This blog hasn't been updated in a long time, the main reason being that its "blogmaster" (blog version of the webmaster?) has been off World Of WarCrack for a few years already.

Although this blog has the name of what used to be an awesome guild called The Trail Of Dead (nothing to do with the band, to us, a trail of dead was what we left behind after we were done with an area, R.I.P. TTOD), the main focus of this blog has always been more of a macros how-to and a few other resources for people playing World Of Warcraft like the list of instances/dungeons by level.

With the release of WOTLK (Wrath of the Lich King) and even before that, many things have changed in the way macros work in WoW so it would probably necessitate many changes to be made for the macros to work, although, some may still work unmodified. There is no plan of ever upgrading this site so what you see here is what you get.

Absolute Beginner's Guide To WoW Macros

Why would you even want to use macros? What are they? Is it cheating?

A macro is one (or many) command(s) issued when you press an icon. It can be as simple as

/say w00t!

or

/lol

or it can be more complex. Macros can be used for every slash command (/) in the game, like /p /s /y /w /g /dance /smile /cheer etc.

Creating a macro is simple. , just follow these 4 easy steps:

1) From inside the game world, press esc and then select Macros from the Options menu.

2) Here you have 2 choices; either you create/modify a macro in the General Macros tab for everyone of your characters to use, or in the tab specific to your current character only.

Personally, I put macros in the General tab for things like emotes, gestures or funny chat comments.

3) I've selected here the character-specific tab. I pressed New and selected an icon (quite a few are available to you, I tend to take something that represents the type of action the macro does or I use the "?" icon displaying the same icon as the original attack.

After pressing ok, you come back to this window:

It is now either time to write your commands or paste them (from this website for example) in the box. You can always change your icon later if it is not fitting.

Wait. What? You don't want to have to write the long complicated name of a weapon or armor you want equipped?

You don't have to! Just make sure your macro box is opened, then either open your bag containing the item or your character equipment sheet if it's equipped and then shift-click on the item: voilà! The name magically pops up in your macro box (now you can cut/copy/paste it all you want).

4) I find when using default attacks, I often encounter a situation where I want my character to attack a target but it actually stops attacking (toggles attack off). So I decided to add a /attack command to my main attack button so it always attacks. I can easily turn it off by left-clicking on the background. I find this little command so useful I add it to pretty much all my weapon attacks, on all my characters.

For the purpose of this how-to, let's make a little modification to the rend attack so that if you use it, it will continue attacking once the rend has been executed (technically both commands happen at the same time).

As you see, each line contains a command. A line can sometimes be longer than the window so it wraps around. This usually doesn't cause problems, but may if it reaches a certain length.

Here I've issued 3 commands:

#show rend will display the icon of the attack or item you write. For it to work, you will need to choose the "?" icon.

/rend is the special attack

/attack is the little tidbit that makes most of my attacks more efficient.

Macros are very flexible, useful in all kinds of situations. You'll find some WoW macros for general use, for any class as well as ones specific to the rogue class, warrior class, hunter class and mage class. Please note that some of the macros for warriors also apply to shield bearing pallies and shammies.

More macros will be added over time. Have fun and remember to experiment!

About The Trail Of Dead

The Trail Of Dead is a World of Warcraft Guild on the Quel'dorei server. Our goal is to have fun while questing, doing instances and battlegrounds as well as some random pvp raids. This website was made to help the guild, but also as a reference for the wow community.

We have a cool tabard and multiple banks.

Guild ranks are as follow:

Matriarch/Patriarch - Guild Master, founding member
Genesis Council - Officer, founding member
Bastard Child - Officer, often a bank of some sort
Straight Arrow - Currently the highest rank a non-officer can hope to get in the guild. Has shown to be a helpful member, is generally friendly toward other members and involves himself by providing crafted items/enchants to other members for free or at a reasonable price.
Adept - Has been with the guild for some time now, is helpful and friendly towards the guild.
Rising Star - A member of the guild in good standing. Is often online, helps other guild members and keeps him or herself involved in the guild through guildchat and guild events (questing, doing instances, raids, special events, etc.)
Tender Foot - A recent member of the guild that has shown he can be trusted to invite new guild members. Logs on quite often and involves himself with other guildies.
Recruit - A recent member of the guild. Will have to show he is worthy in order to gain higher ranks. Recruits can not invite new members into the guild.
Dead Wood - A player that has not been connected for 30 days or more, might possibly get kicked out (Note: all newly recruited members are this rank until an officer promotes them to Recruit)

General Guidelines:

Everyone ranked Rising Star or higher is free to invite new members and help the guild grow (although it is suggested to have played with recruits before inviting them into the guild, to know if they are worthy and fun to play with). Most important guideline : have fun, it's only a game =D

FYI: The Trail Of Dead (TTOD) is in no way affiliated with the band called "...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead", in fact, the name was chosen without knowing such a band existed. To us, The Trail Of Dead is what we leave behind...

Sticky Attack Icon
This is a good replacement for the melee attack icon. This macro will prevent you fron disabling melee attack when you hit it again by accident during a fight. Use the ? icon and it will show your main weapon as an icon.

