Adele - the queen of karaoke

2012-01-17T07:15:00.001+00:00

Adele has been crowned 2011's karaoke queen after it was revealed almost one in four singers chose one of her songs when they picked up a microphone.

Her number one hit Someone Like You was the most sung karaoke song of the year accounting for 14 per cent of all the three million songs sung by 100,000 users of the Lucky Voice website.

Adele's version of Bob Dylan's Make You Feel My Love was the second most popular choice picked by 10 per cent of singers and Rolling In The Deep also figures in the top 10.

The managing director of Lucky Voice, Nick Thistleton, said: "Adele has got one of the greatest voices in contemporary pop so it's no surprise our customers want to test themselves against the best and pick her songs in such overwhelming numbers."

The star looks set to make her UK live comeback at the Brit Awards, three months after surgery to cure a voice-threatening condition.

She underwent an operation in the US in early November after being diagnosed with a vocal cord haemorrhage which could have wrecked her singing voice forever.

But she has now been lined up to perform at next month's awards bash which takes place at the O2 Arena.

It marks a return to the event which kick-started her career, following last year's show-stopping performance of Someone Like You.

The influence of the X Factor can also be seen in the top five with the show's version of David Bowie's Heroes and One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful at numbers three and four respectively.

Jessie J came in fifth with Price Tag.

The guy from The Script on The Voice UK

2012-01-17T07:07:00.001+00:00

You may have read in the papers that Will Young was to be one of the judges on the BBC’s new “answer to X Factor” The Voice. But somewhat mysteriously, Danny O’Donoghue of The Script has been confirmed as the final face behind the desk and, perhaps not uncoincidentally, Will has posted a cryptic but bitter sounding tweet. Has it all gone off the rails before it’s begun?

According to The Sun, the judging panel for the UK version of this Dutch talent show was to be Jessie J (oh god), Will.I.Am (oh god), Tom Jones (hurrrrrggg!) and Will Young (quite good). Well they were three quarters right.

The final judge has now been confirmed as Danny from The Script (the one they didn’t have to hide at the back of photos). The frontman for the briefly successful Irish manband will join his fellow singing experts when the show starts on the Beeb in the Spring.

But how does Will Young feel about it? Yesterday’s tweet might give us some idea:
@will_young31 Words escape me. Life is sometimes a bitch
Or maybe someone had eaten all his Percy Pigs. Who knows?

As far as we can figure out, the main differences between The Voice and X Factor are that the judges choose who gets through in a “blind audition” (presumably so “uglies” stand a chance) and then instead of a boot camp there’s a “Battle phase” where contestants sing the same song to see which is best. That sounds quite good.

The hosts for The Voice UK will be Holly Willoughby and Reggie Yates. That doesn’t sound quite so good.

will.i.am joins The Voice UK

2012-01-16T07:08:00.001+00:00

Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am will join Jessie J as two of the four coaches on next spring’s The Voice UK. The seven-time Grammy winner told BBC1, which will air the music competition, “I’m proud to be doing The Voice UK because the UK was the first place I saw success. It’s the place I’m the most creative outside of home.”

BBC1 controller Danny Cohen says: “I am thrilled that will.i.am has signed up to be a Coach on The Voice. He is a huge star who will bring a unique creativity to the show.”

The Voice UK judges will be encouraging

2012-01-16T06:41:00.001+00:00

Judges on new show The Voice have agreed to be encouraging

For the past decade Simon Cowell's caustic put-downs to desperate singers drove an era of mean TV where it seemed the nastier the treatment the higher the ratings.
Every new talent show launched around the world needed its own version of Mr Nasty, from acid-tongued Aussie Jason Gardiner on Dancing On Ice to Cowell clone Piers Morgan on America's Got Talent.
But moods are changing and, according to senior industry figures, 2012 is likely to herald an era where TV finally turns nice. BBC1's highly anticipated new Saturday night talent show, The Voice, which launches in the spring, features friendly faces Holly Willoughby and Reggie Yates as hosts.
The biggest contrast to its main rival, The X Factor, is that the judges - Tom Jones, Jesse J, Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.I.Am and Danny O'Donoghue (from rock band The Script, apparently) - have an agreement with producers that they will offer only positive encouragement to the singers who audition.
Soul-destroying feedback is being replaced by uplifting motivation, which Beeb bosses believe will be a ratings winner in the current climate and was behind its decision to splash out £22 million on the Dutch format.
In the U.S., The Voice, with the same positive approach, outperformed the recently launched American version of The X Factor. In fact, Cowell - the architect of mean TV - has been forced to significantly lighten his show by adding upbeat video packages featuring the contestants in church and with their families.
Back here, many in the industry have attributed the ratings fall suffered by The X Factor this year compared with main rival Strictly Come Dancing to the difference in tone between the two shows.
Viewers reacted against the constant rows between Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland, Tulisa Contostavlos and Louis Walsh on the ITV show. Meanwhile, over on Strictly, even resident villain Craig Revel Horwood lost some of his infamous bite, with his criticisms more pantomime than spiteful.
There are a number of factors behind the decision by TV executives to launch lighter, more inspirational shows and soften those they believe have become too negative.

