text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_rYgurn-4l4U/TGBSOWXBbTI/AAAAAAAAAS4/Doz4l7Oe_gc/s1600/Dragonfly.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em;
I have read your arguments against Prop 19 and I found some mistakes in the info you provided. Hopefully, you can review this information and consider adjusting your argument to reflect accurate information. Because we’re no better than prohibitionists when we spread misinformation as truth. Please check your facts and reconsider.

I’ve seen many personal attacks against you and your activism and integrity. I will do my best to avoid any such personal attacks and just stick to the facts as I know them to be true.

Because you’ve made so many statements that need to be addressed, I decided I would address many of them separately so that these posts can be easily read by the masses and people can decide which parts they want to read. Personally, I hate reading huge chunks of texts, and figure the masses need something easy to read and understand, since it’s getting so confusing with so much misinformation and opinions being passed off as truth.

The first thing I would like to point out is that your understanding of current medical cannabis policies and laws in California is inaccurate. On your blog post you make several very inaccurate statements about the current MEDICAL laws, rulings, and policies.

Let’s take a look at them here:

“take a look at the rights prop. 215 gives and compare them to the rights proposition 19 would create, and then tell me which is more legal:”

age restriction:

prop. 215: 18+
prop. 19: 21+

Prop 215 does not have ANY age restrictions on it, nor does SB420 nor the State Attorney General’s Guidelines restrict the age of a patient a doctor recommends cannabis to. In other words, a doctor decided to recommend medical cannabis to a baby, the doctor and that baby have full protection on the current laws and policies. I do know of several patients under the age of 18.

how much you can grow:

prop. 215: anywhere from 6 – 72 plants (although the supreme court in january declared even these limits unconstitutional, saying that medical marijuana patients ought to be able to grow an unlimited quantity) (!!!)

The January CA Supreme Court ruling does not allow a patient to grow an “unlimited quantity” of cannabis. It allows a patient to grow and possess an amount that is “medical necessary”. There is a difference--- I realize you may not be able to tell the difference between the two ---but they are not the same thing.

It's very hard for me to see you provide inaccurate information about Prop 215 and then believe that what you are saying about Prop 19 is correct (when I’ve already noticed some mistakes in your argument about both of them).

And I also believe you’re inaccurate about what prop 19 will do to prop 215 but I will discuss that in a different post, to keep it simple. I would hate to confuse even more people.

I received the below email from one of my facebook friends:

If you have the time, could you please help me find reliable information on pregnant cannabis users? I have been using marijuana for 10 years, I also just found out I am 3-4 weeks pregnant. I intend to quit as soon as possible (i do not want to harm the baby) but i will need to find another medicine to help me just as quickly, or if there is a way where i could ingest THC without harming the baby that would be most beneficial to me. Thanks and brightest blessings!

The saddest thing to me is that there really isn’t that much research into this area and that’s mostly because our government goes out of its way to block research on this herb. Is it worth a High Times Stony Award?

The iconic cannabis magazine— High Times—just announced its nominations for its annual Stony Awards. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the High Times Stony Awards and will be held on September 30, 2010 at the Music Box in Los Angeles. And How Weed Won the West has been nominated for best documentary of 2010.

In addition to How Weed Won the West, 3 other documentaries have been nominated in this category including Strainhunters India Expedition, When You're Strange, and Dirty Pictures.

How Weed Won the West (HWWW) is the sequel to Showtime’s award-winning documentary American Drug War and in the movie Filmmaker Kevin Booth traces the fight against Federal drug regulation in the State of California.

While users herald the freedom of legally-licensed "weed," powerful forces at the DEA and law enforcement haven't given up their federal enforcement power yet. A public majority has approved the use of medicinal marijuana which has opened up a new front in controversial topic 'dispensaries.'

Many dispensaries have been raided. Law enforcement targets their distribution of marijuana and challenges their ability to grow into legitimate business. Just like the prohibition of alcohol, drugs have thrived on their illicit appeal, and doomed millions of non-violent offenders to incarceration

Now, those swearing by the healing power of medicinal marijuana dare to stand up and declare that the violence, corruption and uncontrolled flow of drugs is due to the prohibition of the substance, not the substance itself.

The State of California, in a key position to assert its 10th Amendment rights under the Constitution, has pushed the issue to a tipping point. The bankrupt government hopes to capitalize on taxation of a legal and prosperous marijuana trade that could, ironically, fight off big government and offer free humanity new hope.

Whether or not you love or loathe marijuana or the drug culture, everyone needs to fight for a more peaceful solution to the drug dilemma. How can we best manage the reality of drug use and minimize the harm to individuals and society at large?

In How Weed Won the West, filmmaker Kevin Booth tackles these difficult questions. He infiltrates psuedo-legal California growers, investigates DEA raids on licensed dispensaries and even undertakes to sample the disputed 'medicine' for himself.

Booth interviews radio host Alex Jones, former drug dealers, real-life gang members, legal-weed pitch men, activists and advocates to find the truth.

High Times believes this movie deserves to be nominated as the best marijuana documentary of 2010. What do you think? Have you seen any of the other documentaries nominated? Make History. Vote Yes on Prop 19 for the CA 11/2 ballot.

Make Change. Make History. Vote “Yes” 11/02/10

Join the Mod Squad

“Pot is Hot” is not just a clever slogan for a t-shirt; it is a grassroots public-education campaign to bring awareness to California’s Control and Tax Cannabis 2010 initiative which will be on the November 2nd statewide ballot and, in addition, it is an ingenious fundraising vehicle for that same initiative.

Join the Mod Squad

The creators of Pot is Hot also created the Pot is Hot Mod Squad in order to inspire and motivate advocates to take actions to impact California’s Control, Regulate and Tax Cannabis 2010 (Proposition 19) in favor of legalization of cannabis (commonly referred to as marijuana) for adult-responsible use (commonly referred to as “recreational use”).

Here are some ways you can help spread the word about this initiative:

Wear Your Support

A portion of the proceeds goes back to the campaign to pass the initiative. The creators hope to be one of the five largest contributors to the initiative and promise to keep open books on each and every contribution. So buy a shirt and wear your support.

With so many great holidays and events coming up between now and the elections, wear your shirt out as much as you can. Don’t forget about these upcoming events: Fourth of July, Reggae on the River, Hemp Fest, Labor Day, Harvest Dance, Howard Dover’s Medical Marijuana Comedy Show ExtravaGANJA, Halloween, etc.

The t-shirts can be purchased at www.potishot.org and have a simple “Pot is Hot” logo on the front and on the back they read:

Make Change

Make History

Vote “Yes”

11/02/10

www.potishot.org

Start Conversations

While wearing your shirt, be open and friendly towards people who show interest in your shirt. Many people would support cannabis if they knew the truth about it. However— after 70+ years of government misinformation and propaganda — social stigma remains prevalent.

Cannabis remains a very emotional topic, so when discussing these issues with others please remain calm, respectful, and stick to the facts. Avoid getting into heated arguments with personal insults. If someone does not agree with you, do not be disagreeable about it.

