This week, my brother (Gavin) & I (Noah) decided to give all you lovely TV Ark listeners a Special Bonus Episode, of sorts. TV:

Queer Eye: Season 3 (2019)

Released: March 15, 2019

I cannot stress highly enough how good this show is. As reality shows go, QE is the best of the best as they give us a chance to learn about other individuals and realize the importance of belonging and joy. This season seems to have a heavier emphasis on the personal stories of each of the nominated participants which leads to better storytelling and a greater emotional impact. 9.5 out of 10.

West Wing: Season 1 (1999-2000) - Throwback Review

Released: September 22, 1999

Aaron Sorkin is a master of his craft and West Wing is a wonderful example of what it looks like when a writer is firing on all cylinders. Strong character development and fast based dialogue give us a solid foundation for what will prove to be one of the best shows ever written. With all that in mind, each well-written character is given life by a top-notch troop of performers that put us right in the center of all of the chaos. 8 out of 10.

Movies:

Paddleton (2019)

Released: February 22, 2019

Well, I wasn’t prepared mentally for this heartbreakingly beautiful movie about love and friendship. Ray Romano and Mark Duplass were absolutely brilliant, in this raw and emotional tale. These stellar but subtle performances leave us with a perfect balance of humor and heartbreak that leaves Paddleton in the upper echelon of 2019, thus far. 9 out of 10

Captain Marvel (2019)

Released: March 8, 2019

It is a real shame that so many people have taken to review bombing the latest outing from Marvel because Captain Marvel is a fun treat for audiences willing to give it a shot. Brie Larson shows us her quick wit and star power as we see her transformation into an action star. Though the latest addition to the MCU has some flaws, specifically in the 3rd act during a CGI infused action sequence against an entire space fleet; CM wins you over with nostalgic easter eggs, solid action stretches, and some well-placed banter. As it compares to the rest of the MCU, it will likely find itself in the middle of the pack but it might have one of the greatest supporting performances in the franchise with Ben Mendelsohn. 7 out of 10.

To Believe by The Cinematic Orchestra

Released: March 15, 2019

To Believe opens beautifully with its titular track and it’s easy to get lost in the ambient sounds; but if you give it an isolated/engaged listen, you’ll be pleased by what this British duo has given us on their 4th full-length. Tracks are wonderfully composed even though stretches of the album can feel a bit to samey. And, although well produced, this LP will regrettably find itself categorized as ‘really solid but somewhat forgettable’ due to the ease with which it can fade into the background. 6 out of 10.

Panorama by La Dispute

Released: March 22, 2019

The latest effort from the quintet from Grand Rapids is not just an album but a brilliant composition told over 10 beautiful movements and is the equivalent (imho) to the post-hardcore version of Tchaikovsky. Every beautifully spoken syllable is placed into a wall of sound that encapsulates the human experience like an audible mosaic.  With every listen the emotional resonance grows as distorted riffs bounce back and forth from a subtle whisper to a bombastic scream. Blend all of that with a staggering rhythm section, poignant lyricism and you have one of the strongest rock albums in recent memory. Panorama is a masterpiece. 10 out of 10.

TV:

True Detective Season 3 (2019)

After a long wait, we get another season of True Detective and it flat out delivers. A decent plot is elevated by an impeccable ensemble, specifically the performances from Ali and Dorff. The season is a slow burn and has its peaks and valleys but ultimately Season 3 is a welcome addition to the series. 8 out of 10.

The Umbrella Academy (2019)

The Umbrella Academy is outlandish, wacky, hilarious, and unbelievably charming. Gerard Way’s comic makes its way to the TV screen and does so in spectacular fashion. The music cues are fantastic and help to perfectly balance the action with emotional character threads culminating with an impressive finale. Klaus and Number 5 are the stars of the show but everyone brings something unique to the table which is one of the many reasons that this show works so well. 10 out of 10

Movies:

Behind the Curve (2018)

This documentary centers around the world of flat-earthers and gives us insight into their belief system. Though you can’t dispute science, what you can do is figure out how these individuals arrived at their destination. What starts as a documentary about Flat-Earth, really becomes more about how we let people get to the point of disputing the indisputable and what we can do to fix it. 7 out of 10

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)

Though this film lacks the emotional punch of the first two installments of this trilogy, The Hidden World still puts a nice little bow onto the film franchise that the kids will enjoy. You will still find some laughs but ultimately this film is the weakest of three with less character development and less depth than it’s predecessors. 6 out of 10

Leaving Neverland (2019)

Leaving Neverland is a brutally uncomfortable watch as we get two accounts of child grooming and sexual abuse. The depictions are graphic, heartbreaking, and gutwrenching as the documentary gives these victims a chance to speak out and share their stories of survival as they search for closure.  8 out of 10

(Knowledge is incredibly important in preventing child sexual abuse. Please look into organizations like Darkness to Light to gain education and training in how you can help prevent future instances of abuse.)

