Well, if you happen to live in the NYC area and are able to skip out on work in the morning, you can see her for free. She will be taking the stage at Bryant Park as part of the Good Morning America concert series. She will start at 8:44am, but we'd suggest getting there early so you can get a good spot. So don't oversleep, make sure you grab some coffee, and then head down to Bryant Park (41st St. @ 6th Ave.) on Friday morning.

In the past two years, Philadelphia's Dr. Dog, has managed to dig themselves into the hearts of fans and critics alike with their revival of an optimistic and joyful pastime. 60's Pop. With 2007's We All Belong and its uplifting tour they made many a 'best of' list and shook the floorboards of many a dancehall. It is with July's fifth offering from the group, Fate, that they seem hell-bent on maintaining everything they've built for themselves thus far. Good news is they've succeeded.

Fate is one of those listens where you're not ready for it to end, and by the final chords of the closer, "My Friend," you're ready to hit the repeat button. That first listen is simply a summer's day, a weekend trip to the waterhole, an afternoon in the sun. The second listen is a reunion with old friends at that dive bar down the block, a night at the pool hall, a kick-start of the warmly lit jukebox. The third listen is fireworks over the lake, roman-candle wars in the dark, bottle rockets on the blacktop. If you're sensing a common theme here that's good. Dr. Dog's fifth movement cements them as impossibly and comfortably classic.

The lovely comparisons to the likes of The Beatles and Beach Boys are all here, and the image of Scorsese directing his lens toward Dr. Dog instead of The Band also come to mind when they are at their funky & soulful best. Tracks like "The Breeze" and "From" stand out with 60's pop sensibilities, as vocalist/guitarist Scott McMicken manages to sound like Neil Young fronting the Beatles (also "The Rabbit, The Bat & The Reindeer"). The heavy hitters of the album though, benefit greatly from the growl of bassist Toby Leaman. The two trade off lead vocal duties throughout the album, but it's hard to find the Leaman fronted tracks inferior. With "Hang On" his voice is exasperated with hope, pleading with world-weariness over a George Harrison-inspired lead guitar to "hang on just a little while more."

Leaman's howl also adds to Fate what its predecessor lacked, a dark edge. On "The Ark" the boys from Philly question the blind assumptions of the apostle, the lover and the patriot over an orchestration that sounds like Peter Tosh sold his soul to the devil. With "The Beach" that same cynical swagger is applied to a dark track about fate and its coincidental irony. Both feel as though they could have been taken as B-Side hits to The Beatles', "I Want You" or "Because." But I think it is "Army of Ancients" that benefits most from this bassist's croon. Mixed with its optimistically romantic lyrics and lounge orchestration, Dr. Dog create an instant classic.

A lovely step forward, but still full of what makes Dr. Dog tick, Fate is a welcome companion to this summer... and this fall, and this winter, and so on.

The indie popsters will be hitting the road once again in September, joining up with Ra Ra Riot for not-to-miss tour. Now that we've had our fill of their debut album, Talking Through Tin Cans, the guys have offered up some new tunes in the form of a covers album to keep us content until their tour begins. They covered a pretty wide range of artists, including Roy Orbison, Paul Simon, Fleetwood Mac and The Talking Heads. Interesting, right?

For the next few days, the band is offering this collection of covers for free over on their blog - ambenders.blogspot.com. Here is what the band had to say about The Bedroom Covers

hey gang,
here are a few tracks, that we are calling the bedroom covers. as you may have guessed, all these songs are covers... and yes, we did them at home in my room! the songs that you hear here are just songs we really really like. we didn't deliberate over which songs to pick. we didn't try to stick to a certain time period or genre. we just recorded songs we were going to be singing around the house anyway (and we needed the practice).

these songs sound the way they do, because we recorded them with a laptop and one mic. we used mainly acoustic guitars and shakers because that's what we had lying around, and we couldn't make much noise in our apartment anyway. we didn't spend time arranging any of these either. we learned the chords and the lyrics (which was pretty easy because we've heard all these songs hundreds of times), and we played 'em. what you hear at the basis of the recording is generally a first take. sometimes we added some background vocals or another guitar part here or there, because the songs we were covering had a lot more going on than us, and we were feeling a bit inadequate...

but hey, you're always fighting a losing battle when you're recording covers, because 99.99% of the time the cover isn't going to be as good the original. well, for the record, let it be known that none of our covers are as good as the originals. that's part of why we wanted to give all these tracks away for free. if you haven't heard one of these songs before, you should go out and buy it from the original artist, RIGHT NOW. disclaimer aside: if you want to hear some kids having a lot of fun playing some of their favorite songs ever, check these out.

