I am the first to admit that I am not a regular reader of poetry. I probably don't even qualify as an irregular reader of poetry. So is it a complement to the author of this wonderful collection that I loved every one of her poems? I hope it is, for the writing here speaks directly to me, lifts me up and moves me to a different place, and would not have the slightest ability to do so were it necessary for me to decode it first. And frankly, I have no doubt that sophisticated readers of poetry will find the same to be true for them.

I barely have any favorites among the riches here, though I am partial to My Body, which I find astonishingly honest and playful and so human. And the poems about drinking, relationships, love, mothers, fathers, brothers, loss, grief. I want to know more about each person and place and time and incident she writes about because each touches me.

I desperately wanted to like this. As a continuation of the Mars story line, i was ready to dive head first into it.

But within just a few pages it was so full of errors that I'm not sure how anyone could ignore them.

It was a Beretta planted on Weevil. Not a Glock.

The Car Keith and Sachs was in did NOT explode. Sachs likely died from blunt force trauma, not an explosion. Nor was it a van that hit them.

Keith's injuries, while severe, didn't indicate the brain trauma they're pushing in the book. He did not have trouble speaking when Veronica was in the room with him and his memory certainly didn't appear to be damaged either.

Also, why would Mac just up and quit her job? There's no reason she still couldn't do consulting for Veronica and still have a job, maybe leaving when things got better.

Gia's last name isn't Goodwin either.

Novel tie ins that screw up the facts as we've been given them irk me to no end. Especially when single viewing of the movie could have corrected all of it.

The writing itself was weak... I've read better put together fan fic. I never felt like I was reading these characters I've come to know and love... but some slightly skewed version of them. It felt like the author was just trying too hard. The thing with the series and the movie was that it flowed well... rarely did it feel like either was struggling, specially when it came to dialogue.

Thank God they didn't use this for the movie. I would have been so disappointed.

Since Veronica's return to Neptune and work as a private investigator, her life has settled into a regular rhythm of Daddy-Daughter dinners (now including Logan, recently returned from his latest deployment), co-running Mars Investigations, and continuing to strive to be the biggest thorn possible in Sheriff Dan Lamb's side. For if there is one constant in Neptune, it's the corruption under-pinning the city's veneer of wealth and respectability. Riding high on the success of Weevil's exoneration, she and her father begin to brainstorm how to take Weevil's case further, transforming him into a symbol of the systemic corruption in the sheriff's department. But Veronica's latest solo success has gained her a measure of notoriety, and the offer of a (lucrative) solo job investigating possible fraudulent insurance claim against the Neptune Grand Hotel.

Grace Manning (fans of the show will remember her as the younger sister of Meg, featuring in the "Donut Run" episode), the victim of a vicious rape, was left with no memories of the attack, until memories began to resurface and she accused a Neptune Grand employee. The deeper Veronica digs, the more she begins to realize that Grace's attack may be the tip of the iceberg. Driven by her own demons, Veronica digs ever deeper, determined to stop a monster from hurting one more girl -- but the cost may be more than she's willing to pay, as her drive to succeed threatens to disrupt the fragile balance she's achieved since returning to Neptune.

Following the release of the Kickstarter-backed film, I was thrilled when Rob Thomas furthered his commitment to Veronica Mars with the promise of a series of original novels. The first, The Thousand Dollar Tan Line, was a fabulous addition to the world of the show, sliding seamlessly into place as a literary extension to the film world. I sped through Thomas and Graham's first collaboration and was immediately left wanting more -- but concerned that lightning this good surely couldn't strike twice. Book versions of beloved television shows aren't supposed to be this compulsively readable and addictive. But I was -- no surprise -- wrong.

Mr. Kiss-and-Tell is vintage Veronica Mars, delving deep into the seedy underbelly society and stripping away the glossy veneer of Neptune's culture of wealth and privilege. This book is everything I want in a Mars story - dark, twisty plotting, razor-sharp characterizations, nail-biting suspense, and a healthy dose of Logan-related relationship goodness. With a serial rapist as the focus of the central case, this book is necessarily darker in tone, and though difficult at times to read it fits with Veronica's noir-tinged history. This is especially true in how the case is resolved -- when it comes to crime in Neptune, life -- and justice -- is rarely as black-or-white as one might like, instead often meted out in shades of gray.

Woven throughout Veronica's investigation are the wonderful character moments that have come to define the series. Where the first novel focused on Veronica's relationship with Keith, this novel's primary relational focus is on her renewed romance with Logan. The exploration of the struggles facing military couples was brutally real and honest, and I absolutely adore where this series of novels is taking these characters that I love so much -- it's the next best thing until the next film, eh Rob Thomas? )

Veronica's relationship with Logan is a piercing ray of light in her shadowy world. It's a hope this natural born cynic with a marshmallow-soft heart will need to survive in the ever-evolving world of Neptune's criminal and social whirl. This series is a masterclass in how to do tie-in fiction right -- compelling stories, pitch-perfect characters, and chilling suspense -- and I need more, as the opportunity to live within Veronica's world for a brief span will never, ever grow old.
I'm going to assume if you're reading this, you're a fan of the series and you've seen the movie. (Or should I say *first* movie, on the assumption there will be more?) The book picks up a couple of months after the movie left off, with Logan deployed and Veronica having decided to forget about a law career in New York and stay in Neptune to go back to her addiction, PI work.

Keith is still recovering from the serious car crash and there are nothing but crickets for Mac and Veronica at Mars Investigations. But then the Chamber of Commerce hires them to investigate the spring break disappearance of a college girl, since it's become a national cause celèbre, bad for Neptune's businesses, and Sheriff Lamb is clearly not competent to do the job.

Just as in the series and the movie, Veronica dives in, calling on her cadre of friends, like Mac and Wallace, to help out with legwork and the high-level technical stuff. The mystery is on a par with what we're used to, with the added benefit of a major plot twist that Veronica runs into during the investigation and that rocks her back on her heels.

As a book, of course this was somewhat less heavy on the dialog than a film/TV script. That makes sense, but it did mean there wasn't quite as much of that snarky patter that we all love. It's there, definitely, just less of it. The big thing for LoVe 'shippers is that since Logan is deployed, he's not as big a factor as you'd like. But his absence gives Veronica a chance to think hard about all the changes in her life and their implications, and for Veronica and Keith to deal with them.

Although I'd preordered the book, when I found out that the audiobook was read by Kristen Bell, I had to have it. It was like all those nights watching the show, to have Kristen Bell's voice in my ear, reading the story. Of course she's great as herself, but she's surprisingly good at giving voices to all the other characters.

The verdict It's not a pony, but it's a good gift.

This was my favorite for a 'fun" read. The heroine Judith seemed to me to be the primary focus of the work, rather than Rannulf, which was a little disappointing since I prefer stories of "heroes". Judith's character is a typical & standard character - a penniless middle daughter of a lower member of the gentry with a spoiled only son who hasn't a clue about life and is bankrupting the family. She is sent off to be a poor relation/unpaid servant in an aunt's household that consists of the quintessential ton females and males- scheming, self-centered and soulless. One of the things which makes this a memorable story is the one character "flaw" Judith has; an inherited acting talent acquired by her grandmother that no one in the family wants known about. Although she is paired with Ranulf - the "fun" member of the family that looks like a viking warrior & who also has been "wandering" through life not certain of where he fits in or what his destiny holds, there are large segments of the story that do not include him except as a support character. They met when her coach has an accident and he rescues her. She pretends to be someone she isn't in a last ditch try to create a positive memory that will carry her through the long years of spinsterhood she foresees as her future. a fantasy week-end neither expects to continue beyond the moment. The fun begins when it is made known that Rannulf is the man chosen by his grandmother to marry Judith's self-serving cousin. There are four different stories working through this one chapter- Rannulf & Judith, Judith vs her Aunt and Cousins, Judith & reckless brother and Judith allied with her grandmother, the actress, which leads to complex interactions, a steady pace and jumping from one situation to another- although for me, much of the story line was predictable.
Another of the things that made this a fun read were the facets of Rannulf's life the writer lets us see. His acceptance of his unsettled lifestyle; his ability to find humor in some weird situations; his personal knowledge that something out there is waiting for him, he just has to find it; and his strong sense of right and wrong, of self and of family support which is characterized through Ms. Balogh's work. I adore "bad boys" who make real "good men".

I've been in "Reader's Desert" lately, began searching backlists and happened upon this one I hadn't read. Nice find.

Judith is on her way to life as a poor relation. Rannulf is on his way to visit his grandmother who is backing him into a marriage he doesn't want. Rainy, muddy, stagecoach overturns, along comes a knight who carries Judith away for a day and two nights of fantasy. She's now Claire Campbell, actress, and he's Ralph. After their dreamy interlude, it's back to the real world.

