so he could hear the rest of the story.

Throughout the book, the girl seemingly challenges Lo-Melkhin with her words, which of course of made him more curious. It soon become apparent that Lo-Melkhin isn't really himself and he has some sort of power. The girl starts to see this mysterious power during their long nights full of story-telling. Even Lo-Melkhin's mother can sense her son is different... changed somehow.

All the while, the girl's sister and the people from the girl's village have been praying to the girl as if she was already dead and considered a smallgod for sacrificing herself. Now the girl starts to sense a sort of power within herself. Maybe now the girl can finally face Lo-Melkhin and prevent more deaths.

This book was a wonderful reboot of Arabian Nights... or at least it had a few similarities. I loved the main character and the snide comments she made to Lo-Melkhin all the while knowing she could be breathing her last breath. I recommend this book to everyone... seriously. Even if you don't care for the YA or fantasy genres, I still think you'll love it.

Recorded by the famous Roman poet, Ovid, Asterion tells of his boyhood in Crete under the cruel hand of his stepfather Minos, his adventures with his friend, Theseus, and his growing love for the beautiful Phaedra. And of course what really happened in the labyrinth.

This is the true story of the minotaur. Ovid, a scholar who has written a huge volume of myths/legends, travels to the site of the minotaur's labyrinth. His tour guide Asterion, who is known as the minotaur, leads Ovid up the mountain and to the crumbling labyrinth.

Eventually Asterion decides to tell Ovid that he is the infamous minotaur, still alive and living close to the labyrinth. At first Ovid is just humoring Asterion, allowing Asterion to tell his story... this is when the book really starts for me. Asterion weaves the threads that bind story of his life together simply, yet with a heavy heart. The hardships he faced during his childhood... how he was ridiculed and looked down upon because of his appearance, how his father despised him because he was the bastard son of a god. The love of his life and how she was stolen from him. And then the most impressive twist of the story... the minotaur's time in the labyrinth. We all know the story. Asterion tells the true version, which of course is much less gory and extremely compelling. I felt so many emotions during Asterion's life story. But it was Asterion's perseverance that really resonated with me. I don't think I could have kept my own and not turned into the monster everyone thought I was if I was treated as he was.

This was a very thought-provoking read and I absolutely adore mythology, so basically the author wrote this for me. :) So thanks, Phillip.

Starlight by Chelsea M. Campbell

I am very surprised that this book isn’t well known - I gave it 5 stars!

Going Down In Flames by Chris Cannon

Since Bryn is the only crossbreed at the Institute for Excellence, all eyes are on her, but it’s a particular black dragon, Zavien, who catches her attention.

Zavien is tired of the Council’s rules. Segregated clans, being told who to love, and close-minded leaders make freedom of choice almost impossible. The new girl with the striped hair is a breath of fresh air, and with Bryn’s help, they may be able to change the rules.

At the Institute, old grudges, new crushes, and death threats are all part of a normal day for Bryn. She’ll need to learn to control her dragon powers if she wants to make it through her first year at school. But even focusing on staying alive is difficult when you’re falling for someone you can't have.

Again, I also gave this book 5 stars! If you like dragons and badass heroines, read it!

Hotwire by Cindy M. Hogan

I actually read this book as a standalone, and really enjoyed it!

Hope’s Rebellion by Cindy M. Hogan

There are only two seasons in Godenor: summer and winter. Weather brings the only surprises to a society where everything is planned, and everyone's status is determined at birth... by the color of their hair.

Rinna has the right hair, Drexi the wrong, and Prelly is almost too ordinary - in every way but one. Small mistakes bring them together, creating ripples in a pond that knows nothing but serenity. If they reach their goals, they can't help but shatter the world they know.

Love of any kind, even the bond of friendship, isn't allowed in their world... but then, the heart can't always follow orders.

While the synopsis only sounds okay, the book is very interesting and has a lot of plot twists.

People would kill to be thin. Solu’s luxurious celebrity-filled “Cruise to Lose” is billed as “the biggest cruise since the Titanic,” and if the new diet sweetener works as promised - dropping five percent of a person’s body weight in just days - it really could be the answer to the world’s obesity problem. But Laurel is starting to regret accepting her friend Viv’s invitation. She’s already completely embarrassed herself in front of celebrity host, Tom Forelli (otherwise known as the hottest guy ever!) and she’s too seasick to even try the sweetener. And that’s before Viv and all the other passengers start acting really strange.