Educate Yourself Further

If you have not yet read the initiative yet, please do at www.taxcannabis.org. The best way to advocate for this initiative is to be familiar with it and its benefits. Such benefits include:

• Creation of thousands and thousands of new jobs

• Creation of new sectors within existing industries such as tourism, medicine, energy, textiles,

• Tax revenue: the Board of Equalization estimates California will collect $1.4 Billion in taxes annually and cities and counties can choose to tax it also.

• The revitalization of hemp which includes but is not limited to food, fuel, fiber, textiles, oil, building material, etc.

• Freeing up law enforcement to go after violent criminals instead of non-violent marijuana users.

• Over 80% of the marijuana offenders are in the justice system for possession only.

• Let’s give law enforcement more time and resources to arrest and prosecute more cases of homicide, rape, domestic violence, and violence and other serious crimes.

Pot is Hot is a community-based public-education campaign aimed at getting voters to the polls Tuesday November 2, 2010 to vote in favor of Proposition 19: "Control, Tax, and Regulate Cannabis". Last day to register to vote is Monday October 18, 2010.

Pot is Hot Mod Squad organizers would like to thank all for their support in these efforts. We appreciate any and all support. Stay tuned for upcoming events and fun ways to participate in the politics which affect our lives.

Medical marijuana helping children with special-needs, A California mother reaches out to other mothers on ABC News 20/20 on June 4, 2010.

Los Angeles– May 27, 2010, Judy Mendoza, a 43-year old mother of three has begun treating her son— who has a rare yet severe form of pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder— with medical cannabis.

On June 4th, 2010, 10pm local time Judy‘s interview by ABC News 20/20 correspondent, Chris Connelly will be aired. She shares her moving story about her son Ryan his battle with the debilitating disease known as PANDAS, and an unconventional treatment in the form of Medical Cannabis. In the interview Judy also speaks about the not-for profit she has started to help other mothers and children get the support that they need.

Judy has formed the organization called Mama to Mama (or MSquared). www.msquaredsite.org. The group acts as a support network for families with special needs children. With group therapy, support meetings and information for families interested in learning more about medical cannabis and advocating for its therapeutic use and research in children with PANDAS, autism, and other debilitating conditions.

Ryan’s doctor recommended trying medical cannabis after the family had exhausted all other treatment options. The cannabis works well for the Mendoza family. “We have two different types of medications that we are giving him. One is medical cannabis in a capsule form that we give him once every 24 hours. The other is a tincture/liquid drops that we put under his tongue if he is having a lot of anxiety. The drops are helpful because they are administered sublingually which means the medicine enters the blood stream very quickly, and the results have been remarkable.” Judy said.

Mendoza’s 12-year old son, Ryan, suffers from Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) a severe form of OCD which has the patient so riddled with compulsions that completely debilitating terror can come from the sound of wind or seeing the number 6. The PANDAS form of OCD is thought to be triggered by an infection of the same bacteria that causes strep throat and scarlet fever. As the child’s immune system fights the strep infection, it becomes confused and starts to attack an area of the brain called the basal ganglia. Abnormalities of the basal ganglia have been associated with symptoms of OCD.The PANDAS condition is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the body instead of germs, infections, and diseases.

By talking about Ryan’s illness and treatment Judy has become a speaker and advocate. Recently she was invited to speak and head a panel discussion at the second annual THC Expose’ the largest medicinal/cannabis awareness convention in the country. 20/20 was on hand to film her talk to the crowd, estimated at over 30,000 for the weekend, for a feature that they are doing on the treatment of special needs children with medical cannabis.

During her panel discussion, Judy shared a story about how her son, Ryan (12), stood in front of her car and begged her to run him over and kill him because he could no longer handle all the thoughts in his head. Judy gave him his cannabis medicine and an hour later he was sitting, relaxed, in the house and said “Mama, I would really like my room to be more peaceful. Can I have a waterfall in there?” As Judy explained with tears in her eyes to the crowed gathered to hear her and the other mothers speak, “I have been to doctor after doctor and have tired many different treatments, while this (medical cannabis) isn’t a cure all, because of this new medicine my son, my Ryan can go outside, he can play with his brother and sister. He can have a more normal life. And for that I’m grateful.”

Brian Roberts, The THC Expose promoter is quoted as saying: “I want to let you know the new face in the fight for freedom of choice among adults concerning medical marijuana. I was honored to be able to meet and get to know Judy Mendoza, a mother that has two kids that have special needs. Her approach is new and still needs massive funding by the Federal Government to help all of us understand the truth and need for medical marijuana legislation.”

Judy is forming a coalition of M-Squared mother’s and plans to visit Washington DC to talk to law makers about how federal laws are interfering with their safe access to medical cannabis and research on the therapeutic value of cannabis as medicine for special-needs children.

I’ve started Medical Marijuana Media to help patients, like you, get the positive media attention you deserve. I can handle your public relations with one goal in mind: keeping your cannabis story on the minds of the public.

I have had the opportunity to lead some very exciting public relations projects including:

~ Charles C. Lynch’s federal trial, protests, and sentencing,
~ Ajnag’s Cannabis iPhone application,
~ How Weed Won the West’s 420 screening at Paramount Studios,
~ Howard Dover’s Medical Marijuana Comedy Show ExtravaGANJA,
~ Cannalgesic Natural Relief Spray and Lotions,
~ mothers with special needs kids,
~ Pot is Hot t-shirt
~miscellaneous volunteered media work for Americans for Safe Access
I have a media contact list with thousands of email addresses to many mainstream media outlets.

I have been able to get my clients local, national, and international media attention and community support because of my extensive contact lists and established connections.

My clients have been featured in:

~ Time Magazine,
~ LA Times,
~ ABC Morning News,

I know my pot is always hot when I put my flame to it!

And as a Medical Marijuana Media Maven, I know that pot is hot in the media as of late, especially with the news surrounding Tax & Regulate 2010.

Generally I don't call cannabis pot but I noticed that the media uses the word "pot" in titles of articles and sometimes throughout their pieces about the herb with medicinal value. Cannabis goes by so many different names and pot is one of them. What do you think of the word 'Pot"?

And as an English Literature major, I love literary word games such as rhymes. So Pot is Hot is the latest slogan to support Tax and Regulate 2010 which is a ballot intiative that will appear on California's November 2, 2010 ballot.

The website has words in the background that describe what pot is:

~ Medicine
~Hemp
~ Humane
~ Renewable
~ green
~ textiles
~ industry
~ economy
~ energy

Do you agree or disagree? What more should be added to this list? Would you buy one of these shirts? Please share your thoughts and invite others to contribute.

Marie Rae Correa, 23 years old, is the founder of Kushed Out Fashions who is just struggling to survive. She’s a medical cannabis patient who has found inspiration through drawing cannabis plants and putting them on clothes. She’s never been to art or fashion school but she wont let that or anything else stop her.

Marie recently moved to Vegas because LA is too expensive. I am not sure what her living situation is in Vega but I know she was homeless in LA, couch surfing from coach to coach as she pursued her dream and struggled with her own life altering medical condition.

I wont say much about her medical condition right now because I haven’t asked her permission to share the info she told me but I can say that it’s a tragedy the way we treat underprivileged people in this country. It’s almost like being poor makes one a 2nd-class citizen.

