Leaving your inflatable boat in the water for more than a few days is a sure indication that marine growth will prosper at the bottom fabric. Regular bottom paints will not do so well because they will not adhere well to the fabric. Thick paints are just "too thick" to allow for easy storage without cracking the paint. Thinning the paint is out of the question as though the boat will deflate and store well, it will not be free from marine growth. There are paints that leech an active ingredient like cuprous oxide in the water but they are ineffective when dry. They are also quite messy to handle.

There are plenty of paint manufacturers who have come out with bottom paints for inflatable boats. The application is two step and starts with the application of a primer coat then followed with superior quality cuprous-oxide bottom paint.

The primer is called Hy-Grip and should be applied after the bottom has been thoroughly clean. First, wash the bottom with soap and water to strip the marine growth after which scrub the bottom with solvent on Hypalon boats and MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) on PVC boats. It is best that no trace of oxidation is evident on the bottom of the boat. To check, soak a clean rag in the solvent. Wipe the bottom of the boat with the clean rag. If no color shows up, then the boat's bottom is clean.

For new boats, you should remove all the surface plasticizers from the bottom fabric. Most plasticizers can be wiped off with a rag soaked in solvent. Some inflatable boats are tougher that you might have to use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub off the plasticizer. The Interlux #202 is very effective in removing silicones. You might want to consider using this to remove plasticizers, oxidized materials and silicone o the fabric's surface for ease in applying the primer.

Once you are 100% sure that the boat's bottom is clean, apply the Hy-Grip with a clean brush. The Hy-Grip is the material that will bond the paint with the boat's bottom. Any bottom paint will do but highly recommended is the Shipbottom Premium Performance antifouling paint. Look for a bottom paint that is hard-drying and flexible with high cuprous oxide content (about 62.5%). This type of bottom paint will last for seasons. The boat can also be easily stored without fear of flaking or cracking paints.

Make sure the paint line of the boat's bottom is above the waterline on a fully loaded boat. Mark the line to make sure. The bottom paint should be good for two seasons at least. The primer should last longer unless you don't take care of the boat.

RIBS should also be painted in the same process as that with any conventional fiberglass or aluminum boats but with the addition of painting the fiberglass or aluminum bottom with the appropriate primer. Note that the side and stern tubes are in the water when the RIB is docked.

There are some excellent and some very poor carp fisheries in France, I have fished a fair few of them, and we regularly hear reports from customers at our lake, comments that are
not always complimentary, relating to venues previously visited in France.

Unfortunately it is a fact that there are plenty of unscrupulous lake owners in France with little or no knowledge of fisheries management - please be careful !

It is important to find the right venue for you, carp anglers do not all want the same thing, so don't just follw the crowds, look for what you really want in your holiday.

Some of the factors that might be important to you are ;

price
size of the carp
size of the lake
degree of difficulty of fishing
distance from the ferry port/ travel time to venue
availability of airport collection
can the venue be booked exclusively ?
Is there accommodation at the lake and how far from the water is it ?
do the owners live on site ?
location/climate
availability of food at the venue

The first advice that I would give to prospective customers is to look very carefully at the website of the venue in question. Are there photos of carp which match up to the claimed stock - if you don't see plenty of photos of fish of a similar size then be very wary. This also applies to the size of the lake (most lakes are smaller than they are claimed to be) I have spoken to a lot of people who have turned up at a venue to find that the lake is half its advertised size...

How difficult is the lake to fish and does this correspond to your level of skill and experience ? Often this is tied to the size of the lake and what you are used to fishing in the UK, if you are used to fishing small waters then it might be best to look at a similar sized lake in France.

This is not to say that all small waters are easy, in fact some of the smaller waters in France can be very difficult indeed, so check out the catch reports on the website.

The location of the venue and the distance from the ferry port at which you will be arriving will obviously determine the length of your journey in France, and will also have an impact on the weather that can be expected. If your chosen venue is in Northern France and you are looking to book a holiday in April or October for example, don't expect to be spending the week in shorts and t-shirt !

On the other hand, if you are taking your partner with you, the likelihood is that she will be looking for a holiday in the summertime and will be hoping for plenty of sunshine, so the venues located in the southern half of the country will offer the best chance of good weather.

