THE CAMPAIGN:

This season A|X Armani Exchange takes you on a secret rendezvous inside the glamorous world of “Style Surveillance.” The A|X Spring 2012 campaign offers a voyeuristic view of style with images that capture the provocative thrill of escapism for a new generation of runaway lovers. The balance of “ones who look” and “ones who are watched” is played out in a series of images that display an intense mood of cool sensuality – a tropical hideaway where models act on the impulses of intrigue and desire.

CAST & CREW:

The campaign stars models Barbara Palvin (IMG) and Alex Cunha (DNA) shot by fashion photographer Matthew Scrivens (A|X Armani Exchange), styled by Sally Lyndley (Camilla Lowther Management), hair by Neil Moodie (Tim Howard), make-up by Virginia Smith (Streeters) and under the creative direction of Tom Jarrold (CMO for A|X Armani Exchange).

THE LOCATION:

This two-day shoot was shot on location at the Ace Hotel, in Palm Springs, California. The location plays part to the overall theme of escapism, the attitude of youthful optimism and glamorous exhibitionism, while highlighting this season's soft, clean, and sophisticated pieces that have made A|X Armani Exchange the label of choice.

THE LAUNCH:

“Style Surveillance” will break in February 2012, with a series of black and white images in national media including print, outdoor and online. The print campaign programme will consist of spreads and single page ads featured in magazines including GQ, ELLE, Glamour, People style watch, OUT, Men’s Health, Nylon, V Magazine, and VMan. The campaign will also be featured on signature billboards in major cities such as New York and Los Angeles and online with an enhanced digital programme.

Say yes to the (Ford) dress

At Ford, designers consider each new vehicle a work of art. Now the world of fashion can get a taste of that enthusiasm. Two young British designers have created haute couture....from a car!

Scottish designer Judy Clark and English jewellery designer Katherine Hawkins were commissioned by Ford to create fashion items as part of a celebration commemorating the 100th anniversary of Ford in Britain as part of a month-long event celebration.

Judy Clark, a nominee for Scottish designer of the year who worked under the late Alexander McQueen, fashioned an Edwardian-style gown from tweed, leather, lace, spray paint and silk chiffon – along with assorted components from a 2012 Ford Focus. The parts, she said, included car keys, radio and dashboard components, seat covers and two red taillights.

Clark said she wanted to create a dress that mixed feminine layers with industrial mechanics. Her work is detailed on her blog. She refers to the back of the garment as the “engine,” where the smaller components have been stitched into a crinoline-style bustle. The red taillights swaying at hip-level capture the eyes, while the biker-style jacket, adorned with speedometers and created from seat covers, modernise the gown.

Designer Katherine Hawkins created a complementary ornate necklace from dials, buttons, springs and instrument panel switches from Ford Focus parts. The piece uses dials, springs, buttons and seat material. The centerpiece of the creation is a grouping of instrument panel switches, while coiled springs dangle in chandelier- style, and colourful dials and buttons frame the upper portion.

The two designers undertook their challenges separately – neither was aware of what the other was creating.

Models International Management (MIM) has an great presence in the Ottawa fashion industry. They partner with clients such as Blackbook Communications, Bytown Group, Capital Style Magazine, Flare Magazine, LouLou, St. Laurent Shopping Centre, Ottawa Fashion Week, and many more.

Many MIM models have started their career working locally, and have risen to international success.

The MIM model search will provide the opportunity to scout beautiful and unique male and female faces. The winner of the search will receive a full modelling contract with MIM.

DJ Zattar spun the tunes and Caffe Venuto catered this Christmas soirée in the newly opened Viens avec moi boutique in Wellington Village. Opened by Models International Management's (MIM) Sophie Beaudoin and Renée Morra, Ottawa's newest destination for the fashion-savvy carries items from BB Dakota, Dolce Vita and Free People, just to name a few.

The party, like any hosted by a modelling agency, was stock full of stylish people. Who was best dressed?

This year I had the pleasure of attending a few of the most fashionable Christmas parties in town. The first was hosted by THANN, a skin care boutique in Ottawa's Glebe neighbourhood.

THANN sells all natural skin care products and is sold in over 22 countries world wide, but its headquarters are right here in Ottawa.

Kalimat is a quarterly magazine committed to providing an outlet for political, cultural and social expression within the Arab region and its Diaspora. The creative directors, editors and designers of the region are not given a chance to express themselves. Instead, these roles are given to people of the more “modern” culture, increasing an adherence to the status quo.