Another week, another set of Reviews! Lots of TV was watched this week. I also didn’t hit my gym goal for the week and I wonder if those are correlated?

TV:

Real Bros of Simi Valley - Season 2

A little more budget and a longer form adds a nice boost to the quality of RBOSM in the second season. The show still manages to stay engaging in its 2nd season, coming back with even more wit and charm. We also get a bit more character development to see which players really make the show work. If you like the first season, you’ll enjoy kicking back and watching the follow up as it plays out being more of the same.  8 out of 10

The Dragon Prince - Season 1

From the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender, we get The Dragon Prince. This kid-friendly cartoon is layered with a simple story for the kids while layered well with clever pop culture references and thoughtful content for the adults. The animation looks great and the band of misfits that you follow are enjoyable and easily hold your attention through ten 22-minute episodes. 7.5 out of 10

The Dragon Prince - Season 2

Everything that The Dragon Prince does well in the first season, they expand upon in the follow-up. Expect your heartstrings to be pulled and for deeper concepts to be explored as we continue with our heroes on their journey. I found myself more invested this time around and I am truly excited to see what happens in the future for this show. 9 out of 10

Lorena

The Amazon Prime docuseries on Lorena Bobbitt gives us a pretty in-depth look into each case surrounding the infamous evening and even dives into what happens after. The show is informative and is watchable from start to finish. There is nothing truly groundbreaking about series and I am not a fan of generic replacements to make up for footage that doesn’t exist but when all is said it done, its a fine watch. 6.5 out of 10

Movie:

Abducted in Plain Sight (2017)

For its style and delivery, it’s fine. Nothing groundbreaking in the way that this was shot and edited but the content is absolutely mind-blowing. Viewers will likely find themselves yelling at the television and face-palming themselves as the parents retell the story of their daughter's kidnapping. 6.5 out of 10

A Star is Born (2018)

A Star is Born hits all the beats that it needs to and I completely understand why people love it. There are moments that down right gave me chills, specifically, pretty much anytime Gaga performs; and Sam Elliott speaks volumes in a brief but incredibly strong turn as Cooper’s brother. For all the good, there are still some flaws, mainly in some awkward chemistry moments between Cooper and Gaga where they struggled to find the emotional chords that they were looking for. Still a rock solid movie. 8 out of 10

Music:

Head Above Water by Avril Lavigne

Released February 15th

Avril is back with an album that seems to have trouble deciding what it wants to be. Track to Track, it feels very disjointed and is overproduced. There are moments where you feel the emotional resonance that was put into certain songs but the production reeks of trying to play to a mass audience. Head Above Water has moments of catchy hooks but mostly struggles to find the powerful voice that it was searching for. 4 out of 10.

The Real Bros of Simi Valley: Season 1

Call it TV with the 2nd season currently airing on Facebook Watch, but Season 1 can all be streamed in under an hour on YouTube. Simi Valley is a beautiful parody of reality television that follows 4 young professional bros just trying to find themselves. This show is ridiculous, clever, and perfect way to spend 45 minutes. 9 out of 10

Russian Doll: Season 1

Released: February 1, 2019

Nasha Lyonne and Leslye Headland give us a real treat to kick off February. Lyonne is phenomenal as the cynical woman who can’t seem to stay alive and she is surrounded by a wonderfully absurd ensemble. This show is dark, twisted, and hilarious with a brilliant story arc. 9 out of 10

Music:

Quiet Signs by Jessica Pratt

Released: February 8, 2019

Quiet Signs is eerie and somber with hopeful tones that are brought forth over a simple structure. Pratt’s style most resembles the singer-songwriter vibe of the late ’60s and early 70’s and it’s not unpleasant but even at only a 27-minute runtime, Quiet Signs is a real chore to get through. 5 out of 10

Tracks to enjoy: “Poly Blue” & “This Time Around”

