Remember.. memorize your current vitamin D3 blood level, found when you have a simple hydroxy 25 blood test. The test can be ordered by your physician and should be covered by medical insurance.

If you don’t have medical insurance, go to www.grassrootshealth.net and order your own test on line. You can also become part of a research project that Grassroots Health is currently conducting.

Meanwhile.. begin to get lots of sun (a half hour a day if you live in a southern climate or when it is summer time in your northern climate) Also it is critical to take lots of vitamin D3 supplements until you reach the magic 60-80 ng/ml level.

This rise in your Vitamin D3 blood level can take a few years, esp if you are over 50 and live in a cold northern climate…. where the sun don’t shine much of the time

Also: The importance of knowing your Vitamin D3 level is critical to knowing which level vitamin D3 supplements you need to take, to bring your blood level up to a breast cancer-fighting level – 60/80 ng/ml.

Rule of Thumb: If you are currently below 50 ng/ml.. take 5,000 to 10,000 IUs a day for six months to a year and check your numbers again.

How can a lone woman help stop breast cancer before it starts?

1. MEMORIZE your Vitamin D3 (sunshine vitamin) blood level! The magic number to help stop breast cancer tumors from forming is  60/80 ng/ml.

Don’t assume your doctor knows  the latest research on how vitamin D3 can  stop breast cancer before it starts.

2. EAT low hormone foods EVERY DAY

Think miso soup, tempeh and other fermented organic soy products; Think organic milk (no rBGH) and drink/eat  very little  dairy no matter what; think smart chickens,  fed no hormones or antibiotics .

3. STOP using birth control DRUGS, especially if you are over 40.

All recent research indicates that birth control drugs are  increasing the rate of breast cancers in younger women across the U.S. . Using an  IUD  or having your tubes tied is safer, more effective and less expensive.

Last week , The National Breast Cancer Prevention Project/Know Breast Cancer launched our first Busting Breast Cancer Initiative on Boston’s North Shore, at the gorgeous Rockport Art Association -  donated  for the event.

Massachusetts has the 5th highest breast cancer rate of all 50 states.

Essex County (north of Boston) has the 3rd highest rate in the state.

Since breast cancer is rarely caused by one event or a single long-term toxic exposure, here are some logical possibilities:

1.Essex County is one of the highest income areas in the state.. and more money allows you to hire professional cleaners for your house, car and gardens , probably using toxic chemicals; more money allows you to go to a doctor who may recommend using birth control drugs and HRT drugs for many reasons; more money enables you to have annual mammograms before and after menopause. Research shows that mammograms increase risk of developing breast cancer and do not extend mortality rates.

2. Shallow municipal water sources on North Shore, combining chlorine with twigs and other organic matter, create toxic water for bathing and drinking.

3. The cold climate,   October through May,  with weak sunshine over these eight months keeps average vitamin D3 blood levels low.

In the December 15, 2010 issue of Cancer Research, scientists say they can now definitively show that an inflammatory process within the breast itself can promote the growth of stem cells responsible for tumor development.

So, how can we  prevent and/ or reduce  this inflammation which can lead to breast cancer?

1. Eat a plant based diet (lots of fruits & vegetables) Eat no-hormone meats,  and seafood such as wild salmon as side dishes only. Add lots of whole grains and limit sugar; limit your non-fermented dairy (milk, butter, ice cream)… watch yourself  lose that  excess body fat!

2. Add EFA’s (essential fatty acids) to your diet. These include Omega 3, which is not as easily found in our diets. (try  a fish oil or flaxseed oil supplement).  A nice listing of many  EFA’s foods can be found on the WomentoWomen website here…..oh….and lose excess body fat.

3. Avoid certain foods known to cause inflammation such as hydrogenated oils, sugar, caffeine, gluten and processed foods, just to name a few……..and lose your excess body fat.

4. Exercise Regularly…and get rid of your excess body fat.

5. Get plenty of sleep. (Aww, don’t we all wish to have a good night’s sleep – the almighty elixir?)………and that will help you lose your excess body fat.

Last summer Big Pharma sponsored a Vitamin D3 report by experts, most of whom currently received significant income from pharmaceutical companies, that ignored twenty years of solid research on the many benefits enjoyed by Americans taking much much higher levels of vitamin D3. Using the Institute of Medicine, a pharmaceutical-industry funded organization, the July 2010 report urged Americans to limit their intake of Vitamin D3 to 1,000 IUs or less per day.