Marie started to draw when she was going through a rough time in her life around 2006 even though she had never taken an art class. She draws the cannabis plant by hand and found it therapeutic like the herb itself.

She began putting her drawing on clothes and that’s how Kushed Out Fashions came to be. I met Marie at the HempCon at the beginning of 2010 in LA. I was walking around to all the booths introducing myself and my new organization Medical Marijuana Media. I almost didn’t stop by her booth but just did. I introduced myself and exchanged contact info.

After HempCon I followed up with Marie and learned about her very interesting story. What strikes me so much about Marie is her positive attitude even after all she has been through. She’s always very gracious and happy.

She’s in LA this weekend for business and she called me. While I was on the phone with her I remember about the Drug Policy Alliance grants and made sure to tell her all about it. I also told her about Grassroots California, and to Derek who is doing a photo project on medical cannabis patients.

She’s going to try to make it to the LA-ASA meeting this Saturday but needs a ride from [I forgot the name of the city].

Many of you may know that Stephanie Landa created Landa Prison Outreach Program (LPOP) while spending nearly 4 years in federal prison for growing city-sanctioned medical cannabis. Stephanie was 60 years old when she was thrown in jail. She knows firsthand what it is like to be a victim of this war on drugs.

Stephanie is a medical cannabis patient and has been using the medicinal herb for many years now to relieve her symptoms including chronic pain from a serious shoulder injury. Stephanie is finally out from behind bars and she wants to help other prisoners through these difficult times. And you can help by giving just a little.

Her organization, LPOP, is seeking postage sponsors or donations of stamps. LPOP collected over 1000 letters and 500 petition signatures at the THC Expose and we have packages ready to mail to 22 Prisoners Of (the drug) War (POWs) BUT WE NEED POSTAGE.

You can help. No gift is too small. One book of stamps costs $8.80 and can mean our POWs get to hear from the outside. Stephanie can attest to how important letters are to inmates, even from strangers.

She received mail from people she had never met before going to prison and from dear friends as well. It meant the world to her. Every day when they called out the mail, it would make her happy to hear her name called. Think of how easy it is to brighten someone’s day that live in the most unbright situation imaginable.

Also, $10 gifts can help Stephanie send 8 books into prison libraries, so our POWs have good reading material while they are trapped by our own government. Stephanie received a generous gift of books but cannot afford to mail them to prisons.

These small things mean the world to our friends who are locked up. Please send Stephanie a private message if you can help in any amount (letfreedomgrow@yahoo.com) or text/call 818-652-7891.

Also contact Stephanie if you would like to get the name(s) of medical cannabis patients who are currently behind bars. LPOP also does court support for defendants facing prison time. Keep up with LPOP on facebook to find out more ways to help.

And don’t forget “Like” LPOP on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Landa-Prison-Outreach-Program-LPOP/112801995405846
The title and some other parts of this blog were originally written by Jessica Gelay and Stephanie Landa on facebook. I took what they wrote and expanded on it, in hopes of helping others understand LPOP and their needs a little better. Thanks Jessica and Stephanie!

That which we call…

Shakespeare posed a famous question that seems fitting in the medical cannabis community in Los Angeles right now. What is in a name?

Cannabis goes by many names such as marijuana, pot, weed, grass, lawn, reefer, dope, Mary Jane, 420, 215, ganja, giggleweed, wacky tobacky, assassin of youth, bamba, bud, herb, burnie, cheeba, chronic, dank, green, hooch, kaya, killer green bud, mota, etc.

But the crazy naming thing does not stop with just what the herb is called but how many different types it comes in, such as: hemp, indica, sativa, kief, hash, highbred, purples, etc.

And there are just as many naming variations on ways of consuming cannabis such as joints, bongs, blunts, spliffs, vaporizers, tinctures, topicals, glass pipes, etc.

And there are a plethora of names for the weights in which cannabis is packaged in grams, eighths, quarters, halves, ounces, pounds, lids, zips, Z’s, etc.

And the nomenclature for the specific strains is overwhelming with names such Sour Diesel, Blue Dream, Casey Jones, Kush, O.G., Purple, Maui Wowie, Life Saver, Pineapple Thai, Mr. Nice, White Widow, Goo, L.A. Confidential, headband, Ingrid, Blueberry, Cheese, Chemdog, Haze, Jack Herer, Kali Myst, etc.

And in Los Angeles, Ca, medical cannabis patients can get most of the above from any number of collectives which go by their own set of very interesting names, such as: Sunset Herbal Corner, California Patients Alliance, Pure Life Alternative, Farmacy, Strain Balboa Caregivers, Patients Against Pain, LA Wonderland Caregivers, Ironworks Collective, Mother Nature’s Remedy, etc.

As you can see the medical cannabis community has no shortage of names and they are very creative when naming almost everything they do. So, as Shakespeare put it so elegantly, What’s in a name? And (this part I added to the question) does all cannabis and cannabis organizations smell the same?

To twist yet another phrase from Shakespeare (because I was an English Lit Major at UCLA), Something’s rotten in Los Angeles. And I would like to clear up any confusion there may be regarding the names of organizations that sound or look very similar to others.

Dan Lutz, a Los Angeles marijuana provider, has named his last two organizations after well-established organizations that have been around for years before he was ever known to this community. Dan's collective has won an injunction against the city of LA which challenged the moritorium. And Dan organized a new group of post-ICO (moritorium) collectives.

First he named his organization, Los Angeles Caregivers Alliance (LACA) which was oddly similar to an organization that had been organized in LA for years called Greater Los Angeles Caregivers Alliance (GLACA). GLACA with a "G" is a group of pre-ICO collectives meaning they had complied with the City of LA's request to fill out paper work and register with the city before a moritorium went into place. Post-ICO collectives violated city rules and opened without proper permits, licenses or permission.

Now, Dan has decided to name his organization Safe Access (SA) but for the last 10 years AMERICANS for Safe Access (ASA) has been the nation’s largest medical cannabis organization. Americans for Safe Access has been fighting to protect patient's rights on all levels of government including cities, counties, states, and federal. They have won vital cases that set precident for all patients. They have chapters around the country. Dan's organizaton has yet to accomplish anything but clever naming.

Either Dan has no idea what’s going on in the medical cannabis community and keeps accidently naming his organizations after pre-existing groups or he lacks the creativity to come up with more original names by himself. Regardless of Dan’s reasoning, it’s clear the average person cannot tell the difference between LACA and GLACA or Safe Access and Americans for Safe Access and that’s cause for a lawsuit. He may want to reconsider his naming process before it becomes a legal issue.

P.S.

All cannabis smells like freedom until you get caught with it by law enforcement, then it smells like Denmark (As Shakespeare might say). And maybe Dan should change his last name to start with the letter "P", it seems more fitting.

Just in time for the November election, Howard Dover will present another Medical Marijuana Comedy Show ExtravaGANJA on Sun Oct. 17, 2010 at the world-famous Comedy Store in Hollywood, CA. And you’re not going to want to miss this one.

And the lobby will be full of other organizations and vendors and you never know what goodies you may go home with or snack on at the show.

