Canada’s Yukon is one the world’s last great wildernesses, where bears, moose and caribou roam. It’s a place where hikers, paddlers, skiers and mushers can travel for days without seeing another human soul, where the northern lights dance green and red across starry skies, where glaciers tumble, mountain peaks soar, and tundra shrubs scream scarlet as summer turns to fall. It’s a land of heart-rending human stories, too, for the Yukon is home to the Klondike, to which an estimated hundred thousand dreamers and desperadoes – including a young Jack London – once swarmed in search of gold. Bradt’s Yukon is the only guidebook dedicated to this natural and historical wonderland. Offering practical advice on everything from where to pan for gold to how to avoid being eaten by a bear, alongside quirky anecdotes (such as the story behind the ‘sourtoe cocktail’ – a shot of whisky garnished with a severed human toe), it’s the perfect companion for highway drivers, cruise-ship passengers, and outdoors enthusiasts alike.

I hope this guide is interesting to you

Chicago 2010

Not for Tourists Guide to Chicago 2010, half anti-guidebook, half urban manual, is the ultimate little black book. Packing it all in and revealing where to get the best pizza, find charming architecture, catch a movie, find the best nightlife, or simply where to head for the best view of the Chicago city skyline. Whether you've called Chicago your home for decades or just arrived last night, you ignore at your peril this new 2010 edition with its caustic neighbourhood summaries and refreshing, politically incorrect descriptions. Meticulously researched and written by folks who actually live here, NFT presents the city along with its good, its bad and its downright hideous. In over 400 pages of glorious content, the pocket-sized survival handbook features simply everywhere, from The Loop and Prairie Shores to Logan Square and East Lakeview, as well as covering Parks, Colleges & Universities, Sports, Transit, and Arts & Entertainment. Designed for street-savvy locals, commuters, business travellers, and yes, tourists, NFT Chicago includes a highly graphical map for every neighbourhood featured. User-friendly map icons highlight everything from coffee shops, supermarkets, liquor stores and libraries, to hardware stores, gas stations, gyms and pharmacies. So if you're meeting friends in an unfamiliar part of the city or find yourself off the beaten track, NFT is a must-have resource. But NFT doesn't waste your time by serving up five zillion options just because they're in a database: contributors have gone back to eat, drink, dance and shop their way through last year's listings to check that they're still worth knowing.

I hope this guide is interesting to you

Tour of the Jungfrau Region

Making a horsehoe loop among some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in all the Swiss Alps, the brand new Tour of the Jungfrau Region is destined to become one of the classic walks of Europe. In a journey of 9-10 days the walker visits pastures, ridges, summits and passes, skirts exquisite mountain lakes, and gazes on waterfalls, gorges and glaciers - all in the shadow of such iconic peaks as Wetterhorn, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Accommodation is both plentiful and atmospheric, and the route has lots of bad-weather alternatives. Despite the nearby presence of popular resorts like Grindelwald, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen and Mürren, the Tour of the Jungfrau Region explores some surprisingly remote landscapes, including part of a World Natural Heritage site.

I hope this guide is interesting to you

Cambodia

Cambodia's well and truly back on travellers' wish lists, and once you've marvelled at the Silver Pagoda and the stone gods of Angkor Wat, plunged into waterfalls, explored the wild Cardamom mountains and been massaged by blind masseurs in Siam Riep, it'll be a permanent fixture on yours. Offers coverage of activities around Siem Reap, and also covers the Mekong Discovery Trail and the Ramsar Wetlands and other dolphin sites.

