Picking The Right Web Browser

Picking the right web browser is very important to maintain the highest level of security for your machine. Just because your computer came with a particular browser doesn't mean that it is necessarily the best one for you. If you are using Windows (XP or Vista)or Mac I would pick Firefox. Firefox is the most secure and well designed web browser that I have had the chance to use. My second pick is Safari, Safari comes preloaded on all Mac machines and is a really good web browser. The only browser that I would avoid is Internet Explorer. I have fixed many computers where the only problem was that they were using Internet Explorer and they were experiencing slower internet speeds.

IPhone 3G Will You Buy It?

Steve Jobs announced last Monday that they are going to release a new version of the IPhone. The new phone will still be on the AT&T network and will be able to access the 3G network. This means faster emailing and web browsing. The 3G service is only available in lager metropolitan areas, but they are working to expand the coverage area. I would suggest checking the coverage map on their website before purchasing. The phone will also include a built in GPS receiver which will make navigation in your car more reliable. Some wonder if upgrading from the first generation IPhone will be necessary. If you ask me it all depends on how much money you have too spend on it. Be aware that the software updates that Steve Jobs made at WWDC 2008 will work on the older phone's and will be free of charge but if you want the new update for your IPod Touch it will cost you just over $9.00. Some of the changes he made will make the already business friendly phone even more compatible with a business network infrastructure such as Microsoft Exchange. I have also heard that if you upgrade your older phone you can still use it as an IPod Touch like device. The new App. Store is a new feature to both the Touch and the phone. This means that you will be able to access a wide array of applications from your device such as games and other programs that will make your phone even more interactive and usable. My advice, think before you buy. If you have some money laying around too take care of the new lowered price and you live in the 3G network area I would buy, but if you don't live in in the network area and you already have the first IPhone I say just keep one you have. Because the new IPhone is basically just a hardware upgrade not as much a software upgrade.

More Tips For Online Safety

When our country and world is in the state that it is now you need to protect yourself. Not just in your everyday life but also online. I am here to tell you ways that you can protect you and your family online!

1. When you sign up for any account like You-tube, MySpace, Facebook or any other site, check around and take your time looking at the security and privacy features that each individual site offers. Most sites will have a designated area for these options.

2. Check around for any software that will make your computer more secure. If you would like me to find some that will work for your system just email me. When setting up your wireless router always enable MAC address filtering so that you can tell the router what computers are allowed on your network. I would recommend using Lavasoft Ad-Watch 2007. There is a free version on their site. You can pay to get full access of the program, but the free one does a good job.

3. Do not ever put information on a site that you are having second thoughts about. If you think that the site looks a little odd just don't use it.

4. When you are using internet in a public place where you are using a network that multiple people are on, use extra caution too make sure that no one can access files on your computer.

5. When using a laptop in a public setting pay extra attention to people that might be trying to look at your screen too see what you are working on or what sites that you are visiting. 3M offers screen privacy filters for notebooks. They just slide right over the screen and you can only see the screen clearly if you are looking at it directly.

6. When on MySpace set your profile to where you don't have your top friends listed,here's why. Lets say that one of your friends revealed more about themselves on their profile then you care to, such as location etc. If someone went on there profile and saw that you had been let's say "hanging out" with that person, then they would know the location of you and possibly other information. For some this might be a little extreme, but it is just one more step that you can take to become more private and safe online.

7. When sending an email to multiple people, always put everyones address in the BCC: field. BCC stands for "Blind Carbon Copy", this means that when everyone receives the email they can not see the email addresses of the other people that received that same email. This is just a little courtesy that you could show to the people that you are sending an email to. This is a step that is rarely taken when sending a chain email, but it is very important for the people who would like to keep their email address private.

PDA's To Track Olympic VIP's In Beijing

Modified PDA's (Personal Data Assistants) will be handed out to guests of sponsors, dignitaries and other important guests, that might have trouble finding there way around the city. The devices will be operating on a program called Event Track. Event Track can do many tasks that will make the visit just a little bit simpler. It can send a message to a designated cab company, find information on local restaurants and entertainment. It also can provide directions, which will make navigating the streets of Beijing a little easier. Officials say that the devices will help with there two main issues traffic and security.

Email I received about credit card security

Quite interesting WARNINGS ABOUT CREDIT CARD FRAUD & THEFT.

SCENE 1.

This is a new one. People sure stay busy trying to cheat us, don't they?

A friend went to the local gym and placed his belongings in the locker. After the workout and a shower, he came out, saw the locker open, and thought to himself, 'Funny, I thought I locked the locker. Hmm, 'He dressed and just flipped the wallet to make sure all was in order. Everything looked okay -- all cards were in place.

A few weeks later his credit card bill came -- a whooping bill of $14,000! He called the credit card company and started yelling at them, saying that he did not make the transactions.

Customer care personnel verified that there was no Mistake in the system and asked if his card had been stolen. 'No,' he said, but then took out his wallet, pulled out the credit card, and yep -- you guessed it -- a switch had been made.

An expired similar credit card from the same bank was in the wallet. The thief broke into his locker at the gym and switched cards.

Verdict: The credit card issuer said since he did not report the card missing earlier, he would have to pay the amount owed to them.

How much did he have to pay for items he did not buy? $9,000! Why were there no calls made to verify the amount swiped? Small amounts rarely trigger a 'warning bell' with some credit card companies. It just so happens that all the small amounts added up to big one!