We will be at the Comedy Store in the Main room (yeah, nothing but the best for our patient community, baby) located 8433 Sunset Blvd. Hollywood, CA 9006. So, I shouldn't be surprised about my first experience with a reality TV show focused on medical cannabis, should I? Here's a recap of yesterday's festivities

So, yesterday at 1:35pm, I got an evite to the grand re-opening of a pre-ICO collective which is featured as part of a reality TV show pilot. If the pilot is approved then it will turn into a series on Current TV (a cable network that does edgy stuff). The party/filming was supposed to start at 5 pm.

Normally, I would send out a text message to all the LA-based medical cannabis activists that I know but I had lost all my contacts the day before and had only recovered a few of the #s so far. So I let a handful of people know about it. I called Howard Dover, since we had spoken earlier in the day about getting together to work out the details for his next Medical Marijuana Comedy Show ExtravaGANJA.

So, Howard agreed to go and I had back from a few people who said they would go. Howard agreed to drive me there, so I didn’t have to worry about nothing which was cool because I hate driving sometimes. So, vaped a little before going and Howard brought a joint just in case (which was nice later).

We showed up and there was a food truck out front, a green car with a Pot Locator logo on it with smoke coming out of the sun roof, a table with free goodies on it, some tables set up in the alley with nicknacks for sale and shortly after they set up a sound system and lights.

After a little bit of figuring out what was going on, Howard and I registered with the collective and went inside to chitchat for a while. I noticed that the collective had me sign a “Primary Caregiver” form and I wondered how come since I knew those forms gave them no legal protection and they are not and never will be considered my primary caregiver legally. I didn’t mention anything about it.

Once in the “Bud” room (as it was referred to), we were offer medicated chocolate-covered fruit and other snacks. I had a couple of slices of orange dipped in cannabis chocolate. Howard went straight for the banana. It was good. Howard several more pieces. I eventually had a prune covered in chocolate and a nut cluster thing too. It was all good and I was “rolling” fairly soon.

There was another girl behind the counter that was just “helping out” as she kept saying. I forget her name right now but she had hot pink and black hair and makeup. I love matching so, I liked that but she didn’t know anything about cannabis and just sorta stood there.

I met also Sarah, the manager, who happens to have dread locks and looks really pretty. The camera crew was off doing its own thing until Micah, one of the creators/producers, came in and asked Howard and his friend to do a scene where they go up to Sarah behind the counter.

Micah the producer asked me to leave the “bud” room while they were filming that, so I went outside to chill. When they were done Howard came out and we were all just hanging around outside. And Howard saw a friend of his drive by and his friend happened to be throwing a party later that night up the street [more about that later].

I was doing my best to stay out of any shots they were filming but it was hard, it seemed like they were filming everywhere. So we all went back into the “bud” room and I got to talk to Kristin a bit more and realized we both know Jeff Joseph and we had a good conversation about all of that.

I slow started meeting a bunch of people who were “cast” in this “reality TV” show. A few patients, like Howard’s friend who is also a standup comic. A lady named Karen (or Karene) who knows Barry and the guys at CPA. A met a girl who say the listing on LA casting, she was a medical cannabis patient and an actress. Very interesting. I told her, “I am not an actor, I am an activist”. She got a kick out of that.

Later on in the evening she said she wanted to be an activist too. And I told her it was pretty easy, she just has to show up to meetings and do what she can. She seemed a little worried that she could handle being an activist. I told her to be like Howard Dover and take her passion and find a way to bring attention to the cause through her passion.

While hanging out in the “bud” room Howard got permission to smoke a joint, so we were enjoying ourselves as they were filming the actress and her “friends” coming up to the collective. But eventually, I got super hungry and needed to eat because I didn’t have lunch before arriving. So I had to navigate around the camera crew at the front door and sneak out the back door.

I got a pulled-pork sandwhich. It was yummy but messy. So, I gave half of it to Howard later. I went to go sit down in a director’s chair in the “bud” room. But that didn’t last long because they came in with a fairly large camera crane thingy and the room got to full. And Kristin almost got hit in the head by the counter weight on the back of the crane.

I found a room with comfy couches and some chairs, told Howard and we all chilled in there for a while. After some great conversations, the room cleared out a bit and it was just me, Kristen, Sal (another manager/owner) and then the Producer came in and he paid me some awesome compliments to Kristin.

He was telling her how amazing I am for all I’ve done and all the people I know and telling her that she should get to know me and so on and so forth. I just smiled and left the room. Early, the producer said if the show gets “picked up” they will have to hire me for consulting. I wonder if he was just pulling my leg or if he was serious.

So, after a while they asked all to go back into the “bud” room for a staged segment, where Kristin was supposed to thank us all for coming out and we were all supposed to cheer. She they took a few “takes” of it. At one point the producer, got (most of) the room chanting “I love pot” and that’s where I drew the line. I did not chant along with the room.

They were also throwing edibles out into the crowd and that’s when I thought, “This is nothing like reality” I have never gone into a collective and had them throw “pot” into a crowd of cheering people. I questioned if that was the image I really wanted America to have of medical cannabis. But it’s not my show and I am not calling any of the shots.

They did a raffle and I won a really cool book with amazing glass artwork in it. I also met this very interesting young man who was celebrating his 19th birthday. He had come up to LA from San Diego to check out the Music Institute (he wants to craft guitars). His parents are Jehovah’s Witnesses and very strict. He is very liberal.

He got a flier from a giant pot leaf walking down Hollywood blvd. So he took public transit from Hollywood to the Universal Studios area just to find out that there was NO doctor at the collective. So, he had to take public transit to a doctor.

In all, he spent 5 hours on public transit in LA just to get his recommendation and come to the party. I felt bad for the guy. But he seemed happy. He was a pipe and got some goodies. And my friend, Kate, drove him back to Hollywood, so that he didn’t have to take public transit again, especially after medicating.

So as things were wrapping up, Howard and I decided to go to his friend’s party. We found it fairly easily and I was surprised about how nice the place was. I found out later his friend is a comedian/piano player/actor and he was throwing the party to screen his favorite episode from the show he’s in which airs on Nickelodeon.

Howard and I made a grand entrance and told everyone we had just come from the grand re-opening of a medical marijuana dispensary

We had a good time though. I got a hamburger and found a seat on the couch. The TV show was cute and I could tell why Steve (the actor) liked that episode so much because it revolved around his character. It was funny, I actually laughed a few times.

I got pretty tired after that and Howard and I took off. But all in all it was interesting to say the least. Sometimes, I can hardly believe my life and the things that I experience. Yesterday was one of those days.

I just hope the reality show doesn’t make medical cannabis look bad.

Federal Judge Recommends Reclassification of Medical Marijuana, Removes Random Drug Testing and Some Restrictions for Defendant

Los Angeles, CA – Federal District Judge George H. Wu issued a revised 41-page written sentencing order this week for former medical cannabis provider, Charles C. Lynch. In addition, the Judge also granted the defense’s request for reduced supervised restrictions as Lynch remains out on $400,000 bail pending appeal. Lynch’s Federal Public Defender filed an appeal Thursday, May 6.

"[T]his case is not like that of a common drug dealer buying and selling drugs without regulation, government oversight, and with no other concern other than making profits. In this case, the defendant opened a marijuana dispensary under the guidelines set forth by the State of California . . . . His purpose for opening the dispensary was to provide marijuana to those who, under California law, [were] qualified to receive it for medical reasons."

