(1) More Important Than You Can Imagine! - I have had a wonderful dog for six years and have learned a lot along the way. I have learned more from this book than I learned in those six years. This book is so important for all pet owners. We need to be prepared to help our pets when they get minor illnesses or have serious medical problems. The book has more than 150 health care topics listed alphabetically. The book is quite easy to read, and by simply turning to a page you will know whether or not you need to call the vet immediately, later, or not at all.

The list of components necessary for a good first aid kit is helpful as well. Also, the book gives a chart of human medicines that can and cannot be used for dogs and cats along with correct dosage.

Even if you do not plan on reading the book all the way through, purchase it and tuck it away on a shelf, because you never know when you may need it!

(2) Worth every penny! - Quick story: A few months ago I was driving and saw a dog running beside the road and when I was only a few feet from him, he was struck by a car. I rushed him to the vet hospital but sadly, he passed away. I went straight to the book store and picked up this book on pet first aid, learned about treating a pet who is going into shock and now keep an animal first aid kit,

blanket and copy of this book in the trunk of my car. This was the only book I could find that addressed the issue of helping an animal who is struck by a car. It is such important information and I was thankful to find it.

(1) Big Positives Some Negatives - I am Floor Man in our house and have a Dyson C14 Upright which is fine except it is heavy and the retractable pole is a joke. The hose is stiff and doesn't extend easily. It keeps pulling the main unit along as you step away from it. So I was looking for a lighter and more versatile vacuum. I really like this vacuum (Dyson V6 Animal Cordless). Positives: great suction (really picks up the dirt and dog hair), light and easy to handle, gets under furniture with ease so there is little need to move furniture, roller bar works great (gets the hair and dirt out of area rugs and carpets), great for stairs. Yes, the powered roller bar does collect dog hair and thread (I have two golden retrievers and my wife is a quilter) and it has to be cut out. The roller bar is easily removed from the attachment for this task. The Negatives: limited battery power (means you do the house in stages a couple of rooms at a time), small capacity cannister (you will be dumping the cannister at least once per room if you have dogs), the price (You have to REALLY want the convenience). Except for these three negatives, I would give this vacuum 5 stars. It is my "go to" vac.

(2) Top notch product - Dyson's battery technology has gotten better and better. The motor unit in the beater bar head is tremendous. We have cats and I usually use my full sized Dyson Pet machine. But this unit really gets up the cat hair and is so much easier to use than the full sized machine. Fabulous for stairs too. I would only buy Dyson these days for any vacuum I need.

(1) Many products tried, this is the best - I work at a pet store and own two cats. I'm able to test litter used for one cat per box at home, and multiple cats at the adoption center located within my store. I've also had the opportunity to try a great deal of products. This litter is absolutely amazing, the best I've ever used. The clumps are as hard as rocks, but at the same time don't break apart into smaller pieces like some other litters do. It's unscented, and the litter box remains odorless even after heavy use. It's also dust free.

To compare to other brands:

World's Best is natural, flushable, non-toxic, and clumping. However, if you live in a small house or apartment the smell will get to you. The litter box will smell like vomit even after a couple uses. I have never used Swheat Scoop, but I heard it's a little better with smell than World's Best.

Fresh Step, Tidy Cats, Premium Choice, and Petco's store brand are decent, but each has disadvantages like dust, or clumps breaking apart or turning into sticky mud. They're relatively cheap however, so this is a major advantage for those on a tight budget.

Crystal litters have amazing odor control, last awhile, and don't track. There isn't a single clumping litter that doesn't track. The problem, however is with diarrhea or loose stools. You'll end up throwing away a ton of litter since the crystals don't clump. Not all cats will use the crystals, and some people are also worried about health effects from the silica dust, though companies that produce the litter claim it is non-toxic.

Cedar, crushed pea, pine cone, and cellulose litters all have their own problems. The crushed pea litter is basically dust in a bag. Even though the smells of pine or cedar are pleasant to humans and mask the smell of urine and feces, many cats are afraid of the odor and won't use the litter box. These litters also suffer from the same problems as the crystals with regards to diarrhea and loose stools. Cellulose litters don't smell, but they also cannot handle loose stools and may not absorb as well as crystals.

