REVIEW: Auk Mini 2

The Auk Mini 2 is a compact indoor growing system designed to make growing plants at home easier and more controlled. It combines the equipment needed to create a suitable growing environment in one neat setup, allowing us to grow plants indoors without having to worry too much about getting all the individual elements right ourselves. It’s aimed at making the growing process more accessible while still giving us plenty of involvement, and after a month of using it, we can say that it has made a very strong impression.

Getting everything set up is relatively straightforward, although this isn’t quite a plug-and-play bit of kit in the traditional sense. There’s a little bit to understand about how the system works and what it needs from us, but once everything is running, the Auk Mini 2 largely gets on with things. That’s one of its biggest strengths. We don’t need to constantly monitor it or make adjustments every five minutes, which makes the whole process considerably more enjoyable.

The first month of growth has been particularly encouraging. We’re not talking about an overnight transformation, and anyone expecting to put the system together and have a fully developed miniature garden a couple of weeks later is going to be disappointed. What we have seen, though, is steady and healthy-looking development, with the plants gradually filling out and the whole thing becoming more interesting to look at as the weeks have passed. There’s something quite satisfying about seeing a setup that initially looks a little sparse gradually turn into a proper growing environment.

The equipment itself also feels suitably premium. This is important because the Auk Mini 2 isn’t cheap, and we’d expect a product at this price to feel substantially better than a basic starter kit. Thankfully, it does. The construction feels solid, the various components fit together well and the overall design has a polished, modern feel. It’s the sort of thing we’re happy to have sitting somewhere visible rather than something we’d want to hide away in a cupboard or utility room.

We’ve also been impressed by how much of the hard work is taken out of the process. Growing anything indoors can involve a fair amount of trial and error, particularly when we’re trying to balance light, water and the general growing environment. The Auk Mini 2 makes the whole experience feel more controlled and predictable, which is particularly useful for anyone who enjoys growing but doesn’t necessarily have the time or experience to constantly fine-tune everything.

There are some downsides. The obvious one is the price. We can’t really gloss over that, because the Auk Mini 2 represents a fairly significant investment compared with simpler growing kits. For someone who only wants to experiment with growing a few plants, there are certainly cheaper ways to get started. We’d also say that the initial setup and learning curve require a little patience, so this isn’t completely effortless from the moment it comes out of the box.

After a month, though, we’re struggling to find much else to complain about. The Auk Mini 2 feels well made, thoughtfully designed and, most importantly, it delivers a genuinely enjoyable growing experience. Seeing the progress over the first few weeks has been the real highlight, and we’re interested to see how things develop over a longer period.

It’s expensive, there’s no getting around that, but the Auk Mini 2 has so far justified the premium for us. The combination of quality hardware, straightforward operation and encouraging early growth makes it a very impressive bit of kit, and we’re looking forward to seeing what the next few months bring.

REVIEW: Nothing Ear (3a) Earbuds

Nothing has built up a pretty strong reputation for making tech that looks and feels a little different from everything else, and the Nothing Ear (3a) earbuds continue that approach nicely. They might not completely reinvent the wireless earbud, but after spending some time with them, we came away pretty impressed by just how much they offer for the money.

The first thing we notice is, unsurprisingly, the design. Nothing has never been afraid to do things differently, and the Ear (3a) follows the company's distinctive aesthetic without becoming too flashy or gimmicky. The charging case is compact, the earbuds are comfortable to wear and the overall build feels reassuringly solid. They're also the sort of earbuds we don't mind leaving on the desk because, unlike a lot of anonymous-looking alternatives, they actually have some personality.

Comfort is particularly important with earbuds, and we found the Ear (3a) easy enough to wear for extended periods. The fit feels secure without putting too much pressure on our ears, although, as always, everyone's ears are different. We had no real problems with them falling out during normal use, making them a good option for commuting, working or simply listening around the house.

Sound quality is another strong point. The Ear (3a) delivers a lively and enjoyable sound that works particularly well with modern music, podcasts and video. There's enough bass to give tracks some weight without completely drowning out the rest of the mix, while vocals remain clear and easy to follow. Audiophiles looking for the ultimate level of detail might want to spend more, but for everyday listening we think these earbuds strike a very appealing balance.

Noise cancellation is also a welcome addition. It won't necessarily match the very best premium earbuds on the market, but it does a good job of taking the edge off background noise. On public transport or in a busy environment, that makes a noticeable difference, and we found ourselves using it regularly rather than treating it as a feature that was there simply for the specification sheet.

