The Intelligent Systems Group of Luna Innovations has an opening for a Senior Research Engineer to support the development of damage monitoring systems and accelerated corrosion and cracking test methods. Novel systems are being researched and developed to measure various forms of corrosion, protection system breakdown, and cracking (environment assisted cracking and fatigue).

There is an expectation that the candidate would have the capacity to work with both electrical and mechanical engineers to automate experimental setups and develop prototype products.

The position will require interaction with government and industry customers and a capacity to quickly understand customer needs and translate these into program plans and system requirements.

Finally, the successful candidate will eventually need to take initiative in identifying development opportunities and lead proposal writing efforts for government and commercial customers. There will also be the additional responsibility to publish technical papers and present research results in national and international forums.

Required:

Ph.D. or Master’s degree with experience in engineering with some specialization in corrosion, fatigue and fracture, or materials science.
Ability to apply knowledge of materials, corrosion, and electrochemistry to the development, testing, and validation of sensors and measurement systems used to diagnose and predict corrosion damage is needed.
Candidates must be able to participate in multidisciplinary teams to design, develop, and test advanced health monitoring, diagnostic, and prognostic technologies for use in maintenance management and condition monitoring of complex military and commercial systems, including military/commercial aircraft, infrastructure, and ships.

Desired Experience and Skill Sets:

Ability to manage and support several disparate programs in parallel
Familiarity with corrosion and mechanical test methods and theory
Experience modeling corrosion, fatigue, or cracking processes
Experience with corrosion sensors
Knowledge of the theory of material damage modes and mechanisms, along with the capacity to design and execute experimental plans to progress research activities
Knowledge and experience in modeling failure processes would be helpful
Strong written and oral communication skills
Skills in fatigue and fracture analysis would be advantageous

Able to perform and lead task work related to analysis of complex systems including vibration analysis, frequency and time domain analyses, dynamic and static modeling, statistical analysis, automated embedded reasoning, and other signal processing
Capable of developing advanced empirical and deterministic models for data fusion, fault detection, classification, and service life prediction that can be used as embedded algorithms in smart sensor networks

Desired Experience and Skill Sets:

Demonstrated ability to lead the development of successful technical proposals (academic, commercial, and/or government).
Ability to provide leadership (technical, schedule, and budgetary) across several programs concurrently. Provide technical expertise to others frequently, as needs arise.
