Batanes Batanes!!!

Below is a detailed account of our adventures in Batanes. My viewpoints are being shared for everyone interested to come and see the islands.

I got my zest to blog again as soon as I set foot on Batanes' capital, Basco. I knew I had to share this experience the moment our plane landed in the airport and upon seeing the majestic dormant volcano, Mt. Iraya, at the end of the runway. Visiting this place this year wasn't really planned, though it's in my list of places that I'd want to see in the future.

Marcial and I were at the Travel Expo with friends last February 2013 just to look around. At that time, we really had no plans of booking any travel any time soon since we were scheduled to go to Singapore at the end of that month. However, because of Sky Jet's discounted fare of P13.5K (1 pax) for Manila-Basco-Manila, we found ourselves booking for a flight for May 24-27. My last recollection of a round trip ticket for Manila-Basco-Manila through Seair was more or less P20k. So, booking a flight for Sky Jet was an easy decision to make. Recently, Air Philippines opened regular flights to Basco at an even lower fare amounts (please check their website).

I normally create my own trip itinerary when exploring new territories. But for Batanes, we left it to our selected travel agency, Batanes Travel and Tours, for the tour and accommodation. BTT was on top of the list of agencies offering packaged tours for Batanes when I searched through Google. My contact person from the agency was Dominic Castillejos, I think he owns the agency. He was prompt in answering my numerous queries and was very accommodating throughout the pre-booking stage of the ordeal. Because of this, and the positive reviews that I've read about BTT, we closed the deal with them. As part of the normal booking procedures, you'll be asked to deposit 50% of the entire amount through their BDO account. The remaining 50% will have to be settled 2 weeks before your arrival. Check out BTT's website (http://www.batanestravelandtours.com/) for a more comprehensive information about their offerings, as well as the booking procedures. By the way, we chose Batanes Seaside Logding and Restaurant (BSLR) for the hotel, and we availed the 4D/3N tour. The package fee of P11.9K included accommodation, tours and all meals. By the way, it was in the same hotel where Iza Calzado and Ken Chu (F4) stayed when they filmed the movie "Batanes".

THE EXPERIENCE

If I am to summarize the trip, Batanes is all about the following:

The Greenest Hills
Water (water current is very strong even on a summer day)
Lighthouses
Churches and Chapels

If you're into any or all of these, you'll enjoy the place. I love nature, especially the water, so I had a good time. But if I am to rate the experience, it's 8/10 overall. I was really looking forward for a swim, but at the time of our visit, the tides were either too low on day time or the current was very strong. We had to settle to the public beach at the back of the hotel - the sand was dark but the water was clear.

I bet most agencies follow the same itinerary for a 4D/3N visit. Our tour guide, Wilbert, was assigned by BTT. He fetched us at the airport on day 1. He and our driver, Cleto, accompanied us throughout the trips; there were just the 4 of us in the van.

MY NOTES

* Air travel from Manila to Basco is an hour and 10 minutes. Batanes is closer to the southern tip of Taiwan than in Manila.

* Batanes has 10 islands but only 3 are inhabited - Batan (where Basco is located), Sabtang and Itbayat. The first 2 are more commonly traversed by tourists. If you have the luxury to stay there for a few more days, you can go to Itbayat which is a good 3 to 4 hours sea travel from Batan. Itbayat houses caves and springs and you need to spend the night there before heading back to Basco.

* Batanes' landscapes closely resemble those of New Zealand and Scotland.

* The Ivatans (it's what the locals are called) are the kindest people I have ever met. The people, young and old, greet you with a smile day in and day out.

* For seasoned travelers, you may create your own Batanes itinerary. For the others, I suggest you arrange one with a travel agency especially if you want to have a comprehensive tour of the islands.

First, there seem to be very few vehicle operators that you can contact for your trips (destinations are quite far from one another) and these operators seem to be already tied up with big travel agencies in the island.

Second, for those planning to visit the nearby island Sabtang, trip schedules from Batan are fixed; at the time of our visit, there were only 2 boats transporting people between the islands. You might not be able to get a trip during peak season as boat operators will most likely prioritize transport of goods and locals between the islands.

* If you opt to create your own itinerary, make sure to schedule your trip to Sabtang not on the day prior to your travel back to Manila. Boat travel between Batan and Sabtang is highly dependent on the sea's current. Boat trips may be cancelled if the waters get unruly and you will have to spend the night in Sabtang. You'd most likely miss your flight back home as flights to Manila are normally scheduled early morning. There are homestays in Sabtang island, though - average cost is about P200.00 per night, excluding the meals.