The journey time to some of these southern venues can be extensive, from Calais down to the Limousin area can take 8 to 10 hours driving with a copuple of stops on the way, some of the venues in the Dordogne are 10-12 hours drive. Fortunately, some of these venues offer a package that includes collection from the nearest airport and hire of a full carp fishing set-up for the week. Although driving in France is very relaxing compared to the UK, If you are not fond of driving then a venue that has this option may well be worth considering.

Do you want to share the lake and facilities with other anglers ? If not then you will need to choose from one of the many venues offering exclusive bookings. Choosing this type of venue means that you will have exclusive use of the lake and the on-site facilities. The main advantage of this is that there will not be other anglers fishing the water, this rules out the possibility of having your holiday spoiled by others.

Does the venue offer accommodation ? Lakeside accommodation takes a carp fishing holiday to another level, and if you are taking your partner or the whole family with you, they won't want to spend the week in bivvies ! There are only a few venues that offer high quality accommodation, and these venues are justifiably popular, so you will need to book well in advance, possibly up to 2 years in advance in some cases ! Remember to check how far from the lake the accommodation is - the closer the better !

Are the venue owners English and do they live on site ? This can provide extra security and reassurance for guests should you have any problems or emergencies whilst you are there.

Finally - does the venue offer a food package ? Whether you are taking your partner or not, this option can be very attractive, meaning that you will be catered for, with breakfast, lunch and evening meal provided - the ultimate option for spoiling yourself !

Two carp fishing holiday venues Les Croix and Les Levades offers many of the above options - please take a look at the websites !

Forget about vinyl peel-and-stick numbers as they will not stick on Hypalon or PVC for long. The vinyl numbers will stick alright but, be ready to install a new one after a few months or so especially if you fold your inflatable boat for stowing. Your best option is to buy glue-on numbers that were manufactured especially for inflatable boats. These glue-on numbers are available in most marine supply stores. Choose the appropriate color – dark colored numbers for light colored boats and white colored numbers for dark colored boats. Installing them is easy as you just have to glue the numbers on the boat just like a repair patch.

However, glue-on numbers takes a lot or work as you need to prepare the fabric just like in repairing a patch. An easy way to number and name your boat is to paint them on the boat using a stencil kit. There are stencil kits available in marine stores. Some kits include primers while other kits have vinyl paint to be painted directly to the boat. The one with the primer kit is more permanent but you have to consider that the sides of the boat are not susceptible to the harsh environment of its bottom. It's your choice.

Inflatable boats need to be properly maintained and taken care of. If done properly, you can increase the life span of your boat twice as long as expected. If you take care of your inflatable boat, you save money in the long haul.

Checking for leaks in your inflatable boat is a process that needs to be done first time you use your boat after months in storage or if you suspect that your inflatable has leaks. Inflate your boat hard. Make sure it is clean so that its surface has no sand or dirt on it. Pour 2 to 3 ounces of liquid soap and an equal amount of water in a container. Apply with a 2-inch brush the soap solution over the seams of the boat. If there are leaks, bubbles will appear on the leak. Mark the leaky part using a grease pencil. To check other parts of the boat, ask someone to help you hold the boat upright and on its side so you can check the inside seams too. If your boat has an inflatable keel, check that too.

Paint the inflation valves next with the soap solution. Make sure the caps are screwed tightly. If there is slight air-leak, that is expected and normal. Next, check the outside surface of the tubes. If there are no more visible bubbles indicative of leaks, hose down the boat to free it from the soapy paint.

Finding leaks in the bottom fabric is not as easy since the floor is not pressurized. The first step is t leave the boat inflated and inside a dry location. Make sure it is completely dry as you invert it and coat the bottom with talcum powder. Turn the boat right side up and support it from the ground. You can support it with four stools or ideally sawhorses. Add about 2 quarts of water inside the boat. Have someone slosh it around making sure no water sloshes out of the boat. View the bottom of the boat and if you see any dark spot (wet spot) on the powder, then there's your leak. Mark the leak and prepare to fix it.

A variety of lures are popular for catching largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, rock bass, crappie, bluegill, shellcrackers and other members of the sunfish family. These include a mix of traditional fishing lures as well as new technology.

In addition to catching bass and sunfish, these same fishing lures catch other popular freshwater fish including pike, pickerel, musky, catfish, striped bass, white bass other species.