If a natural, flushable, environmentally litter is important to you, by all means purchase a litter based on wheat or corn. If price is the most important factor, buy a cheap clumping brand if minor inconveniences don't bother you too much. If you want a reasonably priced, high quality product with no dust and great clumping ability then choose Precious Cat Ultra.

(2) Add some activated carbon to this product and you've got a perfect cat litter - The problem: My cats have been using Fresh Step Extreme Odor Control Scoopable Cat Litter (scented or unscented) for a long, long, long time. The problem with that brand is the EXTREME dust problem that gets on everything inside the house due to the central air conditioning/heating system. And that problem has worsened over time as I have adopted more stray cats or cats that have lost their home. More cats using more cat litter boxes creates even more EXTREME dust problems. You can change out the central air filters all you want, but the dust is just too fine for the filters to catch all of that stuff. :(

The solution: Precious Cat Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter has solved the dust problem! I started switching over some cat litter boxes to Precious Cat Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter in December 2013 without any of my cat family objecting to the new cat litter. The dust problem is disappearing as my inventory of the other brand of cat litter is depleted. I am EXTREMELY pleased, and I am sure the cats are happier not having to breath the dust from the other brand. :)

I have read some reviews on Precious Cat Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter on this website that have suggested adding activated carbon to the cat litter to help with odor control. I second the suggestion, and have recently started adding a capful of Marineland Black Diamond Activated Carbon in the 40-ounce size container to a full bag of Precious Cat Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter. That seems to be about as much carbon that I see in the previous brand purchased, and the activated carbon is very effective in helping control slight odor over time that remains in the cat litter even after removal of clumped used litter.

It's nice when you're searching around on Amazon.com to see if there is a solution to a problem one is having. Precious Cat Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter has solved an EXTREME dust problem in my house. Another of life's problems solved.

2)Stellar Publication -- Don't Let The Cute Doggies On The Cover Fool You! ;-p - Dogster is an amazing magazine! I first found an issue at Barnes & Noble several weeks ago, and from that single issue, I learned SO much about caring for dogs and products for them. The articles are well-written, interesting, and fun ! I don't even own a dog yet, but the one issue of Dogster that I read was jammed packed with tons of information that I was!

The only downside is that there are only 6 issues of Dogster per year. I wish this would be a monthly magazine, and I can only hope that the Dogster team will find the trick to make that magic happen. I'd also like to see some special issues that are specific to popular breeds -- and I'd like to be the first person to request an issue for Labrador Retrievers!

I would also like the Dogster team to consider making a printed/digital magazine that is specific to owners of service dogs, seeing-eye dogs, military dogs, and other types of working dogs. I am on a waiting list for a service dog, and with the growing number of working dogs in the country, I really think there is a need for this sort of magazine. Working dogs' behaviors and needs are very different than most other dogs. With your team, you could make an amazing ongoing resource for people with disabilities as well as all other working dog handlers. There are tons of stories that you can write -- how these dogs are trained, how one goes about getting a service dog, how people can volunteer to help train and care for working dogs before they are assigned, featuring the special products to help care for these unique dogs (especially hard-to find adaptive products to help people with physical disabilities care for and play with their dog), ongoing training advice, teaching the basics about dogs to first-time owners (like me!), featuring amazing teams (and following their journey/progress), highlighting wonderful organizations that train and/or provide these dogs, etc. You could even hire working dog handlers to blog online in an official capacity and create a social media site for people with working dogs to connect. I am almost certain than any dog lover would also be interested in reading and learning about these super important dogs. I may not have my service dog yet, but let me be the first person to volunteer to let you do a story about me and my new furry friend before or after he/she comes into my life. ;-)

I was thrilled to see that Dogster subscriptions are offered on Amazon -- and I was lucky enough to score a year for 5 bucks this past weekend! I also noticed that Catster is available, which I bought as a gift for my sister who has an American Shorthair with the personality of a dog. This very thorough and well-written treatise provides a general introduction to the subject of animal law. Among the topics covered are the ownership of animals, animals as personal property, duty owed to animals, and ramifications of the medical care of animals by veterinarians. While the authors indicate that the book is designated for both attorneys and laypersons, it is quite sophisticated.... Since the subject of animal law has not been examined as extensively as many other legal topics, this treatise is a welcome addition to academic or special libraries.