The sentencing order states that Lynch was “caught in the middle of shifting positions” on the issue and that, “Much of the problems could be ameliorated…by the reclassification of marijuana from schedule I”

Lynch gained notoriety as a federal medical cannabis defendant after being raided, arrested, prosecuted and convicted under the Bush Administration but then sentenced after President Obama signaled a change in federal enforcement policy.

That notoriety came in part because of all of the support from the medical cannabis community that rallied around Lynch. The Judge acknowledges, in a footnote in his sentencing order, the massive out pouring of letters for Lynch:

“While simple popularity is not a factor to be considered, the Court notes that it has received more letters in support of Lynch in this matter than in any other case in the undersigned judicial officer’s 16 years on the federal and state benches.”

Judge Wu's call for the reclassification of marijuana comes as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is considering a petition, filed in 2002 by the Coalition for Rescheduling Cannabis.

After a multi-year-long review by the Department of Health and Human Services, the petition was recently sent to DEA, the final stage of the process. Acting DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart— who still must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate— has the authority to grant or deny the rescheduling.

Judge Wu ordered Lynch back into court April 29, 2010 to discuss his written decision. Both the Prosecution and the Defense pointed out errors in Wu’s written opinion, so Wu had to re-write it. Lynch claims there are still errors in the document.

Such as Judge Wu’s claim that Lynch should have known cannabis sold by one of his former employees to an undercover officers—in a parking lot at least 5 miles from the collective— came from Lynch’s collective. However, there was no evidence that the cannabis came from Lynch or his collective.

At that April 2010 court appearance, Judge Wu had forgotten that In June 2009 he verbally sentenced Lynch to one year and a day, and four years of supervised release, despite the 5-year mandatory minimum being sought by the Justice Department. Judge Wu also forgot he told Lynch he could remain out on bail pending appeal.

Four months after that June 11th sentencing hearing, the Justice Department issued a memo directive in October to U.S. Attorneys, discouraging them from arresting and prosecuting medical marijuana patients and providers that follow state law.

Lynch remains released on bail pending his appeal, but cannot use medical marijuana according to the terms of his release. However Judge Wu agreed to remove the requirement that Lynch call in daily to see if he has to report to random drug testing.

Judge Wu also reduced Lynch’s supervision from “intense to routine”. Lynch had been driving over 200 miles to Los Angeles from his home in Arroyo Grande every two weeks for brief meetings with his probation officers. Lynch now can drive to Santa Barbara about once a month instead.

Before his medical cannabis collective was raided by DEA agents in March of 2007, Lynch had operated for 11 months without incident, and with the blessing of the Morro Bay Mayor, City Attorney, City Council, the local Chamber of Commerce, and other community members.

Two months after Lynch closed his dispensary, Central Coast Compassionate Caregivers, he was indicted and charged with conspiracy to possess and possession with intent to distribute marijuana and concentrated cannabis, manufacturing more than 100 plants, knowingly maintaining a drug premises, and sales of marijuana to a person under the age of 21. None of the federal charges Lynch was convicted of constituted violations of local or state law.

Currently, patients and providers are prevented from using a medical necessity or a state law defense in federal court. The Justice Department policy has failed to deter the prosecution of more than two dozen pending federal cases.

In response, Americans for Safe Access advocates for the passage of Congressional legislation -- HR 3939, the Truth in Trials Act -- which would give state law-compliant defendants a fighting chance in federal court.

This is the story of how an over-worked and under-paid orange county house wife and mother of three gained VIP status at the THC Expose which included all things cannabis.

Most people would assume that Judy Mendoza, as 43-year old mother of three young kids, would be the least likely person to be honored for free with full VIP access to largest marijuana event at the LA Convention center.

The organizers of the event gave Judy and her dedicated supporters a free extra large booth which is 3-times the size of the small booths. The only booths larger than Judy’s booth cost thousands of dollars for those spaces. Judy’s booth included 2 large couches, 2 tables and some chairs, all for free.

At her booth was info about CannX tinctures that the children have been responding well to. The THC in the tinctures is not activated so there is no psychoactive response. Instead, the CBD (Cannabidiol) and other medicinal compounds found in cannabis are in this tincture to help these patients.

In addition to the booth, Judy also got a VIP pass that allowed her access everywhere. Every few people had such privileges and Judy’s crew of supporters all got wrist bands that allowed them entrance to the VIP lounge, free of charge.

Judy was also given her own panel on the main stage, where Judy and other mothers spoke to the crowds while several camera crews filmed their discussion, including a 20/20 film crew that has been following Judy’s unique story.

And on Sunday, the last day of the Expose, Judy had the pleasure of being dressed up in a beautiful costume and makeup [See photo of Judy and me]. Her floor-length gown was simmering white and flowing with layers of iridescent and sheer fabric. And her head piece was sparkly and elaborate with crystal beads dangling from it. She looked like a mystical fairy princess.

Although exhausted, Judy looked happy to be a VIP for the weekend.

There’s no glamour in Judy’s day-to-day life as a mother of special-needs children. Both Judy’s sons have different special needs. Judy’s 7-year old son has Down syndrome and her 12-year old son has a very rare and severe form of pediatric OCD called PANDAS. This condition is caused when some children get a strep infection and their immune systems attack a part of the brain instead of the infection.

With this condition, the children’s immune system starts to attack an area of the brain associated with OCD syndrome. Recently a doctor specializing in special-needs children recommended Judy’s 12-year old son try cannabis to treat his severe symptoms after the family had exhausted all other treatment options.

The family has had positive results. And that’s why the organizers of the THC Expose gave Judy and her crew the VIP treatment this weekend.

During her panel discussion, Judy shared a story about how her son, Ryan (12), stood in front of her car and begged his mother to run him over and kill him because he could no longer handle all the thoughts in his head.

Judy gave him a brownie with cannabis in it and an hour later he was sitting, relaxed, in the house and said “Mama, I would really like my room to be more peaceful. Can I have a waterfall in there?”

Judy admits that cannabis is not a cure all but believes cannabis is an important treatment for some of her son’s symptoms. He still has really bad days and really good days too.

Judy has started an organization called M-Squared which stands for “Mama to Mama” and she hopes to reach out and help other families with special-needs kids, letting them know about medical cannabis and how it may help some kids with special needs.

Judy also hopes to visit Washington DC to talk to law makers about how federal laws are interfering with their safe access to medical cannabis and research on the therapeutic value of cannabis as medicine for special-needs children.

Tio Castro introduced Judy to Brian who organized the THC Expose. I look forward to meeting Tio and Brian.
I recently read this article and I have to admit I am torn on this issue.

On one hand, I want medical cannabis to be respected and legitimized; on the other hand I want women to be respected and legitimized without limiting their healthy expressions of their beautiful selves.

I can totally understand the perspective that the author of that article presents and I appreciate him bringing up such an important issue. I am just wondering if there was a perspective or areas of this topic that weren’t addressed.

I am both a medical cannabis patient who suffers from life-altering medical condition and a very attractive woman who enjoys dressing up and celebrating my natural beauty. It is impossible to separate those two things from myself (at least at this point in my life). And I image it would be difficult to separate those two things out of this community of unique and diverse patients.

