कौन था वह?

मयंक गहरी नींद में था, जब अचानक उसे एहसास हुआ कि कुछ उसकी छाती पर भारी पड़ रहा है और उसकी टाँगें मानो लकड़ियों के ढेर तले दब गई हों। उसने आँखें खोलीं तो देखा कि आरोहण अपनी जगह छोड़कर उसकी ओर लुढ़क आया है और अपने पाँव उसके ऊपर जमा दिए हैं। इसी वजह से वह खुद को पूरी तरह जकड़ा हुआ महसूस कर रहा था।

इसके अलावा, आरोहण की मुट्ठियाँ कसकर भींची हुई थीं; सिर एक ओर से दूसरी ओर डोल रहा था। वह तेज़-तेज़ साँसें भर रहा था और कुछ कहने की जद्दोजहद कर रहा था, जबकि उसकी आँखों की पुतलियाँ अजीब ढंग से घूम रही थीं। तभी अचानक उसने आँखें खोल दीं।

“क्या हो गया तुझे, आरोहण? तुझे तो जैसे दौरा-सा पड़ रहा था। सपना देखा क्या?” मयंक ने हैरानी से पूछा।

“सपना… हाँ, देखा तो था,” आरोहण ने उनींदे लहजे में कहा, “लेकिन ये दौरे-वौरे की बातें क्यों, भाई? मैं तो बस सोच रहा था कि मेरे लैपडॉग आइबो के उस हमशक्ल का क्या करूँ।”

मयंक हल्के से मुस्कराया। उसे मालूम था कि लोग नींद में बहुत कुछ कर बैठते हैं—कभी बकबक करना, कभी उठकर चलना, कभी कॉफ़ी बना लेना, और तो और दोस्तों की लॉकर से चुपके-चुपके बिस्कुट चुरा लेना—ये सब ग़फ़लत में हो जाता है।

आरोहण अब पूरी तरह उत्साहित था। "सुन ले मेरा ख़्वाब, भाई, नहीं तो भूल जाऊँगा," उसने इसरार करते हुए कहा।

मयंक, जो अब क़ैदी श्रोता बन चुका था, बोला, "मैं कान लगाकर सुन रहा हूँ, आरोहण, बोलते जाओ।"

हालाँकि वक़्त तो दोबारा नींद में लौट जाने का था, लेकिन मयंक अब भी यही आस लगाए था कि आरोहण का यह ताज़ा ख़्वाब शायद उसके अतीत पर कुछ रौशनी डाल दे। दरअसल, इतने सपने सुन लेने के बावजूद, जिनमें से ज़्यादातर का कोई सिर-पैर नहीं निकलता था, मयंक मन ही मन यही चाहता था कि यह सिलसिला तब तक चलता रहे—जब तक आरोहण के पास सपनों का ज़ख़ीरा बाक़ी है, या कम से कम तब तक, जब तक उसे अपने दोस्त की ग्यारह बरस की ग़ैरहाज़िरी का कोई ठोस सुराग न मिल जाए।

आधी रात को किसी सुनसान जंगल से गुज़रना सचमुच दिल दहला देने वाला तजुर्बा होता है। सूखे बाँसों की आपसी रगड़ से उठती किरकिराती आवाज़ किसी चुड़ैल की चीख़ जैसी डरावनी लगती है। राह के किनारे उगी कोई मामूली झाड़ी भी ऐसे मालूम पड़ती है, मानो कोई बदनुमा साया एड़ियों के बल घात लगाए दुबका हो। पत्तों की सरसराहट से दिल में यह वहम जगता है कि कोई दबे पाँव पीछे-पीछे आ रहा है। झींगुरों की कराह, मेंढकों की टर्राहट, दरिंदों की दहाड़ और उल्लुओं की हूटिंग—ये सब मिलकर किसी भी शख़्स के होश उड़ा देने के लिए काफी हैं, जो उनकी भुतही दुनिया में क़दम रखने की जुर्रत कर बैठे। ऐसे माहौल में, एक छोटे बच्चे या किसी पालतू कुत्ते की सोहबत भी जंगल पार करने का सहारा लगती है। आधी रात का जंगल वाक़ई इतना खौफ़नाक हो सकता है!

मैं अभी-अभी अपनी जंगली मुहिम से लौटा हूँ। आह, सोचता हूँ तो लगता है—क्या अजीबो-ग़रीब रात थी!

मैं फ़ुलबाणी की ओर जा रहा था, जो कंधमाल ज़िले का सदर-मकान है। रास्ते में कलिंगा के एक सरकारी विश्रामगृह में ठहरने का फ़ैसला किया। वह जगह "कउरी जिरा" नाम के एक घने वर्षावन के क़रीब थी।

कउरी जिरा की शान-ओ-शौकत के बारे में बहुत कुछ सुन रखा था—साँस रोक देने वाली, दिल मोह लेने वाली, मानो सारी जादूगरी वहीं आकर समा गई हो। वहाँ की भोर की ख़ामोशी वसंत की महकती ख़ुशबू में घुलकर दिल को मदहोश कर देती है। झाड़ियाँ अपारगम्य नहीं थीं; उनकी सलीक़ेदार बनावट चितकबरे आसमान-सी लगती थी—न कि किसी समंदर किनारे बिखरे कूड़े-कचरे की तरह बेतरतीब। जंगल में साल के पेड़ हर तरफ़ सलीके से खड़े नज़र आते थे, और उनके तनों के चारों ओर फैली साफ़-सुथरी ज़मीन पहली ही नज़र में दिल लुभा लेती थी। वे पेड़ सचमुच जंगल के बादशाह मालूम होते थे—उनकी ऊँची छतरियाँ जितनी दिलकश थीं, ज़मीन भी उतनी ही करीने से सजी हुई थी।

“वैज्ञानिक सोच और आदिवासी विकास”—यही मेरे शोध का विषय था। योजना थी कि निष्कर्षों को किस्तों में प्रकाशित करूँ और उसके साथ-साथ एक डॉक्यूमेंट्री भी बनाऊँ। इलाक़े के कुछ समाजसेवियों से बातचीत का इरादा भी था, जो अंधविश्वास और डायन-प्रथा के ख़िलाफ़ लगातार जद्दोजहद कर रहे थे।

अप्रैल की एक सुकून-भरी शाम थी, जब मैं उस सरकारी विश्रामगृह पहुँचा। उफ़! पिछले बारह घंटे से बिजली ग़ायब थी। केयरटेकर ने बताया कि अगले अड़तालीस घंटे तक आने की कोई उम्मीद नहीं। मजबूरन, मैंने उस रात की असुविधा सह लेने का मन बना लिया।

मगर अजीब बात यह थी कि मेरा पालतू आइबो—लाल रंग का निडर पोमेरेनियन—ज़रा भी परेशान न था। वह अपने मालिक की क़ाबिलियत जानता था, और शायद इसी वजह से बेफ़िक्र भी था। बल्कि वह तो खेलने के मूड में दिख रहा था। उसके अंदाज़ से लगता था मानो कह रहा हो, “ये छोटी-मोटी तकलीफ़ें तो आती-जाती रहती हैं; मैं तो अब किसी साहसिक मुहिम की तैयारी में हूँ!”

उस जगह की मिट्टी की भीनी ख़ुशबू और सुकून भरा माहौल मुझे भी छोटी-छोटी फ़िक्रों से आज़ाद कर गया। जैसे मेरा फुर्तीला पालतू हर नए मोड़ पर उत्साह से उछल पड़ता है, वैसे ही मैंने भी उम्मीद की डोर थाम ली। कउरी जिरा की झाड़ियों के बीच शायद मेरी तहक़ीक़ात को नई दिशा मिल जाए—कहीं कोई भूली-बिसरी डायन की गुफ़ा या उसका जादुई असबाब हाथ लग जाए! एक स्थानीय बाशिंदा, जो उस ज़मीन से भली-भांति वाक़िफ़ था, सहर्ष गाइड बनने को राज़ी हो गया। उसका कहना था कि लोग उसके तजुर्बे से फ़ायदा उठाएँ। कुल मिलाकर, यह सफ़र यादगार बनने ही वाला था।

“कउरी जिरा” नाम में एक अजीब-सी तुकबंदी थी। मैंने पूछा—क्या इस नाम का कोई मतलब है? गाइड, जो जानकारी देने को काफ़ी उतावला था, बोला, “मायने हैं, हुज़ूर—वो जंगल जहाँ पुराने ज़माने में भैंसे ग़ायब हो जाया करते थे!” यह तफ़सीर बड़ी दिलकश और प्यारी लगी—किसी ‘शैतान की गुफ़ा’ या ‘वीरान बीहड़’ जैसी डरावनी नहीं।

हमने तय किया कि अगली सुबह निकलेंगे। हमारी छोटी-सी टोली थी—मैं, गाइड और आइबो। आइबो—वो निडर मुसाफ़िर—जोश से लबरेज़ था; गाइड, तजुर्बेकार होते हुए भी, भूत-प्रेत और उनकी नस्लों की कहानियों में डूबा रहता था। मुझे डर था कि कहीं यह सफ़र “मिडनाइट्स चिल्ड्रेन” की तरह न हो जाए, जहाँ सलीम और उसके दोस्त सुंदरबन में भटक जाते हैं। मगर गाइड का दावा था कि वो सिर्फ़ हवा की ख़ुशबू सूंघकर रास्ता पहचान लेता है! आइबो ग़ौर से हमारी बातचीत सुन रहा था—उसकी हिलती पूँछ उसकी रज़ामंदी का सबूत थी। इतना खुश नज़र आ रहा था कि मानो अभी मुँह खोलकर कह दे: “सुनिए मालिक, मैं तो बेहद रोमांचित हूँ! अगर आप किसी वजह से नहीं गए, तो मैं अकेले ही निकल पड़ूँगा।” इत्मिनान से वो आराम करने चला गया।

शाम की नाश्ता और एक सिगरेट के बाद, मैं गाइड से थोड़ी देर और गुफ़्तगू करता रहा। दिलचस्पी ऐसी थी कि बार-बार वही सवाल दोहरा देता:

“क्या रास्ते में कोई रीछ हमें घात लगाकर दबोच सकता है?”

“नहीं, हरगिज़ नहीं!” गाइड ने तसल्ली दी। “भालू रात तक अपनी मांद से बाहर नहीं निकलते।” फिर भी, एहतियातन हमने तय किया कि सुबह थोड़ा देर से निकलेंगे और दोपहर के खाने से पहले ही लौट आएँगे।

अब रात के सवा दस बज चुके थे और मेरी गाइड से गुफ़्तगू मुकम्मल हो चुकी थी। मैं फौरन उस छोटे कमरे की ओर दौड़ा, जहाँ आइबो ठहरा हुआ था और अपनी रोज़ाना की रात की सैर के लिए बेसब्री से मेरा इंतज़ार कर रहा था। यह उसकी दिनचर्या का हिस्सा था। आम तौर पर अगर उसकी दिनचर्या में बिना रज़ामंदी के कोई तब्दीली हो जाती, तो वह बेचैनी में कूँ-कूँ करने लगता।

लेकिन आज अजीब सन्नाटा था—हालाँकि हम काफ़ी देर कर चुके थे। मगर आइबो था कहाँ? यह कोई वक़्त नहीं था कि वह अपने-आप बाहर निकल जाए। वह कोई आवारा नस्ल का थोड़े ही था!

"आइबो, ओ मेरे मनमौजी, मेरे शहज़ादे आइबो!" मैं पागलों की तरह बग़ीचे के पिछवाड़े में उसे ढूँढने लगा। जवाब सन्नाटे का मिला। मैंने बग़ीचे के हर कोने को छान डाला—यहाँ तक कि उन छोटी-छोटी झाड़ियों में भी, जहाँ आइबो खेलना पसंद करता था। लेकिन सब बेकार।

भटकना आइबो के मिज़ाज में कभी शामिल नहीं था। हाँ, उसने जीनिया की क्यारी को इस कदर खोद डाला था कि अंकुर फूटने की गुंजाइश ही नहीं बची, अब तक मज़े से आधा दर्जन तकिए फाड़ डाले, आँगन के हर चमेली के पौधे पर लघुशंका कर अपनी मौजूदगी दर्ज कराई, और शैंकी नाम की बिल्ली से बेवजह झगड़ा मोल लिया। लेकिन अपने मालिक की हद पार कर बाहर आवारागर्दी करना—ये उसकी आन-बान-शान के ख़िलाफ़ था। तो फिर गया कहाँ? और वह भी इस अजनबी जगह में?

मेरी बेताब पुकार सुनकर केयरटेकर दौड़ा आया, मगर कोई कारगर जानकारी न दे सका।

"हुज़ूर, यहाँ विश्रामगृह में कोई नहीं है जो आपके कुत्ते को चुरा ले!" उसने मेरे अनकहे इल्ज़ाम का जवाब देते हुए कहा।

अब चाहे आइबो नासमझी में कहीं निकल गया हो या किसी चोर की नज़र का शिकार हो गया हो, हमें तो बिना सिरा पाए तलाश शुरू करनी थी। मंज़िल: कउरी जिरा। ग़नीमत थी कि गाइड अब तक गया नहीं था, सो हमने फ़ौरन रात्रिकालीन तलाश का इरादा कर लिया।

मैं टॉर्च साथ लाना नहीं भूला, जबकि गाइड ने लोहे से मढ़ी हुई लाठी उठाई—यानि उसके निचले सिरे पर लोहे की चप्पी चढ़ी थी, ताकि ज़मीन पर टिकाऊ रहे और जल्दी न घिसे। ऊपर से, उसका यक़ीन था कि लोहे को छू लेने से भूत-प्रेत और उनके तमाम कुनबे से बचाव हो जाता है। उसके पास नमक की एक छोटी पोटली भी थी—कहता था, यह सबसे सख़्त रूहों को भी डराने के लिए काफ़ी है।

हमने जल्द ही तक़रीबन एक किलोमीटर का फ़ासला तय कर लिया। रास्ता टेढ़ा-मेढ़ा था और बड़े-बड़े पत्थरों से अटा पड़ा था। मैंने आइबो को पुकारा, मगर कोई जवाब न आया—सिर्फ़ मेरी आवाज़ थी, जो जंगल की ख़ामोशी में गूँजकर लौट रही थी। मेरी टॉर्च की रोशनी गहरे अंधेरे के सामने पस्त पड़ती जा रही थी, और मुझे ऐसा लगने लगा मानो मैं किसी कोयले की खान में भटक रहा हूँ, जहाँ मेरी एकमात्र रोशनी किसी भी पल बुझ सकती है।

हम बीस मिनट और बढ़े और एक ऐसे मोड़ पर पहुँचे, जहाँ रास्ता दो हिस्सों में बँट गया। आइबो किसी भी राह पर निकल गया होगा, मगर उसका कोई सुराग नहीं था। आख़िरकार हमने अलग-अलग दिशाओं में तलाश का फ़ैसला किया—गाइड बाएँ मुड़ा और मैं दाएँ।

पाँच मिनट भी नहीं गुज़रे थे कि गाइड के क़दमों की आहट जंगल में कहीं गुम हो गई। अब मैं बिल्कुल अकेला था। आइबो को पुकारता रहा, मगर डर भीतर ही भीतर पहाड़ की तरह बढ़ता चला गया। न मेरे पास गाइड की लोहे से मढ़ी लाठी थी, न भूत-भगाने वाला नमक। अब तो मेरी अपनी आवाज़ ही मुझे खौफ़नाक लगने लगी थी—उसकी गूँज मेरी रीढ़ में कभी तपिश, कभी ठंडी लहर दौड़ा देती। नतीजा यह हुआ कि मेरे क़दमों की रफ़्तार भी डगमगाने लगी।

अचानक मेरी दाहिनी ओर कुछ सरसराता हुआ गुज़रा—सूखी पत्तियों की मोटी परत को चीरता हुआ। मेरी टॉर्च की रोशनी इतनी कमज़ोर थी कि मैं साफ़-साफ़ देख न पाया।
“शायद कोई लोमड़ी या खरगोश होगा,” मैंने अपनी दहशत दबाने की कोशिश की और आगे बढ़ गया।

थोड़ी ही देर में कुछ सौ क़दम दूर किसी जानवर के खर्राटे सुनाई दिए। मैं ठिठक गया। टॉर्च की रोशनी चारों तरफ़ घुमाई, मगर नतीजा सिफ़र ही रहा। किसी भालू के अचानक सामने आ जाने का ख़याल आते ही मैं काँप उठा। आँखें बंद कर हिम्मत बटोरने की कोशिश करने लगा।

पास ही एक पानी का गड्ढा था, जिसमें न कोई धारा मिलती थी, न कोई निकलती थी। मैंने उधर नज़र डाली—कुछ दिखाई न दिया। मगर दूसरी बार देखा तो टॉर्च की रोशनी अचानक तेज़ हो उठी।

और वहाँ क्या था?