The Bedroom Covers
01. Roy Orbison - "Crying"
02. Paul Simon - "Mother And Child Reunion"
03. The Ronettes - "Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love?"
04. The Cardigans - "Lovefool"
05. The Smiths - "I Won't Share You"
06. The Crystals - "He's A Rebel"
07. Randy Newman - "Marie"
08. Johnny Mercer / Rude Bloom - "Fools Rush In"
09. Velvet Underground - "Temptation Inside Your Heart"
10. Fleetwood Mac - "Dreams"
11. Talking Heads - "Pull Up The Roots"
12. "Caroline, No (Beach Boys Remix)"
13. The Rontettes - "Why Don't They let Us Fall In Love?" (Daytrotter)

Eagles of Death Metal might be one of the most fun live bands out there. The guys have laid low over the last year or so, but are coming back on October 21 with a new release, the aptly titled Heart On. According to the tipsters we heard from, the release stands "firm." Oh, those wacky kids in EODM.

Before the album hits stores, the band will be going on a co-headlining tour with The Hives. The boys have promised that they will unleash their rock on a world-dominating tour closer to the launch date. Considering our past with Boots Electric and Babyduck, we believe them. This time let's just hope that they remember to call us the day after.

It has been six years since we've gotten a new album from The Pretenders, and it seems that our wait is just about over. The band has completed work on Break Up The Concrete, which will be their ninth album from their legendary career. The disc will land in stores on September 23 via Shangri-La Music, which you might recognize as the US home for The Duke Spirit's latest album, Neptune.

Break Up The Concrete was recorded with a speedy ten days, resulting in a much more stripped down, rootsy sound that we're anxious to hear. This time round we see Chrissie Hynde collaborating with an entirely new group of musicians, including guitarist James Walbourne, pedal steel player Eric Heywood, bassist Nick Wilkinson and legendary drummer Jim Keltner.

Shangri-La has put together a virtual scavenger hunt, allowing fans to pick up MP3s as we near the release of the new album. This week you can roll over to
Spinner and snag the track "Boots Of Chinese Plastic."

Next month the Outside Lands Music Festival will descend onto San Francisco. We are going to have two, count 'em two, reporters there covering the ins and outs of all the activity during the event. (With all that is going on there, just one wasn't enough.)

Speaking of wanting more, the festival is bringing some cool additions to the event. Five attractions will act as the pillars of the festival, ranging from technology and art to food and eco initiatives. The producers of Outside Lands want there to be an all-encompassing local experience, and what better way to do it than with local businesses? Peep the list to see who will be involved, and get ready to rock.

+++

Emerging Technology
CrowdFire, created by Outside Lands and Federated Media, and presented by Microsoft, will be an online and onsite destination where music, culture and technology enthusiasts participate in a massive, "crowdsourced" act of digital creativity. Participants upload their audio, images, video and text to the CrowdFire online community, then watch as it fuses into a collective expression of the Outside Lands experience. CrowdFire's onsite Outside Lands pavilion will bring it all together in a visual feast of the senses - showcasing digital and creative technologies and offering fun ways to feed the flames, win prizes, vote for community favorites and more.

Environmental and Energy Conservation
Eco Lands, powered by PG&E, will bring festival attendees an interactive "green" experience featuring a solar powered stage, organic farmers' market and coffee bar, interactive energy efficiency exhibits, environmental education and a recycling center. The Solar Stage, provided by PG&E, will use solar panels to power all electrical equipment on the stage, serving as a working model for the versatility of solar power. Eco Lands will host a wide variety of environmentally-oriented non-profit organizations generating awareness about issues such as water conservation and climate change. Beyond Eco Lands the festival will reduce its impact on the environment by providing recyclable or compostable utensils, cups and plates and will have plenty locations to dispose of waste including hundreds of recycling and compost bins. PG&E's Climate Smart will purchase carbon offsets for the event, making it one of the largest carbon neutral music festivals in the country.

Local Wine
100 years ago the Bay Area was home to one of the world's largest wineries, Winehaven, located on Point Molate in Richmond, CA. The festival will pay homage to this landmark through the "Winehaven" Tent. The tent will showcase local vintners offering regional specialties such as a coastal Pinot Noir, old vine Zinfandel, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, sparkling wine cocktails and wines from San Francisco's newest winery Foggy Bridge.