* Generally, there's really not much to see in the islands, except for hills, waters, lighthouses and churches/ chapels. You go there just to relax and commune with nature. If you're expecting for adventure like those in Davao/ Cagayan De Oro or a nightlife like in Boracay, Batanes is not for you.

* There are places included in the itinerary which are not really interesting at all.

For example, one would not bother seeing the oldest Spanish bridge or the oldest house in the island, especially if they're not really well-maintained.

I did not enjoy the cold spring (called Fountain of Youth, Day 3 PM tour), because it was crowded by locals at that time. It's some sort of a cemented mini-pool that's around 10-15 feet in diameter with water coming from the mountain. It requires a short hike downhill; vehicles can't get near the pool area.

There are plenty of churches and chapels in the islands too. But there is nothing extraordinary about them; there's plenty of them here in Manila.

* On the other hand, the top 3 places that caught my interest are the following.

1. Fundacion Pacita (Northern Batan Island). I liked this place the most in Batanes. Visiting the place is a standard in the itineraries offered by travel agencies. The main receiving area of the hotel is atop a hill; hotel rooms are scattered around this area. We were told that, unless you go and buy coffee in the restaurant, you are only allowed to stay in the gardens in front the main area. Well, since Marcial and I both love coffee, we went inside and marvel at the place. Coffee costs P80.00 per person. The hotel is owned by the Abads and showcases works of the artist Pacita (you'll love this place if you love the arts). At the far end, are coffee tables where you get one of the best views in the island.

2. Chavayan Community Vernacular Houses (Sabtang Island). Reading about the famous stonehouses in History classes is totally different from actually seeing them. You need to board the Faluwa (the local boat) to get to Sabtang Island to see the Chavayan Community where rows of stonehouses are built. These houses, the authentic ones, are made of stones and lime paste; roofs are made of cogon which make the interior cold even during summer. Sadly, only a few remain to this day.

3. Racuh a Payaman - Marlboro Country (Southern Batan Island). The place is a sea of green which gives you the best view of Mt. Iraya and the Pacific Ocean/ South China Sea. It's an elevated piece of land which allows you to breathe the freshest air coming the bodies of water surrounding the island. The place will remind you of a scene from the movie Sound of Music where Julie Andrews sang the movie's theme. When you're there, all you'd want to do is take pictures and lay down all day.

* Hopping between islands can be quite challenging. There's a part between Batan and Sabtang Islands where the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea meet; hence, the strong current even on a summer day. For those who easily get seasick, remember to take your medicines before the travel. Also, the boats that carry passengers (called Faluwas) have a capacity of 30 pax (the small one). I was told by Wilbert that the Coast Guard checks the boat's capacity before it sails to ensure safety during the trip. By the way, the Faluwas have no "katig" or balance beams as they get easily damaged by strong current. So, it's important that the weight of the content of the boat is properly distributed.

* Of all the dishes that were served during the trip, it's the Ivatans' version of the Adobo that I love the most. Beef, which is common among local delicacies and cheaper than pork in the island, is very tender. All the rest are passable to the palate, just ordinary, not really tasty. One thing I like the most about BTT is that it arranged dinners such that tourists have them in different restaurants each night.

Night 1: Bunker. This is located in Naidi Hills fronting the lighthouse. It used to be a cafe but, due to lack of patrons, was turned into a restaurant that opens only at night.

Night 3: Dive Batanes Hotel. This is my favorite among the 3. Food tasted better than the first 2 restaurants.

* It's summer from March to June in Batanes, there were only a couple of short rain showers during our stay.

* Travel must-haves.

Camera. You won't go to this place as often as in other places in the country. Make sure you capture as much perfect moments as you can while you're there. Did I mention that Batanes is a photographer's paradise?

Insect Repellant. Mosquitoes are plenty at night.

Sunblock. Apply a generous amount during the trips. The temperature is significantly lower than that in Manila but you'd still want to get protected from UV rays. We really didn't go swimming while we were there but I still got a good tan from the day trips.

Cash. We were told that there is only 1 ATM (Landbank) in Basco, make sure you have enough cash on hand. I doubt if there are establishments that accept credit cards, so no need to bring them there.