Kalimat Magazine is a vehicle that aspires to revolutionise media and design education in the Arab region. by empowering Arabs to take over the telling of their own stories and adding their perspective to current affairs, culture, art and design and new media.

The upcoming Winter issue will focus on design in Egypt, however, we strive to maintain an open editorial policy and publish articles on any number of topics and in a range of styles, including in-depth features, investigative journalism, op-eds, reviews (films, books, music, theatre, and more), travel writing, interviews, photo-essays, artwork, design submissions, creative non-fiction articles, fiction, poetry, and short stories.

In previous issues, you'll find interviews of Suad Amiry, Michel Khleifi, Rania Mattar, Samir Habashneh and many others. Several young entrepreneurs were profiled: management consultants and maamoul (date cakes) makers. Newer films such as Elia Suleiman’s The Time That Remains and older documentaries as Leila Khaled: Hijacker were reviewed by our contributors.

Montreal Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012

First, I'd like to apologise for the delay in posting this, but alas, here it is.

The 21st edition of Montreal Fashion Week took place in September and I had a chance to check out a couple of shows. It was pure joy to mingle with fellow bloggers and stylists, artists friends and other fashion aficionados. Here's a little summary on the collections that caught my eyes.

UNTTLD

Rock & Roll cruise is what came to mind when I saw the presentation. The sleeveless perfectos, the spiderwebbed crochet, the intricate details on chessboard-printed kaftans and the cocoon-shaped cover ups were simply delightful. Black & white, knits, visible zippers, layering, transparency and lightness were keys for the partners in business and in life.

Travis Taddeo

The minimalism tsar turned it up again with soft, sheen nude and ratine printed ponchos. I feel hard for his feathered pieces, perfect for a cocktail soiree! His collection, titled Dry Heat, explored restlessness in the intense summer. It embodied a hunger for adventure, experience and growth, evoking a dream-like state and an insatiable desire for warmth.

Melissa Nepton

Nepton transported us in a desert safari with wrapping, comforting garments clothes. The La collection season one runner-up (Montreal's response to Project Runway), created yet another collection full of mystery and sensuality while staying ethereal. Ruffled blouses, collars and her signature impeccable draping were beautifully showcased. The dresses were also for the honor. The palette consisted of sand and mineral shades and tone on tone details, with touches of mandarine, made out of silk, linen and viscose. This show perfectly illustrated Melissa's approach to accessible sophistication.

Beauty and Fashion Gala

The National Arts Centre’s Panorama Room was alive with people Friday, August 26th for a night filled with fashion, makeup and charity. The Beauty and Fashion Charity Gala, organised by makeup artist Ariana Assadi brought the Ottawa community together to raise money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

The evening started off with the launch of Assadi’s Web site and a showcase of six makeup looks put together by Assadi herself.

The night moved on to focus on the fusion of makeup, beauty and fashion. Sukhoo Sukhoo was the first designer to hit the runway with dramatic stripes, accentuated shoulders and the poncho below standing out in his collection.

Ottawa designer Stacey Bafi-Yeboa used punches of colour and sophisticated black in her Kania Couture collection.

FrAsh Jewellery exhibited some striking “backlaces” and layered necklaces. FrAsh Jewellery was available for purchase after the show, with 20 per cent of proceeds going to the Canadian Breast Cancer foundation.

Montreal based designer Anomal Couture showcased a dramatic cape, and combined leather, tweed and prints. To close Anomal’s show, Assadi took to the stage to model her dress, an Anomal creation (see far right). Anomal will also be showing at the upcoming Montreal Fashion Week.

Parents proudly exclaimed variations of “that’s my kid!” when these supermodels-in-training strutted the catwalk at Short and Sweet Couture and Growing Kids.

The end of August seems to be synonymous with “back to school shopping” for parents of students of all ages. The designs at Short and Sweet Couture gave a comfortable and stylish vibe with clothes for elementary school aged children.

Growing Kids showcased school uniforms and formal wear for youngsters.

Per Elephtheria Couture, floral patterns are still in style! Vintage inspired prints were the pinnacle of Ele Couture’s show.

Fur and leather were statement pieces at Rachel Sin.

While watching the White Satin Bridal looks, this little blogger made an important life decision. When (and if) I put a ring on my left hand, my right hand ladies will be wearing elegant reds, liked those featured in White Satin’s collection.

Emilia Torabi and JanaHanzel closed the shows with their collections. At Torabi, fur trimmed pieces and two-piece suits took over the runway. Hanzel’s signature headpieces and gothic inspired looks closed the fashion show portion of the night.

The night ended with an announcement of silent auction winners and door prizes.

