I have recently put up a photo page on my site. The photo page has been powered by my flickr image and flogr application. Flogr is application that allows one to integrate flickrs images into their website using Flickr API. I have wrote about it and other tools here.

Well, its been quite a while since I wrote about my cook exploration. Here is present to you my latest in the list and it is Vegetarian dish know as Dhal Fry. Dhal is a standard dish among the veg crowd.This might not be new to everyone but the preparation method varies person to person. Here I present to you what I have tried.

Ingredient-

  • 1 cup of tuvar dhal (lentils)
  • 1 large cut onion
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp chille powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • 3/4 cup yogurt
  • 3 pcs cilantro
  • 2 cup of water

Instructions-

The preparation is quite simple.

  • Cook the dhal in pressure cooker with water.
  • In another pan saute the onions until the color changes.
  • Add the spices and coconut. Cook it for few minutes.
  • Add the dhal along with yogurt to this mixture and cook it for 5-8 minutes in low temperature.
  • Now garnish with cilantro and few coconut shreds.

Now we have delicious dhal fry which will go well with rice.

I always wanted to own an advanced digital camera. I have been thinking for a while and I have been annoying some of my friends (Chris, Sailesh and Amir) who are really good at photography. Finally I decided to purchase Panasonic Lumix FZ50 (goldcoster’s Lumix review helped me make a decision too). I ordered the camera couple of days back and now I have it in my hands! I’m more excited to try it out, so wait for more detailed review!

With new camera coming in I’m planning to start a photo blog of my own. Now I’m looking for better platform for photo blogging. I’m currently trying to setup WordPress + Flickr photo blog. If you have any better suggestion for the photo blogging platform, please suggest me.

GmailThis is in response to Mayank’s post on “10 reasons why I like gmail” and in support to Nirmal’s view on “3 reasons why I don’t like gmail“. I’m a fan of Yahoo Mail till now and not used with Gmail yet. I use Gmail as secondary though. I might be little defending on this post. I wanted to try writing a defending post. Mayank was my first victim (hope you don’t take it personally, as you’re my guru) . Let me see how this works out. Please leave your comments!

1. User Interface Customization

UI customization is really important when it comes to an end user application. Everyone end user will have their own preference when it comes to color scheme selection. I may love blue as Google but there are people out there who loves black, green etc., It would have been great if Gmail allowed me to play with my own color schemes rather than having a same blue interface every where around Google Apps. I either didn’t see any changes to the UI much after initial release.

2. Labels instead of Folders

Labels are indeed nice concept but it can’t win by itself. Lets consider analogy in bloggers term, if Folders are for Categories then Labels are for tags. If both worked together would look great but tag alone will look awkward. I love folders since I can define the hierarchy by the way I want. It makes organizing emails much easier.

3. Usability

I believe when it comes to usability drag and drop is a great feature. You can’t expect all users to be advanced user; there will be definitely novice users who will look for drag and drop feature. Only advanced users would be able to play well with shortcut.

4. POP / SMTP support

Well, when people talk Gmail as web mail system, I don’t buy why they need a POP /
SMTP support. POP / SMTP can’t be used well with Web email system. If Gmail had IMAP support then it is truly a great feature. IMAP will allow me to work parallel with both email client and web email. Even if POP/ SMTP is important to you, Gmail is not only product that supports POP.

5. Multiple Accounts

If I’m completely satisfied with Gmail, it doesn’t demand me adding more accounts. I don’t have much to comment on this, I leave it to you J

6. Messenger Integration

Messenger integration with email system is cool. But think about this scenario, if I don’t have friends in Google Talk (say if I use AIM); what is the use of having it integrated? This can’t be a buying point again. It is a negative when I think about my productivity 🙂

7. Advertisement

Wow, everyone needs to learn from Google on it advertising strategy. It might have not have banner ads in the top. It covers the left side of all messages with text ads. More over it had the clip ads in the top. Google places more and more self-promotion wherever possible. Do you still have room for more ads?

