Lifeguard Thank-you Card

My sons take swimming classes at our local YMCA. These classes are taught by some awesome young men and women! Our favorite is Reid. He is an exceptional teacher, an Eagle Scout and an all-around nice guy. Not only does he push the boys to try their hardest, he has built up their confidence tenfold! If they are struggling in the water, he doesn’t immediately swim to their aid. Instead, he shows them that they have the power to do it themselves. He gives them the knowledge to work out the problem on their own. That is much better than just running in to help every time something goes wrong! He would never let them get hurt, don’t get me wrong. He’s experienced enough to know the difference between a bit of panic and real trouble.

Yesterday was our final private swim lesson with Reid for the summer. As we did for their homeschool gym instructor, we made a thank-you card for Reid. Of course it had to be swim related! Since he’s our number one lifeguard, what better thank-you card than one with a lifeguard on the front. It’s my first lifeguard thank-you card! I’ve made a lot of cards, but never a lifeguard thank-you card. LOL!

Instructions:

1. Cut your card base from white card stock at 5 1/2 x 8 1/2″. Fold in half at 4 1/4″.
2. Cut a card front from a complimentary color to your clothing colors. Ink the edges. Adhere it to the card base.
3. Cut out the body, shorts and tank top using your Sizzix die. I used red for the shorts because Reid always wears red swim trunks!
4. Cut out the hair using your Sizzix die.
5. Color the hair piece to match the person you’re making your lifeguard thank-you card for. I have a video to show you how to get more depth in your hair pieces.
6. Write on the tank top as you see fit. Since our lifeguard is at the YMCA…you get the idea.
7. Glue the hair, tank top and shorts to the body.
8. Draw on the eyes and mouth. Use chalk for the cheeks. You can use a rub-on if you’re not comfortable making the face!
9. Adhere the finished lifeguard to the card front.
10. Write your message inside and you’re done!

Now, our lifeguard thank-you card had a pocket inside for a gift card. If you’re doing that, I suggest putting the pocket in as your second step. Just in case. We’ve all made calculation errors!

A fun golf themed Father’s Day card!

Golf is pretty much a given when it comes to the men I know. That’s what makes this golf themed Father’s Day card so perfect! I was going to make one of these to send to my father-in-law because he adores golf, but my husband has a wicked slice so….  (J/K honey!)

When I remake this card for my husband, I’m going to customize the grip on the club to match his set of golf clubs. If you can this for your golfer, do it! Trust me when I say that he will notice that the little club on his golf themed Father’s Day card looks just like his. And he will LOVE it! My husband has Callaway Diablo clubs. When I make the club on his card, I’ll make the grip black with the white ‘V’ and write “Callaway” at the top. I won’t ink up the lines on the head of the club so I can customize it to look like my husband’s clubs.

When you make this golf themed Father’s Day card for your guy, customize it! That is the kind of thing that makes handmade cards so awesome. You are able to completely personalize your cards every time. Making it the perfect card for the recipient!

Golf Father’s Day Card

Instructions:

1. Stamp your golf club and ball on white paper using Memento Ink in Tuxedo Black. Set it aside to dry completely.
2. Cut your white card base to 5 1/2 x 8 1/2″, scoring at 4 1/4″.
3. Cut a sky blue piece of scrapbooking paper to 4 x 5 1/4″.
4. Cut a piece of green to look like a rolling hill on the golf course. You want it to be 4″ wide, but the height is up to you. Make sure you leave enough sky for the sentiment!
5. Using a green ink that is close to the green of your paper, daub around the edges of the green piece.
6. Do the same on the blue piece of scrapbooking paper only using a matching blue ink.
7. Using alcohol markers, color the golf club. Remember to customize it!
8. Using a punch or pair of sharp scissors, cut out the golf ball. Cut out the club using good, sharp scissors.
9. Layer the green paper on top of the blue.
10. Stamp your sentiments.
11. Glue the golf ball and club to the card. You can use a pop-dot under the golf ball for a bit of dimension.
12. Cram as many golf puns as you can into the note you write inside this golf themed Father’s Day card!  :D

For my card, I used one of those Studio G sets that you can find at Michael’s in the $1 rack. We all know how hard it can be to find those sets! So, I found an alternative for you in case you can’t find the stamp set I used. If you want the sentiments my set has, you can either hand write them or print them onto the paper before you cut it down.