Water. Remember to get hydrated all the time.

* Communication. There is no Globe mobile network/ internet in Batanes. We just settled with BSLR's wifi connection offered free of charge to its guests; connection is generally slow, though. Smart Telecom has better connectivity throughout the islands.

* There are very few souvenir shops in the island. Prices of shirts range from P160.00 to P240.00 in Basco; it's more expensive if you buy them in Sabtang. Sweets (like bukayo and camote chips) may be bought from P15.00 to P75.00.

* For those who are massage addicts, there's a spa in Basco, just a short distance from BSLR going to the town proper. Based on the signage, traditional hilot massage is at P350.00 per hour. The spa is open from 10.30AM to 11.00PM daily.

* On the day of traveling back to Manila, make sure to check-in early as queues can get too long since there are no scanners in the airport. Everything is done manually.

* Total cost of damage is P27,000.00 per head.

P11,900.00 - accommodation, tour and all meals (includes breakfast on the first and last days)

P1,400.00 - pasalubong

P500.00 - generally, for food items that were consumed outside the package's meal inclusions

Water Rafting (Davao River) - Day 4 of Davao Adventure 2011

DAVAO WILD WATER RAFTING

I was feverish the night before the rafting day. So I took huge doses of vitamin C and biogesic every 4 hours – thank God I felt better in the morning.

I got the contact information of the rafting agency through their website. Arthur, was very accommodating as he answered my queries about rafting. Basically, they’ll require you to send in your head-count through email. Then they’ll require you to make a downpayment of P 500.00 per head through any of their bank accounts. You need to send the deposit slip to them through fax or email. Then they will confirm your reservation on your specified rafting day. Cost of rafting is P2,000.00 per head. This is inclusive of 2 water bottles, packed lunch, a t-shirt, a DVD compilation of pictures and videos of the rafting activity, and free passes to the Butterfly Garden, Kamindanawan Cultural Show and Zip City. They have rafting schedules everyday. It’s my second time to do rafting. My first rafting experience was in Cagayan De Oro with Myla.

Their website offers comprehensive information on anything and everything you need to know about rafting. I think they’re the only rafting agency in Davao. Unlike in CDO, the rafting experience is the same for beginners, advanced and intermediate rafters (an agency in CDO offers 3 rafting levels – levels are determined based on the height of the rapids).

Meet-up point in Davao is at their main office inside the Crocodile Park. Call time is 8:00 AM but the group actually leaves the site at 9:30 in the morning. When you arrive at the office, you’ll have to fill-up and sign a waiver – it’s important to read this document. It basically tells you that the agency has nothing to do with you in case something bad happens during the rafting activity. Then you’ll need to fit a vest and a helmet. After which, you’ll be given your paddle. There’s a brief orientation at the office before you leave for the put-in area. You’ll be told of your groupings and assigned to your raft guide during the orientation. Minimum number of members per raft is 5 persons. Groups below this number will be joined with other groups. Here is where Marcial and I met our groupmates: Leo, Dorm, Den and Kim. Leo and Dorm are good friends from Davao. Den and Kim are lovers from Manila, also vacationing in Davao at that time. All these guys were fun to be with.

The groups are taken to the put-in area through a jeep - a 45-minute ride from Crocodile Park. The put-in area is the starting point of the rafting activity. Upon arrival, there’s another briefing which will teach rafters on proper wearing of vests and helmets, as well as proper use of the paddle. After the briefing, you’ll then board the rafts. Initially, your raft guide will teach you the different paddle strokes and proper procedure for rescuing your groupmates - in case they get thrown off the raft by major rapids. Once this is done, you’ll start trailing the river.

The water was actually low at that time. According to the taxi driver that I spoke with, it hasn’t been raining in Davao for a week before our arrival. Davao River normally has 23 rapids, 5 of which are major – rafts normally turnover on a major rapid. We started the trail at around 10:45 AM. Halfway through, we had our lunch by the riverside. The meals were packed on containers. We continued the trail after lunch. It rained briefly at around 1PM but it did nothing to increase the water level. We reached the end of the trail at around past 3PM. There are shower stalls at the end of the trail. The end of the trail is different from where we started. But the travel time back to Crocodile Park is still 45 minutes.