Soft plastic worms were among the original bass fishing lures. Since the early versions, literally thousands of variations have been produced. rigs include Texas, Carolina, floating and wacky rigs. These lures catch largemouth, smallmouth, spotted and rock bass as well as an occasional crappie.

Jerk baits are another type of soft plastics. These simple lures are rigged on an offset shank hook or jig head. They are available in sizes for catching the sunfish, smallmouth bass and lunker largemouth bass.

Spinners are a simple, traditional type of fishing lure. They feature a metal or synthetic body, a simple spinning blade and a trailing treble hook. These lures catch a wide range of species from pumpkinseed sunfish to smallmouth bass.

Jigs are among the oldest lures but are still very popular. These come in hundreds of styles including classic bucktails, feather jigs, soft bodied grubs, shad bodies, tubes, etc.

For targeting species of panfish such as white crappie, marabou jigs are some of the most well known and effective jigs used in freshwater fishing.

The jig and pig lure consists of a combination of a simple jig with a natural pork rind. This rig is popular in some areas for catching largemouth bass.

Poppers are another type of lure that remains popular. This family of lures share a hard body with cupped or wedge shaped mouth. Used near dusk or dawn, these surface lures draw vicious strikes from hungry bass.

Crank baits are effective lures for bass, crappie and sunfish. They lures come in a variety of shapes and sizes, depending on the species of fish sought. Most float at rest and dive when retrieved. Crank baits share common characteristics such as a hard lip, multiple treble hooks.

Spoons are effective lures for catching bass, crappie, sunfish and other fish. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Spoons wobble or spin as they pass thru water. Depending on the type, spoons may be cast, trolled or jigged.

Soft bodied frog lures are among the most weedless of all rigs. The hooks are well concealed and they float on the surface, allowing anglers to cast into heavy vegetation where largemouth bass frequently lurk.

Tube lures feature a hollow tube which has tentacles on the rear. They are available in sizes from about an inch up to several inches in length. Small tubes are rigged on jig heads while larger versions are usually rigged on an offset shank hook similar to worm rigs.

Tube lures are used extensively for catching bluegill, pumpkinseed, rock bass, crappie and other sunfish.

When people think about a fishing vacation in Southwest Montana, their thoughts usually gravitate to fly fishing the Beaverhead River. The Beaverhead is one of the more prolific and challenging blue ribbon trout rivers that people come from all over the world to fly fish. This tailwater flows out of Clark Canyon Reservoir and is a small river in size but an enormous river in stature. With thousands of trout per mile and rarely more than 70 feet from bank to bank, the Beaverhead River is literally stacked with trout. Big Trout. The Beaverhead is known for its population of very large Browns and Rainbows, attracting fly fishers from all over. The Beaverhead's constant cold-water provided by the reservoir's outflow, coupled with the generally silt-free nature of the water and stable summertime flows create an ideal habitat for aquatic insects. This phenomenal insect habitat produces millions of bugs, which translates to prolific hatches throughout the summer. With so much food in the river, the trout can't help but get big.

When fly fishing the Beaverhead, you encounter a meandering river that creates countless holes and buckets, which provide ideal holding-water for trout. There are trout lyingaround every corner, and there is no shortage of corners on this winding river. A fly fishing angler should haveno difficulty in finding trout on the Beaverhead--the challenge comes in hooking and landing these strong and energetic trout. First, you must pick the right fly to imitate the hatch. With so many natural insects in the water column, it is essential that you pick a pattern that closely matches what the tout are keyed in on. Second, you need to have great presentation with your fly. Whether you are nymphing or throwing dries, a good drift dramatically improves your chances of hooking one of these fish. Finally, once you have hooked a trout, fighting them in the fast water and tight quarters is no easy task. A fish landed on the Beaverhead is a well earned fish.

The upper Beaverhead River, from the Dam to High Bridge, is generally fished with small nymphs. This isn't to say that at times there isn't amazing dry fly fishing, it is that most of the fish caught in this section are on nymphs. From High Bridge to Barretts, nymphing is still the most successful style of fly fishing, but more opportunities exist for catching Beaverhead trout on larger dries such as hoppers and crane flies. Bellow the Barretts' diversion the number of trout per mile decreases, but that doesn't mean that opportunities for trophy trout arediminished. Throwing hoppers in the later part of the summer between Dillon, Anderson Lane and Beaverhead Rock frequently produce trout well in excess of 20 inches. Streamer fishing is another style of fly fishing that can produce large fish on the Beaverhead River. Casting streamers under the willow-choked banks in the early hours just after dawn is very successful way to get a trophy Beaverhead Trout to eat.