Wordless Wednesday – Top Note Quilted Card

Sitting Here Thinking of You. Have you ever been sitting in your favorite chair having a cup of coffee and found yourself thinking of that special someone? Or maybe thinking of a friend you haven’t talked to in a while? That was my inspiration for this card. We tend to be busy in this society of ours. We don’t often slow down and show our appreciation for each other.

I know how I feel when someone sends me a card “just because”. I feel fantastic! I feel special and wanted. Why wouldn’t I want to pass that feeling along to someone else?

1. Using a piece of white card stock suitable to use with alcohol markers (*more on this below), stamp your chair with Memento Ink in Tuxedo Black. Set it aside to dry while you put together the rest of the card.
2. For the base, I cut a piece of 8 1/2 x 11″ card stock in half and scored it at 4 1/4″. Fold on the score. (This card opens at the bottom, so the orientation is with the 5 1/2″ side at the top.)
3. Cut a piece of craft card stock to 4 1/4 x 4″.
4. Cut a piece of paper to 4 1/4 x 1″ for the carpet. (Note: I didn’t use card stock for this, just scrapbooking paper) Adhere this to the craft card stock.
5. In the top left corner of the craft card stock, stamp the chandelier using Memento Ink in Tuxedo Black.
6. Craft a coffee mug using a scrap of scrapbooking paper in a cheery color that compliments the other colors in the card.
7. Once your chair is dry, color it in using alcohol markers. I use Bic Mark-it markers. Cut out the chair using a pair of good, sharp scissors with a fine point.
8. Using a piece of scrap paper, cut a “throw blanket” and punch one edge. Adhere it to the chair.
9. Adhere the chair to the card front on the right side.
10. Using Memento Ink in Rich Cocoa, stamp the table next to the chair and adhere the coffee mug to look as if it’s sitting on the table.
11. Stamp the sentiment above the chair using the Rich Cocoa ink.
12. Shade a bit under the table and chair using chalk.
13. Adhere the card front to the base.

*I used Stampin’ Up! Whisper White cardstock for my chair because I have a ton of it that I am trying to use up. Once it’s gone, I will use Copic X-Press It exclusively for projects using alcohol markers. You will want to experiment with different papers to find your favorite. Some popular ones besides the Copic paper are: Papertrey Ink Stamper’s Select, Gina K Pure Luxury Layering Weight, and Neenah Classic Crest in Solar White.

This masculine thank-you card is one that I made when I was still a Stampin’ Up! Independent Demonstrator. It would be super simple to recreate using items found at your local craft or scrapbooking store! I will make you a list of possibilities below the card of items you could use instead of SU! products.

I always have a hard time making masculine cards. Whether it’s for a birthday, anniversary, thank- you, etc I just find it hard to get my hands on manly items! (You don’t know how many times I had to delete on that last sentence. It kept sounding like I was trying to grope some poor man! LOL!)  Most paper companies tend to cater to feminine tastes because, let’s face it, most crafters are women who want to make pretty items. Men like to get cards too! They may not say it, but they love it when we take the time to make them something special.

I’ve found that when you’re making something for that special guy, you want to keep the embellishments to a minimum. Nothing says girly like a ton of bling.  Keep the colors simple, use stripes instead of dots or flowers, and go for the darker colors. Use bright white to keep it from becoming too dark and depressing.

A simple, masculine thank-you card.

1. For the card base, cut your cardstock down to 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″. Score it at 4 1/4″ and fold in half.
2. Cut the white cardstock to 5 1/4″ x 4″.
3. Cut your patterned paper to 2 1/4″ x 4″.
4. Layer the patterned paper on top of the white cardstock, lining it up with the bottom.
5. Ink around this piece with the ink you are going to use for the sentiment. LIGHTLY ink the edges using a sponge dauber. Stamp your sentiment while you have the ink out.
6. Wrap some baker’s twine around this piece a few times and adhere it to the card base.
7. Add your bird in whatever form you’ve chosen (more about that below) using pop dots to give him dimension. Sign the card and you’re done!  :)

What to use if you don’t have Stampin’ Up! supplies to make this masculine thank-you card:

I think the top left bird in the set of Whimsical Birds by The Paper Company would be perfect! Just switch where the sentiment and bird are on my example above. Switch the knot to the right side as well.