Peter R. Cheeke is Professor Emeritus of Animal Nutrition at Oregon State University. He grew up on a small family farm in British Columbia, Canada. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BS in Agriculture (19 G3) and MS in animal nutrition (1965). He completed his academic training at Oregon State University with his PhD in animal nutrition (1968), under the supervision of Dr. James Oldfield. His PhD research was on interrelationships between vitamin E and selenium. Since 1969, he has been assistant associate and full professor at Oregon State University, with a teaching and research program in animal nutrition. He retired from OSU in 2000. One of his major research interests has been the study of natural toxicants in feeds and poisonous plants, particularly alkaloids in poisonous pasture weeds and toxins in potential new feedstuffs. He has written a book Natural Toxicants in Feeds, Forages, and Poisonous Plants (Prentice-Hall, 1998). He has worked with a variety of animal species, including ruminants, rabbits and poultry. He was a founder of the Oregon State University Rabbit Research Center, and is coauthor of Rabbit Production (Prentice Hall, 2000) and Rabbit Feeding and Nutrition,(Academic Press, 1987). He was honored by the western section of American Society of Animal Science with the Young Scientist Award in 1979 and the Distinguished Service Award in 2001. A little warning from me--this review speaks frankly about stool. - We rescued a German wire-haired pointer back in July and discovered quickly why he had been rejected by so many families.....he has the WORST gas of any dog you have ever met!! Have you read Walter the Farting Dog?? Well, Griffy surpasses Walter's skills at producing the worst gasser exponentially. Now....couple that with the fact that unbeknownst to us, the GWP has a propensity for coprophagia. Our vet had informed us that the GWP breed is prone to this habit, and it is the main culprit in malodorous flatus propulsus!!

Well.....fortunately, we recently came across Forti-flora. I was quite skeptical as nothing had worked since July. But we are now just about 5 days into the treatment, and his gas is GONE!! Wahoo!! Totally and completely!!

I am quite skeptical of "supplements" as typically they do not work and cost a lot. So I finally decided to take a look at the ingredients, and as a physician, I now understand why it works. The main ingredient in this product is Entercoccus faecium. This is part of a normal gut flora. Someone might correct me here, but my explanation of why this works is as follows:

So dog eats poop. Poop is composed of lots of different bacteria like E. Coli, Entercoccus species, etc. These bacteria then overpopulate the GI tract and take over, replacing the normal bacteria (normal flora) with the stink and diarrhea producing abnormal flora. This is much like the pathophysiology of an antibiotic associated diarrhea like Clostridium difficile. So now you introduce Forti-flora, or Enterococcus faecium, in sufficient quantity that it replaces the bad flora, and voila! you have restored the good GI tract organisms and the stink, diarrhea, and other problems are miraculously (not really) cured! Will be interesting to see how long the results last after a 10 day course.

So happy we found this product. It does not cure the dogs bad habits, but can certainly treat him when he gets infected with the bad stuff, which undoubtedly he will again. Just ordered a box and will keep it on hand for exacerbations/outbreaks of foul flatus/diarrhea.

I'm sure there are other products out there on the market, but I suspect simple lactobacillus or other naturalistic type items will help much (as they don't really help a lot in people either).

I hope I did not offend anyone--if I did, I apologize!

2) helped an aging dog - We have a 14 year old Corgi and he was having intestinal problems and loose stool. Since putting him on the FortiFlora all of that is much better. We were buying the product through our vet, but the price on Amazon was to good to pass up. 1) Broke after 10 minutes, but seller replaced it for me - This is probably the same moisture meter as the other ones sold on Amazon that have the same look, but Etekcity put its label on it and give it a brand. The probe is a copper tube with a lead tip. When the soil is moist, the moisture in the soil is the electrolyte, and the lead and the copper are the electrode, which together make a lead/copper battery. The voltage drives the current meter and gives a reading. Apparently, the more moist the soil is, the higher the current is.

