STAFF MOTIVATION TIP OF THE WEEK

Have you ever noticed during a professional sporting event, the athletes frequently high-five their fellow teammates?  You will often see grown men slap each other on the backside or give one another a hug. This open display of celebration is uplifting and inspiring to see.

Try it now.  Turn to someone close and give them a high-five.  Watch their energy level go up and see the smile on their face.  If you are alone…give yourself a high-five now.  GO AHEAD!  I bet it made you smile.

YOUR staff…or your team is no different.  They appreciate the same recognition after every victory big or small.  They made a sale, signed on a new client or maybe your janitor made the chrome in your restrooms extra shiny.  Whatever the win…big or small…show your team the appreciation they deserve.  It doesn't have to be money or a bonus.  It can be a simple high-five, a morning coffee or a group huddle to announce their accomplishment. 1.  Celebrate immediately.  Don't rely on reminding yourself to do it later. If you act upon it instantly, it seems more sincere and the energy is at an all time high the moment the win happens.

2.  Everyone on the team celebrates.  I wasn't the only one in the office to give high-fives.  The entire team was notified of the win and everyone celebrated.  Those in the back office would run up front to give high-fives and vice-versa.

3.  The person that achieved the victory must accept all displays of celebration.  No one on the team is allowed to discredit or make small of their win.  Even our front desk receptionist got a high-five every time she scheduled a new consultation!

4.  Celebrate daily.  Anything positive happening in the business should be an easy invitation for a celebration.  Even if business is slow and there isn't a lot going on…if you look hard enough you can always find a reason to celebrate.

5.  There should be a penalty for those that do not celebrate.  A penalty embarrassing enough to motivate staff to be compliant.  In my business any team member that would not high-five or celebrate had to stand up and do the happy dance to a song of our choice for one minute at the next weekly staff meeting.  I can assure you that EVERYONE was sure to celebrate EVERY win at my company. 

6.  Be consistent.  Your team will quickly realize that celebrating ALL wins is here to stay.  Celebrating will become second nature to everyone.  You will find that they will expect it and be reminding YOU of the 'office policy';)

How many people get the chance to learn how to hire, fire and lead a team of people at such an early age?  I witnessed firsthand the issues that cause so many business owners pain and sleepless nights. After one year my father took my management experience to the next level.  He sent me to franchise school for salons.  My father was a franchise developer for several states.  He sent me off to train other franchisees in sales, marketing and building teams.  The number one complaint I heard from franchisees was employee issues.  Every one of them had a hard time finding good people, hiring the right person and keeping them once they were hired.

I felt their pain.  I knew all too well the frustration with high turnover.  You and I both know that it takes building a strong team to grow your business to new levels.  I learned as a teenager…my family was not in the fast food business or the hair styling business…we were in the people business.  Our business was supported by people that purchased our products and services and it was run by the people that followed our systems and methods. When my father finally chose to sell his franchises, I decided to spread my wings and venture out on my own.  I opened a vacuum cleaner store.  My first year in business I sold from a tiny bedroom apartment until I saved up enough money to open up the store.   When people hear my story they begin to laugh.  I tell them I was laughing too…all the way to the bank!  I made more money in two days than I made in one month for my dad.

I quickly realized that the faster I duplicated myself the more money I could make and the quicker I could grow…

I learned how to sell and quickly realized that the faster I duplicated myself the more money I could make and the quicker I could lease a space for my business.  I began putting ads in the paper for sales people.  I held my interviews at a local donut shop.   I had so many calls I had to hire someone just to help me answer the phone.  Then I got so bogged down interviewing that I was unable to find the time to go out and sell my product so my revenues began to decline.  I thought there has got to be a better way… So I made a script to read every time I got a call.  This script allowed me to sort through all of the people that I would never hire in the first place.  Then I realized that with every interview I would just repeat everything that I said in the 30 other interviews I held that week.  So I decided to bring everyone in at once and give them all the information at the same time.  I always told them about the product they would be selling and I told them how passionate I was about my business.  I began to notice that during my interviews…my interviewees wanted to buy my product and gave me referrals and I began selling to their friends too!

I began to make sales and get a ton of referrals by holding these interviews.  I knew I was onto something…

There were months I just wanted to hold an interview…not because I needed staff but because I loved the sales that came with the process every time I did it.  My sales team beat international records for vacuum sales not once, not twice but 8 times.  I typically ran a sales staff of 35 people.  I had a telemarketing room of 4 phone operators.  I had a secretary and a service person.  I was able to build such a successful team because of my unique and fool proof way of hiring.