1-Click Self-Bandage
With this macro, no need to target yourself first before casting. Just click and heal away... It will try using the first kind of bandage, and if none are available, will try the next one. Replace Wool and Silk with the type of bandages you have, you may remove one of the lines or add some to you heart's desire.

New Improved 1-Click Self-Bandage
Clicking the icon will use a bandage on yourself. Right-clicking will heal your current target.

Random Pet (vanity pets)
This simple macro will cast a random pet from one of several pets. Replace Piglet's Collar or Cat Carrier (Bombay) with the name of your favorite pets. You can add new ones by adding a coma (,) before each one.

Weapon Swap
These macros will make you switch from a 1h weapon + shield to a 2h weapon configuration. If you are incombat when you switch your weapons, it will start attacking. Replace Decapitating Sword of the Bear with the one-handed weapon of your choice, and Outrunner's Shield of Stamina with the name of your shield, and replace Taskmaster Axe with your two-handed weapon.

Clicking this version of the macro will take you into 1h wep/shield config, right clicking will equip your 2h wep. Note: currently trying to get a working mashable/toggle version

This macro will equip your favorite fishing pole on first click, cast on the second (and third, and...). Right click the icon to re-equip your fighting gear. Replace Big Iron Fishing Pole with the name of your fishing pole, Coldrage Dagger by the name of your main hand weapon, and Sword of Omen with your off-hand weapon (or shield).

Mount/Dismount +trinket and boots switch
This macro will summon the mount of your choice (will not work for pallys and locks as they are spells) and put un the Carrot on a Stick trinket as well as put on your riding boots (with spurs). When you dismount, it will put your favorite trinket in place of the COAS. Replace Red Hawkstrider with the name of your mount and Nifty Stopwatch with the name of your favorite for-use-when-on-foot trinket. Replace Defiler's Leather Boots with your fighting boots, and Mounting Boots with the name of your boots with spurs.

(Rogue) Stealth/Vanish/Dismount
This macro will unmount you if you are mounted, use stealth if you are not mounted and not in combat, use vanish if you are unmounted and in combat. Very useful! Replace Red Hawkstrider with the name of your mount. Note: I noticed this macro actually takes you straight to stealth after the dismount, no need to hit the icon more than once (unless you're in combat).

(Rogue) Pickpocket(auto-loot) and attack
This macro will pickpocket your target, and then attack it with a Cheap Shot attack (giving you 2 combo points and stunning the target in place). This is great when grinding mobs for cash and loot. You can replace Cheap Shot with the attack of your choice, Ambush and Backstab being two good ones. You need to turn on "Auto Loot Corpse" (in Interface Options) for this macro to work most efficiently. Also, if you use the ? icon it will show the Pick Pocket icon.

(Mage) Ultimate Arcane Explosion
This one is very useful for pvp as it will cast Arcane Explosion (Rank 1) when not in combat and the highest rank when in combat, saving you mana when you're only looking for hidden rogues/druids/Night Elves.

(Mage) One-Button Conjure Water/Food
I love keeping my action bar clean. This one will save you 1 icon space. Normal left click conjures water, right click conjures food.

You know you can eat and drink at the same time... right? Keeping in line with a clean action bar this icon will make you drink water and eat food, all in one simple click (make sure you have some in your inventory first). Replace Conjured Purified Water and Conjured Rye with the drink and food of your choice.

(Mage) Buff-up Sequence
This macro has multiple uses. Pressing it once will put on your shield, a second time will activate Arcane Intellect so you can store the most mana possible and a third time will activate Frost Armor. After 6 seconds this macro will default to Mana Shield so you can protect yourself if needed. Want to buff someone with Arcana Intellect? Simple: just select them and right-click the icon. Use the ? icon and will show the Mana Shield

WARRIOR-SPECIFIC MACROS

(Warrior) Stance-aware Spell Interrupt
Depending on your stance, this macro will choose the right spell interrupt for you. If you are in defensive stance (stance:2), it will use shield bash (hopefully you're holding a shield...), and if you are in berserker stance (stance:3), it will use pummel. If you are in combat stance which has no spell interrupt, it will simply start attacking.

(Warrior) 1-Button Weapon and Stance Switch
(left)clicking this button will put on your shield and 1h weapon and switch you into defensive stance. Right clicking will equip your 2h weapon and you can then select the stance of your choice (usually battle or berserker stance). Replace Grom'tor's Charge with your 1h weapon, Bloodforged Guard with your shield and Lunar Crescent with your 2h weapon. /startattack was added because switching weapons in the middle of a combat usually makes your character stop attacking. This will keep you hitting (or start attacking) your target. For a mashable version, see the two following macros.

There will be quick runs of Wailing Caverns and Deadmines this weekend (1-2-3 sept.) to help Kameleon get twinked. Anyone who would like to participate is of course more than welcome.

By the way, if there is a dungeon you would like to do, or a quest your would like help with, be sure to let the guild know. A day can be scheduled for that event. Take a look at the List of Dungeons by Level to get a good idea of what dungeon would be suitable for you.