AJ Tracey by AJ Tracey

Released: February 8, 2019

A lack of vulnerability in the lyricism is the downfall of this effort from the UK Hip Hop artist. Euro-dance beats and generic rhythms blend together to create a forgettable album with absolutely no heart. This album is all fluff about “poppin’ bottles” & “Diamonds on my neck” and has no substance that gives you any insight to what makes AJ Tracey special.  3 out of 10

Tracks to enjoy: “Psych Out!” & “Country Star”

Can’t Say I Ain’t Country by Florida Georgia Line

Released: February 15, 2019

The latest release from Florida Georgia Line is a tough listen, to say the least. Generic pandering is put in place of genuine storytelling and they play it safe musically, with formulaic song structures and mundane instrumentation. This album is void of any redeeming qualities. 2 out of 10.

Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes

Released: January 24, 2019

Netflix drops on us this Ted Bundy documentary and after its four episodes, I found myself wanting more; but not in a good way. The content is interesting but I would have preferred a deeper and more detailed dive into this utterly insane story. If this would have been an 8 episode run with more time spent on all of the events that took place, I believe it would have left us with a more engaging plot arc to follow. With all that in mind, it’s still a decent docuseries that’s worth watching but when compared to other true-crime shows, doesn’t quite match up. 6 out of 10

Smells Funny by Hedvig Mollestad Trio

HMT delivers a short LP that doesn’t hold punches, sending us a prog-rock letter in a jazz combo envelope while wonderfully blending infectious baseline grooves and creative solo structures. Each member is clearly talented but the way they mesh together is the real highlight. 8 out of 10

Feral Roots by Rival Sons

What we have here is good ole’ fashion southern style rock n roll. Rival Sons have some pretty solid moments in instrumentation, specifically in their percussion and guitar work. Unfortunately, this is offset at times with generic riffs and lyrics that come together like a mad-lib of cliche rock sentiments. The titular track is absolutely brilliant but this album is severely unbalanced in terms of quality. 5.5 out of 10

What Chaos is Imaginary by Girlpool

Released: February 1, 2019

Damn, this is just a genuinely pleasant album. This LA-based duo gives you something a little bit different with every track which means most people will find something that they will enjoy over the course of this album. WCII ebbs and flows from distorted indie-rock to folk driven lullabies, then wrap this present up with a bow of harmonies and acoustic guitar and you got yourself a pretty solid gift. 7.5 out of 10

There is no denying that what Ariana does, she does well. There is nothing earth-shattering about this album. Generic pop fills and standard R&B samples fill Grande’s latest outing from start to finish, but I’ll be damned if you don’t find yourself nodding your head and tapping your toes. 7 out of 10

The TV Ark LIVES!!! 2017 was a return to form of sorts for Matt and Trey after Season 20 (which went a bit off the rails with its sometimes convoluted continuity). Season 21 retained what worked about the previous season (PC Principal , Cartman's new girlfriend) but managed to stay away from the slavishness to the Trump of it all. From Kaepernick to Weinstein and every controversy in between, Season 21 delivered a few New Instant Classics ("Sons A Witches" , "Super Hard PCness"); and it reminded everyone that South Park is still the most consistently hilarious and insightful comedy on television. NB

9. Vice Principals S2 (HBO): 

The latest Hill/McBride collaboration went out with a bang with its second and final season. The darkly entertaining tale of rival Vice Principals turned unlikely / untrusting allies may have not been for everyone; but for those who like their comedy with a heavy dose of cringe, nothing topped it this year. McBride was reliably awesome (playing a bit against type) but it was Walton Goggins as Lee Russell who truly steals the show. If you missed this one in its initial run, do yourself a favor and catch up! NB

8. Lady Dynamite S2 (Netflix):

This gem, created by Mitchell Hurwitz (Arrested Development) and former South Park Producer Pam Brady, caught us completely off guard. The brilliant and uniquely talented Maria Bamford takes you inside her wonderfully weird brain to deliver one of the most original comedies in recent years. Lady Dynamite is brimming with genius comic performances (Fred Melamed, Mary Kay Place, Mo Collins, just to name a few) sharp writing, fantastic editing, and above all else a true beating heart anchored by Bamford and the wonderful Olafur Olafsson as Scott. Unfortunately, it looks like Season 2 may also end up serving as the final season of the show; but regardless, take the time to catch up with this one. NB