The Beaverhead River is an impressive fishery with world-class fishing opportunities throughout the entire river. So whether it's fishing size 22 trico spinners in The Slick, nymphing the Axel Hole with PMDs or throwing hoppers on the lower river, the Beaverhead River has something to offer nearly every fly fishing angler.

You want to catch more fish so you really need to know a few vital things that put you ahead! You might have read in carp magazines what to do but here are some of the most powerful reasons why you really need to do certain things and most importantly why in order to optimise your baits and to maximise the numbers of fish you can catch! How you apply and adapt liquid foods is vital to your success!

Liquid foods are among the most potent substances you can exploit in your baits but they are nothing new. Honey and fermented proteinous foods among other things go back centuries, and molasses, sugar rich bioactive mineral and vitamin etc rich substances like honey and maple syrup and yeast extracts are just a few of the liquid foods that most carp anglers of my generation used in their special pastes, at least by the Seventies.

Liquids spread out into the water column extremely effectively and efficiently and can bring much faster results than just waiting for soluble powdered ingredients and additives etc in your baits to dissolve. This is just one reason why bait dips and soaks were so noticeably successful when used in the earlier days of winter fishing.

These days bait dips and soaks are used universally all year round by anglers without much thought at all; these have simply become yet another fashionable thing to do. Yet in the early eighties it became very much a habit of mine by way of experimentation to keep my baits in very much more hydrated forms and one method was to over load baits with liquid foods and include loads of sugar rich ingredients to in order to suck water inside baits and release soluble triggers and attractors etc far faster than normal! It is so ironical that syrups are sold by bait companies as something new, after all refiners (golden) syrup and black syrup and corn steep liquor have been used in carp baits for decades and decades!

But like most things in carp fishing, it takes only a little thought in order to create huge competitive edges. For instance, in the early eighties I was soaking my baits in neat flavour concoctions and massively improving my catches and this was not simply about fishing single hook baits at range, but over beds of boilies crumbled up and also soaked in neat flavours at close range or at range using homemade slim line spods.

You would be amazed at what you can use to deliver flavours to your swim that will cost far less than readymade baits. I could list dozens and dozens of material I have used with great success that deliver loads of stimulatory liquids into swims near or far, and many alternative methods too! A very simple edge is soaking the cheapest oats in neat flavours added to the cheapest liquids you can find boosted by cheap yeast extracts or more soluble yeast powders and molasses for instance.

I disagree that you need the readymade commercial liquids all the time without a seconds glance at other options. Having researched this kind of subject for the last 5 years it is shocking just how many foods in the local supermarket contain very vital feeding triggers, essential nutrition and stunning taste enhancers, attractors, sweeteners, and many bioactive factors that very much improve your results and differentiate your standard baits and baiting approaches and so on to keep you ahead of the fish and competing anglers!

Most of the ingredients and additives that can be bought from fishing companies can also be found elsewhere and often at cheaper prices. But even better than this, in so doing you will come across other substances maybe not even found in mainstream bait-making. These are among the secret substances with the components that can turn a good or a poor season into an incredible one. For example, I have a friend whom I advised on homemade bait substances for rivers that would reduce the numbers of smaller fish hooked and improve the weights and numbers of river carp and barbel hooked.

In the last 2 weeks he has put his new bait into action and his results have been simply staggering when compared to the rest of his season using popular readymade baits. The thing is though is that this result should not be any surprise whatsoever, especially considering his new baits are far cheaper than readymade bait. For one thing, in many waters, due to brand loyalty of anglers fishing there, the fish will most frequently basically keep on being fed the same baits over and over again, which contain the same essential nutrition and factors which those fish will inevitably come to recognise the more they get hooked on such baits.

If you imagine that you came along and established a bait with completely unique stimulatory factors and with a totally unique profile of stimulatory vital nutritional factors, then the fish will certainly for one thing have every reason to fall more easily for these baits due to simple lack of preconditioned caution, and all the more reason to exploit a new source of food that fills gaps that other baits and natural food do not fill in terms of complete nutrition needs at that moment in time.

