With just one week left in football’s regular season, the District 3 playoff race is nearly settled.

Here’s what we know: Barring some crazy glitch in the ratings, at least seven YAIAA teams (Dallastown, South Western, Red Lion, Northeastern, York Suburban, Hanover, Biglerville) will be playing in Week 11.

What else do we know? Several other teams could have their playoff destiny decided on Friday night. We break down those teams and their chances below.

Bermudian Springs players, including Tristan Hoke (12), cheer on the sidelines in the final seconds their game against York Catholic. Shane Dunlap – GameTimePA.com

Class AAA

On the bubble: Spring Grove (4-5, .582 rating, one spot and .002 points out of the final playoff spot)

Have the Rockets made progress from last year? Yes. Under first-year head coach Kyle Sprenkle, Spring Grove has eclipsed last year’s win total and has even positioned themselves within range of sneaking into the postseason.

But the knock on the Rockets is that their best win was against a two-win Central York team. Not the most impressive resume. The reward for sneaking into the final spot could be a matchup with top-seeded powerhouse Bishop McDevitt.

What needs to happen?: Most likely just a win Friday. The Rockets take on rival South Western and a win over a solid AAAA squad could be enough to leap-frog Greencastle-Antrim or Milton Hershey, who are playing AAA and AA competition. A loss by either of those teams could obviously help as well.

Class AA

On the bubble: Bermudian Springs (5-4, .484 rating, one spot and .003 points out of the final playoff spot)

Who would’ve thought the Eagles, who started 0-4, would be this close to a playoff spot with one week to go? Well here they are. Head coach Jon DeFoe and his staff have not only kept the ship afloat, but they’ve seemingly completed the shortest rebuilding process in recent memory. Kudos to the coaches and players.

What needs to happen?: The Eagles are just one spot behind Hamburg for the final playoff slot, and they play a tougher opponent (Biglerville) than the Hawks do Friday (Schuylkill Valley, 2-7). So, logic would suggest a win over Biglerville could move Bermudian ahead of Hamburg. Did a Canners-Eagles matchup really need any more intrigue to pique your interest?

Class A

On the bubble: York Catholic (4-5, .444 rating, one spot and .02 points ahead of the final playoff spot) and Delone Catholic (4-5, .400 rating, one spot and .02 points behind the final spot)

Both YAIAA Division III squads have struggled at times, but done just enough to keep themselves in postseason contention. The Irish have done more to help their cause, winning three of their last four games, and have a better win on their resume – a 27-20 victory over Biglerville. They also had a much stronger nonleague schedule.

What needs to happen?: York Catholic really just needs a win over York County Tech or a Millersburg loss to Kennard-Dale, and that should be enough. Delone could use a win over cross-borough rival Hanover, and a Kennard-Dale win over Millersburg.

Again, this is all speculation, but this should work as a guide for Friday night. Enjoy.

Some landmark events took place this past weekend in YAIAA football.

For starters, the Dallastown Wildcats remained undefeated, moving to 9-0 with a 33-14 win over Central York. The victory also guaranteed Dallastown at least a share of the Division I championship. While the Wildcats are 6-0 in divisional play South Western is 5-1 – the Mustangs’ lone loss came to the Wildcats on Oct. 16. Dallastown will have a highly-entertaining game next weekend, when they travel to face chief rival Red Lion. The Lions sit at 6-3 on the year, 4-2 overall and are on a roll after knocking off Spring Grove 28-14 on Friday.

York Suburban High School also made some history this weekend. For starters, the Trojans won their seventh straight game by beating Gettysburg 45-14. The win moved York Suburban to 7-2 on the year and 5-0 in YAIAA Division II play – a game up on West York, a team the Trojans beat 23-22 earlier this season.

But two Trojans athletes also moved to the top of the record books in Friday’s win as well. Thomas Merkle’ 285 yards passing gave him the YAIAA career passing record with over 4,900 career yards. His battery mate, wide receiver Colin Mailman, also recorded six receptions, giving him 102 on the season which topped the Suburban single-season mark – 100, set by Mailman last season.