They're both shocked to find they are now neighbors and the chick who Rannulf's grandmother has lined up for him is Judith's relative. There have to be a number of twists and turns enroute to an hea. Otherwise, there would be no story. And the story was entertaining. I liked it.

I enjoyed this book in series but I just couldn’t buy heroine’s totally throwing herself into an affair with no thought of consequences or possibility of conception occurring. This is Regency England and she is a self effacing rector’s daughter. I’m not saying it’s inconceivable, I just found this a weak part of plot. On the other hand, the author must be found of the Brontes as we have a poor parson living in country surrounded by vast open country with a son named Bamwell who is a spoiled wastrel of a spendthrift. This along with 4 sisters...... shades of Bronte home life!
I've been a fan of Mary Balough's work for some time now and have read several of her books because she can generally be relied on to write emotionally satisfying books. The first book in the Bedwyn Saga, Slightly Married, was quite good with a nice mix of tension and romance between an angst ridden war hero and a strong, assertive, self-possessed widow living in straightened circumstances. In fact, I so enjoyed the first book, I quickly bought this book, the second in the series about the 6 Bedwyn siblings.

Oh, how I wish I could say that I enjoyed this book as much as the first, but I cannot. The hero was fairly well adjusted if a bit aimless and undisciplined. The heroine, was too willing to accept the judgements, strictures dictates and demands of others, especially those of her father and her aunt. Yes, I understand that times were such that women hand almost no personal or political rights, but they had still voices and some marginal degree of self determination. Any woman who is willing to have a consensual sexual encounter over a period of 2 days with a total stranger is surely capable of being more assertive with those who treat her like a disliked poor relation and glorified servant.

There was nothing in the dialog that convinced me of the 'chemistry' between Rannulf (Ralf) and Judith. There was little in the action that created tension and for this reader, the near absence of tension resulted in boredom. The resolution to the bit of tension around Bran, Judith's brother, was too easily handled and quickly forgotten. I found Ralf entirely too willing to allow Judith to run from him time and time again without so much as cross word or hurt feelings. Finally, I wearied of Judith's self-flagellation over the problems she encountered. Many of her problems were not of her making but she persisted in blaming herself. That is a trait that I cannot abide.

Bottom line I found this book very "putdownable." Had this book been the first in the series, I'm fairly certain I wouldn't not have moved to the second book. Whether or not I read the third book in the series is still up for debate.

Cliffhanger: Well, the series continues...

I remember reading this one, i even remember reviewing it here and now the review has magically disappear from my lists. This is not the first time this has happened...whatev!!

Having this problem caused me to go back to this book and i had forgotten how much i love these characters, so i re-read it again and again, hehehe.

Ally is having one hell of a time in her pack, so when her protector manages it to save her, she all but jumps at the chance. Now she is in a new pack where Seers are not just not welcome but hated and with reason, but she makes sure that everybody gets to know her and not what she can do. So little by little everybody starts thawing around her, specially Derren...

Derren hates Seers but with Ally he learns that no matter what people can do, they can always choose to do the right or wrong thing and what happened to him was because that person was mean and it had nothing to do with being a Seer, and everything to do with the person.

There are some people trying to take the Mercury and Phoenix pack and Ally helps them by having visions.

One thing i didn't like was that Trey wasn't as much there, he was mentioned, he talked, but it was like he was just passing through...it didn't strike me like i was reading Trey's character, but oh well, maybe there was reason, i hope!

Anyway, loved the book, can't wait to read more about this series...highly recommended!

Spiral of Need is book one in the Mercury Pack series and is Derren and Ally’s story. We were introduced to the majority of these characters in the Phoenix Pack series. Carnal Secrets is book 3 in that series and tells the story of how the Mercury Pack was formed. I personally believe you should read the other series before beginning this one in order to better understand who all the characters are. The Phoenix and Mercury Packs are close with one another and even share a couple of members. This isn’t explained in much detail at all in this book, but because I’ve read the other series I knew who everyone was.

Derren is Beta wolf of the Mercury Pack. When he was a youth, he was wrongly accused and charged for a crime he did not commit. He owes a favor to Cain, another shifter who he was in juvenile detention with. The favor is to watch over Ally who is someone Cain has been close to since he was a child. Derren is leery of Ally at first because she is a seer. He and members of his pack have had bad experiences with other seers who abused their powers and used them for the wrong reasons. Ally is a strong dominant wolf. She understands that many don’t trust or like seers, but it hurts her nonetheless when others assume she can’t be trusted. I liked Ally immediately and thought she was perfect for Derren.

There are a couple of things going on in this story that cause conflict. I liked how the packs come together and works as a whole to resolve the problems.
This is a great romance and a great wolf shifter action story. There are two main plots, and one of them is something I've wondered about before. In this universe, shifters have fated mates. Sometimes they don't meet, though. As this author writes it, the shifters can fall in love with someone and become so close they imprint and mate. Some think it is wrong not to wait for their fated mate and so resist imprinting and don't think well of others who imprint. This story starts with a female wolf shifter who was in a relationship and maybe almost imprinted, but her lover then met his fated mate and left her. She was adult about it and stepped aside with no interference in the mating. But, the new mate is out to get her--she totally ruins the life of her mate's old flame. This is one of the main conflicts of the story and I really like how it was handled in the story. I loved how crazy the bad female was, and she really managed to cause a lot of problems. Don't worry though, there is a new male for our abandoned lady wolf and I like him much better than the one she gave up.
If you have read the Phoenix Pack series you will recognize a lot of characters and get to see what is happening with them.
It is a great action story and especially a romance.

There are some people trying to take the Mercury and Phoenix pack and Ally helps them by having visions.

One thing i didn't like was that Trey wasn't as much there, he was mentioned, he talked, but it was like he was just passing through...it didn't strike me like i was reading Trey's character, but oh well, maybe there was reason, i hope!

Anyway, loved the book, can't wait to read more about this series...highly recommended!

I don't get the hype...The writing is Kristen's style, great alpha males and interesting, sassy women, with immediate attraction. When I say immediate, I mean Hank lays his eyes on Roxie and knows she is it...he's taking her out, sleeping with her and moving her into his house in two weeks. Not to mention laying his life on the line for all her drama, but the books just don't deliver.

I don't have a problem with a fast moving plot or a premise that is less than realistic. I think where the book loses me is in the development of the series. I literally felt like from book 2 on felt interchangeable and certainly not something I would re-read. They aren't terrible, I just don't think they are as good as some of the other series. I'm glad I saved these for last, if I had read them first I don't think I would have gone any further with Kristen's books.

I respect the time, thought and energy a writer puts into their books. I cannot imagine the time spent on storyline, character development and voice. I have re-read Motorcycle Man more than once and love the Colorado series. Not to say there isn't some reptative vehicles (kidnapping) in that series, but I adore the characters and the story lines. That is one steamy series that grabs ahold of you!

I laughed, I cried (on the train...avoiding eye contact with fellow passengers) and I loved every minute of it. Is it freaky that my two favourite parts are -

1. When she is at her worst and needs saving. That it's Vance (who saves her) may have something to do with it. He's all hot, intense and thoughtful.

2. When Hank loses it and yells at her for putting her life in danger. The fact that she stepped in front of danger to protect him and her loved ones made it even more epic in my mind.

I think it's the emotions portrayed that made them my favourite parts.

Even though Roxie feels so bad about herself (at that particular moment), seeing the care and protection she received made me feel tight in my chest. If I was in the same situation, I would want someone looking out for me when I'm at my worst.

Hank's reaction to screaming at Roxie seemed very real. I loved that someone so "in control" lost it so epically. I know that I'm guilty of screaming at my kids when they risk their health and wellbeing. I want my kids to be happy and safe at all times and I think this was why Hank yelled.

Hank is the serious one in the group. He seems to watch everything going on around him and observe the proceedings. When it's needed, he says what needs to be said. Sometimes, even he can't control his actions and reactions. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when he lost it. I'm pretty sure he would be EXTREMELY passionate.

Roxie's love for fashion and dressing up I can totally relate to. Her need to always present herself in the best light is something I (try to) do as well. I can't remember the last time I left my house without lipstick on and my hair not done.

Honestly, I do struggle a little with the way the Rock Chicks push away their men...for their man's benefit. Hello...if the hot bunch guy is up for the challenge, go with the flow.

Rock Chick Redemption is about finding the love of your life and finding the person who will put up with you through the good and the bad. No love is perfect and nobody is perfect.

