A duct system that is well-designed and properly sealed can make your home more comfortable, energy efficient, and safer.

Comfort

Sealing and insulating ducts can help with common comfort problems, such as rooms that are too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter.

Indoor Air Quality

Fumes from household and garden chemicals, insulation particles, and dust can enter your duct system, aggravating asthma and allergy problems. Sealing ducts can help improve indoor air quality by reducing the risk of pollutants entering ducts and circulating through your home.

Safety

During normal operation, gas appliances such as water heaters, clothes dryers, and furnaces release combustion gases (like carbon monoxide) through their ventilation systems. Leaky ductwork in your heating and cooling system may cause “backdrafting,” where these gases are drawn back into the living space, rather than expelled to the outdoors. Sealing leaks can minimize this risk.

Save Money

Leaky ducts can reduce heating and cooling system efficiency by as much as 20 percent. Sealing and insulating ducts increases efficiency, lowers your energy bills, and can often pay for itself in energy savings. Plus, if you’re planning to install new heating and cooling equipment, a well-designed and sealed duct system may allow you to downsize to a smaller, less costly heating and cooling system that will provide better dehumidification.

Protect the Environment

Energy used in our homes often comes from the burning of fossil fuels at power plants, which contributes to smog, acid rain, and climate change. Simply put, the less energy we use in our homes, the less air pollution we generate. By sealing your ducts and reducing the amount of energy necessary to comfortably heat or cool your home, you can reduce the amount of air pollution generated.

Oregon, Washington Air Force reservists still await pay, discharge documents, almost three months after return:

I saw a member of our armed forces in the grocery store today and being that memorial day has just passed I felt confident in reaching out to this soldier and thanking him for his service to our country and protecting the liberties that we all hold dear.

I have never served in the military and do not have a basis to judge what soldiers go through in war nor would I. These ladies and gentlemen give everything of themselves for you, me and everyone else in this crazy country of ours. Their dedication to me and everyone else is unwavering.

I read this article today, and I was embarrassed. I was embarrassed for thanking a man for putting his life on hold to serve and protect me, and all I can do is offer my thanks? As a nation we can’t even pay our soldiers on time. We should be welcoming these folks home with open arms and assisting them; promptly, in anyway we can!

I love The United States of America, I respect and I am in awe of the service that our troops provide for us. I just wish when I shake a man’s hand and say “Thank you” , I had the confidence in my country to treat them with the respect that they have earned.

Douthit Thermal has expanded their insulation services to include injection foam insulation. The primary target market for this type of foam insulation is in a retro-fit wall injection.

Douthit R-foam is versatile. It can be used to re-insulate older homes that contain little or no insulation, even if the wall cavity is partially filled with old, ineffective insulation. Douthit R-Foam does what others cannot, flowing through empty space and across old material to fill the wall cavity. Douthit R-Foam can be injected into the wall cavity from either the interior or from the exterior of the home. It can even be installed behind existing brick.

R-Foam is biodegradable and excess foam is easily cleaned up and disposed of. R-Foam is a Class A building material and meets or exceeds all testing requirements of current building standards.

R-Foam foam solves the problem of drafty walls in poorly insulated homes. R-Foam is non-expanding injection foam that can be injected into walls of existing homes. It can be installed from the inside through the drywall or from the outside through the exterior siding or brick.

R-foam benefits include:
30-40% higher resin content resulting in higher foam density
Lower water content, meaning less moisture in wall cavity
Formulated with chemical cross linkers, meaning less foam shrinkage
Contains 3 EPA Listed Antifungal Additives
Literature that complies with the FTC consent decree for residential insulation products
Product testing that meets code requirements (R-Foam does not use test results borrowed from other products)
Class 1 Fire Rating when tested at the code-mandated foam thickness of 4-inches nominal (3.5 inches actual)
R-value 4.6 per inch@ 75 degrees

Purchasing a home is the single largest investment you will likely ever make in your lifetime and making sure you have picked the right builder is very important. Researching building professionals, requesting referrals from previous clients and asking the right questions will not only protect your investment but begin the journey of bringing your new home to life.

By asking a home builder the following questions, you will have a better understanding of the steps involved and decisions you will make during construction and give you confidence in the builder you have selected.

How long have you been in business and in that time how many homes have you built?
Are you licensed (where required) and insured? (Required of all HBA members!)
Can you provide me with references from previous home buyers?
Is there a model home I can tour? If not, can you help me make an appointment to see a home you built for another customer?
What are the most important benefits of the homes you build and how would you compare yourself to other builders in this price range?
What type of warranty do you offer?
Do you build only from home plans you supply or can I provide my own set of plans?
What are the major energy-saving features in your homes?
What are the standard features in your homes and what options and upgrades are available to me?
What is the process for making changes or upgrades throughout the construction process?
Who will supervise the construction of my home and who should I contact with any questions I may have?
How often will I have access to the home during the building process?
How and when will the final price for my home be determined?
Does the community have a Home Owners Association and/or an Architectural Review Committee and may I get a copy of their rules and regulations as well as the amount of any fees?
How long will it take to complete my home?
What is the process for inspection at key points of construction, at final walk-through, and to address any matters that need to be corrected or finalized?

Many experts agree this list is a great starting point in finding the right professional to build your home – and you’ll probably have other questions to ask once you start the process.
