Welcome to 'The Walking Cave Man', a fantastic reference guide to walking in the East Riding of Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Wolds.

'The Walking Cave Man' is an extremely useful resource to unearth the fabulous walking within the East Riding of Yorkshire, providing details on over 700 miles of walking routes, maps, route descriptions and footpaths showcasing the beautiful countryside and villages in the county, also including information of many other routes and paths.

The purpose of this site is to provide information and interesting walks to enjoy within the Yorkshire Wolds and East Yorkshire, however does include walks in The Yorkshire Dales and The Lake District.

Short Walk - South Cave to Everthorpe circular

This is a superb walk around the south wolds villages of South Cave and Everthorpe, taking in Little Wold Plantation and depending upon route, the dales of Drewton and Coomber and North Cave. The longer route totals 7.5 miles, the shorter route being 4.5 miles.

The walk follows well established footpaths and navigation is easy, therefore allows for walkers to appreciate the fantastic scenery the area has to offer including expansive views over the River Humber.

The walk can be started from various locations along the route, however there is plenty of parking in South Cave, top of Little Wold Plantation close to the chalk quarry or if choosing the longer walk in North Cave.

The Walking Cave Man wondering - Snowdon

On what was a fine, warm, clear sunny day, the KC Walking Group set off from Pen-y-pass (after catching the park and ride from Gwastadnant), heading out with the goal of ascending Snowdon by following the well established Miners footpath returning via Pyg Path.

The first part of the walk was fairly flat, with only a small number of inclines, therefore allowing us to take in the stunning scenery, take our first look of Snowdon and our summit designation and importantly providing us with breathtaking views to photograph before the hard work started.

Following the path, taking us passed and across the large tarns of Llyn-Teyrn, Llyn-Llydaw, Glaslyn and an old mine, we reached the start of the main ascent (point ‘A’). The view to the summit looked daunting, however the precession of walkers ascending the path looked undeterred and the hikers returning from the top looked as though the effort to the trig was not going to be unrewarding.

Heading up and keeping to the stone stepped path, the hike to the ridge (point ‘B’) was not a difficult one and within an hour and a half the overcrowded trig point was visible, although a hard earned rest was taken at the seemly purpose built half way point, facing down the valley allowing us to surveying the steep route we had walked.

Before battling to the summit, through hoards of walkers (even though the train was not running due to snow) and touching the top, it was an opportunity to take advantage of the superb weather and clear visibility to appreciate the breathtaking panoramic views of Snowdonia.

With the trig point eventually reached and squeezing up to have a picture taken, we all sat down to lunch, taking in the summit atmosphere (which was now like visiting Old Trafford on a Saturday afternoon) contemplating our return walk to the café at Pen-y-pass via the Pyg track.

Leaving the summit and negotiating the queues of walkers all desperate to get to the top and join the remaining limpets stuck to the trig point, we retraced our steps to point ‘C’; this being the junction to the Pyg track. By following the rocky path, passing many walkers in the early stages of their Snowdon journey, the stone stepped descent to the finish was straight forward, being helped along by the thought of a cold drink at the Pen-y-pass café.

My Snowdon adventure was a day full of stunning scenery, walking a fantastic route and spending this experience with some superb friends ….. Wonderful!

Two new Geocaches have been hidden within Little Wold Plantation, located near South Cave, East Yorkshire- These now make up eight Walking Cave Man caches, creating a fantastic linear walk through this plantation, Comber Dale and Low Hunsley Plantation, following the famous Yorkshire Wolds Way.

The Windmill Way

This 26 mile route is utilised by the 1st Skidby Scouts as a challenge event called ‘The Windmill Way”, however is a rewarding walk at any time, taking in six wonderful East Riding of Yorkshire villages, the rolling hills and dales of the Yorkshire Wolds and the magnificent Skidby Windmill.

Much of the walk follows other well established walks detailed on the area’s OS map (OS Explorer 293) i.e. The High Hunsley Circuit, The Beverley Twenty and The Yorkshire Wolds Way, to name a few, all following well established way marked public footpaths and bridal ways, therefore not a difficult route to navigate if familiar with the area.

If walking as an anytime challenge, the walk can be started from any village along the route, however plenty of road side parking is available in Welton, South Cave and Skidby therefore advisable to commence from one of these locations.