Isabel Toledo American debut

U.S. runway debut of Cuban-American fashion designer Isabel Toledo spring/summer 2012 took place in Miami, during Vanidades' 6th annual "Magia de la moda" event.

On October 19, 2011, at the Funkshion Fashion Week portion of the event, presented by COVERGIRL and Pantene, the high-fashion runway show introduced Isabel Toledo’s Spring-Summer 2012 collection.

The event took place at the Moore Building and began with a cocktail hour on the second floor followed by an award presentation and runway show on the first floor. Fashion Group International honoured Isabel & Ruben Toledo with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Toledo has been in the fashion industry for over 25 years and is nationally renowned for designing the lemongrass dress and matching coat First Lady Michelle Obama wore on Inauguration Day in 2009. The collection finds inspiration in the style and grace of the Caribbean woman. From evening gowns to short minimalist dresses, soft and delicate fabrics flow with ease and move effortlessly as if blown by the breeze. Many are hand-dipped in a watercolour palette to create stunning hues of coral and indigo, while silk failles in shades of stone, have been wrapped in tropical fruit colour chiffon.

A radical classicist, her collections emanate from one another; object and product of endless refinement. Toledo looks for inspiration in the intricate and technical aspects of couture. Her ability to juxtapose fabrics and seams enable her to construct innovative and precise designs. Her collaboration with her husband and alter ego, artist Ruben Toledo, is unique in the history of fashion. Together, Isabel and Ruben have developed an extraordinary and prolific symbiosis between art and fashion, constantly distilling the classics of the future.

Stella & Dot fall 2011 collection presentation

On July 20th, 2011 at My Condo Lounge in Ottawa, an event organised by Starfish Events, Stella & Dot invited women to experience the new fall 2011 jewellery collection. I was requested by Sandra Butler, the founding director, to provide guest with style tips on how your fall wardrobe can blend in with the new Stella & Dot collection. I chose six outfits from Victoire boutique and Young Janes to depict the season's trends and combined them with the appropriate S & D gems.

Assisted by the gracious Marilou Moles from 20 York Street, I showcased 12 different looks, taking the models from day to evening by simply switching the jewellery they had on.

Over 200 guests were invited to experience the jewellery.

All styles are available in genuine Arctic-weight or City-weight wool (good at –15 Celsius with a sweater underneath). The parkas come with a wind-resistant outer shell for added warmth and protection on extra-cold days, and to keep wet snow or freezing rain off the wool.

OTTAWA FASHION WEEK SPRING/SUMMER 2012

Ottawa Fashion Week began its Spring/Summer 2012 season last Thursday, September 30, with local celebrities, journalists, bloggers and fashion lovers filling the third floor of the newly opened Ottawa Convention Centre.

Showcasing seven designers each day, day one focused mainly on ready-to-wear fashions.

Birds of North America kicked off the shows with a line that, if I had one, would make me pine for my beach house in the Hamptons.

The models donned plaster face masks and eye patches, contrasting the collection's nautical inspired dresses, bows, buttons and soft stripes.

After Birds of North America, Amber Watkins' swim collection flooded the runway with cute bows, high waists, feathers and bright palettes.

The feather embellishments on the suits themselves may best be suited for a lazy day lounging at the pool and not actually going in it, but her styling–dressing the models with one dramatic long feather earring, made a bold statement.

Valerie Dumaine was next, her neutral tones a stark contrast to the bright greens, blues and oranges in Watkins’ swimwear collection.

The looks were a mix of beiges, greys, browns, bright lips and low chignons.

The romper and onesie in Dumaine’s collection hints toward another trend for Spring/Summer 2012. The rompers were constructed of a beautiful roped designed fabric.

After Dumaine, Micalla's statement piece jewelry made the audience chatter with excitement.

The chunky and layered choker necklaces would make any outfit pop. Other pieces had a hint of burlesque inspiration, like this stunning piece worn by supermodel Herieth Paul

(below middle).

Black is a staple colour in Anomal's the collection, but was mixed with gold high waisted shorts, lace and mauve fish scale textile prints. A black leather tie around belt was a recurring piece in the collection.

Next up was British designer Simon Ekrelius. A Grecian inspired dress kicked off the show, followed by a tan leather frock held together by grommets.

Pairing each of his designs with a pair of red pumps, this shoe is sure to be a staple in the spring wardrobe.

The last collection of the night was Rud by Rudsak with a mix of classic leather and jersey jackets.

The collection hinted to a biker chic style with leather zipper jackets while the bright jersey jackets and button trenches were feminine and flirty.
