Fresh New Start

I can't believe that is has been five months since I last posted on this blog! Where have we been? Quite honestly right here at home. We have just gotten into a terrible rut! With the new school year starting on September 1st, I am ready to start fresh. I am a big picture kinda girl and I have a habit of getting over whelmed very easily because I forget that everything needs to be done in baby steps. I always want to tackle everything all once and get it done. When that doesn't happen I get frustrated and never finish what I've started. My goal for this year is to stay focused on finishing tasks, taking small steps to getting our home and school organized. For the past couple of days I have been working on putting together a household binder. It will be my brain on paper! It will contain a calender, important numbers, finance checklist for bills, home maintenance records, auto maintenance records, the dreaded "to do" list, meal planning, medical info, and all our homeschool records. I have requested that making this binder be a family project, so far so good. Miracle Child made the binder cover using MS Publisher. He has discovered that he really likes designing and building forms and flyers.I may have created a monster but at least everything he does now will look nice! So hear is to a wonderful fresh new start. I am so thankful that God allows me to start fresh and new each and everyday. Hallelujah!

Weekly Wrap-Up: Sick Days!

We have done so well this year avoiding being sick. But that is no longer true, for the past three weeks we have been fighting colds. Miracle Child started out with just a scratchy throat which progressed into a sinus and ear infection. That was doctor visit number one. Then My Beloved started complaining that he was feeling under the weather and my ear and sinuses were not feeling so hot either, so off to the doctor again. This time all the Morrisketeers visited with the doctor, I wanted make sure Miracle Child was really getting better, no such luck! We left with eight different prescriptions, everyone but me was prescribed antibiotics. When we left the office I told My Beloved that I was sure I would be back and my cold would be worse. Oh how I wish the doctor had just prescribed the darned antibiotics that day. I suffered for a whole week before going back for doctor visit number three, I have pneumonia! So this week has been really slow for our homeschool.

We have still managed to get things done but it has been really relaxed. Miracle Child has not been able to practice his clarinet for over two weeks because he can't breathe out of his nose. It has been hard to miss band and seeing our friends. However, we did watch the History Channel's "The History of St. Patrick's Day" and ate corn beef sandwiches to celebrated St. Patrick's Day. For extra spelling practice I managed to sneak in playing Scrabble. With Miracle Child being dyslexic finding cool ways to practice our spelling is a goal of mine. And best of all we have spent hours engrossed in conversation. We have talked about history, books we've read, and my favorite subject, Jesus. It has been so nice to take a break from our workbooks and just focus on spending time talking. I guess being sick has had its advantages!

This is our first entry for Lego Creation Thursday! Last year we visited a granite quarry, this is Miracle Child’s version of a Lego Quarry. He used a gray blanket to simulate the quarry walls, pretty cool!

Winter Blahs Turn to Spring

I have gotten away from updating my blog over the winter and I’m not very happy about it. This winter has been better for my family than winters of the past (cold and flu wise) but for some reason I have just had the blahs. I have tried hard to be upbeat but to no avail. Winter always sucks the life of me, I hate the dark overcast days and cold weather. Miracle Child and I have limped along in our homeschool work. Our excitement has waned some, we just haven’t been really been motivated to do more. That is all changing now that spring is on the way.

Over the past couple of weeks the weather has been so much nicer (not including the cold snap we are currently experiencing here in ATL). We have ventured outside onto the back deck, school books in hand. We laid on the hammock, we set up our picnic table, rolled out a rug, put up a tent and grilled food. Oh how I love the warmer weather! My energy is starting to return and I feel more excited about sharing what the Morrisketeers are up to with my readers. I am so happy to say goodbye to the winter blahs!

I Got Bit by the Glitter Bug

I wanted to spruce our Christmas decorations without breaking the bank. We bought some expensive ribbon years ago that we have used every year on our tree so I decided to make decorations that incorporated the colors of the ribbon. I was inspired by a post about glitter trees on Dollarstorecrafts.com. Instead of using the glass candlesticks from Dollar Tree I went to the thrift store and purchased brass candlesticks for $0.79. It didn’t stop here I managed to glitter everything I could get my hands on…in fact I have been walking around for two weeks now with glitter in my hair and on my skin. I was not trying to be a party girl but that glitter is so fine it just goes everywhere. So if you see me this Christmas season and I’m all sparkly you’ll know why.

Also inspired by something I saw on the Martha Stewart Show for Glittered Tree Toppers, I made this tree topper for our tree.

Miracle Child and I also made these candle holders. We just modpodged small squares cut from red tissue paper all over the glass ivy bowl. Then we printed out the letters in MS Word and cut them out. I made sure to choose a letter that was just outline and not fully filled in with color because we wanted our letters to be white. We then placed a votive candle inside, once lit they really look lovely. I was thinking that maybe I should glitz the top rim with white glitter. What do you think?

