You know that feeling you get, when you're looking around a room in your home, thinking "Gee, I'm kind of tired of this look. I'd like to shake things up in here"? Or you might even mutter those awful words, "I HATE THIS ROOM! I CAN'T STAND TO LOOK AT IT!"

I usually go with the latter statement, then search magazines and Web sites and watch decorating shows for ways to redo the object of my disdain. I come up with some fabulous ideas, then I visit my checkbook register and think, "Hmmm. Maybe this room isn't that bad. I mean really, it's not so bad at all. I do still like that wall color. And that couch looks okay when you don't look at that stain my son left by spilling Gatorade on it last month. And what happened to my paycheck? I mean where did my money go? Oh yeah, food and utilities..."

Well, I can tell you that I don't give up, because I'm no quitter! I get creative and find ways to redecorate for just a little money, and you can do it too. Let's say you have only $100 to spend on redoing a room. You may not be able to buy that new leather couch you're in love with, but you can change things enough to revive that space, and here are some ideas on how to do it:

Linens: If the room that has you down in the decorating dumps is your bedroom, all you may need are new linens to change your look. Stores like Target offer lots of affordable quilts and comforters, and even sets that include shams, sheets, and pillowcases. If you can't afford a set you like, just go for new sheets and pillowcases and a new throw pillow or two. Also check out the draperies section for new panels, or make your own with fabric or sheets.

Paint: Painting your walls is the obvious choice when you want to change a room, but you don't have to stop at the walls. You can paint furniture (especially tables and wooden chairs), accessories (such as frames), a mantel, your woodwork (doors, moulding), and cabinetry (for your kitchen or bathroom).

Accessories: Hit a flea market, discount store, or anywhere else that has great prices, and load up on accessories. Artwork, hardware (like new glass knobs), bulletin boards (to display family photos), or whatever strikes your fancy. Pillows can change the look of a couch you're tired of, too.

Rugs: Some area rugs are very affordable, and a colorful one can create an anchor or focal point for your room. And remember, rugs don't have to go on the floor. I've seen lovely rugs used as wall art with beautiful results.

Rearrange: It can be less than $100--it can even be free. Remove accessories and knickknacks and art from a few rooms and set it all up l in one area. Start creating new vignettes you never considered because the items were dispersed in different rooms.

It's true, changing the decor of a room can be tough when your budget is small. But with some imagination, time, and effort, you'll be surprised at what you can do.

" vspace="3">My life is currently consumed with one thing: college. No, I am not going back to school. I graduated more than 20 years ago. But my dear daughter has just begun her last semester of high school, has been accepted to the college of her choice, and is oh-so-very ready to pack her bags and move out of town.

In order to divert my attention from the horrible thought that my first-born will be leaving the nest at the end of the summer, I turn my thoughts to the obvious topic: home decorating. Okay, a few other things are on my mind, but this is the one we have been talking about for a few days. All because my dear son, also a teenager but younger than his sister, announced to us his fabulous idea: when sis leaves, he should move into her bedroom. Although I explained that sis will be home for breaks and summers and isn't permanently leaving us, he still contends that as the child who will still be "stuck" at home, he should have the larger bedroom. Although I resent (just a teeny bit) the idea that being "stuck" at home is so awful, I did sort of see his point. His room is quite small, and filled with video-game equipment that takes up most of the space. Even his sister saw his point, and granted her blessing for the room switch, as long as we wait until she's gone.

How will we do this, however, when most of our funds will be tied up in the higher education of my oldest? Time to get uber creative, as I will be tackling two rooms in my home and helping my daughter with her dorm-room decorating all in the same month this summer. This is gonna to be fun! (I think...) More news later on how I will accomplish all of this with my ever-dwindling bank account.

As promised, I have searched the World (Wide Web, that is) to find utterly fabulous and not-too-pricey holiday gifts, all focused on home decorating. Here they are, in no particular order:

Art: It's the perfect gift for someone with a new place, or an old place with some blank walls. If you know your gift recipient's taste, pick out some artwork to brighten up their space. I love, love, love Lisa Kaus's work. Her Mini-Prints are only $20, and even the Big Prints are only $58. Her Cards are also frame-worthy and adorable. (See a photo below.)

Dinnerware: If you're a child of the 1960s and 1970s like I am, this dinnerware might just throw you back to your youth for a few nostalgic moments. This Floral Melamine Dinnerware is much prettier than the pea-green and rose-colored Melamine plates my mom used to have. In fact, they're so pretty, they would be great everyday dinnerware. And they are a bargain, with plates starting at just $3 a piece.(See a photo below.)

Do-It-Yourself Help: I can't think of ANYONE who wouldn't love a gift card to The Home Depot or Lowes. And it's the perfect gift for someone with a new home.

Furniture: You might not want to buy expensive furniture for anyone, but how about a practical, budget-conscious piece for the teen in your life? Or perhaps the recently-out-of-college cousin? I found this Futon Armchair at IKEA, and I'm planning to get one for my daughter, who goes off to college next fall. Perfect for a dorm room, and only $89.

Entertaining Advice: Have a friend who loves to throw parties? Or one who wants to entertain more? I found the perfect book: I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence, by Amy Sedaris. For less than $20, you can give the gift of true advice from the comedic genius herself.

Home Goods: Isaac Mizrahi now designs home items for Target, in addition to his clothing line. My personal fave from the line is his Peony Bedding, which I plan to buy for my daughter this Christmas.

So in my opinion, holiday food is one of the most important parts of this season, second only to spending time with family and friends. I won't attempt to roast a pig, because it will make me too homesick. But I did find 50+ Holiday Recipes at RealSimple.com, and I'm definitely giving some of these recipes a shot.
So take a deep breath and don't panic. I know you've heard it a million times before and you might not believe it, but the holidays don't have to drive you over the edge. The key is to plan, plan, plan. I currently have four pages dedicated to the holidays in my organizer. One includes home decor ideas, one covers food, the other holiday-related errands to run, and the last is a very extensive list of gift ideas.

In the next week or two, I'll post some home decor gift ideas I have found on the Web and in the stores. In the meantime, check this out--Martha Stewart has some fabulous Handmade Gift ideas on her site.
