From pneumonia in January, to a torn annulus in May...the year has been a rock and roll Roller-coaster Ride! 4.The gift of green:
Orchids, pretty indoor plants, stag horn ferns, or medicinal herbs...

5.Parents with college students:

6.Support your local favorite neighborhood musicians: buy their c-d.

7. I-tunes gift certificate, or burn your own compilation and distribute accordingly. :)

8. Hostess gift. Remember how much it costs to feed the ENTIRE family on Christmas Day and be sure to honor her/him with something for their hard work. Bar towels, oven-mitts, bake-ware, serving platters, plant, flowers, chocolate....etc.

Got to have it for yourself, or by it for your tragically-musically-hip, loved one:
The Big Payback, by Dan Charnas. (I ordered mine today!)

While listening to the interview done by Terry Gross with writer Dan Charnas about Charnas' book that chronicles the history of Hip-Hop, I actually started to cry, well, I welled-up. This great interview also played samples of some old-school hip hop by The Sugarhill Gang, Run DMC, and other great artists from "Back in the Day," and it brought back so many great memories. Man, this music really stands the test of time, it was so ground breaking in the 80's and still makes you want to move and party today.

To learn about the inside story of the beginnings of Hip-Hop and follow the creative explosion of the movers and shakers in the Hip-Hop industry like Sylvia Robinson Russell Simmons, Rick Ruben and others is a great journey.

Your music lover will really enjoy this read. The Big Payback

Stunning and quite poignant....

I found a few clippings, saved for many years and tucked away in a box of old seamed stockings.
The pieces of newspaper, photos taken from magazines, and writings were all about children, quite telling, since the owner who saved these pieces of ephemera never had children.

Maybe as a younger woman, she wished to have kids but never did, but saved little odds and ends about babies and children and stashed them away into her lingerie drawer, thinking that one day she could use them and refer to them as needed.

Here is a prayer taken from a newspaper clipping that she saved and I'd like to share it with you, (it probably dates to the 1950's):

O heavenly Father, make me a better parent. Teach me to understand children, to listen patently to what they have to say and to answer all their questions kindly. Keep me from interrupting them or contradicting them. Make me as courteous to them as I would have them be to me. Forbid that I should ever laugh at their mistakes, or resort to shame or ridicule when they displease me. May I never punish them for my own selfish satisfaction or to show my power.

Let me not tempt my child to lie or steal. And guide me hour by hour that I may demonstrate by all I say and do that honesty produces happiness. Reduce, I pray, the meanness in me. And when I am out of sorts, help me, O Lord, to hold my tongue. May I ever be mindful that my children are children and I should not expect of them the judgement of adults.

Le me not rob them of the opportunity to wait on themselves and to make decisions. Bless me with the bigness to grant them all their reasonable requests, and the courage to deny them privileges I know will do them harm.

Make me fair and just and kind.
And fit me, O Lord, to be loved and respected and imitated by my children.

Lately, I have been combing the internet for a mano figa, a hand charm. I'd love to see a modern version of this African amulet good luck charm made in a Buddhist style with a mudra hand position and etched mendi henna in the gold or stone. Until then, the vintage/antique ones are out there.

This sweet little World War II v-mail dropped out of a book that I had purchased.
I just love the poem on it, quite profound, giving us a great example of how language changes; Amazing.