After receiving the meter, I was excited to poke around in the yard and see the dial turn. However, after poking five holes in the soil, the lead tip broke off. I was so sad to see only the copper tube without the lead tip when I withdrew the probe from the ground. I couldn't find the lead tip because it was buried in the soil.

This is either a design flaw or a manufacturing flaw in the product, but the lead tip is attached to the copper tube only through a plastic ring. I didn't expect it to break so quickly, so I am disappointed. Seven dollars wasted.

UPDATE 07/20/2013:
After I posted the above with one star, Etekcity sent me an email and told me they can replace the meter for me. A few days later, a padded envelope arrived. Unfortunately, the probe was broken during shipping. I wrote to Etekcity, so they send me another one in a hard box quickly. That level of service really surpassed my expectations because the item was only seven bucks. Only a few days before, I just lost my dispute resolution at Ebay. A $40 cell phone part that I ordered on Ebay was lost in the mail. After 15+ emails, I simply gave up and admit my bad luck with Ebay.

After learning my lesson from the first meter, this time I use a screw driver to poke a hole on the ground before I insert the meter's probe. I planted 40+ oleanders in my yard, and many of them were head down even though I gave each of them 0.6 gallons of water every day. I measured the moisture level and found the soil to be very dry, almost no reading. I doubled the water to be about 1.3 gallons each day. The symptom seemed to be easing. I measured the moisture level again today and found the moisture level was still low (higher than last time). Now I am going to water three times a day for 2 gallons, and I'll update the result in a few days.

Five stars for Etekcity service.

2) Takes the guess work out of watering - Note: This review is on the Etekcity Indoor/Outdoor Moisture Sensor Meter. Amazon is lumping reviews on seven different meters together. That can be confusing to shoppers.

This moisture meter takes the guess work out of watering. The user inserts the probe into the soil and the red needle moves into one of three zones: DRY, MOIST, and WET. No battery is necessary. It works well. The meter itself measures 2 inches wide, 3-1/4 inches tall and 1-3/8 inches thick. The probe is about 7-9/16 inches long. It is ideal for use with indoor potted plants. It can be used for outdoor plants too. I have a word of advice for shoppers who want to so: Do not use the probe to stab the soil like a stake. It will not last long. Use a metal stake to make a hole in the soil and insert the probe into the hole. A long Philips screwdriver will do.

1) Newer technology is not always better (but tends to be more expensive either way!!) - Background you can skip

Normally I stay away from writing reviews for items that have already been throughly reviewed and compared as I can be of more help writing about the stuff no one else has tried yet. In this case, since it became such a huge unsolvable problem for us, I felt compelled to write about going 'low tech' for a change.
Here's the scoop: we moved to a new home in late 06: 4 acres, large 12,000 gallon pond, about 1 acre grass, the rest trees/wooded.
Little did we know that the previous owners had put that pond in because of the excess water in the area. The trees were virtually always, except during summer, in puddles or swamp waters. With the recent turn-to-wet climate this problem got exacerbated. Net result: swarms and swarms of mosquitoes taking over our lot. Even the UPS guy and our postie complained when they had to deliver. We had the city come out but other than once a season spraying there was no solace.
So we looked online and finally settled for what we considered the high tech solution: the Mega Catch Premier.. We bought 2 and paid heftily for those...250$ a piece. The concept was a machine that fools mosquitoes into chasing it as it presents itself to mosquito senses as a living breeding and bleeding mammal. It basically looks like a black plastic square box with some openings. In the top part of the box are colored blinking lights (led) that rotate. Aparentlhy mosquitoes see this as movement. Secondly, under those lights, there is a large computer style fan that creates downdraft...into a compartment below when you keep octenol and a bowl with sugar water and hotdog bits. (?) Kid you not.
It actually did make a dent in the population. Let us not claim it was useless, because it was not. The problem with the MC was really about maintenance, cost of maintaining and ultimately durability. Both lasted about 1.5 years before they sputtered and died. The bowls with the liquid often filled up with mosquitoes and other flying insects (millions of moths) and then dried to a hard crust. Ipso facto: clean it often!! Horrendous. Secondly, the fans would become encrusted with insect bits and ultimately jammed until you scraped them. Finally, the octenol was expensive and not easily changed (little jamming door that would make the liquids spill).
To make a long story short: super high tech concept, often claimed to be better than the even more expensive (uses propane) Mosquito magnet.
Well it was, but not for long and it was a pain to keep up with nor did we want to spend such an amount again for a half-functioning solution.

