February 2010 Sales Figures: Audi Continues Growth

Globally, Audi continues to experience growth which comes as no surprise. The company reports worldwide sales of around 75,900 automobiles in February which is a 19.9 percent increase compared to February 2009.

In the United States, Audi sales in February rose by 33.6 while in Western Europe, Audi remains the most successful premium brand based on the first two months of the year. Even in China the sales total for that market was 85.9 percent up on the 2009 figure.

Audi A1 In the Virtual World

Audi enthusiasts who also love playing video games on PlayStation will appreciate this latest news. The car maker has inked a deal with Sony and created a home within the PlayStation Home platform.

This new home is called Audi Space, a virtual world where players can test drive the new A1 and compete in the Audi Vertical Run racing game. The racetrack leads players between high-rise buildings and high above the roofs of the city which are based on the skylines of Tokyo and Shanghai.

So, what's the grand prize of this game? A lavishly designed Audi Apartments which can be found above the skyscrapers of the PlayStation world, with a view of the mountains.

Use of Audi Space, including the virtual test drives, is free of charge for all PlayStation3 players. The only requirement is the downloading of PlayStation Home onto the console.

We love that Audi is taking steps to create more brand awareness in the virtual world. It'll be interesting to see what else they come up with!

Audi A4 - From Passat and Back

Sometimes an automaker will introduce a vehicle based upon the platform of a "lesser" model. Typically, this plan is employed when costs need to be cut to realize real savings. The theory is that the shared platform can be tweaked enough to distinguish the upscale model from the ordinary one. Add in leather, a taut suspension, and upgraded powerplant options and you can probably pull it off. For Audi, the introduction of the all-new Audi A4 during the mid1990s allowed the German automaker to capitalize on the success of the Volkswagen Passat, a midsize car from its European cousin. The plan worked, but it was only a temporary move. Let's take a look at the Audi A4 and its surge to the top of German automotive excellence.

For years, the Audi 80 defined the smaller cars in Audi's line up. By the early 1990s, the aging model was in need of updating and the name itself would need to be changed with the two digit alphanumeric model designation recently adopted by Audi. Cost pressures, however, made the development of an all-new from-the-ground-up model impossible. Instead, Audi tapped Volkswagen and based the original Audi A4 upon the successful VW Passat.

Platform sharing has been common amongst automakers for generations. General Motors regularly spreads it platforms across brand lines while Toyota and Honda have learned that their respective Lexus and Acura luxury makes could share much with their high quality and successful standard brands.

Still, the wheels of autodom are always turning and the original Audi A4 is now in its fourth generation and is built on its own platform. Indeed, the newest Audi A4 shares nothing with its VW cousin and is poised squarely to do battle with the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C Class, the Volvo S60, and Cadillac's Swedish built BLS.

So, what does today's Audi A4 owners get for the money? Quite a lot! Read on:

A choice of three models including a sedan, a wagon, and a cabriolet
Two engine choices: a 2.0L I4 and a robust 3.2L V6
Front wheel drive or Quattro all wheel drive
A plethora of transmission choices including manual, automatic, and manumatic shifters
Major safety initiatives including power assisted safety restraints, head and side air bags, antilock brakes
12 way power seat for the driver
Leather, aluminum, and clothe appointments
Premium 10 speaker sound system
16 inch, 5 spoke alloy wheels

Base prices start around $28,000 for the sedan and climb to just over $37,000 for the cabriolet; all prices are slightly lower than competing models from Mercedes and BMW.

Fortunately for Audi A4 lovers, the German automaker isn't holding still and plans for a fifth generation Audi A4 are underway. The newest model may switch to rear wheel drive and a coupe is receiving serious scrutiny. Regardless of the final decisions, Audi A4 owners know that their favored model will keep up with the competition. This is great news for those wanting a car incorporating German engineering without the Mercedes or BMW price tag.

A Glimpse Into the Minds of Audi Designers

When we purchase an Audi, many of us just think about the final end product. It's nice, shiny, and we look good driving it, right?

But how many us appreciate all the hours that goes into designing that fabulous Audi vehicle?

In this video, we get a small glimpse into the minds of Audi designers, Dany Garand and Stefan Sielaff, as they collaborate on the Audi A1...

In an interview with The Detroit News earlier this year ("Chief Audi Designer Talks About Inspiration"), Stefan Sielaff says this about gathering ideas for design:

"I believe designers should go out of the studio, travel, go to other countries.

There are traditional hot spots like Italy. We always visit the Milan furniture shows.

We even go to Singapore for the fashion shows. When we look at the art markets, the Chinese and Indians are making strong statements now.

For clear and clean product design, Scandinavia is still a place to go, where we draw a lot of inspiration. From an architectural point of view, we look to the U.S., at architects like Frank Lloyd Wright. I'm a big fan of Frank Gehry."

The New 2011 Audi A8 Unveiled

Yesterday the 2011 Audi A8 was unveiled in Miami, but if you weren't there, no worries because here is this 8 minute video that shows off everything this new beauty has to offer...

