We're in the final week of the fall semester. Should I call it a "hell" week?! No, believe it or not, I have incredibly been organized this semester. Now, five days till the first final exam, Managerial Accounting, nothing pending I have in my school to-do list. This is not typical I guess for a student. But I could do it! YES!

Paper on budgeting

These days, I'm working on a research paper for Managerial Accounting class. Based on the guideline, we're required to compare and contrast various techniques of budgeting, as well as suggesting a suitable budgeting system for given conditions of organizational structure. I was told by some that these kinds of papers are typically given in graduate level. I'm happy though for I would have a chance to do some critical thinking, something that subjects like accounting apparently tend not to follow; at least as an important disciplinal element.

I have taken five courses this semester. Economics, Managerial Accounting, Corporate Finance, Commercial Law, and Organizational Behavior. After having a relatively good result last semester with four courses, now I want to challenge myself a bit more with taking more courses. I will probably have a hard time also with a full time job.

Next Sunday is the first day of the fall semester, and I am nervous just like when I wanted to go to school when I was seven!

The Spring semester 2011 is over. And, I'm sitting in a cafe in Kart-e-Seh, relaxing my mind. I am going to take no more courses this summer. Instead, I will be traveling a bit, letting me see the other opportunities in life I have been depriving myself from, for some time. I'll see then what I will really want in my life...

Osama down: not so exciting

Osama bin Laden is down at last. I heard it today morning, when got an email from the security office advising about the unpredictable situation over the next hours. I do not typically watch or read the news because I don't have the time.

Here, many are happy, and many, who are sad, do not express themselves though. At lunch time, in addition to meals, was Osama's death hot on the table. Some are making jokes about it, while some trying to seriously analyze it. And, some even do not care about it. Or, I better to say they pretend they don't care about it. Maybe routines of everyday of life in Kabul have made us ignorant about many things around us, however, who can be ignorant of a person who changed their lives 180 degrees?

The good thing about this incident I think is this that not as we expected people are too excited, from sadness or joy. They are too experienced in passing such incidents in their lives. They are trying to be calm and see what will happen next.

A in Calculus

I finally got an A in Calculus. I've been desperately studying this course, but no, apparently I have not wasted my time. So, I can still be hopeful of getting a good total grade in this course.

Meeting with the advisor

Last afternoon, I met my advisor to discuss my academics. After three years of being here at AUAF, it is the first time I meet my advisor to discuss my classes, major, degree, and my future career. However, it was a very useful meeting.

I want to finish my BA in Accounting and continue my MA in finance. I think having a background in accounting when entering finance would help me a lot. Math would be another concern while studying accounting and finance. I will probably retake the MTH 110 because it has a bit lowered my GPA.

Businesses on Campus

On Saturday, April 16, AUAF hosted Mustafa Kazem and Zarmina Kazem from Afghan Finance Growth. They presented a lecture on job opportunities in financial sector in Afghanistan. This is the first time a business comes to the campus to know, and to be known to, the students. I'm very hopeful it will continue.

This semester

So far, this semester has not been a successful one for me. Not because of the courses I've taken though, but because of the traffic incident I've had and the issues all around it.

The courses: Calculus I has been pretty hard. It's been mostly because I passed precalculus courses somehow carelessly. And some of the topics in Algebra that I studied some 15 years ago have been quite forgotten.

The rest of the courses is OK though. I've been pretty good at Finance and Financial Accounting.

In the previous post I wrote about a piece that discussed pedophilia in Afghanistan. That piece made me research about this phenomenon and the result is a paper you can read here. I would like to call it "A Study In-Progress" since I do not regard it as complete.

Afghanistan's Little, But Neither Dirty Nor Secret

We read in class a piece from San Francisco Chronicle, titled "Afghanistan's dirty little secret," by Joel Brinkley. It was a sociology class, and we were discussing sex and gender. The piece talks about bashabazi (pedophilia) in Afghanistan. The writer assumes having revealed a "dirty secret" from Afghan culture. However, I must say, as an Afghan and I would be able to assert that many other Afghans believe so, that pedophilia in Afghanistan is not a secret, but everybody knows about it. In addition, it is not considered "dirty." I do not say it is believed to be a good thing, however, the people, who does that, do not hide themselves and their tendency from public; the others, well, don't do it and don't like it either. Brinkley in this piece however does not want to open a sociocultural phenomenon while having a relativist, neutral, scientific manner. He talks about pedophilia with all hatred and disgust, as it is obvious from his title. He also says,"So, why are American and NATO forces fighting and dying to defend tens of thousands of proud pedophiles..."

It's very insulting. Is Afghanistan the only country on the Earth that some people have pedophilic tendencies?