We reached Crocodile Park at 4:30 PM but got to actually leave the area back to the hotel before 6PM – we still waited for copies of our pictures and videos. It was the last time that we saw Dorm and Leo. We bumped into Kim and Den in Zip City the following day. The rafting activity basically takes your entire day. I suggest that you go to a spa after to relax your muscles for the following day. We were supposed to visit Philosophy Spa in Davao City (I researched on this from the net). But we were too tired and sleepy already after the dinner in SM City.

In the end, I think there were at least 2 people who got thrown off every raft at some point during the trail. No raft was turned-over, though. The major rapids in Davao were nothing compared to those in CDO, but they still offer a one of a kind rafting experience for first-time rafters. Marcial had a blast that he kept on babbling the experience even now that we’re in Manila. (I’ll push him into trying the rapids of CDO one day. I’ve researched that there’s rafting in Kalinga also, we’ll do that as well).

SM CITY

Nothing spectacular. The place is similar to typical SM Malls we have in Manila; though there are a few local establishments there. We had dinner at Roadhouse Steak Restaurant. We ordered rib-eye steak, shanghai fried rice and sinigang na baboy. They offer bottomless drinks. The steak and the rice were fine. The sinigang was different – it has ginger, dahon ng sili and milk (?!?!), it didn’t taste good. I won’t recommend it. I had LBM later that night which continued until the afternoon of the following day. It was a good thing that I brought diatabs with me, while Marcial had Immodium.

TAGPOPONGAN BEACH RESORT

We went to Tagpopongan Beach Resort in the morning of our third day in Samal Island – this is after we checked-out of Precious Garden at 7:30AM. We stayed at the private rest house of the owner of Precious Garden. Upon our arrival, the caretakers of the resort greeted and served us fresh buko juice. The resthouse has a bedroom, a dining area and a veranda fronting the beach. Use of snorkelling gears and vest was free of charge.

The resort is located in Barangay Tagpopongan, Samal, and is a 45-minute, mostly rough road-drive, from Precious Garden. The shoreline is basically within the same stretch of waters of Pearl Farm; hence, it’s not surprising that the water is pristine and crystal clear. Again, the resort is a haven of peace and quiet. There was only Marcial and me at the resort during our visit. For somebody who loves beaches, there is nothing more that I can say to adore the waters of Tagpopongan. I guess it’s the combination of the water and the place being so private that made me love the place so much. I can just lie down on the shore and sleep all day. That’s why among all the beaches that I’ve been to, the shore of Samal (Pearl Farm and Tangpopongan) is my second favourite in the Philippines. Coron, particularly Malcapuya and Banana Islands is still on top of my list (I’ll post a separate blog on this).

After having our early lunch, we left Tagpopongan at around 10:30 AM and headed straight to the bus terminal to transfer to Davao City. We’ll definitely be back to Samal in the future.

PINNACLE HOTEL AND SUITES

We stayed at Pinnacle Hotel and Suites at Sta. Anna Avenue on our last 2 nights in Davao. I came to know about the hotel through the internet. Our room cost P 2,500.00 per night. The hotel is also relatively new – it was constructed about 2 years ago. The rooms are fully furnished. Apart from a bed, each room has a flat screen tv, bed-side table, a dresser and a cabinet. There is constant supply of hot and cold water in the shower room. The facilities are very clean; the interior’s design is basically minimalist which makes you feel close to home. They’ve begun setting up Christmas decors in the lobby on the second day of our arrival. Wifi is available for free at the lobby; just approach the personnel at the café area for the password.

The hotel offers massage services and has a pool at the 5^th floor which is free for use by hotel occupants. There’s a free buffet breakfast for every checked-in guest. Food is generally fine, not spectacular. Standard check-out time is 12:00 PM; however, I requested for an extension on our last day since our flight to Manila is still at 10PM of October 30 – we were charged with half the room’s daily rate. We also availed their shuttle service to the airport on our return flight to Manila – cost of rental is P 350.00 for the car. Charge for the shuttle service varies per destination. Just approach the reception personnel to inquire and avail one.

ATMs and fastfood chains are very much accessible to the hotel and it’s about a 3-minute walk to Gaisano Mall. I would definitely recommend Pinnacle Hotel to travellers looking for temporary accommodation in Davao. The staffs are very warm and helpful. What’s kind of off is that the front desk staffs are useless when it comes to directions to tourist spots in the City - don’t ask them where Eden or Crocodile parks are, they can’t give you any answer on this. But, don’t worry, there are plenty of taxis in the city. It’s our main mode of transportation during our stay there.

