How to Board and Batten Technique Tip

Oh, Board and Batten how I love thee! I first fell in love with you several years ago but you finally made your first appearance in my master bedroom about a year ago. ...And ever since then, my LOVE affair has grown! I want you in EVERY room of the house!
So, the next area that WE finally moved on to was the small wall between my pantry and the laundry room. Easy enough TWO boards or was it??

I am here to share with you a SUPER DUPER easy board and batten tip. I am not going to go into details of how to cut, measure, etc, because there are plenty of amazing tutorials out there in bloggy land but this little tip will save you some time! Instead of using Liquid Nails or nailing the boards to the wall you use HOT GLUE. Yes, you heard me correctly we use hot glue to stick the boards directly to the wall.

Instead of having to putty nail holes or waiting for the liquid nails to dry this technique, is fast and easy. There are a couple of items that are a MUST if using this technique.

You must have two people, one to hold the level on the wall and one to put the hot glue on the back of the board and stick it on the wall before it dries.
Hubby and I would measure the distance between boards, I would hold the level exactly where I wanted the board. Hubby would run the strip of hot glue down the back of the board and then butt the board up next to the level.
Make sure the board is lined up on the bottom and stick to wall. (we had several oops on this small wall, hard to believe that our entire bedroom wall was done faster than the two boards because of some simple mistakes that were made.)

Take two, removing hot glue that had dried because of some simple mistakes.

You must work FAST. The hot glue dries quickly so have your level ready while the other person lines the board up at the bottom and sides. PRESS HARD against the wall.
You must use a LARGE glue gun. We tried using our craft gun. No can do, the glue is dry almost immediately.
Use long glue sticks.
If you have to peel the board off the wall because it didn't get put down quick enough. Pull off with caution, it will rip your sheet rock.
After you place one or two boards you get in a groove and it will save you a TON of time.

Free Printable Young Women New Beginning's Invitation

It has been a CRAZY couple of days, eight year old party & invitations is about all I can come up with, yet I have been swamped all weekend. HMMM, I am going to have to think on that one. I wanted to post my Young Women's New Beginning's Invitations on Sunday but it didn't get done in time. So here it is, hopefully this can be of help! Our President came up with the theme and I created the invitation! :)

I printed the star below on vellum and then the red star shape on my Silhouette. You could use just a star stencil and card stock.. I attached the two together with ribbons that were the colors of the values, at the top. PERFECTO! The stars needs to be printed on an 8x10 sheet.

8x10 size jpeg. Right click and use save as. Open in any photo editing to add personal info.

Happy Lego Birthday & Free Lego Invitation

My little guys birthday is this weekend. I am so excited to be CELEBRATING his special day! He is such an ASSET to our family, we love him so much! He is such a HUGE help to his brother & sister. He is the peace maker in our family and has experienced a lot during his six and seven year old age, he will soon be EIGHT!

There are so many amazing Lego party ideas on Pinterest. Hopefully, this invitation will be a great start. I've included a blank copy for you.

To use it Follow the instructions:

Right click on the image and select save as. Save it on your hard drive somewhere you will remember, I usually place most things under documents.
Next open a photo editing program and open the document, (file, open.) or you will upload if you are using the free program online.
Go to the document location and double click.
Your document will now be open.
Here is where you will select a text box usually a "T" and add your little man's birthday information.
I use Photoshop most people don't. There are tons of free photo editing programs available online, PICNIK will be available until April. Picassa, to name a few.

Darling Lined Basket for under $5.00

Here is my guest post from TATERTOTS & Jello in case you missed it!!! A LINED basket including the basket for under $5.00! LEARN HOW!

Good Beautiful Day Tatertots and Jello Fans! I am glad to be back after a long winters nap, I had all of December off, no guest post, so I am thrilled to be sharing this DARLING TUTORIAL with each of you.

This should help with those organization projects that are BUZZING everywhere all over the internet. ..AND talk about inexpensive, the total cost of the project was under $5.00.

You will need:

wire basket; from Sam's Club under $4.00
fabric; I didn't keep track but used, maybe, a 1/4 of a yard, I bought two yards total, but ended up using a fraction of the fabric
cardboard piece; same size as the bottom.

Let's get this party started! You will measure the height, the length of both the long sides, the short sides, and the bottom, and give yourself a 1/2" inch seam allowance on each side.

These are the exact measurements that I used for the Sam's Club Basket, if you choose to purchase the same one, I would DEFINITELY double check the basket dimensions just to make sure they are the same sizes.

