Looking at the year ahead

With so much of 2025 taking up with preparing to move, moving and reorganising following the move with most of my gaming paraphernalia being in storage for months, I didn’t think a retrospective of the year would be either long or interesting. Consequently I’m just going to focus on my plans for 2026. So here are a few projects I intend to work on (but will, no doubt, be distracted from in due course!) [for an explanation of the Stages see my Project Categorisation post]:

Guards of Traitor’s Toll (Stage 3)

I was vaguely aware of this game from Grey for Now Games before but paid more attention to it over the Christmas break and, then convinced, took advantage of the North Star Boxing Day sale to dive in.

I am still waiting for the bulk of the order to arrive but have the starter set and have assembled one building so far. Assembling the figures and painting them is yet to come though!

3mm Eastern Front (Stage 2)

Having picked up a decent selection of Oddzial Osmy kit before Magister Militum closed down I have the ingredients for this project already. The rules are likely to be either Rommel or Eisenhower both from Sam Mustafa.

In addition to the minis (and they are very mini too!), I have the bases and materials for the terrain including some 2mm Eastern Front buildings from the Brigade Models range.

15mm WW1 (Stage 4) / RCW (Stage 2)

With my Serbians within sight of completion, I am now looking at the pile of unpainted metal I have for the other nations - Germany, France, Britain and the Ottoman Empire - as I have the Russians and Austro-Hungarians done already.

An offshoot of this, which may get moved up the queue, is Russian Civil War, as I can use my Imperial Russians for Whites (with suitable new command stands) and have the Red Army figures in the aforementioned pile too. Of course, I may well use a different rule set for these games with the venerable Triumph of the Will from the Too Fat Lardies being the most probable.

28mm Operation Sealion (Stage 3)

This project stalled a little while ago so I need to pick up where I left off (initially finishing my invasion barges and pillboxes) and then some unusual (improvised) items.

The first game is, perhaps unsurprisingly, going to be the initial landing and I have plans for at least another two games following that. With Chain of Command likely to be the rule set of choice.

28mm Pulp (Stage 4)

I have a number of new sub-projects to work on including Tomb of the Serpent (Egyptian), China Station and The Raid on Innsmouth. I have most of the things I need and just need to do some construction and painting now.

15mm By Fire and Sword (Stage 3)

This one mostly needs basing and finishing touches before it can hit the table so it will just be a matter of when it gets prioritised.

28mm Rif War and Great Syrian Revolt (Stage 4)

Some minor completion activities and these will be ready for the table - I suspect the biggest issue will be deciding which rules to use for them.

Various Stage 2 Projects including 1848, Franco Prussian and 15mm Napoleonics are all moving at the pace of an asthmatic ant with some heavy shopping so don’t expect to see much here for a while!

I do also have various game ideas using existing kit so I don’t really consider these actual projects but these include 15mm ACW, 28mm 02 Hundred, 28mm Witch Hunting, 28mm Border Reivers and a few more that have temporarily slipped my mind.

So plenty to keep me busy for the year ahead!

I'm afraid I have not been posting much for some months - I hope you can excuse the lapse but this has been a busy year on the personal front with getting married and moving house. Hopefully now that we are largely settled in the new home and I have finally moved all my gaming stuff into the new war room I will have more time both for gaming and blogging.

In any event, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best for the festive season and a happy and prosperous 2026!

I have a decent collection of 28mm Spanish Civil War figures (and terrain) and have been wanting to get them to the table more. Unfortunately, I haven't found a set of rules that worked for the numbers of figures I have and also gave me the flavour of the Spanish Civil War I was looking for. So I have decided to write my own.

¡Viva la muerte! are based around six 28mm representing a unit and use both event cards and the Fudge (or Fate as you prefer) dice (size sided dice with 2+, 2- and 2 blank sides). Each faction has differing victory conditions in order to create a semi-cooperative game.

So after having worked away at them for a few months I decided to give them a proper playlets at the club.

The scenario saw a small town held by three factions of Republicans (with the Communists being the only well supplied) being assaulted by elements from a Nationalist column - again three factions (with the Army of Africa bing the only well supplied).

