Here is a wonderful version of 'Our Day Will Come' by Daryl Hall on Live From Daryl's House - Episode 19. Daryl's cover is out of nowhere but a welcomed surprise. He adds a great new dimension to a classic song while preserving it's original essence and elegance.

The song was originally done by Ruby & The Romantics and later covered by many others like Nancy Willson in 1964 and Franki Vallie in 1975.

"Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" Free Press and shameless plugs about your new record company that is. I won't comment too much on the death of Michael Jackson except for the interview by his dad on the red carpet at the BET Awards show Sunday night.

He starts out in a very odd and strange way by saying he was "Great!". Now maybe chalk it up to shock at the loss of his son. But I think a part of it has to do with him being so accustomed to having to be on Que all the time that it was hard for him to separate the show from reality. Yes I believe he's very sad and what parent wouldn't be? Even those who treat their kids like circus animals and turn them into a money making machine probably has some parental tendencies left in them.

But where it gets really weird is about 3:17 into the interview when he starts promoting his record label. That's right, he introduces a long time friend and partner who then starts to brag about distribution via Blue Ray.

Things that make you go hmmmmm.......

'Wishing Well' is one of those songs that makes more sense as it gets older, or I should say as I get older, than when it first was released. Or maybe I just like it better when Daryl Hall and Matt Nathanson do it.

In any event, here is a great take on a good song 'Wishing Well'. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today for this thing called life..." In July 2009 it will be 25 years ago since 'Let's Go Crazy' was atop of the charts and Purple Rain the movie was the talk of the town.

So if you remember actually buying Purple Rain on record or tape then consider this Blog entry as your official welcome into middle age. Don't feel too bad because as of June 2009 Prince is about to have double hip replacement surgery.

Actually, we're not middle age. We're just old enough to see the other side, but still young enough to be passionate about the girls and boys we used to be.

Nonetheless, it's amazing to me to find that after 25 years Prince's epic album is as brilliant and relevant as ever. And no that's not nostalgia talking. Prince is just as popular and respected today as much as in "back in the day".

Here is a live video of 'Let's Go Crazy'. So for the 25th anniversary of Purple Rain, break out your old tapes and vinyls. Rent the movie and remember the days when music had, well, instruments and meaningful lyrics.

Finally, for the mid 30's something group with screaming kids in the background just remember "If the Elevator tries to break you down...GO CRAZY!"

Guitar Hero

I remember back in the day when being a Guitar Hero meant playing an actual guitar, not a video game. Well, called me old fashion but here's my version of Guitar Hero. It's Steve Vai playing a live version of 'Tender Surrender'. He sits in the Pantheon of guitar legends from a time when a guitar solo meant something and debates formed over who was better - Eddie Van Halen or Randy Rhodes?

So, sit back and reminisce about the good ol' daze of Rock-n-Roll to the shredding sounds of Steve Vai.

Chris Rea - Overlooked and under rated

British born singer, songwriter and guitarist Chris Rea unfortunately has achieved moderate success here in the U.S. If you're a music savant then you know who he is. If you are not a savant and just a connoisseur of music then you owe it to yourself to discover what his music is about.

'On the Beach' is a rich sultry song that captures the essence of summer love so well that you can actually smell the beach air when the song plays. The video is one of the most complementary videos a song can have as well.

Some of his other great songs include 'Josephine', 'Fool if You Think It's Over' and 'Looking for the Summer'. But for now, check out 'On the Beach' and let me know what you think.

If you truly want to see the genius and talent of Daryl Hall then check out when he sings lead vocals for Finger 11. That's right, on his groundbreaking website Live From Daryl's Hous e shows why he still is the probably the most gifted singer / song writer of the last 30 years. Upon learning that the frontman for Finger 11 couldn't join the rest of the band for the gig Daryl had to step in last minute.

Here is Daryl leading them for the great song If only Sammy Hagar were this good after replacing David Lee Roth then Hard Rock might have survived the 80's.