अरे! वहाँ आइबो था—एक चट्टान पर बैठा, खुद में सिमटा हुआ। बेचारा बेहद परेशान मालूम पड़ रहा था; पेट खाली, जान पूरी तरह थक चुकी थी। क्लांति और निढालपन उसके जिस्म से टपक रहा था। शुद्ध नस्ल के कुत्ते अक्सर ऐसे ही होते हैं—मैंने खुद को तसल्ली दी—अपने अज़ीज़ों से जुदाई वो सह नहीं पाते। उसने मुझे ऐसे देखा, मानो हमारे पुराने रिश्ते की डोर याद करने की कोशिश कर रहा हो।

मैंने उसे नर्मी से गोद में उठाया और वापसी की राह पकड़ ली। उसका जिस्म ठंडा था, लेकिन उसने अपना सिर मेरी बाँह के नीचे छुपा लिया। इससे मुझे हल्की-सी गुदगुदी भी हुई और क़दमों की लय भी लौट आई। अंधेरे, वीरान जंगल का खौफ़ जैसे धीरे-धीरे पिघलने लगा।

अब मुझे अपने गाइड को इत्तला देनी थी। जहाँ हम जुदा हुए थे, वहाँ पहुँचने में तक़रीबन आधा घंटा लग गया, लेकिन गाइड अब तक लौटा न था।

"आइबो यहाँ है!"—मेरी तरफ़ से ज़ोरदार पुकार थी, मगर कोई जवाब न आया। आधी रात बीत चुकी थी, और जंगल हर पल और ज़्यादा सीलन भरा, बेचैन करने वाला लगता जा रहा था। आइबो भी बेक़रार हो उठा।

वो मेरी गोद से कूद पड़ा और बिना पीछे देखे चल पड़ा। हैरत होती है कि एक पालतू जानवर भी इतना गृहातुर हो सकता है!

मैं भी उसके पीछे-पीछे विश्रामगृह पहुँचा। वह सीधे कमरे के कोने में बने अपने छोटे-से बिस्तर की तरफ़ बढ़ा। अरे बाप रे! वहाँ आइबो पहले से मौजूद था—अपने ही बिस्तर पर इत्मिनान से सोता हुआ। तो फिर जिसे मैं पानी के गड्ढे से उठा लाया था, वह कौन था? क्या वह मेरा वही “गुडी-मूडी आइबो” नहीं था? मेरी हैरानी की कोई हद न रही।

मैंने दोनों जीवों को बारी-बारी से देखा। दोनों हूबहू एक जैसे थे—एक ही क़द-काठी, वही रंग-रूप, वही बालों की घनता और वही चमकती नाक। उनमें फर्क करना नामुमकिन था। अंजाना डर फिर से पूरे ज़ोर-ओ-शोर के साथ लौट आया। मैं सिर से पाँव तक काँप उठा; जिस्म का हर रोम खड़ा हो गया। चीख़ना नामुमकिन था—गला सूख चुका था। बस एक धीमी, लगभग अनसुनी सिसकी ही निकल पाई।

कउरी जिरा से आया आइबो मेरी तरफ़ झुंझलाकर घूरने लगा। उसकी आँखों में शुद्ध शैतानियत चमक रही थी। फिर उसने नज़र फेर ली और पुराने आइबो की तरफ़ देखा। धीरे-धीरे वह उसकी ओर बढ़ा—पूरी तरह इत्मीनान के साथ, बिना डरे, बिना पीछे हटे। एक कुत्ता दूसरे कुत्ते के इतने क़रीब पहुँचे—वह भी बिना झगड़े के—यह अपने आप में ग़ज़ब का मंज़र था। शायद कुत्तों की दुनिया में कोई नई तहज़ीब चल पड़ी हो!

अचानक उसने अपने चारों तरफ़ बेइंतहा तेज़ी से घूमना शुरू किया। फिर वह हवा में उठा और असली आइबो में जा समाया—मानो किसी धूम्रपान करने वाले के सिर के ऊपर धुएँ का गोल छल्ला बन गया हो। जैसे कोई छोटा बुलबुला बड़े बुलबुले में समाकर अपनी पहचान पूरी तरह ग़ायब कर दे। कुछ ही पलों में आइबो गहरी नींद में डूब गया—जैसे कुछ हुआ ही न हो।

इतने में केयरटेकर हड़बड़ाकर दौड़ा आया। "माफ़ कीजिए हुज़ूर, आपको बेवजह बाहर जाना पड़ा। आइबो तो यहीं था। आपके निकलने के थोड़ी ही देर बाद अपने बिस्तर पर सोता मिला।"

उसी वक़्त गाइड भी आ पहुँचा। मुझे देखकर वह खुश हुआ और आइबो को उसके बिस्तर पर देखकर और भी आश्वस्त।

"सर, कहाँ मिला वो?" गाइड ने ताज्जुब से पूछा।

मैं दोहरे आइबो की अजीबो-ग़रीब दास्तान सुनाने ही वाला था कि केयरटेकर बीच में बोल पड़ा, "अरे चाचा, आइबो तो यहीं था। आप लोगों के जाते ही थोड़ी देर बाद अपने बिस्तर पर पड़ा मिल गया।"

इस तरह, मैं न तो किसी को ये क़िस्सा सुना सका, न ही इस वाक़ए का कोई माक़ूल जवाब ढूँढ पाया। अगर मुँह खोलता, तो लोग मुझे टोने-टोटके में फँसा कोई बेवक़ूफ़ समझते। और हाँ, मुझे दोगला तर्कवादी भी कहते—वो पाखंडी जो हर वक़्त वैज्ञानिक सोच का राग अलापता फिरता है।

अब मुझे किसी से तसल्ली चाहिए थी। कौन कह सकता है कि वो कुत्ता कोई भूत-प्रेत या वेयरवुल्फ, यानी भड़मानस, का रूप न हो? मगर असली सवाल तो यही था—क्या अब मुझे किसी ओझा को बुलाना चाहिए?

“यही सब मेरे ख़्वाब का हिस्सा था, और फिर अचानक नींद टूट गई।”—आरोहण ने फ़िल्मी ठाठ से कहा।

मयंक को यह क़िस्सा बेहद दिलचस्प लगा, मगर फिर वही पुराना सवाल सामने आ खड़ा हुआ: आख़िर वह अपने दोस्त के ख़्वाब और हक़ीक़त के बीच तालमेल कैसे बिठाए? एक कुत्ते का दूसरे में समा जाना जितना मज़ाक़िया लगता था, उतना ही गहरी अहमियत भी रखता था। क्या यह इशारा था कि अब आरोहण को वह क़ाबिलियत मिल चुकी है—अपने यार के दिल-ओ-दिमाग़ में झाँकने की, और किसी नाज़ुक रूहानी सतह पर ख़ुद को वहाँ पहुँचा देने की?

सुबह के छह बज चुके थे, और आरोहण फिर से गहरी नींद में डूब चुका था। मयंक उसकी साँसों की उतार-चढ़ाव भरी लय महसूस कर रहा था। पिछली शाम होटल के एक मुलाज़िम ने उसे बताया था कि सड़क के पार रेसकोर्स नाम का एक बेहतरीन वॉकर ट्रैक है, जहाँ सुबह-सुबह सैकड़ों सेहत-प्रेमी जमा होते हैं। मयंक की उड़ान 11 बजे थी, इसलिए उसने सोचा कि क्यों न एक छोटी-सी सैर के लिए वक़्त निकाला जाए।

ढाई किलोमीटर लंबे, हरे-भरे गोल ट्रैक पर टहलते हुए मयंक ने जेब से वह काग़ज़ी रोल निकाला, जो उसे वालपारई में आरोहण के कमरे से मिला था। सावधानी से खोलते ही उसमें से एक रेलवे टिकट निकला—नीलगिरि माउंटेन रेलवे का—जिसमें 26 जनवरी 2012 को ऊटी से मेट्टुपालयम की यात्रा दर्ज थी।

मयंक का क़दम ठिठक गया। इसका मतलब था कि उस दिन आरोहण दिमाग़ी तौर पर बिल्कुल सही-सलामत था… या फिर किसी और ने उसके लिए यह टिकट ख़रीदा था। मगर क्यों? किसने? और किस मंसूबे से?

एक पल के लिए उसके ज़हन में ख़याल कौंधा—शायद किसी देशभक्त हिन्दुस्तानी ने मदद की नीयत से, गणतंत्र दिवस पर, उसके लिए यह टिकट ले दिया हो। मगर यह संभावना उतनी ही जल्दी धुंधली हो गई, जितनी तेज़ी से आई थी। मयंक को याद ही नहीं आ रहा था कि क्या आरोहण कभी नीलगिरि की वादियों में गया भी था। और अगर गया भी, तो पहुँचा कैसे—जबकि सब जानते थे कि उस वक़्त वह दिमाग़ी तौर पर अस्थिर था।

तिरुपति यात्रा के दौरान वह अपने दो चाचाओं और चाची के समूह से बिछुड़ गया था। तो फिर कौन था जिसने उसे ऊटी तक पहुँचाया? और किसने नीलगिरि माउंटेन रेल की उस ठंडी, धुंध में डूबी सुबह उसकी यात्रा मुकम्मल कराई?

अब मयंक के दिल में यह एहसास गहराई से जम चुका था—जो सुराग अभी-अभी हाथ आया है, वह इस रहस्य का दरवाज़ा खोल सकता है… या फिर किसी और बड़े, अनदेखे भँवर में उसे खींच सकता है।

To Exorcise or Not

Mayank was fast asleep when he suddenly felt something weighing down his chest, his legs buried beneath a pile of logs. He opened his eyes and discovered that Aarohan had shifted his side of the bed, depositing his legs upon his own—hence the feeling of immobilisation. Additionally, Aarohan was sleeping with his hands clenched, his head moving from side to side. He was breathing fast and appeared to be struggling to talk, his eyeballs rolling incredibly. Then, abruptly, he opened his eyes.

‘What’s with you, Aarohan? You had convulsions. Had a dream or what?’ asked Mayank.

‘Dream, yes, I had one, but what’s with this convulsion business, buddy? I was only wondering what to do with Aibo, the lapdog,’ Aarohan protested, dramatically overcoming his drowsiness.

Mayank smiled knowingly. He was aware of people talking a lot while asleep, walking, making themselves coffees, and even stealing cookies from friends’ lockers—all these actions performed unknowingly!

Aarohan was eager. ‘Lest I should forget it, listen to my dream, bro,’ he insisted. Mayank, the captive listener, agreed, ‘I’m all ears, Aarohan, go ahead.’ Although it was time for them to be asleep, Mayank hoped that Aarohan’s new episode might shed some light on his past. Aarohan then related his dream.

Passing through a desolate jungle at midnight can be a genuinely terrifying experience. The mere friction between dried bamboos can produce a sound as blood-curdling as the scream of a churail. Even a tiny wayside bush could resemble someone sinister crouching on their haunches. The sibilant rustles of leaves could give the impression of someone stalking nearby. The droning cicadas, the croaking frogs, the howling predators, and the hooting owls would team up to terrorise a soul daring to intrude on their spooky domain. In such an environment, one would crave the companionship of even a small child or a pet dog to traverse the woods. A jungle at midnight could be as creepy as that!

I just returned from my wild exploration. Ah, come to think of it, what an eerie night!

While heading for Phulbani, the headquarters of Kandhamal district, I stopped for the night in a wayside government rest house in Kalinga. It was in the vicinity of a rainforest known as Kauri Jira.

I had heard much about the sylvan grandeur of Kauri Jira—breathtaking and stunningly magical, as if the very elements of enchantment had converged there. It was where the quiet of dawn blended with the fragrance of spring. Its thickets were not impenetrable; their tidiness mirrored a mackerel sky, unlike the clutter of a beach strewn with flotsam. The forest abounded with sal trees, and the near absence of tangled undergrowth was inviting at first sight. These trees stood as royals of the forest, their towering canopies as well-kept as the ground around their trunks.

The Scientific Spirit and Tribal Development: I was working on this thesis, intending to publish its findings in instalments. Additionally, it was my idea to produce a documentary. Interviewing a few social workers fighting endemic superstitions and witchcraft was also part of the plan.

It was a calm April evening, and I checked into the government rest house. Aw! There had been no electricity in the building for the last twelve hours. The caretaker informed me that the supply would not resume in the next forty-eight hours, so I braced myself for a night of inconvenience.

But strangely, my pet Aibo, a red Pomeranian of fearless disposition, seemed to be without any quibbles. He was accustomed to his master’s inability to arrange the best. So, he was in a playful mood. His indifference to the unforeseen discomfort said he was planning a grand adventure!

The balmy ambience of the spot bailed me out of the minor worries of the present. Like my jaunty little pet, I, too, began to look on the brighter side. Besides accommodating my wanderlust, the thickets of Kauri Jira might offer inputs for my research, say, an abandoned lair of a witch or her magic wand. A resident readily agreed to guide me, as he knew the terrain well and loved helping people from his experience. So, it promised a memorable jaunt.

The name Kauri Jira had a bit of internal rhyme. Did the alliteration bear any meaning? My guide, too keen to impart information, said it meant a jungle where buffaloes would disappear in the hoary old days. It was a funny and charming clarification, not scary like the Devil’s Den or the Perilous Wilderness!

We decided to set out for the trek the next day. Our small party would consist of Aibo, our guide, and me. Aibo, the intrepid explorer, was brimming with excitement, while our guide, though knowledgeable, had his mind cluttered with tales of ghosts and their genealogies. I hoped the experience wouldn’t feel as eerie as Midnight’s Children, where Rushdie’s Saleem and his friends get lost in the Sundarbans. Still, my guide boasted that he could find his way merely by sniffing the breeze! Aibo listened attentively to our plan; his wagging tail showed his consent. He seemed so happy he might burst into human speech at any moment: “Listen, master, I’m thrilled! Even if you decide not to go for some reason, I’ll go alone.” Satisfied, Aibo went to rest.

After our evening snacks and a quick smoke break, I chatted with the guide a little longer. Curiously, I kept asking the same question: Could a bear ambush us on the trail? “No chance!” my guide reassured me, adding, “Bears stick to their dens until nightfall.” To be extra cautious, however, we agreed to start late in the morning and plan to be back just in time for a late lunch.

It was a quarter past ten p.m., and my consultations with my guide had ended. So, I darted to the small anteroom where Aibo was staying, waiting for me to take him for a short walk inside the campus. It was his nightly routine. Ordinarily, he would give a restless whine if a change in the regimen ever happened without his consent. But there was none today, even if we were already late.

But where was Aibo? It was an ungodly hour—no time for the pedigree to venture out alone!

‘Aibo, my moody-goody Aibo,’ I frenetically searched around the backyard. There was no response. I went to all possible corners of the garden, including the small bushes that Aibo was fond of, but to no avail.

Straying was not on the list of Aibo’s antics. He had scratched the zinnia beds, torn half a dozen pillows so far for fun, cocked his legs by every flowering jasmine in the courtyard, and mindlessly fought with Shanky, the kitten. But then, stepping out of his master’s premises for wayward wanderings was, according to him, undignified! Then, why did he stray out, forgetting that he was new to the place?

The caretaker came running as I desperately called out to Aibo, but could give no practical tip. ‘There’s none in the rest house, sir, to steal your dog?’ he stated in reply to my unstated charge.

Regardless of whether the pet had foolishly wandered off or fallen prey to a kleptomaniac, we needed to begin a blind search. Destination: Kauri Jira. Luckily, the guide hadn’t left yet, so we set out immediately on our nocturnal hunt. I remembered to bring my flashlight while the guide carried an iron-shod bamboo stick. Ghosts fear bamboo, he often insisted! He also had a small sachet of salt, which he claimed could scare off even the rowdiest spirits.

We soon travelled about a kilometre into the jungle. The trail twisted and turned, strewn with boulders. I called out to Aibo, but there was no response—only my voice echoing at amplified decibels. My flashlight was weak against the thick darkness, and I began to feel as if floundering in a coal pit, my only light at risk of flickering out.

We walked for another twenty minutes and reached a point where the path forked in two directions. Aibo would have taken either of the two—there was hardly a clue. So, we moved in different directions: my guide chose the left, and I the right.

In five short minutes, my guide’s footsteps died away. Now, I was on my own. Though I kept calling Aibo, fear snowballed in me. Neither an iron-shod bamboo nor a pouch of anti-ghost salt was in my possession. The echo of my voice began to sound terrifying, sending a strange, now-hot-and-then-cold sensation along my spine. As a result, my strides began to lose rhythm.

Something ran past me on my right, rustling through the thick cover of dried leaves. It was hardly visible as my flashlight had gone hopelessly dim. ‘It could be a fox or a rabbit,’ I plodded on, trying to overlook my trepidation.

Hearing a beast grunting some hundred steps away, I stopped dead in my tracks. However, nothing came to my attention as I played the torch beam on all four sides. Fear of the sudden emergence of a bear with its claws flexed gripped me, so I shut my eyes to summon up courage.

There was a waterhole nearby—it had no stream merging into or branching out of it. I looked towards the body of water but found nothing. And then a second look—this time, my flashlight emitted a beam remarkably brighter.

And what was there to see?

Hey! There was Aibo, sitting withdrawn on a rock. The poor thing looked distressed, his stomach was empty, and his energy was drained. He seemed exhausted and droopy. Pedigree dogs are always like that—I tried to reason with myself—they are not made for enduring separation from their loved ones. He looked at me as if trying to recall the exact nature of our past bond.

Gently, I cradled Aibo in my arms and began the walk back. He was cold, but he nestled his head under my arm, which tickled me and helped me regain the rhythm of my stride. My fear of the dark, lonely jungle melted away.

It was time I updated my guide. It took me roughly half an hour to reach where we had parted, but the guide had yet to return.

‘Aibo is here,’ it was incontestably an ear-splitting call on my part, but there was no response. At well past midnight, the jungle felt unbearably damp by the second, driving Aibo restless.

He jumped out of my lap and began to walk without looking back. A pet could be so homesick!

Reaching the rest house, I followed Aibo closely into the cubbyhole. Oh my God! There was Aibo, sleeping contentedly on his bed. Then what about the one I picked up from the waterhole? Is this not my goody-moody Aibo? My shock knew no bounds.

I looked back and forth between the two creatures. They were identical—the same height, colour, coat density, and shiny muzzles—so it was impossible to tell Aibo from Aibo. My old fear of the unknown returned with a vengeance. I was shivering from scalp to toe, goosebumps covering every inch of my skin. Crying out was impossible; my throat was dry. All I could manage was a feeble whimper, barely audible.