Audi answered some of the frequently asked questions about the new A8:

Where will the A8 be manufactured? It will be built in Neckarsulm, Baden Wuertemberg, Germany. This is the same location where the R8, A6, and A5 / S5 Cabriolet are manufactured.

When will the A8 go on sale in the U.S.? The all-new 2011 model year A8 will go on sale in the U.S. in late 2010. (simultaneous with the LWB version, which will be announced to the public by mid 2010)

How much does the A8 cost? While we are not prepared to discuss the price of the new A8 at this early stage, it can be expected that it will maintain its relative position in the market, with even more product substance and technology.

How many A8’s does Audi plan to sell in the U.S. per year? The D3 A8 reached almost 6,000 units (5,943 in 2004) and just under 7% segment share. However, the premium luxury segment is under tremendous pressure now (-46% YTD 2009). Even so, Audi plans to increase market share relative to the D3 with this exciting new flagship.

What other A8 models are planned for the United States? Today we are introducing the new A8,and its first model will be the V8 NWB model. Other models will follow to create a full A8 model line including performance, prestige and alternate-fuel variants.

How much does the A8 weigh? Official figures/specifications for the A8 are not yet available, however, the new A8 will weigh about the same as the current A8, even though the car is bigger (3 in. longer, 2 in. wider) and has more standard equipment (8-speed auto transmission, pre sense basic, keyless go, power trunk, etc.) Versus competitors: ~50lbs less than S Class RWD, and >200lbs less than S Class AWD; >200lbs less than 7 Series RWD and >400lbs less than 7 Series AWD.

Who are the A8 customers? A8 customers are highly affluent consumers with a median income close to $500,000, and are most likely worth over $1,000,000. Median age is around 58, which is similar to the BMW 7 Series, and younger than the S Class and Lexus LS. They are highly educated, with almost half having a post-graduate level degree, and are mostly married with few children still in the household. They enjoy traveling, both domestic (e.g. skiing/spa) and international (e.g. Italy/France). Typical publications that they enjoy include the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, The Economist and Barron’s.

Johan de Nysschen Understands Success

Recently Johan de Nysschen, president of Audi's U.S. division, sat down with Time Magazine to talk about the current state of the company and clean diesel.

I must give the company credit for rising up the ranks to become one of the top-selling luxury brands in the U.S. Their marketing efforts these past few years have certainly paid off.

I like when Nysschen says:

"But we want to be the most successful luxury brand on a basis of brand image, on a basis of reputation and ownership experience — if you get all of those things right, sales performance will follow...

For most companies, it's all about the bottom-line. I appreciate that Nysschen understands that success isn't based on sales alone. Your customers need to have a good experience with the company.

Will Audi Remain the Best-Performing Luxury Brand?

Audi continues to wow us with the increase in sales. This week the company reported October sales in the U.S. of 7,358 luxury performance cars and SUVs.

Below is a chart showing a comparison of sales in October 2009 versus October 2008 for each Audi model...

The U.S. isn't the only country that Audi is doing well in. Audi even expects to surpass German's sales by 2012 or 2013. Add in the popularity of Audi vehicles in the South Asian market and you've got a recipe for a very successful year.

Will Audi remain the best-performing luxury brand with regard to year-over-year sales performance for year-to-date 2009? We would like to think so!

The Future of Audi Starts With the Audi A3 TDI

Audi Buzz: R8 Spyder

As someone who lives in California with its year-round warm weather and bright, sunny days, a convertible vehicle is ideal for just about any day of the week. But not just any convertible...the Audi R8 Spyder will work just fine!

The Spyder received quite a bit of buzz on Twitter and the internet this past week when it was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show.

We must agree with CarScoop and say that the Spyder looks great in white. Red is OK, but black would be smokin'.

Audi Q7 Eye Candy

The other day as we were walking through the mall parking lot, my dad spotted an Audi Q7.

"Wow! That's a nice-looking car!" he says.

This is coming from a man who rarely appreciates a European car - although we did have a Volkswagen van back in the 80's.

I turned to look at the bright white vehicle that stood out in the sea of SUV's in the parking lot. It sure did look real good in person. I've seen the Q7 in a showroom, but never paid much attention to it.

And speaking of the Audi Q7, Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen recently gave a talk about the company’s clean diesel TDI engines which drastically reduce the need for petroleum products, light aluminum body designs, vibration dampeners to ensure the car effectively uses all energy it develops and smaller, and high-performance engines that require less fuel to perform.

Audi News: July 2009 Sales and Highlights

Yesterday Audi released figures for July sales, and despite the current sales climate for most dealerships, Audi outperformed its imported luxury car competitors with some Audi models setting 2009 monthly records, including the Audi A8, Audi A3, Audi A4 Avant and Audi TT Coupe.

