Havok is interesting in that it seems to be a straight-up mash of skater clothing and horror tees. The result is surprisingly cohesive, though — a brand-wide color palette helps tie everything together and keep the brand image solid. There are both simple but attractive logo tees and bloody, gory zombie/monster shirts available in a variety of colorways, which is nice. More options are always good! Most Havok shirts are available in some combination of black, silver, turquoise, white, or purple.

The Havok website is also great, featuring a clean, modern design allowing easy access to the store, blog, and a page with information about the current line.

Havok prints on American Apparel tees.

Pop Junkie is a company from Santa Barbara, California, and was started by Aaron Feiger and Ashley Marcinczyk. I’m a huge fan of their creative use of color and halftones and the collage-like style of their designs. Their tees are really vibrant, yet have the muted look of vintage shirts. A lot of their subject matter is rather imaginative and dream-like.

Errorwear is a small outfit dedicated to the reproduction of classic error messages, glitches, and hardware meltdowns on the familiar cotton t-shirt. A must-see for all tech geeks.

I discovered Errorwear a while back and I’ve always loved the idea behind this line of tech-inspired tees. Computer geeks of all colors will recognize the iconic error messages displayed on these shirts, ranging from the infamous BSOD to 404 errors to a Pacman game glitch. The messages are faithfully reproduced, ensuring instant recognition amongst other geeks. They seem to have a focus on the different BSOD messages across the Windows OSes, perhaps owing to the Blue Screen’s ubiquity. Finally, you won’t have to worry about an logo muddying up your proudly worn error message, because the Errorwear folks believe that “YOU ARE NOT [THEIR] BILLBOARD.” This is a message I can get behind, 100%.

A niche brand of reggae from Germany, but rooted firmly in Jamaica. With designs that'll appeal to everyone.

Seen while based in Germany is rooted firmly in the Jamaican reggae scene. “During the time we lived there, we were just constantly blown away by the energy and the creativity people put into music and everything that comes with it – dancing, clothing, etc. – and felt that there’s no brand that visually reflects that vibe in Europe. That’s why we decided to start such a brand on our own back in 2004.”

The site is clean, easy to navigate and the shirts while catering to a niche audience are accessible and expertly crafted, you don’t need to be in their scene, to appreciate their excellent t-shirts. They print in seasons, the 2010 was recently released with features 7 different designs.

Shirts: €32.99 which is probably a little prohibitive to non-Europeans.

Shipping: Free when you order more than 3 shirts, otherwise: Germany: €2.20, Europe: €6.00, Rest of the world: €12.00.

You're History combines famous historical figures/characters with horror/gore tees. The result is not only cohesive, but quite effective. Having designs created by godmachine only helps.

UK-based You’re History smashes up your classic horror/gore style with historical/folklore icons, such as Cleopatra, Rasputin, and Robin Hood. As is expected from the style, each design is rendered with detailed linework, but surprisingly muted colors. The art is beautiful and created by well-known horror artist Godmachine, which instantly gives this brand some t-shirt cred. I like how the style (and the logo font) subtly differs between each tee, which creates a distinction between the historical periods/cultures from which the figures originated.

Prestigious’ motto is “Hand made by human beings”, a mantra they aim to stick to in all stages of their production process. All of their shirts are sweatshop-free (read: American Apparel) and printed in the USA, ensuring that their products are sweatshop-free. They promote humanitarianism and a DIY ethic.

It’s hard to pin Prestigious with a specific style; I can best describe it as elegant and mature, with generally quieter designs. A couple of their older tees feature a great watercolor/collage style, which is very cool. Their most recent line is cleaner and simpler in design. I recommend just checking them out yourself, or taking a look at the sample tees on the left.

I love the idea behind Portland, OR-based Found Item Clothing, whose tees are reproductions of those seen in famous/classic films! The company got its start when (one of?) its founders, Adam, was searching for a replica of the “I Love Toxic Waste” tee in Real Genius, but could find none. He consequently took its creation into his own hands, and ever since Found Item has been creating replicas of vintage movie tees! Many famous films are covered in Found Item’s catalog, and the crew does take requests/suggestions, if you don’t see your favorite movie tee. In addition to these “prop” shirts, they sell licensed vintage band tees and a couple tees by designer brands like Poketo.

Most of their shirts are printed on American Apparel, though I do see a couple other brands floating aroound.

Dream Gold is a young brand out of Toronto with a very strong start. Established in June 2009 by Serji K. and Tara R., Dream Gold bases its tees on the ideas of “well-being and supremacy”. The company hopes to promote a feeling of royalty and wealth, a feeling bolstered by the gold coin and crown motifs decorating their websites.

At present, there are only three designs available. Although each is strong in their own right, they don’t really have much relation to the Dream Gold theme, which is kind of puzzling considering how much the owners try to promote it. Dream Gold also offers a selection of well-designed buttons and — my personal favorite — a batch of custom-made chocolate coins! I just thought this was a genius idea and a great way to sell the brand identity. The coins themselves are rather attractive, too.
