It’s good to be back with you after skipping out last week; I needed a bit of a break. And now that I’m back with you, it’s time to say goodbye to October, and hello to November.

The year has flew by so far as we approach the holidays, but that doesn’t stop the new music from coming. Believe me, I have some dandy ones for your ears this week, and I hope that you enjoy the musical selection that is coming your way on this edition of the show.

Believe it or not, there aren’t that many shows left for this year. There’s quite a bit of music to still go through, leading to the two-part shows known as The Most Recommended Music of 2009. Dates will be announced soon. All of this will end another year of Urban Landscapes, as January will start the show’s 13th year.

Back with more sounds next week; peace.

I have a backlog of some killer, killer music, and yet this week you are only going to get a very teeny, weeny small taste of it from me.

Why?

Because this week, I’m turning over a good portion of the show to give you an exclusive Urban Landscapes guestmix from the quartet known as Circle of Funk. If you’ve been listening to the show over the last few months, you may know that I’ve dropped some heavy house pressure from these lads, basing themselves between London and Brighton in the UK. The tunes in question, “M4 Movements” and “London Groove” have gone well in the underground clubs, are also part of the mix. You’ll hear a mixture of dope classics and groovy newness. Big shouts to the guys, and especially to Lee and Paul, who are fans of the show, for taking the time to put together the mix.

So here’s hoping that you’ll enjoy the goods on this week’s edition of Urban Landscapes. A bunch of heaviness is in store for you next week, so be sure to tune in on-air or online. Be good!

Peace.

<itunes:summary>I have a backlog of some killer, killer music, and yet this week you are only going to get a very teeny, weeny small taste of it from me.

Why?

Because this week, I'm turning over a good portion of the show to give you an exclusive Urban Landscapes guestmix from the quartet known as Circle of Funk. If you've been listening to the show over the last few months, you may know that I've dropped some heavy house pressure from these lads, basing themselves between London and Brighton in the UK. The tunes in question, "M4 Movements" and "London Groove" have gone well in the underground clubs, are also part of the mix. You'll hear a mixture of dope classics and groovy newness. Big shouts to the guys, and especially to Lee and Paul, who are fans of the show, for taking the time to put together the mix.

So here's hoping that you'll enjoy the goods on this week's edition of Urban Landscapes. A bunch of heaviness is in store for you next week, so be sure to tune in on-air or online. Be good!

Peace.

Welcome to October, and the start of the countdown to the end of 2009.

There’s plenty of musical goodness left to be hatched, and I’m extremely pleased as can be to start off this week’s show with a triplet from an album that will surely be among the tops on my list at year’s end. It’s the new project from the West London musical pioneers 4Hero. If you’ve been listening to this show for eons, then you might have heard me present music from the guys known as Marc Mac (nee Mark St. Clair) and Dego (Dennis McFarlane) through several of their albums, including the classic “Two Pages,” “Creating Patterns,” and “Play with the Changes.”

This time around, 4Hero has decided to pass on some of their favorite tunes for some fine talents to cover inna classical/jazzy/cinematic vibe. The results, I will tell you, are top notch, making this album a must-have in the vein of “Two Pages.” I think you’re going to enjoy these beauties, too. Shouts go to Matthias Vogt (re:jazz) and Marc Mac himself.

Of course, there’s more where that came from. Enjoy, and I’ll be back at you next week. Peace.

So the Mayer Hawthorne day here in San Luis Obispo was a good one. It started with him performing a DJ set in the Wax Museum of Boo Boo Records during the late afternoon, and man does he know how to use the TT’s. For an hour, he had his audience spellbound and watching in amazement. And he was very appreciative of the vinyl surrounding him there, too, as well as the audience that showed up.

Then that night was the live show. Had my phone been working, I would have taken a few photos during the sound check. It was tight, and really good to watch the band and the sound guy tweak things until everyone was happy.

At showtime, MC Buff 1 opened up alongside turntablist 14K, and the audience was very receptive. Afterwards, 14K threw down plenty of chilled beats during the intermission, which lead into the band itself.

All dressed up in light brown suits, with Mayer Hawthorne being the exception in a dark suit and looking like a bit like Clark Kent, he and his band The County had the audience in their hands for just barely over an hour. The show was too quick, but it seemed that everyone had a great time, but were very tired by the time the band was done. All-in-all, it was a great show.