As per usual...the Rock Chick gang makes Rock Chick Redemption fun and interesting. I want my own Rock Chick gang...and a Hot Bunch too.

For some reason, the odd numbers in this series are my favourite. (Rubbing my hands together in delight) Luke and Ava are up next.
Ok, so all great things have to come to an end, right? I really wanted to love this book but I just couldn't. It's not that I did not like it, I just did not love it. This book is too much like the second one involving Jet and Eddie. After a while, the complaining, scared female characters get a little boring and very predictable. My issue with this book is that it is really too much like the second one. I also take issue that the Nightingale investigators/posse are attracted to the female characters because it makes me feel like they are not as valued as say the main primary cast. But I'm very excited to read the next book since that same posse of Ben will get their own lead roles. Overall I would say out of the three books, this is the one I liked the least. But it's sort of a necessary evil (evil is too strong a word but I did not have a substitute) since you have to read this one prior to moving to the fourth book.

Easy to understand with helpful Bible verses.
This is an excellent book about our unlikely "weapons" available to us in this world. It is a must read!
This book has been an amazing read. Pastor Nickel is very concise and clear on the practical applications of faith lessons in our lives and how such living wards off negativity and despondency, connecting us to our Holy God and each other. It is a "must read" for Christians who are serious about living their faith every day.

I have a lot of difficulty with this book as there are several glaring errors in continuity, and the electronic version I had contained several grammatical and spelling errors. It really took away from the plot. I like the characters, and I like the premise, but I had trouble with the execution.
Once again, Tonya Kappes has hit a bull's eye. In this short Halloween story Mr. Prince Charming takes over the reins. It is a story about love and just makes you feel good all over. It is the treat in trick or treat. I think on the day I would like to be in June's town!!! Get this book....it is well worth the low price!!
I love Tonya's Magical Cures Mystery series, and this one was definitely not a disappointment. Even though it's a short story, I did not feel like I was short-changed as I do with some short stories that try to cram too much into a few pages and make you feel like there was something missing when it's done. This was a great read and I was very satisfied with the ending. Thanks Tonya - and keep 'em coming!
How Distracted Did I Get??

A Charming Potion is a fun quick read! The Magical Cures Mysteries are as addictive as coffee...yep I said it! It's true. This one is perfect for your lunch break and still has a cliffhanger leaving you wanting more. Do not read this book until you have read her first 2 books in the Magical Cure Series A Charming Crime then A Charming Cure. June is a fun quirky character I can't get enough of! This story is a must not miss in the Magical Cure Series.
A Charming Potion by Author Tonya Kappes is truly a short story with a lot of powerful punch to it! June Heal with her faithful guardian cat Mr. Prince Charming and snarky crystal ball guide Madame Torres along with the enchanting residents of Whispering Falls once again make up the cast of characters for Kappes' beloved cozy mystery book series. The characters the author has created are so endearing to the reader and described using vibrant details that one can't help but be drawn into the mystical world Author Tonya Kappes has created. Once you read one of the Magical Cures Mystery Series books, you feel compelled to read them all!
Great little story, can be read without reading the other 2 in the series, but better after having read them. Love and Halloween and June Heal, what could possibly go wrong? Slight edit - about 41% thru the kindle edition, she refers to Ravens sister as Hili instead of Faith. Any book you see by Tonya Kapppess read it- its going to be good
I've wanted to read Tonya Kappes book for awhile now. I took a shot at reading this novella, even with the warning that I shouldn't because of possible spoilers. Well, whatever. I'm not sure what spoilers I should have found. I thought this was a perfect book to introduce me to Tonya and her writing world of June Heal and Whispering Falls.

A Charming Potion is a cute short read, which gave me a pretty good insight into who June Heal is. June is a sweet twenty-five-year old, who is funny, quirky, has a good heart, and a MASSIVE love/addiction to Ding Dongs. You gotta love a girl who loves her some chocolate.

As mysteries goes, I don't think this book really had one but I got something else out of it instead. Something that I wasn't expecting. If you're a fan of this series, then I'm pretty sure you're going to love what's going to happen. If you're new to the series like me, then this book is going to give you a little idea of what's in store for you. I'm looking forward to reading more books from Tonya

Generally speaking, spy/war/espionage novels are among my favorites. I was intrigued by the premise of the book, that being the future war in the Middle East and thought this sounded like a great book. However, I was put off from the beginning by the over-the-top characters and the minute details of battle. Every character seemed to get worse as I read on until I finally stopped roughly half way. I stopped and started the book several times determined to give it a fair shake, but it is just not my cup of tea.

If your are into rough, tough Rambo characters and highly detailed battle descriptions, you will like this book. Sorry, I just could not get into it.

The Profession A Thriller Steven Pressfield 9780385528733 Books Reviews

Without delving into spoilers or a full-blown synopsis, this book was as much a psychological thriller as an action piece. So many of the elements parallel the stories of Caesar and Alcibiades, and are even explicitly referenced several times, yet the sheer scope of the parallel was somehow lost on me until the entire story wrapped up.

Virtually every major piece of this story has a parallel---literal or symbolic---in the stories of Caesar and the fall of the Roman Republic, and/or Alcibiades and the fall of the Athenian Democracy, from the external conflicts, the American political climate, even the widespread rise of mercenary armies (hint Marian Reforms)

Some of the negative reviews I saw (typically less than a paragraph long) either completely and utterly missed the symbolism, or just didn't care much about it. One of them seemed completely incapable to separate the author from the book's setting, somehow thinking this dystopian future is what Pressfield actually believes.

Some of the more sophisticated negative reviews do have good points; the pacing is odd, and in some cases (particularly towards the end) horrendous; an event that took place less than 10 pages earlier, with no chronological exposition, is described as having happened more than a week ago.

A very nice callback was also in the book, in the form of Gent recalling lessons from his previous mentor, one Vaughn Telamon of Arcadia, Mississippi. If you've read "Tides of War" you'll get it right away.

Along with Pressfield's usual Warrior Ethos theme that occurs in virtually all his previous works, he introduces a new theme that could be badly simplified into "reincarnation" or some degree of "persistant self through history", as it is heavily implied that Gent is re-playing a role "he" has played countless times throughout history, complete with the prologue re-playing itself later on. This is played even greater and more bluntly with Jim Salter, who mentions his personal philosophy involving his position at "the intersection of Necessity and Free Will", which is an instant HEY I RECOGNIZE THAT for anyone who's read "Tides of War" Perhaps stretching this theme a bit, this could be seen as a "sequel" of sorts to "Tides of War".

Ultimately, though, the book is simply too well crafted and narrated for its flaws to drag it down, and if Pressfield never wrote a work of fiction ever again, this would be a spectacular conclusion to his books.
This is really a book with two story lines. The first and obvious presentation examines the potential for military contractors (glorified mercenaries) working for the world's largest banks and multinationals to displace nation state militaries for everything short of all out war. Pressfield injects a good deal of military jargon and creates a false history between today and the mid-21st century when the events of the novel take place. This portion is well done, exhibiting Mr. Pressfield's clear understanding of how militaries operate, and who controls the world. In it -- he also explores the nature of men at war, absent the notion of patriotism. This portion is handled a bit heavy-handedly, and with rather too little subtlety. There is lots of dialogue about it, with troopers actually discussing the issue among one another. This 'band of brothers' ethos and mentality is not often spoken of by actual soldiers -- it is something felt, acknowledged by action, but not openly discussed, especially by seasoned soldiers. Its understood, not analyzed. This is the reason I docked Mr. Pressfield a star (he handled this topic ever so much better in Gates of Fire -- a must read!).

The second theme is a warning about America's political trajectory, drawing the obvious parallels to Rome in the final years of the Republic. The narrative is essentially a recreation of Caesar's crossing the Rubicon and assuming control of Rome, effectively ending the Republic and ushering in the rule of the dictator and eventually the Empire. Again, a bit direct, Pressfield actually connects the dots for us by having the characters argue over the actual analogy to Rome, so not much is left to the reader's imagination -- but very effective and artfully constructed. Unfortunately, this is not likely to be the kind of book that wakes up the nation, but it is well done and spot on.

Lauren Olamina isn’t like the other kids in her neighborhood, a walled-off city block in Robledo, just twenty miles outside of Los Angeles. PARABLE OF THE SOWER is Lauren’s journal (of a sort). Begun on the eve of her 15th birthday and concluding more than three years later, through her diary we witness the collapse of Lauren’s fragile world. In a country wracked by poverty, climate change, mass unemployment, homelessness, drug abuse, class warfare, and unspeakable violence, Lauren’s small community is a fortress of sorts. Though they’re far from well-off, the diverse neighborhood manages to produce enough food and goods (and occasionally for-pay labor) to sustain itself. The residents put personal animosity aside to protect and care for one another: rotating night watches keep would-be thieves at bay; when one resident’s garage catches fire, everyone becomes a firefighter; and Lauren’s step-mom Cory schools the neighborhood kids in her own home, since it’s too dangerous to venture outside the walls.