There were other show stoppers and streak snappers on Friday night around the YAIAA. Biglerville won a huge game for its program, topping Hanover 42-21. Not only did the win end Hanover’s undefeated season – the team is now 8-1 on the year – but the Canners, Nighthawks and Bermudian Springs are all tied atop the Division III standings with 5-1 league records. Bermudian continued its hot play of late as well, winning its fifth-straight game by beating Littlestown 35-0.

With that, vote in this week’s Athlete of the Week poll:

Delone Catholic volleyball is reaching dynasty levels, as the program’s won four YAIAA championships in four years. Of course, the Squirettes also won a state championship in 2013.

This year’s team whipped through the YAIAA tourney by dispatching quality teams throughout. The Squirettes beat an undefeated Central York team in the semifinals round and then swept York Suburban for the championship.

In the title game it was the Squirettes seniors getting it done – per usual. Sarah Senft (19 kills), Katie Laughman (31 assists), Amber Johnson (four kills) and Lilly Singleton (four kills) each played a role in the team’s straight-set victory.

Still, Delone’s sites are set higher entering the postseason.

“When you’re winning multiple years in a row, and you realize how good our league is at volleyball, it adds significance,” Squirettes head coach Jason Leppo said. “But we never want to make it a bigger deal than it is. We have bigger goals. Right now we have a forward focus, and tomorrow, we’ll get back to practice. After the season, when we get time to reflect, we’ll look back and talk about how it was pretty cool.”

We gave the entire team an Athlete of the Week nomination on the Varsity Beat Blog. Vote before before polls close Monday at 5 p.m.:

(Paul Kuehnel – GameTimePA.com)

It was quite the year for Gus Minkin, the Central York senior golfer who took home a ton of hardware in 2015.

Minkin won a YAIAA championship, a District 3 title and then won the Regional tournament as well. This past week, he finished fifth in the PIAA state competition after firing a two-day score of 150 at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

Minkin was in the hunt going into the second and final day of the tournament, sitting just two strokes off the lead. He then took the lead on the final day at one point. But a triple-bogey on hole No. 9 and a double bogey on No. 10 ultimately hurt Minkin’s chances of taking home the crown.

No worries though. The senior had a standout season and and a top-five finish is nothing to be ashamed of in his position.

He was joined by teammates Joe Parrini, who finished ninth overall in the tournament following a two-day score of 154.

Also joining the two Central York Panthers on the leaderboard were two Eastern York Golden Knights: Kevin Crumbling finished tied for 15th place with a two-day score of 158. And Andrew Davis tied for 24th place with a two-day total of 163.

Vote for Minkin or any of our other nominees for this week’s Athlete of the Week poll, which closes Monday at 5 p.m.:

With the 2015 fall sports season hitting the back stretch, we asked five York-area athletes for their opinions on a few hot topics ranging from biggest rivalries in the YAIAA to best places to play. Check it out.

Question: First up, other than your own home field, where is your favorite place to play?

Brittany Arentz, Northeastern soccer: Spring Grove.

Terry Cains, West York football: I would say Dallastown because it’s a nice field. There’s always a good crowd and it’s always a good game.

Jordan Landis, York Suburban volleyball: My favorite gym in division play would definitely be West York. Like us, they have a smaller gym so it feels like home and the atmosphere there is always awesome which makes playing there so much better. Their fans and gym just amp everything up more than at any other gym.

Jared Wagner, Central York soccer: Susquehannock.

Jayla Godfrey, Red Lion field hockey: Spring Grove.

-Who’s your team’s biggest rival and why?

Arentz: Our biggest rival would definitely be Dover. The year before I joined the team, they beat Northeastern in the league finals. Over the years, we have also had close battles and it has gone back and forth.

Cains: Dover.