7. American Gods S1 (STARZ):

American Gods is imaginative, engaging, and insanely weird. The concept and story, based off the novel of the same name, takes ancient mythology and merges it with a modern world. It has an incredibly strong cast and is one of the most visually stunning things on television right now. The series was renewed after only two episodes but the future of the series doesn’t look so bright after showrunner, Bryan Fuller, exits. Regardless, the first season is worth the watch. SM

6. Fargo S3 (FX):

Noah Hawley continues his odyssey through the Coen's-verse and in the process delivers his best season yet! Fargo Season 3 is an absolute blast filled with standout performances from Ewan McGregor (as both Ray & Emmit Stussy) Michael Stuhlbarg (one of many Coen favorites that graces the season) and David Thewlis as Varga (one of the most deliciously despicable villians in recent memory). While its seemingly only loosely connected to the events of Seasons 1 & 2, Season 3 adds a lot to the growing Fargo mythos; and even if this ends up being it for the foreseeable future, fans who start playing catch-up now will find a rich web of consistent themes and narrative threads that have created one of the most unique and rewarding shows of TV's New Golden Age. NB    

5. The Deuce S1 (HBO):

In some circles, the arrival of a new David Simon show is anticipated with as much fervor as the latest Marvel movie; and if you know where we can find such a circle, please email : thearkofe@gmail.com. This is a very simple and honest PSA : DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS SHOW! Simon and longtime collaborator George Pelecanos have delivered another masterclass in narrative storytelling, and we're only 1 season in. This mosaic of 1970s New York is propelled by one of the finest ensemble casts ever assembled. Season 1 standouts include: a heartbreakingly vulnerable and alternatively tough as nails Maggie Gyllenhaal as Candy, and the seductive and charismatic menace of Gary Carr's C.C. and Method Man's Rodney. The Deuce does not shy away from its subject matter; but, like every Simon project, it treats it with honesty and intelligence at every turn. NB

4. American Vandal S1 (Netflix):

American Vandal is arguably the smartest and dumbest show to grace our streaming services. This show acts as a perfect parody to the true-crime genre that has flooded our entertainment outlets in the past few years. The content is intentionally juvenile but done with such craft that it is a must watch! SM

3. The Leftovers S3 (HBO):

This season showed us some of the best performances on television in 2017. Each episode of the final chapter is engaging and leaves the viewers with a lot to chew on. I was always lukewarm on earlier seasons but this season has made me want to give the series another chance. SM

The Leftovers Final Season cemented it as one of my favorite television shows of all time. Not since Six Feet Under (still my undisputed Favorite Show) have I encountered a series with such stark emotional power. Lindelof and Perrotta absolutely stuck the landing, and the phenomenal cast, anchored by career best work from Justin Theroux and Carrie Coon, blew me away. Too many people checked out of this show, and admittedly it's a tough sell and not for everyone; but I implore you, GO WATCH THIS SHOW! NB  

2. Dear White People S1 (Netflix):

Few shows decide to carry the mantle in pushing the American people forward in the way that Dear White People does. The shows pulled early criticism from the public that viewed it as an attack towards white individuals; however I believe that its narrative and unforgettable imagery act as, not an attack, but a window that allows viewers to gain insight and to hopefully enact change. The show is top notch. SM

1. Twin Peaks: The Return "S3" (Showtime): 

Twin Peaks: The Return is simply beautiful. It is a dark and twisted ride through the mind of David Lynch and his uncomprimised vision. SM

Simply put, Twin Peaks: The Return was my favorite piece of entertainment from 2017. It's a miracle of a season as far as I'm concerned and I still can't quite believe it exists. It was a long, wonderful, and strange trip indeed, but one I can't wait to take again. And I also must shout out my personal Best Actor of 2017 : Kyle MacLachlan, for his tour de force as not 1, not 2, but arguably 4 wholly unique characters (is that a spoiler, I'm not even sure if that's possible with this show?). Put even more simply, Twin Peaks: The Return is Damn Fine Television! NB

19. The Waldo Moment (Season 2 Episode 3)

Some might argue that there are no bad episodes of Black Mirror and I have to say that I don’t necessarily agree. The Waldo Moment follows a failed comedian who voices a cartoon bear and gets mixed up in politics when becoming a candidate for a local election. When everything finishes viewers are left with a melancholy feeling and an allegory that wasn’t very subtle or clever. It overall isn’t worth your time and doesn’t meet the standards set by other episodes throughout the series.  