8. Google Office Integration

Again, I hate this self-promotion campaign. I’m a fan of ZOHO office. How do I open the document then ZOHO office? I would personally prefer to download the document and view in client rather than using Google office.

9. Spam Control

Honestly, do you think Gmail controls all spam? I would not agree, I receive SPAM emails in my Inbox but not high number as I get in SPAM box. There is no service till date comes with complete control for SPAM. They are improving a lot though.

10. UNDO Feature

Sound interesting idea, but does it really work? Was this feature missing in other email providers? Very well No, this feature is available with all service. But they don’t have button to click on, you need to go find the deleted items in Trash box. This is really good point to consider in usability, but not a buying point.

Do you really have these as your buying points?

BTW, did I miss to tell you Gmail really rocks though 🙂

A week back I ordered photo prints with Picsquare. I have heard back from my parents that they have received the prints. I’m extremely happy with their service and I will give thumbs up to them. Well done guys. The photo quality was good and they have met the delivery time as well.

Here is my feedback with Picsqaure.

  • Order process is simple
  • Good Service and Nice quality prints
  • Nice promotional offers (like referral benefits and gift coupons)
  • Prompt with delivery; they made within estimated delivery date.
  • Integration with Flickr

Improvements,

These are the possible area where they can improve on and these points are based on my personal opinion.

  • The site response time is comparatively slow; they need to work on it.
  • Tagging, it doesn’t solve the purpose in Picsqare. Tags are meant for managing things easy. With Picsqare managing tags itself it pretty hard. They need to come up with niche tagging interface and make managing them easier.
  • Multi upload feature allows you to tag photos but it tags all photo with only single tag. I don’t get an option to enter tag for each photo.
  • Overall interface can be changed; didn’t meet Web 2.0 standards
  • Few photo management options can be added like cropping, rotate etc.
  • More customization is required when it comes to Photo gifts.
  • More integration with other photo sharing service like Picasa etc.

I might have left out few; I will keep updating the list. If Picsqare is able to overcome its shortcomings, it can capitalize over its competitors like itasveer

Finally after reading lot of reviews and comparison about online photo printing service in India. I have decided to opt for Picsqare to send some recent photos to my family back in India. I remember Christelle introduced me to this sometime back; thank you.

Picsquare Overview

Picsquare is an online photo sharing and printing site based out of Bangalore. They have a very simple user interface which they need to improve. This site is been started up young entrepreneur Indians Manish and Kartik. Printing photos with them is simple as brewing hot coffee 🙂

Quick Reasons

Even there were lot of other options to try. These are the options which made me to choose Picsquare.

  • I aways like to give thumbs up to young entrepreneurs
  • I wanted to give a try basically to online printing service in India
  • I had 25 credits in my Picsqare account 🙂
  • I love offers and they were running summer offer this time 🙂
  • I wanted to pay simple and they had paypal.

BTW, the photos I have ordered has been printed already and they currently in shipped status. More to come about Picsqaure once I get feed back from my parents. Stay tuned!

Lately, there is lot of hype created around DLF IPO issue. The IPO was released this Monday and the issue price is overpriced as expected.

These include development of innovative business strategies, strengthening its professional resources and driving market penetration with an ear-to-the-ground approach that is adaptive to local market needs.

Issue period : Between June 11, 2007 and June 14, 2007
Issue size : 175,000,000 (10.27% diluted capital of the company)
Listing on : BSE and NSE
Face Value : Rs.2
Method : 100% book building
Issue Price : Rs.500 to Rs.550 (250 to 275 times F.V.)
Market Lot : 10 shares
Minimum : 10 shares
R.I. Cap : Rs.100,000 maximum

Most of the investment advisor’s suggest to apply. However, the issue is overpriced for short-term. Investors looking for long-term benefits can apply.

Update: The issue is over subscribed already in QIB segment. The retailer segment also would get oversubscribed so be choosy in investing small amounts.