Weekly Wrap-Up 11/5/10

We seem to be moving at a snail’s pace and still have not been able to complete our Christopher Columbus lapbook! I am ready to finish so we can move on to studying Pilgrims and Thanksgiving but that just doesn’t seem to be happening. This is the way it works at our homeschool, being dyslexic can sometimes slow us down. My Miracle Child can be so slow when it comes to completing writing assignments. I fully understand his struggle for I too am dyslexic, it took me until I was 40 years old to find out. We are so blessed to find out about his dyslexia at an earlier age, now he won’t have to go through life feeling like he is dumb. It is a terrible feeling to sit in a classroom and feel like you are the dumbest person who has ever lived. That is just how I felt. I struggled with reading and spelling was a joke. Now looking back I realize just how hard I really worked in college, I had to overcome my reading and spelling struggles to put together research papers and take tests. My true intelligence was never able to shine through. I avoided spelling words I was unfamiliar with and instead relied only on words I could comfortably spell. I developed my own set of techniques to make it through studying and taking tests. I always really understood the subject/class but just could never express my knowledge on paper. My self-esteem was totally in the dumpster! How could I know the subject and yet not be able to express it properly when the time came to write the paper? These are the issues that we are addressing in our homeschool today. Miracle Child proudly accepts his dyslexia and wears it like a badge of honor. He knows that just because his reading and writing are not perfect doesn’t reflect on his intellect. He is extremely creative and musically inclined, and like most dyslexics he can discuss topics well beyond his years and grasp the big picture quickly. I was once told by his public school teacher that if she had not spoken to Miracle Child she would have placed him in Special Ed based on his reading test scores but that she knew he was really smart because he was so engaging in conversion. This is the problem that dyslexic children face everyday; they are told that they just aren’t applying themselves hard enough. This week I read a wonderful post called When Reading Hurts that describes everything I have been talking about. Teaching my dyslexic son has taught me a lot about myself, I am learning right along with him. I am now a confident speller thanks to AVKO Sequential Spelling and spell check on the computer. I love to read and you can always find me reading posts on the internet or at least four books on my nightstand. I am prayerful that I can guide my child in to a love of reading. I surrendered our dyslexia to God and trust that he gave us the skills we need to succeed at what he has in store for us. Hallelujah!

Now for some of the fun stuff we did this week….

Friday was Homeschool Day at the Marietta Museum of History, this was our first visit ever. We loved it! I think my favorite item in the museum had to be the X-Ray Shoefitter, can you believe that they once x-rayed children’s feet to see if their shoes fit properly? The exposure risk alone had to be off the charts! Think about the kids who got new shoes a couple of times a year.

My Beloved and Miracle Child’s favorite exhibits were the guns, military and scouting items.

My Beloved was so excited to see this Steve Scout doll, he had just been telling us last week about how he and his brothers each had one of these dolls.

All and all it was a great trip to the museum and a wonderful week homeschooling!

Weekly Wrap-Up 10/29/10

This is my first post for the Weird Unsocialized Homerschoolers blog. Our homeschool style is eclectic, Miracle Child is 11 years old, dyslexic and a 5th grader. For spelling we always use Sequential Spelling by AVKO. For math we love, and I mean love, Math U See, Miracle Child adores Mr. Demme. We use lots of audio books and I read aloud books that are well past Miracle Child’s reading level. The awesome part of having only one child is that we can spend hours discussing topics without interruption. Now on to what we did this week….

Every Friday we participate in beginner band with Joyful Noise Homeschool Band where Miracle Child plays the clarinet. Last week we had the opportunity to paint a Christmas ornament supplied by Out of the Box Art Studio. This week we got to pick up our creations, I think they look pretty good considering it was our first time ever painting ceramics.

We also attend classes at the Timothy Ministry at First Baptist Woodstock. Miracle Child is taking a computer gaming class. For his project this semester he has to program a completed game in some what of the same style as a Mario or Pac Man game. We have been fighting a cold all week and didn’t make it to class this week instead we just stayed home and work on his project.

Language Arts: for grammar this week we worked on declarative and imperative sentences. We are continuing to work on a Christopher Columbus lapbook. I love that we were able to visit the Nina & Pinta last week. This really makes studying Columbus come to life.

This has really been one of those weeks where I feel like we just never got into the swing of things. I don’t know if it’s the change of the weather (all three members of the Morrisketeers have spent all week fighting headaches) or depression. Whatever the reason I know we will try harder next week to get things moving forward.