Battery life is respectable too, and the case gives us plenty of flexibility between charges. We like the fact that the Ear (3a) doesn't require us to constantly think about battery levels, which is exactly what we want from a pair of everyday wireless earbuds.

There are a few compromises, naturally. The noise cancellation could be stronger, and those looking for the absolute best sound quality will find better options if they're prepared to spend considerably more. But that's really missing the point of the Ear (3a). These are designed to give us a good overall experience without pushing the price into premium territory.

Ultimately, we think Nothing has got the balance pretty much right here. The Ear (3a) look good, sound good, feel comfortable and offer a useful collection of features without making us pay a fortune. They might not be the most technically advanced earbuds we've used, but they are easy to recommend as an enjoyable, stylish and very capable everyday pair.

REVIEW: iPhone Duo

Apple has finally joined the folding phone party, and while it might feel slightly strange seeing the company arrive so late to something that Samsung and others have been doing for years, there is something very Apple about the way the iPhone Duo has been handled. Rather than rushing out a folding iPhone just to tick a box, Apple has clearly taken its time, and the result is a device that feels impressively polished from the moment we pick it up.

Of course, the elephant in the room is that Apple is late. Very late. Foldable phones have been around for several generations now, and we've already seen plenty of clever designs, some of which have become genuinely good everyday phones. That makes the iPhone Duo feel less revolutionary than it perhaps would have been five years ago. We already know what a folding phone can do, and Apple isn't exactly reinventing the concept here.

What it does do, however, is make the whole experience feel very refined. The hardware is beautifully made, as we'd expect from Apple, with a solid, premium feel that makes the Duo feel considerably less like an experimental gadget and more like a proper flagship iPhone. The hinge feels reassuringly sturdy, the displays are excellent and everything fits together with the sort of precision we've come to expect from Apple's hardware.

The folding design itself is also genuinely useful. We get the convenience of a more conventional phone when we need it, while opening the Duo gives us a much larger display for watching video, browsing, working with documents or simply doing two things at once. It's one of those features that can initially feel like a novelty but quickly becomes something we find ourselves using naturally.

There are compromises, though. The Duo is still thicker and heavier than a standard iPhone, and although Apple has done a good job of making it manageable, we never quite forget that we're carrying a folding phone. The crease is also there, even if it is less distracting than we might have expected. After a while, we mostly stop noticing it, but it's difficult to ignore completely when the light catches it at certain angles.

Performance is predictably excellent, with everything feeling fast and responsive, although this is another area where we don't necessarily see a huge leap over Apple's existing high-end iPhones. That's arguably one of the bigger problems with the Duo. It's an impressive piece of hardware, but much of what it offers feels like an evolution of things we've already seen rather than a completely new experience.

One area where Apple has pleasantly surprised us is the price. We went into the iPhone Duo expecting a genuinely eye-watering price tag, particularly given Apple's reputation and the complexity involved in producing a folding phone. It's still an expensive device, obviously, but it isn't quite the financial shock we feared it might be. That makes it considerably easier to recommend, particularly for people who have been waiting specifically for a folding iPhone.

Ultimately, the iPhone Duo feels like Apple arriving late but arriving properly. We can't ignore the fact that the competition has been experimenting with folding phones for years, and some rivals have arguably moved the technology further. But Apple has produced a pleasing, well-made and remarkably polished device that doesn't feel like a first attempt.

Is it essential? Probably not. Is it the most exciting folding phone we've ever used? Again, probably not. But as an iPhone that happens to fold, the Duo is an extremely convincing effort. We might have expected Apple to be late to the party, but at least it has turned up looking smart, confident and considerably less expensive than we feared. Well, almost!

REVIEW: Pixel 11 Pro XL

The Pixel 11 Pro XL is a difficult phone to dislike, but it is surprisingly easy to feel a little underwhelmed by. This is still a flagship smartphone in almost every sense, with a superb display, excellent cameras, strong performance and the clean Android experience that has become a defining part of the Pixel range. Yet after spending time with it, we couldn't shake the feeling that Google has played things rather safe this time around. For a phone carrying the Pro XL name, we were hoping for a little more excitement.

The design remains unmistakably Pixel, and that's both a compliment and a criticism. It is a well-made, premium-looking handset that feels reassuringly expensive in the hand, with a large display and excellent build quality. The familiar camera bar remains a major part of the phone's identity, although there isn't a huge visual difference from previous generations. We like the understated approach, but anyone upgrading from a recent Pixel may struggle to see much reason to get excited about the hardware changes.