It’s not much, but it’s home. But even at the tender age of 15, Lauren can see it unraveling: “We’ll be moved, all right. It’s just a matter of when, by whom, and in how many pieces.” (page 136)

After a series of blows – the disappearance of Lauren’s father; several successful infiltrations by thieves; a fire that claims all but one member of its household – Lauren’s community finally falls. Drugged out on “pyro,” a group of painted arsonists torch the neighborhood, killing and raping its residents. Lauren is just one of three to escape. Along with Zahra – the youngest of Richard Moss’s wives – and fellow teenager Harry, they hit the road in search of water and work. A safe place to pitch their (proverbial) tent. And, for Lauren, a safe haven in which to establish the very first Earthseed community.

PARABLE OF THE SOWER is a must read. A straight-up masterpiece. Originally published in 1993, it’s still painfully relevant – and painfully realistic – today. (Even as the gap between present and future has narrowed to a scant ten years; PARABLE OF THE SOWER takes place between July 20, 2024 and October 1, 2027.) Butler weaves together myriad social and environmental justice issues into a powerful social critique that feels neither forced nor preachy. Antebellum slavery, indentured servitude, police abuse, sundown towns, the underground railroad, the conflict between security and privacy, the privatization of public resources, polygamy, human trafficking, sexual slavery, child rape, border wars, water scarcity, passing as male – all of these and more merit a mention (or sometimes many mentions) in PARABLE OF THE SOWER.

Butler’s also created a cast that’s not only incredibly diverse – but also mostly lacking in white protagonists. (How refreshing!) In this future America, racism is alive and well: neighborhoods often segregate themselves according to race, making Lauren’s mixed-race home an anomaly. (Lauren is black, with half-brothers who are of African American and Mexican American descent.) As her mixed-race, mixed-gender group of refugees/would-be converts trek through California, they earn more than their fair share of suspicious stares. In a world where people distrust those who don’t look like them, Lauren’s community’s principle of “we all look out for each other” is a source of confusion – and not a little hostility.

After finishing PARABLE OF THE SOWER, I was angry – angry that I wasn’t taught Butler in high school, right alongside Atwood and in lieu of the half dozen+ works of Shakespeare I labored through. (Someone please tell me this has changed?) My first Butler book was LILITH’S BROOD, which I loved; PARABLE OF THE SOWER is even better! I think I was more easily able to relate to the characters and the situations in which they found themselves minus the alien elements of LILITH’S BROOD. PARABLE OF THE SOWER is just a more accessible and easily-imaginable story.

I was worried that I might be put off by the more religious aspects of the EARTHSEED series, which is one reason why I put off reading it. Instead, I found Lauren’s new religion rather enchanting, and well in keeping with my own beliefs. (Two words: starstuff and dust.) More of a philosophy than a religion per se, Earthseed posits that the ultimate truth is change: everything changes. Change is constant. Change is unstoppable. Sometimes we can mold change; other times, change molds us. Rather than fight change, shape it when you can; when you can’t, bend to its will as needed. God is not a person; rather, God is change personified. Because a humanoid deity is what people have come to expect from their religion, Lauren makes the tactical decision to give it to them. Fellow traveler Bankle describes Lauren’s new religion as a blend of Buddhism, existentialism, and Sufism.

Just as God is change, Heaven is the stars: it is Earthseed’s destiny to travel to the stars and settle other planets in the universe. Humanity’s past is here on Earth; its future is there in the stars. As much as I love the idea, this is where I must part ways with Earthseed: humans have already destroyed one planet, and I’d rather not see it do the same to any others.

PARABLE OF THE SOWER gets 200 billion stars: one for each star in the Milky Way.

This is one of those books that was so gripping, I didn't want to put it down, and also was so *scary* I sometimes needed to. It's not meant as a horror book, but whereas most apocalyptic dystopia fantasy novels feel like some far away idea, the author clearly researched the environmental effects of global warming and created a projected societal breakdown that is INTENSELY realistic-feeling.

As a child-bearing aged woman with extremely limited survival skills, this book got me feeling like I should learn some basic self defense, or how to start a fire, or shoot a gun, to teach my children in case we end up in this warped world that feels just a few steps away from the reality we live in currently.

The characters are rich and dimensional. A lot of their history and personality shines in their dialogue and responses to various situations. What a great book, I can't wait to start the second part of this series!
Forget 1984, Butler's Earthseed series are the books one should read to get insight into our world today. Written in the mid-1990's about the 2020's and 2030's they tell the story of a world not unlike the one we live in today. Corporate influence is suborning and even sublating government authority. A dissolute population turning inward with drugs and virtual entertainment and outward with violence and suspicion towards the 'other'. Those who can, build walls to keep the 'other' out. Sometimes the walls work, but inevitably they fail.

Amid all this two leaders arise one, a demagogue playing on the nation's fears and religious sensitivities promising to 'make America great again' (the author's words in 1993, mind you) convinces a large swath of the population to turn against those who don't conform even as his 'Crusaders' commit atrocities in his name (but never of course with his *official* sanction).

The other is a young, very precocious black woman with a vision to transcend human misery and build a community to seek humankind's Destiny. Barely escaping with her life when her once solid middle-class neighborhood is overrun by a violent gang, she sets off on a trek through a country that is much like ours if things were just a little more desperate, a little more divided, and a lot less caring. It is a stark portrait made even more ominous by being entirely possible and exposing a lot about us as a society we may not care to confront. These books aren't so much a portrait as a mirror.

If there is a weak spot, it's that Olaimina is too obviously an author avatar, but then again this *is* Butler's philosophy and much of her personal experience laid bare. It is the closest thing to an autobiography of the notoriously private author as we are likely to see nearly 10 years after her death. It provides a warning...and, perhaps, a pathway out.
Lauren Olamina isn’t like the other kids in her neighborhood, a walled-off city block in Robledo, just twenty miles outside of Los Angeles. Born to a drug-addicted mother, Lauren is afflicted with hyperempathy – the ability to share in the pain and pleasure of others, whether she wants to or not. This makes her an especially easy target for bullies – brother Keith used to make her bleed for fun when they were younger – so Lauren’s weakness is a carefully guarded secret, one shared only with her family. In this crumbling world, a near-future dystopia that’s all to easy to imagine, humans already devour their own literally as well as figuratively. Lauren won’t make herself an easy meal.

As if her hyperempathy isn’t alienating enough, Lauren has another secret, one that she only shares with her diary. The daughter of a Baptist preacher, Lauren no longer believes in her father’s god. Instead, she’s cultivating her own system of belief – Earthseed

Lauren gathers these verses into a book that she comes to think of as “The Books of the Living.” Her new religion? Earthseed. Its destination? The stars.

PARABLE OF THE SOWER is Lauren’s journal (of a sort). Begun on the eve of her 15th birthday and concluding more than three years later, through her diary we witness the collapse of Lauren’s fragile world. In a country wracked by poverty, climate change, mass unemployment, homelessness, drug abuse, class warfare, and unspeakable violence, Lauren’s small community is a fortress of sorts. Though they’re far from well-off, the diverse neighborhood manages to produce enough food and goods (and occasionally for-pay labor) to sustain itself. The residents put personal animosity aside to protect and care for one another rotating night watches keep would-be thieves at bay; when one resident’s garage catches fire, everyone becomes a firefighter; and Lauren’s step-mom Cory schools the neighborhood kids in her own home, since it’s too dangerous to venture outside the walls.

It’s not much, but it’s home. But even at the tender age of 15, Lauren can see it unraveling “We’ll be moved, all right. It’s just a matter of when, by whom, and in how many pieces.” (page 136)

After a series of blows – the disappearance of Lauren’s father; several successful infiltrations by thieves; a fire that claims all but one member of its household – Lauren’s community finally falls. Drugged out on “pyro,” a group of painted arsonists torch the neighborhood, killing and raping its residents. Lauren is just one of three to escape. Along with Zahra – the youngest of Richard Moss’s wives – and fellow teenager Harry, they hit the road in search of water and work. A safe place to pitch their (proverbial) tent. And, for Lauren, a safe haven in which to establish the very first Earthseed community.