We then started to read up on websites and found the long-been-around Flowtron 80D. The smaller models did not get great ratings (albeit not half bad for dirt cheap zappers) but the BK-80D stood out. Here on Amazon it got close to an avg. of a five. Other sites, with plenty of real life desperater people in similar situations as ours, it was listed as the simpelest and most effective remedy.

About the Flowtron BK-80D
So we shelled out 2x 80$ for 2. Thanks to Prime we got them 2 days later for free (did I say I heart Amazon?).
The units are larger than you might think, and in order to show the size I added some pictures up top with my hand next to it. I am a 6ft male so you can see that these aren't small units.
The unit is not heavy but bulky and make of very sturdy plastic that apprently can handle years of UV damage. Many folks have had these uinits for 5 years plus (it seems to have been in the market since the late 90's which is proof that it is a working concept).
The 80 watt light is big and in a U shape and on the bottom you have 2 Octenol slots. You get 1 x 30 day cartridge. You do not have to use Octenol but we know it works even better with it. (you can order cheap refills online nowadays with free ship for lesst than 5$ a cartide).

The outside grills, made of plastic are horizontal but the inside electric zapper grid is vertical in orientation. More so the bottom is left relatively open apart from the Octenol slots. This is VERY important, as other devices clog up. This one: you will collecvt a heap of insect parts below it. Much easier to clean.

That else is there to say: the electric cord is about 6 inches so you need to connect it to a longer outdoor extension cable to have any type of reach. The unit has a big ring so you can hang it on a planter pole or anywhere else.

Some important tips from others that do work
We read the manual and had picked up some good pointers online: do not hang these within 20 to 25 ft from where you want to sit! Effectively this thing attracts mosquitoes and other flying mini-bloodsuckers and unless you enjoy the pain (...) you would not want to sit in a cloud of those. As one (funny!!) reviewer commented: "Capt'n, the thing does not work, it actually attracted mosquitoes and I could not sit outside anymore". This person had put the Flowtron right next to their chair. Really: 25 ft or so is perfect: one of them, this morning, had at least 300 mosquitoes hanging around on the siding, staying close to the unit taking their mid day nap. At night, sunset, they become active and the zapping kicks into hight gear.

Tip #2: fo look at the source of the mosquitoes and strategically place these. Even though it cover 1.5 acres a piece, you can get more out of it placing it close to the source of the evil. DO NOT place it where it does not stand out, ie. do not choose to hide it out of sight, place it where you need it.

#3: Determine when mosquito-twilight starts. Ours starts at 7pm and lasts until about 7 AM when they disappear to the swamps. To save electricity, the bulbs and cleaning: but a timer or a dusk-til-dawn photocell timer for 5$ and add those.

#4: use the octenol. It does help. You can buy it cheap nowadays. What is 5$ for 40 days of mosquito-slaughtering. Revenge is priceless I'd say.

#5: Hang it between 4 and 6ft from the ground, not too close to a wall. Seems most effective,others noted, we tried and saw interesting pickup in bodyparts.

Other comments:
We, at first, thought we were duped. We hubg the Flowtrons at about 5PM and the occassional zap, one every minute or so, occurred. At that rate we'd never be able to get a habitable patio/outdoors.
But BEHOLD: around 7.30 PM to 8 in the evening when the sun heat started to recede, the party began... it became a NON-STOP zapping. I literally mean 1 or 2 a second. At it lasted all night. The kids even complained that the thing kept them up all night (had one right outside their window which was open, but with bugscreen;)) . We ran out after day 1 and there was a gray circle below the Flowtron on the ground. Just insect parts. So many it was gross.
This thing killed more mosquitoes in one night than the MegaCatch did in a week I am estimating.
After 2 (!!!) nights we experienced a significant decline in attacks and give or take a week or 2 more we will be able to stay outside without the bugsprays, citronella torches, long sleeves... what a relief!!

We are truly grateful we tried Low tech! For once.