But will they die for it, too? Tom Forelli knows that he should be grateful for this job and the opportunity to shed his childhood “Baby Tom-Tom” image. His publicists have even set up a ‘romance’ with a sexy reality star. But as things on the ship start to get a bit wild, he finds himself drawn to a different girl. And when his celebrity hosting gig turns into an expose on the shocking side effects of Solu, it’s Laurel that he’s determined to save.

I honestly didn't think I'd like this book when I picked it up. I thought I was getting into a story about rich kids on a cruise boat trying the latest fad diet (a sweetener in this case), and just acting like idiots.

But... I was pleasantly surprised. Not everyone was a kid, or an idiot. Laurel is a normal young adult just trailing along with her friend, Viv, on the cruise ship for Solu's launch of it's sweetener that makes you drop the pounds. Fortunately, Laurel gets seasick immediately and doesn't eat anything with the sweetener. Now let's throw in Tom, an adult that is still seen as a child actor. He's on the cruise ship to turn his professional image around and get back in the acting game. Tom is a fitness fanatic and watches what he eats so of course, he doesn't try the sweetener either.

Everyone on the cruise ship starts dropping weight. They're happy and stuffing their faces with pastries, desserts... anything that Solu puts the sweetener in. A few days later, and the shit hits the fan. People are losing too much weight, are showing clear signs of addiction, and are starting to become violent. Solu ends up giving a set amount of sweetener packets to each passenger. One passenger during an act of defiance, grabs a few sweetener packets and pops them in her mouth.. eating the paper container and all.

Eventually Laurel and Tom realize something weird is going on and they try to get help while all hell breaks loose on the cruise ship. Passengers aren't just acting like strung-out addicts, they are extremely violent and completely insane. Laurel and Tom have nothing less than an impossible task of getting help while staying alive.

I won't spoil anything for you, but the ending was what really made me enjoy the book. Many authors sugar-coat (pun intended) their endings, and this author did not. It was refreshing and honestly... I felt trapped and a little claustrophobic while reading this book. Which only upped the creep factor, which is exactly what I need from a horror book.

2015 Summer Blogger Promo Tour - Wonderland Novels

After checking out her blog, I found out she was lucky enough to attend BEA this year! I just had to know what she thought! Thank you in advance for participating, Alice!

What I Liked About BEA

Everyone was so friendly! On my first day at BEA, there was only one ARC of A Thousand Nights left at a galley drop, and a guy and I reached for it at the same time and he let me have it! It was one of my most anticipated ARCs, so I was so happy.

Going off this, people on lines were very friendly and it was easy to strike up a conversation with them. Being around fellow book lovers is wonderful since we automatically know we have something in common.

It was organized for the most part. Sure, lines were long, but they weren't all over the place and had some form to it.

Of course, meeting so many lovely authors and getting books that I'm excited for was amazing!

What I Didn't Like

This is hard, since it was a positive experience overall. But if theres anything, it would be all the line waiting! Theres obviously nothing they can do about this, but waiting on lines can get tiring.

Oh, and the fact that it's moving to Chicago next year...

Okay, obviously. I think this is basically everyone’s #1. Fantasy is my favorite genre and THIS SOUNDS GLORIOUS. SO GLORIOUS I COULD WEEP.

The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine
Though I haven’t finished the Defiance trilogy yet, I LOVED the first book and can’t wait to get the rest of them. And if you know me, you also know that I love fairytale retellings and adaptions! Plus, THAT COVER.

Blackhearts by Nicole Castroman
“Blackbeard origin story” are THE ONLY WORDS I NEED TO HEAR.

The Mirror King by Jodi Meadows
After the ending of OQ? Yeah. I love Jodi. I LOVE that cover. I NEED this book.

The Weight of Feathers by Anna-Marie McLemore
This sounds beautiful and so intriguing. I haven’t heard much on it, though now that it’s out in the world I expect to hear plenty of wonderful things!

The Year We Fell Apart by Emily Martin
This sounds all kinds of fantastic and all kinds of heartbreaking. Contemporary is probably my least read YA genre, but when I find a good one, it really sticks with me.

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken
You thought you could get away without seeing this for once, right? SORRY, NOPE. I can’t make a list like this without including Passenger. Pirates and time travel and a kickass cover? YES, PLEASE. Plus, from what I’ve seen so far, the writing is absolutely fantastic.