I did a little DJ set before the event began. After overcoming some equipment glitches, it was an all-vinyl affair that was very chilled and relaxed. Somehow, I got the sound guy’s attention. He mentioned several times that night that he really liked the music, and I’m very cool with that.

Big thanks to Numbskull for booking the bands, and also big ups to Korie and the crew at Downtown Brew for lending support during the days leading up to the show. Also shots to Malik at Boo Boo Records, as well as C-Murph for the TT’s I borrowed from him that night. Hopefully, we will be fortunate to have more acts like these here.

Meanwhile, it’s time to present to you a new show; lots of goodies and surprises that I’m very happy to share with you. As we here in the Northern Hemisphere are heading into a little weather change (though you wouldn’t notice by the heat here in California this week), brace yourselves for plenty of musical goodness to round out 2009, which will lead up to the last two shows of the year to look back at the best music that rocked my world this year.

Back at ya next week; peace.

The music one again was overflowing, and I put it out there on my Facebook wall…two hours this week or three? Not a lot of responses, but I did get responses from those whom I held in high regard.

So this week, another three hours of wonderful music to keep your need for quality goodness is now in the bag and ready for you to enjoy. I’m truly grateful for the labels and promoters that really do their best to put out some top-notch sounds. People have been bemoaning in recent years about the state of music, and the quality thereof. Somehow, the ones that help rise to the occasion seem to make my direction, and to share them with you is an honor that I continue to savor. So thank you all, fans included!

This week’s guestmix comes once again from Bangana, and it’s Combo taking the reins representing Bangana in the mix. Quite a bit of new and forthcoming music from the duo, as well as other coolness, are part of the one-hour mix that you’ll hear on the show.

And now, I must be on my way. I hope to share with you my thoughts on the Mayer Hawthorne show that will be coming here to San Luis Obispo tomorrow night the next time I do the playlist. Til then, stay well and good!

Peace.

Summertime is officially winding down as we move into the long weekend here in the United States. Unofficially, it’s been hot here in California. Today as I type this, the air has a nice sea breeze while the sun continues to shine brightly.

Now on to the goods; in particular, this week’s Urban Landscapes Guestmix from Cubikmusik. He runs a blog called, well, Cubikmusik, one that I’ve recently discovered by way of his informational postings on Twitter. <itunes:summary>Summertime is officially winding down as we move into the long weekend here in the United States. Unofficially, it's been hot here in California. Today as I type this, the air has a nice sea breeze while the sun continues to shine brightly.

Now on to the goods; in particular, this week's Urban Landscapes Guestmix from Cubikmusik. He runs a blog called, well, Cubikmusik, one that I've recently discovered by way of his informational postings on Twitter. The blog has been running on and off since 2002, now mostly on these days, with help from a variety of contributors from around the world. It covers much of the music scene that this show supports, and then some. He's sent by a fresh soul mix, cultivated from his home outta Dublin, Ireland, and I'm presenting it to you this week.

Enjoy the new tracks, the fine edits, and your week. Back at you next week!

Luckily on the day that I’m typing this, there’s a bit of a sea breeze that’s cooling the air down a little, affording me the time to finish up the post-production for this week’s show so that you can listen to your heart’s content.

It starts off in a non-standard Urban Landscapes way, so stay with it. By the end of this special three-hour broadcast, hopefully you will savor the experience for what it is…some of the finest music out there for your listening pleasure.

Right now, there are a bunch of people at my place, as my housemate/landlord whips up copious amounts of food. My stomach is grumbling, and I’m going to join them now. So have at it, and I’ll be back atcha next week. Enjoy!

<itunes:summary>It's great to once again give you a full-on show with loads of newness. I've been eager to give them to you last week, but once again equipment problems at the station forced my hand. But all went well last night, and now you'll be the beneficiary of the results.

So without further ado, I give you this week's broadcast. Enjoy, and I'll be back next week!

Peace.

Once again, some equipment problems have put a crimper in my original plans to bring you a bunch of fresh newness. And once again, the show must go on!

So with that, it’s time to bring you another show full of jazz, jazz, jazz. And obviously, not just of the straight-ahead variety. If you’ve listened to this show over the years, you know that “jazzy, soulful club culture” is what I am a big proponent of. There are many different hybrids of what jazz is, to the point that purists may vehemently disagree. Still, it’s really nice to know that the more enlightened jazz lovers tend to embrace the different strands, shades and variants.