Please note that the ’Windmill Way’ challenge walk makes use of permissive paths and therefore not usually open at any other time, therefore please ensure that if this is being undertaken as an anytime challenge ensure that my route is followed.

From the war memorial within South Cave (entrance to Cave Castle hotel) at GR SE9155 3093, head west along West End road turning into Northfield close, picking up the public footpath at GR SE9123 3098 leading to Etherthorpe to GR SE9070 3188.

From Etherthorpe the route heads east along the main road into the village until meeting Station Road (A1034) at GR SE9194 32212. Crossing this busy road (please take care) take the road directly opposite (Swinescaif Road) walking up a steep hill, passing a disused quarry and Little Wold Plantation, until reaching GR SE9371 3256 at Comber Dale and joining the Yorkshire Wolds Way.

Comber Dale

Head down Comber Dale towards Low Hunsley Plantation, ensuring that at GR SE9364 32987 the right hand footpath is followed until reaching a footpath junction at GR SE9422 3395 (Hunsley Dale). Taking the right hand path pass through the plantation reaching the Brick Dike Lane at GR SE9498 3471.

Low Hunsley Plantation

Upon reaching Brick Dike Lane head south along the road for 2 1/2 miles to GR SE9625 3185 turning left to Rowley Manor. Using the public footpath at GR SE9729 3234 and passing the manor, head towards Little Weighton taking Dunflat Road to GR TA0031 3467.

At this point turn left towards Walkington, joining up shortly with the Beverley Twenty and the High Humsley Circuit routes, until reaching Risby Park Farm taking the public footpath crossing Silver Fir Plantation at GR SE9985 3548 meeting up with Coppleflat Lane at GR TA0128 3584.

Walk south along the road for 100 yards picking up a further footpath at GR TA0134 3575 which sweeps under Folly Wood until again meeting Dunflat Road. The route now heads towards Skidby using the footpath at GR TA0132 3522.

St Michael's Church and Main Street, Skidby

Upon reaching Skidby follow 'Main Street' through the village, passing St Michael's Churchand then turning right onto Beverley Road at GR TA0206 3371. Walk south, passed Skidby Mill to the right until the Millhouse restaurant car park. Pick up the public footpath at GR TA0204 3334 by walking towards Gallows Hill passing close to the mill on the right to GR TA0122 3293.

Taking the right hand path head back into Skidby passing a cemetery linking up again with the Beverley Twenty/High Hunsley Circuit at GR TA0095 3323. From this location head west for 2 1/2 miles until reaching a main road at GR SE9756 31478 - Crossing the road, walk through York Grounds Farm and follow the footpath directly in Welton, taking the route through Welton Dale at GR 9668 2925.

Before reaching Welton Chruch, take the first turning on the right (High Road) and follow until GR SE9493 2837 where the route heads through Scarborough Wold Plantation reaching Spout Hill at GR SE 9472 2986.

Spout Hill heading into Brantingham

Walk down Spout Hill towards Ellerker North Plantation at GR SE9436 3065 using the footpath which leads to Brantingham church at GR SE 9444 2975. Follow the footpath, turning right at Wooddale Farm, towards Mount Airy Farm by climbing the steepest hill of the walk. Turning left and walking through the farm, the route heads back into South Cave by using the steep footpath at GR SE9328 3133.

Meeting Beverley Road, turn right and walk into the village centre, taking Church Street opposite to the finish by passing the village primary school and the grounds of Cave Castle hotel.

Pocklington Canal Circular

Route

This walks starts from the car park close to the first of the beautifully restored locks at Canal Head just off the A1079 south of Pocklington. The full Pocklington Canal walk is 9.5 miles ending at Storwood, however this circular route takes in the villages of Sutton upon Derwent and Allerthorpe.

The full route is 16.5 miles long, however a shorter path splitting at GR SE74748 44534 (just north of Melbourne) and rejoining the longer route at Allerthorpe Common and Nature Reserve (GR SE75791 47078) is detailed on the route map above in black.

All the locks along the canal are named and therefore being detailed on the OS map makes it simple to navigate to Hagg Bridge, south of Sutton upon Derwent. The long distance path 'The Wilberforce Way' is also way marked to this point.

By following the canal to Hagg Bridge the route heads north west towards Gravelpit Farm and then north onto Sutton upon Derwent to GR SE70729 46811 - Please note that the road from Hagg Bridge to this GR is busy therefore please take care.