After depositing our baggages in the room at Pinnacle, we headed to the Davao Crocodile Park. It’s a 30-minute drive from Gaisano Mall. You can only reach the park through taxis or private vehicles. On the way to the park, you’ll pass by a zorv ball site. It’s also open to the public for a fee. It’s similar to the zorb ride in Dahilayan Park, Bukidnon, - you are tied at the zorb’s interior wall as the ball rolls downhill, the whole ride is less 30 seconds.

Entrance to Crocodile Park is P 150.00 per person on a weekday and P300.00 per person on weekends. The park is actually a zoo which houses almost all types of animals, but the main attraction is crocodiles. Expect that most visitors are families and schools on educational trips. The park is clean and well-maintained. You can go in and out of the park as long as you have your hand stamped at the entrance gate. Policemen/ security personnel are visible in the area, which, I guess, helps maintain peace and order in the park. I’m not a big fan of zoos, though.

There’s a restaurant within the zoo’s complex (actually, it’s the only restaurant in the complex), it’s called Riverwalk Grill. The grill is located beside a river; hence, the name. It offers exotic dishes where the main ingredient is crocodile. We didn’t order one since we’re allergic to seafoods with shell. The food is not pricey. A sandwich costs P 60.00. Cooked meals are sold at less than P 150.00. Service is slow, though. My hamburger was served after 30 minutes. Food is not delicious at all.

This is a small complex in the heart of Davao City where you can buy pasalubong for people back home. I think owners of establishments are mostly Muslims. Dry goods being sold here include bags, native sandals, key chains, etc. The place is also famous for money changers. You’ll be greeted by a number of our Muslim friends offering money-changing services as you enter the gates of Aldevinco. It was already late when we reached this place. Only a few establishments are open at around 7:30 PM.

We walked from Aldevinco to People’s Park. The Muslim who I talked to was kind enough to give us directions going to this place. There’s nothing extraordinary about the park – it’s just like Luneta. There are fountains, stone carvings, sellers, playground for kids – nothing much to see.

We stayed at Precious Garden Resort on Samal Island. Actually, it was recommended by a business affiliate. I searched for it on the net, I’m lucky they have a website. The owner is German who was very friendly to the guests. Kristeen, the resort staff, was very accommodating and made sure that we enjoyed our stay there. The place is relatively new. If I’m not mistaken, it was constructed about a year ago. Renovations for improvement are still on-going.

There are several ways to get to Samal Island from Davao City. You may take a lantsa - a boat that carries passengers from the City to the Island. Just tell the taxi driver to take you to the lantsa terminal in Davao City, it’s in one of the alleys located within a wet market. Cost of lantsa is P 13.00 per head. From the lantsa port in Samal Island, you then take a tricycle going to the resort. It’s P 7.00 per person per trip. We hired the entire tricycle on a special trip for P 49.00. The resort is a good 10 to 15-minute travel from the terminal. Tell the tricycle driver the name of the resort and they’d know where to take you.

Another option is to take the Island City Express bus that brings passengers from Davao City to Samal Island. The bus takes the barge to get to the island. You only pay for the bus fare. The bus takes care of the barge fee. On Samal Island, you get off on a bus terminal. From there you take a tricycle. If you are on a taxi or have a private vehicle, you may get to the island through the barge. You need to find the barge terminal in the city and pay the corresponding fee. Most resorts normally offer transport services from the airport to the hotel – this is the most convenient option for travelers.

Precious Garden Resort

Precious Garden Resort has 10 rooms; ours cost P 1,800 per night. The bed is matrimonial. The furniture and fixtures are well-appointed. There’s constant supply of water, heater is functional. Each room has a veranda. It’s where Marcial and I have our breakfast each morning. The room is good for 2 persons, but I think it can accommodate up to 10 persons (standard is 4, though). They have air-conditioned and fan rooms. Each checked-in guest is entitled for a breakfast. During our stay, they were offering cornsilog (corned beef, fried rice and egg) and bangsilog (fried milkfish, fried rice and egg). Each meal comes with coffee. The room has no TV, but it was fine because we were out on tour for most part of the day.