The general consensus was that the rules worked (phew!) but needed some tweaking in a few areas - combat factors, armour (the least mature element anyway) and some of the initial supply conditions. So I have a few amendments to make and then have another game later in the year.

Wargame Weekend

As has seemingly become an annual event, I travelled up to the Herts Volunteers to put on a large Sails of Glory game. This year’s game was loosely based on the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797 which saw both HMS Victory and Nelson featuring albeit not together. Here are some photos from the game:

As with the historical engagement the game was a victory for the British.

France 1940 - The Bridges

A good while ago I managed to pick up a Cigar Box Battle river mat on eBay. I had long been thinking about the interesting challenges of a game with one side having to make a strategic withdrawal across a river and the other trying to seize the crossings. Finding the mat advanced my plans for that game. Unfortunately the pandemic got in the way and with all my projects the timeline extended well beyond the original plan.

But after picking up not just one but two bridges from Sarissa Precision things got under way. I had chose a road and a rail bridge, so I obviously needed to build the track to go with the former and decided a station would also be a good addition. I also wanted to make the game big both physically (a 12 foot by 6 foot table) but also from a Chain of Command perspective; this meant at least a company a side. Fortunately I had collected sufficient 28mm figures to make that work. So I finally put the game on at the club.

It saw a rag tag French outfit as the defender facing a determined German company supported by a platoon of tanks. The French were made up of a platoon of Foreign Legion and a platoon of Tirailleurs Sénégalais on one side of the river, needing to withdraw across the bridges and a Motorcycle platoon holding those bridges. The French also had some support in the form of an anti-tank gun and some engineers in a truck - the latter to demolish the bridges before the Germans could capture them intact. Along with two Bouteilles Incendiaires, two roadblocks and a couple of full Chain of Command dice for the withdrawing troops, this was the defending force. The Germans, in addition to their infantry company and tank platoon, had an Adjutant, a Pioneer team in a Kubelwagen, a SdKfz 222 armoured car, an infantry gun and a truck with four rubber boats. It wouldn’t have been an early war game without a Shabby Nazi Trick - the German players selected a fifth column sniper (Jean-Claude). We played through the patrol phase which saw some interesting jockeying for positions around the buildings on the German side of the board. With jump off points then positioned we were ready for the meat of the game.

The Foreign Legion were covering the French left flank and the Tirailleurs Sénégalais on the right. The Germans began their advance with the platoon on their right flank making serious progress until they encountered the Legion. The other German platoons soon found that the Tirailleurs weren’t going to be easily dislodged and put them under heavy concentrated fire. The roadblock constrained the easiest route for their Panzers and so the main armoured advance was through the farmland to the right of the road.

Repeated exchanges of fire were telling on the French forces as they tried to hold the Germans long enough for their engineers to deploy and mine the bridges.

Eventually they began to fall back but not before taking serious casualties. Meanwhile Jean-Claude who had been placed in the church tower (it’s traditional!) was causing the French some unexpected problems.

With the French C-in-C desperate to blow the now mined bridges he ordered a full withdrawal but this was easier said than done with the Germans covering most of the routes to the bridges.

The Tirailleurs were aiming for the road bridge but when they got there the C-in-C ordered them to switch to the distant rail bridge so he could blow the former.

Meanwhile the German pioneers were making heavy weather of destroying the roadblock and the motorised elements of the German force were still held up as a result.

In the end only a single Legion section got to safety before the second bridge was blown and with neither side having been able to meet their victory conditions I declared the game a draw.

Aliens! This time it's.....September

At the last club meeting I played a game of Aliens. The rules were a close offspring of the original Leading Edge Aliens board game and it was lots of fun. The scenario was loosely based on the movie with the Colonial Marines trying to escape to the APC. Here are a few photos of the game:

In the end we managed to get more Marines out than they did in the movie so we decided that was a win!

Freikorps und Spartacist - Westhafen

Having enjoyed the last game of the Freikorps und Spartacist rules, I decided to expand both the table size and player count. Of course this required the acquisition of a significant greater amount of terrain along with some additional units.