From Sutton upon Derwent take the public footpath to GR SE71113 4676 where there is an option to take the public footpath north to Sandhill Lane and head east towards 'The Street' at GR SE74796 47690 or take the track towards Woodhouse Grange and meet Sandhill Lane at GR SE73229 47248.

St. Botolph's - Allerthorpe

Upon reaching Allerthorpe Common take the public footpath towards Allerthorpe onto Hodsow Lane passing St. Botolph's Church, before carefully crossing the A1079.

Following Hodsow Lane the route heads in a horse shoe direction back to the A1079 opposite the starting location at Canal Head.

A Walking Cave Man Highlighted Event

This years Capability's Overview challenge walk will be held on the 19th May. This event is held by the Sledmere Parish Council in association with the LDWA.

This is a unique opportunity to walk a route around the Sledmere area using paths not usually open to the public, by utilising private land opened up to the event by land owners.

The route slightly differs from year to year dependent upon land cropping and stocking, therefore the map and GPX file below may change and should only be used as a reference guide.

Falcon Flyer

A 20 or 15 miles walk over the coastal moors of the North York Moors - The 2013 even will take place on Saturday 16th March 2013 with a mass start at 9.00. The event is being held to raise funds for the Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team. For entry form and further details (GPX file)

The Woldsman

A 50 mile walk over the Yorkshire Wolds - an event which I've never taken part in, however would love to try at some point in the next couple of years. The next event is to take place on the 13th & 14th April 2013.

Yorkshire Three Peaks - A new alternative route from Pen-y-ghent

I have walked Pen-y-ghent a number of times and completed the the Yorkshire Three Peaks for the first time this year. I have always been saddened by the badly-eroded paths leading up this magnificent mountain and also the erosion caused by the thousands of walkers taking on the Y3P challenge every year across Horton Moor and Black Dudd to reach Whernside.

I was glad to read therefore the National Park (in conjunction with partners and volunteers) have completed a new path to combat damage being caused across this particular part of the Y3P route - After contacting the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority I understand from the Area Ranger & Project Manager of the Three Peaks that the new section runs from the Pennine Way at SD 8231 7426 to SD 8103 7489 where it rejoins the traditional route. The new section includes three sections of stepped flag stones and a small footbridge across Sell Gill Beck.

The new alternative route incorporates the existing path back to Horton in Ribblesdale from Pen-y-ghent which, as many walkers will already know, is a well established gravel path and therefore eradicating the problem of erosion moving elsewhere.

It is hoped that traditionalist will understand the reasoning for this new route (although it's still only described as an alternative) and use, however looking at routes some walkers still take by cutting off corners coming off the mountain and ignoring signs to follow the prepared path this may be unlikely, although hopefully the majority of walkers will see the benefits and the hard work the National Park have invested in this part of the Yorkshire Dales and help to preserve the moorland.

From my experience the majority of paths navigating up and down the three peaks have all had attention to help the problem of erosion apart from the route up Pen-y-ghent from Horton in Ribblesdale via Brackenbottom and therefore hopefully this will be the next section of the route that will be given badly needed attention.

A Risby Ramble

Although this flat six and a half mile walk can be started from a couple of locations along the route, I have chosen to set off from the charming East Yorkshire village of Walkington.

The route utilises a number of well established public footpaths and longer distance walking routes (in particular the Beverley 20 and the High Hunsley Circuit) taking in the beautiful village of Skidby.

By following an alternative path, marked on the map above in black, the walk also passes Skidby Mill (the additional route adds a further two and a half miles to the walk).

This figure of eight walk starts at the Walkington children’s play park where parking is available (detailed on the route map) and heads in an anti clockwise direction at GR TA60168 36855.

All Hallows Church, Walkington

The route heads west, first passing the All Hallows Church to GR SE99529 36731, taking the minor road south to Halfpenny Gate Cottage onto Risby Park Farm, passing the site of an old medieval village of Risby until meeting the Dunflat Road at GR TA00316 34674.

Looking back to Walkington from Dunflat Road

From Dunflat Road the route heads south towards Skidby following the High Hunsley Circuit, detailed on the OS map, at GR TA00681 34786 - upon reaching Skidby the walk can head back to Walkington using a footpath that skirts the north of the village and rejoins the alternative route at Church Rise (X).