PARABLE OF THE SOWER is a must read. A straight-up masterpiece. Originally published in 1993, it’s still painfully relevant – and painfully realistic – today. (Even as the gap between present and future has narrowed to a scant ten years; PARABLE OF THE SOWER takes place between July 20, 2024 and October 1, 2027.) Butler weaves together myriad social and environmental justice issues into a powerful social critique that feels neither forced nor preachy. Antebellum slavery, indentured servitude, police abuse, sundown towns, the underground railroad, the conflict between security and privacy, the privatization of public resources, polygamy, human trafficking, sexual slavery, child rape, border wars, water scarcity, passing as male – all of these and more merit a mention (or sometimes many mentions) in PARABLE OF THE SOWER.

Butler’s also created a cast that’s not only incredibly diverse – but also mostly lacking in white protagonists. (How refreshing!) In this future America, racism is alive and well neighborhoods often segregate themselves according to race, making Lauren’s mixed-race home an anomaly. (Lauren is black, with half-brothers who are of African American and Mexican American descent.) As her mixed-race, mixed-gender group of refugees/would-be converts trek through California, they earn more than their fair share of suspicious stares. In a world where people distrust those who don’t look like them, Lauren’s community’s principle of “we all look out for each other” is a source of confusion – and not a little hostility.

After finishing PARABLE OF THE SOWER, I was angry – angry that I wasn’t taught Butler in high school, right alongside Atwood and in lieu of the half dozen+ works of Shakespeare I labored through. (Someone please tell me this has changed?) My first Butler book was LILITH’S BROOD, which I loved; PARABLE OF THE SOWER is even better! I think I was more easily able to relate to the characters and the situations in which they found themselves minus the alien elements of LILITH’S BROOD. PARABLE OF THE SOWER is just a more accessible and easily-imaginable story.

I was worried that I might be put off by the more religious aspects of the EARTHSEED series, which is one reason why I put off reading it. Instead, I found Lauren’s new religion rather enchanting, and well in keeping with my own beliefs. (Two words starstuff and dust.) More of a philosophy than a religion per se, Earthseed posits that the ultimate truth is change everything changes. Change is constant. Change is unstoppable. Sometimes we can mold change; other times, change molds us. Rather than fight change, shape it when you can; when you can’t, bend to its will as needed. God is not a person; rather, God is change personified. Because a humanoid deity is what people have come to expect from their religion, Lauren makes the tactical decision to give it to them. Fellow traveler Bankle describes Lauren’s new religion as a blend of Buddhism, existentialism, and Sufism.

Just as God is change, Heaven is the stars it is Earthseed’s destiny to travel to the stars and settle other planets in the universe. Humanity’s past is here on Earth; its future is there in the stars. As much as I love the idea, this is where I must part ways with Earthseed humans have already destroyed one planet, and I’d rather not see it do the same to any others.

PARABLE OF THE SOWER gets 200 billion stars one for each star in the Milky Way.

I believe that this book could be classified as one of those stories that you are glad you took the time to read after you finish it, but getting to that final stage of completion is more of a task than it may seem.
Surprisingly, this is one of the few short stories (90 some pages) that I have ever read, that seemed to droan on for a good half of the time. Never the less, there were some profound moments in the story in which I felt I had been given some truly great moments in literature. My only qualm was that it needed to be about half (or cut it down by a fair 20 pgs) so the reader would not loose so much interest. Do remember though, it is only 90 pages long, so it is not one of the more monotonous scripts out there.
So depressing. It's snowing again.....cold, melancholy......a suicide attempt that is a plan to end up in heaven as angels, turns into a disabled lifetime.

What a delightful and exciting book! I got the audio from the library to listen along as I read it on my Kindle. I am glad I had little to do besides read because I don't think I could have left the book. Many great forms of philosophies were bantered about amid breath taking action. More than a few times I sat up straight, barely breathing in fear for the main characters. Pullman built believable worlds and populated them in ways that seem plausible. The actors in the borrowed audio copy on OverDrive were brilliant! I cried so much during the last few pages. I am sorry to see the end of these new friends. This, the third in the series, was the best one of all.

This Holder is great for watching long YouTube videos at my chair and in my bed. Really well made and strong. Love it
This phone holder is stronger than I expected. I thought it would be slightly flimsy, but it is actually pretty solid. The only thing is with it being so solid, it is a little stiff to move around and get into position. But once in position, it is very reliable and you don't have to worry it or whatever it is holding slipping or falling out. I use it to watch movies while I lay in bed. I used to hold them with my hand, now I can put my hands anywhere I need them. Hehe. But it!
Product is well made. Grips iPhone very securely, and the bendable neck stays where you leave it. I suggest when bending the neck that you hold it by just the neck, not one hand on the base or balljoint. It takes a lot of force to bend the neck...as it should, and the force may be too much for the base or balljoint.
The material is very solid which is great bc it stays in one place and doesnt move but also is a little too solid meaning its tough to move easy, you have to really give it a tug. I bought one for my oldest birthday gift and will most likely order 2 or 3 more for Christmas gifts bc of how cool and convenient it is.... i love it!

Can I mention that I love this thing? It's awesome!! I got an adjustable bed and I just wanna lay flat on my back with my feet up and not have to look either direction and I have to hold my arms up to watch my phone. So with this I can just attach it to my table and hanging over my face basically and lay there and watched TV. It's so strong I'm not even worried that it's going to drop on me or drop my phone or anything.

I have been a fan of the dark knight since I was a little kid. Though I also liked Superman, the appeal of Batman was that he did not have super powers. In that respect, anyone with enough natural physical ability, imagination and intelligence could possibly become a masked crime fighter. However, like any "super hero" instruction book the information in this text should be read with tongue in cheek. Nevertheless, there is a lot of solid and valid useful advice in this manual.

There are five detailed chapters in the text. Chapter one explains the basics required to become a crime fighter like Batman. The second chapter covers the Bat skills you need to learn to become like the dark knight. The third chapter provides an overview of the fighting skills you need to succeed when dealing with the bad guys. The fourth chapter explains the detective skills required to be a crime fighter. The final chapter deals with the escape skills you need to learn if you desire to be like Batman.

In conclusion, this is a book all Batman fans will want to own.

This book is basically written by Batman in The sense That he is training you to become like him I love the book think it was really well done very good information it's almost realistic enough to be real
A must have for any DC Comics fan, the Batman Handbook is the ultimate guide to becoming the ultimate crimefighter. Topics covered include building armor for the Batmobile, recruiting/training a sidekick, performing backflips, swinging using flagpoles, and most importantly how to take a blow to the head. Great for kids but some older types too.
Great book! This author knows Batman. After reading it, I was inspired by the fact that there is a hero-Batman in my case, in all of us! I loved it.
I bought the book expecting a rip-off or a satire of some sort. Instead, I got a wonderful manual of the real-world skills used by Batman, including disarming opponents wielding guns, whips, swords, etc., how to train a sidekick, and many other vital skills. The book also pokes fun at the other superheroes that us normal humans could never hope to be while defending the Caped Crusader's awesomeness.

Overall, a very entertaining read!
I love this book! It is funny, yet inspired (or should that be inspiring). My wife got this for me as a Christmas present a few yeas ago, and I have read it a few times, however I have refused to lend this out (after all I could not have just anyone learn these skills). According to the authors they researched every aspect of this book and consulted professionals and experts. So in theory a person could become Batman (although they would need to choose a different name, Batman is trademarked), an unlimited budget would also help. However as the book points out vigilantism is illegal, and even the most well meaning vigilante would be arrested. The book also contains a great disclaimer, stating that DC comics will not be held liable for any one who misuse the knowledge presented in this training manual.
I purchased this as a gift for my boyfriend, who is a huge fan of Batman. When I saw it online, I ordered it on a whim without knowing what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. After skimming the pages, I actually saw a lot to this book that even a non-Batman obsessed fan would find useful or entertaining. After some debating, I finally decided to give the book to my boyfriend (even though a part of me wanted to keep it for myself). He started reading it as soon as he got it and didn't put it down before he finished the whole thing, which only took him a couple hours so it was a pretty quick read. Although Batman is loved by kids, I actually don't think this book would be particularly appealing to them. I'm guessing someone in their teens or older might find this book more entertaining.
Who needs real Ninja training in Japan after reading this? Not you! You will be the Fist of Goodness, running across roof tops and battling thugs in the middle of the night once you're done reading this manual. It will unleash your inner Batman you never knew existed. However, be prepared to most likely get shot, stabbed or have a law suit filed against you. LoL Good luck future Dark Knights! In all honesty its a pretty good book and is for fun and fantasy. Please don't try this at home.