Now someone is paying big bucks to publicize a small mouse study out of Georgetown University Hospital, that mentions how high levels of vitamin D3… although clearly helpful in stopping most types of breast cancer, was not helpful for skinny mice who were “pre-destined” to develop one type of estrogen negative breast cancer. This.. after feeding the poor mice 15,000 IUs or more of vitamin D3 a day!

It will be important to see what leading Vitamin D3 researcher at University of California’s Moores Cancer Center or their education organization Grassroots Health, or the Vitamin D Council, or researchers at Sunlight, Nutrition and Health Research or the well-respected Vitamin D researcher, Dr Michael Holick, at Boston University has to say about this latest publicity effort to limit Americans’ intake of this inexpensive food supplement that can help stop breast and colon cancer and many other conditions before they start. Remember… as more and more Americans use adequate levels of inexpensive Vitamin D3 supplements to protect ourselves from breast and colon cancers, the pharmaceutical companies lose billions of dollars each year in chemotherapy sales.

Those are two silly things to do if you are trying to follow a better-safe-than-sorry lifestyle. …. it’s just that all of these bits and pieces of chemical estrogens that shed off of your plastic containers add up….
Then .. poof you are the 1 in 5 woman in Massachusetts or the 1 in 8 woman in North Carolina or Iowa who ends up with a diagnosis of invasive breast cancer.

“Why me?” you ask.

Not any one single thing is going to give you breast cancer. Research tells us it is that cocktail effect that can catch up with us , if we don’t watch out… or even if we do.

• A hard hit spray of DDT when you were 14

Gloucester artist, Charles Movalli, has donated a 20″ x 24″ framed oil painting of Gloucester Harbor to benefit the work of the National Breast Cancer Prevention Project.

His gift is donated in memory of the beloved Gloucester artist, Carlene Muniz, who died from complications of breast cancer in 2009 at the age of 61.

On display at ClubXcel in Manchester, MA, until March 7th, at Alexander Westerhoff Antiques in Essex from March 9-16, the Wenham Tea House March 17-23 and Debora Lunt Studio from March 23-29, the painting, valued at $5,000, will be the grand prize in Know Breast Cancer’s March Madness Raffle. In Massachusetts, younger women (under 50), saw a 45% increase in invasive breast cancer between 1995-2007; younger women in Colorado saw a 27% increase between 1990-2008, and younger women in Florida saw a 40% increase between 1984-2008.

The American Cancer Society’s February, 2011 report doesn’t count the actual number of women diagnosed in each state; instead, it uses an estimate, based on a formula, based on 9% of the U.S. population.

To know the real story, we need to count every woman who is affected, and we need to have those numbers published for all of us to see and understand.

Contact you state cancer board and ask them how many younger women developed invasive breast cancers last year, compared to the past five or ten years. Also ask them, how many of these younger women were diagnosed with triple negative, HER2+ and estrogen receptor positive breast cancers.

We need this specific information, not estimates. Keeping women in the dark when it comes to these critical numbers, makes it impossible to measure any positive changes, as women try easy and healthy ways to stop breast cancer before it starts.

This sharp increase in triple negative, HER2 positive and estrogen/progesterone positive invasive breast cancers probably means that younger women are absorbing higher levels of chemical and animal hormones, hormone disruptors and/or are getting zapped with ionizing radiation while in the womb and/or during their infancy, childhood, teen and/or younger adult years.

Some laboratory tests have shown that bisphenol A or BPA, a chemical hormone disruptor, used to make baby bottles soft and pliable, can  leach into the milk when the bottles are heated.  Absorbing enough BPA over time can sometimes cause cell mutation, often a  first step in the development of breast cancer or other adverse biological changes in infants.  Based on these studies, Canada banned the use of BPA in baby bottles beginning in 2011 and the European Union will ban the sale and import of these same bottles in 2011.  “Better to be safe than sorry” is the motive behind these  new  prevention laws.

Unfortunately, the U.S. government has not yet banned the sale of BPA in baby bottles. Just last week, after being pressured by the chemical industry lobby, GOP Senate leaders again refused to allow a vote that would have banned BPA from baby bottles.

What causes breast cancer?

Breast cancer only seems to happen when an individual absorbs a personalized cocktail of radiation, chemical hormones, animal hormones and/or hormone disruptors from a variety of sources, over a period of years. But often, the younger you are when you are hit by any of these toxic events, the stronger their impact.

Not using baby bottles containing BPA is probably one easy, healthy and important way that women can help protect their daughters and granddaughters from developing breast cancer later in their lives.