The Voice vs The X Factor!

I remember some time ago, televisionwithoutpity did a piece comparing NBC's The Voice with American Idol. Yes, they were right to compare the two, since everyone looked at The Voice as an answer to Idol's popularity, but I believe it's not really fair for The Voice to be have to stand against the ratings king of the last years. That's why I'm gonna put The Voice and the new Fox show, The X Factor USA, alongside. I'll use the same system as twp. Let's go!

MTV EMA 2011: Jessie J to get Chris Martin for The Voice!

2011-11-07T13:18:00.001+00:00

JESSIE J made a cracking entrance by exploding out of a giant safe on stage.

She then nearly lifted the roof off the Odyssey Arena with her song Price Tag.

Looking purr-fect in a slinky leopard print dress last night, Jessie also presented a touching video tribute to the late Amy Winehouse put together by fans.

The feisty star told me before her performance that she wants Coldplay crooner Chris Martin working with her on new show The Voice.

They were on the EMA bill too and she vowed to hunt him down and get him on her team for the talent show.

Jessie, 23, told me: “I’ll say to him, ‘Chris Martin. Be part of The Voice UK with me. If you’re not going be on the panel, come and be on my team. Let’s go.’ He’ll probably say no, though.”

The singer is so far the only confirmed member of the BBC1 show’s coaches panel.

They’ll mentor contestants who audition “blind” so they are judged on their voices alone.

She added: “I also want Lenny Kravitz to join the panel because he is just so fit.”

Well, a girl has needs, you know...

Will Young, judge on The Voice UK?

2011-11-07T13:04:00.001+00:00

Will Young is apparently being lined up to join the judging panel of new BBC talent contest The Voice UK.

Programme bosses - who are said to have ruled out Kylie Minogue because her appearance fee was too high - are weighing up whether Pop Idol winner Will should join Jessie J as a mentor on the show, The Sun reports.

Other names being linked to the series, which is being seen as the BBC's answer to The X Factor, include Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am and Welsh crooner Tom Jones.

A source told the newspaper: "Will is seen as a middling star who would fit around other people."

The hit US version of The Voice featured Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green as coaches.

Kylie Minogue rumored as The Voice UK judge!

2011-11-06T15:39:00.001+00:00

Bosses at The Voice UK really are going all out to get some top musical coaches, offering a reported £1 million for Kylie Minouge to join Jessie J in the panel. The BBC however are apparently finding it hard to negotiate with stars for the show.

Talks are currently underway between bosses and number of musical superstars – including Kylie, Will.i.am, Tom Jones, Robbie Williams and even Adele.

But the financially struggling BBC is finding itself unable to shell out the multi-million pound deals rivals like ITV can offer.

The Sun claim that Kylie Minogue, whose sister Dannii used to judge on the X Factor, had originally wanted £2.5 million for the show.

Coming at a time of huge job cuts at the channel, the request was never going to go down well, and it would make Kylie the highest paid BBC talent.

But a source said: “We won’t break the bank for anyone.”

Mark Owen on The Voice UK judges?

2011-11-06T15:33:00.001+00:00

Take That star Mark Owen is in talks to join The Voice UK, in competition with bandmate Gary Barlow on The X Factor! According to the Daily Star Sunday, BBC bosses want the man band singer to join the panel alongside Jessie J.

“Getting Mark to sign up would be a huge scoop for The Voice,” a source told the newspaper. “The format has been a massive success in America and the BBC are determined to make sure they get the highest quality of judges possible.

“Gary has been a big hit on X Factor and Beeb bosses love the idea of getting one of his bandmates to go head-to-head against him on a rival show.”

The new series – which sees contestants perform to judges who have their backs to the stage – will start on BBC One in the new year.

Only Jessie J has signed up for the show, with three more musical coaches to be announced over the coming months. Rumours have included Aussie pop princess Kylie, Welsh crooner Tom Jones and former X Factor judge Cheryl Cole.

“Ideally producers want a huge international name but they also want a home-grown megastar,” the insider added. “Although Jessie J is big right now, she’s relatively new.

“Mark is perfect because he’s not only had a hugely successful 20-year career, he’s also relevant now. And signing him up to be a rival to Gary is even more of an incentive.”

Is Will.i.am really joining The Voice UK?

2011-11-04T17:40:00.001+00:00

While the Black Eye Peas are on hiatus, looks like Will.i.am may have already lined up another gig.