Aibo from Kauri Jira looked at me, snarling with spite. His eyes conveyed unmistakable villainy. Then he broke eye contact and glanced toward the old Aibo. Slowly, he inched toward his counterpart, showing complete control and making no attempt to slink away. A dog was approaching another of his species, boldly violating personal space—yet, strangely enough, there was no fight! Perhaps it was a new social norm in the canine fraternity.

Suddenly, he began spinning around himself at an incredible speed. Then, he levitated and morphed into the real Aibo, creating an illusion like a ring of smoke hovering above a smoker’s head. It was like a small bubble merging seamlessly into a larger one, losing its identity entirely! In no time, Aibo drifted into an addict’s sleep as if nothing unusual had ever happened.

Presently, the excited caretaker came running. ‘I’m sorry, sir, you had to venture out needlessly. Aibo was very much here. I found him lying on his bed soon after you left.’

Just in time, my guide arrived. He was happy to see me back and even happier to see Aibo on his bed, snoring in homely comfort.

‘Where did you find him, sir?’ the guide enquired.

I was about to tell him the weird story of double Aibos, but the caretaker chipped in. ‘He was very much here, Uncle, and I discovered him resting on his bed just after you people left.’

Thus, I could neither tell anyone the story nor find a reasonable explanation for the incident. If I had opened my mouth, people would have taken me for a moron affected by witchery. They would have seen in me a two-faced rationalist, a cocksure hypocrite forever blabbering about the scientific temper.

Now, I badly needed assurance. Who could deny that the dog was not the transfiguration of a ghost or a werewolf? But the delicate question remained: should I go ahead and arrange an exorcist?

‘That was all I was wondering as I woke up,’ said Aarohan, giving a crisp concluding remark.

Mayank enjoyed the episode, but then the old question surfaced—how could he reconcile his friend’s dream with reality? The idea of a dog entering another was too funny, but, more than its superficial import, it held a vital clue. Did it suggest that Aarohan had acquired the ability to know what was happening in his friend’s mind, translocating himself at a diaphanous mental level?

It was already six a.m., and Aarohan had returned to his sleep. Mayank could feel the rhythm of his breath. Last evening, a hotel chap briefed him about an excellent walkers’ track across the road, the Race Course, where health freaks assembled in droves. Mayank’s flight was at 11 o’clock, so he could easily take a short morning walk.

While strolling along the 2.5-kilometre-long circular track, Mayank took out the paper roll he had picked up in Aarohan’s room at Valparai. He unrolled it and discovered a railway ticket issued by the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, authorising a trip from Ooty to Mettupalayam on 26 January 2012. This indicated that Aarohan was fine that day. Alternatively, someone else might have purchased the ticket for him. But for what reason? It seemed like a benevolent gesture from a patriotic Indian on the sixty-third Republic Day of India! Mayank could not recall if Aarohan had been to Nilgiris earlier, and he was confused about how Aarohan managed to get to Ooty, especially if he was mentally unwell. Everyone knew he had strayed from the group of uncles and aunts when they went to Tirupati. Who had helped Aarohan reach Ooty and board the Nilgiri Mountain Rail from Udagmandalam to Mettupalayam?

When Mayank reached Visakhapatnam, he would seek more facts from Aarohan’s uncles. The clue he had chanced upon should help him solve the mystery.

Here are a few words about my recent short story collection, "On the Fly".

Stories endure because they carry meanings larger than their plots. Whether they illuminate a philosophy, expose the exploitation of the weak by the powerful, reveal a quiet art of survival, or simply offer the joy of irony and everyday humour, they all serve a purpose. The tales of kings and queens, of demons and their celestial rivals, once helped ordinary people imagine worlds beyond their reach and reflect upon the nature of power, morality, and possibility. In the same way, the stories in this collection revisit the familiar landscapes of our lives—labour colonies and school verandas, village chaupals and forest trails, cramped hostels and bustling city corners—to reveal the subtler truths hidden beneath routine living.

On the Fly brings together a variety of such stories, each written with deliberate intent yet gentle in its approach—never sermonising, always companionable. Whether it is a seven-year-old girl forming a quiet bond with a goat, an elderly woman negotiating dignity in a patriarchal settlement, a child discovering patriotism in its most innocent form, or a bachelor navigating life with nothing but resilience and a fishing hook, each tale offers a spark: a reflection, a question, or a path. These stories do not promise solutions; instead, they hold a lantern over possibilities—what to embrace, what to resist, and how to remain human in a swiftly changing world.

Other stories in the collection deepen this tapestry of meanings. In Trinket Case, Vimal’s long-delayed gift to his mother affirms that good intentions, patiently upheld, become their own success story. Bhima: The Bandit with Arithmetic reveals how even a thief may emerge as a poor man’s unexpected ally, rescuing him from the predatory grip of a moneylender. Matriculation Miracles shows how an astrologer’s flawed prediction can still lift a troubled heart by simply restoring hope. The Lookalikes reminds us that coincidences scattered across continents and centuries point to a deeper unity of human fate. And in Gauri’s Answer, resilience emerges not as a gentle virtue but as a battle of repeated assertions—of a woman insisting on her right to dignity and independence. Preface:

For some time now, a quiet unease has lived inside me. I often ask myself: when I use AI in my writing, am I wielding a tool or, alternatively, yielding a portion of my own creative instinct? Have I found a companion in craft, or have I taken a gentler, quicker path, mistaking convenience for inspiration?

And then the deeper question arises: who dreams up the central idea of a story? Does the impulse still arise from the human core, from memory, longing, and surprise, or is it shaped by the machine? Can something essentially non-human help evoke what is most human?

Before AI, my writing table was surrounded by dictionaries, thesauri and collocation guides, both physical and digital, because English, being my second language, demanded careful attention. Every phrase had to be checked and every nuance verified. With AI, much of this labour is eased. It clarifies usage, polishes a sentence, explains its choices, offers alternate expressions, and helps assess the paragraph's temperament. In this sense, it is a toolbox that answers back, a partner that can converse.

But crafting a story—the architecture of plot, its heartbeat, its crises and consolations—still feels like a deeply human undertaking. I have never asked AI to write an entire story for me; perhaps I never will. For now, it remains a versatile assistant, not a storyteller.

Yet, despite all these reflections, I remain unsure. AI today can even “humanise” machine-generated text so that students may pass it off as their own. It is a curious development in an age that once relied on plagiarism detectors. We now have machines that write and machines that expose machines that write. It would be amusing if it were not so revealing.

To better understand my own position, I compared my pre-AI work with what I have written over the last six months. The conclusion I reached is simple: I am still searching for a satisfying answer.

This book gathers forty-five short stories, thirty in Part I and fifteen in Part II, each dated at the end. I offer them, along with these reflections, so that readers may glimpse the questions and curiosities that accompanied their creation.

The Head Boy

It was late evening as Mayank doubled back to the guesthouse. Aarohan was fast asleep, and Mayank welcomed such tides of restful sleep to sweep his friend. Just a good night’s rest could bring him lucidity to this extent—he spoke three words or, to be precise, two sentences. However, on second thoughts, Mayank began to feel alarmed. A nap at midday should not stretch up until late evening. He decided to see it himself.

It was pitch dark inside as Mayank entered the room. Not a chink of light filtered through its thick window curtains. For some light, he had to fumble for the switch panel. When he turned on the light, he found Aarohan lying on the floor like a tired child after a tantrum. It was as funny as alarming, and for a split second, he feared the worst. He went near him to feel his forehead. It was as cool as a melon.

‘What’s with you, Aarohan? Why are you lying on the floor?’

‘It’s cool’ was Aarohan’s reply. Clearly, he would need some time to shake off his drowsiness.

Mayank did not know how to react. Thankfully, the worst had not occurred, and he delivered a clear sentence, too.

‘By the way, could you recall anything, Aarohan? How did you get to this remote place?’ enquired Mayank.

‘Aarohan, who is Aarohan?’ he asked, now fully awake. His face, especially his furrowed brow, indicated he was genuinely seeking clarification, not pretending.

‘You’re Aarohan, and I’m Mayank. Old friends, you know,’ Mayank said as he did in the morning. Aarohan nodded inanely, conveying the same monosyllabic reply: no idea, me-no-idea.

Mayank let out a sigh of disappointment.

‘I just had a dream,’ Aarohan announced, sending Mayank into a whirl of curiosity and pleasant anticipation.

Could a dream be helpful in Aarohan’s case? Mayank, driven by curiosity, explored a new dimension. First, he wanted to understand what Aarohan meant by 'dream'. Every thoughtful individual dreams; they are as numerous as the flashes of lightning in the sky. They happen randomly, interrupt sequences, change contexts suddenly, and turn characters into impossible forms, defying cultural norms. Like unexpected visitors, dreams invade our waking hours, often stirring regret. Yet, amidst this chaotic dance of the subconscious, Mayank saw untapped potential. He saw the power of dreams to fill memory gaps and reveal hidden insights, opening the door to an irrational but profound world. Moving away from his logical perspective, Mayank now dared to explore the treasure troves of the dream world.

Aarohan began to relate his dream as if reading from a storybook.

It was Monday, August 14th, 1972. Come the 15th, history would unveil its momentous tapestry. The vehicle of time, carrying us passengers, was all set to leave another milestone behind. We, the proud citizens of the world’s largest democracy, were on the verge of celebrating our 25th Independence Day—the Silver Jubilee. It was a moment for all of us to engage in profound introspection. The largest democracy: not for nothing, the sobriquet was applied to a developing country like ours. Even our detractors had come to acknowledge it! Ergo, a grand celebration was on the horizon, commencing with the crack of dawn. Government offices and institutions would showcase their achievements during these challenging and transformative twenty-five years.

As an eleven-year-old boy, I already understood what Independence Day signified. It arrived once a year when we took part in a morning procession, or prabhatpheri as it was called, to herald the arrival of the day of glory. Featuring a march-past with slogans, it did not replicate a military parade. Nevertheless, it was to commemorate a victory meriting public celebration. The prevailing ethos was ahimsa, which loudly proclaimed that freedom had come to us without bloodshed. There was a tinge of piousness in the celebration, though, with the entire setup resembling sacred morning prayers. Come to think of it, the prabhatpheri was both spiritual and mundane, and it truly reflected the zeitgeist of the 1970s.

Wading through the inundated village lanes, with water barely reaching our ankles, we humbly begged alms of love from the villagers, hoping for some sweet treats like lozenges at the end. However, to our disappointment, our teachers often appropriated the rice offerings we collected, leaving us with only the fleeting joy of the processions. It has been years since our primary-school days, yet the melodies of those patriotic songs still echo in my ears. How beautifully the patriotic people of India celebrated the courage of Gandhi, the revered father of the nation! ‘You alone have bestowed the gifts of peace, progress, and liberty/oh Gandhi, the eternal beacon of beauty.’

However, the following day would be a special Independence Day, marking the grand Silver Jubilee. There was so much to celebrate: we had a victory in a war to extol, having brought a new nation into existence; we had altered the geography so that history promised to be more readable; we had liberated our brethren across the border, so our geopolitical clout was at its apogee. My school was determined to be at the forefront of the festivities. Our teachers planned an exciting agenda to kickstart their celebration a day in advance. It was Monday, August 14th, 1972. A sumptuous mutton feast was deemed fit for such a memorable occasion. After all, Indian villages have always applauded the joys of indulgence, and here was an event infused with patriotic fervour.

However, when the moment came to invite students to the party, our teachers kept it modest. Reason: they had neither the ability nor inclination to fund the non-paying students. But they had a special criterion for my case: I would be with my teachers; as the Head Boy, it was my privilege!

Thus, a curtain-raiser would make August 14^th, 1972, memorable, and I was the only lucky boy chosen to witness our teachers enjoying themselves. There must be one to overhear all their conversations and run their errands. It was my sacred duty to do all that and more.

‘Where’s the butcher, the crook?’ yelled Mr Devkumar, our mathematics teacher. He was addressing no one, yet he was vigorously stabbing the air with his straight index finger.

I stood, feasting my eyes on Mr Devkumar, who was in trouble. He was the cruellest in the brood of tormentors that infested my school under the guise of teachers. Less sure of his geometry knowledge than his marksmanship, he could accurately aim at the head of anyone sitting on the backbench. Once, while punishing a boy at the corner of the rear row, he was so deadly accurate in his aim and so measured in his force that the wooden duster he hurled uprooted a few strands of the boy’s hair exactly along the parting, leaving a deep cut on his scalp. His frail body had no blood to ooze, but he shed copious tears. For a long while, the successful teacher revelled in his self-congratulatory mood.

Fortunately, Mr Devkumar’s attitude towards girls was different. He was occasionally critical of them but refrained from using physical punishment for their mistakes. All the boys recognised Mr Devkumar’s biased behaviour, but the tradition of unquestioned respect for teachers worked in his favour. No wonder this attitude, combined with his tendency to award generous scores to his female students, made him a favourite among the girls.

It was already afternoon, yet there was still no message from the butcher.

‘Now who can kill the beast?’ blabbered Mr Devkumar. Following him, the goat bleated mein…he..he. He was tethered to the wooden pole near the veranda.

That was a tiny little black goat with white patches. The trusted butcher would be his companion on the perilous final leg of his lacerating journey. Only the professional knew how to administer the last pain—the least pain. Who else could accomplish it with such compassion?

My puzzled teacher turned to me. ‘Hey, aren’t you from the lower caste?’

Logic first: the conscientious teacher's rhetorical question made it clear. That I was a tall, scrawny boy from a low caste was a reason enough, so I must butcher a goat!

‘Go and kill the goat. And don’t you dare act funny, you hear?’ Mr Devkumar handed me the leash. His tone conveyed a command of finality.

An eleven-year-old could deftly kill a goat, so why should I fret? I thought. The would-be victim was no man, so it was no sin! And it was far safer to move with the beast than to stay with Devkumar. Moreover, I got an adult job! Giving pain should be better than receiving it, so I began to prepare myself.

But how to kill him? The largest creature I had ever killed was a minnow in our backyard pond, and that, too, inadvertently while washing clothes.

As a vegetarian by choice, my hands felt too clumsy for the gruesome task of killing the dinky little goat. First, I contemplated twisting its head, a method akin to detaching a carrot's leaves in one swift motion. The other method could be to decapitate. I recalled from my history book that kings would merrily behead their vanquished foes in the past. The exciting duel between Lord Rama and the ten-headed demon king Ravana came to mind, with the latter’s detached heads bouncing back to their respective slots! Thanks to the favour shown by a known government field publicity staff, I witnessed the spectacle in Sampoorna Ramayana—the only film I had ever watched in my life. A whirring movie projector screened the black-and-white film on a grazing field. It had imparted an essential skill to me that I could apply now. So, decapitating a goat was like killing Ravana, which would be further likened to detaching leaves from a carrot!

The evening was about an hour away. The August afternoon sun had yet to shed its harshness. I kept plodding across a damp grass field, following the goat. The beast was sure-footed as though he were going homeward.

A voice echoed inside me: ‘Oh boy, the animal processor! Now, you must wind up. The goat has four feet and two horns, but you’re a biped. So, forget your pipe dream of zapping the beast the Ravana way.’

A sense of urgency so heightened that I could hardly look at the goat with condescension. Like a devil, he had a pair of pointed horns. Nay, a sumo wrestler was daring me to defeat him. ‘Wham,’ diving accurately, I landed myself on the animal.

‘Mein he-he,’ the goat did not anticipate an ambush from behind! He had trusted me to take him home, but what sort of action was this? It was disgraceful, a cowardly act!

The intense, funky odour of the beast ignited a predator’s resolve within me. Soon, I found myself on my knees. It was essential to pin the beast to the ground. So, I lay prone on him, my legs splayed out and elbows pressed against his ribs. Then I slowly insinuated my hands around his neck, still resting my elbows on the ground. Next, I gripped his left horn with my left hand while my right hand was firmly on his snout. I was a mere biped, grappling with a quadruped that had begun to twitch vigorously. It became evident that my body weight was negligible compared to my rival’s tenacity. Yet I put in my best effort, and before he could shake me off, I had already twisted his head a full round.

The beast ran away from me. However, he had ceased bleating—perhaps his vocal cords had fallen apart. He was not running straight but moving sideways.

I closed the gap between us and began to stoop low. A dinky little goat weighing six kilos should not beat me. I must grab hold of the truant unless I happen to fall into a ditch!

A ditch? Oh no, there was one. The electricity staff had left a ten-foot-deep pit. Before they had time to erect the pole, the monsoon had made its presence felt. Neither a fence nor a signpost warned us about the excavation site. So, we were heading for a fall into the pit.

Once inside the pit, our game of chase ended inconclusively. Now the priority has shifted: I must escape quickly, but how? Climbing the wall was not an option, as it was steep and moss-covered, offering no footholds. The darkness was rapidly closing in. I felt drowsy and longed for the comfort of home. My only hope was that my teachers would come looking for me. They would not allow me to escape with the goat, the principal recipe of their jubilee feast!

Soon, I heard people talking. Was it a phantom voice? I wondered.

The cloud overhead had cleared, letting the stars shine. I stifled a yawn while the twitching goat reminded me to finish the task. Now that the beast was immobile, he could be killed easily. But I dithered the next moment; it was time to think out of the box and escape. The beast could wait for its due; I would deal with him once we were out of the ditch.

My elbow got bruised as I hit the bottom of the pit. It began to hurt now. Thanks to the loamy soil, it was not a bad fall, yet it still demanded care. So, I stroked around it—a therapy Mr Devkumar had taught us. Though famished, I felt my thirst more intensely than my hunger. How about drinking from the pit? Oh no, it reeked, for the goat had peed there. Drinking my rival’s pee was detestable, even if my thirst was terrible! The moment justified a cry, but the option was not open to the Head Boy.