18" Length x 10" Height long sides x 2 {one for each side} - This will allow for a 1/2" inseam.
11" Length x 10" Height short sides x 2 {one for each side} - This will allow for a 1/2" inseam.
18" Length x 11" Width for the bottom - This will allow for 1/2 inch inseam.

Always double check your measurements, remember measure twice cut once.

The seams will be on the inside of this basket.

You will pin a short end to a long end, right sides together. You will notice there will be fabric overhang. Match up each edge and then pin in two little tucks to create a small pleat.

Sew the edges together with a 1/2" seam allowance.

You will repeat this same process four times, alternating short, long, short, long, the last step will be bringing the entire long strip of fabric together.

After the strips are sewn together you can now add the bottom of the basket. Match up the four corners with the seams on the short, long, short, long ends.

The liner is almost finished, just put a hem across the top that will be visible when you fold it over the metal part of the basket. The sewed a 1" hem doubled so you cannot see the raw edge.

You are almost DONE, the last part is the ribbon or fabric strips (I used). I took eight 11" x 2" pieces and sewed two onto each corner. This will allow you to tie the basket liner to the basket. I left the edges raw no hemming.

From each corner I measured six inches down from the top and two inches out from the corner inseam. I turned the fabric under and ran a simple 1/2" seam on each side, one on each corner and you are FINISHED!

CONGRATULATIONS, your adorable basket liner is ready to be placed and you spent under $5.00 including the basket!!

Put the basket liner in the basket and fold over the top wires, bring the ribbon around the outside of each wire and tie in a bow.

One last step because the basket isn't a solid wire I placed a cardboard piece in the bottom of the basket liner.

Cleaning Tip for Silk Plants & Accessories

Dear Sweet Peas:

I love to CLEAN! Sounds kind of funny right? Well, I am going to admit some of my deep, dirty, secrets, that my husband and I have been arguing about since we got married. ..And it is DEEP CLEANING! See, here is the issue he believes in picking up and my brain thinks that if I am going to be deep cleaning, I might as well just wait to clean everything all at once! So, if I am planning on cleaning the bathroom in four days, I will let the bathroom go for four days before I touch it. He is absolutely correct in his argument but my brain just doesn't work the same. Pick up throughout the day and everyday and you wouldn't have such a mess?! Case in POINT my PANTRY, I knew that I wanted to redo it but months later I finally had this mess to worry about as well as the painting!

Now, if I just would have picked up daily, my job would have been so much easier. So, knowing this I am trying to slowly change but deep cleaning is still the BOM! HOPEFULLY, this little tip of mine, will make your home just a little bit cleaner!

I do not own a living plant because I kill them, because of that, I have silk plants thoughout my home and the dust on them drive me crazy, especially, the greasy dust in the kitchen. You know, that film that covers everything because of the stove??

All of my accessories that fit and INCLUDING my silk plants go in the dishwasher. They come out SOOOO clean and not an ounce of dust or grease on them.

NOW, if you have something extremely valuable you might not want to do it because I can't guarantee how they will come out. I can tell you I have been washing my things in the dishwasher for years and it always works. I do have a chip here and there from my ceramic items but I usually just glue them back on. I have even put those cinnamon pine cones in the dishwasher. Name it as long as it fits it goes in, if it doesn't it is headed into my shower to wash off!

Oh, yea, and have you ever wondered how to clean those pesky chandelier lamp shades? How about in the dishwasher? They always come out EXTREMELY clean.

Just one of my many deep cleaning tips!! Hope it can make your cleaning a little bit easier!

Transitional Valentine to Spring Mantel

It is a beautiful Sunday isn't it? It is that time again to decorate the mantel and change out the winter decorations. A very welcome tradition in my home. I look so forward to every season or holiday change so I can refresh everything! One of my very first posts was about the center piece of every mantel, my great grandmother's clock. If you haven't read it please do so here.

I try to make my mantel as transitional as possible, meaning right after Valentine's day is Easter. Instead of a complete mantel overhaul, I remove the red flowers and add a array of Easter colored flowers with eggs, etc..

Join me as I transition my mantel into a happy, wish it were spring, Valentine mantel.