Landis: Our biggest rival this year would definitely have to be Susquehannock just because of how back and forth we have been this year, especially with us chasing them for the division title. However, it would probably have to be West York overall just because they’ve always been such good competition with us, and we have built up tension outside of just volleyball. We are just school rivals. And we haven’t had Susquehannock in our division long enough for us to get that built-up rivalry from the rest of the school as well.

Wagner: Dallastown. Records always get thrown out the window whenever we play each other. It’s always a battle of wills and no team ever wants to lose that game.

Godfrey: I believe Dallastown is our teams biggest rival. Not only because they’re five minutes away, but also because of the ongoing rivalry we’ve had since the beginning that is still going til this day. It’s not just field hockey’s rival, but it’s naturally every sport’s rival at Red Lion.

-What was your favorite moment from this season?

Arentz: Beating Central in overtime.

Cains: My favorite moment is always taking that field on Friday nights and competing with my brothers.

Landis: Playing Susquehannock the second time around or in the county semifinals. We knew we had to prove ourselves after our first showing and we definitely did that. Our team played so well and everything just clicked for us. They’re definitely games I’ll remember from my senior year, especially last night (YAIAA tournament) because I had a season high number of kills, and we’ve never even made it past the first round of counties before. So not only was playing Susquehannock exciting, it was also something we’ve never done before, so that was awesome.

Wagner: Beating Daniel Boone, 6-1, in our last home game.

Godfrey: Our upset over New Oxford on our senior night. I scored the first goal to give the team the momentum we needed, then assisted Gill Orwig on her goal. New Oxford had two penalty corners in the last thirty seconds of the game, and after I got the ball out of the circle, my entire team rushed me. The team rushing me and everyone being there happy and filled with excitement was the greatest feeling ever.

-Who is one famous athlete you’d like to meet and why?

Arentz: Abby Wambach. She’s the leading scorer in American soccer history and overall, she’s a powerful leader and an inspiration.

Cains: Stefon Diggs (NFL wide receiver). He’s a very hard worker and a great receiver. He’s been my favorite receiver since I started playing receiver my freshman year.

Landis: There aren’t really any famous athletes I’d like to meet. Maybe Steph Curry, but who wouldn’t want to meet him?

Wagner: Isaiah Thomas, the Boston Celtics point guard. He’s the best player in the NBA under six feet tall.

Godfrey: I think Hines Ward would be the one famous person I would want to meet because no matter any outcome of a game good or bad, he always walked off the field with a big smile on his face knowing he gave it his all every chance he had.

-What team in the league has the toughest goalie/defense to go up against?

Arentz: If I could vote for Brenna (Schroter) at goalie and Sawyer (Patrick) back at sweeper, I would. But other than them, Dallastown has a pretty strong defense.

Cains: The toughest defense I went up against this year would be Red Lion.

Landis: Delone, Susky or West York. We haven’t really seen Delone much so it’s hard to tell, but Susky and West York have great defenses. They go for everything and get touches on most balls.

Wagner: Gettysburg has the best team defense I’ve seen, but Darian McCauley (West York) is the best goalie we’ve played against this year.

Godfrey: Abbie Timperio from Central is a tough goalie to go against. She’s very dynamic, quick on her feet, and good at getting up and down from diving to the ground. Central’s defense is also a tough defense to face. Their sticks are always on the ground with solid block tackles, as well as being low to run through the ball whenever necessary.

Wide receivers ruled the night Friday in YAIAA football.

Well, not entirely. But the position certainly had some primetime performers to choose from for this week’s Athlete of the Week poll.

We’ll start at Northeastern, where David Ankney shined with a three-catch 140-yard performance in the Bobcats’ 30-0 road win at Spring Grove. Ankney had scoring grabs of 73 and 56 yards on the evening. The second one was a circus grab: the ball was tipped by two Spring Grove defensive backs and Ankney – who was standing at the 13-yard line – grabbed the deflection on the run one-handed at the 13-yard line and raced into the end zone to give the Bobcats a 20-0 lead in the second quarter.

York Suburban wide receiver Colin Mailman does what he does virtually every week – cash in with a big game. Mailman’s four-catch, 161-yard, three-touchdown evening (all three TDs came in the first half) pushed the Trojans to a 55-27 victory over undermanned Dover.