I limited myself to seven - and only ones with covers - because I could honestly go on forever. There are so many incredible sounding books coming out in 2016 and 2017 that I’m not sure my mind can handle it. Some honorary mentions: The Love That Split the World by Emily Henry, Assassin’s Heart by Sarah Ahiers, Given to the Sea by Mandy McGinnis, Hunted by Meagan Spooner, The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye, Burning Glass by Kathryn Purdie, and The Stars Turned Away by Lisa Maxwell! (I told you. I could go on forever.)

Favorite Bookish Things

1. Half Price Books - I love slightly lower prices as much as the next person, so it’s always a smart option for me to go to Half Price Books. I’ve gotten almost half of my book collection at two of the local Half Price Books stores, and I love just looking through the shelves to see what they have in stock. Another perk is that I sell a few of the books that I didn’t enjoy to them, and I usually put that money towards my next big book haul.

2. Collecting Hardcovers - This one’s a little obvious, right? It all started when I was a teenager, and my grandma was buying me a lot of books by the same author. She finally suggested that i just get his whole collection in hardcover, and I did. But then I started buying everything in hardcover.

3. Pre-Order Giveaways - I just love when I find out that an author or publisher decides to give out swag to people who preordered a certain book. It’s fun to be able to add those bookish trinkets to my library.

4. Buying Books - I buy too many books, and by that, I mean that I have a lot of books, and I’ve run out of shelf space. I try to limit what I buy, and when I need to, I sell them. But I’ve been into the Books for Trade movement, so I’ll probably start trading a few of my paperbacks and hardcovers.

5. Connecting with Authors - When I was in college, I had the chance to meet one of my favorite authors, and it really inspired me to start reaching out to those I love on social media. I just love sending a compliment their way every once in a while, and I love when I get to chat with a few.

Favorite Non-Bookish Things

1. Collecting Beach Glass - My parents have a campsite in Erie County, Pennsylvania, and when I’m feeling brave (which is pretty much all the time), I climb down the cliff to the shores of Lake Erie. I love the beach at the campground because only the campers can go, so you can find a lot of beach glass if you go at just the right time. Unfortunately I was a dummy when I was little and I gave everything I found to my mom, so now I only have a small jar that’s full. I’m hoping to have one like my mom’s one day - a four gallon glass container!

2. Concerts - Don’t laugh at me, but my first concert when when I was in fourth grade, and my mom took me and my sister to see Smashmouth with her friend and daughters. It was at a bar, but I had a blast. Now I’m more into arena and stadium tours, but I’ve seen Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, One Direction, Zac Brown Band, Usher, Chris Brown (I chaperoned that one because there’s not a snowball’s chance that I’d ever pay to see him), Ed Sheeran, Demi Lovato, and probably a lot more than I can remember right now.

3. United States Travel - I think there is so much to be seen in the United States, and I want to see it all before I die. So far I’ve been to Disney, Orlando, Colonial Williamsburg, Gettysburg, and a few other places. I also try to see as much of my hometown (Pittsburgh) as possible because there is so much history here too.

4. Sewing - My machine is out of commission right now, but I love to sew! I’ve made a few pieces of clothing for myself, and I also made baby clothes when I was in high school to donate to a shelter. I even made a quilt for my brother for the ADA. I also enjoy cross stitch.

5. Going to Target and Spending Money on Stuff I Don’t Need - The dollar section of Target is a vice of mine. I go and buy pretty much everything. Stationary? Check. Desk accessories? Check. Frozen bags? Check. Basically everything I don’t need finds its way to my house, and I’m concerned that it’s becoming a problem.

In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

I did a buddy read on this book with some fantastic ladies I met on Instagram. We all had the book and had kept putting it off and so we banded together to tackle this one. I really enjoyed this book. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars from me is because of Laia. She has done everything so she can save her brother, but at the same time she kind of half-asses it. If you're going to spy, then spy. Don't tip toe around it.

Other than that, the world building aspect of the novel was on par, as were the characters' personalities. I could easily understand and feel the emotions that each character portrayed, which is something I think every book needs. I do wish I could've known more about Helene. She isn't mentioned in the summary of the book or even in most reviews that I've read. She is not one of the two main characters, but I believe she had a HUGE role in this book and overall... she was just badass. She's like the female equivalent to Braveheart's William Wallace.

This was a wonderful debut and everyone is excited that this will not be a stand-alone novel. I admit.. I'm excited too. I just know I'll forgot everything and have to re-read this before the sequel comes out. This gets taxing, but more often than not.. it's worth it.