Personalized Birthday Gift Ideas

I love to help celebrate my friends birthdays, sometimes I am slow at getting them gifts and sometimes I miss there lunches but each of them are special to me! My husband and I, (I say husband because he loves to shop, but don't tell anyone because I would hate to ruin his reputation!) like to find fabulous gifts on sale and purchase a larger quantity for the year. It always seems if you think ahead, you get a much better gift, than if you are to go out on the day of the celebration. So, some of my stock piled gifts this year include water bottles for my son's friends and then some great scented candles for the sweet girls in my life. I love personalizing each gift. So this is how I went about it:

I cut vinyl from my Silhouette Machine, now, I know that not everyone has a Silhouette or Cricuit but you do not need one. You can still purchase vinyl and use paper punches, stencils, etc... to cut out the vinyl.
There are MANY different stickers that are available as well, rub ons, & even paint. So let your creativity juices flow. That is what makes each gift uniquely special!

So for this particular candle I cut out two scalloped circles and my dear friends initial and attached it to the candle. Before I attached the vinyl I wiped the candle off with alcohol, to ensure the vinyl or sticker would adhere to the glass.

The shape of the glass would not allow the circle to lie flat so I made a quick cut into the scalloped edge and overlapped the edges. VOILA perfect circle. Repeat with each one.

When the vinyl was finished, I wrapped the lid in some cute fabric.

I hot glued one edge of the fabric to the lid, pulled it tight, on the opposite side, glued it down and repeated on all sides. This created a tight, pucker free lid.

Tie a cute bow around the lid and your personalized gift is finished.

...And here is the Camelbak bottle that I have been giving my son's friends. You can pretty much personalize everything. Be creative. If your house is anything like mine everything will have a sticker or stamp on it! :)

Impossibility Challenge--Pantry Redo

Yes, dear sweet peas it is time for the BIG reveal! I joined the impossibility challenge at Thistlewood Farm and YES, my PANTRY became a POSSIBILITY, I CONQUERED. ...And it feels SOOOO good to have it done, a sense of accomplishment!

So before the big reveal let me show you what it USED to look like! The following pictures may contain images that could be offensive to ALL VIEWERS. Look at your own RISK!

I won't bore you with a how to, but I will share a couple of items that I found VERY useful in my PANTRY redo.

I painted the entire pantry. This transformed the pantry more than anything. I kept it simple because the thought of adding designs or anything else overwhelmed me. It doesn't have to be elaborate.
I purchased all like items. I really tried to keep it uniform. All organization materials came from Walmart. The most expensive item was the large flour jar at $9.00. The white bins were around $4.00.
Organize your pantry that will be most useful to your family because if they are not on board it isn't going to stay looking like this.

...And my newly organized PANTRY!

The critics are RAVING 10 out of 4 stars**********Can I just stand in here and admire your pantry**********It is so PRETTY and clean!

Of course, all of us know that pictures just don't do it justice! :)

Finding Joy in Our Divine Potential

Manual 1 Lesson 3

The Lesson doesn't give much guidance this time other than having a special sister in the ward come speak to the YW about the joy of being a woman. I will find someone and then incorporate the following different lessons:

Object Lesson: This is not my original idea but I did incorporate it into this lesson. I will focus the lesson on setting small goals throughout their lives so that when they get older they will have accomplished the smaller ones so that the smaller ones turn into major ones. ex, high school to college, attending church to temple, etc...

You will need: Ping Pong Ball, Glass quart jar with lid, wheat to fill the jar.

Put the ping pong ball in and put a small scoop of wheat with every goal the girls come up with. After the jar is about 2" from top put the lid on and gentle shake showing the girls it is gradual steps that will find their Divine Potential. The ping pong ball will arise to the surface.

The printable is from a quote from President Monson, that I LOVED! It will wrap around a play watch or plastic hourglass. I do not have it tonight so when I go to the party store tomorrow I will take a picture of the completed project and post, I wanted to get this up in hopes that it can help someone with their lesson.

So, in the HOPE that I can make you feel really good about your house and day let me show you some before pictures. Then my after pictures should be that much more stunning RIGHT?!

I am not going to bore you with any details in the how, but I am going to share this little tip:

If you think that you would like to do a pantry makeover, do not let it go for three months before hand or it will look like this. I just kept telling myself, "Why clean it because I am going to make it look, GREAT." This is why you keep up on your PANTRY. So it doesn't look like this before the REDO!

That is it, that is the only advise I have! Have a great day knowing your pantry doesn't look anything like this!

Messy Hair Monday Leave in Conditioner Recipe

Do you remember this post? If not let me refresh your memory. My peanut, so happily, sat in a chair while I applied LEAVE in CONDITIONER and rolled her hair in pink sponge curlers. Well, an ever so sweet Connie from Measured by the Heart stopped by and left her very own recipe for LEAVE in CONDITIONER! What a tutorial to share!! BELOW is her post copied, directly from her blog! It’s time for another edition of Quirky Tip of the Day!! {Imagine that said in a cheesy game show hosts voice} But in all seriousness people, this is an excellent tip.