On to Dallastown, where Jawaun McMillian hauled in six catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns of his own as the Wildcats beat New Oxford 43-13. New Oxford actually took a 7-0 lead in the game, but Dallastown scored 43 unanswered points to remain undefeated with an 8-0 record.

And at Bermudian Springs, Quinton Nace caught a touchdown with 15 seconds remaining as the Eagles beat York Catholic 20-17 for their fourth-straight victory.

Pick a receiver – or any other high school football player for that matter – in this week’s Athlete of the Week poll:

It was a successful week for two Dallastown girls’ sports programs.

In field hockey, the Wildcats ran the gauntlet. The team knocked off Gettysburg in a long-anticipated matchup between two rivals during the YAIAA semifinals on Tuesday. How it unfolded? A penalty shot with 2:05 remaining from Maggie Noll found the back of the net, and made the difference in a 1-0 victory.

Then in the championship round, the Wildcats beat Bermudian Springs 2-0 to win the league title. The Wildcats will now open the Class AAA District 3 tournament Tuesday at 7 p.m. as the No. 11 seed at No. 6 Daniel Boone.

On the girls’ soccer field, the Wildcats were YAIAA champions as well, and picked up some thrilling wins down the stretch to claim the crown.

In the semifinals, Mia Rexroth played hero for Dallastown, netting a goal 93 seconds into overtime to give the Wildcats a 3-2 victory over Northeastern.

In the title round, the Wildcats got the game-winning goal in double overtime from sophomore Carson Gold to beat Dover 3-2.

The Wildcats open the Class AAA District 3 tournament Tuesday as a No. 10 seed at No. 7 Elizabethtown. Click here to see the complete tournament bracket.

Rexroth and Gold each made our YAIAA Athlete of the Week poll. Vote before it closes Monday at 5 p.m.:

It was the Gettysburg boys’ soccer team that won a marquee matchup this week to capture the YAIAA championship.

The Warriors, unbeaten on the season at 19-0, knocked off Central York 1-0 on Thursday to win the league tournament title. The Panthers are now 19-2 on the season.

The game was long anticipated. Neither team had met on the year – Gettysburg is a YAIAA Division II program, while Central competes in Division I. Both are outstanding clubs, and expect to compete well into the state tournament

The Warriors picked up a key goal from standout attacker Adam Yingling at the 27:32 mark and held on from there thanks to key defense and goalkeeping.

The two teams are now in the District 3 tournament, which begins Monday. Click here for soccer brackets in Class AAA, Class AA and Class A.

With that, vote away in our Athlete of the Week poll, which will close Monday at 5 p.m.:

<img class="size-large wp-image-14146" src="http://www.yorkblog.com/varsity/files/2015/10/1007_SPT_JL-DT-NE-soccer-03-L-550x367.jpg" alt="Dallastown's Ali Shick (22) dribbles down the sideline against Northeastern on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015. Jeff Lautenberger — For GameTimePA.com

Field Hockey

Because it features four teams instead of eight, the field hockey playoffs starts a few days later than soccer. The two semifinals will take place Wednesday at York Suburban, and the championship will be Thursday at Northeastern. Both semifinals provide plenty of storylines to keep an eye on.

Dallastown vs. Gettysburg, 5:30: Where do we even start with this one? For years, the Wildcats had built a dynasty by dominating their YAIAA competition until last year when the new kids on the block – Gettysburg – came in and shocked Dallastown, 3-0, in the YAIAA semifinals. The Wildcats, who have mentioned Gettysburg in postgame interviews several times this season, would love to erase the memories of that devastating loss, but the Warriors may not be ready to give up their top spot. Gettysburg went 18-0 and gave up just eight goals all season. Expect a great game between the league’s top two squads.