The display is one area where the Pro XL continues to impress. The large OLED panel is bright, sharp and smooth, making everything from scrolling through apps to watching video feel properly flagship-grade. Colours look great without appearing excessively punchy, while viewing outdoors is generally very good. We spent plenty of time using the phone for browsing, streaming and photography, and the screen never really gave us anything to complain about.

Performance is similarly dependable. The Pixel 11 Pro XL feels fast in everyday use, whether we're jumping between apps, editing photos or playing games. Google has clearly concentrated on making the phone feel consistently responsive rather than simply chasing benchmark numbers. For most people, there is more than enough power here, although we aren't convinced that performance alone provides much of a reason to upgrade from an older Pro Pixel.

Photography remains one of the biggest reasons to buy a Pixel, and the 11 Pro XL continues that tradition. Images have the familiar Pixel character, with plenty of detail, natural-looking colours and impressive HDR performance. Low-light photography is particularly strong, while Google's computational photography does a lot of the heavy lifting when conditions aren't ideal. We still think the Pixel is one of the easiest phones to point, shoot and get an excellent photograph from, even if the camera system doesn't feel like a revolutionary step forward.

Battery life is another strength. With normal everyday use, we found the Pro XL capable of comfortably getting through a full day, and sensible power management means lighter users should be able to stretch things further. Charging isn't necessarily the fastest we've seen from a flagship, but the overall endurance is dependable enough that we rarely found ourselves worrying about reaching for a charger during the afternoon.

The bigger issue is simply that the Pixel 11 Pro XL doesn't feel dramatically different. That's not the same as saying it's a bad phone, because it absolutely isn't. In fact, the problem is almost the opposite. Everything works well, everything feels polished and there are very few obvious weaknesses. But compared with the leaps and surprises we've seen from some previous Pixel generations, this one feels more evolutionary than exciting.

Ultimately, we came away with the Pixel 11 Pro XL feeling slightly disappointed by the lack of meaningful updates and that elusive wow factor. However, that shouldn't overshadow what is still an excellent flagship. It's a reliable, capable and genuinely enjoyable daily driver, with a fantastic screen, excellent cameras and a polished Android experience. If you're coming from an older phone, there's plenty to like here. For existing Pixel Pro owners, though, we'd be tempted to wait and see what Google does next.

REVIEW: TOZO NC20

There’s something quite appealing about the TOZO NC20. They’re not trying to pretend they’re a premium pair of earbuds costing several hundred pounds; instead, they offer a surprisingly long list of features at a price that makes them a very tempting budget buy. We get active noise cancellation, LDAC support, an accompanying app and, most importantly, a very useful digital display built into the charging case.

The case is probably our favourite part. That little screen shows the battery status of the earbuds and the case, so we can see exactly how much juice we have left without having to open an app or guess from a tiny indicator light. It’s a simple idea, but one that makes a difference when we’re using the NC20s throughout the day. The case is reasonably compact too, and with the earbuds offering around 10 hours of playback with ANC enabled in real-world testing, battery life is one of their strongest points.

Sound quality is good for the money, although we wouldn’t put the NC20 in the same league as genuinely high-end wireless earbuds. There’s plenty of bass and enough detail to make music, podcasts and video enjoyable, but the overall presentation can lack some of the refinement and separation we get from more expensive alternatives. That said, this is exactly where expectations matter. At the NC20’s budget price, we’re getting a perfectly enjoyable listening experience rather than an audiophile one.

The active noise cancellation is another welcome addition. It does a respectable job of taking the edge off background noise, making the TOZO NC20 useful on public transport, in the office or simply when we want to concentrate. It isn’t going to compete with the very best ANC systems, but we’d happily take this level of noise reduction at this price. There’s also a transparency mode when we need to hear what’s happening around us.

Comfort is generally good, with the lightweight earbuds sitting securely enough for everyday use. We found the design fairly conventional, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The controls and app add plenty of flexibility, although some of the extra features can feel like things we’ll play with once before settling on our preferred settings.