To me, it’s all about being healthy. Just as there are healthier ways to consume cannabis, there are healthier ways of representing cannabis and healther ways for women to be attractive and even sensual. And here I do have to say that I am a bit concerned about just how healthy some of those ways of representing cannabis are and the women surrounding it were at the THC Expose.

I don’t want people to think that just because we’re patients we all have to look as sick and injured as we can and wear the most unattractive clothes as we can to legitimize and respect cannabis and our bodies.

I know several very healthy-minded and attractive women who have great sex appeal and still represent medical cannabis in healthy ways. Take Sarah Diesel for an example, she gets all dolled up for events and looks great. She even does pin-up calendars and sexy photo layouts for cannabis publication.

Why should anyone ask her to change who she is or what she does, if she’s doing it in healthy ways? And who are we to judge her based off of that.

At the same time, I doubt Sarah Diesel was the type of girl that the above author was concerned about and I have to admit I was uncomfortable with some of the half-naked, body-painted women at the Expose. And some of them didn’t bother me at all. I guess we all have our levels of comfort.

Another thing that sticks out in my mind was a very sexily dressed woman that was visually a medical cannabis patient. By that, I mean it was obvious that she suffered from serious life-altering medical condition (although I could not tell you what that condition is) and she seemed to be having a good time.

I cannot say what her story is because I didn’t actually stop and talk to her but I assumed it probably felt really good for her to be dressed up and out in front of so many people representing a medicine that has helped her.

Why should she have to suppress that part of her that makes her feel like a woman? It’s probably very difficult for women like her to feel 100% sexy while dealing with such health issues. So, why cannot see show off some skin, in hopes of attracting a loving partner? Does't she deserve to find happiness through her body (even if that body is causing her so much trouble)?

I find it ironic that the marijuana plant that we consume is the female version of the plant which is so heavily prohibited and the female body has gone through and still struggles with its own prohibitions both legally and socially.

So how do we find healthy ways to promote cannabis and allow women to express themselves in healthy, yet sexy ways?

Rolling Stone’s MarijuanAmerica: Close but no joint

In Rolling Stone’s April edition of their magazine they dedicated 12 pages to an article called “MarijuanAmerica” and in doing so they make a few journalistic errors.

The first major issue I came across in the article happens near the beginning of the 4th paragraph when the author, Mark Binelli (a contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine) claims that proposition 215 only “allows for the possession and cultivation (but not the distribution and sale) of cannabis for medical cannabis.”

If Binelli had read the text of the Compassionate-Use Act of 1996 he would see it plainly states it was enacted “To ensure that patients and their primary caregivers who obtain and use marijuana for medical purposes upon the recommendation of a physician are not subject to criminal prosecution or sanction.”

I’m not sure what the word “obtain” means to Binelli but to me, it means there has to be some sort of distribution involved.

Not only that but that same act pushes local and federal governments to help ensure “safe and affordable access” to medical cannabis for “all qualified patients”. Again, to me the words “affordable distribution” means some sort of currency is exchanged which means there are sales allowed when “obtaining” cannabis the way that law was written.

Now, I realize that there are small number of politicians and law enforcement officers around this state trying to claim “all sales of medical cannabis in California are illegal, even non-profit sales within a collective of patients”. However, the laws themselves and the court decisions on the subject have not supported that claim.

And for Rolling Stone Magazine to state sales and distribution are not allowed under the law is a little irresponsible. They should have at least cited one of the people who claims that, so that when the courts finally prove sales and distribution is allowed under the law, the people who say that look bad (instead of Rolling Stone Magazine).

I wrote an entire blog about what California law really says about “sales” of medical cannabis here: http://waronme.blogspot.com/2009/12/updated-what-does-ca-law-say-about-non.html

And then as the article goes on, there’s a little more sloppy journalism in reporter the legalization and decriminalization of cannabis (for medical and recreational use) in various states.

And in addition to the 14 states that have already legalized medical cannabis, Washington DC has done the same and U.S. Congress just approved that law to be enacted. Those 14 states include Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington plus the District of Columbia

And there are over 14 states with currently considering medical cannabis laws as the article reports. Those states are Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Wisconsin, Utah, Ohio,

And the only reason why New Hampshire is not on either of those lists is because Governor Lynch vetoed the bill when it was passed through both houses in that state.

Binelli even gets his terms confused and uses the word “decriminalization” in place of “legalization” as if they mean the same thing.

Binelli writes: “it was estimated that decriminalization could net California $1.4 billion in annual revenue.”

Cannabis has been decriminalized in California with a minimal fine for possessing less than an ounce since 1975 with Senate Bill 95. The $1.4 billion estimate relates to potential revenues if cannabis is legalized in California.

Also the article is accompanied by statistics which are easily questionable but Rolling Stones includes them as if they are fact and undisputed. For example, the articles says:

“Total weight of all marijuana plants seized by the DEA in 2009: 3,285”

Plenty of cannabis activists dispute the DEA’s reported numbers of weight and price because they often exaggerate and include pots, potting soil, and other items in the weight of what they seize to make it seem like a lot more. Rolling Stone neglects to acknowledge such disputes.

My biggest complaint has to do with the way the article handles the “medical” cannabis aspect of the issue. As a legitimate medical cannabis patient suffering from chronic pain, I find the way in which Binelli handles this aspect offensive.

“But everyone knows that the overwhelming majority of people in California getting medical marijuana recommendation are using pot as “medicine” the same way characters in John Cheever stories used three extra-dry martinis on the 6:15 bar car as “medicine”.

Excuse me?!? Really?!? Is that some that EVERYONE knows? And what citation or proof does Binelli have to prove such an outrageous statement?

“For a state with such a health-obsessed reputation as California, I’ve never met so many perfectly fit-looking people in their 2s and 30s complaining about some sort of chronic back pain or nausea”

WTF?!?

At this point in the article, I lost all interest because I knew the article was not intended to represent people like me (a “perfectly fit-looking” person who falls into that age range suffering from a chronic pain injury which effects not only my back but my neck, head, shoulders, arms, and hands).

Over the last 2 years, I’ve met hundreds of medical cannabis patients, all living with life-altering medical conditions, some of which look fit (some of which do not look so fit). And this article completely washes over the fact that these patients need safe access to medical cannabis and media coverage like this only makes it difficult for us to be taken seriously.

The irony of my injury is that I do not look injured but suffer day in and day out with minimal to severe pain for reasons that the doctors cannot seem to agree on. Cannabis is an important part of my pain-management regime, along with other natural, alternative treatments and activities.

This sort of media coverage makes it difficult for me to stand up as a MEDICAL cannabis advocate and be taken seriously. I have to do everything to defy the stereotypes and stigmas involved with marijuana as a recreational drug just to be taken serious about the importance of safe access to medical cannabis.

Are there recreational user posing as medical cannabis patients? I’m sure there are but should that over shadow legitimate patients who use it for medical purposes who happen to look fit?

For some of us, “medical” cannabis is more than a tactical push to reform the nation’s drug laws. As Don Duncan often says, “For some of us, medical cannabis is not a means to an end but an end in itself”. And what about including us and our stories in the patchwork display of Marijuana in America featured in the Rolling Stone’s article MarijuanAmerica?

