Making Violin at Gliga in Romainia

Gliga make a wide range of violins from the Genial, for early students and beginners to the Master, which is intended for Orchestral and Solo performers. At the moment we are stocking the Genial, the Gems II both with a two piece back and a one piece back, the Gems I and the Gama but we expect to stock a greater range as space becomes available.

There is no doubt that Gliga violins are quite special, maybe it’s the carefully selected and well seasoned tone woods, maybe the precision and dedication to detail when making the instruments but they do sound better than most violins at the same price.

We particularly like the warm G and D string, the well focused A string and the bell like E string. You could never describe a Gliga violin as raucous or shrill, more warm or dark. They have proved great favourites with our customers and you’ve only got to see the positive comments on various violin forums to know that these are pretty special instruments.

At the moment we are only stocking full size Gliga violins but we can supply smaller sizes to special order. It takes about 2 weeks to get them to the UK. Wherever possible we add them to a stock order to keep the carriage costs from Romania as low as possible.

Gliga also make Electric and left hand versions of their violins and again we are happy to order those on special order.

Villanova University

Further investigation showed the the Villanova University have a “String Repair” course and the introductory lessons recommend reading our web page on the setup of the violins that we sell. You can find our page here

Needless to say we are really pleased about this link and the fact that the University feels that our setup page is good enough to use as a reference for their students. Must be getting something right

Kaplan Artcraft Light Rosin

Our latest Rosin addition is Kaplan Art Craft Rosin. A sort of medium priced offering but very well liked by many people. It’s still made to the original recipe and like most manufacturers it’s all very secret.  We’re only stocking the Light version at the moment, there is a stickier Dark version available and we’ll probably have  that in stock soon.  See Rosins Here

Pirastro Goldflex Rosin

Just added a new rosin to the Web Site.

We’ve just received stocks of the very popular rosin,  Pirastro Goldflex, a very upmarket and professional rosin that really does have minute flecks of gold within it. According to users the addition of the gold makes the bow hair grip the strings better but very smoothly giving a consistent and clear tone but with very little dust. Many professional violinists use and recommend this rosin so we’re very happy to have it  for sale on our Web Site. Click to see Rosins.

Junior Master Violin

Just been working on the first of the Eastman Strings Young Master violins. Really nice instrument with very clever antiquing, you’d be hard pressed to know whether this really was a new instrument or one made a 100 or so years ago. It’s a handmade instrument and it really shows in the quality of the construction, it’s also very light, which is usually a sign of a good violin.

We’ve fitted Dominant strings for now and after a couple of  hours of playing they have settled down and the balance from string to string has improved. Dominants do tend to have a metallic edge when they are first fitted but once they’ve been played for a while they become much more mellow and rounded. I’m quite impressed with this violin and it was no chore to give it a good play in. This is going to be a good violin for those players who can’t quite justify spending on an Eastman Strings Master Violin, ideal for the serious player in an amateur orchestra.