2) Cost-efficient, environmenally-sensitive bug elimination - There are several different versions of this product, each one for increasingly large areas. This one--the smallest--is good for up to half an acre of protection. It's the perfect size for a large patio or deck and a modest lawn. Some may not like the zapping sound interrupting their nighttime outdoor fun, but it is probably the most environmentally-sensitive way to rid your lawn and patio of bugs. The 15 watts of power needed to run this machine also make it one of the cheapest bug eliminators.

One of the great things about this model is unheralded in the list of features Amazon gives. With the addition of an (included) strip of UV-activated bait, it's positively lethal against mosquitos. We've found it to be much more effective than citronella torches.
About the only thing that mars this otherwise excellent device is the need to place it in front of the area you mean to protect. This would typically mean placing it away from a house, not next to it. Depending on your particular site, this can mean using extension cords, which come with their own set of safety issues. Happily, however, this is an extremely energy-efficient device, so it's definitely not going to break your electricity budget.

John Bartram was appointed Royal Botanist for North America by King George III in 1765. In that same year, John Bartram and his son William discovered franklinia growing in a 2-3 acre tract along the banks of the Altamaha River in southeastern Georgia. Franklinia has never been observed growing in any other place than along the Altamaha River. In a return trip in 1773, William Bartram collected seed from this site and brought it back to the Bartram's garden in Philadelphia where the tree was successfully grown. This tree has been extinct in the wild since 1803. It has been perpetuated in cultivation (all plants derive from the seed collected by Bartram) not only because of its rarity but also because of its attractive flowers and foliage. The current genetic base of this plant is quite narrow in large part because all plants currently in existence in the world come from the materials collected by the Bartrams. Franklinia belongs to the tea family and is closely related to Stewartia and Gordonia (loblolly bay). Genus name honors Benjamin Franklin who was reportedly a good friend of the Bartrams. 2) Great firestarter for wood stoves - Great firestarter for wood stoves.

I have two wood stoves, one is a traditional wood stove and one is an insert. Previously, we would use old newspaper and junk mail and assorted combustibles in order to get the fires in the house started on a daily basis. More recently, we've taken to using sawdust combined with wax to make fire starters for the fireplace. I got tired of the whole process of making the firestarters and turned to see what Amazon had for firestarters.

Deciding to go with the large box of Fatwood, I was not disappointed. These start almost immediately once a flame is held to them. Opening the box they have a great smell which fades in time, but we keep a large steel bucket of these on the mantle at all times. All you need to do is load up the firebox and tuck one of these in there with the damper fully open. In about 5 minutes, you'll have a roaring fire and you can go about your merry business. It is definitely worth the price for the convenience that these provide on a daily basis. Will plan on buying these again once my previous box is done!

1) You can't buy a better feeder - This feeder is the best I've had, and I have had a bunch. It has a huge capacity so you don't have to fill it very often. It is almost impossible for squirrels to stand on and if they manage to get a foothold their weight closes the feeding ports so they can't get anything. You can adjust it to exclude large birds such as starlings and grackles. When it needs to be cleaned you just put it in the dishwasher. When an especially crafty squirrel tried to chew it's way in to my feeder I informed Brome about the damage and they sent me a replacement part for free! Squirrel busters have a lifetime warranty against squirrel damage. I have had mine for about 3 years and couldn't be happier with it. If you only have one bird feeder in your life this should be the one.

2) The best feeder! - This is the second Squirrel Buster feeder I've bought. I've had the first one for over five years and am replacing an old feeder (not a Squirrel Buster). This feeder is the best feeder made to discourage squirrels from emptying seed. Our area is loaded with squirrels and they have tried everything to get to the seed in the feeder, with no luck. One time they did damage the feeding ports in an attempt to get at the sunflower seeds and when I contacted the company, they sent me a new part at no charge. Another time these darned squirrels actually chewed on the metal lid and again, the company sent me a new part. I would not hesitate to recommend this feeder to anyone, especially if you are bothered by raiding squirrels. The feeder is well made and holds quite a bit of seed (I use sunflower seeds in it)and is very easy to clean. It is well worth the cost. The customer service I've received from this company is absolutely top-notch.