Though most of us know that jazz originated here in the states, it reach is truly global. The representation of jazz on this week’s show will come from all around Europe, even in locations where the Iron Curtain was a barrier back in the day. And places like Japan and stateside will get their due, too. Fine labels like Ricky-Tick from Finland, Schema from Italy, Perfect Toy from Germany, and Cosmic Sounds representing Eastern Europe among many others will get some lovin’ here, and those of you who aren’t familiar with the labels (among all the others this week) should get to know and explore their respective catalogs.

If you think that good jazz is just Coltrane, Silver, and Davis, then take some time to have a gander and a listen to this week’s jazzified selection. Hope you’ll dig!

Fingers are crossed that I will give you a full-on show with all brand-new goodies next week. Have a good one, in the meantime; peace.

It’s summertime here in the States (with apologies to friends in the other hemisphere), and no doubt there are parties and events everywhere. Dancing is good any time of year, but especially during this time of the year. So with the absolutely insane bumper crop of house music that’s been stacking up for the last several weeks, I’ve decided to do a few all-dance sessions. It’s mainly house, but could also be broken, dubby, or whatever fits the uptempo vibe.

And this session is all house, but with a variety of different house vibes. I hope you enjoy the music in as much as I had selecting and mixing these for you. And because I, um, forgot to turn on the recorder at the radio station this past week, I had to rerecord the set for you. The benefit of it is that I’m just going to let my voice take a break this week, and just let you enjoy the session.

Take it all in, and I’ll be back atcha next week with…well, I have no idea what I’m going to do yet. But should be a good one, me thinks!

Have a good week; peace.

This week’s music selection includes several acts that have found Urban Landscapes on Myspace, as well as some fine new jazz bits from both the Ricky-Tick and Perfect Toy labels, and some funky bits too.

Also this week: the first live set ever on Urban Landscapes. The set comes from Scott, the German production duo consisting of Daniel Brandt and Jan Brauer. They’ve put out some very leftfield releases for labels such as Fluid Ounce and Bagpak Music. Last year, Daniel Brandt has set up his own label called Doppelschall, which is getting good international buzz. Scott has taken its productions on the road, currently touring Japan as of this writing. Daniel offered some choice live sets that Scott has done, one of which I’ll present to you exclusively on this week’s show. Big ups to Daniel for the goods.

Hope you enjoy this week’s edition of the show. Back next week with a bumper crop of uptempo goodness. Get those dancing shoes ready!

Peace.

Summertime is in full swing here in California, and these days the weather is very much agreeable with the Mediterranean climate of San Luis Obispo. Wherever you are in the world, I hope that life is treating you well and good.

Just as I was about to present to you this week’s show last week, Michael Jackson passed away. I would have been remiss to not give the talented entertainment a proper tribute, and so it was. To catch the show, be sure to look for last week’s three-hour MJ tribute now online.

And now here it is, Part Two of the Halfway Rewind Special. The focus this week is on the singles & EP’s that were released so far this year, and there’s been plenty of them played on the show in 2009. The tough part always come down to narrowing the list to the ones that I feel are standouts. They don’t necessarily have to be innovative or groundbreaking, though some of the picks came close. And given that it was a three-hour broadcast, even then the full list would have had to embody at least three more hours to fit them all in. So just like last week, at the end of the playlist you will find the other EP’s and singles that didn’t fit in due to time limitations. Whether you put them on your favorite mp3 player, or add them to your essential tunes to spin out at a gig, hopefully you will give your props by supporting these talented acts.

Next week, the show is back on track with lots and lots of fresh new music. Also this month: a guestmix, maybe two, and some surprises as well. So hold on; it’s going to be a great month for music on the show.

As ever, look for the show on Facebook, Myspace and Twitter.

Catch you later this week; peace.

As I listen back to the Michael Jackson tribute special recorded live well over a week ago, I marvel at just how well the tunes hold up in 2009. There are no fillers here; these are all really good tunes. It doesn’t matter if it’s way back when with the Jackson 5 and the background talents of The Corporation, or if it was with The Jacksons with the soul uber-producers Gamble and Huff, or if it’s MJ himself with Q, affectionately nicknamed for the legendary Quincy Jones, the various productions pushed the bounds of what pop and soul music was supposed to be.

