MORE

The New Hampshire Preservation Alliance, the statewide non-profit membership organization dedicated to the preservation of historic buildings, resources and landscapes, announces that it is sponsoring two educational sessions at the 2012 Farm & Forest Expo February 3- 4 at the Center of New Hampshire, Radisson Hotel, in Manchester. Both sessions are free and open to the public to Expo attendees. Expo information athttp://nhfarmandforestexpo.org.

“How to Read Your Barn” will be offered on Friday, February 3 from 9 – 11 am in the Frost/Hawthorne Room. Arron Sturgis of Preservation Timber Framing Inc. will present and lead a discussion on historic barns with a focus on how these barns were built and how they were used. Sturgis will share tips to determine the age of a barn by examining its timber frame joinery, architectural features (doors and windows) and its orientation on the land. He will also explore some of the common and unusual features of New England barns such as hay tracks, internal silos, and integrated loft ladders. Participants are invited to bring their own barn pictures to share. The session is co-sponsored by the N.H. Historic Agricultural Structures Advisory Committee, the N.H. Preservation Alliance and the N.H. Division of Historical Resources.

“New Models for Saving Historic Farm Properties” will be offered on Friday, February 3, from 12 – 2 pm in the Hale Room. As long-standing patterns of family ownership yield to economic necessity, many of New Hampshire’s most historic and scenic farm properties are being offered for sale with little assurance that they will remain as signature elements of their community’s heritage and economy. How can these historic agricultural properties be saved from becoming house lots or highways, and how might current trends affect outcomes? What can be done to include historic structures in business plans and conservation efforts? What economic models and partnerships are logical in such efforts? This roundtable discussion will present promising new efforts and explore strategies to blend conservation, preservation and agriculture. Case studies will include Battles Farm, Bradford; Dimond Hill Farm, Concord; Putnam Farm, Cornish; Town of Lee; and Goss Farm, Rye. The audience will be invited to share other examples as well.

Panelists include Steve Taylor, former NH Commissioner of Agriculture; John Porter, UNH Cooperative Extension; preservationist Linda Ray Wilson; and Jennifer Goodman, Executive Director, NH Preservation Alliance.

Sponsors for the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance’s programs include the Otto Fund of the NH Charitable Foundation, PSNH, and The 1772 Foundation with additional support from Arnold M. Graton Associates, Inc., Bedard Preservation & Restoration, LLC, Ian Blackman, LLC, Farms & Barns, Fifield Building Restoration & Relocation, Frank R.

Concord, NH- Give Kids A Smile and dentists across New Hampshire will help kick-off this year's National Children's Dental Health month on Friday, February 3, 2012, by offering children from low-income families free dental services, including dental examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants.

Last year, more than 9,235 dentists and 28,481 volunteers participated in Give Kids A Smile day by providing care to an estimated 396,877 children nationwide. The event, supported by the American Dental Association (ADA), has been held each year since 2003. Here in the Granite State, the New Hampshire Dental Society and the Northeast Delta Dental Foundation are annual supporters of this campaign.

According to the American Dental Association, oral health is closely linked to overall health, and dental disease is the most prevalent childhood disease. Dental disease is also almost completely preventable through regular dental visits, brushing, flossing and access to fluoride.

"While there is still a lot to do, we have seen real progress in getting children better access to dental care in New Hampshire," says Jim Williamson, from the New Hampshire Dental Society. "For example, progress has been made in Manchester in partnership with local clinics, and we have seen a big drop in need."

In most locations, dentists will provide free dental services in cooperation with local schools. To learn more about enrolling a child in a Give Kids A Smile clinic, parents should talk to their child's school nurse or dental office as soon as possible.

Waterville Valley, N.H.-Long before there was a “Dixville Notch” primary, there was a midnight primary in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, capturing national attention in 1952, and every four years into the 1960s. In that very first New Hampshire Primary about a dozen voters cast their votes at midnight, giving the majority to Dwight Eisenhower.

The Waterville Valley Primary had garnered national media attention and attracted a pair of unlikely tourists. H.A. & Margret Rey, authors and illustrators of the Curious George books, took the train up to see Democracy in action – as refugees from the Nazi’s march across Europe they had a special appreciation for voting. If the primary was the attraction, the Reys were drawn to Waterville Valley because H.A. was revising his popular Astronomy book The Stars: A New Way to See Them and needed a place away from the glare of city lights to do observation. In 1958, the Reys constructed a summer cottage in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. They quickly fell in love with the tiny town and spent the next twenty summers there, writing, drawing, and charming the community.

H.A. was a Renaissance man, versed in history and natural history. Margret was a potter, photographer and expert gardener. Locals and visitors were drawn to their little home—now known as the Curious George Cottage—which soon became an intellectual and creative center for the town, and best of all, provided the magical opportunity to watch children's book authors at work. Children would come and watch as H.A. drew new adventures for George or his other characters. At other times, H.A. would take the children on nature walks and delight them with his talent of throwing his voice.

The Rey Center honors the legacy of Margret and H.A. Rey, children's book author and illustrator of the Curious George series, Whiteblack the Penguin, and The Stars: A New Way to See Them. The Rey Center has a new observatory in Waterville Valley, from which stargazers will have an exceptional view of the heavens.