There are five detailed chapters in the text. Chapter one explains the basics required to become a crime fighter like Batman. The second chapter covers the Bat skills you need to learn to become like the dark knight. The third chapter provides an overview of the fighting skills you need to succeed when dealing with the bad guys. The fourth chapter explains the detective skills required to be a crime fighter. The final chapter deals with the escape skills you need to learn if you desire to be like Batman.

In conclusion, this is a book all Batman fans will want to own.

I really like this whole series.
I am sad when I finish a book. I last read it 9 years ago, it is still fun to re-read it this time.

The point of view changes, but the characters are well written.
Each one has a distinct style.
The basic premise is a group of college kids go to play a Dungeons and Dragons type of game, and then find themselves inside that world.
Too bad for them, they have a western European outlook on the place of women and slavery and such. And if one dies on the other side, they are dead in this world, too.
But because they have science in a medieval world, they are rather successful in changing that society's views on feudal Government as they labor to keep the flame of freedom alive.

There is some sexual content, but it is oblique, not in your face.
The Graphic violence is about the damage to human flesh that occurs during war, but it seems organic to the plot.

It is OK
Second book in a series I read a long time ago. It was good to go back in and reread it.
This book introduces a fallible hero with a lust for action that precedes strategy. He mixes love loyalty and purpose pretty well and the story keeps you turning the pages.
I loved this series when I first discovered it years ago. It's great to read it again. Since I played D&D years ago also I loved the premise of the books.
Another in the guardians of the flame series. What can a person say except you either love the world Joel created or you don't. This series is more geared to us classic dungeons and dragons players from back in the day )
I read this series in High school. It was great then and this still holds true after reading them again. It's been many many years since then but anyone who reads the series will love them as much today as I did the first and second time around. It is truly a timeless series, good for all generations.
A classic in the "whisked away to fantasy world genre" perhaps a bit dated with many references to the war of the sexes in late 1970s, but a milestone in the early 1980s, and showing the darker unpleasant side of line in that time, but with a few moments of wonder and insight.

I was really surprised to find that this was the author's first novel. It was extremely well written. The plot flowed nicely, the characters were interesting. My only negative comment: too much detail to food and décor. The main character, Olivia (whom I really liked) is a chef and there is much emphasis on food and cooking. I would often stop reading & go and prepare myself a snack. However, this is insignificant. I would highly recommend this book & look forward to reading the next book about the Harper sisters.

Satin Russell knocked it out of the park with her intense novel debut. Her characters were well developed (she writes one creepy bad guy), and I'm thrilled to know that this is just book one in a series. I'm looking forward to getting to know more of the characters in this dynamic cast.
I read this quickly enough to stay intrigued. I liked the suspense with the romance. I bought both of her books.
It's been quite some time since I've read anything other than children's books, having a six-year-old at home...Secret Hunger was an amazing read to get back into adult fiction! The mystery and danger interwoven with romance kept me turning page after page - I didn't want to put it down! I've been holding off on starting Secret Need so as not to get ahead of my book club...looking forward to reading it soon though!
I found the storyline kept me on the edge of my seat while I enjoyed learning about the relationships throughout.
Can NOT believe this is a debut novel! Great lead characters, you get to know and like Mason and Olivia, and best of all, Olivia is not a tstl heroine. Secondary characters are interesting, you get a little insight into them, enough to make you want to read their stories but they never over shadow Mason and Olivia. Story line is top notch, you know they'll get their hea, but the journey is twisty and interesting. This is a grown up story without the angsty drama, a thousand thank yous for that by the way )

Will definitely be reading the next books in the series, and if her debut is this well written can't wait to see what she does in the future.
Let me preface this by saying; this is the first time I have read a book by Satin Russell, but I love her easy style of descriptive writing. While I do think there are places where this could be tailored back, overall, she does an amazing job of crafting a well-developed plot, and creating believable characters that suck you in. I loved the nail-biting suspense, and I adapted to the omniscient point of view which at first was a little jarring, but allowed us to see inside the minds of each character bringing us to a satisfying conclusion. I will be dipping into book 2 for sure.
This is a wonderful suspenseful romance. Olivia and Mason are strong characters and you really want them to get their HEA. Ms. Russell did a great job making Robert (the villian) a real sicko! The story takes place in Bath, Maine where Olivia owns and operates a cafe. Mason comes into town to visit his sister and recuperate and instantly falls for Olivia. She doesn't have time to fall in love--her business comes first, until she realizes she can't fight her feelings for Mason. Throughout the book, Olivia is mentally and emotionally tortured by Robert and Mason is a wonderful, sexy hero who is there for her despite his own painful past. Olivia is a fighter and won't give up, although there are a few moments where you can feel her wanting to just give in, but she pushes on. I also enjoyed getting to know her two sisters who add to the plot, but don't overtake the story. I look forward to reading their stories in the near future. I'm also hoping that Mason's sister will get a story of her own as well. The sex scenes are steamy, so beware, but they really do show great chemistry between Olivia and Mason.

Okay, so here's the thing: I picked up this book by accident. It's totally not the kind of book I usually read and I almost deleted it when I realized what I'd done...but I'm also a voracious reader and I hate wasting a book so I gave it a chance. I am so glad that I did. I was hooked after the first chapter and it turned out to be one of the better books I've read lately. There was a good bit of action in it (love) and it was easy to connect with the characters. It was a good story to get lost in for a few hours. Side note: everyone knows how much I hate cliffhangers, and while this book ended with some unresolved issues (it is the first in a series after all), it did NOT end with a major cliffhanger (like wondering if the main character is still alive or in the middle of a scene). In my opinion, that's another plus for Mr. Estes and his writing.

I was about to crack open the final installment of what I thought was the end to this series, but the author warned against it. Instead, he recommended readers read all books in the series, including, the main and sister series.

So, that is what I am doing.

I’m not a big series kind of gal, I often feel it’s just a ploy to sell more books. So I grumbled a bit when I realized what I thought was a 4 part series, turned out to be 7.

In a huff, I will admit that Estes has kept my interest for 4 books now. I have 2 1/2 to go, in order to complete this series. I am finding that the world he has created, a dysfunctional Earth that I don’t recognize, is worth every extra hour I have invested.

I have my favorites from the series, like we all do. The Moon Dwellers is so far my favorite, whereas Fire Country comes in second.

This is such a unique dystopian tale— different than any of the others I have read so far. Estes has created multiple cultures and dialects for his characters and each one is colorful and diverse. It’s a young adult epic.

I give Estes a shiny star for his character creation because I acutely feel their personalities. I feel like I know them intimately. Estes knows how to create a character with deep thoughts, conflicted feelings, and humor. They are real to me, not some figment of imagination. I can feel the blood pumping through them.

My only complaint, which I fear is a growing one with authors and editors in today’s world is the overuse of the punctuation mark, Mr. Colon. It was incredibly overused and I kept wishing that it would just go away. It was corrupting an almost perfect reading experience for me.

If you are looking for a story that breathes life and personality, a tale that inspires the wounded and the marginalized, that shows what we can accomplish when we let go of superficial comfort and safety, then this is the story for you.

It is a tale of brave heroes and heroines, strong female role models and heart stopping action and attraction. Take a chance and discover the magic of Estes.
I got this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much when it came to this book. I thought it was just going to be yet another Hunger Games, Divergent, or and I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised. When it comes to young adult books it seems that most of them miss the mark and simply copycat story lines but this was a great book. It does borrow elements from other stories but it twists them in new and refreshing ways. I loved how well written the characters were and the emotions that were portrayed.

As to the audiobook portion of my review The narrators of the book were amazing. I usually end up finishing the audiobook by reading the last few pages (I read faster) but the narrators kept me coming back for the story. I could really feel the characters come to life through their voices. I'm definitely going to have to find other books narrated by them.

David Estes created a great book that combines young adult, slight romance, and adventure all in one. I'm definitely going to have to recommend this book to everyone looking for a fun new read. I only wish that it was available at Barnes and Nobel (not through the market place) because this would definitely be my next staff recommendation.

Fantastic! Those were the days ... the swingin' A's ... three championship (consecutive) seasons. Excellent DVD ... great memories!
When I picked up this book, I thoroughly expected it to be full of anecdotes about one of the most exciting teams and eccentric owners of all time. What I got was much less. Basically, this book rehashes the box scores and quotations of the time...and adds little else.
Not only that...there are typos galore.
If you idea of fun reading is statistics in paragraph form....go for it. I prefer something a little less boring.
A must read for any A's fan!!
The description and details of the A's dynasty of the 1970's makes this one of the best sports book out there!