We did get a chance to play in the leaves, it doesn’t get any better than that!

Isn't that the age old question around this time? We have struggled this year to decide if Miracle Child would even dress up much less actually Trick or Treat. We settled on just dressing up and handing out candy but we would not be visiting the neighbors to beg for treats. It is just too hard when you consider that we will have to throw away most of the candy we collect because it has gluten. I really couldn’t give up my child dressing up, I get the biggest kick out of it. I have made most of his costumes over the years and love to take pictures of him all dressed up. The best part is we have always managed to pull together an awesome costume on a shoe string budget. I refused to pay full price for throw away costumes from the store. Over the years Miracle Child has gone as a monkey, Elvis, Captain Kirk, an army solider, a robot (my personal favorite), a mad scientist, a fantasy wizard, a Jedi, a Storm Trooper (the only costume we bought), an airline pilot and a package delivery driver. So what will it be this year? Indiana Jones!

Brisket, Ribs and Pulled Pork… Oh My!

Outside of politics, religion and SEC football, I can't think of any subject other than barbecue which can set otherwise rational people into fits of rage. Depending on region, you're looking at beef versus pork, wet versus dry, mustard based versus tomato based...and that doesn't even take into consideration all of the local variations which mix things into a dizzying array or dry rubbed, wet mustard sauced, smoked pork stuffed chicken thighs. Let someone mention that they hate Brunswick stew in the wrong quarter, and suffice it to say that things can easily devolve into a brawl. With that in mind, and understanding the dangerous waters I'm treading attempting this, what follows is an unvarnished review of one of our favorite local 'cue spots, J.D's Barbecue just outside of Acworth, GA.

As anyone with a serious barbecue palate knows, you can tell a lot about the joint by examining the outside. I know it's a stereotype, but generally speaking, I'm unaware of good barbecue coming out of a place that looks like it might sell scented candles and $45 cook books at the front counter. If you pull up to a so-called barbecue joint that has fresh paint, the front porch looks like it was installed by an actual crew of guys who used a level (much less knew what a level was for), you can probably bet the 'cue is parboiled and has more in common with a pair of Nike running shoes than something any self-respecting barbecue connoisseur would put in their mouth. J.D.'s don't sell scented candles, but they do have t-shirts.

Now don't get me wrong, you don't want to eat at a place where the health inspector is afraid to darken the door for fear of breathing the air, that's not what I'm saying, and as far as cleanliness goes, J.D.'s is tops, but if a 'cue joint isn't shabby you have to wonder, what are they trying to distract me from? Life's too short to eat crummy 'cue, and as a frequent flyer at J.D.'s, I can attest to the fact that the collection of license plates running the length of the main dining room (which used to be an old gas station...I think), adds points to J.D.'s bonafides. Did I mention the parking lot is a tad small? And not in the best shape? And usually full? Remember that last bit, there will be a test later.

Ok enough about the joint itself, on to the good stuff, and at J.D.'s that's a lot to discuss. Let's start with the portions; in a word, huge. Come hungry and be prepared to take some home. They pile it on, and they don't fill the plate with sides leaving you wondering if they hid the meat under the fries.

Best of all, J.D.'s uses an honest-to-God Hickory wood fired smoker for their meat, something that can't be duplicated in these so-called "rib shacks" that are stuck in a strip mall where soccer moms from foreign countries like New York or Michigan think they're getting real barbecue. To put it bluntly, that stuff is about as "real" as Ms. New York's tan. When it comes to 'cue, the non-smoking section is also the non-tastes-good section. If you think different, you might have latent New Jersey genes and should go dig up a good pasta recipe, if you can find one.

Menu wise, J.D.'s has pretty much the standard fare for a Georgia barbecue joint; pulled pork, chicken, ribs, baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, Brunswick stew...the usual. But where J.D.'s leaves the reservation is their beef brisket. Just thinking about it has my mouth watering right now. It's pure nirvana, and that's coming from a Georgia boy who grew up on pork barbecue. It comes to the table, sliced and arranged, the pinkish smoke ring clearly visible, with just a light splash of sauce...not that it needs any considering how moist the meat is, not to mention the exterior bark from the dry rub which adds an F-150 load of flavor. This is 'cue done right...like it used to be made before food Nazi's and meddling goody-two-shoes decided that everyone should live longer, if not miserable and hungry. Fork tender, this brisket melts in your mouth and imparts hints of smokiness along with a tinge of spice that will make your tastebuds party like it's 1899.