How to make your own Leave in conditioner!! I use this daily on my girls hair. We have long thick hair in this family and no matter what I do, we play the tangle game. I promise you things go easier if you use this on those tangles.

I’m also all about use what you have and since I cannot always run to the store in the morning before school {when we realize we have run out} this recipe is a must have!!

I use a spray bottle this size. You can find them everywhere. If not in the hair aisle, check the cleaning supplies or garden areas. These size bottles are so much better. They hold a lot so you are not refilling all the time and they spray well. It gives better easier coverage.

Making this is VERY simple. All you do is put some of your regular conditioner into the bottle. For this size bottle, I use 1/4- 1/2 cup. I don’t really measure, I just have gotten used to how much {approximately} it takes.

The next step is important. You must use HOT water. If you don’t, the conditioner won’t mix with the water and you will have cold water and lumps of conditioner. You need HOT water for it to mix together.

Fill up the bottle with HOT water but leave about 2 inches from the top empty. You need this empty space to be able to shake the mixture up.

And that’s all folks!! If you find you like more conditioner in your mixture you can use more but be careful. If you put too much the hair will become saturated. Like when you haven’t rinsed enough after a shower. But feel free to play around with it. This is a total lifesaver in a family with 3 little girls.

So there you have it. Leave in conditioner. Simple. Easy. Works.

Paint Can Tip

Wandering Wednesday's Painting Tip

So, for the past two days I have been painting like crazy, all in the name of trying to get my pantry organized. The best part of it all, is that I haven't even started on my pantry. WOW, I have some work ahead of me! I will have a fun redo project, clean and crisp, SWEET! ...But for now, I have a SUPER DUPER EASY Painting tip that will solve A LOT of your messy paint can issues.

This is what you need:

Take the screwdriver and place it on the inside lip of the paint can, hit it will the hammer until it breaks through into the paint. Be careful you don't hit to hard because the screwdriver will be covered in paint. Repeat, all of the way around. You will notice in my last picture it creates small holes for the paint to run back into the can, as you are painting and pouring. My sweet sis in law showed me this little trick many, many, years ago. It has made my painting can cleanup so much simpler!

Corn, Bacon, & Potato Chowder Soup Recipe

Taco Tuesday is a Recipe that I found on Pinterest. It looked and sounded delicious but me being me, added, added some more, & then a little bit more, until I turned the recipe into my own. :)

So here is my version of the Weight Watcher Chowder: Oh yea, I should warn you mine isn't a Weight Watcher version...

Ingredients

1 medium uncooked potato
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 cup(s) uncooked celery, chopped
1/4 cup(s) uncooked onion(s), chopped (or 1 large shallot)
1 1/2 cups frozen corn
1 cup(s) sweet red pepper(s), diced
4 oz uncooked Canadian-style bacon, diced
2 cup(s) whole milk
1 can chicken broth
1 1/2 tablespoons of chicken base
1/2 tsp table salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 1/2 tablespoons corn starch
5 to 10 shakes of hot pepper sauce, or to taste
Instructions
Melt butter in a large sauce pan. Add celery, onion, corn and red pepper; sauté over medium-high heat for 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, chop potato into fine pieces & bacon.
Stir bacon, chicken broth, chicken base, and potato into saucepan; Season with salt, pepper and hot pepper sauce; stir to combine. Cover and simmer for about hour and half on low. About 10 minutes before serving, combine cold milk and corn starch, add to the hot soup and stir until thickened.
Serve with warm bread!

It is a Valentine kind of day! I love sharing my creations but time to keep it real. Unfortunately, the posts don't always go as planned but neither does life right?! I mean if my posts were going as planned I would have CUTE little pictures highlighting the adorable things you can do with these tags but instead I have been out of ink the past two days and two posts later, no pictures.:) So here I go, PRINT, CUT, & ENJOY! Here is a Free Printable & Object Lesson.

Object Lesson: I am going to provide an object under each girl's chair that will be able to do a crayon rub on, ex: leaf, lace, anything with a texture, etc.. Each object will be assigned a trait, whether it is good (following Jesus), or bad (stealing, drugs, etc)... The girls will rub a crayon on top of their trait and they will be able to see that each behavior rubs off whether it is a good or a bad behavior. I think the most effective part of the object lesson is this, even though you may not be participating with your friends that are choosing a bad activity it will still rub off on you.