This book is the most parent friendly reference book about small children that I have read. It far surpasses the concept that the "What to expect" series format popularized. It is easy to read. (Doesn't read like a medical textbook.) I particularly enjoyed the limits section and the essay on oppositional behavior as I have been having difficulty with my son with a strong personality since my second son was born. I have read Dr. Dobson and Dr. Brazelton extensively and understood concepts when dealing with a strong-willed child, but Dr. Nathanson's book provides vebatim examples and also includes how to look, what to make the child think and what your goal is in discipline. Her examples have helped enormously, and I am beginning to enjoy my 4-year old again instead of constantly engaging in a battle of wills with him all day long.
The book combines medical advice with behavioral information that I do not get at my well-child visits. (Which makes me question the quality of our visits...)
I must have the newer edition (white and blue), because mine does not have the horrible illustrations mentioned in previous reviews. I have already recommended this book to several fellow parents. And I was excited to see today that there is an older version for kids 5-12 as my oldest son is 4 and I was sad that the first book was ending at age 5. I would recommend the second book sight unseen just by how much I have liked the first volume.
I have 3 children and half-a-dozen parenting books. This is the only one I continue to use. It has great information to help you figure out when you actually NEED to call a doctor, and Dr. Nathanson talks like someone who actually likes to hear what parents think. This book has helped me catch some pretty significant illnesses early on, before they became more serious. I highly recommend it for anyone with young children, whether they are first time parents or more experienced. I give this book as a gift at every baby shower I attend.
I LOVE this book. I used it ten years ago with my first child and even though some of the standards have changed and some language is out of date, this book is still my go-to resource with my newborn. It's really well written, well organized, humorous, detailed, and soooooo helpful for all things baby and child related.
Wanting to be as well informed as possible when it came to raising my kids, I read just about every child-care book out there. I found this book to be the most comprehensive, easy to understand and reasonable. She gives the most extensive information concerning common(and not so common)childhood illnesses AND how to deal with them, and her views on child psychology are right on the mark. As with any author on this subject, you may not agree with EVERYTHING she says, but at least she provides explanations with possible solutions for most problems you'll encounter with children. I find myself referring to this book almost everytime I need information concerning my kids.
Her sense of humor is a real boon, and this is the book I give to anyone I know having a child. I saw she was criticized for the "illustrations" and lack of color, but if you need to be entertained and/or dazzled while reading a book of this nature maybe the welfare of your kids isn't your top priority!
I will admit, I am a little biased as I am a good friend of Dr. Nathanson's daughter. Even with this in mind, I have really used and enjoyed this book. Unlike many of the other parenting books in my possession (ranging from Dr. Sears to Dr. Dobbs), I feel this book offers a balanced approach to parenting issues. She's upfront as to where she stands, and often provides info on both sides. While not as touchy-feely as Dr. Sears, she really captured some of my feelings (her infant section talks about falling in love with your baby), and still tells stories while still staying to the point(my husband disliked Sears Baby Book because of the large amounts of stories).
The book is not meant as a substitute for medical care. Rather she tries to help clarify when a situation is something worth calling the doctor about, or running to the E.R. As a first time mom I find this very useful as I am never sure if I am overreacting or not.
Each section describes the babys emotional,physical, and skills development. She also discusses common illness for that age, and what to expect at the baby well-visit. She also has a profile on special issues like divorce and "if we get pregnant now", and how it would affect that age group. There is also several sections in the back that apply to all ages letters to give to interferring relatives about the latest baby info like not smoking around baby, breastfeeding etc, more detailed illness information, and first aid.
My only complaint are the illustrations which are weird, and the fact that its slighly out of date in relation to some of the latest AAP recomendations.
Overall, I think its a great addition to a new parents library.
Best child-rearing book ever - and funny, to boot! Dr. Nathanson cuts to the chase and makes learning about the various stages of child development entertaining. I might have even read it if I had no children!
In addition to great advice about health and first aid, it
has good explanations of what kids are going through
developmentally at different ages. These helped us to deal
with sleep issues, among other things.
I purchased a bunch of books, and even read most of several of them.
This is the one I keep going back to over and over again.

This book is a great addition to the Otherworld Series library. It gives a real insight into Nick as a character since in the core series he isn't really developed as anything other than a rich playboy. He kinda steps up in this particular story and its nice to see him further developed. If you were left wondering "But what about Malcolm?" at the end of the core series, this is a BIG update for that evil dude we love to hate. This is a fairly quick read with no "slow" spots. It is a story that knows where it wants to go and it gets there all too soon. (If you are a mega fan like me lol)

I DO NOT recommend this for anyone that isn't familiar with the series mainly because of spoilers and possible confusion because this is a story that builds on many other stories.

Brazen Otherworld Kelley Armstrong Xaviere Daumarie 9781596066168 Books Reviews

Brazen is a Women of the Otherworld novella (set after the final book Thirteen).

The narrators are Nick (pack member) and Vanessa (new character who is a P.I.).

I am not sure why it has taken me so long to get to this novella. I absolutely adore the Women of the Otherworld series. But it was quite interesting to read this after having seen Season 1 and half of Season 2 of the tv show Bitten. There are a bunch of characters either in this novella or mentioned who have different fates in the tv show. So it's interesting/slightly confusing to try to keep the two mediums separate in my head.

I do like Nick Sorrentino so it was nice to have him as the main narrator. I also like that we got to see a bit of Clay and Elena.

The story was enjoyable. If you like The Women of the Otherworld series then all of the novellas are must reads!
This is about 140 pages featuring Nick Sorrentino, pack playboy extraordinaire. Nick is definitely one of my favorite character of the series, based on his loyalty to Clay and Elena alone. Nick has always been underestimated in my opinion because, as an Omega, he has been fine with taking a back seat on most things, as well as a decided lack of aggression and ambition. Nick is not one to claw his way up the pack ranks and has often been viewed by outsiders as a nonentity. Even when he does when fights with other wolves, his reputation doesn't grow the way Clay's does with each win.

Recently he has felt that he needs to step up more within the pack, simply because Clay and Elena now have the twins and as pack Alpha, Elena can't be expected to go out on every case. Nick has already been there to support Clay and Elena and now he realizes that with their increased responsibility, he has to take on more to continue supporting them the way they need.

When word comes that Malcolm Danvers has been tracked down by an agency that the pack hired, Nick head's out to partner with one of the agency operatives, Vanessa Callas. I enjoyed this story because it gives us more of Nick and how he has grown within the pack. I also like the way he has stepped out of his comfort zone. Always content to follow wherever Elena and Clay direct him, seeing him make decisions and take charge is a nice change.

The romance of the story was okay. It was a very slow build that didn't really culminate into anything, but gives us more hope for the future. But will there be more books in the series to let us see the conclusion? I don't know. I also wish that the story was just a little bit longer and gave us more of a happy ending the way Hope and Karl's book did. Overall though, I was very satisfied that Kelley Armstrong is continuing to give us glimpses back into the Otherworld realm and hasn't completely left us out to dry. The only hard part as a reader is wondering if she will continue to do that, or if at some point we'll finally realize that's the end.
It is so nice to be able to dive back into the world that Kelley Armstrong built. While Elena and Clay are still some of my favorite wolves to follow, Nick is definitely up there. Here, we get to watch the newly "grown up" Nick settling into his life, complete with some pretty hefty responsibilities.

The story begins with Nick pretty much turning down some sex. For any other character, it might not be so startling, but for Nick it was a big change. It has been some time coming, what with his acceptance of essentially becoming a foster father for the new younger generation of pack members. Along with these responsibilities comes the task of coordinating the hunt for Malcolm. This whole Malcolm storyline is endlessly frustrating with near misses galore. This story, however, had all the makings of a good Malcolm capture. Nick's hired the best set of mercenaries and given them all they need to track down the pack's bogeyman.

Vanessa is the half-demon leading the hunt for Malcolm. She's been so driven that she can't seem to make time for romance, until Nick walks into her life. Sure, they get off on the wrong foot, but with Malcolm being... Malcolm, these two are forced to spend a lot of time in close quarters. What seems like it might have been another one-night-stand for the infamous Nick Sorrentino actually ends up being something completely different. That's the only type of HEA we get, though, sadly.
This book is a great addition to the Otherworld Series library. It gives a real insight into Nick as a character since in the core series he isn't really developed as anything other than a rich playboy. He kinda steps up in this particular story and its nice to see him further developed. If you were left wondering "But what about Malcolm?" at the end of the core series, this is a BIG update for that evil dude we love to hate. This is a fairly quick read with no "slow" spots. It is a story that knows where it wants to go and it gets there all too soon. (If you are a mega fan like me lol)

I DO NOT recommend this for anyone that isn't familiar with the series mainly because of spoilers and possible confusion because this is a story that builds on many other stories.