Before you get away thinking that the brisket is all that's good at J.D.'s, allow me to continue. The ribs...it's a shame in this world that men have gone to their graves without eating ribs half as good as J.D.'s. Ever eaten at a rib joint and thought that what they were feeding you might have been pulling a hay cart a few days ago? Yeah...they don't serve that at J.D.'s. The pulled pork also rates as some of the best I've ever had, and I've had plenty. I like mine without much sauce, (which they also make there at the joint), so I can enjoy that smoky goodness. And while I'm forbidden to try them due to my gluten thing, the monster sized pulled pork sandwiches could serve as a condo in some parts of the world. I've also had the barbecued chicken a few times, and it's good too (the white meat is always juicy and tender), but given a choice, I find myself drawn back to the ribs, the pork and the brisket...Lord help me, the brisket. I'm having a religious experience as you read this.

So in closing, before I drive myself crazy from thinking about it another minute, if you're close to Woodstock, GA anytime soon, do yourself a favor and drop into J.D.'s...and don't let the full parking lot fool you, park next door and walk.

Menu Monday

For over a year the Morrisketeers have been eating gluten free. This is not an easy task considering we were fast food junkies! There has been a complete turn around in how this family eats. We cook all of our meals at home now, only occasionally eating out (less than once a month). We make almost all of our dishes from scratch, down to and including salad dressing and seasoning mixes. I am so surprised at how much better our homemade salad dressing and seasoning mixes are than store bought items. We started making our own items just to be safe and not accidently eat gluten and to eliminate MSG but now we prefer homemade versus store bought. I know that My Beloved would like to personally thank Food Network for teaching his wife how to cook. When we first got married I could only make crappy spaghetti and sandwiches. Those sandwiches were pretty bad, I wouldn’t serve them to our dog now. Thank goodness My Beloved fell in love with me and not my cooking. But now days that has all changed, I have become quite the cook and I owe it solely to watching Food Network. I have learned so many techniques and tricks to make boring everyday things into fabulous meals. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be able to look in the pantry and know what to do with what we have on hand. Left over chicken easily becomes Cheesy Chicken Taquitos. I get all giddy looking at recipes in magazines and go out of my way to try exciting new dishes. Now I’m off to cook dinner….

Here is my recipe for Ranch Dressing:

1 teaspoon onion powder
1 tablespoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon paprika
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons sugar (optional)

Put all the dry ingredients in a canning jar and store. When you are ready to make dressing add:

1 cup mayonnaise
1 cup buttermilk

To turn this into an awesome dip add:

1 cup sour cream to the completed salad dressing.

Actually it was 2010 and we didn’t really sail we just visited but you get the picture. For two weeks now we have been studying Christopher Columbus. We were excited to find out that the Columbus Foundation would be bringing the Nina and Pinta to Chattanooga. (For more info visit www.thenina.com) As always the Morrisketeers love their field trips and this was no exception. We drove to Chattanooga and were able to go aboard both ships. It is remarkable at how small these ships are and that Columbus and his men were able to sail so far in such tiny vessels. This trip made everything we have been studying come to life. I love homeschooling!

1st Blogographer’s Meet-Up

Saturday was a fabulous day in Marietta Square, it was the first Blogographer's meet up arranged by Jamie from Seejamieblog. While there was some confusion and Jamie waited by the Marietta Welcome Center and the other bloggers waited by the fountain, it was still a great opportunity. My Beloved and the Miracle Child accompanied me on my trip to meet the bloggers. While I waited by the fountain the guys headed out and explored the square.

I spent the morning getting to know the Ellen, Tricia and Kim. My Beloved and the Miracle Child visited several shops and ended up buying a State Quarters Folder. The Miracle Child is obsessed with state quarters, it all started when we began shopping at Aldi. As you may know, Aldi requires a quarter to unlock the grocery cart. The cashier always has a new cart waiting at the register so we ever get our same quarter back. Miracle Child is always excited to see what new quarter he will get for his collection. Right now he has collected 16 of the 60 available state quarters. Yes, I know there are only 50 states but they have included in this collection the District of Columbia and Guam, etc...

So all and all the day was awesome. I made some new friends and my guys had a great time exploring. I can't wait to do it all over again!

Fall Vacation Morrisketeers Style

The Morrisketeers are trying to plan a small Fall vacation (ha ha it rhymes!). We want to go see the leaves change in the Great Smoky Mountains. My biggest problem with this trip is finding a place to stay. I have searched until my eyes have crossed. This is what I really hate about the internet...I have too many choices! I have found some of the most beautiful cabins with private indoor pools and spectacular game rooms. A three day weekend at these cabins cost more than my first car! So we have to "settled" for the cheap cabins and then I feel like I'm missing out on all the great stuff. I know I'm being ridiculous, we plan to be busy with all the Fall activities (craft shows, etc) and outlet malls that I'm sure none of us would really even care where we stay.