The goat began to emit a feeble bleat, its pitch rising in shrillness with each attempt. Soon, I heard footfalls and looked up. Someone was peering around the pit! Hope surged through my spine. Perhaps my moment of distress was coming to an end.

‘Head Boy, are you there?’ It was Mr Devkumar’s booming voice. I tried to visualise what the upcoming punishment might be like. Soon, he repeated his call but with a fury vastly amplified. ‘Are you there, Head Boy?’ To give the devil his due, Devkumar was never semantically incorrect. He despised uttering a plebeian word, come what may.

Then, a light flashed on us.

‘Why the hell are you hiding? Come and take your mind-massaging slaps,’ he bellowed.

The rescue team had come equipped with a rope, a ladder, and a bamboo. Strangely, they could correctly imagine that we had fallen into an electrical ditch. Indeed, my teachers were all-knowing godmen!

Finally, I was out of the ditch, but not out of distress. The goat gladly went to the butcher as if he remembered his brief. He hated purposeless conviviality. However, I had no faculty of a goat to speculate what may lay ahead.

Come-follow-me was Mr Devkumar's cryptic command, and I followed him. After a few steps, the butcher took a detour towards the clump of brambles while we continued to trudge forward. Mein…he…he—the goat bleated only for one last time. The silence that followed was eloquent. I realised what that poignant bleat meant; it was as if my bosom friend was bidding me a final goodbye. His suffering was over; his six-kilo body would take abuse no more. As for me, I began to imagine the abominable—the swish of a cane, its stinging thumps on my back and bum, the sarcastic words about my birth, my caste, and so on.

‘Look here, Head Boy!’ Mr Devkumar bellowed.

God, could there be a limit to discipline? I grimaced. Everything was possible because the perpetrator was my mathematics teacher, Mr Devkumar. The plate in his left hand held cuts of raw meat, each with patches of white fat. I could see the shrunken version of the dinky goat on it.

‘Eat this, Head Boy. Here is your reward for the entertaining pranks you played this evening. Munch it.’ Mr Devkumar was smirking.

My reluctance enraged him into using his cane. First, the strokes were excruciating, as if my teacher had resolved to finish his chores before he enjoyed his feast. Then he came closer, keeping the cane beneath his left armpit. Now, his right hand was free to stroke my back. He did so ardently, with a smirk on his lips that soon puckered into a rosebud. Then he retrieved the cane and began beating me again.

‘Eat, Head Boy, eat your share,’ Mr Devkumar held the plate near my nose.

As his cane swished, his anger became evident from the stiffness of his facial muscles. He was angry and gleeful with an underlying sense of schadenfreude—a lethal combination. Before long, I realised that the determined teacher would not leave me alone unless…

So, I, the Head Boy, devoured the raw pieces of meat without masticating.

Ah! Impossible is nothing! Mr Devkumar was far too pleased to see my, nay, his success. ‘Bravo, Head Boy, bravo,’ he went delirious, dancing and singing.

The spicy aroma of mutton curry wafted up from the makeshift kitchen. The bamboo frames protruding from the thatched roof of our school were visible in the waxing crescent moon, resembling the ribs of the anaemic village beggar. Tomorrow would mark the Silver Jubilee celebration of our Independence.

Ah! What a story! After finishing his account, Aarohan fell silent. He remained seated in the lotus position, with his eyes closed and his spine straight, as if he were meditating deeply. Mayank feared Aarohan might relapse into unhealthy silence, yet refrained from disturbing him.

What was Mayank’s takeaway from Aarohan’s dream? He would be happy to solve the mystery surrounding Aarohan’s appearance at Valparai, but the dream provided no clues. All he revealed contradicted reality. Aarohan claimed he was in high school in 1972, but, in fact, he was born that year. He said he had low-caste origins; however, he was the son of a captain from a family whose ancestors were feudal lords in Odisha. About eighty years ago, a branch of that family migrated to Visakhapatnam, and their first act on arrival was to buy land. They were so obsessed with land that they even purchased small hillocks. People believed they had stumbled upon a hidden treasure on their property. They flaunted their wealth by serving tea to European guests, brewed over sandalwood fires. Aarohan’s ancestral house had sandalwood doors, and their gods, made of eight jewels, moved on a golden palanquin. Even their toothpicks were of gold! A dream should turn a pauper into a prince, yet in this dream, a prince becomes a pauper! How strange!

A thought crossed Mayank’s mind—perhaps Aarohan’s tales belonged to a world that could not be reached with open eyes, but only by closing them. Folklore often holds that the greatest seers are blind, for they do not see through sight, but through inner vision. Only when the eyes are shut to this visible world does the inward eye open—the one capable of perceiving truths, sensations, and energies. Unseduced by form and illusion, such visionaries are therefore believed to speak with greater authenticity.

Here, blindness is not a weakness but a sacrifice—the price one pays to attain finer perception. These blind dream-seers stand on the very edge of existence, poised between this world and the beyond, wakefulness and dream, reality and imagination. Perhaps that is why Aarohan, too, gains access to the hidden treasure of an untold story only in that darkness—when he closes his eyes and withdraws from the world.

Mayank reflected further: if this idea were applied to Aarohan, vision could be likened to memory. Just as a sightless person reaches inward insight, one submerged in forgetting may step into an entirely new terrain of experience. Memory is a repetition of the past, but the absence of memory becomes a blank canvas—open to imagination, sensation, and cultural consciousness.

Luckily, Aarohan did not slip into a grumpy mood. When it was time to say goodnight, Mayank proposed, ‘How about taking a stroll in the morning, Aarohan, if you fancy?’

‘Fine,’ gladly replied Aarohan, adding, ‘I won’t mind.’

खोई स्मृति, पाई कहानी

मयंक जब गेस्ट हाउस लौटा, तब तक साँझ ढल चुकी थी। आरोहण गहरी नींद में पड़ा था। वह खुश हुआ—“चलो, दोस्त को चैन की नींद तो मिली!”

सिर्फ़ एक रात की सुकून भरी नींद ने ही उसे इतना सँभाल दिया था कि वह तीन शब्द—या कहें, दो पूरे वाक्य—बोल पाया। मगर थोड़ी ही देर में मयंक का कलेजा धक् से रह गया। आख़िर दोपहर की झपकी भला इतनी लंबी कैसे हो सकती है कि शाम ढल जाए? उसने मन ही मन कहा—“देखे बिना चैन नहीं मिलेगा।”

कमरे में घना अंधेरा था। पर्दों ने धूप को ऐसे निगल लिया था जैसे अजगर शिकार को। दीवार टटोलकर जब बत्ती जलाई तो जो नज़ारा सामने आया, उससे मयंक का दिल बैठ गया। आरोहण फर्श पर यूं पसरा था, जैसे बच्चा रो-धोकर थक कर ढेर हो गया हो। मंज़र आधा मज़ेदार, आधा डरावना। मयंक झट पास पहुंचा और माथा छुआ—खरबूजे जैसा ठंडा।

“क्या हुआ रे तुझको, आरोहण? ज़मीन पर काहे लोटा पड़ा है?”

“यह ठंडा है,” उसने धीमे स्वर में कहा।

मयंक हक्का-बक्का रह गया। शुक्र है कि कोई बड़ी अनहोनी नहीं हुई और ऊपर से दोस्त ने साफ़ जवाब भी दिया।

“तोरा कुछ याद पड़ता है? तू इस वीराने में कैसे आ धमका?” मयंक ने झिझकते हुए पूछा।

“आरोहण कौन है?”—उसने आँखें मलते हुए कहा। अब वह पूरी तरह जाग चुका था। माथे की सिलवटें साफ़ बता रही थीं कि वह चालाकी नहीं कर रहा, बल्कि सच्चाई जानना चाहता है।

“अरे, तू ही आरोहण है, और मैं मयंक। बचपन से साथ खेल-खेलकर बड़े हुए।” मयंक ने वही दोहराया जो सुबह कहा था। आरोहण ने सिर वैसे ही हिलाया जैसे कोई अनसुनी बात सुनकर उलझ जाए—और फिर बस दो लफ़्ज़ बोले: “पता नहीं।”

मयंक ने लंबी साँस ली—“अजीब पेंच है! कभी लगता है कोई सुनियोजित चाल है, कभी महज़ इत्तफ़ाक़ों का खेल।”

तभी आरोहण बोला—“मैंने अभी सपना देखा।”

मयंक का बुझा हुआ चेहरा जैसे अचानक चिराग़ से जगमगा उठा। “अरे, सपना? मुमकिन है उसी में कोई सुराग़ छिपा हो!”

यूँ तो हर इंसान ख़्वाब देखता है—वे उतने ही अनगिनत होते हैं जितनी आकाश में बिजली की कौंध। कभी वे घटनाओं की कड़ी तोड़ देते हैं, कभी किरदारों का रंग-रूप बदल डालते हैं, कभी तहज़ीब के उसूलों को उलट-पलट देते हैं। कई बार वे बिन बुलाए मेहमान की तरह हमारी जागती दुनिया में घुस आते हैं—और पीछे एक अनकही कसक छोड़ जाते हैं। कहा भी जाता है कि कभी-कभी सपना ही सच की ओर इशारा कर देता है।

मगर इस सारी उलझन के बीच मयंक को उम्मीद की एक लौ जलती नज़र आई। उसने पहचान लिया कि ख़्वाब में वह ताक़त होती है जो टूटी हुई यादों को जोड़ सकती है, छिपे मायनों के दरवाज़े खोल सकती है, और ऐसी दुनिया की राह दिखा सकती है जहाँ तर्क की दाल नहीं गलती, मगर संभावनाओं का दरिया लबालब बहता है।

तर्क और हक़ीक़त की सरहद से बाहर कदम रखते हुए, मयंक अब उस रहस्यमय ख़्वाब की परतें एक-एक कर उधेड़ने को तैयार था।

और तब आरोहण ने अपना सपना यूँ सुनाना शुरू किया, जैसे कोई बूढ़ा क़िस्सागो चौपाल में धूप-छाँव तले बैठकर दास्तान छेड़ देता हो।

यह सोमवार, 14 अगस्त 1972 था। अगली सुबह तिरंगा फहरना था—पंद्रह अगस्त। पूरा मुल्क जश्न-ए-आज़ादी की रजत-जयंती की देहरी पर खड़ा था। वक्त का रथ, जिस पर हम सब सवार थे, एक और पड़ाव पार करने जा रहा था। हम—दुनिया के सबसे बड़े लोकतंत्र के गर्वित नागरिक—इतिहास के नए पन्ने के सामने खड़े थे। यह घड़ी थी आत्ममंथन की। आखिर “सबसे बड़ा लोकतंत्र” का ख़िताब किसी विकासशील देश को यूँ ही नहीं मिला था! आलोचक भी मान चुके थे कि यह सच्चाई है। लिहाज़ा तैयारी थी एक शाही जश्न की—जो सुबह की पहली किरण के साथ शुरू होना था।

सरकारी दफ़्तरों, स्कूल-कॉलेजों और संस्थानों को अपनी-अपनी कामयाबियों का प्रदर्शन करना था। उस वक़्त मैं ग्यारह वर्ष का बच्चा था। जानता था कि स्वतंत्रता दिवस का क्या मतलब है। साल में बस एक दिन आता था जब हम प्रभात फेरी में निकलते—छोटे-छोटे गले से नारे लगाते, गाँव की कीचड़ भरी गलियों से गुजरते, लोगों को याद दिलाते कि आज़ादी का दिन लौट आया है। ये कोई फौजी परेड तो नहीं थी, मगर विजय का एक उत्सव ज़रूर था।

उस दौर का असल जज़्बा अहिंसा था—यानी हमें आज़ादी बग़ैर खून-खराबे मिली। पूरे माहौल में एक अजीब-सी पवित्रता थी—जैसे प्रार्थना-सभा हो, मगर देसी अंदाज़ में। प्रभात फेरी आधी आध्यात्मिक, आधी दुनियावी—और सत्तर के दशक के हिंदुस्तान की असल तस्वीर।

हम बच्चे गीली गलियों से गुज़रते, टखनों तक कीचड़ में भीगते हुए लोगों से मुट्ठी-भर चावल माँगते—मानो प्यार की भीख—इस आस में कि बदले में कोई मिठाई या टॉफ़ी थमा दे। मगर अक्सर मायूसी ही हाथ लगती। मास्टर साहब भेंट में मिले चावल खुद दबा लेते, और हमें बस नारों का शोर और प्रभात फेरी की हल्की-फुल्की मस्ती नसीब होती। आज प्राइमरी स्कूल के वे दिन बहुत पीछे छूट चुके हैं, लेकिन उन देशभक्ति से लबालब गीतों की धुनें अब भी कानों में गूँजती रहती हैं—

“शांति, तरक़्क़ी, आज़ादी का तू ही वरदाता,

ए गांधी! सच का दीया, ख़ूबसूरती का दाता।”

वही ऐतिहासिक दिन फिर लौट रहा था—मगर इस बार कुछ ख़ास। रजत जयंती! वजहें भी कम न थीं—हमने जंग जीती थी, नक्शा बदला था, और नया मुल्क दुनिया के नक़्शे पर ला खड़ा किया था। सीमापार भाइयों को मुक्ति दिलाकर अपनी सियासी ताक़त शिखर तक पहुँचा दी थी। स्कूल वाले भी पीछे कहाँ रहने वाले थे! शिक्षकों ने तय किया कि जलसा एक दिन पहले से ही शुरू होगा।

इसी वजह से 14 अगस्त की शाम एक ख़ास दावत रखी गई। भेड़ के गोश्त का लज़ीज़ पकवान—क्योंकि हिंदुस्तानी गाँवों में बढ़िया खाना किसी भी आयोजन को उत्सव में बदल देता है। और यहाँ तो मौक़ा ही था जश्न-ए-आज़ादी का। मगर जब बच्चों को बुलाने की बारी आई, तो मास्टरों ने हद बाँध दी—सबको खिलाना नामुमकिन था। लेकिन मेरे लिए अलग फ़रमान था: मैं हेड बॉय था, इसलिए मास्टरों के साथ बैठना मेरा “विशेषाधिकार” ठहरा।

इस तरह 14 अगस्त का दिन मेरे लिए एक तरह का कर्टेन-रेज़र बन गया। मैं अकेला सौभाग्यशाली बच्चा था, जिसने मास्टरों का जश्न अपनी आँखों से देखा। कोई तो चाहिए था जो उनकी बातें सुने, उनकी हाँ में हाँ मिलाए, और छोटे-मोटे काम सँभाले—यही मेरा फ़र्ज़ था, शायद उससे भी बढ़कर।

“कहाँ गया वो कसाई, वो धोखेबाज़?”—गरजे श्री देवकुमार, हमारे गणित के मास्टर। वे किसी ख़ास से नहीं बोले; बस हवा में उँगली लहराते हुए ग़ुस्से में बड़बड़ा रहे थे। मैं पास खड़ा उनकी सूरत पढ़ता रहा—वे मानो किसी अजीब मुसीबत में फँस गए हों।

वे हमारे स्कूल के उस दमनकारी शिक्षक-दल के सबसे क्रूर सदस्य थे, जो शिक्षा के नाम पर मारकुटाई में माहिर था। उन्हें ज्यामिति से ज़्यादा भरोसा अपनी निशानेबाज़ी पर था। पीछे बैठा बच्चा हो या आगे—लकड़ी का, धूल से भरा वह भारी डस्टर उनके लिए किसी हथियार से कम न था, और निशाना शायद ही कभी चूकता।

एक बार तो उन्होंने ग़ुस्से में डस्टर ऐसा उछाला कि बच्चे की माँग खुरच गई—बाल उखड़ गए और खोपड़ी पर लाल लकीर उभर आई। खून नहीं निकला, मगर बच्चे की आँखों से आँसू नदी बनकर बहने लगे। और उधर मास्टर जी देर तक आत्ममुग्ध मुस्कान में डूबे रहे—मानो किसी “कामयाब प्रयोग” पर इतराते हों।

सौभाग्य से, मास्टर देवकुमार का मिज़ाज लड़कियों के साथ कुछ और ही था। कभी-कभार उन पर तंज़ कसते, मगर उनकी ग़लती पर हाथ नहीं उठाते। सब लड़कों को मालूम था—यह खुला-खुला पक्षपात है। लेकिन गुरुजी के नाम पर जो ख़ामोश इज़्ज़त देने का रिवाज़ था, वही उनकी ढाल बन जाता। यही झुकाव—और लड़कियों को ज़्यादा नंबर देने की उनकी आदत—उन्हें छात्राओं के बीच मशहूर बना देती थी; एक ऐसी ख्याति, जिसे न कोई खुलकर पसंद कर पाता था, न खुलकर विरोध।

दोपहर ढल चुकी थी, मगर कसाई का कोई पैग़ाम नहीं पहुँचा।

“अब इस जानवर का कत्ल करेगा कौन?”—मास्टर देवकुमार बुदबुदाए। उनके पीछे से बकरा मिमियाया—“मैं... हे... हे।” वह बरामदे के पास खूँटे से बँधा था।

वह एक छोटा-सा काला बकरा था, जिस्म पर सफ़ेद धब्बे। उसका आख़िरी सफ़र अब शुरू होने वाला था। इस राह में उसका साथी कसाई होगा—जो पेशेवराना अंदाज़ में, कम-से-कम तकलीफ़ के साथ, इस काम को अंजाम देगा। और भला इतनी रहमदिली से यह काम और कौन कर सकता था?

मास्टर साहब ने मेरी तरफ़ तीर जैसी नज़र डाली।

“अरे, तू नीची जात का नहीं है क्या?”

