Redemption is a new indie brand by Tyler Hoppel, who started the label after being rejected from a job on the basis that he had tattoos. The brand is about being proud of yourself the way you are, regardless of how others view you. To be honest I’m not sure how this otherwise good idea relates to the look of the brand or the brand’s name, but if it works it works. The designs are standard indie label fare — logo designs done in a bold, eye-catching style. The art style varies from shirt to shirt, but overall the quality is good and worth looking into if you like logo tees. At the moment there are only four shirts for sale, though I wouldn’t be surprised if Redemption expanded in the near future.

Shirts: $18

Shipping: Starts at $4.90 to the US.

Lunch League is a new company that launched August 2010, serving up food and cooking-inspired designs with a classic, minimalist style.

Joining the ranks of the food-themed indie brands is Lunch League, which goes for a simple and iconic look in its style. A lot of shirts feature nothing but a white silhouette of a food or cooking-related item, such as a coffee cup or chicken leg. Others go for a classic logo design advertising things like “Team Grilled Cheese” and “Sea Salt Society”. I do rather like their minimalist, subtle take on the theme, which should be a breath of fresh air for those tired of the gaudy junk/fast food designs that feature on a lot of food-related tees. On the downside, they are on the expensive/premium side.

On the bright side, Lunch League donates 10% of its profits to food-related charities, “so that others might better keep their bellies brimming.”

Shirts: $35

Shipping: $7 flat rate to the lower 48 states, and $16 to Alaska and Hawaii. They don’t offer international shipping at this time.

8-Bit Zombie is an indie clothing company based in Colorado. As the name of the brand implies, most of its shirts revolve around 8-bit NES titles and other mainstays from the 80’s, combined with the usual zombie/horror/gore stuff that’s so popular nowadays. Thankfully, the 8-bit aspect is enough to give their designs a burst of uniqueness in the saturated market. If you’re a fan of old school video games (Nintendo ones in particular), you’ll get a kick out of 8BZ’s shirts, which pay homage to classics like Legend of Zelda and Metroid with a splash of horror.

8BZ is also known for its line of designer caps, which feature similar colors and designs.

Ktoen is a Netherlands-based company, and as a result, the website is almost entirely in Dutch! It’s not very user-friendly for those of us who can’t read the language, but it’s still not all that hard to get around. Ktoen hosts a bunch of colorful, bold designs with a cartoony style. Some of the designs are offered on more than three colorways (!), all of which are vibrant. This isn’t the company for you if you prefer your shirts black or gray! The designs are creative with a whimsical feel — think La Fraise.

Don’t mind dropping $50 on a t-shirt? Like supporting an eco-friendly lifestyle? You’ll like Anti-Eco, a really interesting eco-friendly brand from the US. Unlike many similar labels, the messages on their tees aren’t openly preachy — in fact, they’re quite the opposite. Anti-Eco goes for irony and cheeky humor on their designs, with slogans like “A little radiation brightens my day”.

Of course, all of the shirts themselves are organic cotton and printed with water-based inks. A portion of the price also goes towards the clean up effort in the Gulf, so you know your $$$ are being well-spent on more than just a t-shirt.

Seventh Ink is a US brand started by Matthew Johnson, a guy with a love for graphic design and art. This indie brand has a variety of fun, colorful designs, favoring cartoon-style graphics and logos. Probably won’t be your kind of thing if you prefer the stuff over at Design By Humans or Threadless, but great if you love shirt designs which don’t take themselves quite as seriously. Seventh Ink’s newer stuff is definitely stronger than their older designs, which look more like amalgamations of stock vector graphics than carefully designed pieces.

One thing I still don’t get is why Seventh Ink is located at “furyshirts.com”, which is both misleading and confusing for customers. It also detracts from the brand’s otherwise pristine professionalism.