1) Horse Illustrated - I started reading Horse Illustrated (HI) when I was a horse-crazy kid and I loved it. But now that I'm an adult and have gotten more serious with my riding, HI doesn't cut it anymore. It caters to both western and English riders and provides general horse care information. That means if you're looking for in-depth riding articles, you'll want to try discipline specific magazines like Practical Horseman, Dressage Today, or Horse & Rider instead.

My biggest gripe with HI is that none of the articles stick with you. Nearly every topic the magazine covers can be found in any horse care book. Also, the magazine is rather thin with LOTS of ads and breeder listings in the back.

The bottom line: If you love horses and just want a general horsey mag, you'll like HI. If you want to read something that goes more in-depth, you might want to look elsewhere.

A Great Magazine for Horselovers! - This magazine really scratches an itch when it comes to beautiful horse photos and individual breed studies, not to mention the excellent horse training articles and very important horse care information contained in each monthly edition. The attractive layout and precious letters from horsey readers (I was especially touched by the letters from owners of older horses) makes this magazine a great pick for horse-lovers of all kinds -- owners and non-owners, and very enlightening for wanna-be-owners. The advertising section in the back of the magazine is a great resource for locating breeders, tack and supplies, where to go for a weekend getaway on horse-back, and even schools that offer education in Vet/Farrier fields. I give Horse Illustrated a BLUE RIBBON!

1) Amazing Deal On The BEST Water Treatment There Is - I have been keeping fish for 30+ years.Just about every major manufacture and boutique specialty company has a water conditioning and treatment product. I can't say I've tried them all, but close too it. Some products have at the least, minimal effectiveness while others can be potentially dangerous.

An example would be Stress Coat which has binding sugar strands in the Aloe. This isn't a problem unless one of your fish has a small scratch or wound.The sugar feeds the bacteria which can lead to major infection and dire consequences.I've been using Amquel for years and it's a fine conditioner, excellent at removing chlorine, and Chloramines, but like all these products - they come with limitations.

With one exception and that's Prime by Seachem.

2) Lazy Fishkeeper - I have 245 gallon and a 180 gallon freshwater tanks with thriving fish such as discus and clown loaches that have been with me for quite a long time, thanks to using Seachem Prime.

I am a lazy fish keeper, but clean my tanks every two weeks and once a month clean out the canister filters due to high bio load. I worked a method of siphoning out ½ the old tank water, treating the tank with Prime 5x more than normal dose while adding slowly unfiltered tap water directly into the tank. The unfiltered water is approximately same temperature as existing fish tanks' water to prevent temperature shock for the tropical fish. I do not recommend this method of water changing to smaller tanks.

I am able to do this type of water change because the Prime water conditioner is really concentrated and able to quickly rid the chlorine/chloramines and the nasty ammonia and nitrates/nitrites.

I had used other brands that say are the equivalent to Prime, but they are NOT, and if you are using my method of water changing with the other brands, you may end up with DEAD fish.

My discus and clown loaches are happy swimmers, begging for food right after I am done cleaning their tanks. I know that Prime is doing its job, and I can rest and put my feet up and enjoy the clean fish tanks for another two weeks.

2) Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food - This is the top of the line grade 5 dog food! I study dog foods all the time, you can't do any better than this being it's grain free too. I have a very beautiful and large male labrador retriever, one of the largest most people see, he is a well bred one, also my best friend. The Dawn Redwood is a conifer that is native to Manchuria China and is one of only 3 types of redwood trees. These old trees are also found as fossils in areas like the badlands of N Dakota. This tree species was thought to be extinct until its rediscovery in 1944, and is currently listed as a threatened species of the highest level - critically endangered. These trees are very hardy tolerating temperatures as low as -30 F up to 100 F. These redwoods grow quickly with a growth rate of 3-5 feet a year. While they prefer full sun, they will also tolerate partial shade. These trees have lovely fern-like foliage and their trunks can exceed 8 feet in diameter. They also produce pinecones and make an excellent bonsai specimen.

My husband was delighted with the prospect of raising some dawn redwoods. Their height and majesty will enhance our forested lot and the fall color will beautify the forest. As for the saffron seeds I am interested to see what will grow as saffron as a spice is very expensive and rare. It will be nice to try raising our own spices.