Once I had pulled all of this together I put on a game at the club meeting this weekend which saw a much larger Freikorps force including an A7V tank and a Garford-Putilov armoured car along with some Stormtroopers facing a similarly enhanced rebel force albeit with only some unarmoured transport.

The game started well for the rebels with the Freikorps deployment halting after the second round but they really didn't sieze the opportunity created by that advantage. There were some hard fought street battles with some significant groups of civilians coming under fire from the Freikorp forces - perhaps too much of a concentration on the civilians meant they weren't eliminating the rebel forces. By the end of the game neither side had reached their overall victory conditions and based on levels of army morale meant I had to call the game a draw.

BOHICA 2 - Search and Destroy

Our second outing for the BOHICA rules involved an apparently straightforward search and destroy mission. We did have some armoured support this time around (in the form of an M48) but we were in for some surprises! Our map and the real map were different in a number of ways, the road was mined and we were facing some NVA with armoured support rather than just the VC we were expecting.

We also had some clarifications on the various elements of the rules we either were not playing correctly or we confused about in the last game.

Whilst the game was fun we were still not entirely convinced as some elements remained a little clunky. Our umpire is now keen to try a game of Force on Force with the Ambush Valley supplement to see how they compare.

Starship Troopers

At the last club meeting we played a game of Starship Troopers using 25/28mm figures and lots and lots of Bugs!. The rules were a home-brew set that were easily picked up and allowed the game to move at a good pace. The terrain was a great example of recycling, kit bashing and scratch building with some time being taken to try to identify the origins of the various pieces!

The impressive number of Arachnids (over 100 by the late stages) were all from the old Galoob action figure range and included Warrior Bugs, Heavy Bugs, Tanker Bugs and a Plasma Bug - we were lucky and no Hopper Bugs actually appeared in the game!

BOHICA - Search and Rescue

A couple of weeks ago we played a first game of the BOHICA Vietnam rules with 28mm figures and some lovely terrain.

The scenario took place in I corps zone close to Hue. Two helicopters had gone down near a small village in an area of ongoing pacification. The helicopters were carrying a senior officer and TV film crew. A nearby team, SEAL team Zulu, had been diverted to search and rescue. The area had been fairly quiet recently; however on arrival SEAL team Zulu came under heavy mortar fire. Their boat was damaged and they requested support. The team went to ground south west of the village, but had eyes on possible location of the helicopter crew and passengers.

Our mission was to make our way to the village from the east to distract and engage the enemy. Our platoon was supported by ACAV and M113s. There was the possibility of heavy armour support and air support. We had also been allocated a LOACH for spotting/artillery observation. The LOACH was only going to available for around 15 minutes though. We were to assist in search and rescue, locating and securing a safe LZ for air evacuation. Usual rules apply, civilians and their dwellings were not to be targeted. The area was supposedly close to pacification. Latest intel (for what it's worth!) indicated the area was still relatively quiet so we could expect a swift and successful op.

We had a post game de-brief and it was clear that we had not been getting some elements of the rules quite right. Whilst we had some issues with them we though it would be worth trying a second game with the rules having been clarified.

Abbeville: The Somme 1940 - Blitzkrieg at Zoteux

I ran a small scenario for Chain of Command from the Abbeville: The Somme 1940 Pint Sized Campaign book using 28mm figures.

The scenario was set on 5th June 1940 and saw a platoon from the 51st Highland Division defending against a platoon from the 5th Motorised Infantry Regiment of the 2nd German Infantry Division attacking. The British took a roadblock and a 2 pounder anti-tank gun as their support whilst the Germans chose two additional squads (one of Pioneers and one regular infantry) and a Panzer IV.

This particular scenario was based on the Blitzkrieg scenario from the Blitzkrieg 1940 Handbook for Chain of Command with some adjustments.

Afghantsy

Last weekend was our club Open Day and I put on a 28mm game from the Soviet Afghan War using the Force on Force rules.

The scenario was a sweep and clear operation by Soviet forces designed to flush out an eliminate Mujahideen fighters who had been attacking the Soviet's supply convoys. The Soviets had a motorised infantry platoon in three BTR-70s and the Afghans had three small teams on board with variable reinforcements arriving during the game.