SCENE 2.

A man at a local restaurant paid for his meal with his credit card. The bill for the meal came, he signed it, and the waitress folded the receipt and passed the credit card along.

Usually, he would just take it and place it in his wallet or pocket. Funny enough, though, he actually took a look at the card and, lo and behold, it was the expired card of another person.

He called the waitress and she looked perplexed. he took it back, apologized, and hurried back to the counter under the watchful eye of the man.

All the waitress did while walking to the counter was wave the wrong expired card to the counter cashier, and the counter cashier immediately looked down and took out the real card.

No exchange of words -- nothing! She took it and came back to the man with an apology.

Verdict:

Make sure the credit cards in your wallet are yours.

Check the name on the card every time you sign for something and/or the card is taken away for even a short period of time.

Many people just take back the credit card without even looking at it, 'assuming' that it has to be theirs.

FOR YOUR OWN SAKE, DEVELOP THE HABIT OF CHECKING YOUR CREDIT CARD EACH TIME IT IS RETURNED TO YOU AFTER A TRANSACTION!

SCENE 3:

Yesterday I went into a pizza restaurant to pick up an order that I had called in. I paid by using my Visa Check Card which, of course, is linked directly

to my checking account. The young man behind the counter took my card, swiped it, then laid it on the counter as he waited for the approval, which is pretty standard procedure. While he waited, he picked up his cell phone and started dialing.

I noticed the phone because it is the same model I have, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Then I heard a click that sounded like my phone sounds when I take a picture. He then gave me back my card but kept the phone in his hand as if he was still pressing buttons.

Meanwhile, I'm thinking: I wonder what he is taking a picture of, oblivious to what was really going on.

It then dawned on me: the only thing there was my credit card, so now I'm paying close attention to what he is doing. He set his phone on the counter, leaving it open. About five seconds later, I heard the chime that tells you that the picture has been saved.

Now I'm standing there struggling with the fact that this boy just took a picture of my credit card.

Yes, he played it off well, because had we not had the same kind of phone, I probably would never have known what happened.

Needless to say, I immediately canceled that card as I was walking out of the pizza parlor.

All I am saying is, be aware of your surroundings at all times. Whenever you are using your credit card take caution and don't be careless.

Notice who is standing near you and what they are doing when you use your card. Be aware of phones, because many have a camera phone these days.

When you are in a restaurant and the waiter/waitress brings your card and receipt for you to sign, make sure you scratch the number off.

Some restaurants are using only the last four digits, but a lot of them are still putting the whole thing on there.

I have already been a victim of credit card fraud and, believe me, it is not fun. The truth is that they can get you even when you are careful, but don't make it easy for them.

These days you see many websites and gaming systems that offer quick and easy downloads of games and software. There are many reasons that these companies do this, mostly for cutting the cost of shipping and packaging. This is not always good for the consumer in the long run. Although it may sound good at first, just imagine purchasing a fifty dollar video game from Sony's Playstation Store and then a week later your PS3 crashes and you lose the game. What are you supposed to do? If you purchase hard copies of your games and software you do not need to worry about system crashes or hard drive failures.

Motorola's New Business Deal

On Wednesday the company that is famous for phones like the Razr announced that they will be splitting there failing cell phone operations between two companies. They said that they failed to make a second act since the Razr has lost some of it's popularity. Motorola plans to focus on producing products like modems and business communication systems. Motorola shares climbed 10 cents or 1% Wednesday to $9.86.

New Fitness Partnership

I recently wrote about Nike and Apple partnering up again to make fitness machines and ipods compatible. Adidas and Samsung announced that for the last two years they have been working on a cellular phone that tracks your workout. It is called miCoach a.k.a Samsung F110. It comes with five components that provide audio workout feedback. The components include the phone,a stride sensor clip that hooks to sneaker laces,a heart-rate monitor, adidas compatible apparel,and accesses to the miCoach website where you can track the information and set goals. The product is going to be released in Europe at the end of March, but will not hit the U.S. until next year. Some other features include up to 4 gigs of music storage, audio cues to let you know when you are off pace. So if you are in U.S. you will have to strap on the old pedometer until next year.

1. Don't talk to anyone that you don't know on chat rooms,myspace etc.

2. Use all of the safety features that these sites offer you. They will all keep you safer.

3. Keep two email addresses, one for personal emails (friends,family,business etc.) and also keep one for sites like youtube,myspace and other sites where others might see it.

4. If you don't feel comfortable with a site or giving information to a site DONT DO IT!

5. When filling out forms online some sites make information optional, if something is optional don't take the risk of filling it out, it is not needed.

Nike and Apple to make ipod compatible with gym equipment

Apple and Nike announced Tuesday that they are making an ipod that can plug into gym equipment and track your workout. The information can be seen on the Nike website. Some gyms and equipment manufactures have already looked into the product. The two companies haven't announced any other details.

Whether you are doing research for school,work or for fun, there is a chance that you might get the wrong information. To prevent this follow these tips:

1. Don't use sites like Wikipedia, because the information can be changed and updated by anyone.

2. Use online encyclopedia's and dictionaries like Webster's. Some computers come with preloaded versions of these.

3. Sites that end in .gov or .edu can be trusted in most cases.

4. Infoplease.com is an all in one site, that offers dictionaries,encyclopedias and a thesaurus.