Michael Jackson was certainly an entertainer that has pushed through one boundary after another. In his four decades as a talent to be reckoned with, from being the lead vocalist of the Jackson 5 to just about owning the world with the record-breaking success of his album Thriller, he did no wrong in percolating the right ingredients for surefire party jams, or even heartfelt ballads, that stirs many an emotion to this day.

So when the news broke on Thursday July 25th that Michael Jackson had passed away, it was too unbelievable to be true. So unbelievable it was, that the Internet was abuzz in speculation for several hours. Eventually, the truth was known that the once King of Pop was pronounced dead at age 50.

Say what you will about the last 10-15 years of his turbulent life, fueled by plenty of media speculation that has taken his career downward in a big way, few on earth can deny the massive musical legacy that Michael Jackson has left us. And just as he was on the verge of a major comeback that would have had him perform 50 shows at London’s O2 Arena, what we now are left with is the music.

So in lieu of Part Two of the Halfway Rewind Special, a three-hour musical retrospective of MJ, from the breakout songs alongside his brothers collectively known as the Jackson 5, through his extremely fruitful solo collaboration with Quincy Jones, comes some of the best works. Not much here in terms of remixes (except a couple) or rarities, and that’s okay. In the end, it’s about saluting the talents of one of the most formidable entertainers in the history of music.

Here’s hoping that you enjoy the show, the quotes…all of it.

Rest in peace, MJ.

<itunes:summary>As I listen back to the Michael Jackson tribute special recorded live well over a week ago, I marvel at just how well the tunes hold up in 2009. There are no fillers here; these are all really good tunes. It doesn't matter if it's way back when with the Jackson 5 and the background talents of The Corporation, or if it was with The Jacksons with the soul uber-producers Gamble and Huff, or if it's MJ himself with Q, affectionately nicknamed for the legendary Quincy Jones, the various productions pushed the bounds of what pop and soul music was supposed to be.

And just as he was on the verge of a major comeback that would have had him perform 50 shows at London's O2 Arena, what we now are left with is the music.

So in lieu of Part Two of the Halfway Rewind Special, a three-hour musical retrospective of MJ, from the breakout songs alongside his brothers collectively known as the Jackson 5, through his extremely fruitful solo collaboration with Quincy Jones, comes some of the best works. Not much here in terms of remixes (except a couple) or rarities, and that's okay. In the end, it's about saluting the talents of one of the most formidable entertainers in the history of music.

Here's hoping that you enjoy the show, the quotes...all of it.

Rest in peace, MJ.

It’s the Halfway Rewind Special, split in two parts. This week focuses on the albums, and next week’s show will be on the singles and EP’s. <itunes:summary>It's hard to believe that we are at the halfway mark of 2009. The year goes by fast, but there's still plenty of 2009 yet. Uncharted territory, indeed, and looking forward to what happens next!

This point of 2009 will be marked with two specials starting next week. It's the annual Halfway Rewind Special, looking back at 2009 up to now. Part One, airing on June 18, will focus on the albums, while Part Two will focus on the choice singles and EP's; that show will air June 25. Of course, the shows and the playlists will be online shortly a day or two after the airdate.

This week, though, has some fresh new goodies from the likes of Compost, Loungin', Brownswood, Rush Hour, and Deepblak among other labels. So enjoy the show, and we'll rewind together starting next week!

Peace.

But hey, it’s three hours packed with loads of goodies, much of which has been in wait for a few weeks, and others just days old that I couldn’t wait to share with you. So there’s quite a bit of fine music for you to listen to, or dance to!

And as if that wasn’t enough, I have for you an exclusive Urban Landscapes Guestmix from Nick Woodmansky of Emanative. If you’ve been listening to the show, you know that I’ve been taken by the production quality of the UK-based outfit known as Emanative. Nick is the main person behind the project, backed by a talented roster that includes Ben Hawten and Jessica Lauren; a true labor of love that we are all fortunate to hear and savor. The full-length debut from Emanative, “Space,” was released not long ago on Futuristica Music, and Nick was kind enough to put together an exclusive mix for the show. I’m glad to share it with you, and I’m very appreciative of Nick for taking the time from his busy schedule to concoct the mix.

So enjoy the mix, the music, and the week; catch you again next week!

Peace.
