Although the horror of this day seems so unbearable and our hearts break at the thought of these heinous actions, we ask each resident to stand with the Mayor and Council to lock arms and unite as one community, to render support to the community of Newtown where we can and offer our prayers often. We give great thanks to those who ushered the children to safety and believe that their heroic actions prevented further loss. It is to these American ideals of strength and courage we give accolades and will assist us in rising from this unfathomable incident, but never allowing us to forget the terrible loss of America’ children we had to ensure this day.

The Town of Bladensburg, along with State and County officials, have been tracking the progress of the impending storm scheduled to have an impact on our region as early as late afternoon Sunday. Current weather advisory’s as of this time are for high gusts of winds and rain between four and eight inches of rain in mid-Atlantic states. The Town and other officials have prepared their workforces, vehicles, and necessary for the storm. Additionally, PEPCO has already staffed up repair crews in the event of the storm will have significant impact upon the system.

Nonetheless, community members are advised to prepare in case of power outages due to severe and unpredictable conditions to do the following:

Have batteries and flash light on hand.

Have three (3) days’ worth of water (recommended one gall per person per day) and canned or non-perishable food (w/ a can opener) stocked and stored.

Locate and/ or have on hand a first aid kit.

Ensure that if on medication, you have enough to last for three days.

Charge cell phones and locate your car cell phone adaptor

Gas up your car.

While it is always better to shelter in place, do the following in preparation that you or your family may have to temporarily vacate your home due to unforeseen weather related circumstances:

Ensure everyone in your family knows what your emergency evacuation plan is.

Prepare a small bag w/ a change of clothes and personal essential in case you must vacate

Place a copy of your insurance agent and/ or policy information in this bag.

Make a list of emergency phone numbers and contact information. Put paper lists in a plastic bag.

Have a small amount of cash on hand (as ATM’s may not work in large widespread power outages.)

Please Remember:

In cases of downed wires…DO NOT TOUCH THEM. Please notify the Police Department at 301-864-8040 (Non-emergency) or emergency 301-864-0400 or 9-1-1.

IF YOU LOOSE POWER, it is IMPORTANT to advise Pepco: Visit www.pepco.com or call 1-877-PEPCO-62 (1-877-737-2662). YOUR call actually does assist advising PEPCO both the magnitude of the outage as well where it is.

What to do during the storm

Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed to preserve food.

Turn off or unplug propane tanks, electronic equipment and appliances.

Stay indoors. Drive only if necessary.

During power outages, don’t use candles — they can be a fire hazard.

Don’t use gas cooking ranges for heating your home because of carbon monoxide hazards.

If you go outside during the storm, stay away from loose or dangling power lines. Avoid flooded roads and washed-out bridges.

Wear protective clothing and closed-toed shoes.

Use your cellphone for emergency calls only, to conserve battery life.

Don’t bring generators indoors.

This is list is NOT meant to be all inclusive list but to serve as a guide in assisting you through a potential storm. The Mayor and Council of Bladensburg urge that you do follow these guidelines and ensure that will continue to be vigilant and support community safety and to work diligently with others to ensure a quick as possible return to normalcy once the storm subsides.

Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown today joined Congresswoman Donna Edwards, state and local officials and representatives from law enforcement and domestic violence victims’ advocacy groups to announce that all 30 local law enforcement agencies in Prince George’s County (to include the Town of Bladensburg) will adopt use of the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence’s nationally recognized Lethality Assessment Program (LAP) in an effort to protect and assist victims of domestic violence. The program will be implemented in coordination with the Family Crisis Center Inc. of Prince George’s county, the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention (GOCCP) and the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence (MNADV).

“By bringing together all 30 County, Sheriff, and Municipal police departments to implement the Lethality Assessment Program, we’re making Prince George’s County, and our state, a safer place to live,” said Lt. Governor Brown. “Since 2006 we’ve driven down violent crime in Maryland by 25%. And today, our police officers, counselors, health care workers, victim’s advocates, and state agencies stand united as we work toward a violence-free Maryland.”

The Lethality Assessment Program—Maryland Model (LAP) integrates an evidence–based screening instrument with an accompanying protocol to identify those victims of intimate partner domestic violence that are at the greatest risk of being killed, at the scene of a call for service, and to connect them immediately to the local domestic violence program. Research shows that putting victims in touch with services as soon as possible can reduce domestic violence related homicides, serious assaults and repeat victimization. The goal of the LAP is to prevent domestic violence homicides, serious injury, and re-assault by encouraging more victims to utilize the support and shelter services of domestic violence programs. For more please see: http://www.governor.maryland.gov/ltgovernor/pressreleases/121023.asp