We played the game twice with the players swapping sides and then determining the overall winner based on the total points from both games.

Combat Patrol in the Pacific

On a recent visit to my friend Lenin’s I got a chance to play Combat Patrol for the first time using his Pacific figures collection.

I took the part of the Japanese forces defending an island against a US Marine amphibious landing.

The rules have a little learning curve getting used to the multi-purpose cards but the game was fun and I would like to give it another go.

Friekorps und Spartacist

Last weekend I paid a visit to my friend Lenin and we played a number of games. Unfortunately, I stupidly forgot to take photos of some of them but I did remember for this one.

This was the first outing for the Freikorps und Spartacist rules by Stephen Danes using my Empress figures. The game covers skirmishes during and following the German Revolution which saw the right and left political movements taking up arms across parts of Germany.

One of the key elements of the game is the asymmetric deployment which helps to represent the different nature of the two sides (hence the markers you will see in some of the pictures. There are also groups of civilians who can become hostile to the Freikorps if roused.

The two factions consisted of Freikorps and armed police facing off against Spartacists and red sailors. I took command of the Freikorps but was seriously hampered by an unlucky roll during the deployment phase with only my machine gun unit starting on the table whilst the Spartacists managed to deploy their entire force. Fortunately I did get some reinforcements during the game but I never quite recovered (I am contemplating some house ruling here if I play this with more than two players).

The game was a lot of fun and seemed to capture the essence of the period. So I will be investing in more terrain and fielding a few more figures (and possibly an armoured car or A7V next time!)

Normandy 1944 - Big Chain of Command

At our last club meeting I played in a 28mm game of Chain of Command (using the Big Chain of Command supplement) which saw elements of the 1st Polish Armoured Division engaging elements of the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend.

I provided one of the Polish infantry platoons and some of the game accessories; and it was nice to be just playing in a game rather than having to organise it.

We fought hard but struggled to dislodge the SS forces and the game ended ina draw. We could have done with some artillery support but the forces were set by the organiser (but then a bad workman always blames their tools don't they!).

General d'Armee 2

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to be able to play a game of the new Second Edition of General d'Armee umpired by no less than the author himself!

The game was at the Herts Volunteers and was a 28mm outing in the Peninsular War.

As usual I was a commander on the French side of the engagement facing one of the two villages in the centre of the table (in my case made up of two sections one of which was fortified). I did manage to successfully assault and take the unfortified section but couldn't hold on to it and took heavy casualties.

Second edition GdA isn't a radical departure from the original, it's more of evolution rather than revolution with some streamlining of mechanisms. Having played the first edition a couple of times I found the transition pretty straightforward and will be playing these again (using other people's figures as I don't have enough suitable ones of my own!)

Battle of Bannockburn 1314

Last weekend I visited the Herts Volunteers for a refight of the Battle of Bannockburn using the second edition of the Hail Caesar rules.

I took command of the Scottish left wing and despite a string of particularly poor dice rolls managed to hold off the advancing English. Unfortunately our attack in the centre were equally unlucky at key moments and so history was overturned!

Star Wars Armada

At the weekend I ventured down to the club and we played a simple points based game of Star Wars Armada.

As is traditional I played Imperial and had a 400 point fleet based around one Imperial class and two Victory class Star Destroyers with two fighter squadrons each (TIE fighters for the small ships and TIE interceptors for the larger).

My opposition adopted a different strategy having more smaller ships and lots more fighters.

Having not played for a little while I made some fundamental tactical errors with my fighters early on and they took a pasting as a result. Then the capital ships came into range. The Rebels tried to use their greater speed and manoeuvrability to evade my main front batteries but I got enough salvoes into the destroy two of their ships. And whilst one of my Victory class ISDs had taken quite a bit of damage they couldn't bring enough resources to bear to finish it off before the end of the game.

Biggles and the Castle of Terror

I put together a couple of Pulp Alley scenarios for the last club meeting. These saw four players duking it out to investigate a secret Nazi weapons facility in the period before the war.