Ultimately, the TOZO NC20 makes a strong case for itself because it gets the basics right while throwing in a few features we wouldn’t necessarily expect at this price. The sound isn’t class-leading, the ANC could be stronger and some of the software extras feel unnecessary, but the combination of decent audio, effective-enough noise cancellation, excellent battery life and that genuinely handy battery display makes these a very good budget buy. If we want a capable pair of wireless earbuds without spending a fortune, the NC20s are easy to recommend.

REVIEW: Canyon OnRiff 4

If there’s one thing we like about the Canyon OnRiff 4 headphones, it’s that they know exactly what they are. These aren’t trying to take on Sony, Bose or Sennheiser, and they’re certainly not pretending to deliver audiophile-grade sound. They’re cheap, cheerful, straightforward headphones that get the job done without asking us to spend a fortune.

The OnRiff 4 is a lightweight over-ear design, weighing just 163g, with soft ear cushions and an adjustable headband. They feel reasonably comfortable for longer listening sessions, although the overall construction is inevitably more budget than premium. There’s a little more plastic than we’d find on something considerably more expensive, but that’s hardly a surprise at this price point.

Connectivity is nicely sorted, with Bluetooth 5.3, a range of around 10 metres and support for both SBC and AAC. We also get a 3.5mm connection if we want to go wired, along with USB-C charging. Pairing was straightforward for us, and the physical controls and touch controls make it easy enough to play, pause and adjust our music without reaching for the phone.

Sound quality is probably where we need to keep our expectations realistic. The 40mm drivers produce a perfectly listenable sound, with enough bass to keep things enjoyable and reasonable clarity across podcasts, videos and everyday music. They’re certainly not unpleasant to listen to. However, they lack the refinement, separation and detail we’d expect from more expensive headphones. Push the volume up and things can get a little harsh, while more complicated tracks can sound somewhat congested.

Where the OnRiff 4 does impress us is battery life. Canyon claims up to 50 hours of playback, which is excellent for a budget pair of wireless headphones. There’s also a low-latency gaming mode, a built-in microphone and a foldable design, so Canyon has packed plenty into the asking price.

And that really is the key here: the price. The OnRiff 4 isn't going to win any awards for spectacular sound quality, premium materials or cutting-edge noise cancellation. But that isn't really the point. If we want a cheap pair of wireless headphones for commuting, watching videos, listening to podcasts or throwing into a bag, they make a lot of sense.

The Canyon OnRiff 4 is cheap and cheerful in the best possible way. The sound is decent rather than dazzling, but for the money, we really can't complain. If your expectations are sensible, these are an easy pair of headphones to recommend.

REVIEW: Hilo Blood Pressure Monitor

Keeping tabs on blood pressure usually means sitting down, rolling up a sleeve and strapping an inflatable cuff around your upper arm. It works, but it’s hardly something most of us are going to remember – or want to do – several times a day. The Hilo blood pressure monitor takes a rather different approach, using a lightweight wrist-worn band to automatically monitor blood pressure throughout the day and night.

The first thing we noticed is just how unobtrusive the Hilo Band is. It has no screen and doesn’t constantly buzz, beep or demand attention, so once it’s on the wrist, we can largely forget about it. That’s particularly useful overnight, as Hilo is designed to be worn while sleeping and can capture readings when we’d otherwise have no idea what our blood pressure was doing. The band is also waterproof and has a battery life of around 10–15 days, depending on the version and usage.

Rather than inflating a cuff every time, Hilo uses optical sensors and pulse wave analysis to estimate blood pressure. The important thing here is that it isn’t simply a fitness tracker making an educated guess. The Hilo system has undergone clinical validation, with the original Hilo Band certified as a Class IIa medical device and tested against the ISO 81060-2 standard.

There is, however, still a cuff involved. We need to use the supplied upper-arm cuff for initial calibration and then periodically afterwards – currently every 30 days. That does slightly undermine the appeal of having a completely cuff-free system, but it’s an important part of maintaining the personalised measurements. It also means we can take a conventional, on-the-spot reading when required.

The companion app is arguably where Hilo becomes most useful. Instead of throwing a pile of numbers at us, it presents trends and averages, allowing us to see how blood pressure changes across the day and night. We can also add information about things such as sleep, meals, medication and activity, helping us identify potential patterns. Reports can be exported and shared with a healthcare professional, which is a genuinely useful touch.

There are some caveats. Hilo isn’t a replacement for medical advice, and we wouldn’t use a single wearable reading as the basis for changing medication or making an important health decision. If precise, point-in-time measurements are required, a validated upper-arm cuff remains important. There’s also the ongoing subscription to consider, which makes Hilo considerably more expensive than a basic home blood pressure monitor.