Highlights for July:

TDI clean diesel technology constitutes a substantial 28% of total Audi Q7 July sales

High demand for the Audi Q5 continues with sales of 1,023 vehicles in July

The Audi A8 and Audi A3 are among models that set a 2009 monthly record

Audi dealerships did see an increase in showroom traffic during July with the launch of the federal Car Allowance Rebate System, commonly referred to as CARS or Cash-for-Clunkers. But completed sales transactions attributable to CARS weren’t as significant as they were for the mass-market automotive brands.

Audi also continued its public awareness campaign touting the benefits of TDI clean diesel, which translated into interest and sales at dealerships. In its third full month of sales, TDI clean diesel made up 28% of Q7 sales.

Audi A3 - The Perfect High End Family Car

The infamous German auto maker Audi launched its small family car Audi A3 for the first time in the year 1996. A3 has been released in two generations, and these cars are closely related to the Touran, Skoda Octavia, Audi TT, Caddy, Seat Toledo and Volkswagen Golf, Seat Leon and the likes of them, as they all share the Volkswagen's A Platform.

The first generation model named A3 was launched in the European automobile market in 1966. It looked like a sporty car because of its three door hatch back body. The engine of this car was configured as Inline Four Cylinder. At the beginning of 1999, Audi launched two other models that consisted of better quality than the previous ones. One of them was 1.9 TDI Diesel Engine with variable Geometry Turbocharger and Unit Injector PD Technology. The other one was 1.8 with a power transmission of 177 bhp.

In the year 1999, for the first time Audi was forced to fulfill the demands according to market. For this reason, company made some quality and had to look out for other possibilities to make appropriate changes to its previous versions of cars. This new version included a variation of six speed manual gear-boxes with 177 bhp in 1.8L turbo engine and 129 bhp in 1.9 TDI.

Some of the other facilities incorporated in the A3 series include Brake Force Distribution Computer, Transaction Control and Electronic Stability Program. The marketing of Audi A3 was stopped in Europe at the beginning of 2003, but it continued it's selling in some of the developing countries.

"Diesel Is No Longer a Dirty Word"

Is clean diesel the fuel of the future?

Well, according to Audi it is. This article at Business Week sums up the vision that Audi has for automobiles: "Clean Diesel Is Coming! Clean Diesel Is Coming!"

According to Audi of America:

"Diesel is no longer a dirty word. If one-third of Americans drove clean diesel, we'd reduce our dependence on foreign oil by 1.5 million barrels a day."

In the video below, America's dependence on foreign oil is chronicled from the 1960's crisis to modern day. Diesel makes a comeback with the introduction of Audi's TDI clean diesel engine.

The Audi A5 Goes Beautiful

The internet is buzzing with news about the new Audi A5 Sportback. Audi describes it "as emotional and elegant as a coupe, as comfortable as a sedan, and as practical as an Avant". Top Gear wonders if the A5 is just the coupe version of the A4.

The A5 Sportback will start rolling into Audi dealerships in September. The car will be open for ordering with an entry price of EUR 36,050 for the 2.0 TDI version. A version with an even more attractive price will follow in the middle of 2010. This will make the A5 Sportback the entry model for the A5 model range.

Audi Redesigns USA Website

Today Audi announced the launch of their newly updated Audi USA website. Here's a snippet of the press release:

...The next generation website integration is part of an ongoing commitment to build the brand and capture additional market share. By utilizing the latest computer graphics interface (CGI), the website offers dynamic perspectives of Audi models impossible to experience with traditional video or still photography. This allows for a more intuitive, consumer friendly online environment.

The site is designed to appeal to a wide variety of consumer interests. The site’s advanced technology components speak directly to the owner evangelists, ensuring they remain engaged and enthusiastic. Research Findings on Audi Drivers

A new breed of driver is dominating British roads. These drivers, termed ‘petrosexuals’, are not identified by the cars they drive, but by their boots full of shopping and the rock anthems they sing along to.

A study into British driving habits, released by Carmony.co.uk, shows that unlike outdated preconceptions, women and male drivers are now seen to be equals at the wheel, resulting in a new era of ‘petrosexual’ drivers. Women are also edging in on men in the car knowledge stakes, with 57% of women saying they know a coupe from a hatchback, compared to almost two thirds of men (65%). However, BMW drivers seem to be the most aware of what’s under the bonnet, with one in five (20%) saying that they have a similar knowledge to Jeremy Clarkson himself.

Women are still more likely to name their cars, with almost one in five (17%) naming their ‘Fifi Fiesta’ or ‘Andy Audi’, compared to just 12% of men. Renaults are the most likely vehicle to be named, with 20% christened by their owners. ‘Tommy Toyotas’ however, are few and far between, and are the least likely to be given the human touch (12%).

Here are some interesting statistics about Audi drivers that were also discovered in the study:

The overall Audi driver’s favourite singalong track is ‘Queen - don’t stop me now’
Audi drivers most likely to have 10 shopping bags in the boot
Male Audi drivers are most likely to be wearing loose boxer shorts
