Union Cycle Works is setting up a 12-week, one-day-a-week cycle mechanic & personal development training programme for young people who are not working or studying and are aged 16 - 24 from the Deptford/Lewisham area. The programme will combine practical and technical training - learning to strip down and re-build a bike, which participants will then get to keep - with hands-on work experience designing and running a fundraising event at the end of the course, developing all-round skills from mechanics to team-work, customer service to organisational ability, as well as a lot more in between.

Those on the course will also have the chance to plan and take part in a longer-distance group cycle tour - where to will be up to them.. For more information about the programme please see the outline. The course will be certified by UCW, who will support participants as far as possible in gaining access to routes into further training, work or education afterwards. We have space for six trainees and are recruiting now - so, what are you waiting for?

Application details:
The programme is due to start week beginning 7th November and the deadline for application is Friday 4th Nov. To apply please submit a written letter or video file (can be a link via YouTube), including your contact details, to hello@unioncycleworks.org.uk outlining:

“Trailblazer” for new Civic Economy

We are delighted to have been included in a new report published by Nesta about the rise of the Civic Economy. The report describes how organisations, such as the Union Cycle Works are "rooted in age-old traditions of the associational economy but using new organising tactics, ways of connecting with people and approaches to collaborative investment."

Our innovative way of funding ourselves through a completely volunteer, co-operative led workforce is an interesting case study for the report and highlights how organisations such as us can deliver significant and meaningful services to a community without being a burden on the public purse- all it requires is some dedicated people, some hard work and a love of bikes!

Here is a little more from the report about organisations like us:

"They show that the civic economy is already a real, vital and growing part of many places, which actively contributes to community resilience, everyday innovation and shared prosperity. They also reveal how local leaders - that is, all those working together to improve places and their economies, whether in the public, private or third sector - can create the fertile ground for the civic economy to flourish and grow. Most importantly, the remarkable achievements of these 25 trailblazers show why we need to get better at understanding and recognising the role of civic entrepreneurship and enable it to turn ideas into action and impact."