दिमाग़ ने झट से मतलब पकड़ लिया—लंबा-दुबला हूँ, साथ ही नीची जात का; और यही मेरी क़ाबिलियत ठहरी। नतीजा साफ़ था: बकरे को हलाल करना मेरे जिम्मे आया।

“जा, और इस बकरे को ख़त्म कर। ज़्यादा ड्रामा मत करना, समझा?”—कहकर उन्होंने रस्सी मेरे हाथ में थमा दी। आवाज़ में हुक्म का सख़्त, बर्फ़-सा ठंडा लहजा था।

ग्यारह साल का छोकरा अगर सफ़ाई से बकरा मार सकता है, तो मुझे क्यों डर लगे? मैंने मन-ही-मन तसल्ली दी। इंसान तो नहीं है, तो पाप भी कहाँ? और मास्टर साहब के पास खड़े रहने से तो बकरा ही बेहतर साथी लग रहा था। ऊपर से, यह तो बड़ा काम था—बड़ों वाला काम! मैंने खुद को बहलाया—दर्द देना, दर्द झेलने से आसान है।

मगर मारूँ तो कैसे? अब तक जो सबसे बड़ा जीव मारा था, वह पिछवाड़े तालाब की एक नन्ही मछली थी—वो भी कपड़े धोते-धोते, अनजाने में। मैं तो वैसे भी सख़्त सब्ज़ीख़ोर था। मेरे हाथ इस क़हर ढाने वाले काम के लिए बिलकुल अजनबी थे।

पहला ख्याल आया—गर्दन मरोड़ दूँ, जैसे गाजर की पत्तियाँ तोड़ते हैं। दूसरा ख्याल आया—सीधा सिर काट दूँ। किताब में पढ़ा था—बादशाह दुश्मन का सर काटकर फ़ख्र से नुमाइश करते थे। आँखों में राम-रावण का युद्ध घूम गया—कटे सिर बार-बार उगते जा रहे हों।

हाँ, सरकारी प्रचार विभाग की बदौलत वही पुरानी रामायण फ़िल्म देखी थी—चरागाह में घूमते प्रोजेक्टर पर। वही मेरी ज़िंदगी की पहली और आख़िरी फ़िल्म। वहीं से यह हुनर सीखा था—अब काम आ सकता है। तो सोचा, बकरे का सिर काटना रावण का सिर काटने जैसा ही है—या गाजर की पत्तियाँ तोड़ने जैसा।

शाम ढलने में अभी एक घंटा बाकी था। अगस्त की धूप अभी भी झुलसा रही थी। मैं गीली घास पर बकरे के पीछे-पीछे चलता रहा। जानवर मानो अपने घर की ओर लौटते कदम नाप रहा था।

भीतर से एक आवाज़ उठी—“ओ छोरे! अब तू जानवर-मारक बन गया! निपटा दे इसे। बकरे के चार पैर हैं, दो सींग हैं, और तू बस दो पैरों वाला—रावण वाला सपना छोड़।”

दिल की धड़कन इतनी तेज़ हो उठी कि बकरे की तरफ़ अब रहम की नज़र डालना मुमकिन न रहा। वह मुझे पूरा शैतान लगने लगा—जैसे कोई सूमो पहलवान सीधी चुनौती दे रहा हो। मैंने छलाँग लगाई—“धप्प!”—और सीधा उसी पर जा गिरा।

“मैं-हे-हे!”—बेचारा हक्का-बक्का रह गया। अब तक वह मुझे दोस्त समझ रहा था, घर तक ले जाने वाला साथी। और मैंने? मैंने तो धोखा दे दिया—बिलकुल कायरों जैसा काम!

उसकी कसैली, तीखी गंध ने मेरे भीतर के शिकारी को जगा दिया। मैं उसके ऊपर आ पड़ा, कोहनियाँ उसकी पसलियों में गड़ा दीं। एक हाथ से सींग, दूसरे से थूथन कस लिया। पूरा दम लगाकर उसकी गर्दन मरोड़ दी।

जानवर तिरछा भागा, मगर अब मिमियाने की आवाज़ नहीं निकल पा रही थी—शायद उसकी स्वर-रज्जुएँ टूट चुकी थीं। मैं पीछे ही पड़ा रहा। छह किलो का छोटा-सा बकरा भला मुझसे कैसे जीत पाता?

पर तभी...गड्ढा!

ओफ़्फ़ोह!

बिजली विभाग ने दस फुट का गड्ढा खोदकर यूँ ही खुला छोड़ दिया था—न घेराबंदी, न कोई तख़्ती। और देखते-ही-देखते हम दोनों उसमें जा गिरे—सरकारी लापरवाही का जीता-जागता नमूना।

अब खेल ख़त्म था। असली सवाल यही था—इस काले गड्ढे से बाहर कैसे निकला जाए?

दीवारें चिकनी थीं, काई से भरी हुई; ऊपर चढ़ना नामुमकिन। अँधेरा तेज़ी से गहराता जा रहा था। पलकें बोझिल होने लगीं, और दिल घर की आरामदेह बिस्तर के लिए तरसने लगा।

मेरी आख़िरी उम्मीद यही थी कि शिक्षक हमें ढूँढते हुए आ पहुँचेंगे। वे मुझे बकरे के साथ भागने नहीं देंगे—आख़िर वही तो उनके जुबली भोज का मुख्य पकवान था।

थोड़ी देर बाद ऊपर से कुछ आवाज़ें आईं। दिल धक् से रह गया—क्या यह कोई भूतिया सरगोशी थी? मैंने मन ही मन सोचा।

बादल हट चुके थे, तारे झिलमिला रहे थे। मैंने दबाकर एक जम्हाई ली। उधर बकरा हिल-डुलकर मुझे याद दिला रहा था कि काम अधूरा पड़ा है। अब जबकि वह लगभग स्थिर हो गया था, उसे आसानी से मारा जा सकता था। मगर अगले ही पल दिल काँप उठा—नहीं, अब ढर्रे से हटकर कुछ और सोचना होगा। बाहर निकलने का कोई रास्ता तलाशना ज़रूरी था। बकरा इंतज़ार कर सकता है—मैं उसे गड्ढे से बाहर निकलने के बाद निपटा लूँगा।

गिरते वक़्त मेरी कोहनी छिल गई थी और अब जलन होने लगी थी। शुक्र है कि मिट्टी नरम और चिकनी थी, वरना गिरावट कहीं ज़्यादा ख़तरनाक साबित होती। फिर भी इलाज ज़रूरी था। मैंने कोहनी सहलाना शुरू किया—वही घरेलू थेरैपी, जो देवकुमार जी हमें सिखाते थे: पहले उँगलियों से त्वचा को हल्के-हल्के सहलाना, मानो दर्द की नस टटोली जा रही हो… और फिर ठीक उसी जगह डंडा जमा देना—जैसे शेर शिकार पर झपटने से पहले उससे खिलवाड़ करता हो।

भूख तो थी ही, लेकिन प्यास उससे कहीं ज़्यादा तेज़ हो चली थी। क्या गड्ढे का पानी पी लिया जाए? ओह नहीं! उसमें सड़ाँध की बदबू थी—बकरा वहीं पेशाब कर चुका था।

किसी का पेशाब पी लेना—भले ही जान पर बन आए—मेरे लिए नामुमकिन था।

वो पल था जब बच्चे रो पड़ते, लेकिन हेड बॉय के लिए यह इजाज़त कहाँ!

बकरा अब धीमे-धीमे मिमिया रहा था, मगर उसकी आवाज़ की तीव्रता बढ़ती जा रही थी। तभी ऊपर से कदमों की आहट आई। गर्दन उठाई—कोई गड्ढे में झाँक रहा था! रीढ़ में उम्मीद की बिजली दौड़ गई—शायद राहत मिल ही जाए।

“हेड बॉय, तुम नीचे हो?"—देवकुमार जी की बुलंद आवाज़ गूँजी।

मैंने सोचना शुरू किया कि अब कौन सी सज़ा मिलेगी। वो फिर से गरजे—इस बार और गुस्से में: “तुम हो नीचे, हेड बॉय?”

देवकुमार का ख़ास गुण था—गाली न भी दें, तो भी उनके शब्दों की धमक सामने वाले का कलेजा हिला देती थी।

अचानक टॉर्च की तेज़ रोशनी हम पर आ पड़ी।

“काहे छुप रहे हो? आओ, अपना दिमाग़ मसाज करवाओ—चाँटे से!”—वे गरजे।

राहत-दल रस्सी, सीढ़ी और बांस लेकर नीचे उतरा। हैरत की बात यह थी कि उन्होंने सीधा-सीधा अंदाज़ा लगा लिया था कि हम बिजली विभाग के उसी गड्ढे में गिरे हैं। सच कहूँ, हमारे शिक्षक किसी सर्वज्ञानी संत से कम न निकले!

मैं गड्ढे से बाहर तो आ गया, मगर संकट कहाँ ख़त्म हुआ था! बकरा बिना किसी झिझक के ख़ुद चलकर कसाई के हवाले हो गया—मानो उसे अपनी तक़दीर मालूम हो और वह किसी बेमतलब जश्न का हिस्सा बनने से इनकार कर रहा हो।

“पीछे-पीछे आओ,”—देवकुमार ने रहस्यमय लहजे में कहा। मैं चुपचाप उनके पीछे हो लिया। थोड़ी ही दूर जाकर कसाई झाड़ियों की ओर मुड़ गया। ‘मैं… हे… हे’—बकरे ने आख़िरी बार मिमियाया। और फिर जो ख़ामोशी उतरी, वह विदाई की एक गूँज-सी लगी—मेरे उस गुप्त साथी की, जो अब दर्द से आज़ाद हो चुका था। उसका छह किलो का जिस्म अब किसी तकलीफ़ का बोझ नहीं ढोएगा।

और मैं? भीतर एक कंपकंपी दौड़ गई। अब क्या होगा—छड़ी की सिसकारी? पीठ और नितंबों पर उसकी जलती हुई चुभन? जाति, जन्म और ज़िंदगी की नई-नई तफ़सीर?

“सुन रहे हो, हेड बॉय!”—देवकुमार गरजे।

हे मेरे बाप! क्या अनुशासन की भी कोई हद होती है? मैं मन ही मन सोच रहा था। मगर देवकुमार जी के सामने तो सब कुछ मुमकिन था।

उनके बाएँ हाथ में एक थाली थी—जिसमें कच्चा गोश्त पड़ा था, सफ़ेद चर्बी की पतली तहों में लिपटा हुआ। वही नन्हा बकरा अब रक्तहीन देह बनकर थाली में रखा था।

“खा लो, हेड बॉय,”—देवकुमार के होंठों पर एक सख़्त मुस्कान तनी। “ये तुम्हारे आज के तमाशे का इनाम है। चबाओ इसे।”

मेरी झिझक ने उन्हें छड़ी उठाने पर मजबूर कर दिया। शुरुआती वार तेज़ और झनझनाते हुए पड़े—मानो खाना खिलाने से पहले बस एक औपचारिकता निभाई जा रही हो। फिर वे पास आए और छड़ी को कांख में दबा लिया। अब उनका दाहिना हाथ आज़ाद था—मेरी पीठ पर ऐसे फिरा, जैसे कोई चित्रकार कूची से तस्वीर पर आख़िरी स्ट्रोक दे रहा हो। उनके होंठों पर एक नियंत्रित, मगर निर्दयी मुस्कान फैल गई।

फिर उन्होंने छड़ी निकाली और दोबारा बरसाई।

“खा लो, हेड बॉय—खा लो अपना हिस्सा।” कहते हुए वे थाली मेरी नाक तक ले आए। छड़ी की सिसकारी और चेहरे की तनी हुई मांसपेशियाँ—ग़ुस्सा और सुरूर का यह घालमेल किसी ज़हरीले नशे-सा था।

आख़िरकार, मैंने बिना चबाए ही कच्चे गोश्त का एक टुकड़ा निगल लिया।

वाह! असंभव कुछ नहीं होता। देवकुमार झूम उठे—मेरी नहीं, अपनी फ़तह पर। “शाबाश, हेड बॉय! शाबाश!” वे गा-गाकर झूमने लगे।

उधर अस्थायी रसोई से मटन करी की महक उठ रही थी। स्कूल की झोपड़ी की छत से झाँकती बाँस की लकड़ियाँ चाँदनी में किसी खाली पेट भिखारी की पसलियों जैसी लग रही थीं। और कल... हमारी आज़ादी की सिल्वर जुबली थी।

“अरे वाह! क्या क़िस्सा था!”

बात पूरी करके आरोहण चुप हो गया। वह पद्मासन में बैठा रहा—आँखें बंद, पीठ सीधी—मानो गहरे ध्यान में डूब गया हो। मयंक को डर था कि कहीं वह फिर उसी बीमार-सी ख़ामोशी में न लौट जाए, मगर उसने टोकना मुनासिब न समझा।

अब सवाल यह था—आख़िर इस ख़्वाब से मयंक को क्या हासिल हुआ? वह जानना चाहता था कि उस हिल स्टेशन में आरोहण कैसे और क्यों आ पहुँचा, मगर इस स्वप्न में कोई सीधा सुराग नहीं था। आरोहण कह रहा था कि 1972 में वह हाई स्कूल में था, जबकि हक़ीक़त यह थी कि उसी साल उसका जन्म हुआ था! उसने ख़ुद को नीच ज़ात का बताया—जबकि असल में वह तो एक कप्तान का बेटा था।

सच्चाई यह थी कि उसका ताल्लुक़ उस ख़ानदान से था, जिसके बुज़ुर्ग उड़ीसा में ज़मींदार रहे थे। कोई अस्सी बरस पहले उस घराने की एक शाखा विशाखापटनम आ बसी थी, और आते ही ज़मीनें ख़रीदने लगी। ज़मीन से उन्हें ऐसा मोह था कि छोटे-छोटे पहाड़ तक ख़रीद डाले थे!

लोगों में मशहूर था कि उनकी ज़मीन से कभी कोई गुप्त ख़ज़ाना निकला होगा। उनकी दौलत की नुमाइश यूरोपीय मेहमानों को चंदन की लकड़ी पर उबली चाय परोसकर की जाती थी। पुश्तैनी हवेली के दरवाज़े चंदन के, देवी-देवताओं की अष्टधातु की मूर्तियाँ, पालकी—ख़ालिस सोने की। यहाँ तक कि दांत कुरेदने की तीली तक सोने की होती थी!

ख़्वाब ग़रीब को बादशाह बना सकते हैं, मगर यहाँ तो बादशाह ख़्वाब में फ़क़ीर बन गया! अजीबो-ग़रीब खेल!

मयंक के दिल में ख्याल आया—शायद आरोहण की दास्तानें उसी दुनिया से आती हैं जहाँ तक पहुँचना आँख खोलकर नहीं, आँख मूँदकर ही मुमकिन है। लोककथाओं में माना जाता है कि श्रेष्ठ भविष्यवक्ता अक्सर अंधे होते हैं—क्योंकि वे दृश्य से नहीं, अंतरदृष्टि से देखते हैं। जब आँखें इस जगत से बंद होती हैं, तभी भीतर की आँख खुलती है—जो सत्यों, संवेदनाओं और ऊर्जा को देख पाती है। वे रूप और माया से प्रभावित नहीं होते, इसलिए उनके कथन ज़्यादा विश्वसनीय माने जाते हैं।

यहाँ अंधापन कमजोरी नहीं, बलिदान है—उस कीमत की अदायगी, जिसके बदले उन्हें सूक्ष्म दृष्टि मिलती है। ऐसे अंधे ख़्वाबदर्श लोग ज़िंदगी की सरहद पर खड़े रहते हैं—इस लोक और परलोक, जाग और स्वप्न, यथार्थ और तसव्वुर के बीच। शायद इसी वजह से आरोहण को भी किसी अनकही कहानी का गुप्त ख़ज़ाना तभी मिलता है—जब वह आँखें मूँदकर इस जहाँ से बेगाना हो जाता है।

मयंक ने सोचा—अगर इस विचार को आरोहण पर लागू करें, तो नज़र की तुलना याददाश्त से की जा सकती है। जैसे दृष्टिहीन इंसान अंतर्दृष्टि तक पहुँचता है, वैसे ही विस्मृति में डूबा शख़्स भी तजुर्बों की एक नई ज़मीन पर क़दम रख सकता है। याददाश्त बीते लम्हों की पुनरावृत्ति है, मगर याददाश्त की अनुपस्थिति—कल्पना, एहसास और सांस्कृतिक शऊर के लिए एक कोरा कैनवस।

शुक्र है, आरोहण फिर चिड़चिड़ा नहीं हुआ। जब विदा लेने का समय आया, मयंक ने पूछा—“कल सुबह थोड़ी टहलें, आरोहण? अगर तुम्हें अच्छा लगे तो?” मानो दोनों ही इस रात की भारी बातों से कुछ राहत चाहते थे।

“ठीक है,” आरोहण ने मुस्कराकर कहा, “मुझे कोई ऐतराज़ नहीं।”

Vicky’s Bell

Meeta was only seven years old and already a teacher’s favourite. Even at that age, she understood the difference between possession and friendship—something many adults never do.

Among the four goats her father, Lochan, owned, one stood apart—not by size alone, but by affection. His name was Vicky, a young he-goat bought from the weekly market a year ago, now grown sturdy and full-bodied. He was jet black, with a bold white patch on his back and an oily sheen on his fur that made neighbours joke about whether Meeta gave him regular shampoo baths.

But what truly made Vicky special was the small brass bell tied around his neck.

Wherever he went—ambling with other goats, crossing courtyards, or circling the veranda—the bell tinkled softly, a sweet interruption in the bucolic tranquillity. It announced not noise, but presence.