The four leagues were British, American, Soviet and Italian and were competing to secure or destroy the secret weapons (but had no idea what they actually were!). The table was split into three with the two main areas being outside and inside the facility with the third being the interior locations for the latter (as the buildings I was using did not have removable roofs.

The briefs given to the players were all variants of the following:

You have been contacted by [insert name of intelligence agency*] to undertake a covert mission for them.

Intelligence has been received that the Reichssicherheitshauptamt (RHSA) have had their Sonderkommando H set up an operation at Schloß Wiedergänger in the Bavarian mountains in order to develop new special weapons for the growing Nazi war machine.

Your mission is to infiltrate the castle, determine the nature of the weapons, steal any useful materials and, if possible, disrupt their operations. If you or any of your team are killed or captured the British Government will deny any connection with you.

It is understood that the castle is best approached from the south. Security at the rear gate is said to be light and there are also rumours of a secret passage giving access to the barbican assuming you can find the entrance. A local operative will attempt to answer any questions you may have. They will also guide you to the castle grounds but from there you are on your own!

*Strictly speaking the Italian faction were actually working for the remains of the Cosa Nostra rather than the Fascist regime so their brief was a little different.

Captain Valentina's Italian league were the first to encounter guards from the castle. Fortunately the first was having a quiet drink and Valentina used her feminine wiles to secure his Security Pass. This helped her enormously when she then encountered a patrol. Her men were somewhat less fortunate!

Count Casamir encountered a priest near the ruins of the chapel. After surprising him and getting bashed on the head with his bible the Count placated him and he shared some of the castle's history. Key amongst his information was that information giving the location of the secret passage into the castle was encoded on one of the head stones. The Count and his league started searching the graveyard for the relevant tombstone.

Meanwhile Biggles and his companions had encountered a somewhat distressed woman. Initially they frightened her and she set about them with her rolling pin. Fortunately Ginger arrived and placated the woman, after which she told them her sad tale. Her daughter, Ilsa, had gone missing in the middle of the night and couldn't be found; but she was certain that Ilsa had been taken to the Castle as tales of dark deeds there abounded.

Meanwhile Carson Smith and friends were making heavy weather of moving through the cemetery with some of his team falling into an open grave in the dark (at least one of them more than once!). Having made some much noise they attracted the attention of both Biggles and Count Casamir with the former opening fire on the hapless Americans.

Captain Valentina managed to get into the Castle easily using her stolen pass. She then distracted the guards long enough to allow some of her men to sneak in behind them.

After a skirmish the British, Russian and American teams found the secret passage and made their own way into the Castle.

Scenario 2: Inside the Castle

Once inside the Castle all the leagues moved quickly to investigate the nearest buildings.

The unlucky Yanks opened the door to the nearest building and discovered the Beta test versions of the Tötentruppen who were most eager to meet them (tear them limb from limb and eat their brains too!)

Biggles' team forced their way into the central building and discovered Stahl Mask and his personal Tötentruppen guards (the production versions). After a brief firefight, Biggles threw a smoke grenade in to blind the opposition and then rushed in.

Captain Valentina and her crew investigated the Castle keep. On the first floor her first mate Stefano opened the door to discover Dr Metzger and his latest creation, the Unmensch!

The Russians meanwhile thought they were in for an easy time as their building only seemed to contain human opposition. To their surprise, however, when engaging one of the guards he transformed into an actual Werwolf!

Leaving Stefano to hold the Unmensch on the first floor, Captain Valentina advanced up to the second where she encountered Count Orlok and his companions along with young Ilsa who was about to be sacrificed! On engaging the Count the Captain was shocked when he and his companions suddenly morphed into their true forms - vampires! They flew at the Captain and her crewmates and desperate fight ensued.

In the end, with the Unmensch trapped in their room, Stahl Mask and Count Orlok defeated, it was Biggles who took home the most spoils - back to Blighty for tea and medals!

If you spotted my equivalent post last year you will already know I also play lots of boardgames alongside my miniature wargames but don't post much content at all on those here. I thought I would again share some of the games from my collection that I have played typically with some of my miniature wargaming friends.