Ultimately, Hilo’s biggest strength is convenience. It turns blood pressure monitoring from something we have to remember into something that happens quietly in the background. For anyone who wants to understand longer-term patterns rather than simply collecting the occasional reading, that’s a compelling proposition. It isn’t cheap, and the monthly calibration and subscription may put some people off, but the combination of discreet hardware, automatic monitoring and a well-presented app makes Hilo a particularly interesting approach to keeping an eye on our blood pressure.

REVIEW: MEATER Pro XL Meat Thermometer

If you take your barbecue and cooking seriously, there’s a good chance you’ve already come across MEATER. The company has built a reputation for making meat thermometers that are considerably smarter than the traditional probe you poke into a steak, and the Pro XL takes that idea and turns everything up a notch. With four wireless probes, built-in Wi-Fi and a rather smart charging hub, it’s designed for people who like to cook a lot of meat at once.

And we mean a lot. The biggest advantage of the Pro XL is, unsurprisingly, those four probes. We can monitor four different pieces of meat simultaneously, each with its own temperature reading and cooking settings. That’s particularly useful when cooking for a group, where everyone wants their steak slightly different, or when you’re juggling a roast, chicken and a couple of other dishes on the barbecue. Each probe contains multiple sensors, allowing the system to monitor both the internal temperature of the meat and the surrounding cooking temperature.

The probes themselves are nicely designed, too. They’re relatively slim, completely wireless and dishwasher safe, while being capable of handling ambient temperatures up to a hefty 550°C. That makes the Pro XL suitable for everything from roasting and smoking to grilling and high-temperature searing. It’s a reassuring level of versatility, although we’d still recommend paying attention to the temperature limits rather than assuming the probes are indestructible.

Then there’s the clever bit. Connect the Pro XL to the MEATER app and we get guided cooking, temperature monitoring, alerts and estimated cooking and resting times. Built-in Wi-Fi means we can also keep an eye on things without having to stay glued to the barbecue. The charging hub has its own OLED display, so we can even check temperatures without reaching for our phone. Better still, the system can operate without a smartphone, which is a welcome touch when we simply want to cook rather than spend the afternoon fiddling with an app.

Battery life is impressive as well. MEATER says a 30-minute charge provides more than 24 hours of cooking, so forgetting to charge the probes the night before isn’t necessarily the disaster it might be with some rivals. USB-C charging for the hub also feels like the right choice for a modern product.

The obvious downside is the price. At £329 in the UK, the Pro XL is a significant investment for what is, fundamentally, a thermometer. If we’re only occasionally cooking a steak or Sunday roast, it’s difficult to justify spending this much when a much cheaper thermometer will tell us whether the meat is cooked.

For keen barbecue enthusiasts, however, the argument is much stronger. The combination of four probes, excellent temperature monitoring, Wi-Fi connectivity and genuinely useful software makes the Pro XL more than just a fancy gadget. It takes away some of the guesswork and, more importantly, lets us concentrate on cooking rather than repeatedly opening the oven or barbecue to check what’s happening.

Ultimately, the MEATER Pro XL is probably overkill for casual cooks, but that’s rather the point. For serious home cooks, barbecue fans and anyone who regularly feeds a crowd, it’s an exceptionally capable bit of kit. It’s expensive, certainly, but the combination of clever technology, excellent build quality and genuine practicality makes it considerably easier to recommend if you’ll actually make use of all four probes.

REVIEW: Canyon HKB-W11 Wireless Keyboard

The Canyon HKB-W11 Wireless Keyboard is one of those products that pleasantly surprised us. At first glance it looks like a much more expensive keyboard, and after spending some time using it, it quickly became clear that Canyon has focused on offering plenty of features without asking for a premium price. If you're after an affordable wireless keyboard for work, studying or general everyday use, this is definitely one worth considering.

The first thing that stood out to us was the build quality. Budget keyboards often feel lightweight and flimsy, but that's not the case here. The HKB-W11 has a reassuringly solid feel, with very little flex in the chassis despite its slim design. The keys are well spaced, the finish looks smart, and overall it feels like a keyboard that's built to cope with daily use rather than being treated as a disposable accessory. It's a great example of a low-cost product that doesn't actually feel cheap.

Typing is comfortable too. The scissor-switch keys have a laptop-style feel, offering short, quiet key travel that's responsive without being overly soft.