The BEP frontman may soon join the cast of mentors on the UK version of The Voice, reports The Sun. As of now, Jessie J has been confirmed for the UK lineup.

Other possible mentors in the running include Cee Lo Green, Lenny Kravitz and Tom Jones.

The U.S. version of The Voice on NBC currently features Cee Lo, Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton, and has spawned the Maroon 5 smash collab featuring mentors Adam and Christina, "Moves Like Jagger."

Mary J. Blige, in talks for judge role

2011-11-04T17:34:00.001+00:00

Mary J Blige is in talks to star in new BBC singing show The Voice UK.

The 40-year-old could join Jessie J and other possible judges including Tom Jones when the series hits the screens early next year.

R&B star Mary said: “I have been approached and we have been in discussions. I’m not sure if I’m doing it right now.”

The BBC is hoping to get stars for the show with long careers in the business. Mary has had eight multi-platinum albums and nine Grammy awards – meaning she fits the bill perfectly.

The winner of the first series of The Voice UK will sign with Universal Music, it has been revealed. Universal, who looks after some of the UK’s biggest stars – including former X Factor judge Cheryl Cole – will take charge of the music career of the singer crowned ‘The Voice UK’

It has also been confirmed today that the show’s format will match that of the US one, featuring blind auditions, battle rounds and, finally, the live shows.

By the final, the four coaches will each have one at left in their group, who will all go head to head with one another in the grand final.

Only one can walk away with the top prize of a recording contract with Universal.

The Voice of Ireland coaches revealed!

2011-10-12T08:24:00.001+01:00

RTÉ and Screentime ShinAwil have announced the names of the four coaches who will join presenters Kathryn Thomas and Eoghan McDermott on The Voice.
Westlife's Kian Egan, Sharon Corr, Brian Kennedy and former The Blizzards singer turned solo artist, Bressie will share their experience and knowledge of the Irish music industry with hopefuls who enter the competition.
Entrants will be in with a chance to win a recording contract with Universal Music but first they have to work their way through three stages in The Voice.

The first is a blind audition, the second is a singing battle and the final stage are the live performance shows.
During the blind auditions the mentors will be seated with their backs to the singers, and their decisions are based solely on the contestant's voice. If a coach is impressed by the voice, they push the 'I Want You' button and their chair turns to face the singer.
If more than one coach pushes the button, the power shifts to the singer and they get to decide which coach they want to work with.

The Voice UK, not mean, unlike The X Factor

2011-10-10T09:58:00.000+01:00

Jessie J has said that she could not have become a judge on The X Factor because she does not like to see people being made into "a laughing stock".

The 'Price Tag' star, Jessie J was announced as the first coach on BBC One's new singing competition The Voice UK earlier this week. Speaking to The Sun, she said that the new coaching role is a better fit for her.

"I don't support The X Factor putting through people that are just going to be made a laughing stock," she said. "That is one of the reasons why I won't be a judge on that show. That is not how I think the industry should be. "The Voice is a show where I think I fit. The idea of being a coach and an inspiration and a mentor rather than a judge is something I can relate to."

Jessie J continued:

"I only start on The Voice after the people have been filtered through who can really sing. It is not people who are going to be laughed at for entertainment.
"And it's them picking us. It's not me turning anyone down - it is them turning me down. It's about spontaneity. It's going to be an amazing experience."

Jessie J appeared as a guest mentor during the Judges' Houses stage of The X Factor, helping Tulisa Contostavlos choose her four finalists.

"I was there to support Tulisa. I was just very blunt with her. This industry is about the work ethic," she said. "If they have got the talent but not the work ethic then it may not work. The music industry isn't just puppy dogs and rainbows. It is hardcore."

However, the singer said that she hopes she can return to the ITV1 show to mentor and perform during the live stages "if they will have me".

Jessie J wants singers to write their songs on The Voice UK

2011-10-10T09:51:00.000+01:00

The first of four judges on The Voice UK, Jessie J, has said that she wants contestants on the new reality series to write and perform their own music on the show. Talking after being revealed as the first coach of the BBC One talent search, the British singing sensation said she didn’t want to hear covers being performed.

Speaking to The Sun, Jessie explained: “I want my artists to start writing songs straight away, if they haven’t already.”

The hip hop star, who picked up four Mobo awards this week, also insisted she wouldn’t make the show about herself: “If people want to whip up boring stories that are totally unrelated to the programme they can do that, but I am going to be totally focusing on what I need to be doing.”

Meanwhile with Jessie J confirmed, there’s still three “musical superstars” to be revealed – but Jessie insists she’s being kept in the dark just like the rest of us!

“I have no idea who else is doing it,” she said.

Stars linked to the show include Lenny Kravitz, Robbie Williams, Will Young and Adele.