To me, Rolling Stone's MarijuanAmerica comes close to representing America's marijuana cultures but falls short when addressing patients. So I say, it's close but no [medical] joint.

The American flag joint image discussed in this blog is featured in the Rolling Stone magazine articled called “MarijuanAmerica”: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/32873354/marijuanamerica

I wonder what Gorman & Gorman (credited for the photograph in the article) were trying to convey with this image. The image is large enough to take up the top half of 2 pages in the print magazine. If an advertiser had paid for the space it would have cost a pretty penny.

The internet image is much smaller and less imposing but still would have cost an advertiser a considerable amount.

I cannot be 100% sure how much time and energy they put into this image but I will put considerable time into decoding the image. The first thing that struck me was the fact that the joint in the image is lit.

I don’t know if the cherry on the joint is photoshopped in but I don’t think it matters because the American flag joint looks on fire with a burnt section next to the cherry with the other end ashy.

To me it looks like an American flag being burnt as a joint burns. It seems like the photographer are equating smoking pot to burning an American flag. That’s a powerful and political image.

Personally, I’m a bit indifferent to the idea of burning the American flag. Though I never have (and probably never will) want to burn the American flag, I think people have the freedom to do as they please as long as it doesn’t infringe on the rights of others.

I see burning a flag as symbolic speech which is protected under our First Amendment Rights. It harms no one but gives voice to a dissent against the government. And I thought our Founding Fathers meant to protect all expressions of non-violent dissent against the government, especially if the government is going against the will and rights of its people.

I realize not everyone views the burning of an American flag so liberally. So I decided to ask my facebook friends what they thought of burning an American flag.

Now remember, most of my 1500+ facebook friends support medical cannabis and probably consume the medicinal herb and none of them knew I was asking about the Rolling Stone’s image. They were just responding to my status update about burning an American flag.

One of the first things pointed out is, it used to be illegal to burn an American flag until it was found to be unconstitutional to make laws against this symbolic speech. So just like it used to be illegal to burn the American flag, it is illegal to burn cannabis.

Both are non-violent crimes which some argue we should have the right to do.

So how are flag burners viewed in this country? One of my facebook friends, who is a medical cannabis patient, said flag burners are a disgrace to the ones that shed blood for FREEDOMS. Another said, “They are trying to piss somebody off”. Are cannabis consumers seen as a disgrace? As just wanting to piss someone off?

I’m sure they are by some people but not by the people that responded to my facebook status update. I wonder what the people who approved this image at Rolling Stone magazine think of flag burners and cannabis consumers.

Another respondent also brought up the “Pledge of Allegiance” and I commented that at the end of the pledge I always add, “…Liberty and Justice for ALL including medical cannabis patients”.

One responder said we (as Americans) are programmed/conditioned to view the flag as a symbol of identity, solidarity, protection & pride. And then he acknowledged that one trait of being American is to be rebellious.

Smoking cannabis is also a symbol of identity, solidarity, protection, pride and rebellion for many people. I can identify with a few of those symbols myself, as a medical cannabis patient. Yet, I’ve never heard anyone claim to burn the American flag for medical purposes.

So what do you think about the Rolling Stone’s burning American flag joint?

The only reason anyone has any major issues with cannabis is because of laws.

Congress is the only group of people who can change FEDERAL laws. Congress represents you and all of the American voters/citizens when making/changing laws.

If we had 1million people call Congress to legalize cannabis, we would have it legal already. But instead, most supporters would rather call the Humor Hotline than call Congress.

There's only really one way to legalize marijuana on the federal level and its through Congress.

Call the Capitol Hill Switchboard to ask: (202) 224-3121
Or look it up online:
http://www.house.gov/
http://www.senate.gov/

This is what Snopes says about this BULLSHIT:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/drugpoll.asp

I found an employee of HUMORHOTLINE on twitter who was posting that BULLSHIT! He said he knew it was not official because he works there! But he was still posting it. WTF?!?

He said he works for the President of HumorHotline. I told him to tell his boss to go FUCK HIMSELF!

Would you be willing to donate $25-100 (or more) to Zavala for Council 2010?

I have been in Lancaster Ca for just under 2 weeks, helping Victoria Zavala with her campaign for Lancaster City Council. She has a decent shot of winning because only 20% of the population is registered to vote here and only 17% of those voted in the last municipal election. Victoria could win with as little as 4,000 votes. The current Mayor only won by less than 400 votes last election.

Victoria is a medical cannabis patient, she suffers from Lupus and degenerative disc disease. She also runs a non-profit delivery collective in the Antelope Valley. So, if she wins, she will be the first openly-medicated council member and the first Latina to sit on this city council.

Victoria started her delivery service with $370, a borrowed car from her mother, and an ounce of medicine. She's grown this collective and they serves thousands in the Antelope Valley. She's the only one out here who is attempting to do it 100% by the law. There are a few other delivery services out here but they were illegal dealers before and just started taking medical cannabis patients recently.

Victoria has a medical background as a first-responder paramedic. She got her paramedic education from UCLA extension and to get through her classes and purchase her books, she gave blood to earn money. Once, she gave blood 3 times in one day just to afford an up-to-date text book because her instructor had yelled at her for having an older edition and told her she would fail out of the course if she didn't get the correct book. When she graduated, no one was there for her graduation. Her family was proud of her but didn't understand her career choice.

I'm out here in Lancaster (from LA) volunteering a lot of time to Victoria because her and her crew helped me with organizing both the Charles C. Lynch protests that I planned. They came from 2 hours away just to attend planning meetings, they donated supplies to make signs, they donated waters, they led in chanting, they offered to help us more than any other group did. Victoria also drove from Lancaster to attend LA City Council meetings to voice her concerns about how the LA ordinance would negatively affect cities who were looking to LA for how to handled medical cannabis.

Recently, Victoria has had some setbacks with her hired help abandoned her because there were some dirty campaigning going on. Tires have been slashed, brakes have been tampered with, computer hard drives have been fried and Victoria believes people have been in her home. The current Mayor is rich beyond belief and owns much of this area. He's vowed to spend a million dollars on this campaign. He wears a bullet proof vest under his suits. The climate out here is really strange. There's a prison near by. And a lot of section 8 people are moving from LA to be here.

There's a lot of racism here. I heard the Mayor say the "the Black voice isn't loud enough. My arms are open to you at city hall but your voices just aren't loud enough". Another candidate said "The Blacks and Mexicans don't vote" which is true but instead of trying to empower and educate those groups, the politicians ignore them. Victoria refuses to ignore the largest parts of the population and has been doing her best to reach out to all the disenfranchised groups.

But this area is really segregated and a lot of people here are poor. The town is separated into 2 sections...the westside (the nice side) and the east side (the bad side). It's so sad. And the police aren't helping the situation. They are way overboard with their enforcement. And the DOJ and DEA just started a program called "Weed & Seed" which is to "weed" out crime and "seed" positivity in the community with a DEA agent required to be on the "steering committee". I feel so uneasy out here but I'm dedicated to helping Victoria because I've seen first hand all the help she provides to others.