If you know what you are doing you can deliberately alter readymade baits of all kinds of brands to be far more potent in the way they impact on the water and on fish, in different ways to standard baits! You do not have to make your own homemade baits of course, but having the knowledge to be able to do this to professional standards is priceless in empowering you to improve all your results with any readymade baits you happen to favour at any point in time. There are many substances and combinations of substances and more alternative special things you can do to readymade baits to improve their impacts on your fish that almost invariably will never have been exploited by any bait company; all it takes is the knowledge and awareness!

Liquids in baits are vital and as soluble or semi-soluble substances these really pack a punch but there are far more secrets to liquids than simply soaking boilies or pellets in them and expecting much improved results. For instance, all it can require is the addition of one or 2 totally unique new substances to skyrocket your catches despite suffering poor results on a water on readymade baits dipped in readymade bait dips.

All you need is understanding of natural principles of fish behaviours and means of manipulating and intensifying such behaviours and the right specific bait knowledge to succeed wherever your own fishing has possibly not lived up to previous expectations. You do not need to have a number of degrees in different scientific subjects to improve your baits. However one point I do want to highlight is that most anglers have little awareness of what their baits actually do when they interact with water and then make contact in any way with fish! To know much more about this when using readymade baits is a massive competitive advantage!

Also success is certainly not about use of huge volumes of bait which many well-known carp cult figures would have you believe; that is just a ploy to trick you into buying far more bait than you actually need and to make their companies loads of profits! In fact it is very shocking to discover just how many well-known anglers in the magazines know barely anything technically speaking not merely about the modes of action of their baits in fish and in water itself, (of bait substances in combination or even individually,) but in terms of impacts internally on fish!

This situation is simply crazy; you cannot have people recommending products when they do not understand them because you will certainly have even less chance of optimal success leveraging that bait and end up expecting miracles without the knowledge to truly exploit the individual advantages of a certain bait and its make-up! Just one example is this; years ago I fished a really well-known readymade bait on a water that had an amazing level of pressure. I fished it using all my bait chopped into halves and quarters and soaked in the proprietary strawberry oil and flavour recommended for those baits.

Yet my baits were totally under-optimised for performance! Sure I caught fish but what I know today tells me that I had absolutely no idea just how massively more effective those baits could have been optimised for that trip. Consequently I probably caught only a quarter of the fish I could have, and also missed out on numbers of very big fish, if not the largest and most wary fish in that lake. This is why really understanding bait is so extremely powerful!

If you are still in a mindset of using baits that have been heated in any way, such as boilies or steamed baits, then you are now in the Stone Age as far as I am concerned! I can make homemade baits that last as long functionally in the water as long as I will ever require them to last, but they are not boiled or cooked or heated in any way at all and so are still working to massively greater optimisation functionally and nutritionally!

Do not ever accept that your baits are catching you the most fish possible just because you and others are catching fish. I can guarantee you that you will not have optimised your baits as much as is possible and therefore you will have missed out on more fish or maybe bigger more wary fish. In fact if the average catch for an average individual on an average carp water is perhaps 50 to 300 fish in a season, you can bet that the actual numbers truly possible are more like 150 to 900 per season with correctly optimised and constantly adapted baits and bait formatting.

This is a scary fact that bait companies do not want you to know because for them to keep on making baits truly optimised and constantly adapted maybe even as often changed as every 3 weeks for highly pressured waters in order to keep ahead of the fish, this is just not a practical nor profitable possibility; but you can do this for yourself!

In fact I know from my personal conversations with many bait company bosses that most of the best baits they ever come up with will never be sold commercially because they simply are either not going to be accepted as practical baits by the masses, or they are simply not profitable to produce commercially for any of a whole host of possible reasons!

Anyway, the fact is that in making your own homemade baits you can make the kind of baits of the potency that commercial bait companies cannot offer for sale profitably! Even if all you do is use something familiar like supplementary lysine and ascorbic acid or lemon juice or vinegar or butyric acid for instance this can make all the difference to your catches. It depends a lot on what you are trying to optimise within your baits, the kinds of impacts you are aiming to achieve within your baits inside fish and actually in the waters, and so on.