Every morning, Meeta studied on the veranda with a bowl of puffed rice and dry snacks beside her. Vicky would settle nearby, chewing contentedly, and without ceremony dip his mouth into the same bowl. They shared food, unbothered by human boundaries.

Her mother, Phoolna, objected—gently but firmly. “It’s not healthy, Meeta.”

But Meeta knew better—or thought she did. Vicky was a vegetarian. He ate grass, twigs, grams, chillies, rice particles, fruits, and vegetables. He never pecked insects like chickens, never scavenged filth like dogs—about whose habits Meeta had heard unsettling stories from friends who still defecated in the open. Vicky was clean, she believed. His glossy coat was proof enough.

While the other goats were tied to stakes with ropes, Vicky enjoyed privileges earned by affection. By Meeta’s insistence, he roamed freely—into the drawing room, across the enclosed courtyard. Once, she even suggested that Vicky sleep in her bedroom. That request was firmly declined.

Still, Vicky was never tied.

As he grew past a year, neighbours began to notice. They estimated—without weighing scales—that he could yield fifteen, maybe sixteen kilos of mutton. Bargains were discussed, numbers floated. Nothing was final. That was how Vicky reached nearly two years of age.

Until Dussehra came closer.

One afternoon, Meeta overheard the neighbours talking. They planned to slaughter Vicky for the festival feast. The words struck her like betrayal.

Vicky, she believed, was not born to die. He was her friend—her closest companion.

His bell was more than a decoration; it was a symbol. Every tinkle seemed to remind her: friends are protected, not slaughtered for celebration.

When she challenged them, the adults laughed gently. Dussehra required mutton. They were even willing to pay a premium—fifteen thousand rupees for such a robust goat. Her parents listened in silence.

Meeta understood what that silence meant, even though the formal payment of an advance to Lochan was handled out of her sight.

But how does a seven-year-old save a friend from destiny?

She decided to hide him.

Two kilometres to the east lay a wild field overgrown with pandanus bushes—dense, thorny, untamed. Meeta had seen it many times while walking to her uncle’s village. It could serve as a perfect hideout.

On Dussehra morning, after breakfast, Meeta quietly led Vicky away. She was discreet. Vicky cooperated, not bleating or resisting; after all, he was with his bosom friend. They left before the butcher arrived.

Meeta knew the rules. The goat could not be killed until Goddess Durga was sent off with hymns—the visarjan rituals. That would end by eleven. Only then would the killing be considered sinless.

The butcher had already taken an advance of five thousand rupees. The decision was final.

As they walked, Meeta’s mind filled with terrifying images. Would they sever Vicky’s head? Or let him bleed out slowly? A teasing friend had once described it cruelly—talking of veins in the neck, of blood draining in minutes, even of cutting a goat at the knees while it was still alive. The images sent shivers through her heart.

They reached the pandanus jungle. Vicky found food everywhere and began to eat greedily. Meeta tugged at him, whispering warnings, but hunger prevailed. She relented, letting him eat until eleven.

She wasn’t sure whether adults had noticed her escape. But she knew a small boy named Bagi had seen them heading east. She bribed him with a promise of five lozenges. Yet pleasing his father proved more tempting than candy.

Before eleven, a neighbour arrived at the pandanus field. He was one of the men who had paid the butcher’s advance on behalf of the group. Breathless and urgent, he confronted her.

“Why are you here with Vicky?” he demanded. “After the send-off hymns, when Devi Durga returns to heaven, he will be slaughtered.”

“Vicky is my friend,” Meeta said. “How can I let you kill my friend?”

The man shook his head. “We don’t recognise such friendships. We’ve paid five thousand rupees. Hand over the leash.”

And he snatched Vicky away.

Meeta wept—her loud, broken sobs could not alter fate. She walked home alone, tears streaming down her cheeks.

She knew what would happen. Money would change hands. Vicky would become meat.

She locked herself away in grief, her face buried in the pillow.

By midday, Phoolna came to her. She promised that no one in the family would eat that mutton as a mark of respect for the departed soul. But Meeta remained inconsolable.

Then her mother tried another promise.

“I’ll buy you a parrot, my darling,” she said softly. “No one eats parrots.”

The idea reached Meeta’s heart—slowly. Through sobs, she asked, “Where is Vicky’s bell?”

Phoolna had anticipated this. She had earlier removed the bell and tied it in a knot at the corner of her sari. She untied it, took out the small brass bell, and handed it to Meeta.

Meeta tied it to a woollen thread and hung it from her window transom.

The breeze entered. The bell tinkled—like a wind chime.

Through tears, Meeta listened.

Then she warned her mother, firmly, “If the parrot doesn’t come within a month, I will stop going to school.”

The bell kept ringing as if to chant: Vicky is dead. Long live Vicky. It sounded even more melodious than ever.

Friendship, after all, does not fade so easily. The bell continued to tinkle—as it should—floating on the breeze like a reminder that presence outlives possession.

विक्की की घंटी

मीता अभी केवल सात वर्ष की थी और तीसरी कक्षा में अपनी शिक्षिका की चहेती भी। इतनी छोटी उम्र में ही वह अधिकार और मित्रता के बीच का महीन अंतर समझती थी—ऐसी समझ, जो बहुत-से बड़े लोग भी नहीं विकसित कर पाते।

उसके पिता लोचन के पास चार बकरियाँ थीं, लेकिन उनमें से एक अलग ही पहचान रखती थी—आकार से नहीं, दुलार से। उसका नाम था विक्की। वह एक युवा नर-बकरा था, जिसे एक साल पहले साप्ताहिक हाट से खरीदा गया था और अब वह मज़बूत, तंदुरुस्त हो चुका था। उसका रंग गहरा काला था, पीठ पर एक उभरा हुआ सफ़ेद धब्बा, और रोएँ इतने चमकदार थे कि पड़ोसी मज़ाक में पूछते रहते—क्या मीता उसे नियमित रूप से शैम्पू से नहलाती है? या नारियल तेल लगाती?

लेकिन विक्की को सचमुच ख़ास बनाती थी उसके गले में बँधी छोटी-सी पीतल की घंटी।

जहाँ-जहाँ वह जाता—दूसरी बकरियों के साथ मंथर चाल से चलता हुआ, आँगन पार करता हुआ या बरामदे का चक्कर लगाता हुआ—घंटी की मधुर टुन-टुन आसपास की ग्रामीण निस्तब्धता में एक सुखद व्यवधान पैदा कर देती। वह शोर नहीं करती थी; वह अपनी उपस्थिति का बोध कराती थी।

हर सुबह मीता बरामदे में बैठकर पढ़ाई करती। पास में मुरमुरे और सूखे नाश्ते से भरा एक कटोरा रखा होता। विक्की पास ही बैठ जाता, इत्मीनान से जुगाली करता और बिना किसी औपचारिकता के उसी कटोरे में मुँह डाल देता। दोनों एक ही कटोरे से खाते—बिना किसी इंसान-जानवर के भेद की परवाह किए।

मीता की माँ फूलना ने इसका विरोध किया—नरमी से, पर दृढ़ स्वर में।

“देख मीता, यह सेहत के लिए ठीक नहीं है।”

लेकिन मीता को लगता था कि वह बेहतर जानती है—या कम-से-कम उसे ऐसा ही लगता था। वजह भी उसके हिसाब से ठोस थी। विक्की पूरी तरह शाकाहारी था। वह घास, टहनियाँ, चना, मिर्च, चावल के कण, फल और सब्ज़ियाँ खाता था। वह मुर्गियों की तरह कीड़े नहीं चुगता था, न ही कुत्तों की तरह गंदगी में मुँह मारता—जिनकी आदतों के बारे में मीता ने अपने उन दोस्तों से डरावनी बातें सुनी थीं, जिन्हें अब भी खुले में शौच जाना पड़ता था। मीता के लिए विक्की बिल्कुल साफ़ था। उसके चमकते रोएँ ही इसका प्रमाण थे।

जहाँ दूसरी बकरियाँ खूँटे से रस्सियों के सहारे बँधी रहती थीं, वहीं विक्की को स्नेह के कारण विशेषाधिकार मिले हुए थे। मीता की ज़िद पर वह घर के भीतर भी आ जाता, घिरे हुए आँगन में भी घूमता। एक बार तो मीता ने यह तक सुझाव दिया कि विक्की उसके कमरे में सोए। उस प्रस्ताव को सख़्ती से ठुकरा दिया गया।

फिर भी, विक्की को कभी बाँधा नहीं गया।

एक साल से ज़्यादा का होते ही पड़ोसियों की नज़र उस पर पड़ने लगी। बिना तराज़ू के ही वे अनुमान लगाने लगे कि उससे पंद्रह, शायद सोलह किलो मटन निकल सकता है। सौदेबाज़ियाँ शुरू हो गईं, रकम उछाली जाने लगी। कोई अंतिम फ़ैसला नहीं हुआ। इसी तरह विक्की खाते-फुदकते लगभग दो साल का हो गया।

और तभी दशहरा नज़दीक आ गया।

एक दिन मीता ने पड़ोसियों की बातें सुन लीं। वे दशहरे के भोज के लिए विक्की को मारने की योजना बना रहे थे। एक पल को उसे लगा कि शायद वे उसे चिढ़ाने के लिए ऐसा कह रहे हैं, लेकिन वे शब्द उसके भीतर तक उतर गए—और उसे तोड़ गए।

मीता का पक्का विश्वास था कि विक्की मरने के लिए पैदा नहीं हुआ था। वह उसका मित्र था—उसका सबसे क़रीबी साथी।

उसकी घंटी सिर्फ़ सजावट नहीं थी; वह एक प्रतीक थी। हर टुन-टुन जैसे उसे याद दिलाती—मित्रों की रक्षा की जाती है, उन्हें उत्सव के लिए ज़िबह नहीं किया जाता।

जब मीता ने इसका विरोध किया, तो बड़े लोग हल्के-से हँस दिए। दशहरे पर मटन ज़रूरी था। वे ऐसे मज़बूत बकरे के लिए पंद्रह हज़ार रुपये तक देने को तैयार थे। उसके माता-पिता चुपचाप सुनते रहे।

मीता उस चुप्पी का अर्थ समझ गई—हालाँकि लोचन को अग्रिम राशि देने की औपचारिकता मीता की आँखों से दूर ही निभाई गई थी।

पर एक सात साल की बच्ची अपने मित्र को भाग्य से कैसे बचाए?

उसने विक्की को छिपाने का फ़ैसला किया।

पूरब की ओर लगभग दो किलोमीटर दूर केवड़े की झाड़ियों से भरा एक जंगली इलाका था—घना, काँटेदार और सुनसान। मीता ने उसे अपने मामा के गाँव जाते समय कई बार नज़दीक से देखा था। छिपने के लिए वही एक सही ठिकाना हो सकता था।

दशहरे की सुबह, नाश्ता करने के बाद, मीता चुपचाप विक्की को लेकर निकल पड़ी। वह सावधान थी। विक्की भी पूरा सहयोग कर रहा था—न मिमियाया, न विरोध किया; आखिर वह अपने जिगरी दोस्त के साथ था। वह इतना सतर्क था कि गले की घंटी भी मुश्किल से हिली। वे कसाई के आने से पहले निकल गए।

मीता को त्योहार के नियमों की थोड़ी-बहुत समझ थी। देवी दुर्गा की विदाई—यानी विसर्जन—के बिना बकरे को नहीं काटा जा सकता था। सारे अनुष्ठान ग्यारह बजे तक पूरे हो जाते। तभी हत्या को निष्पाप माना जाता।

कसाई अपनी अग्रिम राशि पहले ही ले चुका था। इसका मतलब विक्की के भविष्य का फ़ैसला अंतिम हो चुका था।

चलते-चलते मीता के मन में डरावनी तस्वीरें उभरने लगीं। क्या वे विक्की का सिर काट देंगे? या उसे धीरे-धीरे खून बहाकर मारेंगे? एक दोस्त ने कभी उसे डराने के लिए बताया था—गले की नस काटी जाए तो मिनटों में सारा खून निकल जाता है; यहाँ तक कि ज़िंदा बकरे के घुटनों पर भी वार किया जा सकता है। उन कल्पनाओं से उसका दिल काँप उठा।

वे दोनों केवड़े की झाड़ियों तक पहुँच गए। विक्की को हर ओर खाने को मिला और वह लालच से खाने लगा। मीता उसे खींचती रही, फुसफुसाकर चेतावनी देती रही, लेकिन भूख जीत गई। अंततः उसने उसे ग्यारह बजे तक खाने दिया।

उसने विक्की के साथ निकलने में पूरी सावधानी बरती थी, इसलिए उसे यक़ीन था कि किसी बड़े ने उसे चुपके से जाते नहीं देखा होगा। लेकिन निकलते समय उसकी नज़र बागी नाम के एक छोटे लड़के पर भी पड़ी थी। मीता ने उसे पाँच लॉज़ेंज देने का लालच दिया और सख़्त हिदायत दी कि वह उन दोनों के भाग जाने की ख़बर किसी से न बताए। मगर मिठाई से ज़्यादा उस लड़के को अपने पिता की नज़रों में अहमियत हासिल करना लुभावना लगा। शायद उसने उन दोनों के भागने की बात, पिताजी के पूछने से पहले ही बता दी थी।

ग्यारह बजे से पहले ही एक पड़ोसी उस केवड़े के मैदान में आ पहुँचा। वह उन्हीं लोगों में से था, जिन्होंने मिलकर कसाई और लोचन को अग्रिम राशि दी थी। हाँफता हुआ, बेचैन, उसने मीता का सामना किया।

“तुम यहाँ विक्की के साथ क्या कर रही हो?” उसने कहा। “इसे फ़ौरन छोड़ो। पूजा-पाठ खत्म होते ही देवी दुर्गा स्वर्ग लौट जाएँगी, और तब इसे काटा जाएगा।”

“विक्की मेरा दोस्त है,” मीता बोली। “मैं अपने दोस्त को कैसे मरने दूँ?”

वह आदमी सिर हिलाने लगा। “हम इसे दोस्ती नहीं मानते। जान लो, पाँच हजार रुपये दिए जा चुके हैं। बकरे की रस्सी दो।”

और उसने विक्की को झपटकर छीन लिया।

मीता फूट-फूटकर रो पड़ी—उसकी सिसकियाँ विक्की का भाग्य नहीं बदल सकीं। वह अकेली घर लौट आई, गालों पर आँसू बहते रहे।

उसे पता था, आगे क्या होगा। सब तय था। विक्की मांस बन जाएगा।

वह उदासी में खुद को कमरे में बंद कर लेटी, तकिए में मुँह छुपाए।

दोपहर तक फूलना उसके पास आई। उसने मीता को पुचकारा और वादा किया कि गुज़र चुकी आत्मा के सम्मान में परिवार में कोई भी उस मटन को नहीं खाएगा। लेकिन मीता का मन नहीं माना।

तब उसकी माँ ने एक और वादा किया।

“मैं तुम्हारे लिए एक तोता खरीद दूँगी, मेरी प्यारी,” उसने धीरे से कहा।

“तोते को कोई नहीं ले जाएगा। उसका मांस कोई नहीं खाता।”

यह बात धीरे-धीरे मीता के दिल तक पहुँची। सिसकियों के बीच उसने पूछा,

“विक्की की घंटी कहाँ है?”

फूलना पहले से तैयार थी। उसने घंटी पहले ही उतारकर अपनी साड़ी के पल्लू में गाँठ बाँध रखी थी। उसने गाँठ खोली, छोटी-सी पीतल की घंटी निकाली और मीता को थमा दी।

मीता ने उसे ऊनी धागे में बाँधा और खिड़की के ऊपरी रोशनदान से टाँग दिया।

हवा आई। घंटी बजी—एक पवन-झंकार यानी विंड चाइम की तरह।

आँसुओं के बीच मीता सुनती रही।

फिर उसने माँ को चेतावनी दी—दृढ़ स्वर में—“अगर एक महीने में तोता नहीं आया, तो मैं स्कूल जाना बंद कर दूँगी।”

घंटी बजती रही।

आख़िरकार, मित्रता इतनी आसानी से नहीं मिटती।

घंटी की टुन-टुन यूँ ही हवा में घुलती रही—यह जताते हुए कि चेतना में बसी किसी की उपस्थिति, अधिकार से कहीं अधिक टिकाऊ होती है।

Dhiru Ma

Dhiru Ma was a widow with no one left to rely on in her final years. Her son, Dhiru, had long since passed away. She was already seventy-six—just a year younger than the oldest man in the village—and, in that sense, the eldest woman there. Yet she carried within her a strange calm, not born of resignation but of certainty. She knew—without fear, without drama—that her end was near.

She was a spiritual woman, and perhaps that is the one endowment spiritual people are believed to share: a quiet signal, unmistakable to themselves, that life is nearing its end. Dhiru Ma did not believe she would leave the world through a prolonged or insurmountable illness. All her life, she had known nothing more than the occasional cold or cough; even in old age, there was no cancer, no lingering paralysis, no Alzheimer’s curse. She felt she would simply fade away, quietly, like a lamp whose oil has run out.

No one would have believed her had she spoken of her end with such certainty. She was still mobile, almost hale and hearty. She drew water from the well herself, lifting the pitcher without help. Only days earlier, she had attended a function at a relative’s house nearby, and people remarked on how well she looked for her age. Some even said she was beautiful—perhaps meaning graceful; her facial comeliness was only redolent of a glorious past.

And yet she knew—this was an inviolable truth—that she would be dead within six months, perhaps sooner.

Once this certainty took root within her, she began to prepare.