We are reaching out to the cannabis community for (minimal) donations to help us ensure Victoria gets elected so she can help ensure safe and affordable access to patients in this area. This area is so unique because it has sun all year round which is great for medical cannabis cultivation. Getting Victoria elected could really help bring jobs and opportunities in the Antelope Valley. You can make online donations here: http://www.zavalaforcouncil.blogspot.com/

All donations will go to printing, promotional, and personnel costs. We are doing this grass-roots style and we need funds to put as many feet on the street as possible. The last day to register to vote is March 29th and we are really trying to push to get voters registered. We want to be able to feed volunteers, even if we cannot pay them because our dedicated volunteers are working really hard. We want to reward them as much as we can.

We have an ongoing raffle with a grand prize of a Fender Squier bass guitar. We are looking for items to be donated for raffle prizes. We are trying to avoid cannabis-related raffle prizes and in fact, we are not even focusing on the cannabis issue with the public because there are so many other issues in this area. We only talk about cannabis if the public brings it up and then we refocus on more important issues like the number of sex offenders who live here because local hotels get voucher, or the crumbling city infrastructure, high unemployment, lack of family-centered services, etc.

Victoria is not just a cannabis canndidate, she's a dedicated canndidate that happens to be a medical cannabis patients. Please help us get Victoria Zavala elected to Lancaster City Council. We really do appreciate any and all support you can send our way. Thank you!
It sounds terrible. I dont know anything about this or if its a hoax. The photos are distrubing. I need to so some fact checking. But there are other pressing matter:

My name is Ben Leer, and I work at the Tardive Dyskinesia Center (tardivedyskinesia.com). I was searching through a number of disease treatment sites when I came across your website, and was very impressed by the information you have listed. We provide educational information on tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder caused by the medication Reglan. Currently scientific evidence has indicated that marijuana (cannabis) has great potential to help patients manage symptoms.

Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) is a result of damage to the bodily systems that process dopamine, and is typically caused by exposure to certain neurological medications - including Reglan. The symptoms of TD, which are irreversible and incurable, mimic those of Parkinson’s disease. Tardive Dyskinesia victims suffer from involuntary, repetitive movements which often continue after the drug is no longer used. some patients do report that their use of marijuana relieves their symptoms. We feature the most up-to-date information on TD, its causes and all known treatment options. Additionally, we distribute free support books and informational packets to our users.

The best treatment is prevention; right now we are in the midst of a public outreach, attempting to educate families on the dangers of Reglan. Some studies have shown cannabis to be useful in helping patients manage the symptoms of tardive dyskinesia. I noticed you already have some other cannabis resources listed on your resources page at medicalmarijuanamedia.com/resourceful-links.html and thought you might be willing to include our organization as well. I'm available by e-mail at bleer(@)tardivedyskinesia.com. With your help, we can educate the public about the dangers of Reglan. Thanks again!

Medical Marijuana Media would like to honor Victoria Zavala with its first ever Medical Marijuana Media Maven award. This award will be given out to people who utilize media to get positive attention for medical cannabis issues. Victoria is receiving this award because she maximizes media to its full potential.

I guess I should start out by defining media. Media is plural for medium. And media is a combination of materials and technologies used to communicate between 2 or more people who are not face-to-face. A lot of times when we talk about “The Media”, we are referring to mainstream corporate media outlets such as CNN news, New York Times, Time Magazine, NPR, etc. Those are each different mediums (or media).

However, media is also things like the telephone, skype, facebook, newsletters, text messaging, paintings, photography, video, books, business cards, flyers, brochures, logoed items, t-shirts, labels, emails, etc.

Victoria does 2 really cool things with media; she created her own and she distributes other people’s media.

Victoria and her crew create a 1-page 2-sided newsletter called the AV SATIVA which stands for Antelope Valley Safe Access Through Individuals, Volunteers and Advocates. Now, you maybe think a sheet of paper isn’t worth being nominated for a media maven award.

It’s what Victoria adds to this one-page newsletter and how she distributes it that earns her this award. She needed a way to share information with her patients and community and so she decided to create this newsletter.

In the newsletter, she includes a calendar with upcoming events, informative websites, and little new blurbs about city, state and federal things related to medical cannabis. She fits a lot of info into those 2-sides of that paper. And she does one every month. And she is talking about making it bigger with more information.

She provides these newsletters to the patients she sees, to members of the public at events where she has a booth, and she provides them in here Community Cannabis Center. Victoria has a small space in the Lancaster International Mall where she provides literature and plenty of information about getting legal and finding a trust-worthy physician for recommendations.

Victoria also utilizes cannabis media to help educate others. Whenever she’s in LA, she will pick up stacks of West Coast Cannabis, West Coast Leaf, LA JEMM, etc and she will bring them back to her area and not only give them to her patients but also leave them a medical clinics and hospitals in the area. She’ll go into doctors’ offices and tell them about her service.

To me, Victoria Zavala is a true medical marijuana media maven for all she does to promote safe access to medical cannabis.

You may not have heard about Victoria Zavala yet but you will. If she is elected on April 13, 2010 – she will not only be the first Latina on the council in Lancaster but also the first medical cannabis patient to serve on that council.

Victoria has been tirelessly working on safe access for medical cannabis patients in the Antelope Valley (which is about 2 hours north of LA).She is the director of a non-profit delivery service.

She has been desperately trying to convince the city to allow her to have a storefront location, so that she could help more patients. They have put a moratorium on all storefront locations in her city in the Antelope Valley Zavala is a single mother who struggles with her own auto-immune condition.

I first met Victoria while planning the first Charles C. Lynch protest. Victoria and her crew (Andrew and Andy, etc) jumped right in to the planning process. They donated a lot of poster boards, paints, and paint brushes to help us make protest signs. And they even helped plan the second protest as well.

Zavala and her small delivery collective are making major medical marijuana improvements in the Antelope Valley of Southern California. Zavala has been in the medical industry for over 15 years. And Community involvement is nothing new for Zavala and the small group of patients who help her.

She has been advocating and educating about Medical Cannabis in her surrounding area, her collective has had booths at community events, has given to charities like Grace Resources (homeless shelter), the LGBT domestic abuse shelter, Tarzana Substance Abuse Center, and Mental Health Centers at least once a month.

She dresses professionally to go into medical centers and hospital cafeterias to leave Medical Cannabis publications (West Coast Cannabis, West Coast Leaf, LA JEMM, etc) at these locations. She talks to doctors at the local Dialysis centers, Cancer Centers, Pain management Centers.

She even goes to all city council meetings, to some crime watch meetings, and City Planning meetings. She has met with her City Manager & City Attorney. She has met with the Sheriff and Detectives from various law enforcement agencies in the area.

And she has partnered with smoke shops to do vaporizing demonstrations, to teach patients the benefits of vaporizing which heats the herb – releasing the medicinal compounds – without burning it. This helps patients learn healthier ways to consume their cannabis and helps them find locations where they can get these products. She even created a poster that explains the benefits of vaporizing medical cannabis to share with patients.

Victoria needs to raise funds for her campaign to get the word out about what she’s doing. If you can help, please do. Keep an eye out, I’ll be posting more information soon. Please share this and tell others. We need more medical cannabis elected officials to make good laws for patients.