The resort is famous for its restaurant. Even Samal locales frequent the place just to dine. They have a wide selection of dishes to choose from. Their specialty is the thin-crust pizza. We’ve tried it on our second night and it was great. Other dishes that Marcial and I tried and recommend include Sisig, Buttered Chicken, Spaghetti, German Sausage, Breaded Pork Chops, and Tuna Sandwich. The price is very reasonable. They prepare the food only when you order them.

The beach is a good 2-minute walk from the hotel. It’s not as spectacular as Boracay. But it’s very private. The water is good but not as great as that of Pearl Farm’s or the other beaches located in Barangay Kaputian of Samal. This was okay with us since, as I’ve said we were on tour during the day. The tour was arranged with the resort. For our second day in Samal, we went to Maxima, Hagimit Falls, Blue Jazz Resort and Montfort Bat Cave. On our last day, we went to Tagpopongan Beach Resort. The 2-day tour cost us a total of P 3,000.00, inclusive of the driver’s fee, vehicle rental and meals for lunch.

MAXIMA

The place is famous for its tarpaulin slide which, I think, is about 20 meters long. Entrance fee is P 200.00 per person which already covers free use of the cottages, the slide and vest. From the entrance, you need to descend around 50 steps to get to the cottages. Aside from the slide, there’s not much that you can do here. There’s also a diving board which is right beside the tip of the tarpaulin slide. A Staff can take your picture as you slide or dive. Each printed picture costs P 60.00. If you don’t take the slide, you need to descend around 30 steps to get to the water. The stairs are very slippery, so be careful! There is no shoreline. The water after the last step is deep already. If you’re not a swimmer, make sure you have your vest with you. There are no restrictions on the swimming attire.

HAGIMIT FALLS

This is very near Maxima, it’s on the opposite side of the road where Maxima is located. There’s an entrance fee of P 40.00 per person. Our driver said that entrance to the falls used to be free. I guess they imposed the fee to form part of the budget to maintain the place. The falls is a good 5-minute walk from the entrance. The steps going to the falls area is not as steep as those of Maxima’s. There are cottages for rent. We didn’t get to the main water falls. There are lots of streams that you can soak yourself into. The streams vary in depth. The water is cold, fresh and generally clean. There are no restrictions on the swimming attire.

BLUE JAZZ RESORT

This is just a detour from the itinerary agreed with Precious Garden. Blue Jazz is one the most famous resorts in Samal Island. There’s an entrance fee of P 90.00 per person. The resort is not spectacular. If you want peace and quiet, this is not the place for you. The resort offers accommodations - just check their website for details. The resort has a beach which is just okay. Quality of water is same as that in Precious Garden as they are basically on the same stretch of shoreline of Samal Island. The resort has a souvenir shop, giant slides and zip line. The zip line is around 50 meters long and worth P 70.00 per person. There are three slides, all of them leading to a 3-feet deep pool. The slides are normally taken with a salbabida. You need to pay P 90.00 per head if you want to take the slide, the fee is good for one hour only. We were told that there’s fire-dancing and clubbing at night but we didn’t get to see this anymore. There are no restrictions on the swimming attire.

MONTFORT BATCAVE

The batcave has been recognized by Guinness for having the largest concentration of fruitbats in the world. The beautiful gay tour guide mentioned that, at the moment, the population of fruitbats has reached closed to 3 million based on approximation made through hi-tech gadgets placed inside the cave - the count was estimated based on bats per square foot. The cave is actually below the ground. The openings on the ground allow guests to peek into the cave to view the bat colony. The bats’ poop is not pleasing, bring your hankies with you. The bats are nocturnal, they leave the cave around 6PM to look for food. The guide said that they reach up to as far as Bukidnon to look for fruits. They return to the caves in the morning. A guest is required to pay P 100.00 per person to get to the cave.

I’ve been wanting to go to Davao ever since 2010 but it was only this October that it finally came true. Marcial and I were supposed to go to Bangkok instead to celebrate our birthdays. However, Marcial requested that we go domestic this time. It was actually a great decision given the typhoon that hit Thailand at that time. There’s so many things to do in Davao. Make sure you don’t leave this part of Mindanao without visiting Samal Island which has one of the most beautiful waters I’ve seen in the Philippines. Coron still tops my list, though.

I love Davaoenos! They’re generally very kind and warm people. They’re native dialect is Bisaya but everyone we’ve met understands Tagalog, so communication shouldn’t be a problem. The City is just like Manila, but cleaner and in better order. There are lots of vehicles, but surprisingly, traffic was smooth.