I hope this guide is interesting to you

New Orleans

From French Quarter to St. Charles Avenue and its cable cars, from the Garden District to the city’s cemeteries with their iconic above-ground tombs, this book takes travelers to New Orleans as never before, providing a fascinating chronological history and walking tours of the city from its earliest days up to modern times. A separate tour covers every fifty years of history, pointing out key figures as well as regular citizens who made the city what it is today. These one-of-a-kind guide allow readers to move through time as never before, bringing them face to face with the people and events behind some of America’s most important historical landmarks and locations. No other guidebooks draw so much on the first-hand accounts of those involved in the historic events that transpired in the areas covered—making readers feel as if they are experiencing living history. Each book features: * Two popout® maps—a historical map showing the area as it once was; and a modern map marking every stop on the tour and place mentioned in the text. * Additional color maps and up to 40-60 photos, both historical and modern * An introduction by an expert that sets the area in historical context * A timeline showing key historical events * A detailed walking tour of the present-day site, interspersed with first-hand accounts interspersed in the text or included as sidebars * Concise and colorful biographies of key historical figures * Where to stay and eat, and places to visit nearby

I hope this guide is interesting to you

Okavango

After The South African Bushveld—A Field Guide from the Waterberg, this is the second comprehensive field guide to be published in southern Africa that covers a comprehensive cross-section of the most prominent animals, plants, birds, fish, insects and tracks and signs of a particular region. It includes a detailed natural history section for a greater understanding of the people, plus geology, habitats and ecology of the region. This book negates the need to carry more than one guide book when visiting the Okavango. Contents include: History of the region, Geology, Habitats, Ecology, Mammals (& diseases), Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, Scorpions, Spiders, Insects, Butterflies & moths, Fish, Flowers, Trees, Grasses, Tracks & signs, Basic survival techniques, Walking and boating safaris. LEE GUTTERIDGE was born in the UK in 1973. His parents moved to South Africa, where he was educated. Wildlife is his passion, a calling he has been intimately involved in since leaving school. He is the principal trainer at Entabeni Private Game Reserve. He has been a field guide for 16 years and is the chairman of the Field Guides Association of the Waterberg. He lives in the Waterberg with his wife Sarah and two children. TONY REUMERMAN was born and raised on the Highveld of South Africa and from an early age developed an interest in bird, insect and plant life. He was educated at St. John Bosco College in Daleside where his interest in natural history unfolded, becoming an obsession during his years as a soldier in Namibia and a microbiology student in Johannesburg. Excursions into wildlife areas in southern Africa became so regular that he decided to become a game ranger. He was to spend eight years guiding, managing and training other guides at Sabi Sabi Game Reserve in the Kruger region before moving, in 2000, to the Okavango where he joined Wilderness Safaris. He heads up the guide-training team and has an avid interest in mammal behavior, photography, botany and ornithology.

I hope this guide is interesting to you

Trickster

All cultures have tales of the trickster—a crafty creature or being who uses cunning to get food, steal precious possessions, or simply cause mischief. He disrupts the order of things, often humiliating others and sometimes himself. In Native American traditions, the trickster takes many forms, from coyote or rabbit to raccoon or raven. The first graphic anthology of Native American trickster tales, Trickster brings together Native American folklore and the world of comics. In Trickster more than twenty Native American tales are cleverly adapted into comic form. Each story is written by a different Native American storyteller who worked closely with a selected illustrator, a combination that gives each tale a unique and powerful voice and look. Ranging from serious and dramatic to funny and sometimes downright fiendish, these tales bring tricksters back into popular culture in a very vivid form. From an ego-driven social misstep in “Coyote and the Pebbles” to the hijinks of “How Wildcat Caught a Turkey” and the hilarity of “Rabbit’s Choctaw Tail Tale,” Trickster provides entertainment for readers of all ages and backgrounds. Along with compiling and editing the book, artist Matt Dembicki illustrated one of the featured trickster tales. Dembicki is the founder of D.C. Conspiracy, a comic creators’ collaborative in Washington, DC, and has won acclaim for his nature graphic novel, Mr. Big. He currently works as an editor for a higher-education association.

