The Invention of Lying

The Invention of Lying, directed by Ricky Gervais, featuring Jonah Hill and Jennifer Garner, holds spot #3 on our list of top online movie rentals today. Should it be in this spot? Some think so, others say no. Here is the latest review:

In a movie review on February 03 entitled No Pants Were Set On Fire In The Making Of This Film, draftyrafters wrote, “At the start of THE INVENTION OF LYING, I thought immediately of the comedian Daniel Tosh. In his album True Stories I Made Up, he makes this statement as one of his jokes: “You wanna make your life better with zero work on your part? Start lying about everything in your life.” Tosh’s album came out four years before this movie, and it seems like that line is the direct heart behind the film’s whole premise.

The movie takes place in a fictional world where the concept of lying has never existed. What this means is that fiction is nonexistent, so movies are simply protracted history lectures. It also means (as Gervais has envisioned it) that the human race has evolved to lack any tact whatsoever. People don’t just tell the truth; they tell it without any provocation and every chance they get.

There’s a difference between honesty and full disclosure, but the movie doesn’t care about that. It’s funnier (for a little while, anyway) to watch everyone give their unfiltered opinions of each other without twitching an eye. It’s as if the Earth is filled with erudite children. The world is immature, but it is also placidly and ably vocal about it.

Mark (Gervais’s character) is a put upon fellow, mainly because he’s so pudgy (an observation that Gervais’s script makes literally two or three dozen times), but when he develops the “ability” to lie, just as Tosh predicted, his life becomes instantly better. Since deception has never been conceived of, the world believes his every word, and thus he gets everything he’s ever wanted.

With the exception of Anna (Jennifer Garner). The first half of the movie, if not repetitive, is still fun (not the least of which for the numerous cameos — Tambor, Norton, Hoffman, Fey, and many others). However, when Mark accidentally creates the concept of heaven and a “man in the sky,” things begin to spiral out of hand. Both for him, and for the plot.

At this point, the movie, fumbling with such a grand premise, chooses to focus on Mark’s attempted wooing of Anna, who loves Mark, but can’t bring herself to be with him because of his weak “genetic code.” The problem here is that Gervais seems interested in Anna solely because she’s so hot. Otherwise she’s as clueless, selfish, and inconsiderate as the rest of the world. Likewise, much is made of how much fun Anna has with Mark, but their times together are always cut off before the audience is allowed to see any kind of real chemistry.

Lacking that chemistry, the film becomes a vehicle for an old moral: don’t judge a book by its cover. This could’ve been a complex statement, considering that Gervais’s cover is not just pudgy but also riddled now with lies, but the movie turns it into the simplest of valentines. It should also be pointed out that the second half of the film feels very much like a promotion of atheism or — at the very least — a explanation of what Gervais believes is at the heart of both humanity and religion, namely, more selfishness and a complete disavowal of personal responsibility. To religious believers, the film will certainly come across as a slap in the face, although I doubt it was intended as such.” This reviewer gave The Invention of Lying a 3 star rating.

What the heck?

Next, I hate the way this kid sings. His voice sounds like a robot and he pronounces his words in an anoying way. The beat in the background sounds cheap. This song was created on a computer I’m not kidding.

In conclusion, this is an insult to one man bands who had to work their butts off and didn’t recieve their fame this easily and fast.

Owl City needs to go up and apoligize to Prince and Todd Rundgren who worked hard for their fame and really played all of their intruments. Disgusting!

Anyway, onto the song. It’s not that bad really. It’s better than Poker Face but not as catchy as LoveGame. But then again, it’s not as annoying as either after repeated plays either.

It features a beat that could easily have been from the 90s and vocals that again, are OK but seem uninspired and like she doesn’t really care to bring the song to life. I must admit though, I could tolerate hearing this on the radio sometimes like I could tolerate LoveGame. The chorus is pretty decent. It’s not earth-shattering or anything, but it’s really, really tolerable (which I didn’t seem to notice during her VMA’s perfomance). The only thing I could do without is the 90s beat. It almost feels like a Britney throwaway.

But yeah. For current top 40s stuff, it’s not that bad.

3.25 stars would fit it perfectly, but my final rating is a:

On January 30, this reviewer said: “After lots of careful research, I decided to go with this Samsung TV based on customer reviews and professional reviews. I am very glad to say that I am completely satisfied with this purchase. The picture is great and the inputs in the back are sufficient to satisfy the needs of a bedroom/office TV. Xbox 360, PC, Standard Def Cable, HDMI, all of the inputs necessary are available here. Granted, there is only really one, maybe two of each type of input, but likely you are not buying a 32in TV to be your media center in your living room. If you are, I would suggest either looking at a larger size or possibly the SONY - KDL series TV’s.

