Eclipses for Eyes - Box of Secrets

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sat, 05 May 2012 04:13:00 +0000

If ever there was a band whose sound reminded me of a cross between Evanescence (having a female lead singer) and Yellowcard (the inclusion of an electric violin) Eclipses for Eyes fits the bill. Their music is solid and polished while still being unique enough to catch my ear. I won't pretend to know anything about this group but if anyone had more to share about Eclipses for Eyes feel free to chime in. Fifteen years ago when commercial radio and MTV still took chances this band may have had a future. Unfortunately in these times they will be relegated to touring the country in a van playing small shows in tiny venues. They deserve better.

Beastie Boys - Sabotage

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sat, 05 May 2012 04:05:00 +0000

Music video by The Beastie Boys performing Sabotage. The music video for Sabotage kind of made my summer back in the mid-1990s (1996 maybe?) because it was just the perfect showcase of how carefree the Beastie Boys were. They created music because they loved music and they had fun with the presentation of it. With the passing today of Adam Yauch (MCA) the music world had changed. THe Beastie Boys brand of music will be missed.

Beastie Boys - Intergalactic

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sat, 05 May 2012 04:02:00 +0000

Music video by The Beastie Boys performing Intergalactic. This song was one of the Beastie Boys' biggest hits and defined their sound in the late 1990s. Their groundbreaking sound defined a couple generations and today the music world mourns after the passing of Adam Yauch (MCA) who died after a battle with cancer.

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sat, 05 May 2012 03:59:00 +0000

Music video by The Beastie Boys performing (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party). This was definitely the breakout hit for the New York-based rap trio whose founding member, Adam Yauch (MCA) passed away today after a battle with cancer.

Lost In Atlantis - Tek No

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sun, 15 Apr 2012 15:00:00 +0000

Tek-No is the new hit single from Lost in Atlantis's debut album Silent World. Their music vid influenced by the group's futuristic dance synths and live performances tells the story of perseverance inspired by their real-life journey to be rock superstars. Space-age digital animation portrays the intergalactic drama; get Lost In Atlantis' Tek No and discover if they overcome the many perils of outer-space with the awesome power of "Rock-tron-ica"-- a genre coined by their fans.

Even though they call themselves basically an electronica-based band, Tek No by Lost in Atlantis is very much a straight-forward guitar-driven rock song that is infectious as all hell. Again, it's another one of those songs that could fill many voids in the radio landscape and if it were exposed via radio it would likely have serious mass appeal.

Uh Huh Her - Not A Love Song

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sun, 15 Apr 2012 14:54:00 +0000

It's amazing that Not a Love Song by Uh Huh Her is such a powerful song. I am not normally a fan of music whose basis is electronic in nature but the two ladies of Uh Huh Her pull this song off perfectly. If American radio stations had an ounce of taste, this song would be huge. Did I mention that there's a unicorn in the video? Well there is so check it out.

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sun, 15 Apr 2012 14:51:00 +0000

Music video by Foster The People performing Helena Beat (Live on Letterman). It just blows my mind that the audience can basically stand still during the amazing performance of what I think is Foster The People's most infectious song to date.

Childish Gambino Performs Heartbeat on Conan 11/15/2011

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sun, 15 Apr 2012 14:47:00 +0000

You might know him as Donald Glover but when he picks up the mic, he's always Childish Gambino to us. On 11/15/2011, he performed "Heartbeat" from the album "Camp" live on CONAN.

Childish Gambino - Heartbeat

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sun, 15 Apr 2012 14:45:00 +0000

In the beginning he's the leader. She willingly enters the relationship, and HE's the one driving the relationship, controlling where they are going together. Once he decides to break from control and stop pretending that she does not phase him, the relationship parks or stands still, and while they are hooking up she is smiling knowing full well that she is going to be in control from now on, and she probably always has been. Then she is the new driver. They are exes with benefits: ill-advised.

Big Talk "Getaways"

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sun, 19 Feb 2012 23:12:00 +0000

With the drummer form The Killers fronting what I happen to think is the freshest sound to hit my ears this year, Big Talk hits it out of the park on this live performance of the first single from their debut disc. "Getaways" is an upbeat straight-forward rick song that deserves some big time attention.