A Taste of the Bay Area
The Bay Area's cuisine is known to be eclectic and adventurous from the Mission's taquerias to dim sum in Chinatown to the nouveau California cuisine that defines many the local restaurant menus. Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival is going above and beyond the standard festival food by engaging the Bay Area's food resources. The festival will showcase fresh, locally grown organic produce and meat as well as featuring local restaurants that put the Bay Area on the map as one of the best places for discerning palates.

Outsider Art
A stellar team of visual artists have made the Outside Lands site a very special place to hear music. Each of our six stages will be decorated by a different artist: Thomas Campbell, R. Pimple, Jeff Canham, Matt Leines, Monica Canilao and Rich Jacobs. With these visual mavericks on board, Outside Lands will be a full-scale celebration of underground and outsider art.

It wasn't until the last few minutes of the show when Jarvis started unbuttoning his shirt, half serious half parody, to wild shrieks. Any other performer of his caliber (and there are only few) would have taken out/off that ace card an hour earlier. Thing is, Jarvis has about 52 ace cards he goes through before he starts to think about resorting to cheap thrills. Some of my favorites are: the finger popsicle wag, the horizontal elbow jab, the baby-bottom mic slap, and the list goes on. He came out pretty much at 10 on the dot in his usual gentleman drapery: sharp suit, drainpipe jeans, buttery boots. He gave out a few chocolates to people in the front (I couldn't help thinking of "Mis-shapes" off the Different Class album - his quote about how Mis-shapes are the chocolates that aren't perfect enough to go in the fancy boxes). And from there it simply was full-on for ninety minutes, a rock catharsis that left everyone in the Music Hall completely bewitched.

Slinking over the entire stage, Jarvis seemed especially emotive, more so than the show last year at Webster Hall. There were times when it looked like a poltergeist was trapped in his jeans. Only during his storytelling in between songs did he stay relatively still, but you could tell even then that he was just cocking the pin back. He can turn possessed in a hurry, and I'm always suspect about those scuba-diving glasses he wears. How do they not fly off when he's flying and twisting about? He basically comes undone on stage! It's like that Tom Wolfe joke on The Simpsons, where someone spills red wine on his white seersucker suit and he just rips it off and he's got another one underneath.

He covered most of the terrific tracks of the self-titled album from last year ("Tonite," "Big Julie," "I Will Kill Again," etc) and he also unveiled a cluster of new songs, introducing each song with mumblings and anecdotes (my personal wish is that Jarvis' third act in his career will be that of a simple monologist). He's become the master of small talk and making things seem funnier and bigger than they should be. It's been almost thirty years since Jarvis first started Pulp, and in all those years he has honed all his stories, twitches and snaps down to a brilliant sear. The man is hypnotic, for sure. I always thought all those brooding paintings of him that Elizabeth Peyton did in the '90s never really captured what makes Jarvis so special, that whole caged-animal placidity he's got about him. When he talks, he does so with deliberate pacing and consideration. Seconds later, he's ripping your head off. Then, he thanks you for it.

He closed out the night with a cover of Master C & J's "Face It" (I'm not super familiar with it), which I think was probably something he put together specifically for the Pitchfork festival in Chicago a few nights before, as he introduced the song as a tribute to the old Chicago house days. I would've paid an extra $10 just to see him do Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" like he did last year at Webster Hall, but I can't complain. The encore before "Face It" was the bittersweet track "Running The World" which has that great chorus line. In a town full of the cunts he sings of (this fact of which I'm positive Jarvis privately snickered to), it got served up as the ultimate Cocker valentine to New York.

What better way to show the titled sequence for your coverage of the Bejing Summer Olympics than with the Gorillaz duo of Jamie Helwett and Damon Albarn? The BBC Olympic trailer went online today, and it is based on a traditional Chinese folktale, which features Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy on an Olypic-sized adventure to the stadium. In other words, <a href="http://www.thetripwire.com/news/2008/7/22/damon-albarns-i-monkey-i-coming-to-xl-recordings"target="_new">Journey To The West, which we have talked about before. Consider it a peek at what we can expect to see with the opera.

It's hella cooler than the ads we get. Could you imagine if we got something like this on our TV boxes...just one more reason why we love the UK.