18. Crocodile (Season 4 Episode 3)

An insurance agent gets more than she bargains for when her device to access her clients memories leads down a dangerous path. Unfortunately, this episode lacks innovation in it’s delivery and isn’t engaging enough for viewers to really care. The episode drags throughout its runtime and the normal observer will have to suspend their disbelief to make the plot into something worth buying.

17. Metalhead (Season 4 Episode 5)

In this post-apocalyptic world, a group of people run from a pack of electronic and deadly “dogs”. Metalhead is a solid example of visual storytelling but lacks the depth and the performance that is necessary to pull off this sub-genre. The episode never really reaches its full potential to make you care for those involved but there is a fair bit of action for those that enjoy little character development and heads blowing up.

16. Archangel (Season 4 Episode 2)

A scared mother, after losing her daughter one day at the park, finds herself using a new tracking technology to make sure her daughter is always safe. That being said, we know that in a Black Mirror episode, things rarely work out as well as planned. Rosemarie DeWitt gives a powerful performance but the episode doesn’t live up to what it could have been. It ends up being predictable, flat, and the relationship between the mom and daughter isn’t developed in a strong enough manner for us to really care about the outcome.

15. Men Against Fire (Season 3 Episode 5)

Soldiers must go from town to town protecting villagers from vile mutants called “Roaches”, but not everything is as it seems. Malachi Kirby and Madeline Brewer lead the way in this action adventure story and though they do a solid job, overall the episode is incredibly bland and forgettable for one so action filled.

14. Hated in the Nation (Season 3 Episode 6)

Two cops must quickly identify and solve a series of murders with a hidden link to social media. This episode paces itself well and buys its entire 89 minute runtime with no problem. It’s engaging and starts with a bang but when the smoke settles viewers will realize that they watched an enjoyable episode that doesn’t much have an effect after the credits roll.

13. Nosedive (Season 3 Episode 1)

A girl who wants to improve her score on social media makes it big when she gets invited to the wedding of the season, but events don’t go on as planned. The greatness of Black Mirror often lies in the subtlety of it’s messaging. This episode throws that out the window as there is no hidden meaning here. Either way, Bryce Dallas Howard is strong as the lead in this episode and helps to cover for where the episode lacks

12. Be Right Back (Season 2 Episode 1)

After a widow discovers a company that allows you to stay in contact with the deceased, she decides to communicate with her late lover. Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter from the Marvel Movies) and Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, About Time) give excellent portrayals of these characters as they take you through the grieving process. It’s a strong outing from the Black Mirror crew but doesn’t pack the emotional punch that other episodes give you.

11. Hang the DJ (Season 4 Episode 4)

A dating program pairs up couples but gives an expiration date to all relationships, but two participants quickly start to question the process. This episode seems to be a fan favorite of the 4th season, mainly due to the fact that it doesn’t kick the shit out of you. Here we have a nice little rom-com in the Black Mirror universe and it seems to be relatable for a society that has so quickly clinged to dating apps. We get two characters that are enjoyable to watch and a story that seems heartfelt but after all is said in done, viewers will find themselves saying, “That was nice” and nothing else.

10. Playtest (Season 3 Episode 2)

An American traveler needs some extra cash to make his way back home. He signs up as a trial participant for a new gaming system but soon can’t tell what’s a part of the game and what’s reality. Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) directs this specific Black Mirror endeavor and it turns out well. This episode plays with more cheap jump scares but that doesn’t take away from the emotional fear you feel throughout this tense episode and the 3rd act flat out delivers.

9.  Fifteen Million Merits (Season 1 Episode 2)

In this episode, people are treated like slaves as they ride bikes to create energy. As they ride, they earn merits that they can use to pay for junk food, avoiding ads, or to get the chance to obtain stardom through a reality tv show. As one friend helps another to get onto the show, they realize that maybe they aren’t getting what they bargained for. Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) puts on an incredible performance in this heart wrenching episode that is guaranteed to pull strong emotions from the viewer. The ending is likely to have a polarizing effect but whether you enjoy the resolution, the conflict throughout the story helps to create an incredibly powerful episode.

8. San Junipero (Season 3 Episode 4)

Here is another episode that seems to be a fan favorite because it’s one of the few episodes that has anything close to resembling a pleasant ending. 2 girls meet in this seaside town and strike up a relationship that defies time. An incredible set design mixed with strong performances and a script that does a phenomenal job of bringing out the humanity in its characters helps this episode soar. It’s poignant, beautiful, and viewers will find themselves falling in love with everything they have just watched.