I hope this guide is interesting to you

Food Sake Tokyo

Chef, sommelier, journalist, and restaurant consultant Yukari Sakamoto guides the reader through the gourmet delights of this fascinating city—from the world’s largest fish market to the Kappabashi kitchenware district. She is a Japanese American whose insider’s view of Japanese cuisine started when she took a unique position in the depachika (epicurean food hall) at the world-renowned Takashimaya department store in Tokyo. Food Sake Tokyo demystifies the ingredients, traditional dishes, and culture surrounding all things culinary in Tokyo. Sakamoto leads the reader to the best food that Tokyo has to offer, explaining and sampling along the way. You’ll learn which sushi fish are in season throughout the year; where to find the best knives, lacquerware, pottery, and kitchen gadgets; how to choose sake and shochu. The guide includes lively primers on sea vegetables and wagashi (Japanese confections), cheap eats, and dining customs, as well as how the specialty foods of Japan are produced and prepared and the country’s unique food traditions. For anyone interested in Japanese food, this is a must-have lexicon of the tastes and fashions of Tokyo’s cuisine.

I hope this guide is interesting to you

21st Century Tokyo

Authors Julian Worrall and Erez Golani Solomon present eighty-three buildings, from world-renowned projects such as Herzog & de Meuron's Prada building and FOA's spectacular Yokohama International Passenger Terminal, to quirky private houses and soaring office towers of glass and steel. Alongside Western architects, who have built some of their most outstanding projects in Tokyo, the authors showcase recent works of celebrated Japanese architects, including Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito, Fumihiko Maki, and Kenzo Tange. Incisive essays introduce each building not just from an architectural perspective, but also as part of the social, cultural, and political tapestry of the city, creating a full and fascinating portrait of the metropolis. The book is divided into seven easy-to-navigate chapters, each covering a different Tokyo district, with detailed maps and access information, and illustrated throughout with stunning black-and-white photography by Joshua Lieberman. This is an indispensable guidebook for the professional architect, the sightseer, or anyone with an interest in contemporary Japan. Tokyo—one of the most innovative and forward-thinking cities in the world, and nowhere is this more evident than in its modern architecture. Eighty-three of the city's latest buildings are gathered in these pages and introduced not just from an architectural perspective but as part of the social, cultural, and political tapestry of the city. With stunning black-and-white photography spotlighting a wide range of projects, from the monumental masterpieces of famous architects to the everyday buildings often overlooked, this is a full and fascinating overview of the architectural landscape of twenty-first-century Tokyo.

I hope this guide is interesting to you

Madeira

The book that made walking on Madeira so popular. In print since 1981, with over half a million copies sold. Pocket-sized and in full colour, the guide describes six car tours (with fold-out touring map), highlighting places where you can stop for a walk or just a stroll to a lovely picnic setting. But the major part of the book is devoted to 100 different long and short walk routes, illustrated with large-scale topographical maps (1:40,000). While keen hillwalkers have long known about the island's mountainous terrain, what has attracted visitors of all ages and abilities is the opportunity to walk the 'levadas' - the paths beside the island's irrigation channels. The Sunday Times said: 'A remarkable paperback which may have done more than any other to change the way its readers spend their holidays; this book single-handedly turned levada-walking into something approaching a craze.' Walking on Madeira is superb all year round. Walks can be done from a hired car or by using the excellent public bus network (the book contains copious up-to-date timetables, one of its key features). The authors spend a month on the island every year, rechecking the routes, and maintain a unique on-line update service to keep users abreast of any route changes since publication.

I hope this guide is interesting to you

USA

In 1950, when no mountain taller than 8,000 meters had ever been climbed, Maurice Herzog led an expedition of French climbers to the summit of an 8,075-meter (26,493-foot) Himalayan peak called Annapurna. But unlike other climbs, the routes up Annapurna had never been charted. Herzog and his team had to locate the mountain using crude maps, pick out a single untried route, and go for the summit. Annapurna is the unforgettable account of this heroic climb and of its harrowing aftermath, including a nightmare descent of frostbite, snow blindness, and near death. Herzog’s masterful narrative is one of the great mountain-adventure stories of all time.