The alternative route is picked up by heading south into the village heading towards the cemetery at GR TA00966 33216. By following this footpath, ensuring to take the turn over Gallows Hill at GR TA01226 32941 the route passes the local landmark of Skidby Mill.

Leaving Skidby Mill the route follows Beverley Road back into Skidby, passing Skidby Hill Farm and turning left into the village (Main Street). Upon reaching St Michael's Parish Church the route turns right into Church Rise passing the Methodist Church, where it picks up the shorter route (X) , meeting the alternative Beverley 20 route back to Dunflat Road.

Crossing Dunflat Road and walking through Fishpond Wood the route briefly meets the main road back into Walkington, although the route takes the next available footpath at GR TA01264 35836 onto Silver Fir Plantation and returning to the High Hunsley Circuit at Risby Park Farm.

Following the footpath back to Walkington the route branches right at Halfpenny Gate Cottages to cross Walkington Plantation emerging close to All Hallows Church. By turning right the path leads back to the playing field and the car park.

Brief walk details

This is a well known circular walk around the Howden countryside taking in some pleasant East Riding villages and expansive views over the River Ouse and farm land in the area. The walk can be started from various locations along the route however I chose to commence the walk from a free car park close to Howden town centre.

Upon leaving Howden and crossing the M62, the walk really kicks off by meeting the Trans Pennine Trail for a period of time, following the river Ouse towards Boothferry, passing the old ship yard and walking under the large bridge where the M62 crosses the river.

The route passes through the villages of Asselby and Wressle before reaching a long straight path heading towards Willitoft, marking the half way point of the walk. From Willitoft the walk passes through Spaldington before heading towards Howden Parks and eventually to the starting point of the walk.

Although not a walk that has the undulating dales of the Yorkshire Wolds, for a walker with experience of walking twenty miles or someone who wishes to try a longer route, this is an easy flat walk with pleasant scenery and some interesting features.

This was the first time I had entered the event and one I had been looking forward to competing (the only other LDWA event I'd entered before was the Rudolf Romp).

I walked this on my own, however joined up with a group of walkers who seemed to know where they were going!! (although a detailed route description had been handed out). The route changes each year as it mainly follows none public footpaths over private land and is dictated by land cropping at the time of the walk. This makes the event different to all other I've walked making it a challenge and also interesting to compete in.

The route is a really nice walk, made better this year as the rain held off. I eventually finished in 8 hrs 5 mins, although feel a better time could have been achieved if I'd entered the event before and knew the general the route.

A fantastic day out and would recommend.

An official LDWA even held from the Budest Centre at Kilnwick Percy Hall - A fantastic walk over the Yorkshire Wolds passing through the beautiful village of Thixendale.

This was by third LDWA event I had taken part in and has been my favourite so far. I selected the longer of the two routes available - The route is difficult in places due to somes rather steep hills.

Unfortunately the event from this year has now been cancelled due to a management change at Kilnwick Hall, which is a massive shame, however the event has been replaced by a new event 'A Sterne Encounter' which is being held on the 30th June 2012

Route

The North Dalton walk is a pleasant route through some of East Yorkshire's less busy area's skirting past the villages of Huggate and and Wetwang, following well established footpaths including The Chalkands Way and The Minster Way.

From North Dalton the route follows The Minter Way meeting The Chalklands Way at GR SE849 540 passing Blanch Farm and later High Farm at a road crossing (GR SE858 536).

From this point the walk heads west towards Huggate passing South Grange Farm and Glebe Farm at GR SE874 558.

The route follows The Chalklands Way through Shortlands Plantation to GR SE937 575 heading south through Tibthorpe Wold back towards North Dalton passing Angus Farm towards the finish.

This is a 18 mile walk, however comprises of flat countryside walking and therefore a great route for walkers with varying abilities wanting to experience a long distance path.

Route

This route starts in Wetwang near Driffiled, although the walk can really be started in any of the picturesque villages along the way.

The walk takes in the four beautiful East Yorkshire's villages of Wetwang, Huggate, Fridaythopre and Fimber, following well established footpaths and links up with the Yorkshire Wolds Way and the Chalklands Way (both paths have dedicated websites (Chalklands Way, Yorkshire Wolds Way), passing through a number of rolling dales including Holme Dale and Cow Dale.

From Wetwang the route starts of by heading south through Thorn Dale following the Chalklands Way to Huggate, crossing a country path at GR SE902 554 (Fox Farm).