7. The National Anthem (Season 1 Episode 1)

If you are looking for a great place to start, Season 1 Episode 1 is a wonderful episode to give you a good feel of whether or not Black Mirror is for you. In this episode, the Prime Minister must make a life changing decision when it is discovered that a member of the royal family has been kidnapped. The story is darkly comedic and seems horrifically real. The line is quickly drawn in the sand and viewers will either buy in and get engaged or decide that that the content is too much to handle and opt out. The performances are strong and if you can stomach this episode we think you will enjoy how the rest of the series plays out.

6. USS Callister (Season 4 Episode 1)

With arguably the most recognizable ensemble we’ve seen in a Black Mirror episode, Season 4 starts off an an incredibly high note. While creating a video game, a lonesome coder creates a world of his own in an offsite prototype of his companies newest product. Though things seem happy-go-lucky at first, a darker side of this universe quickly emerges. Black Mirror does a phenomenal job of fending off standard sci-fi tropes and creating a visually stunning environment to watch these characters play. This episode is guaranteed to have viewers feel a multitude of emotions and delivers an ending that is strong and memorable. We also get a nice little cameo from Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad.)

5. Shut Up and Dance (Season 3 Episode 3)

Kenny gets caught in an online trap and is left to the mercy of his anonymous blackmailer. This one hits hard as it makes you feel for the characters and hiding you from the vicious truth surrounding it all. Add in a killer score and a finale that comes out of nowhere and you have yourself one of the strongest, most gut wrenching episodes of Black Mirror to date.

4. White Bear (Season 2 Episode 2)

A woman wakes up with no idea where she is and soon finds herself running for her life, while everyone else watches. The tension is perfectly balanced from start to finish as the viewer follows along, just as confused as the main character. Finally, when the reveal takes place, viewers are left with a phenomenal episode with a strong social commentary.

3. The Entire History of You (Season 1 Episode 3)

It is the norm in this society for people to have an implant that allows them play back anything that they have seen before. When a husband is skeptical of the faithfulness of his wife, he uses this technology to help him get to the bottom of things. This story is utterly heartbreaking and the performances are as compelling as they have ever been on this show. Everything feels so real as you can’t tear away from watching all the events unfold and at the end of it all you are left with your jaw on the floor.

2. White Christmas (Season 2 Episode 4)

Two men are stuck in an outpost at Christmas and share their stories of how technology can run a little haywire. Jon Hamm leads the way in this episode telling two of the three vignettes. These stories intertwine beautifully and lead to a heartbreaking finale that is astounding. It’s dark, creepy, and incredibly original with strong imagery and masterclass performances. The episode paces itself well and gives us a 73 minute runtime that you can’t turn away from. This is an episode you cannot miss!

1. Black Museum (Season 4 Episode 6)

This episode is a perfect culmination of the Black Mirror series. This episode follows a woman who wanders into “Black Museum” where the proprietor tells stories relating to all the artifacts. The stories in this episode will have viewers feeling all sorts of emotions and hit you with a 3rd act that might be the best that Black Mirror has ever been. The imagery used throughout the episode is remarkable and the story is one that could be dissected by film classes for semesters to come. Black Museum can stand alone without the rest of the series and offers a profound reflection on death and confronting grief. It’s the best Black Mirror has ever been.

A sport known for bringing strangers together and ripping families and friends apart. Football represents the American Dream. A dream that says if you work hard and do your best, and sacrifice your mind and body, you too can make millions.  Though many television shows have documented the sport well, one show stands above the rest when accurately depicting the average American’s response to such a turbulent time as football season. 10. The Light of Genesis (Season 3 Ep. 10)  - Aired 12/08/2011

In this wonderful episode Kevin believes that his Krav Maga instructor is hitting on him and Ruxin joins a cult to get fantasy football advice. Throw in some cameos from Thomas Middleditch, TJ Miller (Silicon Valley), and Eliza Dushku (Buffy and The New Guy), and you have yourself a great episode.

9. The Lockout (Season 3 Ep 1) - Aired 10/06/2011

The draft episodes are some of the most fun to watch. As Season 3 kicks off, we get to see Andre having to deal with all the punishments that come along with winning the Sacko and the rest of the crew has to deal with the draft party which goes awry.

8. Vegas Draft (Season 2, Ep. 1) - 09/16/2010

Another draft episode? Like I said, they were some of the best. The gang heads to Vegas to draft in style. Chad “OchoCinco” Johnson acts as the master of ceremonies and we get introduced to Rafi for the first time and that is the gift that just keeps on giving.