I hope this guide is interesting to you

Costa Rica Map

São Paulo isn’t the Brazil of surf, sand, and sambas. Yet over 4 million travelers head to this global financial mecca each year to shop the city’s 70+ malls and visit its equally vast collection of museums, which offer everything from traditional crafts and extreme modern art to a museum that houses tens of thousands of poisonous snakes. It’s also a gourmand’s paradise, serving up Portuguese, Italian, Arabic, Spanish, Japanese, and dozens of other cuisines. Time Out São Paulo helps visitors make the most of this sprawling, sophisticated city. Written by a team of local journalists, it offers in-depth coverage of local foods, artists, musicians, sports, and festivals, with critic’s picks for the best bars, restaurants, and cultural highlights in a variety of categories. Tips on exploring the Central Park of São Paulo, the lovely Parque de Ibirapuera, help visitors escape the city’s chaos.

I hope this guide is interesting to you

Copenhagen

During the heyday of camel caravan traffic--from the eighth century CE arrival of Islam in North Africa to the early twentieth-century building of European colonial railroads that linked the Sudan with the Atlantic--the Sahara was one of the world's great commercial highways, bringing gold, slaves, and other commodities northward and sending both manufactured goods and Mediterranean culture southward into the Sudan. Historian Ralph A. Austen here tells the remarkable story of an African world that grew out of more than one thousand years of trans-Saharan trading. Perhaps the most enduring impact of this trade and the common cultural reference point of trans-Saharan Africa was Islam. Austen traces this faith in its various forms--as a legal system for regulating trade, an inspiration for reformist movements, and a vehicle of literacy and cosmopolitan knowledge. He also analyzes the impact of European overseas expansion, which marginalized trans-Saharan commerce in global terms but stimulated its local growth. Indeed, trans-Saharan culture not only adapted to colonial changes, but often thrived upon them, remaining a potent force into the twenty-first century.

I hope this guide is interesting to you

Cracow

An exciting new addition to Odyssey's "Companion" series, exploring Mongolia's history, culture and geography through insightful writing, plenty of practicalities, and beautiful imagery. Mongolia is a land of constant surprises. Renowned for its classic rolling steppe land -from where, in times past, nomadic Mongol clans and confederations swept out to conquer much of the known world - it also boasts snow-capped peaks towering over wide, grassy valleys, meandering rivers and great lakes, as well as badlands, dramatic gorges and mighty sand dunes rising from flat desert floors. Within these enormous vistas much of the old Mongolia can still be found, with herdsmen, horses and heart-warming hospitality wherever you go. But in its growing cities a new Mongolia is emerging, shaking loose from its Soviet-era shackles and making the most of a liberating free-market economy. This beautifully illustrated book provides a comprehensive and insightful guide to the diverse natural history and rich culture of 'The Land of the Eternal Blue Sky.' 210 color illustrations; 8 b&w illustrations. About the Author American-born Carl Robinson first came to Asia as a Peace Corps worker in Vietnam, before becoming a news correspondent during that country’s seminal war with the USA. In 1977 he moved to Australia, where he worked as a foreign correspondent for Newsweek magazine. An extended trip to Mongolia opened his heart and mind to this fascinating country, and formed the inspiration and basis for the book Mongolia. He is based in Queensland, Australia.

I hope this guide is interesting to you

New York Shortlist 2010

The second edition of our popular map of the Camino de Santiago is now available. The Camino de Santiago (the Way of St James) is a glorious walk across the north of Spain, following an ancient pilgrimage route west to the magnificent cathedral at Santiago de Compostela. 40 full-colour trail maps at 1:100,000 scale and 6 city maps guide pilgrims across this ever-popular route, walked by more than 100,000 pilgrims each year. This mapbook strips the Camino de Santiago down to its bare essentials. Each map includes picture icons for accommodation, cafés, restaurants, shops, tourist information, banks and cashpoints. New for the second edition is a multilingual key in English, Spanish, French and German. 7 detailed accommodation pages list every albergue (pilgrim hostel) along the way, along with hotels and other places to stay for every budget. Camino de Santiago Map is lightweight, compact, and slides into pockets or backpacks. In book format with an easy-to-use covered spiral-bound spine, the mapbook lies flat and stays open even during the strongest gales: no wrestling or origami skills required.

I hope this guide is interesting to you