Hers was a preparation—not for heaven, to befriend gods or consort with celestial nymphs; not for rebirth, to resume earthly enjoyments; nor for any other netherworldly journey meant to enlarge the soul’s stature. She had no dreams, no voices, no visions of what awaited her beyond death. What troubled her was something far more earthly: what would happen after her death—to her body, and to her dignity. Perhaps she belonged to that vast multitude who believe that the dignity earned in life does not perish with the body.

She knew the ritual well, so she visualised it. Her body would be taken to the cremation ground. Five men—a panch—would set fire to her pyre as she had no living descendants. And even before the flames fully consumed her body, arguments would begin. Who would take her homestead? Who would buy it cheaply in a “distressed sale,” contributing just a pittance to the so-called common fund of the village? Her small plot of land—barely eight hundred square feet—had long been the object of many covetous eyes in the hamlet.

They might not even wait for her body to turn to ash.

The thought unsettled her. She had never worried about her future while alive. But once she sensed her death approaching, she worried deeply about her dignity after death.

So she decided to make arrangements while she still could.

She looked around for someone she could trust.

The schoolteacher was a decent man—the first to notice that she was the oldest woman in the village—and he held her in high regard. Yet she knew society would never allow him to oversee her cremation when “responsible villagers” were present. Her immediate neighbours, by contrast, were cruel and cantankerous. They routinely threw rubbish into her backyard—hair, household waste, dead mice, broken glass. Once, they even tossed in what they believed was a dead cat, after beating it with unmitigated cruelty. Dhiru Ma discovered that the animal was still alive. She nursed it back to health, traced its owner, and returned the pet to him.

Such people, she knew, would show her no mercy after her death.

She thought of the village headman—and dismissed him outright. He was infamous for abusing widows. The village records spoke silently of his misconduct. Worse still, he had repeatedly sent feelers to buy her land—sometimes offering to finance her pilgrimage, sometimes proposing to build her tomb with her name painted in indelible letters, and many such inducements. She knew that the moment she placed her thumb impression on those documents, she would be pushed out to beg on the streets.

By holding on to that small piece of land, she had ensured a dignified life. Selling it—either in life or after death—was not an option.

Thus, she remained alone with her dilemma.

It was her firm belief that she would catch a minor illness within three months and die in the fourth. That left her barely a couple of months to decide. She had savings of ten thousand rupees—her entire life’s accumulation, partly from an old-age pension.

It took her a week to decide whom she could trust. She knew this was not a task that could be entrusted to someone bound by social conventions or compelled to act in obedience to the village’s collective attitude. Somewhere within her, it was clear that only a person standing outside the accepted boundaries of society could fulfil her final wish—someone whom people dismissed as abnormal, or wrote off as a drunkard; a person who, if understood and treated with care, might prove far more sensitive and steadfast than anyone else.

It was in this line of thought that she remembered Vimal, who lived at the far end of the village. Once, she had found him lying by the roadside, drunk and senseless. She had sprinkled water on his face, brought him back to consciousness, and allowed him to sleep on her veranda that night. In his drunken rambling, she had learnt his story: repeated business failures, a motorcycle seized for unpaid EMIs, mounting debt, unemployment despite education up to the tenth class, a refusal to work as a farm labourer, and finally, a wife who had left him, worn down by his drinking.

Another evening—while Dhiru Ma was still testing her decision within herself—Vimal appeared again, drunk, seeking shelter on her veranda. But this time he seemed different. There were no complaints about a loveless wife, no tirades against the government for failing to provide a job suited to his education, no curses directed at the financier. He was drunk, yet unusually quiet—as if the presence of the oldest woman in the village had stirred some restraint within him. And he was ravenously hungry.

Dhiru Ma fed him puffed rice with green chillies. As he ate happily, she asked softly, “Will you do one thing for me, my son?”

Vimal, who was slowly regaining lucidity, asked what it was.

Instead of answering directly, Dhiru Ma said, “I will give you ten thousand rupees—everything I have.”

Vimal stared at her in disbelief. “For what, Ma Ji?”

“You will keep the money,” she said calmly.

“But for what, Ma Ji?” he asked again.

“I will not live beyond six months.”

He asked if she had cancer or some other terminal illness diagnosed at a hospital.

“No,” she replied. “I have lived enough.”

She then placed the bundle of notes—ten thousand rupees—into his hands.

“If no one comes forward to cremate my body after my death,” she said, “you must take the lead. Whatever money remains after that is yours.”

Vimal did not argue. He did not return the money. He stood up and went home.

The next day, he returned to Dhiru Ma’s place—not to see whether she was dead, not to question her certainty—but to ascertain whether she was a spiritual woman, a madwoman, or simply a reckless one who had entrusted her entire life’s savings to a drunkard.

He came again the next day. And the next.

Soon his visits became twice daily. His curiosity about Dhiru Ma grew stronger than his urge to drink. By the end of the month, he no longer felt like having alcohol, not even a sip when offered.

Word spread that Vimal had reformed. It was a village where word of mouth still carried time forward. His wife heard that he had given up drinking. She returned. On seeing the money, she asked for jewellery to celebrate their conjugal reconciliation, but Vimal refused.

“That money belongs to God,” he said. “If we spend even a paisa, we will be cursed.”

Surprisingly, she agreed. Her grievance had been his alcoholism; once that was cured, she was content—even without ornaments.

Soon, Vimal was seen walking to the fields, a spade on his shoulder. No one believed it—not even his wife. He worked as a daily labourer, guarded maize crops at night through the flowering season until harvest, fought off wild pigs, earned overtime, and slept during the day.

One morning, returning home after a sleepless night, he saw a crowd outside Dhiru Ma’s house.

She had died at dawn—precisely in the fourth month after her first premonition.

People argued about who would cremate her. Who would feed the pallbearers? No one agreed. By noon, they dispersed, sprinkled Ganga water on themselves, and went home to eat lunch.

If anything at all were to be done, they said, it would be decided later—after a formal meeting of the village elders was convened.

Thus, no one lifted her body, questioning what the old woman had ever done for them. These questions were rhetorical—not meant to seek answers, only to vent grudges.

But Vimal did.

He hired labourers, paid them wages, cut wood, built the pyre, and lit it himself. The panch—the five respected villagers—did not show up at the cremation ground because they were still busy deciding how to cremate the body. When the fire had done its work, Vimal hired a priest, paying double when others refused, fearing the villagers’ wrath. Finally, he held a feast in her honour.

No one could refuse his invitation.

Holding a grudge against a dead woman now seemed absurd.

That night, after the rituals were over and the guests had gone, Vimal’s wife asked him again. She spoke softly—hesitantly—asking where the ten thousand rupees had come from.

Vimal did not answer immediately. He went to the small wooden box where the money lay untouched. He counted it—every note was still there.

And he decided to remain consistent in sharing the information.

“It was never mine,” he said at last. “It belongs to God. I am only keeping it until He comes to take it back.”

Thoroughly perplexed, his wife asked nothing further.

From that day onward, the money remained where it was—neither spent nor worshipped. And strangely, it no longer mattered. Vimal worked, earned, slept without guilt, and woke without thirst.

As for Dhiru Ma—she had departed exactly as she had lived: without burdening anyone, without begging from anyone, and without allowing even death to steal her dignity.

And Vimal—once brought low in everyone’s eyes by his addiction—found his own path when the time came; not merely standing shoulder to shoulder with others, but becoming a better human being than most.

धीरू माँ

धीरू माँ एक विधवा थीं। जीवन के अंतिम वर्षों में उनके पास सहारा लेने को कोई नहीं बचा था। उनका बेटा, धीरू, बहुत पहले ही इस दुनिया से जा चुका था। उनकी उम्र छिहत्तर वर्ष हो चुकी थी—गाँव के सबसे वृद्ध पुरुष से बस एक साल कम—और इस अर्थ में वे वहाँ की सबसे बुज़ुर्ग महिला थीं। फिर भी उनके भीतर एक अनोखी-सी शांति थी, जो न तो परिस्थितियों के आगे आत्मसमर्पण से उपजी थी, न ही विवशता से—बल्कि एक निश्चित बोध से। वे जानती थीं, बिना भय और बिना किसी नाटकीयता के, कि उनका अंत निकट है।

वे एक आध्यात्मिक महिला थीं। शायद यही वह अनकहा वरदान है, जो लगभग सभी आध्यात्मिक जनों को प्राप्त होता है—कि उन्हें अपने अंत के निकट आने का संकेत सबसे पहले मिल जाता है। धीरू माँ को विश्वास था कि उनका अंत शांत होगा; उन्हें किसी लंबी या असाध्य बीमारी से जूझते हुए संसार से विदा नहीं लेना पड़ेगा। जीवन भर उन्हें कभी-कभार सर्दी-खाँसी के अलावा कोई और समस्या नहीं हुई थी। न कैंसर, न किसी तरह का पक्षाघात, न अल्ज़ाइमर जैसी कोई अभिशाप-सी बीमारी। उन्हें लगता था कि वे बस चुपचाप बुझ जाएँगी—ठीक उस दीपक की तरह, जिसका तेल समाप्त हो गया हो।

अगर वे इस पूर्वाभास का ज़िक्र किसी से करतीं, तो शायद ही कोई उन पर यक़ीन करता। वे अब भी चल-फिर सकती थीं, लगभग स्वस्थ थीं। वे स्वयं ही कुएँ से पानी खींच लाती थीं—बिना किसी मदद के, घड़ा उठाकर। कुछ ही दिन पहले वे पास ही के किसी रिश्तेदार के यहाँ हुए समारोह में शामिल हुई थीं, और लोगों ने उनकी उम्र के हिसाब से उनकी अच्छी सेहत की प्रशंसा की थी। कुछ ने तो उन्हें सुंदर भी कहा—शायद उनका मतलब ‘गरिमामयी’ रहा हो; उनके चेहरे की सुंदरता उनके गौरवशाली अतीत की एक हल्की-सी स्मृति भर थी।

फिर भी वे यह जानती थीं कि छह महीने के भीतर, या शायद उससे भी पहले, वे इस संसार को छोड़ देंगी; यह उनके लिए एक अटल सत्य था।

जब यह निश्चितता उनके भीतर गहराई से घर कर गई, तो उन्होंने तैयारी शुरू कर दी।

यह तैयारी न तो स्वर्ग-यात्रा की थी—जहाँ देवता और अप्सराएँ प्रतीक्षा कर रही हों; न पुनर्जन्म की—जहाँ सांसारिक सुख फिर से उपलब्ध हों; और न ही किसी अन्य रूहानी लोक की सैर की, जहाँ आत्मा की महिमा का विस्तार हो। उन्हें न कोई स्वप्न आए, न कोई आवाज़ें सुनाई दीं, न कोई दर्शन हुए। जो बात उन्हें व्यथित कर रही थी, वह कहीं अधिक लौकिक थी—मृत्यु के बाद उनके शरीर और उनकी गरिमा का भविष्य। शायद वे उन अनगिनत लोगों में से थीं, जिनका विश्वास है कि जीवन में अर्जित गरिमा मृत्यु के साथ समाप्त नहीं होती।

उन्हें मृत्यु-संस्कार की पूरी प्रक्रिया भली-भाँति ज्ञात थी, इसलिए उन्होंने उसकी एक स्पष्ट मानसिक तस्वीर मन में उकेरी। उनका शरीर श्मशान ले जाया जाएगा। चूँकि उनकी कोई औलाद नहीं थी, पाँच लोग—एक पंच—उनकी चिता को अग्नि देंगे। और इससे पहले कि आग उनका शरीर पूरी तरह भस्म कर सके, बहसें शुरू हो जाएँगी। उनका घर कौन लेगा? लेने वाला गाँव के तथाकथित सामूहिक कोष में कितनी राशि देगा? उनकी ज़मीन—महज़ आठ सौ वर्ग फुट—कब से गाँव के कई लालची लोगों की नज़रों में थी।

संभव है कि वे उनके शरीर के राख होने तक का इंतज़ार भी न करें।

यह विचार उन्हें बेचैन कर देता था। जीवित रहते उन्होंने कभी अपने भविष्य की चिंता नहीं की थी। लेकिन जैसे ही उन्हें अपने अंत का आभास हुआ, वे मृत्यु के बाद अपनी गरिमा को लेकर गहराई से चिंतित हो उठीं।

इसलिए उन्होंने तय किया कि जब तक संभव हो, वे आवश्यक व्यवस्था कर लें।

उन्होंने चारों ओर नज़र दौड़ाई—किस पर भरोसा किया जा सकता है?

स्कूल के मास्टर जी एक भले आदमी थे। वे पहले व्यक्ति थे जिन्होंने यह पहचाना कि धीरू माँ गाँव की सबसे बुज़ुर्ग महिला हैं, और वे उनका काफ़ी सम्मान करते थे। लेकिन धीरू माँ जानती थीं कि जब “ज़िम्मेदार ग्रामीण” मौजूद होंगे, तब समाज उनके दाह-संस्कार की ज़िम्मेदारी मास्टर जी को नहीं सौंपेगा। इसके विपरीत, उनके पड़ोसी क्रूर और झगड़ालू थे। वे नियमित रूप से उनके पिछवाड़े में कूड़ा फेंकते—बाल, घरेलू कचरा, मरे हुए चूहे, टूटा हुआ काँच और न जाने क्या-क्या। एक बार तो उन्होंने एक बिल्ली को भी फेंक दिया, जिसे उन्होंने बुरी तरह पीटकर मरा हुआ समझ लिया था। धीरू माँ ने पाया कि वह बिल्ली अब भी जीवित है। उन्होंने उसकी देखभाल की, उसे स्वस्थ किया, उसके मालिक का पता लगाया और उसे लौटा दिया।

ऐसे लोग, वे जानती थीं, उनकी मृत्यु के बाद उन पर कोई दया नहीं दिखाएँगे।

उन्होंने गाँव के मुखिया के बारे में सोचा—और तुरंत उसे मन से निकाल दिया। वह विधवाओं पर अत्याचार के लिए कुख्यात था। गाँव के रिकॉर्ड उसकी काली करतूतों के मूक गवाह थे। उससे भी बुरा यह था कि वह बार-बार उनकी ज़मीन खरीदने के संकेत भेजता रहता था—कभी तीर्थयात्रा का ख़र्च उठाने का लालच देकर, तो कभी उनके नाम का मक़बरा बनवाने का प्रस्ताव रखकर, और न जाने कितने प्रलोभन देकर। धीरू माँ जानती थीं कि जिस दिन उन्होंने काग़ज़ पर अंगूठा लगा दिया, उसी दिन उन्हें सड़क पर भीख माँगने के लिए छोड़ दिया जाएगा।

उस छोटी-सी ज़मीन को अपने पास रखकर उन्होंने एक गरिमापूर्ण जीवन सुनिश्चित किया था। उसे बेचना—चाहे जीवन में हो या मृत्यु के बाद—संभव नहीं था।

इस तरह वे अपने द्वंद्व के साथ अकेली रह गईं।

उनका दृढ़ विश्वास था कि तीन महीने के भीतर वे बीमार पड़ेंगी और चौथे महीने के अंत तक उनका निधन हो जाएगा। इसका अर्थ था कि निर्णय लेने के लिए उनके पास मुश्किल से एक महीना बचा था। उनके पास दस हज़ार रुपये की बचत थी—उनके पूरे जीवन की कमाई, जिसका एक हिस्सा वृद्धावस्था पेंशन से आया था।

यह तय करने में उन्हें एक हफ्ता लगा कि वे किस पर भरोसा कर सकती हैं। वे जानती थीं कि यह काम किसी ऐसे व्यक्ति से नहीं कराया जा सकता, जो सामाजिक मर्यादाओं में बँधा हो और गाँव की सामूहिक मानसिकता के दबाव में चलने को विवश हो। उनके भीतर कहीं यह स्पष्ट था कि उनकी अंतिम इच्छा को वही निभा पाएगा, जो समाज की स्वीकृत सीमाओं से बाहर खड़ा हो—जिसे लोग असामान्य कहें, या जिसे शराबी मानकर नज़रअंदाज़ कर दें; ऐसा व्यक्ति, जिसे ठीक ढंग से समझा जाए, तो वह अपेक्षा से अधिक संवेदनशील और निष्ठावान सिद्ध हो सकता है।

उसी सोच के बीच उन्हें गाँव के आख़िरी छोर पर रहने वाला विमल याद आया। एक बार उन्होंने उसे सड़क किनारे नशे में बेसुध पड़ा पाया था। उन्होंने उसके चेहरे पर पानी छींटा, उसे होश में लाया और उस रात उसे अपने बरामदे में सोने दिया। उसकी नशे की बकवास से उन्हें उसकी कहानी पता चली थी। उसमें थीं—व्यापार में बार-बार की असफलताएँ, ईएमआई न चुका पाने पर मोटरसाइकिल की ज़ब्ती, बढ़ता कर्ज़, दसवीं तक पढ़ाई के बावजूद बेरोज़गारी, खेत मज़दूरी से इनकार, और अंततः शराब से त्रस्त होकर पत्नी का घर छोड़ देना। इसके अलावा भी बहुत कुछ था, पर नशे की धुंध में सब अस्पष्ट रह गया।

एक दूसरी शाम—जब धीरू माँ अब भी अपने निर्णय को भीतर ही भीतर परख रही थीं—विमल फिर आया, नशे में, उनके बरामदे में शरण लेने। लेकिन इस बार वह कुछ बदला हुआ था। न पत्नी की बेरुख़ी की शिकायत, न सरकार को कोसना कि उसकी पढ़ाई के मुताबिक़ नौकरी क्यों नहीं मिली, न साहूकार को गालियाँ। वह नशे में था, फिर भी असामान्य रूप से चुप—मानो गाँव की सबसे बुज़ुर्ग स्त्री की उपस्थिति ने उसके भीतर किसी संयम को जगा दिया हो। और वह बेहद भूखा था।

धीरू माँ ने उसे मुरमुरा और हरी मिर्च खिलाई। जब वह तृप्ति से खा रहा था, धीरू माँ ने कोमल स्वर में पूछा, “मेरे बेटे, क्या तुम मेरे लिए एक काम करोगे?”