In 1949, Richard Upton helped pass legislation allowing the people to vote directly for the candidates instead of for delegates. In 1952, New Hampshire voters cast their votes in the states first true primary. In 1977, delegate names were removed from the ballot and a law that eliminated any possible future encroachment on the state’s primary being the first in the nation was enacted. It has been the first primary in the nation since that law in 1977.

Waterville Valley has a long political tradition. In the 1960’s, Robert Kennedy helped his friend Tom Corcoran –a two time Olympic skier – permit and finance the world-class ski resort. After Robert Kennedy’s death in 1969, the popular “Bobby’s Run” was renamed in his honor.

In 2010, the Sununu family purchased the resort, keeping ownership under local control. John Sununu was the governor of New Hampshire for three consecutive terms in the 1980’s.

Waterville Valley was designed and planned specifically as a self-contained, four seasons resort. Today in addition to its world-class ski area, Waterville Valley Resort has award-winning tennis courts, golf, hiking, biking, lodging, cultural activities and summer theater, an indoor ice rink, boating, a skate park, and a host of outdoor activities. Dining options include traditional favorites and elegant dining. For more information, call 1-800-GO-VALLEY or visit www.visitwatervillevalley.com /www.visitwatervillevalley.com.

New Year’s is the time to make resolutions for a more healthy, active lifestyle for your family, and KidsRule Mountain Camps are the best way to achieve that resolution.

KidsRule Mountain Camps are based on the successful learning programs at Jiminy Peak, Cranmore Mountain Resort, and Bromley Mountain, three New England mountains known for their heritage of superior skiing and riding instruction across generations of families. KidsRule Mountain Camps combine the best practices of more than 120 years of teaching experience to offer a fresh approach to instruction.

According to three resorts’ CEO, Brian Fairbank, “Skiing and snowboarding are effective ways to keep children and adults active in winter Learning to ski or ride early creates the potential for a lifetime avocation that can get children and adults out of the house each winter.”

A Healthy 2012

The KidsRule Mountain Camps are supportive of the national “Let’s Move!” campaign that raises awareness of the national childhood obesity crisis and focuses on getting children physically active and outside. The “Let’s Move” website (www.letsmove.gov) recommends keeping children focused on their own health, staying active and eating well - and in winter, snow sports are a great way to stay healthy. Some of the pillars of the campaign are to encourage children to try a new physical activity, and to for families to find time to spend together doing a fun activity.

Skiers/Riders head to the slopes over the holiday break

If Christmas week 2011 was any indication, many families are already making the move to the slopes. Collectively, the three resorts’ Kids Rule enrollment numbers were up over last year, and came close to having a record year. Fairbank chalks up the increase to the resorts’ focus on snowmaking and learning terrain for the holiday period.

On the heels of their successful holiday week, the resorts are now rolling out special deals to families as part of their January “White Sale.” All three mountains will give families $15 off all online 2-day reservations for KidsRule Mountain Camps for midweek/non-holiday periods. This discount is on top of the programs’ already generous program which gives kids a resort season pass after completing four KidsRule Camps at Cranmore or six KidsRule Camps at Bromley or Jiminy Peak.

Each mountain also features a money-saving E-coupons savings program. Families are encouraged to visit each resorts’ website to see the latest deals, which offer deeply discounted lift tickets and more.

Jiminy Peak, Bromley and Cranmore offer a wide range of seasonal activities.

This time of year, ski resorts often focus solely on making snow for their advanced level of terrain. But in addition to heavy snowmaking on advanced trails, three partnered mountains are bringing a lot more to the table this week. With the Holiday vacation week fast approaching, Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Western Massachusetts, Bromley Mountain in Southern Vermont and Cranmore Mountain in New Hampshire’s White Mountains have blanketed their learning and beginner trails with snow. Why? Because of their commitment to the new KidsRule Mountain Camps.

Cold weather and extensive snow making has allowed beginner trails to open at all three ski areas, which provides the best learning experience for kids enrolled in the KidsRule Mountain Camps (and piece of mind for parents).

The three resorts’ CEO, Brian Fairbank said, “With the challenging start to the snow season, the large state-of-the-art snow making investments that all three mountains have made is now paying off. With cold weather in place in the region, all three are pumping out massive amounts of snow.”

Being sure there is good snow to learn on is just the beginning. The KidsRule camps also take a new approach to ski and snowboard education - one based on safety, learning life long techniques and helping each child learn at their own pace. This emphasis will allow the new KidsRule Mountain Camps to take center-stage for the upcoming vacation week.

All three resorts enter this season pooling their resources to offer the comprehensive KidsRule children’s snowsports program that builds on fun and the rapid development of skills for kids age 3 to 14. And, many facilities and lifts have been upgraded at each resort for the program. Combine this with aggressive snowmaking over the last few weeks and the Kids Rule program has “come to life” at all three resorts.

“We have snow on all of our beginner trails because of our commitment to KidsRule,” said Fairbank. “Snow is a priority at KidsRule Mountains, and we want to assure everyone that we’re ready to make any holiday ski trip memorable.”

The new Bromley Snowsports School Director, Burleigh Sunflower said that the snow is just part of the approach, “The dedicated learning centers at all three resorts have been designed with families in mind. From ease of registration, to a ‘one-stop’ approach to the rental process, we’ve built-in convenience as part of the program.”

Advance reservations are recommended. For more information and to reserve a spot, visit http://www.kidsrulecamps.com/.