7. The Kluneberg (Season 2, Ep. 4) - 10/07/2010

The gang’s old friend, who is a sex addict, starts a new league and invites Jenny. Andre buys a brand new painting and everyone else tries to kick Rafi out of The League. Once you throw in Taco getting addicted to cocaine via a toilet seat, you have a recipe for success and hilarity.

6. The Breastalyzer (Season 4. Ep.4) - Aired 11/01/2012

Kevin and Jenny discover that Kristin Cavallari is in their baby class and Ruxin ask Rafi if he can take Baby Geoffrey to swim lessons. Neither situations work out well for those involved but it definitely works out for the viewers as we are given plenty of great Rafi moments.

5. The Expert Witness (Season 2 Ep 9) - Aired 11/11/2010

If we learn anything in this episode it's that Andre is useless under pressure. We also get some comedy gold as the entire crew finds their way into one of Ruxin’s court case.

4. High School Reunion (Season 2 Ep 10) - Aired 11/18/2010

The guys need a name for their last place trophy and what better place for inspiration than their high school reunion? This is also the episode where Taco also looks for inspiration while trying to finish his Vinegar Strokes Masterpiece.

3. Thanksgiving (Season 3 Ep.8) - Aired 11/17/2011

Thanksgiving is a time for family. That being said, most of the gang wishes their out-of-town family members would have just stayed home. A great episode made even better by guest appearances from Sarah Silverman and Jeff Goldblum.

2. Mr. McGibblets (Season 1, Ep. 4) - Aired 11/19/2009

Pete and Andre head off on a romantic getaway for two and Kevin pays Taco to scare his daughter so she stops playing with a dancing toy. It leads to Kevin getting robbed by his own brother and puts Pete in a curious situation. This episode also probably gives you the best summarization of the character dynamics that last throughout the series.

1. Kagel The Elf (Season 2. Ep 12) - Aired 12/9/2010

It’s the holiday season and Kevin and Jenny are both in the playoffs, but will Ellie’s poor behavior and the fact that Pete is dating her teacher, deter their focus? Will a Christmas miracle lead to Kevin’s first appearance in the Shiva Bowl? It has some of the best one-liners and the best ending that this show ever produced, making it the clear #1.

10. Theon will stop The Golden Company from entering Westeros (Via Reddit: sbourwest)

While everyone else is gearing up for a war with the undead, Theon is going on a little side quest. The theory states that he will stop the fleet, gain redemption, possibly die in the process, but thwart Cersei’s plan. Hey it could happen.

9. Jaime will kill Cersei  (Via GamesRadar)

Here is what we know. Cersei will be killed by her “Valonqar” or little brother, at least based on the prophecy from Maggy the Frog  from Cersei’s childhood. Jaime has seen Daenerys' dragons first-hand, he knows Cersei won't win in open battle, and he's clearly not happy with the direction the kingdom and his family are taking. The article goes into it much further but it’s a definite possibility.

8. Bran was the reason the Mad King went mad (Via Chicago Tribune)

It is a definite possibility that Bran went back in time to try and warn King Aerys Targaryen II about the White Walkers, but things get a little lost in translation and the Mad King goes, well, mad.

7.  Varys is actually a merman (Via Nerdist,)

According to Nerdist, what Varys wants is simple: He is a merman and he wants to free his fellow merpeople. You heard that right. And not just any merman, but a member of the 'merlings' species, which exist in A Song of Ice and Fire. But why back Dany? Easy, dragons melt Ice, creating rising water above westeros, making a better world for...that’s right…. Merlings!

6. Game of Thrones is all about Climate Change (Via THRILLIST)

THRILLIST backs up their claim in the linked article but to simplify it to it’s core, the characters of GoT have all been playing politics but refuse to see the more ominous threat that is always there and if they don’t deal with it, it will lead to the death of humanity.  

5.  Bran the Builder/Bran the Destroyer (via Reddit user ntwiles)

This one pulls from several different theories but the main gist is that The White Walkers make it to the south and Bran wargs into a dragon to end the war. Through this process several main characters die but in the end Westeros is built by Bran and destroyed by Bran.

4. The Hound saw a vision of The Mountain’s death as kids (Via Chicago Tribune)

The theory goes like this. The Hound had a vision of the Mountain’s death by fire, possibly caused by the Hound. This led The Mountain to burn his face. Does this point to a possibility of a CleganeBowl in Season 8? We hope it does!