LANA DEL REY-VIDEO GAMES

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Mon, 16 Jan 2012 16:34:00 +0000

Following Lana Del Rey's performance of her breakout single, "Video Games" on SNL this past weekend, I have to say that her live performances need some polishing. To say that she was a bit off vocally would be far too kind. I will go ahead and assume that Lana Del Rey was all sorts of nervous to be on national TV but she was all over the place from throaty to deep and soulful and it was a trainwreck. One poor performance, especially in front of a national audience, can take quite a while to make up for in the eyes of the fickle public. Her music is still amazing and so far from what is mainstream today that it deserves recognition but she needs to calm her nerves and smooth out her vocals.

REV 105 Minneapolis-St. Paul alternative radio aircheck

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Thu, 22 Dec 2011 16:13:00 +0000

While alternative radio station REV 105 was never a huge ratings success story in Minneapolis-St. Paul or the greater Twin Cities area, its eventual assembly of three radio stations (KREV 105.1 Lakeville, WREV 105.3 Cambridge and towards the end of its three year run KCFE 105.7 Eden Prairie) spawned an uproar among the music community when ABC Radio purchased the group of three stations in 1997 and shuttered the alternative radio format to protect its of KEGE 93.7 The Edge.

While alternative radio did, again, return to the 105s -- first as Zone 105 in 1998 and again as Drive 105 in 2002 -- commercial alternative radio is likely gone forever from the Twin Cities. The final nail in the coffin of Drive 105 was the launch of 89.3 The Current which managed to assemble for REV 105 and Zone 105 DJs like Mary Lucia and Mark Wheat. While The Current is an amazing radio station in its own right, there is definitely room for a commercial alternative rock station in the Twin Cities and 105 was the right place to do it.

With rumors about 105's new owners (Cumulus Broadcasting) looking to launch a News/Talk format on one of its FM properties, it seems that music may have sung its final swansong on those frequencies in the way of oldies as Love 105. Oh well, that's just one of the many problems with commercial broadcasters and it's why I'm thankful for 89.3 The Current and my iPod.

Rise Against - Satellite

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Thu, 03 Nov 2011 16:53:00 +0000

Until today I had never come uncooss an "unlisted" YouTube video but Satellite by Rise Against is worthy of some extra attention. The band's lyrics as a whole are powerful and full of meaning but "Satellite" is a cut above the rest. It's angsty and deep and powerful.

Local H - All The Kids Are Right

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Wed, 17 Aug 2011 17:41:00 +0000

If it weren't for where I grew up and a hot summer day catching Rock 108 from the distant city of Waterloo, IA I never would have heard of Local H or this song -- "All the Kids Are Right". It still lives on my iPod today.

Weezer - The Good Life

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Tue, 02 Aug 2011 14:12:00 +0000

Weezer, one of the most influential bands of the 1990s, is definitely not a one trick pony. Their debut album, the self titled disc coined "the blue album", is one of the most perfect albums through the entirety of its tracks and "The Good Life" is as good as any other track and still holds up amazing well nearly 20 years after its debut.

Welcome to the real Storytellers. Adele sits down in front of a camera and poignantly tells the story behind "Someone Like You". That's how a real artist writes, performs and shares stories. Amazing.

Atmosphere - She's Enough

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Thu, 14 Jul 2011 02:46:00 +0000

This is Atmosphere's most heartfelt and playful video to date. Maybe it's because somewhere deep down inside my dark soul I have s oft spot for cute little kids and this video has that spot nailed -- especially nailing the whole puppy love aspect of being five or six years old. Face it. Atmosphere is the kind of rap music this world needs and the fact that Brother Ali has a cameo in this video goes even further to prove the the entire Rhymesayers label is the coolest thing to come out of Minnesota since maybe 89.3 The CUrrent who brought real Minnesota music to the masses.

Modest Mouse - Float On

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sat, 02 Jul 2011 15:25:00 +0000

For being married to Zooey Deschanel, Death Cab For Cutie's lead singer Ben Gibbard is a rather sad and melancholy guy.

Mashable calls this video a combination of Lykke Li and Lady Gaga. I'm not quite sure about that comparison but this experimental musical storytelling project from Swedish singer-songwriter Jonna Lee is the strangest, most wonderful piece of music/art I have seen in quite some time.

Social Distortion - When The Angels Sing

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Mon, 09 May 2011 17:46:00 +0000

A YouTube commenter had this to say: "Mike Ness is a perfect spiritual successor to Johnny Cash and a pure rock icon if one will ever live." While I don't know if Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness is the second coming of Johnny Cash there are definite similarities. Whatever your thoughts, check out some more of Social D's fabulous catalog of work.