Success with baits is far more about leveraging certain substances to intrinsically alter the brain chemistry and biochemistry of the bodies of fish, so altering their modes of behaviours and stimulating far more intensive, repetitive enthusiastic feeding so creating feeding situations where this would simply not have occurred using conventional baits and methods! Revealed in my unique readymade bait and homemade bait carp and catfish bait secrets ebooks is far more powerful information look up my unique website (Baitbigfish) and see my biography below for details of my ebooks deals right now!

There are plenty of online stores that sell inflatable boats nowadays. You have a wide array of choices that sometimes choosing the best one for you is quite a task. In some cases, it is better to source for a used inflatable boat.

How do you choose a used boat? Here is a checklist of the things that you need to inspect when buying a used boat: overall appearance; fabric condition; tube seams; hard-bottom-to-tube seams; bottom seams; transom-to-tube seams; outboard bracket; bottom abrasion inside and outside; valve condition and operation; valve-to-tube seams; oarlocks; floorboards; transom; steering cables; oars and paddles; pump; owner's manual and repair kit.

The list is extensive as it's the same checklist for a new inflatable boat. Make sure that the boat is inflated without the engine, floorboard and other things. Check the fabric of the boat. It is alright for a Hypalon to have a chalky fabric but not on a PVC boat. Check that the boat is not coated with petroleum jelly or oil to make it look good. PVC boat is especially vulnerable to silicone-based protectant such as Armourall.

It is not easy to tell from its looks if a boat is made of PVC or Hypalon. Most manufacturers call their Hyaplon boats "Hypalon" but when PVC is used manufacturers tend to hide them behind some obscure name. A seller might not actually know if Hypalon or PVC is used in his boat as it might have been sold under the name Strongan or Decitex or Sevylor. To check, get acetone or nail polish remover and place a spot on the boat. If the wet area becomes sticky after a few seconds, then the material is PVC. If it is not affected, then it's Hypalon. It is best to test the tube fabric too as some manufacturers make tube fabrics different from the floor and dodgers. It is also almost a certainty that the sport boast is made of PVC when the transom is attached to the hull flange using bolts or screws.

Make sure you check the seams for leaks. You can do this by using water and dishwashing liquid on the seams. If there are bubbles, then there are leaks. Small leaks are fine especially if the boat is a bargain – generally good condition at a very reasonable price.

Check the seams that attach the bottom fabric or fiberglass hull to the tubes. Make sure there are no exaggerated abrasions on the interior and exterior. Check that the transom is not in any danger of separating from the tubes which is especially true in PVC boats.

Air-tight inflation valves should be present in each air chamber. Make sure that the diaphragms inside the valves are intact as these are the check valves that keep the air in the boat. If the boat is old model, you might find it difficult to find replacement diaphragm.

Check that the general condition of the wood- transom, floorboard and oars is sound. Blistered paint or varnish is fine as long as the wood has not deteriorated. Since marine plywood is generally used, you should not have a problem in this area. Check that the oarlocks are in position and not missing.

Check that there's a good manual inflation pump included in the boat. Make sure that the nipple fits for ease in inflating and deflating. Do not forget the windshield, lifelines, dodger, seats and other mechanical equipment. Make sure the owner's manual and repair kit is intact.

Get a second opinion. If you are buying a small boat that does not cost a lot of money, then it is alright to trust your own judgment and buy or junk the boat. However, if you are about to buy a big RIB that costs thousands of dollars, it would be to your advantage to have it looked over by a qualified boat repair person or an authorized service center. A boat survey will give you an unbiased list of the things that you need to do in order to bring the inflatable back to prime condition.

Will the expenses be worth it or will it be better to buy a new one? The decision is yours.

Sport fishing is permitted in Rocky Mountain National Park, a protected area. Fishing activities are balanced with efforts to restore and perpetuate natural aquatic environments and life.

Fishing was popular with early settlers and visitors in the Rocky Mountains. In an attempt to improve the sport, many streams and lakes were stocked with non-native species of trout. Waters with no sport fish were also stocked. The National Park Service stocked non-native Yellowstone cutthroat trout as late as 1969. The only trout native to the park are the greenback cutthroat and the Colorado River cutthroat.

