The <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html">final flight of the space shuttle program</a> is scheduled to launch this morning, weather permitting. The twelve-day Atlantis mission includes a crew of four plus the first iPhone.<br />

The first shuttle launched on April 12, 1981, just over thirty years ago. Over the years we watched Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavor speed away from the earth's surface. Many of us grew complacent, even indifferent, until the <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_256.html">Challenger tragedy</a> on January 28, 1886, when seven lives were lost. During each launch since then we all caught our breath at the moment when we heard the words, "<a href="http://spaceflightnow.com/challenger/timeline/">throttle up</a>," praying we would not see a repeat of that horrible day in NASA history, our history.<br />

The family first appeared on <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411040/"><i>Wife Swap</i></a>, twice, introducing us to amateur storm-chaser Richard Heene, his trusting wife, and their three hapless sons. Later Richard Heene <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33330516/ns/us_news-life/">sent up a weather balloon and reported that his young son was inside</a>. The balloon careened for two hours, followed by military helecopters, shutting down Denver International Airport. When the balloon landed, young Falcon Heene was nowhere to be found. The boy later accidentally confessed that the event was a publicity stunt. Dad was<a href="http://articles.cnn.com/2009-12-23/justice/colorado.balloon.boy.sentencing_1_richard-heene-balloon-flight-sentenced?_s=PM:CRIME"> sentenced to 90 days</a>. Now the Heenes are<a href="http://www.balloonboyflyingsaucer.com/"> auctioning off the infamous balloon, calling it a "Flying Saucer</a>." (Hurry - bidding ends June 7th.) Since the Heenes are not allowed to profit from their crime, the hoped-for $1 million will go to aid Japanese earthquake and tsunami victims. Just another publicity stunt.<br />

<b>Congressman Weiner's private problem.</b> Congressman <a href="http://www.weiner.house.gov/">Anthony Weiner</a> is at the center of a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/01/anthony-weiner-twitter-photo_n_869769.html">Twitter scandal</a>. Accusations involve a lewd photo of what you could call his namesake. The jokes just write themselves, so I won't bother. Congressman Weiner says he didn't send the photo, so apparently his account was hacked. He will not, however, say for sure whether or not the photo is that of Weiner, Jr. Everyone should stop grilling him, so to speak, until evidence proves him guilty or innocent.<br />

<b>New USDA MyPlate.</b> The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) has replaced the traditional Food Pyramid with <a href="http://www.choosemyplate.gov/">MyPlate</a>, because, presumably, we're too dense to understand the chart unless it's in the shape of an actual <i>plate.</i> If that's the case, maybe government should shift its focus to our educational system.<br />

<b>Lunatic protesters of Westboro Baptist Church.</b> <a href="http://www.joplinglobe.com/tornadomay2011">Joplin, Missouri, USA was devastated</a> by an <a href="http://www.spc.noaa.gov/efscale/">EF5 tornado</a> on May 22nd, resulting in the deaths of at least 132 people. More are missing. That's the <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/05/27/missouri.tornado/index.html?npt=NP1">highest death toll on record for a single tornado since tracking began in 1950</a>. President Barack Obama plans to visit Joplin on Sunday, May 29th to view the damage, offer his support, and perhaps attend a memorial service. But the holier-than-thou members of Westboro Baptist Church feel this is wrong. <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/ac/20110526/pl_ac/8540791_unwelcome_westboro_baptist_church_plans_to_protest_joplin_tornado_victims">They plan to protest at Sunday's events</a>. Isn't it about time to lock these people away? Disturbing the peace... defamation of character... hate crimes... treason... something?<br />

On the Family Radio website <a href="http://www.familyradio.com/facts/">Harold Camping points to several spiritual signs</a>, supposedly paving the way to Judgment Day:<br />
<blockquote>"Jesus warned of several spiritual signs, such as the complete degradation of the Christian church, the devastating moral breakdown of society, the re-establishment of National Israel in 1948, the emergence of the 'Gay Pride Movement,' and the complete disregard of the Bible in all of society today as direct evidence of His return."</blockquote>But then again, <a href="http://www.familyradio.com/facts/">Harold Camping also said the world would end back in 1994</a>. When the world didn't end, Camping admitted that "important subsequent biblical information was not yet known," so his book - <i>1984?</i> - was incomplete. <br />
<br />
Camping states that <a href="http://www.familyradio.com/facts/">two events will occur on May 21st, 2011</a>, "one more wonderful than can be imagined; the other more horrific than can be imagined."<br />
<br />
First, the earthquake. It's the catalyst for both the wonderful and the horrific. The quake will "throw open all graves."<br />
<br />
The remains of believers will be "instantly transformed into glorified spiritual bodies to be forever with God." (That's the wonderful part, of course.)<br />
<br />
The remains of unsaved people, on the other hand, will be "thrown out upon the ground to be shamed." Zombies! Zombies! Zombies! (That's the horrific part, if you were wondering.)<br />
<br />
Everyone left behind on Earth will suffer in "a world of horror and chaos beyond description," gradually dying off until a final blaze of glory on October 21st, 2011. Mark your calendars.<br />

Final note: Someone at the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) deserves a raise. They posted an article about <a href="http://emergency.cdc.gov/socialmedia/zombies_blog.asp">preparing for a zombie apocalypse</a>. Imagine - the CDC - helping us to fight zombies! The article is designed to attract a younger, media-savvy crowd, the sort that normally doesn't visit their site. Readers think they're learning about survival in the age of zombies; in reality they're learning how to create a household emergency kit. Genius!<br />