The Davao trip was full of adventure. We’ll definitely be back in the future.

Davao Pearl Farm (Samal) - Day 1 of Davao Adventure 2011

We went to the Pearl Farm for a day-tour on the first day of our Davao trip. Day tour costs P 1,850 on weekdays and P 2,500 on weekends. Meet-up point for Davao Pearl Farm is at the Marina Wharf. From the airport, we took the taxi going to the Wharf. From the Wharf, you’ll be taken by a ferry to the Pearl Farm. Travel time is approximately 45 minutes. Before leaving the Wharf, you’ll be oriented by the Front Desk Staff for about 10 minutes before you board the ferry. Davao Pearl Farm is on Samal Island.

Upon arrival on Samal Island, you’ll be offered with complimentary drinks, normally pineapple juice. Pearl farm is quite huge - there are mini-shuttles that can bring you from one spot to another. If you’re the adventurous type, you may want to explore the Farm on foot.

There are 2 swimming pools which may be used by the guests: an infinity pool near the dock fronting a restaurant and a more private pool on the opposite end of the island. There are huts which may be used for free. There are showers near the pool areas. Guests may also swim in the beach which has very nice waters. The Farm is not very strict as regards swimming attire. You may swim in shorts and tank tops, but try not to cover yourself too much to get a good tan. Every guest is entitled with 1 free towel.

Pearl Farm also offers water activities (like snorkelling, kayak, etc.) for a fee. You need to approach one of their personnel on the island to reserve.

There’s a more secluded (smaller) island that’s just a minute away from the main island. You need to take a motor boat (free of charge) to visit this part of Peal Farm. We never got to actually set foot on the islet during our stay there, the main island was enough already keep us occupied for the day.

The day-tour package includes buffet lunch which is served at the Maranao Restaurant from 10AM to 3PM. You don’t need to present anything as you approach the restaurant. Just give the staff the name of the person who booked your accommodation and you’re all set. The food is superb! Dishes are Filipino, American and European. There’s a small air-conditioned room which is dedicated only for desserts. Take time trying everything to get your money’s worth.

Overall, every penny paid for is worth the experience. If you love peace and quiet, you’ll love this place. The Farm is a world-class resort which is frequented by locales and foreigners alike. Based on experience, you may even leave your things unattended in the huts without fear of loss or theft (but do this at your own risk). Every Staff is very cordial, courteous and has been trained to offer great customer service.

We booked our tour through phone. I called their reservation office in Manila. The booking officer will get your booking details and, afterwards, will email you a confirmation letter which contains instructions for settling the fees (you’ll be asked to deposit your payment to their bank account). You’ll then have to email them back the deposit slip. Upon receipt, they’ll send you the final confirmation letter which you have to print and present at the Reception Office at the Wharf.

The ferry to and from Pearl Farm strictly follows the trip schedule. Be at the boarding area on time. If you’re leaving Pearl Farm (going back to the Marina Wharf), make sure you secure your boat pass from the Front Office an hour before departure for a guaranteed seat at the ferry. You may avail of the ferry outside the trip schedules, but this will cost you around P 7,000. As per their Front Desk Officer at the Wharf, a ferry can accommodate as many as 60 persons per trip (only?).

I love color and I embrace life.

Travelling has become my passion. But I’m also into music, fashion and shopping.

It was Marcial, my better half, who introduced me to travelling. We met in 2008 – and from then on, my journeys have never been so sweet and meaningful. Luckily, people in the office where I'm working also have a fondness for touring. Thanks, Debbie, Myla, Rashy, Ofie, Nympha and Misty for the unforgettable moments with you! Marcial pushed me into blogging about my travel experiences to document the beautiful places I’ve been to. But, this blog is also intended for fellow travelers - to offer them ideas on where to go to, eat, sleep and have fun. Ending the journey is just as exciting as planning it – because it means that you get to move on to planning and conquering the next destination in your life’s itinerary.

I always believe that it’s not the destination that makes travelling unforgettable. It’s the journey - the process of actually getting there (despite unforeseen, unexpected and uncontrollable circumstances) - that gives me fulfillment.

The world is so huge to be conquered in a lifetime. Create your lifetime itinerary (I’ve done mine). Stick to it. Plan. And if you fail to complete your planned destinations by the time your life on earth is about to be over, don’t fret. We have the next lifetime to continue the journey.