These efforts to enhance recreational opportunities in National Park areas were reconsidered in the 1970's. Since 1975, native greenback cutthroat and Colorado River cutthroat trout are being restored to park waters and exotic or non-native fish are being removed.

Protect Fish and their Habitats

Park fish are vulnerable to several invasive organisms that can be carried on waders and other gear. Please read and follow these guidelines to disinfect your gear before entering park waters and when moving between different lakes and streams.

Today's Fisheries

Populations of at least four species of trout exist in the park: brown, brook, rainbow, and cutthroat. Some suckers also inhabit the streams and lakes. Only 48 of the 156 lakes in the park have reproducing populations of fish. Cold water temperatures and lack of spawning habitat prevent reproduction in high altitude lakes. Supplemental stocking is done only to restore native species. Fishing success at high altitudes varies, even in waters known to contain fish. Restoration of native species requires that the possession limits be managed carefully. See posession limit below for specific regulations. You must be able to identify each species of fish taken.

Licenses & Fees

A valid Colorado fishing license is required for all persons 16 years of age or older to fish in Rocky Mountain National Park. No other permit is necessary; however, special regulations exist. It is your responsibility to know and obey them.

To obtain current Colorado fishing license fees visit the Colorado Division of Wildlife web site.

Method of Capture

Each person shall use only one hand-held rod or line. A 'second rod stamp' is not honored in park waters. Only artificial lures or flies with one (single, double, or treble) hook with a common shank may be used. "Artificial flies or lures" means devices made entirely of, or a combination of, materials such as wood, plastic, glass, hair, metal, feathers, or fiber, designed to attract fish. This does not include: (a) any hand moldable material designed to attract fish by the sense of taste or smell; (b) any device to which scents or smell attractants have been externally applied; (c) molded plastic devices less than one and one-half inch in length; (d) foods; (e) traditional organic baits such as worms, grubs, crickets, leeches, minnows, and fish eggs; and (f) manufactured baits such as imitation fish eggs, dough baits, or stink baits. Fly fishers may utilize a two hook system, where one hook is used as an attractant.

While in possession of any fishing equipment, bait for fishing (insects, fish eggs, minnows, or other organic matter) or worms is prohibited. Children 12 years of age or under, however, may use worms or preserved fish eggs in all park waters open to fishing except those designated as catch-andrelease areas.

No bait or worms are allowed in catch-and-release waters.

Use of lead sinkers (or other lead fishing materials) is strongly discouraged.

Possession Limit

This is general information only. A complete listing of regulations is available at park visitor centers and ranger stations. Possession Limit means the numbers, sizes, or species of fish, fresh or preserved, a person may have. These provisions have parkwide application and are detailed below.

Possession Limit: 8 fish, 6 must be brook Trout

There are several crappie-fishing methods to catch crappie under all types of conditions. I have
included a proven way to help you improve your catch when the fish are shy biting. This method has worked for me when you find the fish under calm water conditions or when they become fussy about biting.

Try this method and see what happens.

Crappie fishing days when they are biting with a shy bite can be overcome sometimes by using this method under the right conditions.

Mr. Mick Thill taught this method to me many years ago when I was an owner of a bait and tackle store. I am sure you are aware of his products. He was often present at tackle buying shows and was willing to provide dealers with information.

Start with a long stemmed float, add your hook, then weight with split shot until only the tip (normally red or yellow or both) is showing above the surface of the water. A very small portion of the float will be visible at this time. I use number six gold hook and various sizes of split shot to obtain the correct balance of the float. Small minnows are always my bait of choice when using this method.

This makes seeing difficult if the conditions are windy or the lake has a heavy chop on it. You will find this works well in calm conditions when fish are not overly aggressive.

The beauty of this arrangement is you can detect a bite if the float goes up or down. You will see the bite when the fish picks up your bait, which removes the resistance of the split shot, and your float goes up.

We all know the answer when it goes down. Right?

I think you will see that this method has it merits and will be thrilled to see a float rising for the first time while using it to catch crappie.

Having this new method of catching crappie may just be the secret you need to catch crappie when they are shy biting to bring home a nice catch of fish for dinner.

I have fished many years and hope that you can enjoy it as much as I have over time. You can join me for comments at www.riverman57.blogspot.com and get my additional crappie fishing methods at www.squidoo.com/crappie-2.
See you there or on the water.
