The manager, whose group was to be called Hot☆Spots, had solicited prospective members aged between 10 and 22 and living in northwestern cities in the prefecture through the distribution of leaflets and the Internet. Auditions had been planned for the end of February with the group debuting in April. Several application had been received, the paper said.

In the months after the Great East Japan Earthquake and the meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on March 11 last year, radiation “hot spots” were discovered in some areas of Chiba, including Kashiwa City.

Local citizens said the plan to form the idol group lacked common sense. “It is different from our vision,” said a representative from the Kashiwa City radiation counter-plan office. “We would like to have a more pleasing image for the city.”

“I failed to consider the uneasy feelings others had with the plan,” the manager is quoted by the Asahi. “In the end it was shallow.”

Yukio Nishimura, a 60-year-old member of an organized crime group, and Yozo Fujita, 42, were taken into custody for attempting to smuggle 1.7 kilograms of stimulant drugs through the Osaka International Ferry Terminal.

According to the Mainichi Broadcasting System, on January 19, Nishimura entered the country from a ferry that departed from Shanghai, China with a suitcase containing the drugs, which were inside 10 plastic bags. Police estimated the value of the drugs to be 135 million yen.

Nishimura has reportedly denied the allegations, telling police he was asked to only look after a suitcase by a Chinese man and woman. Fujita, however, has admitted involvement, saying he heard that Nishimura had paid 1 million yen.

Japan posted its first trade deficit since 1980 last year after suffering the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami, which paralyzed most of the nation’s nuclear energy output and greatly increased the cost of energy. Additionally, the slowing global economy and Eurozone debt crisis are driving up the value of the yen as traders seek safety, further raising the cost of the nation’s exports. 

The surplus in returns from overseas investments has mitigated some of the declines stemming from Japan’s export-driven economy, according to Reuters. Earnings from overseas assets rose nearly 20% to $182 billion (14.03 trillion yen).

Analysts also worry that further declines in Japan’s current account could threaten the government’s ability to finance its large deficit, which stands at nearly twice the size of the nation’s $5 trillion economy, Reuters said.

The current account is the broadest measure of trade with the rest of the world.

Makiyo, suspected of being drunk at the time, was a passenger in the car with two other Taiwanese actresses and a male companion from Japan when the altercation started, according to the paper. The male friend, identified as Takateru Tomoyori, was arrested Friday for allegedly attacking the driver who remains in intensive care with two fractured ribs and a concussion, the Times said.

Makiyo is suspected to have kicked the taxi during the altercation and could be charged with damage to personal property and aggravated assault, the Times said. The two other actresses, A-tzu and Hsiang-ying, were questioned after the incident and released without bail.

Local reports say the altercation started when the taxi driver asked the four to wear their seatbelts and they refused. At a press conference, Makiyo said her male companion came to her defense after the taxi cab driver tried to fondle her when she was paying the cab fare; the man’s family denies the charge and passersby who witnessed the fight said the taxi driver never tried to defend himself, according to the Times.

The temperature was last reported at 70 degrees Celsius after hovering recently at around 45 degrees. Only one thermometer in the reactor is showing the rise; two other heat monitoring devices are unchanged, NHK reported.

TEPCO has been unable to pinpoint the cause of the temperature rise. The utility said plumbing work done in late January at the plant may be to blame.

Tokyo Electric has increased the amount of cooling water it normally injects into the reactor to cool the nuclear fuel. That effort so far has failed to show any results, NKH said.

The 23-year-old man was unconscious and bleeding from an ear when he was found, according to Kyodo. The Osaka prefectural police believe he may have fallen from a six-story building.