Either way, this is the bottom line: if you are in the market for the best bang-for-your-buck second TV, this is your best bet. Sony and Panasonic have some good TV’s at this size and near this price range, but in my opinion, this TV has the best picture of the three. Another thing: do not worry about this set being 720p. 720p is plenty at this screen size, so save yourself some money and stick with a 720p/1080i TV. The only reason I could find to go with a 1080p 32in TV would be if you intend to use it as a computer monitor, but even that might be overkill for some people. In addition, you may want to check out the calibration settings for this TV on CNET.com. I used these setting and it makes the picture even richer.

My final note: if you are thinking about buying a 32in TV, stop right now and buy this one. You will enjoy it. I bought this from amazon.com and they delivered the TV the very next day! After months of reading and researching online (thanks Retrevo, CNet, Consumer Reports, Amazon, Vanns) and browsing at local stores (thanks to Best Buy, HH Gregg, Wal-Mart, Target, CompUSA), I came across Amazon’s great deal for this Samsung (LN52B750). Just days earlier I was convinced I was going to end up purchasing the Sammy 55″ LED (UN55B8000), but with a price above $2K, I was hesitant to pull the trigger. I was digging the LED for its contrast ratio, black levels, and energy features. But, after reading the specs and reviews for this LCD, I was ready to drop less money for a seemingly comparable set. I can honestly say, the reviews don’t lie. Good and not so good. This set is great. Black level is comparable to Plasma - and I should know as I have a 42″ Sammy Plasma. The 240Hz configuration is okay. True, it looks like you could reach into the TV and touch the people as evidenced by my viewing of Lost last night. I was blown away. However, the draw back is that there can be some blur/lag when characters move quickly or the camera pan changes. Its not a deal breaker to me by any means. In fact, you can just turn off the 240 scan and the picture is still beautiful. Playing COD Modern Warfare 2 on my PS3 is unbelievable. Blu-Ray movies are incredible. For it’s size, it really doesn’t take up much more room than my previous 40″ LCD. I haven’t dug into the internet features too much. Blockbuster on-demand looks interesting, but I can’t really comment on this yet. Bottom line for me is that this is a fantastic set for the price ($1699) and throwing in the Sammy BD player was icing on the cake. I should mention that I ordered on Tuesday 2:30 EST and the TV was delivered by Pilot Freight on Friday at noon EST. The considerable time I spent shopping stores looking at Toshiba, Sylvania, LG, Haier, Vizio, and the big-box stores’ private labels verified that the LN22B360 is best value on the market in this screen size. Not only does it have an outstanding picture, its also cosmetically attractive with a smaller frame and glossy black finish.

I’ve had this set for about 6 weeks and must confess that the picture is so outstanding that at times I find myself abandoning my Sony big screen to watch the 22″ set in our den. As long-time Sony fan, I had originally purchased a Sony 26″, but it was a bit tight for the space. No complaints about the sound which is appropriate for the room we’re using the TV in.

I heard this song on the radio and could not believe the total lack of vocal ability. Her voice has no range. It is strained, thin, nasally, and frequently out of tune. I can imagine some people thinking: “Hey, give her break. She’s only 19!” May I remind you that Jewel was the same age when she recorded “Pieces of You”. The lyrics on that recording show a lot of maturity and insight. The music is a typical pop song with some pedal steel & a little banjo (plucked like a guitar so it doesn’t sound to “country” to the new audience of country music fans.) A “singer” like Katy Perry would have been comfortable recording this song. Needless to say, I do not understand what the hype is all about regarding Taylor Swift. I think it’s just because she has a pretty face and she seems like a nice, down to earth, girl.

In conclusion, I would like to say that I think the new Nashville has forgotten it’s heritage. It began in the 1950’s when it was trying to meet the challenge of rock n roll by establishing a slicker production style and more pop oriented material. Nashville has finally sold it’s soul to the cult of mass marketing and mediocrity. Taylor Swift is a good example of this.

As the Rock genre reaches into the 21st Century seasoned listeners being introduced to a new song can often find it like reaching into a memory or a feeling established by some past time when music brought a new emotion to life. Within or outside the legacy of Tears For Fears, the open and sensitive listener will find several touches of the familiar mixed with the new in Curt Smith’s “All Is Love”.

If permitted to bring our suitcases of musical pasts as listeners with Curt Smith, we recognize a fine thoughtful moment distinct with self reflection opens in the lyrics, “Look what you’ve done…”. The expression hangs with tones of regret in passing moment or past contrition. This familiar touchstone comes forward to remind the listener our childhoods are always with us. We react to the statement as though it were a question. Now as adults, many of us as parents, a reflexive “What have we done?” comes to mind and the suggestion to “look”.