Being a writer, I usually do not read works by authors unless they have a proven track record. I have to admit after reading this book, how snobbish my attitude was. This is a marvelous story of two friends on a fantastic adventure as the title implies. It is fantasy grounded firmly in reality.

The author very cleverly takes these two contradictory elements and turns his tale into a wonderful and at times startling ride for two boys. This is a difficult task for any seasoned writer and Mr. Croft has combined many storytelling elements here and made them credible particularly his unsettling references to war under Hitler.

This is a book that will appeal to the YA group and adults as well. The author has a good insight of young people. I'll take a book like this any day over Harry Potter or The Twilight saga. It is well-written and deserves the highest praise and attention.

Thank you Mr. Croft for not only for the wake up call, but telling a rivetingly original story. I encourage avid readers to drop the literary fads like Potter and Twilight and read something worthwhile. This novel is a good starting point.

A fantastic tale of fantasy and adventure. This British author is a talented story teller and I can thoroughly recommend it to all readers. An unusual tale of magic travel in Europe in the 1960s with references to Poland and the holocaust.

Revolution 19 Gregg Rosenblum Books Reviews

There is a lot of action and drama. A very slight romance but it definitely isn’t the focus of the book and is only brought up a couple times. I actually have a feeling that it may be more pronounced in the second book. I loved the fact that this was based more on the problem at hand than establishing a romance. The fact that there is no love triangle is a bonus too.

I enjoyed the fact that robots were the controlling power and I could definitely see this as a thing that could really happen to us. People rely on machines way too much. When the kids make it to the city and realize that nothing is what they believed it to be, however it is still just as dangerous to them. Because they were constantly on the run there was always some suspense at what would happen next. Which kept me wanting to read. The robots were not as scary as I imagined they would be and it seems they are pretty easily destroyed. I’m hoping something new and exciting comes out in the next book.

There wasn’t a whole lot of world building in this book. We know the basic stuff like what was going on and what led to the robot take over but we really didn’t how they really came to be. It is just touched upon. I would like some more answers on that and I believe they will be answered in the next book. I also continually got confused between Kevin and Nick. There were no differences between them personality wise so I had to sometimes go back and make sure I was thinking of the correct person.

I didn’t see any problems with the writing style and I felt that it flowed smoothly. As I said with the robot situation, things seemed to happen easily when they needed to. Particularly in the last few scenes of the book. I have a feeling this will continue on in the rest of the series but hopefully I can look past that.

If you are looking for some super scary “Terminator” type story then this one is probably not for you. I still think it was a good quick read and I will definitely be reading the second book.
Lexi. Despite her over use of the term rock star, Lexi is a fierce, independent, headstrong, and determined girl. She stands up for what she believes in, she takes risks for a greater cause than herself, she is compassionate, loving, funny. Lexi is a strong role model and a very positive female character.

The organization and implementation of robot laws and practices and how they deal with infractions, the whims of the new citizens, and education is really complex and notable addition to the story. The robots have their own system of government and extremely advanced technology that is really cool, and crazy to think about because our current technology is not that far off.

The fact that the focus is not on the love story but on a family's love for one another is refreshing.

The use of carrier pigeons is awesome and the juxtaposition of a world with and without technology is startling.

CONS

These characters make the most reckless, stupid decisions ever and then wonder why things always end badly. I was constantly infuriated by the fact that throughout the book they're concerned about safety and taking risks but when it matters they're too stubborn to follow their own advice. There were several instances where I wanted to strangle Nick. By the end, this urge did not go away, writing about it only continues to fuel my fury.

Infiltrating the system should not have been so simple, it's barely plausible.

It makes no sense that they would not be more concerned about robotic implantation, especially of organs.

It is also unclear why the robots changed heart. Why were they first presented as cold, killing at random but then they make a collective decision to be humankind's savior?

The secondary characters are so much more interesting than the main protagonists.
Was an exciting premise, and want to read more about the characters. Can't wait to see if there is another installment.
I loved this book. I just could not put it down. Revolution 19 had tons of mysteries that you have to keep reading.
Decent. A lot of potential and hype only to be let down their robots are lame and easily attacked.
I enjoy this story and it's nuances. I think this is the kind of book that requires the whole series be read. The ending definitely makes me want to keep reading!

This is an interesting and helpful book by Bryan Carraway about the many God-given spiritual gifts mentioned in the Bible that we can possess with the help of the Holy Spirit. This book is more of an intro to spiritual gifts as it talks about why they exist, how we can discover them, how they can be used to help the church, and it also gives some background information on the subject. There are 30 different gifts he examines that are demonstrated in the Bible. Some are more well known, but there are also some you may not be aware of.

Overall, I found this book to be real helpful, but Carraway doesn't go into much detail on the significance of each gift and how they can be used. That might be disappointing to someone who wants to learn more about a specific gift. Also, although he covers a lot of gifts, he seems to talk as if these are the only ones a person can have and that no others exist. I'm not sure if that's true, but he does include at least most of the gifts the Bible speaks of. This isn't a big issue I have with the book, but I'm pointing it out because this is kind of a debatable topic when it comes to identifying what spiritual gifts there are, and Carraway doesn't seem to acknowledge that with his rather fixed views. You just need to be open-minded when you read this book

The book also includes a test that can be a helpful way to understand which gifts you specialize in. If you want some in-depth information about one of these gifts and how they can be used, you may want to find another book to read or talk to your pastor or to someone else in your church. It can help pinpoint your strengths and also be used as a reference guide for understanding the fundamentals of spiritual gifts and what kinds of gifts there are.

Spiritual Gifts Their Purpose Power Bryan Carraway Books Reviews

"Spiritual Gifts" By Bryan Carraway is a welcome addition to the current teachings in this field. His approach to the subject is both relevant and relational. His explanations on the gifts gave me personal insight into areas I had been struggling with in my own life.

The book begins with an overview of God's interaction with people throughout the Scriptures. I really appreciate this foundation and the fact that the Old Testament is brought into consideration. This flows well with his argument that God has always been active in the gifts. He gives a well researched argument against cessationism (belief which states gifts ended with Apostles).

I also appreciated the outlining of the major beliefs -- constitutional versus manifestational and people like me who have a hybrid view on the subject.I have never been one for strict divisions when it comes to theology. But the classification system Mr. Carraway uses is helpful, if at least from the stance of study. Many gifts, I believe can overlap, but we do have to have some way of looking at them. The contemporary and biblical examples aide in understanding how the gifts operate on a practical level.

I appreciate the addition of a glossary so gifts can be referenced quickly. Also, the study questions and inventory self-exam.

I highly recommend this book, even if one has studied this field in depth.
If you are looking for a well-balanced book on Spiritual Gifts, this is it! In researching for a class I'm teaching in the Netherlands on the gifts I looked at and read numerous books on the topic. This was the most comprehensive and well-balanced I found. Bryan Carraway does an excellent job of approaching the topic objectively and always defers to the Bible whenever possible. This book is rooted in the Word and when Mr. Carraway offers his opinion, he's very careful to identify it as such. He clearly holds the Bible as authoritative in all things.

He begins by defining and explaining the the differing points of views on the matter ranging from the Charismatic movement to absolute cessationism. I thought he gave both sides, as well as those in between, a fair hearing and presented their cases fairly. Some of the best advice offered in the book is to obey your church leaders submissively and not be the cause of dissention. Once I read that, I knew I had the right book!!! If you're looking for ammunition to blast "the other side" this isn't the right book for you. If you, rather, are looking for a serious study on the gifts of the Spirit, what they are, where they come from, how they are ideally employed, how to grow them, and some examples in history of how they were used, this is the best choice I've found outside of the Bible.

The book is well documented with excellent footnotes as well as a very comprehensive "Spiritual Gifts Inventory" in the appendices. Many have been critical of these types of inventories claiming that we shouldn't limit the Spirit. I'm not one to speak for Mr. Carraway, but from reading his book, I suspect he would agree on the point of not limiting the Spirit. His inventory is properly used as a gauge for beginning to get an idea of where the Spirit is leading a person. I don't think any inventory should be used conclusively, but I do think it's accurate in identifying possible directions or confirming gifts.

Read this book and expand your horizons for letting God use you to carry out His will. I heartily give this book my warm recommendation.
What a great book. I like that it is written by someone who is a follower of Christ. So many books out there speaking of spiritual gifts that can easily lead you off the Christian path. This book teaches of the different gifts the God has given us for his purpose and different views of it.
This book was very well written offering various viewpoints to tough topics. I appreciate his knowledge in approach and freedom for the reader to test these ideas to Scripture. A must read for anyone looking to dive deeper into God's gifting on His people.