From just outside of Huggate the route joins the Yorkshire Wolds Way at GR SE882 559 heading north through Holme dale towards Fridaythorpe.

Leaving Fridaythorpe the walking stays on a northerly direction joining Church Lane before rejoining The Chalklands Way at GR SE879 614 to Fimber. The walk head back to Wetwang by directly crossing fields to Wetwang and the finish.

Route

This walk and either start in the beautiful village of Thixdendale or a public car park near Bella Farm.

This walk takes in the fantastic deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy where the grounds and church are open to the general public to have a look around and a fantastic place to rest or take lunch, if starting off from Thixendale.

Warram Percy Church

The route can be split down to a shorter 8 mile walk just taking in Thixdendale, North Plantation and Warren Percy, however is no less rewarding than the full 18 mile walk.

From Thixdendale the route heads out of the village towards and up through Cow Wold following the Centenary Way (at Grid Ref SE836 629 the shorter walk turns right along North Plantation) to Birdshall.

From Birdshall the Centenary Way once again is picked up and heading towards Settrington leaving Centenary Way within the village at Grid Ref SE837 700. The route from this point skirts Settrington Wood and now links up with the Yorkshire Wolds Way passing through Wharram le Street, meeting the public footpath to Wharram Percy.

From Wharram Percy the route head back towards Thixendale walking up the steep Deep Dale to Grid Ref: SE847 628. Following this public footpath the route heads back to Thixendale passing Raisthorpe Manor.

Route

The High Hunsley Circuit is a personal favourite of mine and would recommend this walk to anyone with experience of walking 26 miles. The walk takes in some of the south wolds best scenery, visiting the picturesque villages of South Cave, Brantingham, Skidby, Walkington and Bishop Burton.

This route can be started from any of the villages along the route, there is usually plenty of road side parking in each, and walked in either direction, although I chose anti-clockwise from South Cave, but understand the tradition is to commence from Walkington, clockwise.

The route is well waymarked and is detailed on the OS map (Explorer 293) and therefore not challenging to navigate, allowing for the stunning scenery to be appreciated.

Although the Howdenshire Way is of a similar route to the more famous ‘Howden Twenty’, I enjoyed this walk far more. Walking this route I believe the additional six miles added to make the Howden Twenty provides no further enjoyment or achievement value, other than the increase to the distance. Although the Howden Twenty is a pleasurable route, other than the attraction of a ‘twenty mile walk’ it adds no further value to the Howdenshire Way.

For a superb walk around the Howden area this is the route to select however does include four un-maned railway crossings and therefore extreme care is required on this walk.

Route

The route utilises well established footpaths taking the walker through the picturesque wooded plantations of High Hunsley, Little Wold, and South Wold and the dales of Comber Dale and Drewton. With a small variation to the route a hill top airfield, at Mount Airy close to South Cave, can also be visited.

Due to the figure of eight construction, the walk can easily be broken up into two manageable chunks allowing for two rewarding walks to be undertaken, both setting off from Brantingham village. Both these routes offer varying landscapes, terrain and scenery and are both equally satisfying and make fantastic walks in their own right.

As most circular/figure of eight routes, the starting location can be from a numbers of places, however the most natural place is for this walk is Brantingham, which offers parking at the village hall, although parking is available at any of the other villages along the route.

Route

The North Wolds Way is my personal favourite walk within the East Riding, which I believe takes in the very best landscape of the wonderful Yorkshire Wolds.

This route takes in the picturesque villages of Millington, Great Givendale, Bishop Wilton, Kirby Underdale and Thixendale all connected by the rolling hills and dales of the Wolds providing a fabulous walk, which I believe any walker would find challenging and extremely rewarding to complete.

The route can be tackled in either direction (I chose clockwise the first time I took on this walk), although I believe walking this in the opposite direction is the more challenging - I have subsequently walked parts of this route since and found the steeper ascents to be found walking the route anti-clockwise.

Road side parking is available in all the villages along the route, however would suggest that the car park/picnic area found on the A166 approximately three miles south west of Fridaythorpe (GR 836567) is the best place to start from as it offers plenty of space, easy access and a natural place to commence the walk from.

Although this is only a 20 mile walk, it is challenging and would therefore suggest that it should only be taken on by walkers who have experience of walking this distance.