विमल ने एक क्षण रुककर उनकी ओर देखा। नशे की धुंध कुछ-कुछ छँट चुकी थी।

“क्या, माँ?” उसने कहा।

सीधा उत्तर देने के बजाय धीरू माँ बोलीं, “मैं तुम्हें दस हज़ार रुपये दूँगी—जो कुछ मेरे पास है।”

विमल अविश्वास से उन्हें देखने लगा। “किसलिए, माँ जी?”

“तुम पैसे अपने पास रखोगे,” उन्होंने शांत स्वर में कहा।

“लेकिन किसलिए, माँ जी?” उसने फिर पूछा।

“मैं छह महीने से अधिक नहीं जीऊँगी।”

उसने पूछा कि क्या उन्हें कैंसर या कोई और असाध्य बीमारी है।

“नहीं,” उन्होंने कहा। “मैं बहुत जी चुकी हूँ।”

फिर उन्होंने दस हज़ार रुपये की गड्डी उसके हाथ में रख दी। “अगर मेरी मृत्यु के बाद गाँव में से कोई मेरा दाह-संस्कार करने आगे न आए,” उन्होंने कहा, “तो तुम्हें पहल करनी होगी। उसके बाद जो पैसा बचे, वह तुम्हारा।”

विमल ने न बहस की, न पैसा लौटाया। वह उठकर चुपचाप घर चला गया।

अगले दिन वह फिर आया—यह देखने के लिए नहीं कि माँ जी मरीं या नहीं, न ही उनके दृढ़ निश्चय पर सवाल उठाने के लिए—बल्कि यह समझने के लिए कि वे कोई आध्यात्मिक स्त्री हैं, कोई पागल औरत हैं, या बस इतनी इतनी लापरवाह कि अपनी जीवन-भर की कमाई एक शराबी को सौंप दें।

वह अगले दिन भी आया। और उसके बाद भी।

जल्द ही उसका आना दिन में दो बार हो गया। धीरू माँ के प्रति उसकी जिज्ञासा शराब की लालसा से अधिक प्रबल हो गई। महीने के अंत तक उसे शराब की इच्छा ही नहीं रही—पिलाने पर भी नहीं।

गाँव में यह चर्चा फैल गई कि विमल सुधर गया है। यह ऐसा गाँव था, जहाँ आज भी मुँहज़बानी ख़बरें समय को आगे बढ़ाती थीं। उसकी पत्नी को पता चला कि उसने शराब छोड़ दी है, और वह लौट आई। पैसे देखकर उसने उनके फिर से बसे दांपत्य के जश्न के लिए गहनों की माँग की, लेकिन विमल ने साफ़ इनकार कर दिया।

“ये पैसे भगवान के हैं,” उसने कहा। “एक पैसा भी खर्च किया, तो श्राप लगेगा।”

आश्चर्यजनक रूप से वह मान गई। उसकी शिकायत शराब थी; वह मिट गई तो वह संतुष्ट थी—गहनों के बिना भी।

जल्द ही लोग विमल को कंधे पर फावड़ा रखे खेतों की ओर जाते हुए देखने लगे। किसी को विश्वास नहीं हुआ—यहाँ तक कि उसकी पत्नी को भी नहीं। वह रोज़ मज़दूरी करता, मकई फसल के फूल आने से लेकर कटाई तक रात में पहरा देता, जंगली सूअरों से लड़ता, अतिरिक्त मज़दूरी कमाता और दिन में सोता।

एक सुबह, पूरी रात जागकर खेत से लौटते समय, उसने धीरू माँ के घर के बाहर भीड़ देखी।

वे भोर में ही चल बसी थीं—ठीक चौथे महीने में, पहली पूर्व-सूचना के अनुसार।

लोग बहस कर रहे थे कि उनका दाह-संस्कार कौन करेगा। बाँस की अर्थी उठाने वालों को कौन खिलाएगा? कोई राज़ी नहीं हुआ। दोपहर तक सब अपने-अपने घर चले गए, गंगाजल छिड़का और खाना खाया।

अगर कुछ किया भी जाना था, तो वह किसी बैठक के बाद ही तय होगा।

किसी ने उनका शरीर नहीं उठाया। सब अपने-अपने ढंग से पूछ रहे थे—उस बूढ़ी औरत ने उनके लिए क्या किया था? ये सवाल उत्तर पाने के लिए नहीं थे, बल्कि अपनी खुनस निकालने के लिए।

लेकिन विमल आगे आ गया।

उसने मज़दूर बुलाए, उन्हें मज़दूरी दी, लकड़ी कटवाई, चिता बनाई और स्वयं अग्नि दी। पंच—गाँव के पाँच प्रतिष्ठित लोग—श्मशान तक नहीं आए, क्योंकि उनकी बैठक अब भी चल रही थी। जब अग्नि अपना काम कर चुकी, विमल ने दोगुनी दक्षिणा देकर पुजारी बुलाया, क्योंकि अन्य पुजारी गाँव वालों के डर से नहीं आए। अंत में उसने धीरू माँ के सम्मान में भोज दिया।

कोई भी उसका निमंत्रण ठुकरा नहीं सका।

अब एक मृत स्त्री से बैर रखना बेतुका लगने लगा।

उस रात, जब सब रस्में पूरी हो गईं और मेहमान चले गए, विमल की पत्नी ने फिर पूछा—इस बार बहुत धीरे से—कि वे दस हज़ार रुपये कहाँ से आए थे।

विमल ने तुरंत उत्तर नहीं दिया। वह उस छोटे-से लकड़ी के बक्से तक गया, जहाँ पैसे ज्यों-के-त्यों रखे थे। उसने उन्हें गिना—हर नोट सुरक्षित था। और उसने वही उत्तर दोहराने का निश्चय किया।

“ये कभी मेरे नहीं थे,” उसने कहा। “ये भगवान के हैं। मैं बस इन्हें संभाल कर रखे हूँ—जब तक वे खुद आकर न ले जाएँ।”

उसकी पत्नी ने कुछ नहीं पूछा।

उस दिन के बाद पैसे वहीं पड़े रहे—न खर्च हुए, न पूजे गए। और अजीब बात यह थी कि अब उनका कोई महत्व ही नहीं रह गया था। विमल काम करता, कमाता, बिना अपराध-बोध के सोता, और बिना तृष्णा के जागता।

जहाँ तक धीरू माँ की बात है—वे ठीक वैसे ही विदा हुईं, जैसे उन्होंने जीवन जिया था: बिना किसी पर बोझ बने, बिना किसी से भीख माँगे, और बिना मृत्यु को भी अपनी गरिमा चुराने दिए।

और विमल—जिसे उसकी नशे की लत ने कभी सबकी नज़रों में गिरा दिया था—समय आने पर स्वयं अपनी राह समझ गया; न केवल दूसरों के बराबर खड़ा होकर, बल्कि उनसे बेहतर इंसान बनकर।

Epiphany

It was 11 a.m. as Malovika reached Havelock. Coming out of the jetty, she looked around for transport to get to Wandoor Beach Resort. An auto-rickshaw waiting for passengers agreed to take her to her resort. She was eager to meet Rajan, the sexagenarian three-ton bull Asian elephant with a reputation for swimming in the sea. He was the mascot of conservation, the poster child of adventure tourism! The celebrity even acted in the 2006 Hollywood movie ‘The Fall!’

Theoretically speaking, an elephant should have no issues with swimming. Given the presence of nephrostomes in elephants, a zoologist would conclude that the species shares ancestry with fish and frogs. So, Rajan had swimming skills latent in his genes. Besides, folklore says elephants used to swim between India and Sri Lanka in the olden days. So, the task of keeping the tradition alive, as it were, fell to Rajan!

In the 1970s, when exploitation of the forests in the Andamans was at its height to supply Andaman padauk (Pterocarpus dalbergioides) to the mainland, Rajan was brought there for logging operations. With training that made him undergo transformational drills to overcome ocean fright, he excelled in swimming. Initially, the drudgery was unremitting; even then, Rajan could endure the grind thanks to the encouragement of his girlfriend. He would swim across the creeks from one island to another, sometimes covering 3 kilometres. As he swam with his friends, the dinghies with the workers aboard would row alongside them. The taskmasters would bark at him while his friends prodded him with an ankush mercilessly—an ankush, the elephant prod.

By the 1980s, public opinion had already built up, demanding humane treatment of elephants in the archipelago. The Supreme Court of India prohibited logging in the Andaman Islands in 2002. As a result, authorities translocated some of the animals engaged in the activity to become wild beasts in the fragmented forests of the mainland. They found meagre fodder in their new habitats, raided the agricultural field, and perished. More lamentably, those who went to the temples of South India had to endure the rigmarole of further training and adaptation. On being banished from the islands’ quiet setting and harassed by the irritating temple bells, sometimes such beasts went crazy and trampled devotees during religious parades. However, in Rajan’s case, the relocation was delayed. That amounted to some consolation for the poor beast, living alone after losing his girlfriend to a snakebite. In 2008, when his owner was negotiating the beast’s sale to a Kerala temple, Wandoor Resort stepped in to keep him on the island. The resort became his new abode. It offered snorkelling enthusiasts the privilege to dive with him for a fee. Now, the beast led a comfortable retired life on the island.

That was all the travel literature said about the life history of the unique beast, the protagonist of the island’s fascinating fairy tale!

‘Fancy diving with Rajan, eh?’ the auto driver enquired of Malovika.

The chap seemed too nosy. Malovika replied, ‘Yeah, I’m game for it.’ She would indeed prefer being apprised of Rajan’s exploits. So, she picked up the thread and asked, ‘Have you seen Rajan?’ The fellow replied affirmatively, asserting that Rajan belonged to the island, not just the resort.

What a profound statement! Malovika was reminded of an ancient adage: Elephants belong to the jungle and the jungle to all. So, who owns what? Ownership implies protection—not exploitation! Thus, the adage alludes to the absurdity of owning an animal as big as an elephant. Unconsciously, though, the auto driver underlined the cardinal tenet of wildlife conservation!

She reached her resort, checked in, and approached the manager for snorkelling with Rajan.

A notice at the reception announced that Rajan had reached his weekly snorkelling quota and was therefore unavailable for the activity. Hence, the manager was puzzled to find someone casually asking for it, as if demanding a pack of cigarettes from the tobacconist. However, he returned to his professional mien in a split second only to say ‘no.’ Their policy was not to ask Rajan to swim more than once a week, but Malovika was too eager to take no for an answer. She revealed she was a top-notch elephant enthusiast in India. Therefore, she would not mind paying the premium the resort might like to charge her for the privilege.

‘Madam, a well-wisher of elephants like you would not advise us to turn Rajan into a circus animal, would you?’ The manager’s response was polite yet sterner than a malicious wisecrack.

Unhappy and repentant, Malovika returned to her cottage. It was pure arrogance on her part to present her credentials as India’s top-notch elephant enthusiast. Moreover, it was a brazen assertion of her purchasing power to offer a premium for an out-of-turn snorkelling slot. So, she would do better to tarry on the island until her turn. Accordingly, she doubled back to the manager to take another chance.

‘I’ve decided, manager. I’ll wait here until my turn. Could you book a slot for me in advance?’

The manager responded politely but not favourably: ‘Sorry, ma’am. It’s booked for the coming weeks as well. You’ll need to wait until the third week of March.’ This arrangement meant Malovika would stay there for nearly a month without engagement. She nodded in agreement.

Then the manager asked her to pay for four people and said it was their policy not to book for an individual, only for groups of four at a time. The total cost, including the rent for her extended stay, was a whopping amount. Nevertheless, she agreed to pay for certainty’s sake.

Malovika returned to her cottage, sat on an easy chair, and began flipping through her favourite picture book, Babar the Elephant. Years ago, she had bought all seven parts of Brunhoff’s illustrated Babar series from Sylvia Whitman’s Shakespeare Bookstore in Paris. She had also stayed a night in the store and written a page of her autobiography. Even to this day, she treasures the memory. It was a wonderful feeling to stay at Whitman’s, where, once upon a time, literary luminaries like Ernest Hemingway and Ezra Pound used to frequent to nurture their muse.

The next day at high noon, Rajan leisurely trundled into the resort with his mahout, the caretaker, following him in tandem.

‘Wow, Rajan!’ Malovika was ecstatic, feeling as if her breath might never return! The tusker looked so youthful! So very grand! A self-possessed philosopher, he knew his life’s purpose—to make the world more beautiful with his presence. His inimitable elegance resembled a magnolia, diffusing its lemony fragrance across the far corners of the landscape. Aha! It was like the luminous Milky Way bedecking the dark firmament. ‘Look! Oh, my dear, how beautifully you move! You’re so prodigious, graceful, wise, and generous!’ she exclaimed in awe.

And she became a poet right away, a songster composing and reciting a poem on the fly: The blue of the sky/ Before merging into the earthly grey/ Here you stand, pausing for a split second/ You make me see what heaven’s like/ You, the divine beast, once look at me/ How many goosebumps have risen here/ And how weightless my body has become/ Look yonder, the charming little flower/ How it sways in a rhythm sublime / You’re my dream, a dream come true/ Rajan, you the dream of millions/ O Rajan, O Rajan….

Despite her cultivated image as a no-nonsense elephantologist, she was swept away by the first flush of young love. As a tidal wave of excitement swept through her, she felt like a starstruck teenager besotted with the he-man of the silver screen. Her feelings were not just intense; they were a kaleidoscope of jubilation and integration, surpassing anything she had ever experienced during her crush on Aarohan.

Boldly stepping in front of Rajan, she chided, ‘Oh dear, don’t you have a moment for your devoted admirer? Your manager stated it.’

Then she went a step closer to Rajan and resumed in a sing-song tone. ‘O Rajan, I dream of swimming in the ocean with you. You’re generous, majestic, wise, courageous, and noble. As the all-knowing one, you must sense what’s in my heart. Please, dear, shall we take a swim?’

The mahout went speechless, wondering, ‘God! The drunk woman has come so recklessly close to a thirsty elephant! What’s going to happen?’

Rajan inched closer to Malovika and stopped only a few feet away. ‘Dear me! How dangerously close she is now! Will the tusker trample her under his feet?’ The mahout shook in fear.

‘Ah, Rajan. You’re so compassionate, ever so indulgent. You know what your admirer needs. You’d hate to see me return from your doorstep,’ Malovika said, raising her hand as she inched closer.

The gentle giant also raised his trunk by about thirty degrees. Then, his prehensile proboscis springing into action, he sniffed the air to gauge the source of the threat. Perhaps he was undecided about punishing Malovika for venturing into his personal space.

Rajan gently brushed Malovika’s shoulder with the tip of his trunk, leaving the mahout thoroughly bewildered. Was it a friendly greeting? The mahout’s professional acumen went numb. A copious amount of Rajan’s drool dripped down Malovika’s shoulder, soaking her décolletage as if she had just emerged from a refreshing pool. The sensation was cold and anaesthetising. Soon, she found herself drenched in saliva, sweat, and secretions. Rajan playfully explored her upper contours with his snout, showing a human touch. It was unprecedented and impish, but then, was it intentional? Was it the beginning of something more intimate?

Already immobilised and his mouth agape, the poor mahout gave a barely audible whimper.

Malovika closed her eyes as waves of electricity surged through the centre of her body. Her skin rippled, sending her into a flurry of goosebumps; her body convulsed, tingling every sensitive spot. They were a series of insanely sharp sensations. Tears streamed down her cheeks to convey no emotions. Slowly, she felt she had lost control of her body while an unfathomable impulse swept over her. Then, at last, she slumped there as the slow waves of calming pleasure lapped her, setting in a phase of fading afterglow.

Finding his admirer flat on the ground, Rajan lumbered ahead.

Malovika continued to lie on her back, calm and motionless, feeling the coolness of her tears evaporating on her cheeks. She knew she had experienced a purely out-of-this-world sensation. It was a voyage to the land of death without surrendering her right to live. If death were such fun, she would like to die repeatedly. Aha! It was an orgasm, then! Long ago, when she was a student, clever friends would try to impart amorous insights to her condescendingly. She would reject them as idiotic, a mere fantasy of imaginative fools. What of now? It was her moment of sudden insight; it would lay bare all those hidden meanings of life which could not be expressed but are lived silently in this life only!

Indeed, she realised what she had always been overlooking.

The mahout breathed a sigh of relief. Rajan did not pull any funny antics, which saved his job. However, when he reported it to the manager, the latter rushed to the scene of that quiet encounter. Malovika had already left the spot and gone to her cottage by then. Sitting on an easy chair with her eyes closed, she was busy reflecting on what had just blown her over. She opened her eyes as the manager arrived.

‘I’m sorry, ma’am,’ the manager said. This was not so much to apologise for Rajan’s so-called excesses as it was to introduce the operative part of his sentence.

‘But why? Is it because of Rajan?’ Malovika queried.

‘Yep. Rajan is not favourably disposed towards you. I think you’d better cancel your plan to snorkel with him. We have no issue with returning your amount,’ said the manager.

‘As you like,’ replied Malovika weakly. She was all for prolonging the afterglow.

‘May I recommend something more, ma’am? The catamaran leaves Havelock at 6 a.m. We’ll buy you a ticket if you desire,’ said the manager unctuously.

Malovika figured out what was playing in the manager’s mind. He wanted to send her packing a.s.a.p.

She was in no mood to linger on the island after it became clear where she belonged and what she needed. For once, the abnegating spinster could not be impervious to her physical stimuli.

Happily, the manager rushed to carry out what he considered best for the resort's interests.