3. Game of Thrones is a story being told by Sam (via CheatSheet)

This one comes straight from a Game of Thrones actor, posited by John Bradley, who’s played Samwell Tarly since Season 1 of the show. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bradley notes that the presence of the gyroscopes from the GoT intro in the library of the maesters is far from a coincidence.

“I think it could mean any number of things. One theory is that what we’re seeing now and how we’re experiencing Game of Thrones is Sam telling the story of Game of Thrones. If you take the logic of the story now, the story of Westeros and the story of the battle for the Iron Throne, it would be a book in that library. The visual motif of that is you’re about to be told a story — the sense of an idea of being told a story, and people gaining that knowledge, the way Sam is absorbing knowledge in the library.”

This carries a handful of implications for the Game of Thrones endgame. First off, the story would carry a distinct bias based on what Sam heard and saw himself. Second, it would be generally biased toward Jon, Sam’s best friend and closest confidante. And finally, it could hint at one of two outcomes: Sam telling it to a group gathered around a campfire in the aftermath of a White Walker takeover, or to a classroom in Old Town years following a happy ending.

A side note: Wouldn’t it be cool if GRRM played an elderly Sam at the end of this?

2. Cersei will become the Night Queen (via Reddit User ZaroXen)

ZaroXen is not the first place I’ve seen this theory but it goes like this. At some point Cersei will die, be raised from the dead by the Night King and eventually killed by Jaime, making him Azor Ahai. Jaime’s child survives but is a White Walker so he exiles himself to the North to raise the child and the story starts over again. The end might be a little much but I am on board that Cersei could become the Night Queen.

1. Tyrion has Betrayed Dany and partnered with Cersei (Via Reddit User Ndotny)

The thread leads to some interesting conclusions, but Ndotny is not the first to think that Tyrion could be playing the other side, but after seeing the last episode, it is definitely possible. We don’t see the happenings of the secret meeting, Cersei calls Jaime “the dumbest Lannister” for not agreeing with her reasons to lie to Dany (possibly hinting that Tyrion does agree), we’ve seen Tyrion realize that maybe Dany isn’t the queen that will save the realm, and it would explain his emotions shown at the end of the season when he watches Jon and Dany enter her bedroom. Could it be that he is looking for redemption?

I spent the weeks leading up to the respective premieres bingeing Season 2 of Better Call Saul which I'd lost track of shortly into its original airing. I loved Season 1 and though I'd been mildly unsure of how a spin-off of one of my favorite shows of all time, Breaking Bad, would fair; I came away impressed and enthralled in equal measures. BCS is a show with relatively low stakes when compared with the heart-pumping life or death moments of Breaking Bad, but it still manages, for me, to be just as engaging. It's incredible attention to detail, character, and visuals all perfectly match the quality of production and storytelling we've come to expect from Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. After making my way through Season 2 at a break-neck pace I realized this might be my preferred way to consume this particular show. While I love the slow-burn quality of the narrative, it is immensely satisfying to see the those slowly threaded dramatic bombs paid off in hours not weeks. With that in mind I've yet to get to the Season 3 Premiere, partly because of being extremely busy with the launching of this site, and partly because given the current slate of shows, I simply need something I can catch up on a little later. That being said, I can't wait to get back to Jimmy, Mike, and hopefully the impending appearance of everyone's favorite bad guy, Gus Fring!

Fargo Season 2 just missed me during its original airing. I caught the first 4 episodes and then work and other commitments forced it to the background (that and the commitment to watch every epsiode of The Leftovers Season 2 at least 3 times before the next one aired). After finally getting back to it and restarting from Episode 1, I must say that Fargo is neck and neck for my top slot of best show on television. For now it's second only to The Leftovers. I'll be diving into Season 3 very soon, with reactions to follow, I've avoided most of the trailers but the cast alone has me infinitely curious what Noah Hawley and company have cooked up this season.

And then there's The Leftovers; the show that, since the Finale of Mad Men I have seen fit to crown as the best show on Television. I've adored this show since Episode 1 and its only gotten better. Season 2 might legitimately be the single best stand alone season of television I've ever seen. Here's hoping Lindelof and Perrotta are able to stick the landing with these final 8 episodes. Based on S3E01 "The Book of Kevin" I don't think fans have much to worry about. The show made a triumphant return with one of the strongest hours of television in recent memory.