In understanding the beginning of Curt Smith within Tears For Fears, the question remain the same, how are making life better for another generation? What have we done when faced within the cycle of parent to child to the issue of the upbringing, the shaping of another life?

The introduction opens with delicate pensive vocals set against the cello of Zoë Keating and strikes a classical tone that never really dips into melancholy but rather a mild dissonant introspection and the glances of our human foibles. As the piece unfolds we find moments of questions that confront us, the renown reminders of humanity sewn into many songs either from Smith or Tears For Fears in whole. Then the piece reaches out with a warm chorus. A complex sting arrangement reaching back into the oeuvre of TFF as certain touches reminiscent of Lennon and McCartnery chord progressions have settled into the world around us. Reminders of who has come before us as artists and musicians -a reverb from that past that continues to touch lives, ensconced here and other arrangements with respect and dignity of our origins of a collective musical consciousness.

“Love for everyone” becomes a lyrical theme that repeats not with romantic limitations but the wish for a world where the love from homes in harmony will also bring a world closer to harmony. A psychological motif clearly familiar from the earliest messages within the legacy of Tears For Fears brought forward in this piece by Smith.

The really unique thing about this piece for me is the way the electronics and signal processing tilt and sway with contrasting textures to the acoustical elements of the cello, piano and orchestral parts. The modern, the now is still given thought and attention for those of us listening for “pet sounds”. The piece is beautifully arranged and a sense of time of this creation is somehow not lost in the track time itself. Clearly, the thoughtful moments over the span that this creation came to life arrive with a sense of attention to detail with the larger, longer questions of how to give a piece such as this a full, rich, yet buoyant and poignant emotional package are met.

I as a listener feel only a sense of chagrin that this single is not the seemingly the preview of a larger body of work treated in this same manner of artfulness. May an album be forthcoming. In a review on 2009-11-21 entitled A Re-worked Version Of Poker Face:, chucksenescall wrote, “It’s a bit disappointing to see a recording artist do this kind of thing — Bad Romance is obviously a re-worked version of Poker Face — I really would have liked to hear something truly new. Both songs (Poker Face & Bad Romance) clock-in at 119 beats per minute, both are in the key of Am, both have the same producer, the “m-m-m-ma” of Poker Face is plainly re-worded into new (but similar) jabberwocky and placed next to the chorus as if a Poker Face cookie-cutter was all one needed to ship platinum anymore….

It’s clear that Gaga is a fan of movie director Alfred Hitchcock: she sings, “I want your PSYCHO, your VERTIGO schtik, want you in my REAR WINDOW…” I don’t know if this was intentional or not — the naming of films here by the same director seems a bit too cute to be accidental. I half expected to see THE BIRDS swoop in from NORTH BY NORTHWEST in the video, with a TORN CURTAIN thrown in for good measure.

The production here is first-rate, and is a fine lead-off single for this 8-song unit between albums — and I have little doubt the song will strike platinum — I can think of at least a half-dozen solid ways to re-mix this; a ballad version could even be built in A minor from what I’ve heard here and sell strongly — but Gaga, if you’re reading this, let me tell you something: if you intend to have a career, you better drop the idea of selling the same record over and over and over. The public will only buy that for so long.

In a review on 2010-01-19 entitled Original and Great Lyrics, “Borrowed” Music, nagaxen wrote, “While I have been a fan of both Jay-Z and Alicia Keys since their respective initial albums and I honestly loved this song the first time I heard it, I was somewhat annoyed by the fact that the overall theme of the song (message, rhythm, harmony, and to some extent even the melody) seems to have been borrowed from another song that came out nearly 2 years before this did:

Malbec - The Visit

If you listen to Malbec’s song and then listen to Jay-Z’s song, you can notice a few similarities:

* The initial beat is the exact same.

* The repetitions of “New York” in both choruses have the same rhythm (Jay-Z’s is slowed down by about half iirc but the ratio is nearly 100% identical) and the actual melody is astonishingly similar.

* Both are shout outs to New York.

Both songs have a great amount of musical energy and the harmonies/melodies leave one with a sense of inspiration but because Jay-Z’s came out 2 years later, it feels as though his and Alicia Keys’ song is nothing more than a simple hip-hop version with some musical rearrangement and new lyrics of an already good song.

If I had never known about the Malbec song, I would have given this 5 stars without a doubt… However, sadly, I’m a little disappointed in two of my favorite artists (especially Alicia Keys) for all of these similarities without even a tip of the hat to Malbec.

I know it’s difficult to come up with any music that’s actually “original” these days but it doesn’t even seem like they were trying this time and these songs are far too similar for this to be a coincidence.