New Oxford vs. Bermudian Springs, 7:00: The Eagles have reached this point in three of the last four seasons, but haven’t made it to the league championship game in any of those trips. Led by Mackenzie Farley and Nicki Wolf, the Eagles won 15 games and cruised to their ninth-consecutive division title. The question is can they get by New Oxford and set up a rematch with either Dallastown or Gettysburg?

The upstart Colonials leapfrogged Red Lion and Central York, who were both expected to compete for that second Division I playoff slot. Led by junior Kaelyn Long, whose stick-handling skills help New Oxford control the midfield, and the speedy Braxtin Reddinger on the outside, the Colonials have turned some heads this season. They were the only team in the league to beat Dallastown.

For either of these two Adams County squads, reaching the title game would be an impressive accomplishment.

Dover vs. Dallastown, 7:30 at Susquehannock: Neither of these teams are strangers to the YAIAA title game spotlight. One of them has been in each of the last seven title games, but will square off for the first time.

Dover managed to stop the red-hot Central York Panthers Tuesday, 1-0, and Dallastown went to overtime with Northeastern, but came away with a 3-2 win.

These two squads are loaded with talent. Dover’s Brooke Firestone reached the 100 career goal plateau this season, while Dallastown’s defense (Ali Shick, Sierra Austin, Natalie Gettle and Lyndee Anders) shut out 10 division opponents in a row at one point.

The Eagles’ defense was among the best in the league as well, surrendering just nine goals in league play.

Expect a low-scoring battle on Thursday.

Boys soccer

Central York vs. Gettysburg, 5:30, at Susquehannock: Can the Panthers make it three league titles in a row? Central will take on Gettysburg, who they defeated 2-1 in last year’s YAIAA semifinals. The Warriors went undefeated and gave up just five goals all season. The only goal they surrendered after Sept. 15 was an own goal to Biglerville in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Central’s only loss came Sept. 5 against Lower Dauphin. Since then, the Panthers have been on fire.

Neither team was threatened in the semifinals as both teams led their respective opponents early.<img class="alignright wp-image-12124 size-full" src="http://www.yorkblog.com/varsity/files/2014/10/Igor-Gomes.jpg" alt="Igor Gomes, left, scored the lone goal of the game, as the Panthers topped Dallastown 1-0 on Thursday night.
These two squads have been on a collision course all season and soccer fans finally get to see them square off Thursday. Expect Igor Gomes, who scored a hat trick for Central Tuesday, and Matt Yingling, who scored twice and added an assist for the Warriors, to provide a few highlight-worthy plays.

There were plenty of heroic performances this past weekend in YAIAA football.

The Dallastown Wildcats remained undefeated, after knocking off South Western at the Corral – the Mustangs entered the contest with a 5-1 record of their own and undefeated in YAIAA Division I play but it was the Wildcats who moved to 7-0 on the season. Quarterback Cade Gold was clutch again for the Wildcats – 81 yards rushing including a 54-yard touchdown run that proved the be the game-winning score in the team’s 29-21 win.

But that wasn’t the only impressive individual effort from the local football scene Friday. York Suburban continued its strong play in YAIAA Division II play, coming back to beat West York 23-22 on the power of a 21-yard field goal from Jonas Atkinson as time expired. York Suburban is now 3-0 in YAIAA Division II, tied atop the standings with Dover.

Hanover remained undefeated as well, ripping through Littlestown 36-14 to move to 7-0. While a number of players stood out for the Nighthawks it was the team’s rushing attack that led the way, specifically Jordan Laughman (34 carries, 190 yards) and Justin Barnes (12 carries, 132 yards).

Other top performers from the week that was included Ashton West of Bermudian Springs (20 carries, 90 yards, game-winning touchdown in overtime), Daniel Brewer of Kennard-Dale (backup quarterback who sparked team’s comeback victory) and Kendrick Boyd-Gillespie of Red Lion (10 catches, 204 yards, five touchdowns in Lions’ win over New Oxford).

A number of the above-mentioned competitors made out Athlete of the Week poll, along with some others that flew under the radar. Vote away before this week’s poll closes at 5 p.m. Monday.
